Bro, this is so tragic. The fear that really be growing up with you but it's all true ㅠㅠ Poor mom.

Honestly, why did this happen to him? As a child, why was he the one to sense the water spirit?

I don't love how we ended things. I'd rather keep everything supernatural rather than bringing in the whole society itself was the prison in the end. I feel like that girl finally deciding to push him away made no sense. She was so dramatic about it even though we've been so nice this whole time.

Cuenta la leyenda que una joven de apenas 23 años, en la mejor etapa de su vida, fue brutalmente torturada cerca de un río. Los malhechores, no contentos con eso, la acabaron matando en el fondo del mismo. Las autoridades locales, al encontrar su cuerpo sin vida decidieron darle los honores habituales en un velatorio. Pero la joven no quería eso, quería justicia. Y no la tuvo.

Ella con anterioridad había avisado de que alguien la acosaba, pero nadie hizo nada por ayudarla. Era tarde. Los días siguientes al crimen, as personan que iban a lavar su ropa al río del pequeño pueblo se sorprendían al encontrar cada día piedras apiladas. Pensaban que las habían colocado los familiares de la fallecida para rendile honor y purificar su alma. Sin embargo, nadie de la familia de la joven lo había hecho. Según fueron pasando los días, varios animales aparecieron ahogados.

Llamaba especialmente la atención la expresión en su rostro, que reflejaba auténtico terror. El rumor se fue corriendo entre los vecinos, que empezaron a asustarse. Los animales que todavía estaban vivos empezaron a comportarse de forma extraña, no querían acercarse al agua, preferían morir de sed. La histeria y desesperación se fueron extendiendo por el pueblo y la gente no entendía qué pasaba. Los animales seguían falleciendo y pronto lo relacionaron con las piedras que aparecieron a la orilla del río. Decidieron que lo mejor sería derribarlas. Para ellos un par de torres serían suficiente tributo a una persona, el resto podrían destruirlas. Pero cometieron un grave error porque ese fue el principio del fin.

Una noche un grupo de tres aldeanos ebrios se acercaron a la orilla del río. Pero de repente, algo los asustó tanto que dos de ellos salieron corriendo, aterrorizados. El tercero no supo reaccionar y se quedó petrificado. Por la mañana al ver que no aparecía, los aldeanos fueron a buscarlo y lo único que encontraron fue el cuerpo del hombre ahogado. También había muchas más torres de piedra. Era imposible que una sola persona pudiese levantarlas en tan solo una noche.

Una de esas torres estaba construida sobre el torso del fallecido. Con las semanas fueron sucediendo más asesinatos, la mayoría de hombres. Por ese motivo tenían prohibido acercarse al río. Pero lo que no sabían era que aquella cosa que los estaba destrozando, no solo podía ir al río, sino también a cualquier lugar con agua.

El fantasma empezó a aterrorizar a los vecinos en diferentes lugares: en los baños, las jarras, en cubos... solían encontrar cabellos largos y negros en todas partes, y el reflejo del agua les recordaba el monstruoso rostro de aquella niña torturada. También los olores en el pueblo cambiaron, olía constantemente a muerte, a miedo.

Ellos habían ignorado las plegarias de aquella joven y ahora estaban pagando por ello. Y nunca parecía ser suficiente, su sed de venganza fue acabando poco a poco con todo el pueblo. Incluso se propuso acabar con la descendencia de todos los aldeanos. Los torturaba apareciendo constantemente y eso los sumía en la locura. Para después ahogarlos y que le hicieran compalía en el fondo del aquél río que años atrás había sido testigo de todo.

Se dice que en el fondo están las almas de todos los que humillaron a la joven. Más tarde, intentando encontrarle una explicación a esta leyenda, algunos hablaron de histeria colectiva o incluso de un yacimiento de mercurio. Esto podría explicar la locura y posterior muerte al estar envenenados por esta sustancia. En cualquier caso, naa de eso se sabe a ciencia cierta. Lo que sí se conoce es que en muchos pueblos y lugares se levantan muros para honrar a los difuntos. Quién sabe si alguno incluso fue colocado por un fantasma... Por si acaso, en Corea en ciertas ocasiones del año, se les rinde culto y se les realizan ofrendas. Creen que de esa forma se sentirán menos solos y necesitarán menos compañía fresca. También se intenta mantenerlos tranquilos a través de diferentes rituales chamanistas. A través de esto se pretende ayudar al espíritu a cumplir su objetivo y poder descansar en paz. Mejor prevenir que curar.

soonyi  fell  into  despair  as  she  had  no  friends  or  people  to  turn  to  when  life  got  tough.  the  only  thing  keeping  her  alive  was  her  dog,  who  died  later  in  the  year.  soonyi  couldn’t  take  it  anymore;  everything  in  her  life  was  falling  apart  little  by  little,  and  the  only  thing  left  to  do  was  disappear.  soon  after  walking  to  the  han  river,  soonyi  stepped  onto  the  railing  and  watched  the  city.  the  day  was  windy  but  sunny,  making  it  the  perfect  day  to  kill  herself.  all  of  the  memories  of  her  life  flashed  in  her  eyes,  reminding  her  of  the  shitty  family  she  had.  the  only  good  thing  there,  was  her  dog,  who  she  couldn’t  see  anymore. 

tears  welled  up  in  her  eyes  as  she  kept  thinking  about  everything,  the  wind  blowing  in  her  hair  as  the  sun  shone  on  her  pale  skin.  she  indeed  was  a  masterpiece,  as  if  someone  painted  an  angel  they  once  saw.  taking  a  step  forward  from  the  bridge,  her  foot  barely  hanging  onto  its  concrete,  she  leapt  off  the  bridge  and  into  the  water,  letting  the  liquid  flow  into  her  mouth  and  fill  her  lungs.  choking  on  water,  she  tried  to  rise  to  the  surface  though  it  felt  as  if  something  was  pulling  her  down,  deeper  into  the  dark  abyss.  the  bubbles  escaped  her  throat  as  if  they  were  waiting  for  the  moment  she  would  scream,  the  water  muffling  any  sounds  she  made.  tears  flew  from  her  eyes,  and  got  lost  in  the  salty  water.  this  was  precisely  what  she  imagined  drowning  was  like.  the  crushing  feeling  that  haunted  her  the  entire  time  she  was  breathing  was  gone.  soonyi  closed  her  eyes  and  followed  the  dream  she  was  in,  turning  different  ways  to  look  for  the  exit.  but  there  was  nothing,  only  darkness.  

soonyi  felt  lighter  like  the  leaves  wind  carried  when  separated  from  the  branches  upon  opening  her  eyes.  looking  down  to  her  legs,  she  saw  nothing  but  the  ends  of  her  dress,  the  same  dress  she  wore  when  she  jumped;  her  hands  travelled  to  her  waist  and  grabbed  the  dress's  fabric,  lifting  it  a  little  to  check  her  legs.  after  she  noticed  her  hands  looked  a  bit  transparent,  soonyi  realised  that  she  was  a  ghost  [  mul  gwisin  물귀신  ].  next  to  her  sat  her  beloved  friend,  a  transparent  hairy  ball  of  wet  fluff  that  was  barking  at  her,  telling  her  that  it  missed  her  and  that  they  should  go  and  play  fetch  now.  soonyi  felt  something  damp  roll  down  her  cheek,  falling  onto  the  ground  next  to  her  dog’s  toy.  picking  up  the  toy  ball,  she  threw  it  far  away  onto  the  park  grounds,  her  dog  running  after  it,  leaving  wet  puddles  every  time  its  feet  touched  the  ground.  this  was  the  happiest  soonyi  has  ever  been,  hoping  and  praying  that  this  would  never  end.

구미호(Kumiho, Nine-tailed Fox)

A monster or mystical animal handed down to East Asia. 구미호 is famous for being able to transform into a fascinating woman, meaning a nine-tailed fox with a mystical power. Korea's 구미호 is characterized by its desire to become a human being.

The goblin is neither human nor God. It plays pleasant pranks on people with their superpowers. It sometimes makes fair bets on people. It is described as having both gaiety, absurdity and extraordinaryness. It is also called 귓것, 허주, 뜬것, 독각��, 독각대왕, 망량, and 망량신. An original explains that It seems a mysterious and big man, a flame, or a fairy. It is hard to limit the appearance of a goblin. The goblin is characterized by a dislike for murder and blood.

 물귀신(Mul-gwi-sin, a water demon)

A ghost in the water, attract and drown a person who entered the water. The water ghost is mostly a woman's figure of a woman. Water ghosts cannot accept the fact that they have drowned and have a grudge, so they lure people to the place where they have fallen and drown. There are many views for doing this. first, it is because of wanting to make friends. second, it is because one must kill someone else to get out of there. lastly, it tries to strengthen one's power by subjugating the soul by omitting and killing people.

처녀귀신(Cheo-nyeo-gwi-sin)

The ghost of a woman who couldn't get married. It is called 말명, 손말명, 손각시, etc. It looks wearing loose black hair and white clothes. There is a case with blood on it. 

몽달귀신(Mong-dal-gwi-sin)

The ghost of a man who couldn't get married. It is also called 삼태귀신, 도령귀신, etc. The spirit of a bachelor who suffers from lovesickness or died without marriage at the age of marriage becomes a distant spirit and commits evil deeds to a person.

달걀귀신(Dal-gyal-gwi-sin)

Korean Ghouls

In the spirit of Halloween heres some different Korean ghouls, ghosts and spooks!

귀신 - Ghost/Spirt

귀신 dead people who are trapped on earth because of some kind of revenge, or unfinished business on earth.

처녀귀신 - Virgin Ghost - women with long black hair covering their face

물귀신 - Water Ghost - drags you into water so you share the same fate

달걀귀신 - Egg Ghost - face is like an egg, smooth and featureless

도깨비 - Goblin

도깨비 are nature deities or spirits possessing extraordinary powers, strength and abilities to interact with humans. They often play pranks on humans or punish them but there are different types from mischievous to dumb, so it can depend on the story sometimes. Also popularly depicted as the main character in the kdrama Goblin (쓸쓸하고 찬란하神 – 도깨비).

구미호 - Nine-Tailed Fox

구미호 is seen in korean, japanese and chinese mythology. A fox that lives a thousand years turns into a 구미호 giving it power to freely transform typically into a beautiful woman to seduce men and eat their liver or heart. 구미호 is very popular depicted in various media in, most popularily Naruto, the kdrama My Girlfriend Is a Nine-Tailed Fox, and the League of Legends character Ahri.

저승사자 - Korean Grim Reaper

저승사자 is always depicted in human form wearing a black hanbok and traditional Korean black hat. The job of a 저승사자 is to guide newly deceased souls to the afterlife not to kill or judge the deceased. They often appear before someones time of death and lingering outside places where lots of death has occurred.

Les 귀신 sont les fantômes des gens qui sont morts. Souvent trouvés dans les bâtiments abandonnés, les cimetières, les forêts ou les écoles, ils errent sur terre jusqu’à ce qu’ils aient accompli ce qu’ils n’ont pas pu faire avant de mourir. La 처녀귀신 porte souvent un 한복 blanc (vêtement traditionnel coréen). Elle porte ses longs cheveux noirs lâchés. Morte avant d’accomplir son rôle de femme, qui consiste à servir son père, son mari et ses enfants selon la tradition confucianiste, elle est condamnée à parcourir le royaume humain pour toujours. C’est un fantôme souvent amer et en colère. L’un des seuls moyens de s’en débarrasser est de lui présenter le fantôme d’un homme célibataire, mort avant d’avoir pu se marier, pour les unir et leur permettre de se rendre dans l’au-delà.

물귀신 (fantôme d’eau)

Ce sont les fantômes des gens qui sont morts noyés ou se sont suicidés dans un cours d’eau. Rarement entièrement vus, leur tête émerge à peine de la surface et les légendes racontent qu’ils attrapent vos chevilles pour vous attirer dans les profondeurs avec eux. On les trouve dans les océans, les lacs ou les baignoires. S’ils sont aperçus en dehors de l’eau, leurs vêtements toujours humides gouttent sur le sol....

달걀귀신 (fantôme œuf)

Ces fantômes sont les plus terrifiants du folklore coréen. Leur nom vient du fait que le visage est lisse comme un oeuf: il n’a ni yeux, ni nez, ni bouche. Parfois, il n’a ni jambes, ni bras. Les voir suffit à vous tuer. Le 달걀귀신 est une anomalie parmi tous les fantômes coréens qui ont tendance à conserver une apparence humaine ou à avoir une raison derrière leur colère et leur violence. Évitez de randonner seuls dans les montagnes coréennes au cœur de la nuit noire.... 

저승사자 (la faucheuse)

Ce grand homme, vêtu d’une longue robe noire et d’un chapeau traditionnel (le “갓”) est l’équivalent de notre faucheur. Son visage pâle et ces yeux cernés apparaissent à ceux qui sont près de la mort ou dans des rêves de mauvaises augure. Loyaux envers leur patron, le dieux des Enfers, ces messagers de la mort ne peuvent être corrompus et poursuivent leur cible jusqu’à ce que leur mission soit accomplie.

황석영이 말하는 이문열

내가 이문열을 처음 만난 것은 1982년 대구에서 였다. 당시에 고은 시인이 광주항쟁 이후 이른바 '김대중 내란음모사건'의 연루자로서 대구교도소에서 복역중이었다. 사건은 별게 아니었지만 일반면회가 금지되어 있던 당시에 동료를 격려한다는 차원에서 문인들과 언론인, 교수 등이 어울려 대구에 몰려갔다.

마침 대구에는 영남대학교를 비롯해 계명대 경북대 등지에서 교수직을 하는 지인들과 문인들도 많아서 형식적인 재판이 끝난 뒤에 술집에 모여보니 삼십 명이 넘었다. 나도 광주에서 송기숙과 함께 갔었고 마침 석방되어 있던 김지하와 이시영 조태일 박태순 이문구 염무웅 김종철 등등 여럿이 있었다. 이튿날까지 술자리가 계속되었는데 오후 뒤늦게 이문열이 대구의 기자들과 함께 찾아왔다.

나는 그가 민음사에서 '사람의 아들'을 냈다는 것은 들어 알고 있었지만 그 이상의 활발한 창작을 하고 있는 줄은 몰랐다. 나는 지금도 그렇지만 문단에서 일어나는 일이나 다른 작가들의 작품에 대해서 무심하게 지나쳐버리는 버릇이 있었다.

술자리가 질펀해지고 있었는데 이문열 청년이 술이 올라서 김지하와 더불어 이야기를 했다. 이문열은 '삼국사기의 역사적 관점이 글렀다고 그러는데 문장은 고문 중에서 가장 좋다'라고 말했다. 무슨 얘기인지 들으면 대충 뜻을 알 만한 말이었다. 거기에 덧붙여 서예 얘기를 나누다가 이문열이 '이완용은 매국노였지만 당대의 명필이었다는 점은 인정해야 한다'고 했다.

듣다 못하여 나도 취한 김에 '야 이 사람아 그러면 일본군 총 맞아 죽은 동학농민군 돌쇠가 죽으면서 이완용은 명필이다 외치고 죽겠냐' 그랬던 기억이 난다. 김지하가 '니가 서예에 대하여 뭘 아냐'고 하자 나는 홧김에 '니가 배웠다는 미학이 경성제대 창설 이래 가장 쓰잘데기없는 학문이라는 건 안다'고 대꾸했고 술자리는 파장이 되었다.

나는 이문열에게 '이제 시작하는 모양인데 모든 건 자기 선택의 문제' 라고 말했다. 나는 애초에 논쟁적인 사람이 아니다. 공격받고 오해되는 일이 있어도 그냥 흘려버리고 잊는다. 이문열이 80년대 이래로 치열한 상황이 벌어질 때마다 체제의 편에 서서 여러 가지 주장을 하는 것에 대하여 그러려니 하고 넘어가곤 했다. 솔직히 게을러서 그의 작품들은 거의 읽을 인연도 없었다.

내가 방북하고 베를린 거쳐서 뉴욕에 체류하고 있을 무렵이었다. 아마도 1992년이었다. 어느날 이문열이 뉴욕에 왔다면서 내게 전화를 했다. 나는 외롭던 시절이고 문인이 해외에서 나를 찾은 것도 오랜만이라 반가웠다. 그래서 부근에 사는 동창에게 천 불을 꿔가지고 맨해튼으로 나갔다. 아무리 망명자 신세라지만 내가 선배이니 마땅히 술은 내가 한잔 사야겠다는 허세였다.

술이 몇 잔 돌아간 뒤에 이문열이 언제 귀국할 거냐고 물어 왔고 나는 그냥 때를 보고 있는 중이라고 대답했다. 이문열은 동구권의 붕괴와 함께 북한체제의 불합리성에 대해 격렬하게 얘기를 꺼냈다. 나는 무덤덤하게 듣고 있다가 나도 이형과 같은 생각이라고 대꾸했다. 북한은 사회주의의 본질에서 멀어졌고 실상 군사파시즘의 모습을 띄는 독재체제라고.

이문열이 물었다. 그럼 왜 방북했냐고. 나는 언제나처럼 '민주화와 통일은 한몸이다. 우리 사회의 민주화가 성숙되는 것이 북한을 변화시킬 수 있는 힘이 되며 그것이 평화적 통일의 길이다' 라고 대답했다.

우리가 피차 술이 좀 취하고 나서 이문열이 문득 월북한 아버지 얘기를 꺼냈다. 나에게 북한을 통해서 좀 알아봐 줄 수 있겠냐고 부탁했다. 나는 생각한 바가 있어서 언제 뉴욕에 다시 오느냐고 물었더니 일주일 뒤에 온다고 했다. 그럼 그때 연락하라고 일어둔 뒤 뉴욕 UN으로 파견된 북한대표부에 전화를 걸어 이문열 부친의 월북 시기와 인적사항을 적어서 팩스를 넣었다.

좀 기다려보라더니 사흘 뒤에 답변하는 팩스와 전화가 차례로 왔다. 팩스에는 이문열 부친의 간단한 이력과 가족관계가 적혀 있었고 생존해 있는 현주소도 나와 있었다. 일주일 후에 이문열이 뉴욕에 왔을 때 그 팩스를 보여 주었다.

나는 지금도 기억한다.

이문열의 부친 이원철은 북한에 가서 전공을 농업경제사가 아닌 수리공학으로 바꿨다. 그는 남로당에 대한 숙청에서 살아남을 수 있었을 정도로 대단히 유능한 지식인이었다. 원산의 어느 공업대학에 직을 얻었고 재혼하여 오 남매를 두었다. 종이에는 이문열의 배 다른 아우들 이름과 직업과 나이가 길게 나열되어 있었다. 그것을 들여다보고 있던 이문열은 고개를 돌리더니 갑자기 무너지듯이 허리를 굽히고는 흐느끼기 시작했다. 나는 그 처절한 모습을 차마 보지 못하여 고개를 돌리고 눈시울을 닦았다.

한참 뒤에 격정의 파도가 가라앉고 이문열은 술 한 잔을 넘기고는 웃음을 지으며 말했다.

'영감쟁이, 우리 어머니는 진작 당신이 재혼�� 줄 알고 있습디다'

나는 베이징 북한대사관에 오면 아버지와 통화를 할 수 있을 것이다, 그러나 이것은 북한의 낚시일 수도 있다. 라고 말해주었다. 이문열은 힐난조로 '황선생, 그러다가 어떻게 귀국하려고 그럽니까. 왜 월북 권유를 하고 다니쇼?'라고 말했다. 나는 그런 일도 없고 그럴 사람도 아니라고 대답할 뿐이었다. 그러고는 이 모든 분단의 억압에서 놓여나고 싶었다. 문학에 대한 노심초사도 벗어버리고 익명의 망명자로 살아가고픈 생각도 들었다. 그때까지 나는 미국의 망명 권유를 마다하고 무국적자로 체류하고 있었다. 그 이후부터 이문열의 모든 상처와 그늘은 내 것처럼 받아들여졌다.

누가 의도적으로 이문열을 어떻게 생각하느냐 내게 물으면 나는 대답했다. '그는 전쟁 때 폭격으로 불바다가 된 거리에서 손을 놓친 아우 같다' 라고. 아, 그리고 나는 뉴욕에서 이문열과 헤어지기 전에 말했다.

이제는 당신 아버지를 용서하라고.

그때 아버지는 당신의 아들뻘이었고 훨씬 미숙했던 젊은이었다고.

내가 한국에 와서 구속되었을 때 이문열은 나의 석방 촉구 성명서에 서명해 주었을 뿐만 아니라 집회에 나와 연설하는 일에도 흔쾌히 나서 주었다. 이문열이 그러한 종류의 일에 동참한 것은 그 이전에도 그 이후에도 없었다. 이문열은 면회 올 때마다 자신의 책들을 한 아름씩 들여주고 갔었다. 그래서 나는 그제서야 이문열의 작품들을 읽었다.

내가 석방된 뒤에 이문열은 논객이 되어 좌충우돌 논쟁을 벌이고 홍위병 사건으로 그의 책들이 화형대에 오르기도 했다. 나는 분노하여 반문화적 처사라고 입장을 밝혔지만 그래도 이문열에게 전화를 걸어 정치 칼럼은 그만 쓰고 소설만 쓰자고 했다.

언제부턴가 언론에서는 진보 보수를 갈라서 선정적으로 이문열과 나를 나란히 올려서 상징화했다. 나는 그것이 불편했고 이문열과 정치적인 맞수로 취급당하는 게 싫었다. 나는 이문열이 그놈의 물귀신 같은 '이념의 덫'에서 놓여나 자유롭게 휴머니즘의 대 벽화를 완성하기를 바랐다. 우리는 나름대로 한 시대 독자들의 사랑을 받았고 우리가 누린 모든 영욕도 그들이 준 것이 아니었던가.

나는 이문열의 관념 과잉인 듯한 계열의 작품들보다는 그의 자전적 요소가 엿보이는 '하구'같은 성장소설에 끌린다. 솔직하고 풋풋하며 잔잔한 감동을 일으키기 때문이다. 그 소설의 '인생파'다운 수수함이 여운을 길게 남긴다. 언제나 그러기를 바랄 수는 없지만 가끔씩은 이렇게 순정하고 비틀리지 않은 사람 사는 이야기가 담긴 소설을 ���고 싶다.

이문열은 원래 그런 사람일 것이다.
