June 20th is a special day for me. When I was 23, I was lucky enough to be able to pack all my belongings and my cat inside a friend's car, and I moved to Washington state. It was also the day I met my partner @mercurialmalcontent (❤️) and some of my dearest friends in person for the first time.
It's a day I'm very grateful for, especially all this time later. No matter what's going on that year, I still marvel that something so marvelously life-changing and wonderful happened to me at all.
I'd never been on a road trip before. I'd never lived on my own before.
They saved my life.
One of the friends I met that day passed away recently.
Jesse was kind and hilarious and a brilliant writer. I'm indescribably lucky to have met him.
I don't have the words to describe how much I miss him.

years ago, back when i was newly adopted, i had the morbid thought that it's a good thing my parents are tumblr ~famous, because even if something happened to them, id still sometimes see their posts in the wild for as long as tumblr was still around. i just didn't think there'd be any need for it nearly this soon.
if you see a post with @jumpingjacktrash in the reblog chain, please consider helping it keep circulate so it might find its way back to my dashboard again.

Stuck? Try junebugging.
I don't know who needs to hear this, but we're 5 days into nanowrimo so maybe this will be helpful.
Do you want the safety and surety of knowing what happens next in your story but can't stick to an outline? Does knowing in advance what will happen suck the joy out of discovery writing? Do you try to wing it through plots but get tangled in plot holes or have a story that runs out of steam because you can't figure out what went wrong? Are you at your most creative when you have a little bit of guidance? Do you tend to under-write? Do you get ideas in your head for random scenes and snippets that drop from the sky without context?
If any of these apply to you, junebugging a draft might be for you!
What Is Junebugging?
Since you're on Tumblr, you might already be familiar with the concept of junebugging as it relates to cleaning. If not -- I think the idea was first introduced to me by @jumpingjacktrash.
The basic idea is that you tackle cleaning by way of controlled chaos. You pick a specific area you want to focus on, like your kitchen sink, and then wander off to deal with other things as they occur to you, but always returning back to that area. You end up cleaning a little bit at a time in an order that may not make sense to an outsider but which keeps you from getting overwhelmed and discouraged.
How Does Junebugging Work in Writing?
OK, so that's great, but how does this work with writing? Well. In my case, the general idea is to jump between writing linearly, outlining, and writing out of order. It usually looks something like:
Start free-writing a scene, feeling my way through it and enjoying the discovery process.
Thinking, ok, now I have this scene, did anything need to happen to lead up to it? Do I need to go back and add some foreshadowing? Does this scene set anything up that needs to be paid off? And then jump forward/back to make those adjustments.
I'll usually have a bunch of disconnected ideas of ideas that have popped into my head, so I'll write those down in a list somewhere and then try to figure out what goes in between them and what order it goes in.
I'll write what I call "micro-scenes" which is where I'll just sketch out a few essential elements of what's going on without worrying too much about details, description, etc. -- just he did this, she said that, the setting was this, real bare-bones script. Then I can come back through and flesh out each of those microscenes into an actual scene later.
Got a story that has a complex structure? No problem. Write through each storyline one at a time and then chop them up and weave them together afterward. Write all the B plot scenes first then come back through to do A plot and C plot. Move the pieces around like legos. No one ever has to know.
This method works for me because I can't "decide" story elements in advance. I have never been able to just sit down and "figure out" what happens in a story beyond a couple steps ahead -- I have to discovery-write my way forward. But at the same time, that gets really daunting. So I zoom forward with micro-scenes, roughing out the beats in the most bare-bones way possible, then when I run out of clear vision for what happens next I backtrack, flesh out those scenes, build in connective tissue, etc. and by then I will probably find more inspiration to jump forward.
It's basically folding drafting, outlining, and revising all together into a single phase of writing, which is chaotic and goes against everything people teach you, but if it works? then it fuckin works.
Anyway, sorry for the jumbled-up post, I'm dashing this off quickly while I heat up a pizza and I'm about to dive back into my WIP -- but I hope this was a little helpful. If nothing else, take this as my blanket permission that it's 100% OK to jump around, write out of order, write messy, outline sometimes, pants sometimes, and do whatever else it takes just to get through the story. You've got this. Good luck.

29. Favourite fanfiction(s) of your ship(s)?
you may not know this already, but i have a recs tag where i post exactly this in depth! but i LOVE to boost my favorite fics, so ill do it all again, just for you anon <3 if you want more recs for any of these ships, i promise there are TONS in that tag, (or you can send me another ask for something more specific,) but ill stick to just my absolute top reads in this post
my favorite fanfictions of my favorite (homestuck) ships
starting under the cut bc it got long slkdjnfsjdfn
for halquius, the funniest hs ship-
Second Chances by @mtjester
Lil Hal never said anything about what it meant to be the AI avatar of the God of Heart. After he and Equius had split, everyone had assumed he would go back to Dirk and serve as a sort of spirit companion, the hyper-perceptive Shades of the God of Heart. But to that, he had simply responded, “Nah.” He stayed firmly on Equius’s face, and Equius asked him no questions about it.
this fic is so in character. it captures some of my favorite things about this ship, like how obnoxious they are and the very specific ways they click and enable each other. it also has an absolutely fantastic sequel! its short and funny, and always the first rec i drop for this specific ship.
(the second rec i would drop is my own fic, Hold Me (Accountable). its a space au with mechanic!equius and bounty hunter!AR, and i maintain that its hilarious and a must read if you like this ship at all.)
my resident favorite ship, eridave-
Lee Shore by @jumpingjacktrash
“I asked Egbert to ask you if you have Ampora’s new contact information.” “No, man, I didn’t even know the old info was old. How can you not have a contact for him? It’s not like he changed his chumhandle, email, and phone number all at once.” “As a matter of fact, that is apparently exactly what he did. And deleted his Facebook and his photo blog.” “Dramariffic.” In the years after the game, the twelve trolls and eight humans have tried to stick together, because no one else would understand. When Eridan misses one of their yearly reunions, Dave makes an impulsive decision to go find him.
ive said it before, and ill say it again. this is THE eridave fic. this is the one. if you only ever read one (and its not one of mine), it should be this one. i love how dave takes eridan seriously without enabling him, and how easily they both cut through each others bullshit. the handling of eridans character is DELICIOUS, and i literally think about his relationships with the other trolls in this fic all the time. i dont even know how many times ive read this fic but it goes so hard.

In Which a Mutant and an Alien Meander Towards a Quadrant of Indeterminate Identity at a Glacial Pace While Examining the Internalized Toxicity Perpetuated by Their Respective Societies, and The Nature of Friendship is Determined to Be More Universal Than Originally Theorized [Banned In Alternia]
this is the quintessential meteor fic. its everything you could ever want in a meteorfic, and deals very heavily with karkat and dave unpacking toxic cultural ideas from their respective planets and coming to a new understanding of who they want to be together. its long, its slowburn, its everything, and the authors put SO much obvious effort and research into getting the voices just right, i still think about and admire it years and years later.
The Eurydice Suite, v2.0 by @callmearcturus
Dream-sharing: a highly illegal little industry in which agents delve into people’s dreams, and unearth their deepest secrets and memories. Within this business, the Strider-Lalondes are known as the best there is — until Dirk Strider gets his fool-ass trapped within the confines of his own subconscious, with his Auto-Responder playing malicious prison warden. To save him, the best and brightest dreamers in the world will have to form a team. Backed by the token rich friend, lead by the surliest extractor ever bribed out of retirement, haunted by the shade of the latest, greatest agent in the biz, and on the run through a dangerous tiered dream in a hostile mind… It’s going to take a miracle to pull this one off.
arc doesnt need any publicity from me, bigname that they are, but i gotta say of all of their fics this one is one i still come back to and reread from time to time all these years later. the au is really cool, and the drama is potent. karkat and dave have a very loaded and complicated, vaguely antagonistic relationship that takes time to get resolved, and you dont see that very often in davekat fics!
davekat, the superior-
Crash Standing by @asukaskerian
It’s been eight days since the end of Sburb and Davesprite is not coping especially well.
IVE SAID IT BEFORE ILL SAY IT AGAIN. BEST. HOMESTUCK FIC. dont look at how many times ive read this dont worry about it. davespritekat is just better than davekat, okay? im sorry. everything is better w davesprite. if youre a davesprite fan i dont even have to say anything else you already know youve gotta read this, but for people who arent- dude, this fic. its such a poignant snapshot of the awkwardness of teenagerdom, especially as a very traumatized teen, and the interpersonal relationships between characters outside of the main two are just so delightful. the john&dave&davesprite dynamic is one i think about constantly, and me and my friend STILL have running jokes about davesprite co< kanaya, which is perhaps the greatest thing to ever be invented, and we have fully incorporated the phrase "sparkle princess alone time" into our day to day vocabulary. i LOVE the gossip chumps, they are everything to me. underrated friendship.
another classic age ship, johndave-

When Dave moves to Washington, he expects to spend the summer alone in his room until school starts. But when he stumbles on the sandlot, he discovers a baseball team needing one more player. He quickly gets dragged into the mix, but there's just one problem: he knows absolute dicksquat about the game. Luckily, John, the high school's best baseball player, swoops in to help. (this is basically a sandlot/baseball au. happy summer!)
ive actually been meaning to reread this one, since its been a long time. im adding it to my marked for later rn. i think of all the johndave fics i ever read, this is the one i think about the most years later. ive never read a fic that just. FELT like summer the way this one does. its intimate and sweet and its got the exact feeling of a hot summer night, lying in the grass and staring up at the stars with your best friend. when i read a johndave fic, i want some real fuckin falling in love with your friend as a stupid kid shit, and this is that

You've determined the hobbies of the monarch you serve are as follows: 1. Ill-timed pranks. 2. Cooking. 3. Subconsciously pulling elaborate political schemes off perfectly, ad infinitum, every one of which inches his mind closer to some ineffable dark chasm you're curious to find the depth of. Anyway, he makes damn good lasagna.
when i tell you this is the best dirkjohn fic i mean nothing else has ever even COMPARED, and that includes my own goddamn fic. fuck ammfh, read THIS. its political intrigue and messy, MESSY relationships, and a john who is an absolute delightful trickster with serious fucking PROBLEMS. the john/vriska/dirk friendship in this is everything, and the design of the strilondes is so fucking cool??? im ngl i think about those blindfolds everyyy time i make an au. its magic, its kingdomstuck, its dnd, its got illustrations, its EVERYTHING. oxfordRoulette is like a fucking professional at writing fics where everyone kind of sucks and is super toxic and a little bit evil and its THE BEST. LOVE this fic
for bropsii-
just read anything by captorvatiing. just go do that. or read the entirety of the @askpsii blog again?? for the ten millionth time? and cry about how theres like no content.
all of my other favorite ships are too niche to have fics </3 lol. read MY fics, thats what you should do. just go read the fics for the tags that i personally started sldkjfnsdlfsdf
ALSO YOU SHOULD READ LET'S BE OUTCASTS BY @curlicuecal. this is the only time ill ever recommend anything thats incomplete but GOD ITS SO GOOD. i wont say anything else. just that its SO. GOOD. and if you like hal or the exiles you will LOVE this

top 5 fics you've written!!
Ooo, that's a tricky one! I'm only gonna consider finished Ao3 autonomous fics - there's so many WIPs in my folders, so many enticing ideas that haven't turned into real fics (yet)... I've also written quite a bit for the Magic: Expanded Multiverse project (Magic the Gathering fics, but keeping the worldbuilding roots and giving a wide berth to canon) and permutations of my own OCs there, but calling most of them - and especially my fave to write - fully autonomous fics would be a bit disingenuous, I feel. I'm still pretty proud of those, though.
So, without further ado and in no particular order, these are the 5 fics that come to mind right now when I think of being the best for me, in combined terms of quality and importance for myself and my growth as a writer:
Dragon's Blood: a classic fairy tale about princes, dragons and maidens fair... with a twist. I've had a lot of fun, experimenting with the narrative tone! The connection with the original media is practically nonexistent - a wink to a certain character of the aforementioned MtG fan project.
The Antlion's Den: A Naruto recursive fanfic. I have an undying appreciation for what @jumpingjacktrash did for me just by existing and posting his stories, so when I had the inspiration to make recursive fics of his work I jumped at the chance to... return the favor, in a sense? The Antlion's Den is the meatier of the two fic, featuring his OC being cute, my OC being a bastard and a bigass fight at the end... when he said it was the best recursive fic he had ever received it easily made my week - I still smile at the thought.
Farewell gifts: This is a shared spot with Breaking Point and Woven In, really - they are my first steps in the Miraculous "fanficdom", but while Breaking Point features one of my best tropes ever and it's my very first ML (and Loveybug!) fic, Farewell Gifts features the Mariwalker post-reveal scene I wrote in THREE DIFFERENT FICS (wtf) and most importantly it was the first time I tried to engage a sweet, adorable teenage romance on its terms - I'm way more used to write gritty fights, bitchy dialogue and angst.
Undercover: the first smut I publicly shared! It was so exciting, to explore this whole new genre, weaving fluff and smut with no further goal than indulging my writing itch! And the response was incredible, it gave me so much confidence to continue and eventually write Augmentation and its continuation, which I'm pretty sure I'll finish writing at some point. Speaking of long-awaited conclusions...
Are Hexagon Square Dances a Thing?: if you had asked me a few weeks ago, this wouldn't have made the cut. I was so excited to join in @asukiess's Valentine Week celebration of Loveybug, figuring out a way to use all the LoveyWeek prompts to build some sort of plot (with @mostmagical's amazing help) and daily posting was so much fun! ...until it came to a jarring stop. The very last chapter got stuck in my brain sideways, and it took me EIGHT MONTHS to get through it. It soured the whole memory of that delightful week for me, so I'm glad I was able to finish it. To keep with the First Times theme, this was the first fandom event I joined in my life! And except for that snag at the end, I had a grand time.
Thank you for the ask! It was cool, to look back at my work this way 💜

6. Are there any fics from others you reread all the time?
yes! so many. i reread fics that i like over and over and over and over. if you take a look at my recs tag, ive probably read every single one of those several times over. but! here are some that ive probably given the most rereads, to the point where i dont always comment anymore bc i think im just spamming the author
OBVIOUSLY lee shore by @jumpingjacktrash makes this list. its the eridave fic of all time. ive read it more times than i can count and even when im on the outs with homestuck i always circle back to it
Crash Standing by @asukaskerian is probably my favorite homestuck fic of all time. point blank period. i reread it over and over and over again and i make all of my friends read it over and over again too. its davesprite/karkat and it the attention it places on platonic side relationships is a crucial part of my enjoyment esp the ds/kanaya dynamic which is so fucking iconic ill never ever get over it. it also just feels like such an honest portrayal of the messiness of being a teenager and i just. i love it a lot
dust devils on the horizon by @akumastrife is a jayroy fic i read so often its embarrassing. do not look at the comments and count how many are me. i dont want to think about it. after a while i just stopped commenting bc it was all me rereading and it was mortifying. its a cowboy au and the soft unbelievably tender moments in this fic are next level. the little ways they touch each other and roys achingly fond yearning kills me every time. when roy rides his horse close enough to jason to tip his chin back with the toe of his boot? it takes up so much space in my brain man. i think about it all the time
otherwise, there are a couple different poisonivory and shenanigans fics that i just read over and over again but this post is long enough
11. Do you have specific playlists for writing fics?
kind of and yes. i have a couple Vibes playlists and sometimes if the mood calls for it ill play one of those over and over again to set the mood right (like playing a sad playlist when im writing angst). i will also just loop One song over and over again while i write something. my lvl2 playlist is full of songs like that that i just collected by the end. while i was working on my current jdau wip earlier this week i was looping i think uhh mother nature by the hu? like. triangle, mother nature, and one or two others, i cant remember.
20. What’s a favorite title for a fic you’ve written?
ive answered this question a lot i think. hollow americana is still my favorite and the mystery of the old boathouse is up there. but of recent fics i think under the skin is kind of funny just bc of tommys fascination with 2fs scars and his background as a surgeon, and bc of the way they both drive each other nuts. i feel neutral at best about most of the other recent ones a lot of them were major copouts bc the jdau is just too long and im tired

jumpingjacktrash:
the-real-seebs:
ursulavernon:
Frogs fall out of my mouth when I talk. Toads, too.
It used to be a problem.
There was an incident when I was young and cross and fed up parental expectations. My sister, who is the Good One, has gold fall from her lips, and since I could not be her, I had to go a different way.
So I got frogs. It happens.
“You’ll grow into it,” the fairy godmother said. “Some curses have cloth-of-gold linings.” She considered this, and her finger drifted to her lower lip, the way it did when she was forgetting things. “Mind you, some curses just grind you down and leave you broken. Some blessings do that too, though. Hmm. What was I saying?”
I spent a lot of time not talking. I got a slate and wrote things down. It was hard at first, but I hated to drop the frogs in the middle of the road. They got hit by cars, or dried out, miles away from their damp little homes.
Toads were easier. Toads are tough. After awhile, I learned to feel when a word was a toad and not a frog. I could roll the word around on my tongue and get the flavor before I spoke it. Toad words were drier. Desiccated is a toad word. So is crispand crisis and obligation. So are elegant and matchstick.
Frog words were a bit more varied. Murky. Purple.Swinging. Jazz.
I practiced in the field behind the house, speaking words over and over, sending small creatures hopping into the evening. I learned to speak some words as either toads or frogs. It’s all in the delivery.
Love is a frog word, if spoken earnestly, and a toad word if spoken sarcastically. Frogs are not good at sarcasm.
Toads are masters of it.
I learned one day that the amphibians are going extinct all over the world, that some of them are vanishing. You go to ponds that should be full of frogs and find them silent. There are a hundred things responsible—fungus and pesticides and acid rain.
When I heard this, I cried “What!?” so loudly that an adult African bullfrog fell from my lips and I had to catch it. It weighed as much as a small cat. I took it to the pet store and spun them a lie in writing about my cousin going off to college and leaving the frog behind.
I brooded about frogs for weeks after that, and then eventually, I decided to do something about it.
I cannot fix the things that kill them. It would take an army of fairy godmothers, and mine retired long ago. Now she goes on long cruises and spreads her wings out across the deck chairs.
But I can make more.
I had to get a field guide at first. It was a long process. Say a word and catch it, check the field marks. Most words turn to bronze frogs if I am not paying attention.
Poison arrow frogs make my lips go numb. I can only do a few of those a day. I go through a lot of chapstick.
It is a holding action I am fighting, nothing more. I go to vernal pools and whisper sonnets that turn into wood frogs. I say the words squeak and squill and spring peepers skitter away into the trees. They begin singing almost the moment they emerge.
I read long legal documents to a growing audience of Fowler’s toads, who blink their goggling eyes up at me. (I wish I could do salamanders. I would read Clive Barker novels aloud and seed the streams with efts and hellbenders. I would fly to Mexico and read love poems in another language to restore the axolotl. Alas, it’s frogs and toads and nothing more. We make do.)
The woods behind my house are full of singing. The neighbors either learn to love it or move away.
My sister—the one who speaks gold and diamonds—funds my travels. She speaks less than I do, but for me and my amphibian friends, she will vomit rubies and sapphires. I am grateful.
I am practicing reading modernist revolutionary poetry aloud. My accent is atrocious. Still, a day will come when the Panamanian golden frog will tumble from my lips, and I will catch it and hold it, and whatever word I spoke, I’ll say again and again, until I stand at the center of a sea of yellow skins, and make from my curse at last a cloth of gold.
Terri Windling posted recently about the old fairy tale of frogs falling from a girl’s lips, and I started thinking about what I’d do if that happened to me, and…well…
!.
You know how if you go through years and years of “best science fiction short stories”, every so often you find some short story you’ve never heard of before, but it’s just amazing and brilliant and leaves you wondering why you never read stories with that plot before? This is one of those.
Seriously, wow.
this made me smile.
i’m still smiling.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, BOILS AND GHOULS, TONIGHT I HAVE FOR YOU THE SINGLE WORST WAY TO COOK SWEET POTATOES
no but really After The Storm by @roach-works, @splickedylit, and @rollerskatinglizard has eaten my got dang brain, and I spent about 12 hours over the past two days inventing a recipe for blocks, aka a war crime against all root-kind.
My goal was to create a preserved food consisting only of ingredients that were food items in and of themselves, or in other words no nutritional supplements. At first I had nothing to go off of other than that each meal includes 2 blocks, they can be safely eaten on their own with no additional foods, and they are soy- and gluten-free, so my ingredients list was very arbitrary and consisted mainly tomato paste, Parmesan cheese, eggs, and rolled oats. I presented the preliminary idea on the ATS discord, where @onwardmotley pointed out some posts where the authors mentioned other clues which I had missed, most importantly that the main ingredients were sweet potatoes and fish, and Ammoth (doesn’t have a tumblr) worked out that the average baseline daily calorie intake in the Fleet would be around 3000 kcal.
And thus I present to you... blocks.
recipe for a day's worth of (non-vegetarian) blocks:
ingredients: - 19 3/4 medium sweet potatoes - 180 grams powdered dried cod - 85 grams shellfish of choice - 40 grams sunflower oil - 27 grams powdered egg yolk - 10 grams powdered UV-exposed mushrooms - 6 grams salt - 3 grams dried spinach flakes
1) bake sweet potatoes in their skins until the skin is able to be pricked without resistance. 2) peel, saving skins. 3) steam shellfish until done 4) in a separate bowl, sift together cod, egg yolk, mushrooms, salt, and spinach powders. 5) combine sweet potato skins, shellfish, powder mix, and oil in a blender and pulse until homogeneous. 6) mash sweet potatoes until no lumps remain 7) using a mixer because otherwise your arm will fall off, mix paste into sweet potatoes until homogeneous. 8) spread onto dehydrator sheets and dry until the mixture reaches roughly the consistency of play-dough. 9) shape into 6 cubes of equal size and weight. 10) continue dehydrating until completely solid. 11) may the gods have mercy on you, because this thing sure as hell won't.
each block has 506 calories and at minimum 1/6 the daily requirement of every essential vitamin and mineral, is soy, gluten, and peanut free, and can withstand at least three times as much pressure as can be created by your straight white cis abled evangelical christian aunt when its Christmas and you are desperately trying to find an excuse to not visit.
recipe for a day's worth of (vegetarian) blocks:
ingredients: - 21 medium sweet potatoes - 85 grams powdered whole egg - 40 grams sunflower oil - 10 grams powdered UV-exposed mushrooms - 6 grams salt - 3 grams dried spinach flakes - 2 grams powdered eggshell
1) bake sweet potatoes in their skins until the skin is able to be pricked without resistance. 2) peel, saving skins. 3) in a separate bowl, sift together egg, mushrooms, salt, spinach, and eggshell powders. 4) combine sweet potato skins, powder mix, and oil in a blender and pulse until homogeneous. 5) mash sweet potatoes until no lumps remain 6) using a mixer because otherwise your hand will mutiny, mix paste into sweet potatoes until homogeneous. 7) spread onto dehydrator sheets and dry until the mixture reaches roughly the consistency of play dough. 8) shape into 6 cubes of equal size and weight. 9) continue dehydrating until completely solid. 10) gaze upon thy works, ye mighty, and despair.
each block has 504 calories and at minimum 1/6 the daily requirement of every essential vitamin and mineral, is soy, gluten, and peanut free, and can produce 4.7 times the amount of killing intent as the local horrifically racist hack psychic does when politely informed that her card tricks are less entertaining than the gay kid in the cafeteria who just learned how to do The Acme of Control.

Couldn’t resist doodling Myria from your Naruto fic.
And then I could resist drawing him interacting with my chuunin Tsubaki, lecturing him on how looking unthreatening is one of the best weapons one can have. I think they’d have a lot of fun - she’d love his bright attitude.
