Fun Barovian Nonsense!
I'm playing Remi, a batfolk/hexblood shadow monk Barovian orphan. He grew up not knowing where his shadow powers came from. He's certainly not part of any order or way like a traditional monk. He's just someone who learned how to defend himself and fight to survive and somewhere along the way found the shadows.
His perception and understanding of his hex and shadow magic is that he asks the shadows for aid and they answer:
He saw a monster or a hunter in the woods and he wanted desperately to hide, he wanted to be hidden with all of his being, and so the shadows welcomed him, silenced his steps, darkened his hiding spot, and he cast Pass Without Trace.
He wanted to pass on the roads without drawing attention, and as a caravan grew closer he wanted so badly to not cause a scene, to be looked over without question, and the shadows wrapped around him and he cast Disguise Self.
Because every ability he has is flavored with shadows, one thing I did for funsies early on was say that when he cast Pass Without Trace he stole shadows. In my head, it was one way to avoid being caught. No one can see the shadows flicker as you move if you have none. So Pull Shadows has been my phrase to signify Pass Without Trace.
Flash to Curse of Strahd. We are drawing the attention of Things. We have our fated ally with us. Strahd is aware of us. Ireena is trusting us to protect her with Ismark dead and buried.
We're afraid of being watched by something, we don't know what.
I pull shadows from everyone, just to protect us.
One shadow remains.
If a shadow could grin, it would have. It just watches us, stretches into its true form, no longer confined to one of ours. And then it goes.
Now every time a shadow is stolen, we hold our breath. We wait and see. Is something following us now? Are we actually alone?
We go to the Amber Temple. We spend days in the library with a restored Exethanter to guide us. He offers to beseech greater powers than his to answer our lingering questions with cryptic one word answers. We have five.
"Who we speaking with?"
-Gambler
[Part of] "the group that includes The Inquisitor, Dignitary, Emissary. Did they create the the dread domains?"
-Yes
"Would the people of Barovia benefit if Strahd would die?"
-Experiment
"How can I leave Barovia without the consent or death of Strahd?"
-Unlikely
And then the final question: "Who in Barovia has the best potential to replace Strahd as the Dark Lord of Barovia?"
At this point the room felt weird. Everything started to get heavy with power and arcana. Above table, our DM is giddy with the possibility and we hold our breaths waiting for the answer.
I decide that as things get weird, I'm going to pull shadows.
All the shadows that we expect to leave, leave. (Some of our party made deals at the temple, and they have new lingering shadows with their pact makers.)
Except. Exethanter's shadow explodes outward. Instead of one skeletal shadow, now 13 shades reach out from him across the walls, all looming larger than life and focused on us as the lich briefly becomes their puppet and the Dark Powers themselves answer our final question:
The Young Card
The Resurrected
The Crone
The Loyal
The Administrator
The Hunter
The Fortuitous
Seven potential new Dark Lords that the Dark Powers are eying across Barovia. Seven souls we may or may not know who could reshape the domain if Strahd is dealt with. And the Dark Powers are watching them and us.
Right now, I've got some theories, but nothing solid.
The Young Card is likely Arabelle, the young seer child we rescued. Definitely something up with her
The Resurrected might be Patrina or Ismark, as we have the means to resurrect them both. Patrina I think will have the rage and ambition to become a Dark Lord, Ismark I think might be broken enough when we call him back.
The Crone could be Madam Eva herself, seeing as Baba Lysaga is dead.
The Loyal and The Administrator, I think, could be Ludmilla and Rahadin. Both titles can apply to both of them imo. And Rahadin definitely has some reasons to possibly want his dear brother put to fucking rest. He got politely Sergei'd and Strahd stole the mother of his child. Also hello hi. My Remi is his child.
The Hunter has to be Rictavio, he's got his own curses going around and fates and Dark Powers are already messing with him.
The Fortuitous is the one I have a lot of questions about. It feels... very open. Arrigal? Viktor? The Abbot? One of us? No one is really "fortunate" in Barovia

Session 53
Session Doc
Folder
There be Curse of Strahd spoilers here... probably
On The Road Again
When we begin the session, we immediately go into more discussion about the deities and I/Arabelle offer them some information to give the party an idea of what we are working with.
The Lady of the Forest, also known as The Seeker, was commonly associated with things like Divination, past, future, fate, flowers, vegetation, wildlife, life cycle. Out of character I gave the examples of the Three fates and Persephone so my players could understand the vibes I was aiming for. Her symbols include antlers, ravens / raven wings, wreaths of flowers. Her domains would have been Nature, Life.
The Lady of the Swamp, also known as The Weaver, commonly was associated with Connection to The Weave, Magic, Water in all its forms, dreams, nightmares. The examples I gave were Hecate, Mystra, and Eldath. Her symbols were usually spiders, snakes, boar tusks, reeds. Her domains were Knowledge and Trickery.
The Lady of the Mountain was also known as The Huntress. Her usual associations were death, Afterlife, precious stones, ores, and metals, lightning and thunder. I described her as having big Pluto vibes. Her symbols were a wolf head with ram horns, ram horns alone, and gemstones. Her domains would have been Death and Tempest. She also gets a little extra bit of lore: She is a grim reaper-like character, or rather a grim hunter. With a pack of wolves at her heels she hunts for those whose time has come to an end, never missing with her spear.
They go back to their home for the rest of the day to discuss this heap of information. They also spitball ideas as to who might make good champions. Vondal thinks Jander and Ireena, Bedlam thinks Victor and Stella.
Sergei says that he thinks Okrin and Jander would make good guardians while Ireena would make a good priestess. He knows that Okrin and Jander have zealous faith for their deities and sees that as an ideal quality. He also feels that they would be fully capable of preserving the longevity of the shrines. He also feels like the position of priestess is not unlike the position she would have had in the Church of Saint Alexei, had she stayed there. He’s also hoping, maybe a little selfishly, that some divine protection would aid her in the fight against Strahd.
For the first time, the spirit of the previous owner of Okrin’s cursed spear speaks to him from the weapon. Kavan also pushes for Okrin to take one of the positions of guardian. If he were not worthy to, he would not have been granted the benefits of the spear.
Okrin seems flattered but mentions he wasn’t really planning on sticking around after all this was over and done with. Jander says it sounds like a dream but he doesn’t know if he’d be accepted by followers of the Ladies since he’s a vampire. This is where Kavan chimes in and tells Okrin that Jander needs to stop whining, when Kavan was alive he was known as the Living Vampire because he drank blood. Jander is still skeptical and says times have changed a great deal. “Let’s cross that bridge when we get to it, shall we?”
They suspect that if Ireena takes the priestess position, she can still get her lycanthropy cured that way. “Does she even want her lycanthropy cured?” Bedlam’s player thinks to ask. I tell them that I and she don’t really know. She doesn’t like the pain of transforming, but she likes the power and freedom that come with her forms. I think the thought of trying to tame her lycanthropic nature has crossed her mind.
Ireena and Vondal take their wolfsbane tinctures and everyone turns in for the night. Except, they find out Ilya is a born werewolf. They are able to safely lock him in the wine cellar, though one of their couches is destroyed in the process. In the morning they find out from him that his lycanthropic nature just started showing itself not too long ago, some nights he can control it better than others, but he’s still learning. He tells them normally the Krezkov children get restrained in the cellar of the house. One of the nights Ilya wanted to prove himself and snuck out of the basement and ended up getting snagged by the werewolf pack.
Ilya doesn’t know that his twin Peitra was killed in the werewolf raid that night, nor does he know Peitra was brought back by the Abbess.
Around 10 am, the party leaves Vallaki for Krezk on a mission to deliver Ilya to his family. They decided to bring Ireena, Jander, and Lancelot with them this time.
They Let Ireena drive the cart this time with Jander sitting up front with her. Vondal, Bedlam, Ilya, and Lancelot hang out inside the cabin while Veledrel and Okrin sit on the roof of the wagon.
Okrin notices a foot trail branching from the main road. They pull over to investigate and find a spike pit without falling into it. At the bottom of it lie spikes and several skeletons, animal and human. Veledrel shoots some fire bolts into the pit to destroy the spikes and hopefully save someone in the future. On the way back to the wagon they muse and wonder who’s trap that might be.
They reach a point where the road branches off in several directions and resting near the signpost is a wagon and a family tending to the horses. After talking to them the party found out they are leaving Zeidenburg because a man’s head spontaneously exploded and they were afraid to live there after that. The party quietly suspected Lyssa as they boarded their own wagon again and headed on their way.
After a while of travel, the sound of a herd of goats comes from the woods. Bedlam is curious and has the wagon stopped and goes to investigate with Okrin, Veledrel says “let me know if you need anything burned!” and stays with the wagon and everyone else. In the woods, they find basically a gibbering mouther but made out of goats. Bedlam quickly calls for the rest of the party, and Vel because this definitely needs to be burned. They all fight the horrible creature and kill it after a few rounds and move on down the road.
They have a few encounters they avoid by helping Ireena make the animal handling checks to maneuver past them.
At one point the fog thickens and they see bodies hanging from the trees, all of them the same classes as the players. They are thoroughly creeped out by this but they carry on.
It starts getting dark and they decide to pull over and spend a night in the Tower on the Lake. It's like a second home at this point. They deal with their lycanthropic companions accordingly and have a decent night together.
They waste no time in the morning getting back on the road to Krezk. Jander takes some time to sleep in the wagon.
One of the notable interactions they had was at the next crossroads. They could see someone wearing a long red cloak followed by a carriage coming from Tsolenka Pass. They hear a familiar laugh and debate whether or not they should engage with Anastrasya, but they ultimately decide to see what’s up.
She rides up on an undead warhorse and heckles them. Bedlam inquires as to what brings her to these parts and she explains that she was in Ziedenburg inducting Bugomistress Wachter and she’s also now tasked with bringing this gift back to Castle Ravenloft. As it turns out, the gift is a young girl, and she’s part of a monthly tithe to Count Strahd.
Bedlam heckles her about Strahd running an orphanage with Gertruda being there too. Anastraya says they’ll probably just toss this new girl in the woods and let Volenta hunt her for sport, “at least that would be entertaining!” she laughs. She also mentions to them that Ludmilla fed some lady to her pet Hugo- some little pet the abbott was working on? Tore her to pieces like she was nothing.
Rahadin, on his own undead warhorse from behind the carriage, clears his throat, signaling to Anastrasya to get moving. Bedlam goes to pet her warhorse and casts dispel magic, causing her to fall to the ground. He laughs and she snarls, picking herself up. She swings at him with her claw attack, landing one and dealing 11 damage. She also shoves him prone and laughs at him. He picks himself up, his chest bleeding and his shirt ripped, he climbs up on the wagon and says “Okay guys enough messing around, let’s go” and they get moving. Anastrasya looks back at Bedlam and casts Message, saying “Tell me where I can find you tonight,”
To which he replies, “Meet me outside Krezk after nightfall, if you can sneak away that long." Once Bedlam was certain he was out of her sight, he let Veledrel heal him.
After driving on the road for a while, they notice the flickering of a campfire and the sound of a kerfuffle. The party pulls over to investigate and all roll amazing stealth. They approach the scene to find three beastfolk from the Abbey. After listening to them for a minute, they gather that the beastfolk have left the Abbey and are struggling to survive on their own in the woods. They were currently arguing over starting a campfire. The party didn’t really feel comfortable revealing themselves, so Veledrel ended up firebolting the fire into existence timed with the beastfolk striking the flint. They let the folk celebrate amongst themselves as they snuck back to the wagon and went along their merry way.
They rattle down the road for a bit longer and can see the Krezk junction just up ahead. We thought that was a perfect place to end the session for the day!

ariel -- fmk: alice, wendy, arabelle
“Ohh, that’s kind of a tough one, to be honest? I think I’d marry Wendy, to be honest? She seems more like a motherly type and I think we’d really balance each other out! Fuck Arabelle – her eyes are everything. That leaves Alice to die. I’m so sorry.”

fem!reader x drew mcintyre
reader was just a regular American girl who has some royal family members in Scotland. Drew is the heir to the Scottish throne, and he needed to marry to become king. Drew and reader were married only days after they met, making reader a Scottish princess. both were against the wedding. now, the two want nothing to do with each other unless they have to attend a public event, until one night ...
word count: 3.6k
warnings: prince!drew, arguments, arranged marriage (ig that's what you can call it?), angst, a tiny bit of fluff
— this was originally gonna be one part but now it’s two bc that’s just the way the writing brought me. this was also gonna go in a completely different direction than it did but now this is it. enjoy —
part 2 || masterlist || request an imagine here
***
You're getting ready in your chambers. The maids are helping you get ready for the annual New Years Ball that the royal family of Scotland puts on every January 1st. Your long Y/H/C colored hair is being curled by one of the maids while another does your makeup. A third maid is making sure your dress and shoes are ready for you for when your hair and makeup are done.
Balls are not your thing. Actually, going out in public with your husband is not your thing. It's only a few times a week but you're not all about the fake smiles and hand-holding when you were never supposed to marry him anyway.
Being a princess was not on your list of things to be in life. You were an up and rising professional wrestler. Your great Aunt Blair asked you to come to Scotland to meet someone while you were wrestling on Ring of Honor. You had no idea that she meant that she actually volunteered you to marry the heir to the Scottish throne.
The maid doing your hair throws some little white flowers with a sparkly silver lining on the end of the petals. The maid doing your makeup has done a silver smokey eye look with some highlight, blush, and nude lipstick color.
Your nails were done earlier in the day. You got an acrylic French manicure. The nails are kind of long and oval-shaped.
"Princess," one of the maids says. "Yer dress is ready for ya when ya're."
You look at the ballgown hanging up in your large closet and sigh softly.
Once your hair and makeup are done, you get up. One of the maids grabs the dress. You take off the long, silky robe and the dress is pulled over your head. You're zipped up and the maids puff out the skirt.
The silver ball gown is very poofy with a small trail. The dress is strapless and very sparkly. The neck dips down a little bit. The top is tight and gets poofy at the waist. You put on silver heels to match the dress.
You put on silver earrings and a necklace, as well as your diamond engagement ring and silver wedding band.
There's a knock on your door as one of the maids put on a silver tiara since you are the princess of Scotland. Another one answers the door.
"Oh, yer highness," she says, bowing. "The princess is almost ready."
A male voice says, "Thank ya, Miss Arabel." Your husband, Drew, is at the door.
After some finishing touches, you're finally ready. You walk up to the door and look at Drew, who's dressed nicely in a black and white suit with a silver tie to match you. His hair in a neat ponytail on the back of his head. He's also wearing his wedding band.
"Ready?" he asks. You can hear the annoyance in his voice.
You nod and mumble, "Sure."
Drew hooks his arm with yours and the two of you head down to the ballroom.
You wait at the door with Drew's father and brother. The royal family is announced together. Drew's father, the King of Scotland, says, "Y/N, ya look stunning. Doesn't she, Drew?" He looks at his eldest son.
Drew just nods and says, "Sure, it's a little too much though."
Anger rises within you as Drew's dad signals for the door to be opened. The guard at the door opens the door and another guard yells, "Introducing the Royal Family of Scotland. The king, Andrew, Prince Drew, Princess Y/N, and Prince John."
Music plays and a fake smile forms on your lips as you follow Drew's father into the large ballroom. Most of the room is made of gold and a large chandelier hangs on the ceiling.
"The princess looks stunning."
"Look at the princess."
The comments make you blush and the fake smile turns real. Drew looks down at you without you knowing.
You and Drew mingle, talking with guests together. Drew steals occasional glances at you but you don't notice as you laugh with the guests.
Being an American, you're still learning about all the Scottish traditions. You've only been over here for a few months so everyday is a learning experience. The guests ask what you did for the holidays with Drew and his family since it's your first time in the country.
"Oh, we celebrated Christmas the way we do in America," you explain to the guests who asked. "Christmas Eve dinner, presents on Christmas morning, and Christmas dinner on Christmas Day. Drew and I also watched some Christmas movies that night. I've heard that Scotland's Christmas traditions are similar to America's."
You added the part about Drew to make it seem like you and your husband actually spent time together on Christmas. After dinner, you went off to your separate chambers and you watched Christmas movies over FaceTime with your friend who now works in NXT, Candice LeRae.
The guests are all very interested. Then the music changes and Drew asks, "M'lady, may I have this dance?"
You look up at Drew and say, "Uh, yeah. Sure." He takes your hand and you excuse yourself from the small group and walk to the dance floor with Drew.
He takes one of your hands in his and the other goes to your waist. You hold up your very poofy skirt so you don't trip.
The dance is slow at first, to make sure you don't trip. Once you're both in sync with each other and you're sure you won't trip, Drew speeds up the movements.
"Wow," Drew says. "My toes aren't bruised yet. Looks like those dance lessons 're paying off."
You stare up at Drew, who is standing tall above you at six foot five. "You're so funny, Drew," you say, rolling your eyes. "I almost peed from laughing so hard."
Drew says, "And there's the sarcasm I absolutely just love about ya."
"As if you love anything about me," you mumble to yourself.
The air turns tense and he says, "Ya could only wish that I'd love ya, or anything about this relationship."
Rolling your eyes, you say, "Maybe if you spent time with me, maybe you'd actually start liking things about this relationship. You only married me to become king when your father relinquishes the crown in a few months."
He looks around and says in a hush tone, "Believe it or not, Y/N, but I married ya for several reasons. Yes, I needed t'marry t'become king but I was excited to start a family. Then ya got here and were nothing like I expected. Yeah, I have an attitude with ya but that's because ya have one with me all the time."
Annoyance rises within you and you say, "I gave up my career to come here. I gave up my dreams of wrestling for WWE and winning titles for the company. I'm not happy I'm in this marriage, Drew. I married a stranger and you're still a stranger to me."
Guests start to look at you and Drew so he takes your hand and whisks you off to a more private area in one of the hallways. You trip over your gown as you follow closely behind Drew.
The door closes and now you're alone with Drew. He looks at you and says, "I'm sorry that ya gave up wrestling to come here and marry me, Y/N. I'm not that happy about it either but if I wanted t'succeed my father then I had'ta marry someone, and that someone is ya."
"You could've picked someone in the country, Drew," you say. "Seriously, you had to pick me."
Drew says, "Yer aunt spoke very highly of ya when she would visit my father. When my father told me I needed t'marry, my mind went t'ya. I didn't think about the repercussions ya would face when I told my father I wanted ya t'be my wife."
Sighing, you say, "Wrestling was taken away from me and I moved away to a country to marry a prince. It's been overwhelming for me and you are nowhere to be seen. I've been taking princess lessons for months and I'm still struggling. It doesn't help I'm alone, Drew, in a foreign country. I don't even have wrestling anymore because I 'can't risk getting hurt'. It's not a fairytale ending like in the books."
There's a silence between the two of you before Drew says, "It still can be"
You look at Drew and ask, "What does that mean?"
He meets your eyes and suddenly you feel butterflies. You've never felt butterflies in your stomach since meeting Drew.
"I just thought that maybe before the coronation that maybe we can go t'America and see a few wrestling shows," he says slowly. "I'm a big fan myself."
Everyday in Scotland is a learning experience. You didn't know that he was a wrestling fan.
You say, "I'd, uh, like that."
Drew slowly takes your hand and he says, "I also thought that maybe we can share a room together like a married couple should."
Confused, you say, "It was your idea to have the separate chambers since we 'didn't have to be married within the four walls of the castle'. At least that's what you told me."
He says, "Contrary to popular belief, I actually do like ya, Y/N. Why do ya think my mind went t'ya when asked if there was someone I wanted t'marry? The girls in this country are beautiful, don't get me wrong, but ya. There's just something about ya that peeks my interests."
You stare up at Drew and for a second before you say, "We've been married for months and this is all coming out now."
"We've never had this conversation until now," Drew says, shrugging his shoulders a bit. "By the way, ya do look stunning in that dress. Shows yer personality really well."
You get flustered and say, "You said it was too much."
Drew chuckles and says, "I'm just that good of a liar, I guess."
A little bit of annoyance creeps up and you say, "Stop lying to me, Drew. I'm confused and now I have a headache because of what you're saying to me."
He says, "I know, I'm sorry. I can walk ya to yer room if ya wanna go lay down and get rid of that ache."
You soften up a bit and say, "Yeah." That's all you say. That's all you feel like you can say.
So, Drew walks you to your chambers. You notice that you're still holding his hand when you arrive at the door of your room. He turns toward you and says, "Whenever ya would like t'go see those wrestling shows in America then let me know and we'll go, okay?"
You nod and look up at your husband. "Thank you, Drew," you say. "Offering to go see some wrestling shows in my home country sounds really nice."
Drew says, "It's been a while since I've been to America and I'd like t'see where my wife is from."
My wife. He said you were his wife. That was the first time behind closed doors that he's referred to you as his wife.
There's another silence between the two of you before you say, "I'm, um, going to head inside. Take some medicine and lay down."
"Can I stop by later t'make sure yer okay?" he asks slowly and cautiously.
You consider it for a moment before you say, "Yeah, sure. Just come in if you do because knocking may make my headache worse."
Drew nods and says, "Alright."
You look up at Drew and the air between the two of you thickens a bit. Your heart races in your chest as you wait for Drew to do something.
He pushes a loose curl behind your ear before he kisses your cheek lightly. Your heart almost jumps out of your chest when his lips touch your cheek. You look at him as he pulls away from you slowly.
"Goodnight, in case yer asleep when I come check on ya after the party," Drew says quietly.
You nod and say in almost a whisper, "Goodnight."
He shoots you a smile before walking off to the party again. You stand in the hallway for a second, playing with your engagement ring as you watch him walk off.
For the first time in this marriage, Drew's actions and words made you have butterflies in your stomach and made your heart race.
If you didn't know any better then you might be falling for your husband.
***
The moment between you and Drew has melted away by morning. You walked down to breakfast early the next morning and he doesn't even acknowledge your presence at the table.
"Y/N, are ya feeling okay?" Drew's dad asks. "Ya left with Drew and only Drew came back."
Nodding, you say, "Yeah. I just wasn't feeling well so I went to bed a little early. That's all."
Drew finally glances at you and his dad says, "Feeling better this morning, I hope?"
"Depends," you say, looking at Drew. "Is your eldest son going to keep ignoring me like he is right now?"
His dad looks at him and asks, "Is there something wrong?"
You say, "No, nothing's wrong." You get angry and stand up. "Excuse me but I think I'm going to go back to my chambers. I'm not feeling well again."
After you're done talking, you leave and go back to your room. You've just closed the door when there's a knock.
Reluctantly, you go and answer it. Drew stands in the doorway and you say, "Oh, great. It's you. Come to promise me something else then ignore me again?"
Drew says, "Look, I'm sorry. This whole thing is new to me, Y/N. I'm 35 and I haven't been in a serious relationship like this."
"We're not even in a relationship, Drew," you spit at him. "We're legally bind to each other for you to become king."
He says, "I'm trying here, Y/N!" His voice is rising. "I'm fucking trying. We met, were engaged then married within weeks. I'm trying t'be a good husband in public while also trying t'form a relationship with you behind closed doors. It's not easy. Especially because I do want a relationship with ya, Y/N."
You glare at him and say, "Ignoring me isn't trying, Drew."
He says, "I know, Y/N." He rubs his face. "God, I'm terrible at communicating how I feel and this is whole new territory for me."
Deciding to lighten the air, you say, "If you want to be king then you have to work on communication skills there, Drew."
Drew looks at you and says, "I'm gonna pretend that I didn't just hear ya say that."
You smile and say, "Come on, Drew. Lighten up a bit. Here, tell me the truth. How do you feel when you're around me?"
Your husband blinks at you and thinks for a second. He says, "I, uh, I feel nervous. Ya make me a little nervous, Y/N. My heart races when ya're around me, especially when we touch. Um, when ya walk into a room, I feel a knot in my stomach. I don't know what it's called-"
"Butterflies," you say, helping him out. "They're called butterflies in the stomach. It's what happens when we're around someone who we may or may not like."
Drew looks down at you and says, "Sounds like yer talking from experience."
You nod slightly and say, "I am."
He blinks at you and starts to say something before someone walks into the hallway and say, "I apologize for the interruption, your highnesses. Prince Drew, your father has requested your presence in his chambers. Immediately."
Drew nods and says, "One second." He turns toward you. "When I'm done with my father, I'll come back and we can keep talking. Okay?"
You nod and he smiles before walking off quickly.
That's when you notice when there are butterflies in your stomach again.
***
It's hours later and you're still waiting for Drew. You've asked your maids if they've seen him and they've all said that he's still with his father.
You're watching Freaky Friday on Disney Plus when the doors to your chambers open. A red-faced Drew walks in and you ask, "Woah, Fire Face. What's wrong?"
"My father is what's wrong," Drew says. He's pacing around the room and you pause the movie, getting up and walking to him.
You say, "Talk to me, Drew." He doesn't look at you. "Hey, dumbass. I'm your wife, remember? You're supposed to talk to me about this stuff."
Finally, Drew looks down at you. You're so much shorter than him. You're barely five foot four. You're eye level with his chest and you have to tilt your head up to look at Drew.
He says, "My father just told me that we're going on a two week tour of the country. He wants me t'know the country before I ascend the throne."
"What's the matter with that?" you ask, gently stroking Drew's arm to calm him down.
His eyes are on your hand on his arm as he says, "I wanted t'surprise ya with tickets home t'America for the two weeks that we'll be on tour."
Your eyes widen and you say, "We can go when we get back."
Drew says, "When we got t'America, yer friend was gonna meet us in Florida. I got ya cleared t'wrestle in one match in WWE against your friend. It was more than just going t'see some wrestling shows in America. When we got t' ya're hometown, I was gonna take ya t'yer favorite spot that ya told me about before and I was gonna ask if ya wanted t'try and be a real couple."
Your heart sinks into stomach when you see how upset Drew is about this. You say, "You had all that planned out for me? For us?"
He nods and says, "I wanted ya to feel less alone and I wanted ya t'have at least one more match before ya actually have t'give up wrestling."
You console Drew by hugging him. You close your eyes and you say, "I already feel less alone, Drew."
"What about yer one more match?" he asks.
Looking up at Drew, you say, "I've already come to terms with the fact I'll probably never wrestle again. It would have been amazing to be in a WWE ring but I don't need one more match."
His hands rest on your cheeks before he says, "I'll get ya in a WWE ring at some point, Y/N. Ya gave up yer career t'be here. It's the least I can do."
The idea of talking to Drew's father pops into your mind and you say, "I need to do something really quick. Can you excuse me?"
Drew nods and you let go of each other before you walk off to the king's chambers.
At the door, you knock. A "come in" is said from the other side so you open the large doors.
King Andrew sits at his desk and he looks up at you. "Ah, Y/N," he says, getting up. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"Postpone the tour of Scotland," you bluntly say. "Please, sir."
His face hardens a bit as he says, "Drew must've told ya what was happening."
You nod and say, "He did, and he pulled a lot of strings to surprise me back home. Mr. King Sir, he gave me an opportunity to do the thing I love one more time before I give it up to join him by his side as queen of this beautiful country. He wants to take this trip to help us get closer so maybe we could be together behind closed doors as well. Let us take this trip and the day we get back, we can tour this country that I can proudly say I call my second home."
Andrew looks at you as you talk. He leans against his desk and crosses his arms across his chest, looking down at the floor when you're done talking.
You wait for a response.
It's almost an eternity before he says, "I can remember what it was like t'be in love with Drew's mother when we were younger. All the trips we took were always business, never for pleasure. Then she got sick and she died, and I regret that we never got to go on a trip just for pleasure. So, I will postpone the tour so ya and Drew can visit the States, but the day ya get back is the day the tour of Scotland begins."
You smile and say, "Yes, Mr. King Sir. May I go tell Drew the news?"
He nods and dismisses you.
As soon as you're out of the room, you take off back toward your chambers. Drew sits on the small love seat in your room and looks at you when you walk in.
"When do we leave to go to America?"

Medically Inevitable
Chapter 10- Puzzling Pathways
Characters:- Ethan Ramsey, Arielle Valentine, Alyssa Raines, Arabelle Raines, Naveen Banerji, Sienna Trinh, Elijah Greene, Jackie Varma, Landry Olsen, Harper Emery
Pairing:- Ethan Ramsey x Arielle Valentine
Warnings:- Swearing
Arielle’s PoV:-
You wake up quite early with a throbbing head and roll out of bed, making sure not to wake up Belle and Aly. The sun hasn’t risen yet, so you assume it’s around 4. After your morning routine, you pick up Naveen’s latest test reports with a cup of tea and head over to your balcony. Going through it, you can’t find much that catches your eye. You head back inside after an hour and find the duo awake.
“Good morning...”, Belle greets you accompanied with a yawn.
“I thought you were sleeping. I’ll head straight to Flair’s HQ and get ready there with Belle. Our flight ’s at 9pm.”, Aly replies while heading towards the bathroom.
“Hey Belle, are you ready to see daddy again?”, you ask.
“Mhm, can’t wait. I'm going to tell him all about yesterday, it was so much fun.”
“Oh really? What happened yesterday?”, you ask. She launches into a story about how they went to the library and then made pizza for dinner.
“I was going to ask for dessert but I fell asleep. I woke up and saw you sleeping by me. Mommy told me that you brought me here.”, she says with a sheepish grin.
“Well I’m sure you can eat all the ice cream you want when you fly home. Tell daddy to call me, okay?”
“I will!” Aly comes out of the restroom, completely ready.
“Belle, come on. We need to get ready and so does Aunt Arielle.”
“Okay! I’ll be quick!” Aly helps Belle get ready while you decide to make lunch for you and Naveen. You head outside the room to find Jackie and Sienna entering the apartment.
“Good morning Ari! Ines and Kyra just left. I thought you were asleep so I didn’t wake you.”, Si says.
“You both have noon shifts, right? Lucky!”, you reply.
“Yeah, we’ll be nursing our headaches if you need us.”, and with that they both head inside. Opening the fridge, you grab all the ingredients needed for Naveen’s chicken wrap. You get to work, starting with grilling the chicken with a bunch of spices, meanwhile julienning some greens and veggies. After shredding the chicken, you cook the tortillas and layer the fillings, topping them off with dressing and finally wrapping them up. You’re just finished packing the wraps in a container when Aly and Belle come out of your room.
“Alright Belle, it’s time to go. Go say goodbye to everyone.” You point Belle towards Si’s room, she comes out a few minutes later, candy bar in hand.
“Look at what they gave me!”, she shouts with joy leaving both of you to chuckle. She puts the candy bar in her backpack and wraps you up in a hug, or rather your legs. “Bye!...I’ll miss you! When will you come to visit?!”, she asks as you lift her up into your arms and hug her goodbye.
“Maybe during Christmas, okay? Be safe and a good girl!”
“Tell Uncle Ethan and grandpa that I’m leaving!”, She says handing you a few York candies as you lead them to the door. “Bye Arielle, we had a nice time.”, Aly says as she hugs you.
“I did too.” You reluctantly wave them goodbye as they head towards their Über, Belle shouting one last goodbye. “Okay Arielle, time for work.”
A little while later, you’re heading to the nurses’ station after rounds when you see a small crowd near one of the OR’s. Overhearing one of the resident surgeons congratulating Bryce, you head over after the crowd disperses.
“Hey, looks like someone made a good impression!”, you say.
“There was a complication with the surgery and the general surgeon was taking too long to arrive. So I stepped up and performed the procedure, meanwhile scoring a free solo surgery.”, he replies with a smirk.
“Nice! Although I don’t think your friends are happy about that.”, you reply noticing the scowls on the other interns’ faces.
“I came here to be the best surgeon, and right now Dr. Tanaka thinks I’m one of the best.”, he replies.
You smile, “You’re right”-
“Valentine, enough chitchat. Head to the ER.” You whirl around to see Zaid with a scowl on his face.
“Yes, Dr. Mirani!” You shoot Bryce an apologetic look as you head to the ER.
As you enter the E.R. Sarah directs you to the bed of your patient. You find a young woman sitting on the bed along with a guy near her age sitting beside her with a worried expression. As you near them the boy gets up from his seat and to shake hands with you.
"Hi doctor!" He smiles as he shakes your hand enthusiastically.
"Wow, hi and hello," you smile back at both of them and then pick up her chart.
"Willow?" You read out the name.
"That's me, and this is my twin brother, Rowan," she points where the boy is standing.
"Willow and Rowan? Aren't those both-"
"Trees. Yeah. Our parents are uh...outdoorsy type-"
"You can tell the nice doctor, Rowan. She’s a total hippie."
You smile at the twins banter. "What about you too? Have you followed their footsteps?"
Willow grins, "Well I'd say we are... hippie-like."
"We like the environment and all but we also like indoor plumbing," Rowan adds.
"Sounds like a compromise I could get on board with.”, you reply chuckling. Willow laughs.
"How long have you been feeling itchy, Willow?", you ask when noticing her continuously itching her skin.
"Uh...mmm...I’m not sure?" She says nervously.
"She‘s had it for a few weeks now, I guess," Rowan answers.
Nodding, you move closerand notice the darkened spider angiomas under her skin. You take a closer and better look at her eyes to find it jaundiced.
"You haven't had it checked out?" You ask, looking for more symptoms.
"Well, I took her to Mass Kenmore the other day but-" he never gets to finish the sentence as Willow cuts him off.
"But the doctor was a jerk. My friend says the doctors here are much more nice."
Willow's voice is filled with nervousness. But you don’t consider it much thinking it's probably because of her sickness.
"Smart friends," you try to lighten the mood. "Willow, I am going to have to listen to your belly. Lie back." You help her lie down.
"Push your hand on your sides," you order and she does so. "Yeah just like this. Now I'm going to give you a little tap."
You lightly strike one side of Willow's abdomen resting your hand on the other side.
"What are you doing?" Rowan asks both confused and concerned.
"That was fluid wave test for ascites. Fluid buildup in the abdominal cavity," you answer his question.
"What did the doctors at Mass Kenmore say?" You ask after noting the symptoms. Willow and Rowan share a nervous glance.
"He, uh... didn't spend that long with me. He said it's probably the...flu," Willow stammers.
"The flu?" You ask shocked. What doctor in their right mind would diagnose a patient with these symptoms as a flu!
"Yeah? He was kinda sketchy," Rowan trails off.
"He was very sketchy. Just because my chest hurts doesn't mean you have to do the whole consultation with my boobs, right?" Willow lets out a nervous chuckle. Their behavior is suspicious but you decide not to jump to conclusions.
"Okay. What did he prescribe?", you ask.
"Just some antibiotics."
"Antibiotics? But influenza is a virus," you get more concerned now. Was he even a doctor? First he misdiagnosed a simple disease and then he prescribed antibiotics for flu!
"Uh...yeah. So dumb right. He was so...old," Willow tries to laugh it off.
"He was so old, he looked like Yoda," Rowan tries to joke.
"But a mean. A mean Yoda,"Willow adds.
"Okay, but Willow I'm afraid it's not the flu,"you say. "It's likely Hepatitis C."
"Hep C?" Willow asks, her voice tracing fear.
"It sounds scary but it's now curable in a matter of weeks," you try to comfort her.
"That umm...sounds expensive," Rowan says nervously.
"Uhm, yes, Hep C treatment is notoriously costly," you say sadly.
"How costly are we talking?" Willow asks.
"The list cost is $28,000 per month. And we are talking about three months of supply,", you answer.
"It's a lot but it's important for you to get treated," You add, "Hep C causes huge damage to your liver. It can cause total organ failure, even can lead to cancer. It can kill you."
"But how are we supposed to pay for it?" Willow's voice is sad.
"Your insurance can help. Wait a minute, let me take your information,"You say and reach for the paper to note the details down.
"Our insurance info. Uhm...we...gave it to the hospital staff when we got here. Right, Ro?" Willow trails off nervously.
"Yeah, right…" Rowan agrees.
Their behavior looks suspicious to you and suddenly it all clicks into place.
"Wait, you guys don't have insurance, do you?”, you tentatively ask.
The twins look at each other helplessly. "...No. We don't," Rowan says after a brief moment of silence.
"Usually when I’m sick, I just hope for it to go away. But this time the symptoms are getting worse," Willow states.
"Mass Kenmore wouldn't even look at Willow without insurance," Rowan adds.
"And we definitely can't afford 28 grand a month," Willow states.
"Yeah, I know. It's total bull. Believe me it makes my gut churn when I have to tell patients they can't afford what they need to survive.", you reply with anger.
"But what can we do about it?" Willow sighs.
"I am not sure…" you try to think of a way to help them.
"Please doctor. I'll do whatever I can to help Willow but I don't earn much either. Our parents don't have any savings. They don't even believe in modern medicine," Rowan says angrily.
"I told my mom I was sick and she said to sleep with an amethyst on my chest," Willow adds.
"We're already in debt from college. This bill will ruin us. Isn't there anything for me to do. Could I work it off somehow?" Rowan asks.
"It's not a restaurant, Ro. We can't do dishes or something. We'll just have to...go," Willow says sadly and gets down the bed.
"But you heard what Dr. Valentine said could happen," Rowan says concerned.
Willow get up to leave.
"Wait, don't go yet. I'll see what I can do," you stop her.
"You'll help us?" Rowan smiles hopefully.
"I can't promise anything. But I'll try," you say sincerely.
"Thank you Dr.Valentine," Willow smiles and for the first time the smile seems genuine.
You reply back with a smile,"First things first. We can't treat Hep C without knowing it's genotype. So I'll need to draw blood sample."
After admitting Willow, you’re trying to think of a way to get the vial to lab. But you know the you can't hand it over to the pathology lab without a resident's signature. And you'd need to do it without anyone asking questions. That's when you see Ines. "The just person for the work," you think and walk towards her pleading for the best. "Hi Arielle. All done in the E.R.?" she asks as you approach.
"Yeah. I was actually looking for you!" You try to smile but your nervousness gets in between.
But she doesn't really seem to notice the hesitation."At you service. What do you need?",She asks smiling. You hesitate for a moment. Weighing your options you decide on telling her the truth, even though it might have risks.
"My patient has Hep C. And I need to run a blood test for further treatment but…" You pause not sure how to say,"but they don't have any insurance."
Ines understands what you are saying and her face falls slightly.
"Oh…"she says after a moment of silence.
"I admitted her. But she can't afford to be here, let alone treatment. She wanted to leave," you state sadly.
"Then I'm afraid you'll have to let her."
"But…" you stop not knowing what to say. You thought that out of all people maybe Ines would understand and help you.
"One of the hardest thing is to learn you can't help everyone. As a doctor your responsibility is to help the people you can help." She puts a comforting hand on your shoulder before walking away. You lean against the nearest wall as a wave of disappoinment washes over you. Later, you head towards the cafeteria for a quick break and then a few more post-op check-in’s.
After checking on one of your post-op patients, you carefully sneak around the construction site and enter Naveen’s room, lunch in hand.
“Sunshine! What a lovely surprise!”
“Hi dad, I brought lunch. Belle and Aly went back to Flair. Their flight’s at 9.”
“Belle was a nice surprise yesterday. You know, I think she managed to make Ethan like her.”, he replies.
“Yeah, she told me all about how she went to the library and Uncle Ethan read her a bunch of stories.”, you say as you draw blood for another test. Filling the vial with blood, you dispose of the needle and wash your hands.
“So, what have you made for lunch?”
“Your special chicken wraps.”, you reply with a smile as you hand one to him. You both take a bite. “So? How is it? Does it resemble yours at least a little?”
“It’s quite close, but the seasoning is slightly off.”
You roll your eyes. “That’s because it’s your recipe! And no one can perfectly make your recipes!”, you exclaim.
“She’s right Naveen. Your recipes are quite tricky to master.” You turn around to find Ethan standing in the doorway.
“Dr. Ramsey. I looked over the files but I couldn’t find much. The blood sample I drew is over there, I think we should try again but maybe..”, you discuss with him about the next steps.
“Ethan. Arielle.” Both of you turn to him. “Will you let a man eat in peace?! Both of you, eat and then discuss whatever you need to.”
“Fine.” You hand a wrap to Ethan.
“Have one, I made a lot more than I can eat.” He tentatively takes one and takes a bite.
“It’s quite good.”
“Thank you. I almost forgot, Belle asked me to tell you that she was leaving tonight and asked me to give these to you.” You hand out the minty chocolate treats to both of them, popping one in your mouth. “Seems like you made quite a good impression on Belle, she likes you a lot.”
“I’m convinced that Ethan likes her more than me! You should have seen him yesterday!”, Naveen exclaims as Ethan groans. Your pager beeps with the results of one of your patient’s tests. Sighing, you pop the last piece in your mouth and close the empty box.
“I have to go, I’ll see you later.”, you say as you kiss him on the cheek and gather your stuff. “Oh and Dr. Ramsey, I didn’t find anything much but I think this might be a small lead.”, you say pointing to the sample and highlighted part of the report. He nods as you exit the room.
After discussing a treatment plan with one of your patients, you’re heading towards the locker room to wrap up your shift early, when your phone chimes. It’s Bryce.
After responding, you change into a pair of jeans and a spaghetti strap top and grab your stuff from the locker. You head to the parking lot, and drive your way home. You unlock your door and find Si dressed up in a 30s theme. “Si! You look beautiful! That side twist is gorgeous! I didn’t know that people dressed up for this.”, you exclaim as you take off your heels.
“Well, I won’t be the only one! I got you a little something.” She rushes into her room and comes out holding a bag in her hand. “I picked out this ivory outfit for you, try it on!”, she exclaims as she hurriedly pushes you into your room to get dressed.
“Okay, okay! Give me a sec!” You pull out the beautiful outfit from the bag and lay it on your bed as you strip and carefully slip on the silky outfit. You tentatively open the door as Si gasps. “So...what do you think?”
“Oh my gosh! You look so pretty, all that’s missing is a matching hairstyle and jewellery. Quick, sit here! I’ll do your hair!” She quickly ushers you on your stool and starts to style your hair with the combs on your vanity. Pulling your hair into a side swept bun, she applies a coat of a pink shade on your lips and lastly helps you add matching accessories. You eye a pair of earrings that match Si’s dress.
“Here! Wear these!” She gasps.
“No way! They’re way too expensive, I can’t wear these!”, she counters.
“Oh shut up! You’re my best friend! You can wear whatever’s in my room.” You quickly trade her earrings and clasp yours on her as she looks in the mirror.
“Wow...these are really pretty.”
“Then keep them, they look much better on you.”, you reply.
“What, no! I can’t possibly”-
“Nope! I won’t take no for an answer.” She finally agrees and hugs you. You both look at yourselves at your floor length mirror for one last time. “Wait! One last touch!”, you say, carefully clasping on the necklace that Naveen gave you.
“Give me your phone! This is a perfect opportunity for a photo op.” She leads to a luminous corner in your room and snaps a pic as you do the same for her.
“These came out amazing! I’m posting mine, then we’ll leave.” You both take a few minutes to post your pictures. Just as you’re about to leave, Si’s phone chimes. She picks up the phone and replies, hiding the screen from you. “Hey, you can go without me. I’ll be there a bit later.”, she says.
“Okay…”, you bid goodbye and leave the apartment. You’re strolling down the sidewalk towards Boston Common, eyes sweeping through the crowd for any sign of your friends when finally you spot them.
“Damn, you look even classier in person!”, Bryce says patting the spot next to him. You place your things nearby and squeeze in by Bryce.
“Where’s Sienna? She said she was waiting for you.”, Elijah asks.
“I don’t know.”, you respond. “Just as we were about to leave, she got a text and said she’ll come by a little later.” Just then, you hear a familiar voice greet Elijah.
“Hey.” You all turn around to see Phoebe.
“Ohh...this guy’s got it baaaad…”, Jackie says, noticing the blush on Elijah’s cheeks.
“Shut up!”, you whisper to Jackie.
“Hey Phoebe. You came.”, Elijah spits out, not knowing what to say.
“Yeah...I said I would make it.”, Phoebe replies equally as awkward. You wince at the awkwardness and decide to play the role of Cupid once again.
“Phoebe! I’m glad you made it. Come sit here!”, you say gesturing to the comfy space by Elijah as he mouths a thank you. The pair sit together and click by talking about Star Trek, leaving you, Bryce and Jackie waiting for the screening. You’re about to ask Bryce when the movie starts when a smell of buttery goodness wafts towards you. All three of you turn around to find Sienna and Danny holding a small picnic basket. “Ohh...so that’s what the text was about. Let’s see how she gets out of this.”, you think. “Hey Danny, Sienna didn’t tell us she invited you! Come on, join us!” You scoot over, leaving just enough room for the pair to sit together.
“Hey Arielle. I had an idea, so I went and picked up a few pastries from a nearby bakery.”, he replies with a slight blush on his face. “Ahhh! These two are so cute!”, you think. Sienna hands out the treats as the opening credits roll. You sink your front teeth into a chocolatey croissant. “Mmm...this is good! Great idea!”, you exclaim. All seven of you relax and watch the movie.
After a while, Landry perks up saying, “Hey Arielle, did you find anything on Patient X?”
“Oh yeah Ari! Did you find anything?”, Elijah asks.
You carefully mull over what to say. “Umm…I don’t know anything. “, you say.
“Bullshit!”, says Jackie.
Thankfully, Si comes to your defence. “She’s serious! Zaid was chewing her out today for asking a bunch of questions.” Jackie rolls her eyes as everyone shifts their attention back to the movie. You mouth a thank you to Sienna and watch the movie. A little while later, you and Elijah are getting some drinks for the gang.
“So, I noticed you were a little down when I saw you before lunch today. What happened?”, he asks. You sigh and explain Willow’s condition. His face hardens.
“Elijah?....Elijah?!”
He blinks and turns to you. “Oh sorry.”
“Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, it’s alright.” You can clearly tell he’s lying.
“I’m not an idiot.”
He sighs, “It’s always that, don’t treat the condition or you’ll die; or treat the condition you you’ll be financially ruined.” You give him a look.
“...I was diagnosed with chronic spinal cord damage when I was 5. A surgeon came up with a solution to save my life, but it bankrupted my parents. They had to sell everything for my surgery. That’s why I wanted to become a doctor, you know? If it weren’t for that surgeon, I wouldn’t have been here right now. That’s what I wanted to do, find solutions for people who have nowhere to turn to.”, tears slowly trailing down his face.
Your heart wrenches. “I’m so sorry Elijah. And for what it’s worth, I know your parents would have made that decision over and over again for you.”
“I know. Do you know that there are government clinical trials for some patients?”, he asks.”
“Oh! I didn’t know that.” He doesn’t get any better.
“You are worth it, do you hear me? You are an amazing, wonderful and sweet person and whoever has gotten the pleasure to know you are blessed.”
He nods as he returns your hug. You buy the drinks and head back towards your friends.
Long into the movie, you’re completely bored and lost. “Does anybody know what’s going on?”, you ask.
“Well, Rosie’s supposed to hide out in Richard’s office until he leaves for the files of...or Wait I think it was...Oh forget it! I’m lost too!”, Landry exclaims. Your friends start talking, ignoring the movie as Bryce turns to you.
“So, you want to ditch this place?”
“I thought you were the one who said this would be ‘fun’!”, you counter.
“Hey! No point in making mistakes longer than you need to! Now, you coming or not?”, he asks.
You give him an incredulous look. “Where would we go? And I’m dressed like this!”
“We’ll go on an adventure. And maybe fashion you up some clothes meanwhile.”
“Okay, lead the way!” The two of you sneak away from the group and Bryce leads you to a mall. “Really? A mall? This is your definition of an ‘adventure’?”
“Well first, we need to get you some clothes. Second, who said a mall can’t be an adventure?! Just follow my lead!” You and Bryce enter the mall to find the mall mostly empty. “Okay, first you need an outfit change! So, does Miss Celebrity shop at stores like Forever 21 or only high-end brands?”, he teases you.
You roll your eyes. “I shop at Forever 21! And a bunch of other stores that aren’t high-end!”, you defend yourself.
“Okay then! First stop, picking out an outfit for you.”, he walks to the directory and scans the list for Forever 21. “Ah! There it is, second floor. Let’s go!” Both of you take the escalator up and enter the near empty store. “Now, I want you to sit here-“, he pats a bench near the dressing room, “While I go pick out an outfit for you.”
Before you can protest, he twirls around and heads into the women’s section. You decide to check your messages, seeing new texts from Si and Ethan and click on them.
You’re about to go look for Bryce when he appears out of nowhere. “Crap! You scared me!” He gives you a sheepish grin.
“Hehe, sorry about that. Now, go try this on and see if you need a different size.” He hands you the black bag and pushes you into one of the dressing rooms. You open it to find a lace black bralette with an olive green cover-up and jeans. “Hmm...not bad scalpel jockey.”
You slip on the outfit and open your door as Bryce lets out a low whistle.
“Looks like it fits perfectly.”, he replies.
“It does.” You quickly hand over the clothes to Bryce and give him your purse, but he doesn’t take your purse. He comes back in a few minutes and tosses the outfit through the top. “Hey! A little heads-up would be nice!” You slip on your new outfit and fold your other outfit into the bag. You head out of the dressing room and sit on a bench near Bryce, who’s texting someone.
“It’s Jackie. She wanted to know where we went.”, he says without looking up.
“I told Sienna though.”, you reply confused.
“Apparently, both pairs of lovebirds are grossing Jackie out.” You both laugh. “Just a sec, okay.” You nod and look at the nearby display of nail polish when you hear a click. Turing around, you see Bryce smiling and your phone chimes. Pulling out your phone, you see that Bryce took a picture of you and sent it to you.
“Hmm...who knew scalpel jockey had such photography skills?! I might post this.”, you tease him as you post it.
“So, does that make up for wasting your time?”, he asks.
“Maybe...depends on what adventure we’re going on next.”, you reply.
“Well, first we need fuel for our adventure. We’re getting some food!”, Bryce exclaims.
“You really know the way to a girl’s heart.” He flashes his signature grin and leads you to Chick-fil-A after paying for your outfit.
“How do you know I like Chick-fil-A?”, you ask.
“I don’t .”, he nonchalantly replies. He heads inside and orders two chicken burgers with a side of fries and an Oreo milkshake. You both take a seat in the booth after picking out your favourite sauces and water.
“I come here only for the mayo, and then stuff as many packets as I can in my pockets. It’s sooo good!”, you exclaim as he laughs.
“You remind me of my sister.”, he says.
“Careful Lahela, then I might come to the conclusion that you like me as a friend.”, you tease. He’s about to reply when the employee calls out your order. You get up but he doesn’t let you, and carries the tray full of goodness and carbs back to your table. “Such a gentleman.”, you say. Taking the burger from the tray, you unwrap it and take a bite (not before adding a little extra mayo, of course). “Ohmygod…”
“There’s nothing like comfort food.”, he says handing you a spoon for the Oreo milkshake.
“Yeah, comfort food becomes your best friend after a breakup.”, you say.
He raises an eyebrow. “And when was this?” He notices the hesitation on your face and places a hand on your shoulder, “Hey, it’s alright. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.”
“No, it’s okay...he was my first love. We met at med school, he was in his second year of med school for neuroscience and it was my first for internal medicine. It was my first week, I was in Hopkins’ central library trying to reach for a book and managed to pull down the whole section of books somehow.”
He chuckles, “Sounds like you, alright!” You roll your eyes.
“It sounds cliche, but he helped me up and with the books, then took me out to cheer me up. After that, we met up more and more and found ourselves going on dates. He didn’t have classes together so we mostly met up during the weekends and texted everyday. Later, I met Laura.”
“Who’s Laura?”, he asks.
“She is...was my best friend through all of med school. I’ll explain. We started dating three months later and made it official at the end of the year. We took it slow, both of us respected each other’s careers and dreams so we never had many disagreements. It was amazing, all 5 and a half years of med school. I had a wonderful, kind considerate boyfriend who knew everything about me and a best friend that always had my back. Everything was perfect, he never used me for my connections and treated me as a normal person.”, you say.
“Hah! Imagine my surprise when I looked you up on Insta!”, he says. You laugh, remembering the day when Raf and Bryce had found out about your celeb status.
“Because he was studying to be a neurosurgeon, he had an extra year so we both ended med school in the same year. His medical idol is Dr. Harper Emery, he would talk about her all the time and really held a level of respect.”, you continue.
“She is mine, too. Have you met her, like personally?”, he asks.
“I have once. It was quite a few years back during one of Edenbrook’s charity galas. Naveen had taken me there as his plus one and I met her, she was someone that you would just hold a certain level of respect.”, you say.
“Woah, woah, woah. Hold on, do you mean Naveen, as in Naveen Banerji, as in the greatest diagnostian of all time?!”, he exclaims. You wince, completely forgetting about that. Taking your time, you explain what happened with him, except about his illness. “Damn, that’s impressive. I mean, changing your last name and starting completely fresh without using any influence. Anyways, continue.”
“As you know, my inspiration and my idol was Dr. Ramsey, and we both wanted to get into Edenbrook for our residency. Laura wanted to go to Johns Hopkins Hospital for their peds program. And after our final exams, we found out that I had gotten into Edenbrook for my residency...and he didn’t. Laura didn’t get into Johns Hopkins either.”, you say recalling the horrid memories after that moment.
“I’m guessing that’s where the problem started.”, he says.
You nod. “At first, he was really happy for me and so was Laura. But after a week, he started acting cold, like he was keeping a grudge against me. I tried talking to him but he didn’t try to talk it out. One day, I couldn’t take it anymore and burst, screaming at him why he was doing this.”, your throat hitches.
“What happened?”, you can see the anger in his eyes.
“...he had the audacity to say that I had used people to get into Edenbrook for my residency. I was shocked, having thought that the person who knew me so well thought I was using my name to rig the system. We didn’t talk for a week after that, and when I was cleaning out my clothes from his closet,...I found a velvet box. It was an engagement ring.”
Bryce’s eyes go wide. If only he knew what happened next. “I thought that we could fix this, I thought that he loved me, our relationship could be saved and we would be happy. So, I knocked on his door but no one answered. After a while, I couldn’t wait so I unlocked the door with the key he gave me and…” You take a deep breath. “...Laura was kissing him….and he was kissing her back.” By now, tears are slowly making their way down your face.
“That asshole! What the hell was he thinki”- He stops at the sight of your face and takes a seat beside you, comforting you. “Hey, hey, hey. Don’t cry now. You’re one of the strongest women I’ve ever met and I’ve met a lot!” That makes you smile a bit. “That guy is an idiot, alright, for letting one of the most kind, compassionate and selfless women I’ve ever known. He doesn’t deserve you, alright!?“
You nod, brushing away your tears. “Okay.”
“Now, no more crying. Tonight, we’re going to have the time of our life! Now, finish up and we’ll go.” You finish up your food as Bryce tells you about the crazy parties he went to at Stanford.
“Oh my god! I can’t believe you did that!”, you shriek.
“I did. Now, let’s go!” After throwing away everything, you head out and Bryce leads you inside Walmart.
“What are we doing here?”, you ask.
“Just watch.” You watch as he strolls casually near a rack of clothing and yells, “There’s a snake in here!!” Your mouth and eyes widen in horror as everyone screams and runs away, leaving racks and displays to topple over each other, making a mess. “Oh sorry guys! It was just a scarf!” He quickly runs away pulling you with him out of the store before the employees can see you.
“What the hell did you do that for?!”, you half shout.
“What are you talking about, that was epic!? My mission today is to cheer you up, and I will do whatever it takes even if I have to makeshift a zip line from the 5th to the 1st floor.” You try to hide a smile but unsuccessfully end up bursting with laughter.
“Those people were sooo scared! And then I swear, one lady looked like she was about to bite your head off!!”, you say.
“Well, we’re not done yet.”, he drags you away before you can protest. A few minutes later, you’re standing in front of Urban Outfitters. “I have one more idea, and then it’s your turn.”, he says.
“What! No, there’s no way!”, you exclaim.
“Uh, uh, uh. You’re doing it.” He drags you into the store and randomly grabs three different pairs of jeans and heads towards the dressing room. “Wait here.” He points to a secluded corner as he goes inside the dressing room.
After several minutes, the door suddenly bursts open and Bryce makes a big scene. ”Ugh! What kind of jeans are these? None of them are leak-proof!” He says as he throws the jeans to the side and disappears in the racks, a few seconds later appearing by your side. You have to clamp your mouth shut after witnessing the attendant ‘s flustered and wide-eyed face.
After you both manage to escape from the shop without the woman noticing, you burst out in a fit of giggles. “Leak-proof?! That poor woman was astonished!”, you manage to blurt out in between laughter. You look up to see him smiling at you.
“What?”, you ask.
He gives you a devilish grin. “Now, it’s your turn.” Your eyes widen.
“No, no, no, no, no! There’s no way I’m embarrassing myself, that too on purpose! I have a reputation to uphold!” He looks at you. “Fine! Let me think!” You look around and spot an abandoned shopping cart, which triggers the memory of a prank Mark played before. A smirk fills your face as you say, “I have an idea. All I need is some clear beading wire.” He looks at you. “Don’t worry! I know what I’m doing!”
This time, you’re the one dragging him inside Michael’s and quickly pick out a strong wire. After paying for it, you turn to him. “Is there like a grocery store or something here?”
“I saw a Target on my way here. I think it was on the second floor.”, he says. You go down to the second floor and spot the Target.
“Okay, so are you going to tell me what your master plan is?”, he asks with a raised eyebrow. You pull him down and whisper in his ears. His eyes widen. “I didn’t think you had it in you.”
“Well, you should now by now that I’m full of surprises.”, you say as you enter the shop. After wondering around for a bit, you find the perfect place to execute your plan. You carefully set up the wire as Bryce goes to get a shopping cart.
“Did someone ask for a shopping cart?” You roll your eyes as he pushes the cart to you. “Shut up and help me with these wires.” After another 15 minutes of prep, you are finally ready to execute.
“Are you sure you want to do this?”, he asks.
“It was your idea. Plus, I’m not backing out now. Ready?” He nods as the both of you take your places. He mouths, “3...2...1!” You let out a high-pitched scream as the shopping cart rolls towards you. Attracting attention, you quickly run across the aisles as the shopping cart mysteriously follows you at quite a speed. People start shouting and screaming and you keep running and shrieking, Bryce nearby controlling the shopping cart with the wires. Everyone is freaking out, screaming and shouting, things on the shelves are completely scattered, the floor a huge mess until suddenly, you’re pulled back. Turning around, you see a security guard holding the wire, exposing you and Bryce. Shit!
A while later…
“So, I guess you being an actor and all didn’t help...that wasn’t a good idea was it?”, he says. You’re standing outside the mall you’ve been banned from for a month.
“No it wasn’t…”, you both burst out laughing. “I had an amazing time Bryce. Thank you.”
“Of course, you’re my sister from another mister.”, he makes you laugh for the millionth time as you both walk back to your apartment. By the time you reach home, it’s already 11.
“Just keep in mind that everything won’t always have a readymade solution. Sometimes you have to make your own path. Goodnight Elle.”
“Goodnight Bryce.”, you lightly kiss his cheek and head inside. After getting ready for bed, you slide into your sheets and let today’s events wash over you...when it hits you. “I know how to save Willow!” Hopping out of bed, you quickly grab a notepad and a pen. Propping open your MacBook, you start typing in a search query, knowing you have a long night ahead of you.
The next morning, you’re walking to the front desk to ask the whereabouts of Chief Emery.
“Hey Arielle! Need help with anything?”, you look to your right and see Danny walking towards you.
“Good morning Danny. Have you seen Chief Emery? I need to ask her about a treatment for a patient.”
“Umm...I think I saw her go into OR 6, but there isn’t any surgery though.” He shrugs and walks away. You shout a thank you and head to the sixth floor where all the scheduled surgeries are performed. The door is ajar as you near the OR, taking a peek inside, you see her hovering over the surgical tools, hands running over them as if she’s greeting an old friend. You wait for her to notice you until she turns around, your signature vanilla scent wafting in the air.
“Dr. Valentine. What can I do for you?”, she asks. You take a deep breath and launch into your prepared pitch for Willow’s treatment. After you’re done, your nervousness gets ahold of you leading to you biting your lip.
“So you’re telling me you want to exploit a fully funded government study for a patient’s treatment?”, she asks.
“It’s the only way for my patient to be able to afford her treatment. Edenbrook won’t be held of any charges.”, you reply thinking that as the chief, that’s what she’s worrying about.
“You sound like Dr. Ramsey.” You don’t know why, but your heart swells with pride.
“I take that as a compliment.”
She thinks it over, leaving you thinking that you blew it until, “Hand it here.” You can’t stop the smile blooming on your face as you hand her the papers. She signs them and gives them to you when your pager beeps.
“Excuse me.” You see that Willow’s being discharged. Crap! You quickly grab the papers and run back to the 1st floor all while shouting, “Thank you!” You swear that you hear her laugh.
By the time you burst into Willow’s room, you’re out of breath and the pair of twins look at you like you’re wearing an octopus as a hat. “Dr. Valentine? Is everything alright? Is something wrong with my sister?”, Rowan asks nervously. You look up to see Willow dressed and all her belongings packed as you catch your breath.
“You don’t have to leave! I found a way for you to receive your treatment!” You explain your findings and the government study. “So, it will cover all your medical expenses but both of you will have to agree.”
“Of course, I’d do anything for my sister. But, we both are still in college debt. I’ll just have to work a few extra shifts. Thank you so much, Dr. Valentine!”
You pull out the check you wrote yesterday night. “I want you to have this. It will help with your debts.” His eyes widen as he looks over the amount.
“I...I can’t possibly take this. It’s way too much”-
“No please, keep it. What’s the point of being rich if you don’t use it to help others?”, you say. Rowan hugs you.
“Thank you so so much for all your help Dr. Valentine. We’ll never forget this.”, Willow says.
“Of course.” You’re interrupted by a sharp knock at the door. Opening it, you find a doctor, but not one of Edenbrook’s.
“You must be Dr. Valentine. I'm the doctor you spoke with on the phone yesterday. There is some initial paperwork which has to be looked over and signed.
“Ah yes. You must be Dr. Martin. We’ll get started.”
After finishing up the paperwork, you head to the nurses’ station with a big smile on your lips. "What are you smiling about?" A familiar baritone voice from behind you grabs your attention. You turn around to find Ethan looking at you raising his brows.
"I found a way to help some people who deserve it. It's a really good feeling," your smile broadens.
"Well done, Rookie,", he shockingly offers you a rare smile before leaning closer. He rests one of his hands on your arm."And thanks for not telling anyone about… my patient." He sighs sadly as you study his features.
He doesn't seem happy or relieved but surely seems better rested. You sadly smile at him, "Of course...you’re not the only one who wants him to get better."
He nods at you understanding. His hand rests on your arm for one last moment after he squeezes your arm as a thank you, letting them fall to his sides.
You turn away as he requests for one of his patient charts from Marlene. You freeze seeing Dr. Emery standing across the hallway, looking at the two of you thoughtfully. You are brought back to reality by Ethan's voice, thanking the nurse and leaving. Harper looks at you one last time before walking towards the direction where Ethan went.
Ethan's P.O.V
You are forced to look up from Naveen's recent test results when you hear a knock.
"Come in," you say keeping your voice devoid of any friendliness, thinking it was some intern. “Or a certain intern with violet hair!”, your mind reminds you. The door opens, revealing Harper who waltzes in and takes a seat opposite to you.
“What can I do for the Chief of Medicine today?”, you ask.
“I just wanted to see how my friend was doing. Is that a crime?”, she asks.
You scoff, “I’ve known you for a long time Harper, and quite well enough to know when you want something.”
“I’ve been noticing you’ve been quite distant these past few weeks, you’re never found in your office, always somewhere around the hospital.”
“So she has been noticing your behaviour.”, you think. “I’m not distant. I’m just busy.”, you reply with a roll of your eyes.
Her voice softens, “Ethan, you know I’m still your friend. You can talk to me.”, she says.
“Not anymore, not when you’re the Chief of Medicine I can’t.”, you think. You blatantly lie, “I’m perfectly fine Harper. Now I’m sure you have much more important work to do.” With a sigh, she exits your office.
”I know she’ll discover this someday, but when she does...would everything be alright?”

[[ Greater Moonsea Map by cuiilv. From the creator via Candlekeep:
Just want to share a map that I have been working on for a few years. It started out as a map of the Moonsea, the Ride and most of Vaasa in the early 1380s DR, but slowly grew to cover more and more land, until it included all of Damara, Impiltur, the Vast, the Dalelands, Sembia, Cormyr and large portions of Anauroch and the Great Glacier as well, before I finally forced myself to stop.
The map itself is very much inspired by Mike Schley's works, but I have tried to make it different enough to not be mistaken for the original.
All locations have been taken from official sourcebooks, magazines, articles, adventures, games, novels, short stories, and directly from designer (mostly Ed Greenwood and George Krashos here at Candlekeep). So everything should be canon (depending a bit on how inclusive your definition of canon is).
Note: This awesome map is HUGE and VERY DETAILED. It’s also thoroughly researched by the creator. I’m saving a copy of all the references they used, for the unlikely chance that this information will disappear from Candlekeep. ]]
cuiilv:
Here is a list of references for 1869 of the 1872 names that appear in the map. They are listed exactly as they appear on the map, so Kingdom of Impiltur is found under K, not I. All alternative/historical names are listed in a separate category with ( ) around the name, exactly they way they appear in the map. The reference is a reference (in some rare cases two references), not necessarily the best one.

On June 14, Charli took to IG to announce her first fragrance arriving on June 26, captioning a pic of her showing off the bottle in a lilac-feathered tube top "born dreamer ★ 6.26."
“I’m so excited to finally share and celebrate Born Dreamer with the world!" she added in a press release. "Creating this fragrance has been such an exciting process, and I hope it makes everyone wearing it feel beautiful and special.”

Sten Hugo Hiller - 627184: Mountain Climbing Mecha Combat #1346
(By Sten Hugo Hiller - 627184)
Mountain Climbing Mecha Combat #1346
Brought to you by ANN
Highlighting the April 3364 Cruiserweight Chrono
The Gaming Authorities decided to let us try out one of the War Specialist formations this time, and decided the 70 ton formations were most in need of a run-through.
Many Commanders tend to focus mostly on the bigger Mechs and aim for success in the unlimited formats. Other Commanders work hard to improve at least some of the lighter formations, and some of them have built some really devasting formations.
As an example; David McCallum`s 70 ton formation is something few (me among them) want to tangle with despite having a serious licence advantage.
My 70 ton formation started as a collection of Krampus and Freon, backed up by a few Infernos, but over the years the odd Smilidon, Megazome, Spitfire, Tick, Fides and lately Talon have been added to the rooster.
Question was if they could measure up against the regulars on K3, as their licences were one to eight dozen higher than mine.
The best way to find out was to try, and after adding a half-dozen Novums as scouts we set out for the mountains.
As we were the first to arrive in formation, the top was ours for the asking. Probably a good thing, as every point counts in the Chronos.
The first few scorerounds the opposition was quiet, and we built up a decent advantage. But then solid hitters started to arrive, and more than once we had to fight hard to get back from the slopes and the foothills.
While many Commanders were strong enough to displace us, the hardest of them all was roward of the Northwind Dragons.
His licence is more than 50 higher than mine, and despite the fact that he spotted the rest of us a full line by having BFM`s in the front, he could claim the top more or less at will.
I managed to push him off the top from time to time, but that took on average a dozen or so tries, -and most of the time he punched right back and reclaimed the top within moments.
We had an advantage due to the early points we had scored, But even so, and despite mostly holding the top slope, roward was steadily gaining on us, and eventually he slipped past.
With ten to twelve scorerounds left, he had managed to outscore us by about 2500 points, and any sane commander should have given up.
But he had made a mistake, and forgotten to switch back from the main formation after doing some other tasks, so we pounced on him and reclaimed the top.
Admittedly, it was an empty gesture. For us to actually outscore him, others would have to pull him further down. And if he got back in formation and reclaimed the top it was all over.
But somehow he managed to miss the bus, and when the light finally flashed we had beaten him by a narrow margin.
According to the footage taken by my crew, the highest scorers had been:
Div 1 387+ (26 Commanders): Sherriff Leary Wretham, Warlocks HQ (+3570)
2: Fabio Favaro
3: Claude Poirier
4: Were Wolf
5: Bernard Johnson
6: Ben Rail
7: Jeff Haas
8: Yusuke Paul Okabayashi
9: Sal vezzosi Jr
10: Robert C Goetz Sr
Div 2 -386 (12 Commanders): Stroker Spot, Death Dealers (+34970)
Div 3 -284 (15 Commanders): Sten Hugo Hiller, Star League (+260)
Div 4 -207 (14 Commanders): Ken Fuchs, Northwind Dragons (+32620)
Div 5 -158 (24 Commanders): Grego, Black Star Bandits (+4910)
Div 6 -113 (17 Commanders): Jack Travis, T.I.o.M.T. (+13770)
Div 7 -85 (28 Commanders): Bill Harper, JC`s Rowdy Bunch (+4700)
Div 8 -56 (11 Commanders): Arabel Lane, Major Steel (+12900)
Div 9 -38 (17 Commanders): swa977, Ronins 2 (+19530)
Div 10 -25 (15 Commanders): Slick, Ronins 2 (+19320)
Div 11 -15 (14 Commanders): Will Bensley (+7620)
3+10(3S)+9(2S)+6(1S)+2+9(1S)+2+2S+0+0+0=Nine Silvers and thirty-four bronzes were awarded to Commanders who clearly had overweight Mechs in their formations as the event ended.
Total Contestants: 193
Total medals claimed: 156 (of 165 possible)
Compared to the previous (Orcus) event, the participation rose by fourty Commanders.
There was still some hefty imbalances between the tops, but the number of unclaimed medals was severly reduced.
In the end, a total of nine Bronzes from four tops were returned for resmelting.
The highest score achieved in this event was 155 000.
Only Ken Fuchs of the Northwind Dragons on K4 managed to stay on the top for the needed 124 scorerounds to claim that score.
The biggest gap to the runner up was on K2 where Stroker Spot from the Death Dealers won by 34 970.
Lowest score needed for a medal was on K8 where 3840 was enough to claim a Bronze.
Four Golds were decided by margins in excess of 16 000, but we also had two decided by less than 4000, one of them by as little as 260. That is extremely close when it comes to a long Chrono.
Question then is whether the rest of the prizes were secured by high or low margins?
Best way to find out is to look at the differences between the medal tiers in this event:
..Silver to Bronze....Bronze to nothing
Div 1 ......1940......…….....4045
Div 2 ....15520...…..............N/A
Div 3 ....22990...…..............N/A
Div 4 ....24040...…..............N/A
Div 5 ........700...…............4860
Div 6 ....22440...….........15000
Div 7 ....21740...…............2580
Div 8 ....14840...…..............N/A
Div 9 ....16950...….........18340
Div 10 ....4480...…..............N/A
Div 11 ....8820...…..............N/A
In general, the contested medals were won by solid to impressive margins this time. Only one Silver (and no Bronzes) were decided by a margin of less than 1000.
The only clan to claim multiple Golds in this even was Ronins 2. They could celebrate victory on K9 and K10.
We had one unaligned winner this time; Will Bensley on K11, while the sole repeat winner was Star League`s Sten Hugo Hiller on K3.
Upcoming event: Reverse Ratman
Here we have another tonnage limited event.
No Mechs heavier than 60 tons is allowed to participate in the fighting here.
In addition, on the eight highest tops the Namtar is supposed to shine, so each Commander is only allowed to field one non-Namtar Mech there.
Event ends October 15 between 1700 and 1730 New York Time
