Learn Korean with Korean Children’s Shows

Many children’s media is easily accessible too, with a lot of shows officially uploaded to YouTube for free so you don’t have to hunt down resources or pay for a specific subscription or platform. They are great for beginner practice because of the easy-to-follow plots, simple dialogue, and story!

Hello Jadoo – 안녕자두야 The plot focuses on a young girl in Seoul and her antics with friends and family.

The Youtube channel Learn Korean with Jadoo is a good resource, with both Korean and English subtitles (with subtitle options for more languages too!) in short 10min episodes.

Pororo the Little Penguin – 뽀롱뽀롱 뽀로로 The most popular recent Korean children’s TV show, Pororo has hour-long episodes uploaded to YouTube for free as well; but the official channel doesn’t come with English or Korean subs so keep that in mind.

Dooly the Little Dinosaur – 아기공룡 둘리 A late 80s to 90s Korean kids’ TV show, Dooly is also an official South Korean citizen

Anpanman – 안판만 Popular children’s show about a bread superhero, it’s Japanese but still big in Korea (and dubbed in Korean), also referenced in the iconic BTS song

Pinkfong 핑크퐁 No doubt you probably know “Baby Shark”, which craze was started by the Pinkfong channel originally in Korean and then into English. They have a bunch of Korean songs and short stories on their channel.

JunyTony 주니토니 Channel about animated twin wizards with animal friends, who go on magical and musical adventures, using their spells to save the day.

yearimTV 예림TV This YouTube channel has many short stories and songs like the others, but also has a focus on traditional Korean stories.

Love In The Big City Part 3: Words and Miscellaneous Context

Spoiler-free continuation of this post, aiming to provide some help for anyone who might not be familiar with Korea and the Korean language. As before, feel free to point out anything that I might have missed and I'll add it to the list!

Chuseok [추석]: a mid-autumn harvest festival and 3-day holiday in Korea, it is one of the biggest holidays in Korea where many travel home to celebrate with their families.

Seol [설] or Seollal [설날]: the Korean New Year, following the lunisolar calendar, another one of the biggest Korean holidays.

Pororo [뽀로로]: a Korean children's series featuring the main character Pororo, a penguin with glasses and a helmet

Crong [크롱]: a crocodile character from the Pororo series

Jeju Accent: the accent spoken on Jeju island, which others generally find difficult to understand and which has a lot of it's own vocabulary that differs from mainland Korean.

Incheon [인천]: a city about one hour's commute from Seoul. Includes Incheon Airport, which you're most likely to fly to if you ever fly to Korea and Soul.

Ah ssi [씨]: a shortened (and very common) version of ssibal [씨발], meaning "shit" or "fuck"

Talking cutsey - aegyo [애교]: talking cutely or using baby-talk, a common way to try to charm someone into giving you something or do something for you. Usually used by someone younger towards someone older, and periodically a trendy form of idol fanservice

And now, a mystery: gaejjolahn. Gyu-ho uses this expression, "Ah ssi, gaejjolahn" when Young surprises him with a back hug. While we've already covered that Ah ssi is a swear word, both @profiterole-reads and I are stumped as to a proper translation.

The first part, gae [개] means dog, which is very commonly combined with other words to create swearwords (for example: bullshit [개소리] and bastard [개새끼] ). 개~ can also be used in a positive way, for example to express that something is really good by combining dog [개] + good [좋아] into fucking good/amazing [개좋아].

The second part of the word, ~jjolahn, well... we have no idea. Presumably, it's a Jeju-specific exclamation of some kind, but that's guesswork. If anyone knows what it means, do tell me!

"바다탐험대 옥토넛"

주변에 미취학 아동이 없는 관계로 거의 모르는 장난감의 세계. 일요일 밀롱가 갔다가 사석에서 지인 부부 아들이 갖고 놀던 거. '바다탐험대 옥토넛'이라고, 뽀로로 다음 단계 장난감이라고 들었다. 공룡은 초등학교 들어간 이후일까?

나무위키 찾아보니 미오미(Meomi)라는 디자이너 두 명이 만들었다는데, 옥토포드란 해저 기지에서 바다 생물 도와주는 얘기라고 한다. 캐릭터는 총 8종이고, 번개 장터에 떨이로 17,000원에 올라온 게 있던데 약간 땡기네.

한글로 옥토넛이라고 해서 땅콩인가 했으나 철자 확인하니 "Octonauts". 아마도 octopus + astronaut 합성어인 거 같다. 캐릭터 중 '잉클링 교수'란 문어가 옥토넛 탐험대 창설자라고 나옴.

내가 찍은 사진에서 문어 표시가 있는 하늘색 모자 큰 거 쓴 캐릭터는 '바나클'이란 북극곰이라고 한다. (어딜 봐서 곰이란 건지) 애꾸눈 캐릭터는 '콰지'라는 고양이. 그래서 바다 속으로 출동할 땐 잠수복을 입나 봄.

한국 포함 전 세계에서 애니매이션이 방영 중인가 본데 궁금해서 유튜브 찾아 봄. 그리고 돈의 위력을 잘 알 만큼 나이 먹은 아재로서 그림책, 장난감 등등으로 벌어들이는 재화가 얼마일지 상상하지 않을 수가 없네.
