The Japanese Version of Deltarune Chapters 3 & 4

last year i made a post covering aspects of deltarune chapter 2’s japanese localization that i hadn’t seen others talk about. people seemed to like it! and i liked making it as well, so now that chapters 3 and 4 are out, i’ve looked at the japanese text for them to see if i could find anything interesting.

and… yep i did.

since i’m one of the first english fans to look at the new japanese text in this manner, there’s a lot that i skimmed over or just straight up didn’t read, as a decent amount of dialogue is jumbled or shoved under “scr_text”. i mainly focused on the lore-important segments, since there aren’t as many character voices or jokes with interesting translations as there were in chapter 2… with two exceptions.

tenna

tenna is generally pretty well localized. i didn’t translate a lot of his dialogue, but 8-4 has done a pretty outstanding job of making tenna sound like a japanese TV host. for example, the narration to his intro video is translated from this:

It's now time for our feature presentation FEACHER Coming straight from your house Coming straight from YOUR house! He's the One He's GROOVY and NEVER glooby! You can't get this from an EGG! The sensation of your screen The show that makes you scream Say it with him, folks!

to this:

they didn’t need to intentionally misspell the line that replaced “FEACHER” but they did and i love that.

a lot of lines like these were translated to be more in the style of japanese television, and that’s awesome. i really admire the effort, and the shift is palpable even to me, who isn’t fluent in japanese at all.

others have already been curious about how “YOUR TAKING TOO LONG” and its variations are translated— in fact, this youtube video that i found beat me to the punch with covering it. (edit: this one provides a comparison between languages, which is very nice)

jack uses a mixture of hiragana and katakana (no kanji), refers to himself in the third person, misspells things (mostly using ワ for the particle “wa” instead of は), and occasionally uses emoticons. all of these give a strange but fairly childish impression.

and here’s how his iconic phrases were translated:

i looked at raise up your bat’s lyrics to see if there was any extra lore behind them. there wasn’t, but… ralsei’s replacement lyrics are pretty funny in this version. here are the full lyrics

who are pat and britney? are they the secret key to all the mysteries of the story? who knows!

UNUSED

i didn’t find many changes in the text of the chapter 3 and 4 “unused” text (otherwise known as “the voice in the code”), but i noticed that their dialogue sounds a little less feminine/childish compared to in chapter 1. maybe. it does seem like a lot of time has passed. idk

edit: actually, after looking back at all the unused text, it seems like they’ve been always more gender-neutral than i previously assumed.

prophecy

a few changes to the prophecy lines stood out to me.

reference to “depths”. nothing of note besides that

huh????? what the fuck does that mean??

also, the word for “love” used in japanese is 愛, which refers to any kind of love. so no double meaning here, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of an intended double meaning in english, as the japanese translation of undertale has often had to erase intended double meanings that were not translatable, like “determination”.

addendum: As you know,

i’m editing the post to add this in because i forgot that it’s important.

you know the carol line where she says YOU in bright red text and no one knows whether she’s talking to kris or the player? well, luckily, japanese usually omits the word “you” in place of a person’s actual name, so hopefully looking at the japanese version of the line should—

she just uses the word for “you”.

this just makes it more evident that it is meant to be unclear who she’s speaking to.

CONCLUSION

wow that’s it. that’s a lot less than i expected there to be, but again, the game is translated pretty faithfully and there aren’t as many jokes that had to be localized in these two chapters. if you notice anything or want me to translate specific text, don’t be afraid to ask! i’ll be happy to answer any questions and help people out.

Now that I have your attention, I'll explain

I don't know why the localization decided to make Chihiro a toxic lady, but in the original, she acts completely differently.

Yes, she still cringes at the mention of "heavenly love" from Hodō and acts very nervous, but she doesn't drip sarcasm like in the English version. For me, her words were quite cruel and unpleasant.

I think in the localization she meant the most offensive nickname for boys (honestly, I'm shocked that such a thing exists). I won't write it here, I hope you understand me. In the original, she's just disappointed that he deceived her.

She doesn't touch rest of the planet, comparing Hodo to "a dime a dozen".

In the original, Chihiro calls him an "ordinary little brother", hinting at the younger brother figure who you want to pity, plus who also has a cold (+ to care). Yes, Chihiro doesn't see Hodo as a strong person (yet; and she doesn't need to), but at least she doesn't humiliate him. Chihiro even starts addressing him as Naruhodo-kun instead of Naruhodo-san..

She doesn't say "a woman like her", doesn't put a negative spin on the comparison. There's no sense of a lofty "her" and a pathetic "you".

Chihiro asks the question, focusing on the reason for their union (the bottle pendant around his neck), without any hint that they are as different as heaven and earth.

It's no wonder that people have completely different impressions of characters; a few extra words are enough for someone to appear to us in a different light.

I probably ruined Chihiro's image for some people, but that's a fact.

Naritaya's Furry Land

It all started when @questfortori showed me this post:

That sure is a PC-98 game that says "furries ga suki". I had to know what this was all about. Why does a PC-98 eroge have the word "furries", in English? Why did it devote a whole room to the idea of loving furries? I needed answers!

Like it says in the post, it's from the (in)famous Alicesoft eroge Rance 4.1, but searching for it didn't give me much in the way of results. The text in the screenshot is first-person, out of character text so it read like some kind of a dev room, but even searching for that didn't bring up much - until I found the script itself. And there it is, Naritaya's heroic pro-furry screed:

So not only is our friend Naritaya a furry fan, he specifically uses the English word "furries" in romaji more than once while expressing his love for furries. This is a Japanese artist who knows and loves the English furry scene. (Keep in mind, this is 1995!) This is where @moomanibe found copies of some of Naritaya's personal art, with the URL still in the watermark, which is what brought us to:

NARITAYA'S FURRIES LAND

That's right, Naritaya had his own website in the 90s where he posted the anime furries of his dreams, filled with exactly all the kinds of anime art you might remember from the years 1995-2003.

His art style is distinctively 90s/early 00s anime, but there's that heavy use of "furries" in English again. I could only imagine the kinds of connections he must have had with the English-speaking scene, and then I found it tucked among his outgoing links page:

Yes, that's a link to the "Anime Transformation Archive". I lack the subject matter expertise to fully detangle that site's connections to the broader anime/furry scene but it's pretty clear that, yes, there was some western anime-furry fandom connection happening here. Didn't always see much of that back before social media brought us together across languages.

I'm not sure what he's up to now, but wherever you are Naritaya - hope you're still living the anime furries dream.

こっちの世界で思ったこと。

全部もってる人にいくら努力しても結果勝てないなーって思ったらすんごく切なく、寂しくなちゃた。。

実際のことではないし、例えばなんだけど

こっちウケが抜群でめちゃくちゃタイプではないけど

やれなくないウケ抜群の人と頑張って気を使って一緒懸命に努力してるのに無理って言われる人の差が

なんだかなーって思ってしまった。。。

ひとの価値観と生き方だから間違ってるわけじゃないけど平等ではないなと思って努力ってなんだろ？

ってなんか、悲しくなっちゃった😭

ほんとに実際の話でもないしなんなくでしかないから

なんとも言えないけど

なんでも持ってるひとはおさそいもたくさんあるだろうし、はたまたゴチで遊べることも多いけど

たくさん努力して頑張ってももとが万人受けをしなければ拒否られたり、自給自足だっり、出さなきゃいけなかっりでいくら努力しても最初から持ってるひととの差ってうまらないじゃん！って思ったら悲しいなって。

べつに、自給自足だろうがゴチだろが対相手だから

本人たちの意思でのことだからそこらへんの細かいところはよいんだけど良く見てもらおうと一生懸命頑張って努力してる人と持ってるひとはそれだけなのに

なにげない差があるんだなって思ったら悲しい気持ちになりました。

一緒懸命に努力しても全て持って努力してないひととの楽しめる範囲が違うのがなんかなーって。

無意識のなかで差別になってるなって。

なにもしてないのにみんなにうけるひととで

楽しめる回数も楽しい機会があるのも多くなるから

かわいそうだなって。

だからタイプとかあるにしろそこだけでみたいで

日々努力して頑張ってるとことかお話してちゃんと

個個みてあげようとあらためて思ったお話しです。

いい方悪いけどなんでも持ってり人は楽に見えるし、

同じくらい頑張っても断られたりかなり差があるんだなって思ったらやっぱり元から持ってる人は

得することが多いからズルいなって。

努力の差は埋まらないなって。

だからちゃんと中身で見た上の判断

最近、ねこぢるにハマり始めたのね。

そして、その反動でこんなん描いちゃったのね。

ストーリーを説明するとね、Henry死ぬのが怖すぎて1人審査する時間が30分と長くなっちゃったのね。

そんなんだからYog達待つのが暇すぎてね、審査中に持ってた飯(Yogは勿論血、QuachilとIshtarは血管蕎麦大盛り爪散らし)食い始めたのね。(勿論外見チェックした後)

そこでHenryが書類チェック終わってこの有り様を見てブチ切れてね、Yogに「血なんか飲みやがって、ふざけるな!」って、血液バッグを床に投げつけて日々のストレスをぶつけたのね。

そしたらYog、予想通りブチ切れてね、Henryをワンパンで殺しちゃったのね。

それを見たIshtarね、「ねぇ、ドアマンのHenry動かなくなっちゃたよ」って呑気なこと言った上に、Henryの仕事部屋から金(給料)を持ち出したり、ドアロック解除ボタン勝手に押したりしたのね。

ちなみにQuachilね、自分達の部屋に帰るときね、こう言ってたのね。「人殺すって面白いねー」

あと、コレ@joydoesathing の性別反転キャラで描いてみたいんだけど、QuachilとYogが出てないからまだまだ先になりそうなのね。

日にち and 日(ひ/Hi) are the same. 日 is too short and confusing because the pronunciation is the same as “火(ひ/Hi): Fire” or others like 非/比/妃/費/否 etc., we sometimes say it as “日にち” to refer to “day” or “date” directly and clearly.

I guess they mistranslated 「���官と」 into “The doctor, and” in spite that it should have been “with the doctor”, that resulted in the incorrect translation that even Taihou was also thrown out of the rear palace.

In this episode, Shisui’s emotions were particularly carefully depicted. At the beginning, she was about to knock on the door of Maomao’s room, but heard that Maomao was working hard to make medicine, and turned back relieved. To her, Loulan was just a doll to avoid upsetting her mother, and Shisui was her true identity. She would have always wanted to be Shisui, not Loulan if possible, and would not have wanted her real identity as Loulan to be known to Maomao. いがちゃんちで勝手にその辺に落ちていた薬を飲んで眠っていたら「眠剤をお酒で飲んじゃったの？！こわいことするね」と昔言われてから、ずっと怖いことだと思っていた行動がここ1年ほど続いており、私の臓器(特に肝臓)はいちぢるしいIQの低下に見舞われていた　特にずっと性行為は素面でしていないし、正直素面では恥ずかしくてとても出来ないという気持ちにもなってきた
