Jack had been locked in the lodgehouse for a week. He hadn't so much as left his bed since the fire. Jack had been curled around his blanket-the one that had come from the theater-and had been silent.

Davey had been in and out of the lodgehouse, trying to step up and lead with Race, but he didn't know these boys. He didn't know what they need or how they act or what stories to tell at bedtime.

He hated that he couldn't just do this for Jack. Why couldn't he just be the leader that the newsies needed?

Davey looked around at the chaos, then at Race, brows furrowed and eyes pleading for help.

Mush, who was sitting at the table between them, piped up. "I can take over fo' a while!"

"Mush, I can't ask you-"

"You ain't askin', Dave!" Mush smiled broadly. "And I ain't either."

He looked up the stairs, then back at Davey. "Me an' Blink an' Specs got this. You an' Racer go take a break. 'M sure you both missin' your fellas."

Race, unlike Davey, didn't hesitate. "I'll see ya later. C'mon Al."

He dragged the redhead by the hand, out the door, undoubtedly heading for Brooklyn to complete their trio.

Davey, however, couldn't bring himself to go up the stairs. "He doesn't want to see me-to see anyone- right now..."

"Davey, if you don't go up them stairs right now, I gonna soak ya."

Davey looked over at Mush, who raised his brows at them, and nodded as he finally made that first step.

Once the first one was conquered, the rest were easy, and he was practically running to the top. He stopped at the door to the bunk room, knocking softly. "Jackie?"

He pressed an ear to the door, listening for his boyfriend's response.

When there isn't one, he knocks again. "Jackie, I'm comin' in, okay?"

He waited a moment longer, waited to see if Jack would say no, say anything. When he doesn't, Davey pushes open the door, eyes falling on the bunk in the middle of the room.

Jack didn't move, didn't even look up at Davey, just stared unseeing at the floor.

"Oh, Jackie..." Davey's heart broke at the sight, moving closer to him. He knelt in front of him, trying to get Jack to look at him, tilting his chin up, but his eyes remained glazed over.

He leaned forward, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "Hey, sweetheart, I'm right here. I'm right here, just for you. It's just you and me in here. You don't... you don't have to pretend with me."

Jack's eyes finally registered that he wasn't alone, but he didn't do more than look at Davey.

"Hi, Jackie," Davey smiled as their eyes locked. "Look at you, darlin'..."

Jack shifted slightly, curling tighter around the blanket.

"I know..." Davey murmured, brushing his fingers through Jack's hair. "I'm right here."

Jack let out a grumble, and Davey took that as a small victory. He watched as Jack slowly shifted around, arms wrapping around Davey's torso, burying his face against his chest.

Davey stayed stock still, not wanting to frighten the boy away when he was finally allowing someone to be with him.

"I've got you, Jackie. I'm right here for you," Davey murmured, kissing his head.

Jack's shoulders shook, and it took Davey a moment to realize he was crying, sobbing silently against him.

It was Davey's turn to wrap his arms around his partner, holding him tightly, carding his fingers through his hair.

" 'm- 'm sorry-" Jack choked out through his sobs.

"Shhh... Jackie, it's okay, let it all out..." Davey whispered to him, pulling him closer. "Let it all out. It's just us."

Jack let out another sob, and Davey could feel his chest tighten at the sound.

"I know... I know, Jackie. It'll all be okay."

Jack learns about Hanukkah and ask questions

David's mom and Sarah all make the Newsies quilts each with something resembling the newsie its given too

All the newsies try to find something for them, they all pitch in to get Sarah and Ester a new dress, Myer a new razor, and Les a stuffed dog

Jack and David stay up all night talking while the windows open, either in the lodge or at David's house

On thanksgiving the whole Jacobs family makes a meal for all them AND the Newsies

David sometimes has to stay at home while his parents take Les to see their grandparents so he invites Jack over while Sarah goes spend time with Katherine

If his parents are out more than 1 day Sarah and him each get a day for the house all to themselves with their partners

He looks at said notebook when he misses Jack (mostly at night when he can't sleep)

He fails a lot but at least he can dip Davey and kiss him

He also tries to teach Jack how to read better

Well he dose to most of the Newsies but like Albert and Elmer they need extra time to learn

Jack has many issues so dose Davey so they both help each other

And they have new ways to help each other all the time

-sarah laying out on a towel, trying to get some sun

-davey helping les build a sand castle (with a moat and a drawbridge and everything)

-kath finding a patch of shade and settling down to read

-medda packed snacks for all her kids and made sure everybody had sunscreen on

-crutchie playing pirates with blink and mush (crutchie is peg-leg pete while blink is one-eyed earl and mush is captain fluffbeard)

-splasher having the time of his life playing in the tidal pools

-maybe oscar and morris are even there too. morris doesn’t love the feeling of the sand so he just brings his coloring books and sits on one of those nice flat rocks instead while oscar watches him and makes sure he doesn’t fall off
