Coriolanus & Clemmie

Is it overkill for Coriolanus to have poisoned her and sabotaged her car? Yes. But is he also prepared for any changes to his plan - ie. she decides she doesn't want tea today? Yes.

The conversation before she returns to the past is one of my favourite parts. Especially Coriolanus' attitude. Clemmie describes it affectionate. Even if he's admitting to poisoning her, to still loving her. Or how it was mercy to choose a fast-acting poison for her.

I like to imagine that during that entire conversation, he doesn't lie. He cares for her, even loves her, yes. But not more than he loves power. If he has to pick one, she will ALWAYS be second choice.

I've previously rambled about the origins of “Va, je ne te hais point” or "Go, I hate you not," being a line that Coriolanus takes from a play. One thing I wanted to add about this line is that it is a litote.

So because it's using the negative to affirm something positive, this means, "I hate you not" is really "I love you".

Reaper & Clemmie

Her original motive is selfish. Yes, she regrets how things had gone with Reaper. But wanting him to live isn't completely altruistic. If he wins this time around then it means Lucy Gray dies. The same girl that Coriolanus chose over her (it was platonic then, but it still stings. That he'd pick LG, and by extension, power + fame, over his best friend.)

One thing I wish I got to write was something for the gap between her and Reaper sharing a clementine and the peacekeepers coming for her.

In that blank, I imagine Clemmie has more time to collect her thoughts about the tributes + the games since she really hasn't had much time to process everything since she's returned to the past.

For her, it's really been: killed via car sabotage -> 18 again + it's the day after the Reaping.

Age brings in a new perspective too. Mentally, she's older than them all. And I don't think she really realized how young a lot of the tributes were. Her first instance might have been to Wovey where she impulsively gives her the one of the waters. Like this is a child.

And just maybe she lets her guard down a bit more around him. They never had a relationship of any sort last time. This time, they may or may not be mentally comparing over how the other is better than Coriolanus. Even if they see each other as 'strange'.

By the time she is led away, there's still that calculative streak in her - this is to spite Coriolanus even if he doesn't know it. Plus getting Lucy Gray to think she's better than him is an even better revenge.

hi! fun fact! where i live, the phrase used is *always* 'per aspera ad astra' so seeing it flipped on the english internets gives me pause every time :D

Latin isn't as strict as English with the order of the words in a phrase usually, since the meaning of a phrase depends on the cases of the words used in it (they indicate words' functions), rather than on the order of the words in a sentence (I believe there may be a few general rules but I've either forgotten about them or my teachers never told my classes about them)

Hence why many seem to have been rearranged in modern times to fit English grammar ("alea iacta est" is now more popular than "iacta alea est", etc.), I believe "per aspera ad astra" is the older version

I'd rather have you in my life as a friend than not at all. As much as I've tried to hide what I've been feeling lately . . . I just, I can't anymore. ❞

Her confession took a huge weight off her shoulders; however, there was also that little bit of fear and anxiety that surrounded her because she knew there was a chance that her friendship with Ethan would end. Their friendship meant so much to her, and it wasn't something she was willing to risk until now. She guessed being tired had a role to play for her sudden revelation. ❝ We've been friends for long enough that I know you don't like to commit but I wanna start thinking about the future. I still want to have fun and live but I also want to settle down some day, and maybe even have kids. I just don't know if that's what you want, too. ❞

what is your favorite word and what does it mean?

oooh this is a tough one lmao.. I've never really been good at choosing favorites of anything really, and, for most questions regarding favorites, the answer will probably change depending on the day.

one of my first thoughts was ephemeral. it means "lasting for a very short time," and, idk, I think that's kind of humanity, in a sense. "lasting for a very short time," but on what scale? a bubble of soap lasts a short time compared to a human life. a human life lasts a short time compared to the age of humanity as a whole. humanity as a whole lasts a very short time compared to the solar system, and so on and so forth. "lasting for a very short time" in some ways describes everything, doesn't it? and yet there's beauty in everything, regardless of what time scale it operates on. I just think it's really special how, despite how often it's emphasized that life is short, or maybe because of it, people continue to pursue joy. our lives are so fleeting, an ephemeral existence, yet there are hand prints preserved in ice and so long ago someone was buried with a ceramic flower crown so that the flowers would never wilt and there are paintings on cave walls and there are footsteps on the moon. and there's a beautiful, beautiful disk out at the far reaches of our solar system containing the sounds of greetings and laughter and music and–

it's a bit of a juxtaposition, I think, how humanity's existence is simultaneously ephemeral yet not by the sheer will to leave a legacy behind.

some other favorite words that come to mind are: daydream, love, juxtaposition, and nakakagigil.

daydream is just a really pretty word to me, and also I daydream a lot, so I like it lol.

I'm someone who loves very strongly and loves in a variety of ways. listen, I may be aromantic, but there's so many kinds of love to experience, and I love my friends and I love people and I love the stars and I love life and I just love so much. and that's what so much comes down to, right? love in some form? so many stories are about some kind of love, and, idk, I just think it's neat.

juxtaposition is just a fun word to say tbh, and also I like it as a concept (it's two things put close together that have a contrasting effect).

nakakagigil is a word from my mother's native language (tagalog), and there's not really a direct english equivalent. but, it's like a word for feeling cuteness aggression lol. idk, sometimes the cuteness aggression levels are just so high that no english word or phrase really encompasses it, and only nakakagigil really describes what I'm feeling.

I never wanted the grief, or the trauma. Never wanted the politics. I’m a soldier, not a diplomat, not a public figure. Not willingly, anyway.

Ultimately, it doesn’t  matter.  Whether I wanted a life like this or not, it’s the life I’ve got.  A soldier is all I know how to be.  That part, I’m OK with. So the answer is no and the answer is yes, both. I’m just... exhausted. ❞

Why are we hating on Ford while defending Mabel?

Reposting from my Reddit version. A quick Ford defence essay.

It's about this meme post (on r/GravityFalls) I've seen defending Mabel lately. It has since been deleted (turns out it's a repost), but the comments still remains. Something mind-boggling to me is that while the comments are in defence of Mabel, some went on hard on Ford instead.

I know the GF fandom as a whole is beyond the Mabel hate already. And I understand all the passion behind defending her and so on. But... Instead the tide has turned to hate Ford instead. To blame him for starting Weirdmageddon. Shoving many accusations on Mabel towards Ford.

Yes, we all know Ford is a flawed character. He has his own hubris and everything, but like, people are demonising him like how haters demonised Mabel. Ok, perhaps at the most to blame is him summoning Bill in the first place. But don't y'all also see the manipulation tactics Bill employed on Ford, especially in The Book of Bill? Sure, Ford was naive, and thought the portal would open the door to the answers he needed. But he was also trusting what he believed to be a friend. How would he know the worst that could really happen?

And then people raised how it was Ford's fault that he told Dipper not to reveal to Mabel about the Rift. In his defence, Ford is also protecting the others, as he said so himself in Journal 3. If more people knows about the rift, the more Bill could target. And hence Ford resolved to shoulder the burden himself, and later Dipper, whom he could trust.

Ofc, does this mean he doesn't trust Mabel? No! It's just that he wasn't sure she could also share this burden. We have to remember that Ford has initial great impressions of Mabel. People forget that Mabel was actually the first twin Ford interacted with, and it was largely positive. When Mabel stated Ford's six-fingered handshake was one finger friendlier than normal, he laughed and said he liked her. Given how much he was shunned by many others for his extra fingers, it probably warmed him to hear someone saying something positive about his anomaly.

Nevertheless, as Ford notices Dipper's abilities in Dungeons, Dungeons and More Dungeons, he began to view Dipper as one who could carry on his baton of paranormal hunting. That said, he has also entrusted Mabel with the unicorn mission in The Last Mabelcorn. Ford certainly favored Dipper a little more, seeing much of himself in his grandnephew, and overlooked the close knitted bond between the twins, but he certainly sees Mabel's strengths and shortcomings. Especially remarking on how sociable she is and so on. It's been elaborated a lot in my other essay on Ford and Mabel.

In the end, Ford at worst made a couple of mistakes, and maybe projected onto a 12 year old a bit too much, but considering what the guy has been through (even before Bill came along, like Filbrick's upbringing of the both of them), his actions were kind of understandable (even if they weren't exactly justified). Ford genuinely thought he was doing the right thing and cared about his family and friend even more than he admitted to himself. He didn't handle it as best as he should've but that doesn't mean he deserves to be hated or overcriticised by the fandom.
