Have you sorted Dumbledore before? He seems like a great candidate for this framework, especially with how divisive he is and with how much about him is open to interpretation. I really love your thoughts on this!
I think he's a Snake Bird, like Voldemort.
Albus has a pretty clear Bird secondary. He loves collecting (trinkets, artifacts, interesting memories.) His first step when fighting Voldemort is doing a big research deep-dive into his past. He loves a complex multi-step plan - the chain of events caused by the specific wording in his will is probably the clearest example of that. Voldemort once describes him as "omniscient" and that is the goal - Albus wants all the information, all the time. He also loves his Wacky!Dumbledore persona. It's fun, and it's great for throwing off suspicion. Very Actor Bird of him.
I do think his confrontation with Barty Junior at the end of Book 4 is interesting, because that's the most *pissed* and out-of-control we ever see him. There, the energy is very kick-down-the-door Lion secondary. Burst in with his guys at his back, stun him, physically kick him over, and give Barty Veritaserum so he tells you everything. (And then lose track of him in the aftermath, resulting in him getting Kissed.) I think a Snake secondary could have finessed that a little better. Maybe come at him a little softer, used Legilimency, gotten more info out of him, used him as a hostage... but Dumbledore is a Bird secondary who was missing a MASSIVE piece of information, he needed time to re-calibrate. Bird secondaries who have been very wrong-footed or are put in very unfamiliar situations often start looking like Lions.
In terms of Primary... I think he's a very, VERY Burned Snake who models "For the Greater Good" Bird because it doesn't feel safe to trust people (and 'people' does include himself.) Like he'll talk a good game, but when it comes down to it:
"What did I care if numbers of nameless and faceless people and creatures were slaughtered in the vague future, if in the here and now you [Harry] were alive, and well, and happy?"
The thing with Grindelwald hit him with the intensity of a Snake just really connecting with a Person for the very first time. Because like... young Albus just didn't have any connections like that. Elphias Doge worshiped him - which isn't an equal relationship. Ariana preferred Aberforth, his mother was entirely focused on Ariana, his dad was in prison. And Aberforth... is important, and I think Albus actually really did want and continues to want his "rough, unlettered, infinitely more admirable" brother's approval. But at that point, Aberforth thinks that Albus is a selfish, irresponsible jerk.
But then Grindelwald betrays Albus, which shatters him for a while. Grindelwald's running around Europe, Albus is hiding at Hogwarts because he's too Burnt to do anything else. He fundamentally does not trust himself anymore, he doesn't trust the instincts of his Snake primary. I'm not sure he ever does again, until maybe Harry. Albus thinks he's right about Snape, but he doesn't know, which is why he likes that visual check-in that Snape's Patronus provides. Albus starts modeling Bird primary, hard, because it hurts a lot less to live in that space.
But like he can't cut that Snake primary out of him completely. It's too core to who he is, he'll die. The Drink of Despair (and the Mirror of Erised) takes him right back to his People. He needs these connections, but those connections don't feel safe. Enter Hagrid, clearly very important to Albus - despite being not especially useful and often kind of a liability. But what he IS is someone very Aberforth coded... who will never leave or betray him. (Because Albus has just so much power over him.) I've written about Dumbledore's habit of collecting strays before, but I think it's a Burnt/Exploded Snake thing. He wants connection, but also sees connection as dangerous, so this is his (subconscious) solution.
Generally, when Albus does dumb things, it's for Snake reasons. Putting on the Resurrection Stone? Trying to talk down Draco when he should have just stunned him (and died Master of the Elder Wand?) In that moment Draco is one of his students (who he IS loyal to.) But he's also kind of Aberforth - totally outclassed, shouldn't be here at all, just trying to protect his family.
The house-matching helps explain why Dumbledore and Voldemort just... get under each other's skin to the extent that they do. They have a very emotionally charged relationship, considering that they prefer to keep each other at a distance and only interact through proxies. Albus has a deep distrust of Tom from the word go, even when Tom hasn't actually done much apart from be a creepy ten-year-old. (Tom probably reminded him of Grindelwald ngl. Or himself.) Albus has his collection of Voldemort's most important memories, and Voldemort is uniquely afraid of him. Diary!Tom frames the Basilisk vs Phoenix battle as a conflict between himself and *Dumbledore.* Like these two are wrapped up in each other, and I think it's because they're actually very alike.

Aurelius Dumbledore's mom? (My version)
Also a big middle finger to JKR.
Aurelius Dumbledore's biological mother.
Hesperia Abbott was the oldest daughter of Bernard Abbott and Lavinia Abbott (née Gamp). She grew up in Godric's Hollow, often befriending many fellow wizards and witches, despite her mum's stricter view on her “purity”.
She once met Aberforth Dumbledore, who had moved in with his older brother, Albus and his sister, Ariana and their mother, Kendra after Percival Dumbledore was imprisoned in Azkaban for attacking muggle boys. During the summer of 1899, she and Aberforth Dumbledore fell in love. There was much mental conflict she went through and the only person she confided in was her little sister, Nereida.
Despite Aberforth not having a great reputation only being “Albus Dumbledore’s” brother, Hesperia could truly see that man for a fun, goat-loving, kind-hearted gruffness that she adored so much. She found herself pregnant at the age of 17 and was terrified. To be fair, so was Aberforth. He didn’t expect a child to come into the picture, and that too so quickly. Lavinia Abbott noticed that her daughter was straying away from the family, and its values so she pulled Nereida aside and questioned her. She wanted to know why but Nereida wouldn’t “loosen her tongue” to put it.
Aberforth was shocked to receive a letter from Mrs Abbott stating that Hesperia was to be “sent away”, their baby to be taken an ocean far by Nereida, presumably to stay with a relative of sorts. Aberforth wasn’t there to hear the screams and wails of Hesperia as she was parted from her baby.
To regain control of the situation, Lavinia arranged for her daughter Hesperia to marry an excellent future son-in-law, Lucian Flint. Lucian had recently lost his wife, Balbina Crabbe, during childbirth, which resulted in the death of their stillborn child. Hesperia married Lucian in 1901, and together they had three children: two sons, Mederic (born in 1906) and Cyrus (born in 1909), and a daughter, Annalise (born in 1912). Through her son Mederic, Hesperia would become the great-grandmother of Marcus Flint, and through her daughter Annalise, she would also be the great-grandmother of Hestia and Flora Carrow.
Now, I do know that it is unknown what happened to her, but she may have died before 1926, as Mary Lou referred to her in the past tense. But, I don’t like that idea so a big middle finger. She eventually had to keep the memory of Aurelius close to herself, considering how the Flints would be a high-class society in the wizarding world. In 1901, Nereida boarded a ship headed for America with her nephew Aurelius, leaving her mother behind. During the voyage, the ship encountered a storm and began to sink. Unbeknownst to Nereida, a young Leta Lestrange had switched Aurelius with another baby in the crib. When Nereida went to the lifeboat, it capsized, and she drowned while diving underwater to rescue baby Corvus, whom she believed was her nephew. When Hesperia heard of this tragedy, she assumed her baby had drowned along with her sister and chose never to speak to her mother again.
Also, I want to write a scene where Hesperia, now a Flint enters the Hog’s Inn, (maybe the first wizarding war?) and meets Aberforth after almost 70 years. (I hate that it adds up to 69).

Forced into the fanfiction specific writing chair, what comes to mind?
That bloody Harry Potter evil Dumbledore and evil Voldemort fic idea I have. They’re both assholes, Dumbledore has been going wild with potions, spells and obliviations. The teachers at hogwarts are under a shit tonne of compulsions and potions and/or just like fucking sadists or worse, who abuse obliviations. Voldemort was a victim of Dumbledore yes, but he has become another player on the chessboard and reacted to Dumbledore by deciding to destroy him and everything and everyone else. No bashing of kids - all of them are just under a shit tonne of magical manipulations, I’ve never understood the whole evil eleven year olds trope with Hermione, Ron, or Ginny. Especially because the same writers criticise jkr doing the same thing with a lot of the slytherins. My favourite idea for this is that between twin telepathy (which no one knows they have) and accidentally producing some prank purging potions, the weasley twins realise something is fucked and along with idk Warrington (some slytherin of the right age who is immune to obliviations due a secret genetic quirk/and or experimentation performed by family members on him) have to work out wtf they can do about this (maybe better than just survive and actually help others). I might add some really dark stuff (torture, sa) and Dumbledore has also manipulated previous generations and continues to manipulate them - leading to a lot of abusive parents, both those who would have been otherwise and more….
Maybe have some corner of hogwarts which is set up for human and creature experimentation as well.
I never find any fics like this bc either Dumbledore is a manipulator who means well, is morally grey or he’s evil but Voldemort is good and Ron and Hermione are also evil.
And yes I am aware this is not canon, I just think it’s a fun au. I haven’t got as far as logic for Dumbledore’s actions, but like I feel like it would be fun to have a subplot of various chars discovering their actual sexuality and gender rather than what dumbs imposed on them.
And oooo maybe aberforth could have tried to oppose him as a kid and dumbledore responded by putting him under a shit tonne of stuff, keeping him nearby to taunt him and putting him in his worst nightmare of a job.

Was Imogen ever involved in accidental or deliberate tomfoolery at school?
OH, SO MUCH TOMFOOLERY.
Shall we talk about the time she got into a duel on her first day at Hogwarts? And then cheated in said duel twice?
Or when she got back at Snape for all her T grades by starting a rumor so convincing that years later kids were still saying he was a vampire? Or when she purposely got detention with him to ask incriminating questions about her father without risk of anyone overhearing?
How about all the times she snuck into the Restricted Section? Or snuck out of the castle?
Or maybe her tendency to sass professors in her essays? The "Days Since Last Pun" poster she installed in the Ravenclaw common room to track Flitwick's bad jokes? The weeks she spent determining the best way to derail History of Magic class? (Using modern sources and interpretations to argue with his dated lectures proved most effective. Magically pushing the wall several feet forward until it passed through him proved most entertaining.)
Then there's the time she messed up an experimental spell and couldn't get her wand to stop spouting water for a full day, so she pretended Moaning Myrtle was haunting her dorm room and led the entire Ravenclaw House on a wild goose chase trying to banish Myrtle from the tower?
Or the time she convinced Dumbledore to let her skip school to hang out in the Hog's Head all day? (She wanted to surprise Aberforth for his birthday by giving him a day off work, so that tomfoolery was at least wholesome.)
So, yes, not only was Imogen involved in Hogwarts Tomfoolery, she was the reigning champion of Hogwarts Tomfoolery until the Weasley twins arrived to knock her off her throne.
And I haven't even touched on all the flat-out criminal activity she got up to during her school career. She taught herself blood magic out of her father's old books and invented illegal spells for fun. There was a lot of it.

i did have a bit of fun trying to figure out genderbend names for the Dumbledores. theyve got this colour theme AND theyve got all A's:
Albus (white)
Aberforth (it means "from the river" but someone figured a river near a? town important to JKR?? is basically called black river??? yeah this ones a bit of a reach but considering the others...)
Ariana (silver)
Aurelius (gold)
so after some uh scuffed googling i eventually i ended up with:
Clara (clear)
Ciara (dark)
Cecil (blind)
Calypso (conceal)

I do think it is cool, in a story kind of way, if the Elder Wand has a slightly different mechanism for choosing it's master than your typical wand. (also yeah, the wand lore stuff in Book 7 is a mess, the movies try to explain it/make it clearer but kind of don't, and... the mechanics of wand lore is not especially what I want Harry and Voldemort talking about during their big confrontation.)
But I also like finding alternate ways of making it work, and here's mine. I do think it's interesting if the Elder wand goes to whoever is the most powerful person in a conflict, because "power" can be an interesting, nebulous thing, and that can get into, idk, themes and stuff. My very first HP meta was a kind of Grindeldore thing, where the wand's power shifted to Dumbledore because he was the one willing to imprison the man he loved for the rest of his life... and Grindelwald wasn't. I also think this is fun to examine when it comes to Dumbledore's extended, planned, suicide-by-Snape. If that had worked, then I think Dumbledore would have broken the power of the wand: if his murder was actually just an extension of his own power, he would have died uncontested, and I think that was the plan.
The transfer over to Draco is by far the messiest, I am not even a little surprised that there are a ton of theories about how he was never the master. I don't mind that: I think it's funny if both Dumbledore and Voldemort were blindsided by... underestimating Draco Malfoy. Also I think it's funny that Draco realizes he was the master of the most powerful wand... immediately after he isn't anymore.
Which gets into my own headcannony interpretation of the duel on the tower, which almost certainly isn't intended by the text, but which *is* fun to think about. See, I think it's kinda cool that Dumbledore dies in a three-way duel, just like the one that killed Ariana which he was never quite able to process. I do think Dumbledore puts Harry and Ariana in the same category - the innocent he has to protect but possibly sacrifice. And if that's the case... then Draco becomes Aberforth - just here to protect his family but completely out of his depth and kind of a liability, and Severus is Grindelwald - dark, brilliant, and one of the closest relationships Dumbledore has. I think there's a lot going on in his head at that moment, and it would be cool if it (unintentionally) bled into how the Elder Wand perceives the situation.
So when Draco disarms him (when Dumbledore lets Draco disarm him...) there's a lot going on with Dumbledore's angst about not being able to protect innocents, about Aberforth really never forgiving him, about if how Draco will just agree to be saved that will mean something. So maybe in a weird way Draco does have power over him, in that instant, in that moment.
And then Malfoy Manor is easy. Even though Harry physically took Draco's wands from him, and didn't magically disarm him - Draco is lost, conflicted, and seems to want Harry to win. (I mean Harry defeats Voldemort with Draco's "friendly" wand, and unicorn cores are loyal, I don't think he could have done that if Draco hadn't wanted him to win.) Harry is clearly more powerful. Same thing with his confrontation in the woods - Voldemort is scared, of Harry, of death, of all sorts of things while Harry is at peace, surrounded by his loved ones, not scared of Voldemort even slightly. So the wand perceives him as more powerful.
(and I have no idea what was going on with Grindelwald and Gregorovitch. Grindelwald/Dumbledore/Gregorovitch love triangle??? :D)
How the Elder Wand Choses its Master
So, this is a short theory, but it is an interesting one and I kinda wanna make note of it anyways. And that is:
I don't think the Elder Wand allegiance works the way we're told.
To clarify, I don't think the Elder Wand passes to whoever defeats its master. I have a few reasons to think that, and I'll cover them here.
Firstly, it doesn't make sense. Like, the legend of the Elder Wand is that it's udefeatable. An unbeatable wand whose wielder can never lose. Except, the wielder does lose, and often. It's how the ownership supposedly transfers from one master to another. We're told Dumbledore won the Elder Wand when he defeated Grindlewald in a duel. We see Draco win its allegiance when he disarms Dumbledore.
It just doesn't make sense for both legends to exist simultaneously. How can an unbeatable wand be won in a duel? The whole point is that it's impossible to win against it.
Secondly, its allegiance clearly doesn't work the way the legend says it does. So, if we look at the ending of the books, as an example, Dumbledore was the master of the Elder Wand, and then Draco disarmed him, becoming the master. Harry disarmed Draco from a different wand and became the master like that. Then Voldemort kills Harry in the forest, but Harry is still the master of the Elder Wand?
I mean, Voldemort killed Snape to become the master of the Elder Wand (when he thought Snape was the master), but when he killed Harry, it didn't help him. So killing Snape was useless?
Like, we outright see that defeating the master doesn't make you the master when Voldemort kills Harry.
(And if it was because Harry threw the fight, then Draco shouldn't have become the master after Dumbledore because Dumbledore didn't fight Draco by choice)
So what does? How does the allegiance change?
Well, Ollivanders tells us exactly how: "the wand chooses the wizard"
This is just as true for the Elder Wand as any other wand.
What I think the Elder Wand does is that it chooses its wizard. Essentially, in a duel where one wizard has the Elder Wand, the Elder Wand chooses its preferred owner and then chooses who wins. If it wants its current master to win, it's unbeatable. If the wand decides it wants the opponent, though, it chooses who it wants to madter it and throws the fights it's in.
It's why Dumbledore defeated Grindlewald and won its allegiance — the Wand chose Dumbledore.
It's why killing Harry in the forest didn't make Voldemort the master of the Elder Wand — the Wand already chose Harry, so Voldemort was never it's master. It's possible Draco was never the Elder Wand's master either and that it was Harry since the moment Dumbledore died, we can't tell for sure.
So that's it, kind of a short theory, but one I find interesting nonetheless.

Where do you see Karl Urban fit in?
Tumblr media
wow, what a fun face claim idea! canon-wise, carl urban could definitely work for bill weasley, charlie weasley, oliver wood, viktor krum, and marcus flint! i would also love to see him as a moody, greyback, mcgonagall (descended from malcolm or robert), dumbledore (descended from aberforth), fortescue, slughorn, dolohov, rookwood, rosier, mulciber, avery, diggory (amos could've adopted a child after cedric's death), bones, and hagrid (a relative of rubeus, maybe). hope that helps! in general, i think he has a real erinyes vibe and would serve as a great mentor for the faction in my opinion! hope that helps!

His reputation upon Harry entering the school, at least with the older kids, was 'a bit mad/barmy'. The sort of guy people like - but people like Hagrid vehemently defend whenever he says something being said against him. Because things are said against him. Just not very loud, because nothing is happening. He's just a silly quiet headmaster.
He IS the headmaster of an important school... But the Board of Governors outrank him - and the Minister of Magic outranks them. Being Headmaster is a title can be stripped from him. And is - once by the Minister, once by Lucius Malfoy.
Chief Warlock is a chairman position. As in specifically NOT a position of power. It is a neutral position. He makes sure everyone gets a fair amount of time to talk. he introduces topics. He keeps everything on schedule. His vote is not counted unless it would sway the result.
IDK what happens in Magical Beasts - but Newt is an adult, yeah? And he fought in World War 1...? Sounds like a warrior to me.
"Let's go further with each and every person in the Order of the Phoenix. Dumbledore thaught every one of them in school. Most of the members in the first wizarding war joining that organisation straight out of school" That's not true at all. Indeed, lets go through the members:
Unknown age: C. Dearborn - Missing. B. Fenwick - 'bits of him' were discovered. D. Meadowes - Personally killed by Voldemort, might mean he is a skilled adult. M. McKinnon - Killed 'with her whole family' - suggests a large family. E. Vance - 'stately looking with a green shawl' Graduated straight into the Order: S. Black, R. Lupin, P. Pettigrew, J.+ L. Potter - all class of 78. S. Snape - class of 78 but joined later. Established Adults: E. Bones - Murdered w. wife + kids. Brother of the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, Amelia Bones. M. Fletcher - already a con man well integrated in the crime world. A.+ F. Longbottom - They would have been OLDER than the Potters as they were 'Prominent Aurors'. Auror training takes years to complete, let alone gathering FAME from it. Moody knew them and liked them. A. Moody - Legendary Auror. Retired after the war. S. Podmore - Born 1956/1957, apparently…? G.+ F. Prewitt - Molly Weasley's brothers, probably born 1945 - 1955. E. Doge - Albus' schoolmate, Born 1881 Ab. Dumbledore - Born 1883. A. Figg - old Squib. R. Hagrid - Born 1928.
It seems the only people who were recruited from school are from the ONE YEAR and the ONE FRIEND GROUP. If Albus wanted to groom child soldiers he is doing a bad job. Where are the kids from '77? '76? '75? What about '79? '80? Where are kids from Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw? There are 5 people that don't have any clues for their age. They could be 20... or 40... or 60... or 100... Everyone else? An adult. Adults before the Order even existed. Adults even before the war started. Did Dumbledore teach them all? Yes, most likely - apart from Figg, Doge and Aberforth... ...and the class of 78. He was Headmaster by that point. The headmaster does not hang out with students. He barely even spends any time with Harry - he talks to him like a couple of times a year - and Harry is the prophecy child...! Albus is not hanging out with Peter Pettigrew and Sirius Black, influencing them personally. He just isn't. As for everyone else: The Order didn't even exist when he taught them. How can he groom them for something that doesn't exist?
Fun fact Wizards can live a longer time than you might think! A. Dippet, the Headmaster before Dumbledore, died at 355. The trolley witch on the Hogwarts Express was born b. 1830. That's just a fun fact. :)
you know what. i bet dippet wasn't the only person dumbledore lobbied against giving riddle a job. and dumbledore is hugely influential and well connected. no wonder tom couldn't get anything other than a position at borgin and burkes.

Uuuuuh, kisses! Honestly, I think Bunty is a lot more comfortable with physical affection that Aberforth is. He seems the type of guy that may seek it, but doesn't really know how to express that need? Like, in the movie, when Aberforth is alone with Bunty and the qilin, he tries to clean its snout from the milk it was eating (I think it was milk?), but gives up when the others come in. And the gesture is hesitant, like from someone who's not used to these things. (PART ONE)
(The rest of this post is from the same anon. My thoughts will be directly separated at the end).
And I think it would be the same for a kiss. Like, Aberforth spends a lot of time by himself. He tends to his goats and to his pub alone. So when someone like Bunty come into his life I can see him being gruff and curt at first. Then enjoyng Bunty's company while he's working. Aberforth seems the type of guy that doesn't talk much, so it would be up to Bunty to fill the silence with her voice. And he would be all for these moments, cause he can see Bunty is a genuine person.
Aberforth can be pretty judgemental and closed minded (I think it's a defense mechanism to avoid getting attached to other people and get hurt) so knowing a honest and hardworking person like Bunty would be a pleasant surprise for him at first. Like, I think Aberforth would think: this woman can't be real, she must hide something. And wait to see if his prejudice will manifest in her or not. And of course it doesn't. And of course he's smitten with this little lady that talks and talks.
And now that Aberforth starts to feel something something in his chest for Bunty, I think he would act just like with the qilin: with small little gestures and a lot hesitation sprinkled in them. I think Bunty would find it endearing... Especially since his eyes express the feelings he's hiding from her and she's noticed it. And she loves those blue eyes that are piercing and intense, and that are showing a degree of vulnerability that its calling to her.
So, one day, it's late at night, pub's empty, and Bunty is sitting across from Aberforth, talking about a fantastic beast she and Newt found. And Aberforth is trying really hard to listen to her, but his eyes keep falling back on her lips. And the impulse to kiss them is getting stronger, and Bunty eyes are so bright and her smile is so sweet and Aberforth closes the distance between them, kissing her softly, wondering if that's ok. But then Bunty pulls him for another kiss and yeah...
Aberforth watching Bunty’s lips when she talks 😩 I’m SICK! Exactly! Wow! I LIVE for this HC! From your breakdown and your reasonings behind everything, to how it concludes. I don’t think I’ll be able to think about anything else for a while. Aberforth not being able to stop himself from glancing and focusing on her mouth and impulsively kissing her 😌. Yeah, I love this and need it now.

To Aberforth: On a scale of 1 to 10 how tempting is it to throw Gellert out of a window, hypothetically speaking-
Not sure if Aberforth knows what "hypothetically" means 😸

did Abelforth know about GGAD? (just a random thought rly)
In a lot of GGAD fanfics of the summer 1899, Aberforth knows about the true nature of Albus’ and Gellert’s relationship - it’s usually an interesting theme
But in reality, he certainly never knew, right?
I mean, Aberforth said in DH Gellert and Albus were “best friends”, our two boys were probably hiding somewhere everytime they were together - to plan a new world order and snog without someone nearby -, we might suppose the society was a bit homophobic...
So their relationship was most likely a secret (even if we can wonder about what Bathilda saw/heard/understood)
Or maybe the old Aberforth wanted to keep unspoild the private life of his brother, despite the fact he talked about all of Albus’ awful flaws - but we could ask ourselves if falling in love - so not just be friend - with someone who wants to rule the world isn’t a “flaw”? And consequently, why Aberforth didn’t tell to the Golden Trio? idk (ok I don’t bloody know if it’s clear)
(if Dumbledore wanted to keep his former relationship with Grindelwald secrete, why he dropped the “closer than brothers” line also? fortunately, Travers and Theseus are a bit oblivious (or Albus said it because he knew they were not going to understand and it was funny?))
Tumblr media
(this is the face of a man who drops huge revelations all the time but is amused because everyone miss them)
(sorry for the mistakes and shitpost, i wrote this quickly and it’s almost 4AM now so (ok this is not an excuse), i hope it’s understandable though)

Tell us a story where nothing horrible happens and nobody gets injured or killed for a change.
Okay.
One time I knocked out half of a wall in the Hog’s Head and didn’t get immediately kicked out and banned by @theotherdumbledore
So, I don’t actually recall why I’d decided to stay at one of the rooms at the Hog’s Head rather than just, you know, go home but I did.
As is fairly usual, I didn’t so much sleep as I ended up sitting in the room and doing a bit of practice with a Venari chained to an Excidium, just sort of having it chase some random little object I’d enchanted to circle the room.
Thing is, even with a Venari on it, Excidium is still hard to control and you sort of have to force it to keep itself attached to the Venari; good mental exercise if nothing else.
And, at some point I nicked a wall.
Now, the thing with Excidium is, if it touches something, whatever it touches just straight up explodes and if what it touches isn’t a living thing it’ll just keep chewing its way through whatever it is until something stops the spell.
Something generally being either a living thing, at which point it self-extinguishes, or the caster either stopping it manually or dying.
I stopped it within two seconds of it hitting but, again, a lot of noise especially for two in the morning.
So, at that point, I figure there is absolutely no way I am not getting dragged out of the place by my ear and banned because people get banned from the Hog’s Head for a LOT less than blasting a wall out with a particularly nasty curse.
Knock on the door and, to nobody’s surprise, it's  @theotherdumbledore and he didn’t look particularly cross but I figured that was likely because he had no idea what had happened and it was two in the morning.
All he says was, “I heard your…noise.”
At that point, I could have just gone with some explanation that would have been infinitely more reasonable than, “Oh yeah I was playing with Excidium on a Venari and nicked the wall, sorry about that.”
I did not.
I told him exactly that. Do you ever just say something and internally cringe as you’re saying it because you just know it’s not even remotely close to what you should have said?
Happens to me all the time.
Anyway, by then I was certain I was getting thrown out because, again, that would be a perfectly reasonable response.
Except that’s not what happened.
He just stepped into the room, shut the door, and started clearing debris while asking me where I’d learned that spell and how to get the Venari attached to it around a bit of an, “also, you should probably be helping me clean this mess up” sort of statement.
Got the wall patched up as well as you ever can with Excidium, so it’s probably still got some visible cracks in it unless something got hung over them.
I rattle off a bit about my job, the sorts of things I study–obscure magic, experimental magic, magical theory, spell modification and circling back to what I was doing with the Venari/Excidium combination–still fully expecting to be kicked out of the place at any given moment. Except, at that point, I noticed he’d sat down at some point and and was smiling at the floor while telling me I was not, in fact, talking too much.
What?
What you have to understand here is that, over the past 15-ish years, in all the times I’d ever been to the Hog’s Head, I’ve only ever really seen two expressions and you never really wanted to look at him for too long because, well, you might get thrown out if it came off like you were staring:
1) Annoyed.2) Annoyed, but slightly less so.
This is someone I have never once seen even crack the slightest hint of a smile and he’s sitting there nearly grinning at the floor after I kind of wrecked a room at his place of business.
No idea what’s happening at all at this point, and he started going over what I was doing with a passing mention that he had a not insignificant interest in pretty much everything I’d just said and tells me he knows a nice, wide open space with nobody around for miles if I’d like to go there and resume what I was working on.
Yes.
The answer to that sort of proposition is always yes.
So, tell him yes, hold an arm out and tell him not to rip it off during the trip and he sits there looking like I suddenly sprouted maybe four extra heads and stopped speaking English.
C'mon mate, we should’ve been out of this busted up room at least five minutes ago, quit staring and let’s go!
Turn up again in a massive field with a house that looked like it’d been abandoned for at least a good fifty years or so; completely falling apart. I start flattening the grass and cast a few charms to scatter any wildlife as I never like accidentally hitting something living with Excidium and he says, “I think we still have our old bludger in the barn” and something else about the place being practically his and that didn’t really click, the wording I mean.
He goes and grabs an entire damn Quidditch set; old one at that. You really want to have an Excidium chase and probably destroy that? Says he’s not much of a Quidditch fan so it doesn’t matter.Okay. Admittedly, bludgers are pretty good targets to work with for getting anything with a Venari attached a good run to test its accuracy; same with a Snitch.
Still dark at this point; probably around three in the morning. Excidium burns pretty bright and it’s kind of impressive to watch in the dark. It also changes colour depending on its proximity to something living. When it’s not particularly close to something alive, it’s yellow; as it gets closer to something living it turns to orange, and eventually to red when it’s almost close enough to hit so, definitely something that’s more fun to mess with in the dark and if it’s trailing a bludger it should be able to stay close enough to keep it lit so it doesn’t smack one of us in the face.
Says we can crash in the house when we’re done messing about with the Excidium.
Blew up ¾ of a Quidditch set over the course of a few hours. It didn’t take that long for them to get hit, they spell chain was set up to just chase it but never quite catch it mostly because I wanted to see how long I could keep doing that before it either got boring or tiring. It was probably close to 8 in the morning by that time.
The Snitch was more interesting to watch, mostly because its movement is more erratic and it tries to avoid people. The bludgers were more, “Yeah, and I’m taking you out with me, buddy!”
It is very possible to hold a complete discussion about the irrationalities of Quidditch scoring and magical theory while dodging bludgers that are being followed by a curse that has a very real possibility of slipping from its path and knocking you out of existence, if you were curious.
(( This story probably now makes Calleo owe @lamentedhope infinity +1 bottles of brandy. ))
