I think people in this fandom need to understand the difference between ‘why the character does/is’ and ‘why you/the writer(s) want the character to do/be’, and also learn why they are both extremely and equally important questions when handling sensitive topics and more controversial flaws.

Because to even apply it to the series, we can explain a lot of character flaws by giving the backstories behind characters gaining them.

Even with Nana. She acts that way because she felt the need to stand out amongst her siblings. Jesson wrote her that way because Jess is a weeb. Very different, but both very important to address the character, and her writing.

Seeing people (person) change not only the given backstory, but even the reasons why she was written that way and go (paraphrasing) ‘it’s more cute if she’s white!’ Is very weird. Because even in Jesson’s intentions, she is Japanese… she is an anime stereotype, she was always intended to be read as Japanese by that association, it was never meant to be a criticism of weeb culture because she was written by a weeb.

They wanted this characterisation of Nana as some racist white girl because they thought it was ‘cute’… they refer to cultural appropriation as her being ‘kind of a jerk’. I don’t think more needs to be said. Because, yeah, a character being a cultural appropriator and having a storyline to unlearn that behaviour and work to undo that harm could be really interesting, but not when you’re doing it because it’s ‘cute’… and especially not when that character is canonically a part of that cultural background.

If anyone is considering a potentially sensitive storyline or anything for their own headcanons or rewrites, please consider why you want to do it, and the implications of that. Because if the answer is ‘it’s cute’… don’t do it.

Some of ppl's refusal (or inability) to write IDW OP isn't bc of annoyance or cowardice but just bc they like... don't know his personality? Yknow very "only read MTMTE syndrome" that's so common in this fandom.

Maybe it's bc I'm an IDW OP enjoyer/simp but I really don't get what's hard to write about his personality or why ppl feel the need to throw in continuity soup elements with him (while maintaining every other character in the fic meticulously and lovingly accurate to IDW lore). Like dudes IDW OP is already interesting even if you only need him as a side plot or character you just need to know how to write him.

But I guess people trying to write IDW OP and failing/writing an extremely watered down IDW OP is an improvement from not writing him at all and being annoying hating him in every single public space related (or not related) to Optimus, so it's meh
