As far as your invitation, my thoughts have been on fall trying it's best to arrive, and what that would look like in the various friend groups i've pushed myself into.

Fall pushes into San Francisco, and all anyone really cares about is the snacks, and the fact that Halloween is just around the corner. I can say Sitara and I are most definitely going to be going from store to store to gather up all the fall themed snacks and apple cider we can get our hands on.

Fall arrives on Yara, and not much changes. This is the tropics, after all. However, Libertad is definitely celebrating the changing season, and Dani and I are definitely going to wind up driving all over the island to find decorations for the various groups to make their bases a little more festive.

Fall in Hawkins sees both my s/is playing babysitter to the party. Whether or not it's Steve and Rebecca fighting to wrangle the kids to go do something together as a group, or it's Dustin roping his sister into the party's spooky season pranks. On either side, I can see a hayride in our future. The whole nine yards, hayride, pumpkin picking, hot apple cider and donuts.

Fall in Hope County sees one of the few times that the resistance and the project call a truce. Any kids in the county are more than welcome to come for treats at the veteran's center and the compound. There will more than likely be a giant Halloween party thrown, which i'd end up helping Mary May prep for, because she knows I wouldn't mind helping. And if the Hope County Sheriff's Deputies are helping organize the pranks they're supposed to be trying to stop, that's somebody else's problem. ( Probably Sheriff Whitehorse. )

Fall is Astoria's favorite season. Once Astoria and I wind up in Mystic Falls, we have a little more of a chance to interact with the changing seasons, and there's a bunch of going out for coffee and enjoying the leaves changing around town, and there's definitely a lot of late nights watching all our favorite movies with a bunch of junk food.

🍺 Jamie, we need the full unabridged Calico Jack essay you certainly have.

Ok so here's the thing. I've already made a lot of the meta about him that I need to make so I'll just link some and give you director's commentary. This is in reverse chronological order of when I posted it so my understanding of my evil alcoholic meow meow has grown more complex and nuanced the farther down it goes.

The full throttle Jack apologia I was on before the canyon materialized - I understand why this one has 7 notes and three of them are from me. I really do. However I stand by most of what I said here. I don't stand by my relative minimization of what Jack did do wrong (Being homophobic, being a bad friend to Ed and saying that they're not friends, Being manipulative instead of just warning Ed and letting him make the call about Stede). I think that what's missing from this little essay is that Jack is, as a narrative tool, trying to pull Ed back into his old life that he hates. His fundamental narrative purpose is to show what Ed's life was like back when he was shitty. Now I think from this perspective that Stede is just as culpable for doing that to Mary but it's not Mary's story any more than it's Jack's story so I am reading against text in this meta. However what you have to understand is that in may of 2022 when I published this thing that Jack was universally hated. I personally saw him as a sympathetic and wrong character where as the general consensus back then was that the dalliances he talked about with Ed had to have been non consensual if they were real because why would Ed ever have sex with a guy like that. Which is a take I have a lot of problems with but the main one is that it denies Ed agency to have sex with a guy that rubs you, the viewer the wrong way. So basically, I agree with this post but I would not make it in the current relatively Jack friendly climate of the fandom. Nor would I make it in a post canyon enviornment where the homophobic masc white guy apologia has reached a fever pitch just because I don't want to be associated with that. Also I'm a lot less charitable to Stede than most ofmd fans for personal, non jack related reasons. Also I want to make a note here that I should have made in that meta but will make now that I'm not saying that Stede is terrible and you shouldn't like him, my argument was essentially that seeing Jack as one dimentionally evil is kind of weird when you're willing to completely write off Stede's misogyny era as an oopsy. I like Stede. Most people like Stede. I stood alone in also liking Jack at the time.

Here's a much more reasonable strain of Jack apologia that I've settled on - In the early days I bounced back and forth between "he literally did nothing wrong except kill Karl" and "He's the worst guy ever (affectionate)" but eventually I saw how the wind was blowing on people who said "he's never done anything wrong" about Izzy and I was like, I'll dial it back even though I'm not throwing Ed or Stede (generally unless I'm also defending Mary B in the same breath) under the bus to say it. You'll notice it's pretty much the same thesis except for instead of being phrased as "Stede was out of pocket and Jack did nothing wrong and you're all highschool brained" it's phrased as "I think this is what happened but these two other things could also be the case and I would still like him. This is the clear role he plays in the narrative giving it to someone else annoys me." Also Beardy is what I started having my Jack tulpa call Ed before season 2. I've explained why Here on the @ask-calico-jack sideblog where I'm the mod because I got an ask about it and I decided to address it out of character. Also I'm Not Going Anywhere is a Jack apologia fic I was writing at the time which I have since abandoned. Basically I whumped him into submission.

My Evidence for Jack being willing to risk his life to save Ed - more apologia that I stand by. Once again I want to reiterate that in 2022 everybody hated that guy and most people still hate him which is fair and natural but enough people have come around that I'm now willing to ignore the haters because I have to fight with the people who like him wrong.

I learned that Calico Jack was named after calico the fabric and I made this because I'm still on my Jack/Ed enemies to rivals who fuck shit - Not sure about Ed's skin here, is he too orange? depends on whether you're on desktop or mobile.

Brief asside that I feel like I have to put in and here's probably best: At some point in late 2022 early 2023 Jack stopped being so villified and people started to think he was kinda fun. After this the CJizzys attacked. I used to passively like the concept of CJizzy because in my head they were the worlds worst guys being terrible together. It was giving Izzy a pirate captain to obsess over the way he obsesses over blackbeard, except the pirate captain actually liked being a pirate captain so it was healthier than what he has going on with Ed, and also it was like if that one straight couple that are together but hate each other because she's a nag and he's a slob were gay pirates who partake in unsafe bdsm. Then a bunch of people started writing and drawing this wildly out of character CJizzy stuff and I got turned off of it completely because they would hollow out my favoriate little villain to turn him into the perfect white masc boyfriend for their little guy because they cant enjoy a show if there aren't masc4mascs in it, and now because of that I hate the ship. I just can't stand people giving Jack emotional intelligence without him being wrapped in a blanket and socialized by force first. It's not that I don't like woobifying him it's that you're woobifying him wrong and above is the way you ought to do it. anyway, onwards.

Anon asks me how I think Jack felt about being rejected by the crew - I stumble upon an interesting potential motive for him faumenting mutiny against Stede and potentially evidence for him telling the truth about having been mutinied three times.

Ed has a type - I added Frenchie in here because I'm a serial shipper and I stand by that decision despite Frenchie being different from Jack and Stede in most ways but I genuinely think that Stede and Jack are a very similar type of guy

Jack is not a frat boy - this one is me being a dick again but also I'm right.

Jack calls Stede slurs, this is funny - note that Stede also calls Jack "calico" as if his first name is Calico and his last name is Jack and that historically Jack was called "calico" Jack because some guy writing a salacious book about pirates wanted to make him seem gay so to me Jack's nickname for Stede is Fairy and Stede's nickname for Jack is Fudgepacker. This to me is both amusing and homoerotic.

Sunday 14th May

Today was mainly a sorting out day. We have our friends Simon & Trish arriving today for a week. They have hired an apartment nearby. Also we have a big day tomorrow as Alain & Marie José are joining us too for the opening procession of the Festival of the Sea in the Gulf of Morbihan.

So we want to be ship shape.

We went to the supermarket. We took our washing with us as there was a laverie in the carpark. We put a large load on and went to do the shopping. All done 35 minutes later, but the tumble drier didn’t work. Carol took the shopping back to the boat whilst I walked into Arzon with the wet washing to a laverie there, according to Mr Google. Unfortunately it was a dry cleaners, shut on Sundays. There is another laverie on the marina, so I went back to the boat, had a lovely crab lunch with Carol and set out on the 10 minutes walk round to the laverie. The tumble drier wasn’t huge and the drying program took 45 minutes. Luckily there was a bar close by so I had a beer in the sunshine while I waited. 🍺😎

Meanwhile Carol cleaned and prepared food for tomorrow.

In the afternoon we saw a yacht being towed (badly) up the fairway by presumably a berthing master. The yacht had no propulsion. I went to help out, but the berthing master couldn’t manoeuvre his boat close enough to pass me a line. He made a right fist of it and eventually towed the yacht back out of the fairway. A few minutes later, they were back at speed and as they approached the berth the yacht was cast adrift and it was up to the helmsman to guide it into the berth. Unfortunately the speed wasn’t fast enough and he only just reached the end of the finger.

I grabbed the pulpit (the bar/railing on the front of the boat) but the stern drifted round in the wind. The berthing master attempted (badly) to push the stern back round. Carol came to help. Eventually we got the boat moored.

A bit of excitement!

In the early evening, Simon & Trish arrived after their long drive from Roscoff. We had a couple of drinks and went off to a restaurant. We had a good meal and a lovely catch up.

It’s going to be dull, cold and windy tomorrow. Let’s hope the forecast is wrong.

Pyscho, Carrie, and Last Man On Earth for Minerva :D

Horror movies and talking about my s/is. Two of my favorite things!

Psycho (1960): Excluding your f/o, does your s/i get along well with anyone else in canon? Is there anyone they don’t like? Is there someone that doesn’t like them? Minerva gets along amazingly with Hurk and Sharky, as well as Mary May Fairgrave. I suppose i could also put the three fangs for hire here as well, Boomer the good boy, Peaches the mountain lion, and Cheeseburger the bear. The next step down in friendship level would be anyone she works with : Whitehorse, Pratt, Hudson.  As far as not getting along with, that's also a relatively simple one. Joseph, for more than the obvious reasons. Minerva thinks he is the most annoying man to ever walk the face of the planet, on top of the whole doomsday cult thing. Maybe a shocking one that she doesn't like is Adelaide. The woman is a bit much, even for Minerva. The feeling is mutual, but Addie tolerates the deputy for getting her helicopter back.

Carrie (1976): What’s that one thing that your s/i is always associated with? Even if some people aren’t very familiar with them, what’s that one thing your s/i is known for? A cry of hope across the resistance has become three words. "It's the Deputy!"  Minerva is known mostly for her actions. Her enemies know her by the way she can systemically clear a base to reclaim it for the resistance, and her allies know her as the avenging angel who swoops in to save the day when she sees someone in need. Those closest to Minerva would tell you the most recognizable things about the woman is her custom SPAS12 shotgun, decorated in flames, her affinity for hitting peggies with a shovel she painted a smiley face on, the animal usually following her around, and her tendency to take the charm from peggie vehicles she crashes as a trophy, of sorts. 

The Last Man on Earth (1964): In a scenario where your s/i never meant your f/o, what would they be doing now? Would much change about them? A scenario where John and Minerva never met is more than likely a world where Eden's Gate did not settle in Hope County. She'd be just another Hope County Sheriff's Deputy, drinking with her friends on the weekend and trying to stop Sharky from burning the whole damn county down. Not much would change about Minerva however, she'd still be the same girl blaring classic rock way too loud as she drives around Hope County in her beat up old mid-70s Silverado, considering that without a holy war to fight, she'd probably have the spare time to get it running again.

Minerva Black, hometown girl. Hometown girl turned rookie Deputy just before her life went to hell. As Minerva was in the helicopter to Joseph Seed's compound, she watched the video that had been published, exposing this cult. They had to be stopped, but Minerva had a feeling it wouldn't be that easy.

MEET MINERVA! - born and raised in Hope County, she was brought up on Hope County values. Know how to hunt, fish, camp, things of that nature. - immediately adopts all the fangs for hire. they're all her pets now - prefers riding around in a peggie pickup truck, and takes souvenirs. every peggie vehicle with a charm she defeats, she takes the charm and paints it a different color. - all she wants to do is help.

MINERVA + JOHN - these two met on less than stellar terms, considering that they were enemies initially - john being john, he's very much a gift giver, and gives her things to show his affection. - even if in the beginning that it sending his convoys straight into an ambush for an excuse to talk to her. - in my timeline, john eventually realizes that he's being used by joseph and switches sides, fighting for the resistance. he plays both sides until the others find out - they're partners in more ways than one. there's a point where they do everything together.
