⌗ NOTE 𓈒 𓈒 𓈒 hi!!!! what's going on with you ☺️?? okay the xiaojun fic is about finished and this week im practically going to be GONE (regents week + my winter formal this friday) so this is like my last update before i crawl into my hole and suffer.. um i hope this somehow makes someones monday better and i'll see you this weekend hopefully with xiaojun 👍

"WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOU DOING?"

it is currently nine pm, the shift today tired you, but not enough for you to drop everything and immediately head to bed, though you wanted to do that, your body wouldn't exactly just let you. you had the sudden urge to draw an architectural sketch of a house, it was like when you drank an espresso shot and then had the sudden urge to bake cookies afterward (you hope that's normal for most people— you hope). you understand why renjun walks in and is instantly concerned.

"this is how i de-stress" you reply, continuing your sketch, but all renjun does is narrow his eyes, trying his best to judge your behavior nicely.

"you look more stressed than anything" renjun clicks his tongue, taking another sip of his tea. "have you tried to sleep at all today?"

"i can't sleep!" you exclaim, throwing your hands up in the air. you end up startling renjun, who jumps back at the volume of your yell. "sleep is practically impossible at this might, i'm just trying to distract myself" you say, giving him your run of the mill fake smile.

renjun blinks, then sighs, knowing there's nothing he could say to convince you to stop working. so, he rubs his temples and shakes his head. "alright then, i made us dinner, come eat".

"i'm not hungry—"

"y/n, come eat or i'm going to force feed you".

the threat, though presumably a false one considering renjun never actually puts his hands on people, somehow scares you enough that you drop your pen, rolling your sketch up and finally taking your hands off it since you began it a good two hours ago.

"have your parents still been urging you to visit them?" renjun asks, though his words are muffled because there's a spoonful of fried rice in his mouth. he covers his mouth and clears his throat, still awaiting your answer.

"yes, but they always get mad when i inform them i can't just not attend my classes to visit them" you lean your head on your hand, moving your spoon around in your meal, not really having an appetite.

"don't play with your food" renjun scolds like a mom, giving you that familiar but rare cold glare, the type he always gives to donghyuck or jaemin when they do something fairly idiotic. "eat".

"okay okay" you frown, and renjun just smiles, feeling victorious. "don't kill me".

renjun smiles a totally non–threatening smile and just hums. "i'll consider it".

"DID YOU KNOW WE SELL OUIJA BOARDS HERE?"

you look up from your phone and at jaemin, who stands before you holding, low and behold, a ouija board. a small chuckle escaped your lips as you stare at the display, and you can hear jisung's gasp from behind you. "ooh! we do?"

"we should try it".

mark's statement is met with immediate rebuttal from the rest of your coworkers, which is a huge surprise to you, because knowing them, you assumed that they would've been elated at the opportunity to summon something from a ouija board at work.

"are you crazy? yoon would kill is if we somehow summoned a demon in the store" chenle crosses his arms as he deadpans at the eldest of the group, you laugh at the way he isn't inherently against the idea of using the board, he just doesn't want to get in trouble for summoning a demon using the board.

"we should sacrifice jaemin to the board demons" donghyuck comments absentmindedly, the empty tone of his voice causes for mark to burst out laughing, pretty much dying right there at the counter. "like those virgin sacrifices that happen in movies".

"jaemin's a virgin?" jeno asks, as if that was the most concerning thing about donghyuck's words. the words make you snort, and jaemin's jaw just drops as he stares at all of you.

chenle turns the other way and crosses his arms, trying to not make his giggling obvious, jeno glances at all of you, still waiting for an answer to his question. donghyuck isn't laughing though, just looks at jeno and scrunches his nose.

"that wasn't— how is that all you got out of the conversation!?"

"i heard jaemin and virgin sacrifice in the same sentence so i put two and two together!"

and you might be asking— why aren't you guys doing your jobs? well sunday's are never busy, and even if you do get customers, they usually just do things on their own and only come to you to check out, ask for something minor, or just pay for their stuff and go.

so really, sunday's are just free days for you, all the eight of you do is stick around, probably do some missing schoolwork, and gossip (okay that's mostly donghyuck and chenle, but everyone participates in it once in a while), and while you know that's probably not what you should be doing when you can be restocking shelves or cleaning messes on the floor, but whenever you guys have a chance, you like to be lazy.

"speak of demons.." chenle mutters, pointing towards the door, where your manger can be seen on his way in.

donghyuck quickly hides his phone, and jaemin totally not suspiciously throws the ouija board on the ground, out of sight. "good morning" jeno politely greets, but the older man is anything but polite.

"it's almost twelve thirty".

"good afternoon then!" though his correction comes off as sweet, there's no hiding the obvious distaste in his voice, and jeno has to restrain himself from rolling his eyes because he doesn't want to be written up for "disrespect".

"how was yesterday?"

you laugh awkwardly, twirling your finger between your finger. now you could so easily eat jisung out and let him face the punishment he should face for the idiotic stunt he pulled the day prior, so you bite your inner cheek and do not say the words that laid on your tongue.

"fine, fine" you say, and it comes out so casually that it really seems like that's it. you can pretty much feel jisung's inner sigh of relief as you say those words.

"really?" he raises an eyebrow, totally suspicious, and you nod again, so so awkwardly that renjun has to touch your arm as a way to tell you to 'stop nodding'.

"i heard something about.. a fire?"

you awkwardly laugh out loud again, and you feel donghyuck pinch you, hard, as a way to say "cut it out and act natural".

"oh that was.." you pause, trying to figure out what exactly to say. "that was a false alarm! i left food on the microwave for too long and wasn't paying attention, so the fire alarm went off!"

you are so impressed with yourself, because you came up with that lie so fast it was like that scenario actually happened, if you weren't so anxious right now, you'd look like a natural, but you are currently very anxious, but you manage to keep standing.

well— that's mostly because jeno is rubbing your back, coaxing you just enough that you don't feel like you'll breakdown anytime soon.

"okay then.." he narrows his eyes weirdly at the eight of you, but you all just pretend that nothing is wrong. "make sure to.. you know, do your jobs?"

"yep!"

"we got you boss!"

the moment he leaves the room, you finally let out the breath you'd been keeping in for a good few minutes. your stomach curls uncomfortably, and you feel as if there's bile sitting in your throat.

you have no idea why you felt so bad, it's not like you haven't lied to your boss before, but this one time just makes you feel horrible, sick even.

"i'm gonna throw up".

you don't even try to talk to your fellow coworkers, just brush past them and make your way to the bathroom, having no time for any more small talk.

your day was just going amazing!

This week’s initial tentative super rough/literal translations under the cut.

"Hello! Can you please elaborate on the time loop theory in book 2 that you mentioned in the tweet where you talked about your favourite theories?"

I am wary about discussing this theory as there are many others who have put much more thought into it than I have, but I can certainly try with what I was able to find :>

The basic theory is that everything we know is repeating in a loop in an attempt to either stop something from happening or to make something happen.

The game’s tagline of “I will show you a true happy ending” (EN: “Let us show you the real happily-ever-after”) could be insinuating that there have already been less than happy endings, and we may have already seen one: while some theorize that the events of the prologue are showing us what is going to happen in the future, others say that it is both that and something that has already happened.

The theory goes that the battle with the chimera (who may or may not be an overblotted Grim) was lost and everyone (or just the prefect) is sent back to try again, thus the opening lines of the game narrated in Crowley’s voice.

(Note: I would have translated this as “I—they—you—only have a little time left. Whatever you do, don’t let go”, but the situation is so vague that anything is possible.)

(Here is a short comic insinuating that this time loop is Crowley’s unique magic (warning: blood, death, a Yuu design))

This theory seems to be largely inspired by Mickey’s comment that he has seen the same dream three times but he also says “your voice gets clearer and clearer every time.”

Since Mickey also shows up in Books 2 and 3 but we were not able to speak with him, it is possible that this is not actually hinting at two earlier loops, just earlier events within the same timeline. This does not dismiss the time loop theory and might mean that this is Mickey’s first time interacting with the loop, but there have been far more than just two or three timelines.

(This account pretends that Book 7 does not exist yet, so that is about as specific as I can get.)

The theory gets kind of wild with references to STYX’s simulation system, supposed inconsistencies with Ace and Epel, Crowley’s potential connection to STYX, etc, but one thing that everyone seems to agree on is: Leona knows.

Leona is extremely powerful and extremely private.

He has had a number of contracts with Azul who is also a powerful mage, and according to Idia he seems like “the kind of guy who always knows he’s dreaming.”

Yana has confirmed that Idia has a part in Book 7 and, with both him and Leona halfway out of their coffins in promotional art, people are wondering if Leona will be stepping up as well.

We know that Riddle’s current personality is a 180 degree change from original plans and that this change was made pretty far into development, after everything had already been approved.

There are also rumors that Leona’s Book 2 was the original Book 6, looking at older promotional information (Book 2 was originally listed between Ignihyde and Diasomnia on the official website).

It is possible that—much like Riddle’s situation—Yana came up with a better idea than what had originally been decided, and it required shoehorning Leona’s drama into an earlier Book in order to make it work.

This would mean that Book 7 used to have significant space for Leona (there is a pattern of the previous Overblotter having a role in the next Book).

That space may have been rewritten for Idia, but it is also possible that Idia’s role was added separately and a role for Leona remains to some extent, which is why they went out of their way to say that Leona knows when he is in a dream.

Theories vary from “Leona is 100% aware of what is going on, broke free from the loop and he is the only one getting older as he tries to save the world” to “Leona knows something isn’t right but not exactly what.”

The proof that people usually point to is his comment where he is unsurprised by Grim “always” eating black stones (which he shouldn’t know anything about), but the phrasing is so vague that he could just be making the connection between the stones and a potential blot-risk.

Another scene that is often referenced in the “Leona knows” conversation is an interaction with Jamil where he accurately predicts Jamil’s attack on Kalim despite how rarely they interact before Book 6.

There are also the three white chess pieces on the chessboard in Leona’s bedroom that seem to correspond to the only three characters in the game with light cosmic magic: a white rook for Rook, a white knight for Silver and a white pawn for Kalim, whom Leona literally refers to as a pawn piece in chess during Tamashima-Mina (these three chess pieces are also displayed prominently in Leona's first Birthday groovy).

Leona also seems suspicious of Crowley, suspects what really happened in Book 5 and is able to literally sniff out magic, which we have seen no other character capable of doing.

Leona is very perceptive in general: he is suspicious of Lilia in Spectral Soiree, calls him an old man when no other character outside of Diasomnia knows his true age, is the first to figure out that Malleus is pretending to be possessed and is able to tell when someone becomes injured and is trying to hide it in both Book 6 and an event.

This is not proof that Leona knows what is happening, but it may be an argument for why it is likely that he knows more than he is willing to let on.

Some versions of the time loop theory say that the same prefect is being sent back over and over again to try and save everyone (which ties into the game’s opening), while other versions say that this is the prefect’s first time being summoned into a loop that has been going on for a long time without them, in an effort by someone (Crowley?) to change the ending of the story.

While not technically part of the game, the Twst novelization supports the first pattern while the manga series supports the second, with new prefects showing up after the previous prefect presumably fails.

Knowing Yana it is possible that the game is actually a third, entirely different pattern with the novel and manga exploring alternatives that were considered for the game but not used.

The term “hanfu” (traditional Chinese: 漢服, simplified Chinese: 汉服) literally means “Han clothing”, and refers to the traditional clothing of the Han Chinese people. “Han” (漢/汉) here refers to the Han Chinese ethnic group (not the Han dynasty), and “fu” (服) means “clothing”. As I explained in this post, the modern meaning of “hanfu” is defined by the hanfu revival movement and community. As such, there is a lot of gatekeeping by the community around what is or isn’t hanfu (based on historical circumstances, cultural influences, tailoring & construction, etc). This isn’t a bad thing - in fact, I think gatekeeping to a certain extent is helpful and necessary when it comes to reviving and defining historical/traditional clothing. However, this also led to the need for a similarly short, catchy term that would include all Chinese clothing that didn’t fit the modern definition of hanfu -- enter huafu.

The term “huafu” (traditional Chinese: 華服, simplified Chinese: 华服) as it is used today has a broader definition than hanfu. “Hua” (華/华) refers to the Chinese people (中华民族/zhonghua minzu), and again “fu” (服) means “clothing”. It is an umbrella term for all clothing that is related to Chinese history and/or culture. Thus all hanfu is huafu, but not all huafu is hanfu. Below are examples of Chinese clothing that are generally not considered hanfu by the hanfu community for various reasons, but are considered huafu:

1. Most fashions that originated during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), especially late Qing, including the Qing aoqun & aoku for women, and the Qing changshan and magua for men. I wrote about whether Qing dynasty clothing can be considered hanfu here. Tangzhuang, which is an updated form of the Qing magua popularized in 2001, can also fit into this category. Below - garments in the style of Han women’s clothing during the Qing dynasty (清汉女装) from 秦綿衣莊 (1, 2).

2. Fashions that originated during the Republican era/minguo (1912-1949), including the minguo aoqun & aoku and qipao/cheongsam for women, and the minguo changshan for men (the male equivalent of the women’s qipao). 3. Qungua/裙褂 and xiuhefu/秀禾服, two types of Chinese wedding garments for brides that are commonly worn today. Qungua originated in the 18th century during the Qing dynasty, and xiuhefu is a modern recreation of Qing wedding dress popularized in 2001 (x). Below - left: qungua (x), right: xiuhefu (x).

4. Modified hanfu (改良汉服/gailiang hanfu) and hanyuansu/汉元素 (hanfu-inspired fashion), which do not fit in the orthodox view of hanfu. Hanfu mixed with sartorial elements of other cultures also fit into this category (e.g. hanfu lolita). From the very start of the hanfu movement, there’s been debate between hanfu “traditionalists” and “reformists”, with most members being somewhere in the middle, and this discussion continues today. 5. Performance costumes, such as Chinese opera costumes (戏服/xifu) and Chinese dance costumes. These costumes may or may not be considered hanfu depending on the specific style. Dance costumes, in particular, may have non-traditional alterations to make the garment easier to dance in. Dunhuang-style feitian (apsara) costumes, which I wrote about here, can also fit into this category. Below - left: Chinese opera costume (x), right: Chinese dance costume (x).

6. Period drama costumes and fantasy costumes in popular media (live-action & animation, games, etc.), commonly referred to as guzhuang/古装 (lit. “ancient costumes”). Chinese period drama costumes are of course based on hanfu, and may be considered hanfu if they are historically accurate enough. However, as I wrote about here, a lot of the time there are stylistic inaccuracies (some accidental, some intentional) that have become popularized and standardized over time (though this does seem to be improving in recent years). This is especially prevalent in the wuxia and xianxia genres. Similarly, animated shows & games often have characters dressed in “fantasy hanfu” that are essentially hanfu with stylistic modifications. 7. Any clothing in general that purposefully utilizes Chinese style elements (embroidery, fabrics, patterns, motifs, etc). Chinese fashion brand Heaven Gaia is a well-known example of this. Below - Chinese-inspired designs by Heaven Gaia (x).

8. Technically, the clothing of China’s ethnic minorities also fit under the broad definition of huafu, but it’s rarely ever used in this way.

From personal observation, the term “huafu” is mainly used in the following situations:

1. Some large-scale events to promote Chinese clothing, such as the annual “华服日/Huafu Day”, will use “huafu” in their name for inclusivity.

2. For the same reason as above, Chinese clothing including hanfu will often be referred to as “huafu” on network television programs (ex: variety shows).

3. A few Chinese clothing shops on Taobao use “huafu” in their shop name. Two examples:

明镜华服/Mingjing Huafu - sells hanfu & hanyuansu.

花神妙华服/Huashenmiao Huafu - sells Qing dynasty-style clothing.

With the exception of the above, “huafu” is still very rarely used, especially compared to “hanfu”. It has such a broad definition that it’s just not needed in situations for which a more precise term already exists. However, I do think it’s useful as a short catch-all term for Chinese clothing that isn’t limited to the currently accepted definition of hanfu.
