Sad news. Geoff Palmer certainly sounds like someone who is worth remembering.
Tumblr media
Geoff Palmer, Scotland's first Black Professor, has passed away at the age of 85. Born in Jamaica, he moved with his mother to England in 1948 as part of the Windrush generation before studying botany at the University of Leicester.
After initially struggling to find post-graduate work, he was accepted to do a PhD in grain science and technology at the University of Edinburgh.
He was a strong advocate for human rights and racial equality, and his campaigning and thoughts helped a young me better understand Scotland's role in the Empire.

June 20th is a special day for me. When I was 23, I was lucky enough to be able to pack all my belongings and my cat inside a friend's car, and I moved to Washington state. It was also the day I met my partner @mercurialmalcontent (❤️) and some of my dearest friends in person for the first time.
It's a day I'm very grateful for, especially all this time later. No matter what's going on that year, I still marvel that something so marvelously life-changing and wonderful happened to me at all.
I'd never been on a road trip before. I'd never lived on my own before.
They saved my life.
One of the friends I met that day passed away recently.
Jesse was kind and hilarious and a brilliant writer. I'm indescribably lucky to have met him.
I don't have the words to describe how much I miss him.

I don't know if people knew this but I found out that Tony Todd basically gave a fair well speech. It's not scripted this was all Tony before he past away. The Director let Tony add lib that scene minus the part that was scripted about the grandmother saved him then afterward started to go off scripted. Which find amazing and it made me get emotional along with other people in the theater watching. You'll always be the best Candyman, Tony Todd. {I was grateful it wasn't just me}

"We were just like, what do you want to say that this has all been about? And so those lines that [Tony] has about 'life is precious and you need to enjoy every single second because you never know when,' he just kind of said that from the heart. You can kind of see in his eyes that he's speaking right through the camera and to the audience. And I think it was even more impactful to us in the room because he was living by those words. It wasn't just like something he said 'cause he thought it'd be good in a movie. That whole day was very special because his mortality was present in the room. He was cherishing every second and he was loving it and he was so happy to be there. So, he kind of communicated the message he was living, and it was such a special moment that we're all really grateful to be able to capture." — Zach Lipovsky

This goes out
. to a very special little guy, who we had to put down today because he had blood cancer, and there is no cure for that...It wasn't an easy decision to make, but it was also an oddly easy one to make. As much as I did not want to do it, and it hurt like hell, still does, and probably will for a while, he was already in a lot of pain...and thinner than he should have been, and I did not want to suffer--or to get to the point where everything he did was unbearable for him. I know I don't have to explain myself...It was cancer, and a horrible cancer at that; it was killing him, but I want to say it anyway. My kitty, What's-His-Face, was not perfect, but who really is? He'd poop outside the litter box, never inside, he'd throw-up hairballs left and right, and eat plastic when he shouldn't, but even with those flaws--he was still the best boy. He was sweet, and kind, and affectionate, and social--he never threw fits, he was easy to bathe, and was so, so good when he had vet appointments. We could shave him every summer when it was too hot for all his fur, and he'd just let us. He enjoyed being brushed and adored catnip and squeezy treats. His eyes were like an owl's, all through his life. He always had a vacant but lovable stare on his face. He was tolerant of so much, right to the very *end* and I am going to miss him with everything I have...My owl-faced, sweet, fluffy, little old guy. RIP, my fuzzy, BEST boy.

I don't know how many of my followers are furries but we just lost one of ours.
He died because the medical industry in the US refused to help. He was murdered in a million little ways, with a million automated systems.
He was on bluesky no more than five hours ago, now he's gone.
Dragoneer ran FurAffinity, which is more or less the furry art site. It looks like its' from the early aughts, has no native pdf support, and has zero discoverability or algorithmic function. It's home to me, it's always been home.
No matter how often I moved or how often my life radically changed, there was FA. I met my husband on the forums. Through the majority of its' life, Dragoneer kept it running. He never sold us out, never tried to keep up with trends. It's a community.
And there is something bitter about losing someone who was key to keeping one of the relics of the internet before corporations took over.
We have our home, but it's lost its' keeper.
Good night, Neer. You kept the lights on.
