Do you think Hanfu should have a standard style? I mean, we can wear everything but there is this style which representes Hanfu, I think 齐胸襦裙 could be the best style to represent the standard because it cheap, good quality in general and comfortable! What do you think? Or it is better 袄裙?
Hi! Thanks for the question, and sorry for taking ages to reply! (image via)
Tumblr media
No, I personally don't think hanfu should have an all-encompassing standard style. Rather than somehow mandating a standard style for everyone, I think it's better to let individual groups, organizations, and institutions set their own standard style if they wish.
Furthermore, as I explained in my post on how I feel about the inconsistency of the hanfu revival movement, even if there was a standard style, it would be very difficult to enforce.
If I had to choose a standard style, I'd probably go with the 交领襦裙/jiaoling (cross-collar) ruqun (image via):
Tumblr media
I'd choose jiaoling ruqun because it's:
the most representative style of hanfu imo
commonly depicted in media (well-known)
relatively comfortable & easy to wear
unisex
As for the two options you suggested - 齐胸襦裙/qixiong (chest-high) ruqun & 袄裙/aoqun - while qixiong ruqun is iconic as the representative women's hanfu style of the Tang dynasty, it's not as convenient to wear compared to the other two styles (image via):
Tumblr media
Compared to qixiong ruqun, aoqun is probably the better choice when considering convenience & comfort. It's also the representative women's hanfu style of the Ming dynasty, and thus more recent compared to other styles (image via):
Tumblr media
With that said, I stick by my opinion that a representative standard style is not necessary for the hanfu revival.
Hope this helps!

what’s a 襦 in hanfu, someone told me it’s a part of hanfu but I can’t find what it is exactly?
Hi. It had taken awhile and I did try… but my classical Chinese is rather terrible.
Long story short, 襦/rú originally means tops that are between waist and knee long. There were many types of ru, and could be lined or unlined. Usually it was worn underneath 袍/páo (robe, reaching the feet). Much, much later 长襦/cháng rú could also mean pao. Before that chang ru meant those that reached a person’s knee. The used of ru as an everyday word slowly fallen out of use in Tang Dynasty. By Song dynasty, short tops were usually referred as 衫/shān (unlined) or 袄/Ǎo (lined).
In the beginning of hanfu movement, 襦 as used as its original dictionary meaning – a short top that is not longer than knee. Hence, we had 齐腰襦裙/qíyāo rú qún and 齐胸襦裙/Qíxiōng rú qún. Later people decided collectively to be more specific and respected the change of meaning in words in history, and so ru is now (2022) specifically referred to those top with a separate waist attachment. Whether ru actually must have a separate waist piece is still debatable.
Tumblr media
This couple are usually the more well-known example of ru.
There is another type of ru with half-round collar - those were probably replaced by the circular-collar in Tang dynasty.

Shen Yue dengan qixiong ruqun Song Yi dengan qixiong ruqun Yu Shuxin (Esther Yu) dengan qixiong ruqun Penggambaran media Qixiong ruqun telah digambarkan dalam film dan serial televisi, termasuk Curse of the Golden Flower (2006), Jumong (2006), Queen Seondeok (2009), The Empress of China (2014), Wu Xin: The Monster Killer (2015), The Longest Day in Chang’an (2019), The Untamed (2019), Court Lady (2021), The Long Ballad (2021), dan masih banyak lagi. Zhao Lusi dengan qixiong ruqun dalam drama The Long Ballad (2021) Li Yitong dengan qixiong ruqun dalam drama Court Lady (2021) Ai Ru dengan qixiong ruqun dalam drama The Longest Day in Chang’an (2019) Artikel pertama muncul di: Tionghoa Indonesia - Budaya dan Tradisi Tionghoa Indonesia Pada: Pakaian Tradisional Tiongkok, Hanfu Wanita: Qixiong Ruqun / Qixiong Shanqun

A Chinese Idiom Inspired Hanfu Set, consisting of:

Cross-collar shirts
Pleated qun 百迭裙
-To be worn waist-level as a yichang 衣裳
-To be worn chest-level as a qiyao ruqun 齐胸襦裙
Link to full collection
Design thoughts below the cut:
This set takes inspiration from the idiom of 鲤鱼跳龙门,which translates as “carps jumping through the dragon’s gate." It references the Chinese myth of carps swimming up a waterfall in order to transform into dragons, and when used as an idiom, it describes making a big advancement in one’s life. I've always found this tale to be inspiring. The myth's use of literal transformation to describe a transition has always stuck with me, especially considering how dragons are considered to be masculine. As such, I've sort of adopted this idiom as a metaphor for my own transition. It’s the namesake of this whole collection (龙门 LONGMEN meaning "dragon's gate") so I thought it’d be only natural to design a set based off the idiom as well!
In contrast to the dragon and phoenix set I presented earlier, this set isn’t two different hanfu sets paired together. Rather they are the same pieces of hanfu just styled and worn in a different way. Albeit with the addition of a doupeng cloak for the dragon! I felt that this would serve as a poetic representation that when someone transitions, they as a person are remaining the same person they've been, just with a presentation that fits them better as they grow :)

top 5 hanfu outfits hanyi 💓 - xiaosean
*SCREAMING* I jumped straight into Taobao to grab pictures for this ask I AM SO EXCITED TO REPLY IT
disclaimer: oncoming picture spam which I just couldn’t bear to hide beneath a cut
not really a specific look, but more in terms of my top 5 (listed “chronologically”) favourite hanfu styles
1. 圆领袍 (yuan2 ling3 pao2)
Literally means “round-collared robe”
Tumblr media
Originally for men
Tumblr media
But became popular among women in the Tang dynasty
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some people also wear the collar unbuttoned so it ends up looking like this double lapel thing which is still damned cool

2. 飞鱼服 (fei1 yu2 fu2)
Literally means “flying fish clothing”
Type of clothing given from the emperor to eunuchs/ guards (e.g. the Embroidered Uniform Guard) during the Ming dynasty
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
帅气 x100000 although I’ll never be able to pull this cool look off
Sources:
如梦霓裳 [1] [2] [3]
3. 道袍 (dao4 pao2), bonus if it’s paired with a 披风 (pi1 feng1)
Literally means “Taoist robe” but was not restricted to only Taoists
Common full-length single robe that was worn by men in the Ming dynasty
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometimes with a ma mian qun (will talk about this later) underneath it!
Tumblr media
LOOK AT THAT PI FENG AHHH 仙 x100000
Tumblr media
4. 马面裙 (ma3 mian4 qun2)
I LOVE THESE OMG
Literally means “horse face skirt”
Common pleated skirt worn in the Ming dynasty
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can be traditionally worn as part of the 袄裙 (ao3 qun2), which consists of the skirt and a top worn over the skirt
Tumblr media
But I reaaaally love the ma mian qun because it’s so damn versatile and can be paired with modern classy looks like this
(I’m getting this top and skirt on 11.11 hoho)
Tumblr media
An even more modern look like this (I have this particular skirt hoho)
Tumblr media
AND EVEN MODERN BADASS LIKE THIS (also getting this skirt during 11.11 hoho)

5. 交领襦裙 (jiao1 ling3 ru2 qun2), bonus if it’s paired with a 大袖衫 (da4 xiu4 shan1) or 褙子 (bei4 zi3)
Okay I’m a bit hazy on when this started becoming popular/ commonly worn so I’ve put it right at the end instead of fitting it “chronologically” like the rest above
Some styles are from the Wei-Jin period, some are from the Song dynasty, and a lot of styles on Taobao these days don’t really stick to particular period of what a jiao ling ru qun looks like
Literally means “cross-collared short coat and skirt”, as opposed to the 齐胸襦裙 (qi2 xiong1 ru2 qun2) which is something like what jiang yanli in donghua wears
I prefer the cross-collared styles more hehe
Tho speaking of cross-collared styles, my major pet peeve is when people accidentally draw the collars crossed the wrong way (right over left instead of left over right)... because that’s usually meant for the deceased

Jiang Yanli (Shijie) Cosplay Worklog Part 1- Costume Overview
After some quick online research I found that Shijie’s dress is most likely a type of Hanfu (汉服) called Qixiong Ruqun(齐胸襦裙) . It consists of a skirt  (qun裙) and  a blouse (ru襦) . She also wears a coat called Daxiushan大袖衫.
Disclaimer : My knowledge on Hanfu is still very limited and this not the proper way of sewing a historically accurate one. I treated it as a cosplay project and tried to keep the whole process as simple as possible.

Some comments:
- Ruqun was the most popular style, with waist-high ruqun and chest-high ruqun taking the #1 and #2 spots, respectively.
- Ming dynasty styles had a strong showing, with four spots in the top 10: Aoqun (#3), Upright-collar Ao (#6), Upright-collar Shan (#7), and Pifeng (#10).
- Quju, which used to be one of the most popular hanfu styles (if not the most popular style) during the early days of the hanfu revival movement, has now fallen to #15 (0.18%).
My favorite style of hanfu is waist-high ruqun, which got #1 on the list. Did your favorite hanfu style/item make it into the top 10? ^^

Qixiong ruqun (Hanzi: 齐胸襦裙 ; Pinyin: qí xiōng rú qún) – Ruqun dada Artikel pertama muncul di: Tionghoa Indonesia - Budaya dan Tradisi Tionghoa Indonesia Pada: Pakaian Tradisional Tiongkok, Hanfu Wanita: Ru Qun 襦裙
