DARPA（ダーパ）は、かつてARPAだった時期に、インターネットの原型であるARPANETなどを開発したことで有名です。全地球測位システムのGPSを開発したことでも知られています。

この息をのむような講演で彼女は、マッハ20の大気圏外から落下していくグライダー、ハチドリの動きを再現したロボット。

思考でコントロールすることのできる義手、ディスプレイ内蔵コンタクトレンズといったDARPAの驚くべき革新的なプロジェクトの数々を次々に紹介していきます。

他に開発したプロジェクトとしては、「DARPA Robotics Challenge」(DRC)などやiPhoneに搭載されているsiri。お掃除するロボットのルンバも原型はここから出発しています。

技術オタクには、優しくすべきです。私は敢えてこう言います。もし身の回りに技術オタクが、まだいないようなら１人くらい見つけるべきだと少なくとも私自身はそう思います。

科学者や技術者は、世界を変えます。私がお話ししたいのは、DARPAという魔法のような場所のことです。

そこでは科学者や技術者が、失敗への恐怖をはねのけ不可能に挑んでいます。

不可能と失敗という考えは、みんなが思っているよりも強く結びついています。失敗への恐怖を取り除くとき不可能が突然可能になるからです。

どうすればそうなるのか知りたければ、こう自分に問うてみてください「絶対失敗しないと分かっていたとしたらどんなことに挑戦しようとするだろう？」

本気でこの問いを考えるならきっと居心地悪く感じるはずです。私は感じます。こう問うたとき、失敗の恐怖がいかに自分を制限しているかに気づくからです。

それがいかにすごいことへの挑戦を押しとどめ人生を退屈なものにし、驚くようなことを起きなくさせているか。

いいことは起きるにしても驚くほど素晴らしいことは起きなくなります。

誤解のないように言っておきますが、私が勧めているのは、失敗することではなく失敗への恐怖をなくすということです。

私達を制限しているのは、失敗自体ではありません。本当に新しいかつて為されたことのないものへと至る道は、常に失敗を伴います。

試練を受けるのです。ある意味、試練は偉大なことへと至る途上にある感触を与えてくれるのです。

クレマンソーは言っています「人生は失敗したときに面白くなる。失敗は、自分を越えたというしるしだからだ」

1895年、ケルヴィン卿は、空気よりも重い飛行機械は不可能であると断言しました。

1903年10月、空気力学の専門家の間で支配的だった意見は、１千万年後だったら空飛ぶ機械も作れるかもしれないというものでした。

その２ヶ月後の12月17日、オーヴィル・ライトは最初の動力飛行機でノースカロライナの浜辺を飛行しました。飛行時間は12秒。距離は40メートル。1903年のことでした。

１年後に、また別な不可能の宣言が出てきます。フランス陸軍で最も独創的で明敏な知性を持つと言われた将軍フェルディナン・フォッシュは「飛行機は面白いおもちゃだが、軍事的価値はない」と言いました。

40年後、空気力学の専門家たちは、遷音速(transonic)という用語を作り綴りのs、を１つにするか２つにするかで議論していました。

彼らは、この飛行機の時代にあって疑問を抱えていました。音速よりも速く飛ぶことが、そもそも可能なのか分からなかったのです。

1947年には、マッハ0.85を超える風洞データはありませんでした。

それにもかかわらず1947年10月14日火曜日、チャック・イェーガーは、ベルX-1のコクピットに乗り込んで未知の可能性に向けて飛び立ち音速よりも速く飛んだ最初のパイロットとなったのです。

アトラスロケット８つのうち６つは、発射台の上で爆発しました。

11回の完全なミッション失敗ののち初めて宇宙からの画像を手にできましたが、この最初の飛行だけでU-2偵察機による調査のすべてを合わせたよりも多くのデータが手に入ったのです。

そこに至るまでには、多くの失敗が重ねられました。

空を飛べるようになって以来、人類は、より速くより遠くへ飛びたいと思い続けてきました。そのためには、不可能に見えることでも実現できると信じる必要がありました。

失敗への恐怖を拒む必要がありました。このことは現在でも変わりません。今日お話しするのは遷音速飛行でも超音速飛行でもなく極超音速飛行の話です。

マッハ２とか３ではなくマッハ20です。

マッハ20だとニューヨークからここカリフォルニア州ロングビーチまで11分20秒で来られます。

このスピードで飛ぶと翼の表面は、金属も溶けてしまう摂氏2,000度に達します。まるで溶鉱炉のようで飛びながら翼を燃やすような状態になります。

そして私達はそれをやろうとしているのです。

DARPAの極超音速試作機は、これまでに作られた操縦可能な飛行機として最速のものです。ミノタウロスIVロケットで宇宙に近い高度まで運び上げてから射出します。

ミノタウロスIVは推進力が強すぎるので威力をそぐ必要があり軌道のある部分では、迎角89度で飛行させています。

これはロケットとしては、不自然な動作です。ロケットの三段目にカメラがついていてロケットカムと呼んで��ます。それが極超音速グライダーに向けられています。

これは１回目の飛行におけるロケットカムの実際の映像です。形を隠すためアスペクト比を若干変えてありますが、これはロケットの第三段目から撮影した無人グライダーが地球の大気圏に向かう様子です。

２回飛行を行いました、最初の飛行では、機体の空力的制御なしでしたが、それでも極超音速飛行について30年間の地上試験すべてのデータを合わせたよりも多くのデータを取ることができました。

２回目の飛行では、３分間完全に制御されたマッハ20での空力的飛行を行いました。もう一度飛ばす必要があります。かつて行われたことのない途轍もないことをするには、実際に飛ばすしかありません。

飛ぶことなしにマッハ20の飛行について学ぶことはできないのです。運動性はスピードに代わるものではありませんが、それに劣らず重要なものです。

マッハ20のグライダーだとニューヨークから、ロングビーチまで11分20秒ですが、ハチドリならさあ何日かかるでしょう。

ハチドリは極超音速ではありませんが、高い運動性を持っています。事実、ハチドリは後ろ向きに飛べる唯一のです。上にも下にも前にも後ろにも飛べ上下逆さになっても飛べます。

屋内や人の入れない場所に行かせたいなら十分に小さく運動性の高い飛行機が必要になります。

これはハチドリロボットです。後ろも含めあらゆる方向に飛べます。空中に静止したり回転することもできます。この試作機には、ビデオカメラがついていて重さは単三電池１本よりも軽くできている上、蜜を吸いません。

2008年には、20秒間飛べました。１年後には２分になりそれから６分、今では11分になりました。たくさんの試作機が墜落しました。

本当にたくさんの･･･でもハチドリのように飛ぶ方法を学ぶには、飛ばす以外にないのです(美しいと思いません？ああ素敵、マットは人類初のハチドリパイロットです。

失敗は、新しくすごい物を作る過程の一部なのです。失敗を恐れていたら新しくすごいものを作るのは不可能です。でこぼこの地面を犬のように安定して歩くロボット。

氷の上さえ歩きます･･･チーターのように走るロボット。階段を人のように上れ時折、人と同じ様なドジもするロボット。スパイダーマンはいつかヤモリマンになるかもしれません。

ヤモリは、指先１つでぶら下がっていることができます。ヤモリの足の裏には、１平方ミリあたり1万4千本の毛状の構造があってそれが分子間力によって面に張り付きます。

現在の技術でヤモリの足の裏の毛に似た構造を作ることができます。出来上がった10センチ四方の人工ナノ・ヤモリ粘着物は、300キロの静的荷重を支えられます。

つまり、42インチプラズマテレビ６台をネジなしで壁に貼り付けられるのです。なかなかすごいマジックテープでしょう？

A Canadian real estate developer that is building the first Muslim, family-friendly resort in the Dominican Republic has a purchase contract for one of the largest undeveloped tracts on Osceola County's W192 corridor and plans a similar 5-star resort.

The Everest Group of Companies is eyeing the 217-acre parcel at the southwest corner of U.S. 192 and the Western Beltway (S.R. 429), just across the toll road from Margaritaville Resort. This is the same property that was under contract twice in recent years, first for a controversial auto racing attraction, then for a sports complex which failed to close the deal despite a $20 million commitment from the county. It's priced at $13.75 million.

Everest is working with David Portwood, president of Davenport Consulting Group, and Kimley-Horn's Jordan Draper on its conceptual planning and due diligence. They met with Osceola County's Development Review Committee Wednesday for a pre-application meeting to discuss the latest master plan for the resort with a working title of "Golden Lagoon."

Portwood told GrowthSpotter he estimates the project budget at roughly $500 million. The first phase would begin on the northern end of the property and would include a mix of multi-story retail buildings, restaurants, multifamily and the first of several luxury hotels. Portwood said the full-service hotels would be 5-star quality with ample meeting and convention space.

Everest CEO Zafir Rashid formed an Orlando-based affiliate company, GMR Development Orlando Inc., for the project, which will be its first in the United States. In Canada, the company specializes in multi-family real estate, student residences, commercial/retail mixed-use communities, and hospitality properties.

The master plan and mood board indicate the project would replicate some of the features of Everest Group's Grand Medina Resort just north of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. An earlier site plan provided to Osceola County continued the Grand Medina branding. Portwood said the developer has not announced whether newly renamed Golden Lagoon would be designed specifically for Muslim tourists.

「もしも、絶対に研究が失敗しないと分かっていたとしたら、あなたは、いったいどんなことに挑戦しようとするだろう？」とDARPA(米国防高等研究計画局)局長であるレギーナ・ドゥーガンは問います。

DARPA（ダーパ）は、かつてARPAだった時期に、インターネットの原型であるARPANETなどを開発したことで有名です。全地球測位システムのGPSを開発したことでも知られています。

この息をのむような講演で彼女は、マッハ20の大気圏外から落下していくグライダー、ハチドリの動きを再現したロボット。

思考でコントロールすることのできる義手、ディスプレイ内蔵コンタクトレンズといったDARPAの驚くべき革新的なプロジェクトの数々を次々に紹介していきます。

他に開発したプロジェクトとしては、「DARPA Robotics Challenge」(DRC)などやiPhoneに搭載されているsiri。お掃除するロボットのルンバも原型はここから出発しています。

かつて、インターネットの原型を作ったこの研究機関を動かしているのは、失敗を恐れないということなのです。(講演後クリス・アンダーソンによるQ&Aがあります)

その後、Googleに入ってProjectTango他の開発についています。

Googleで開発中のプロジェクト・タンゴ(Project Tango)とは、画期的高速3D認識センサーのこと。

周囲を高速で3Dスキャンして、モーショントラッキングと同時に3Dマップをリアルタイムで瞬時に生成することができます。

2018年には、Project Tangoの開発を終了。ARの取り組みはARCoreに引き継ぐことでソフトで全て処理できるようになっています。

２０１６年からは、フェイスブック（Facebook）に移籍して開発を指揮しています。

頭脳と直結してテキスト入力などができるコンピューター・インターフェイスを開発。頭脳への電極等の埋め込みをしない形式で、脳を毎秒100回スキャンして画像を生成し、声に出さなくても思考している内容を文字にする。

最終的には、脳への埋め込みなしに脳と直結するインターフェイスの実��を目標としている。

プライバシー対策として「これは、あらゆる考えでを読み取ってしまうようなテクノロジーではない。直接入力のためにユーザーが意識的に言語中枢に送った言葉だけを解読する」

「われわれは、スマートフォンでたくさん写真を撮るが、公開するのはそのうちの何枚かに過ぎない。われわれのハードウェアが実用化しても、内心の自由を妨げることはない。」

À toi appartient le regard…uno sguardo critico su 4 continenti: Africa, Asia, Oceania, Americhe

-- Dal 20 giugno al 1° novembre 2020, il museo parigino Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac presenta la Mostra "A te appartiene lo sguardo e (...) l'infinita connessione tra le cose". È una Mostra su larga scala, che per una serie di ragioni potremmo definire stra-ordinaria, cioè fuori dell’ordinario.

Innanzitutto, per la presenza di ben 26 autori, tutti di provenienza extra-europea, ma con profili artistici e percorsi culturali molto diversi: giovani ed emergenti, poco conosciuti in Francia e in Europa, come Gosette Lubondo (DRC), Lek Kiatsirikajorn (Tailandia) o José Luis Cuevas (Messico), ma anche molti personaggi famosi, già affermati nel panorama internazionale, come Samuel Fosso (Camerun), Dinh Q. Lê (Vietnam) e Sammy Baloji (Repubblica Democratica del Congo).

In secondo luogo, per la pluralità e complessità dei temi trattati che si concentrano su tre aspetti della realtà contemporanea, molto spesso intrecciati tra loro. Temi che coniugano la percezione di sé e del proprio mondo con il recupero dell’identità storica del proprio passato e del proprio territorio, che proveremo brevemente a illustrare, a partire dalle opere di alcuni autori, noti e meno noti, presenti in Mostra:

- il rapporto con la percezione del mondo e la rappresentazione di sé stessi (Autoportrait Serie Sixsixsix  e African Spirits di Manuel Fosso, Imaginary Trip II  di Gosette Lubondo e The Black Photo Album/Look at me: 1880-1950 del sudafricano Santu Mofokeng);

- il rapporto tra l’uomo e il paesaggio e il territorio nei continenti extra-europei, presente con declinazioni diverse nelle opere di Lek Kiatsirikajorn, del fotografo e poeta cubano Carlos Garaicoa e del fotografo congolese Sammy Baloji;

- il recupero del passato, attraverso la riappropriazione della narrazione storica e politica, per lo più legata alle vicende trascorse di guerra e di colonizzazione (Crossing the Farther Shore del vietnamita Dinh Q. Lê e The Indian Project: Rebuilding History del messicano Yoshua Okón).

Infine, per le differenti modalità con cui vengono “trattate” le diverse forme dell'immagine contemporanea: entrando negli spazi espositivi, lo spettatore viene catturato all’interno di un caleidoscopio di immagini, costituite da fotografie tradizionali, video, diaporama, installazioni multimediali e fotografie elaborate con tecniche miste.

La percezione del mondo e la rappresentazione di sé

La visita si snoda lungo un percorso molto articolato ed esteso, che si apre sulla spettacolare opera di Samuel Fosso: Autoportrait Serie Sixsixsix, (666 autoritratti realizzati a Parigi nel 2015 con una Polaroid grande formato), che - come dice Christine Barthe Commissario della Mostra - “placent le visiteur dans un face-à-face actif qui ne livre pas une clé de signification immédiate”.

In realtà, in quest’opera Fosso vuole rappresentare la vita in tutte le sue manifestazioni negative, attraverso le emozioni, nel tentativo di esorcizzare il proprio risentimento di fronte alle sventure del mondo, che peraltro ha dovuto subire durante la sua infanzia e adolescenza, prima di diventare un artista affermato. Dello stesso autore va segnalata anche l’opera African Spirits, a cavallo fra la percezione del mondo a cui si appartiene e la rappresentazione delle icone che hanno fatto “la storia dei neri”: opera che appunto presenta i ritratti di tutti i principali personaggi che hanno militato per i diritti civili o l’indipendenza coloniale.

Ancora sul tema della percezione di sé e del proprio mondo, va segnalato il diaporama The Black Photo Album/Look at me, omaggio a Santu Mofokeng, recentemente scomparso, famoso fotogiornalista dell’ aparttheid life sudafricana, È costituito dalla collezione di 80 ritratti di famiglie nere sud-africane, raccolti dal fotografo e pubblicati nel 2013: fotografie private, commissionate tra il 1890-1950 da famiglie di lavoratori neri urbani e della classe media, che vogliono rappresentarsi, aspirando a un riconoscimento sociale in tempi di dominio coloniale, che verrà inesorabilmente cancellato dall’apartheid.

Sullo stesso tema della rappresentazione del mondo, Gosette Lubondo con la serie Imaginary Trip II, mescolando realtà e finzione, mette in scena diversi personaggi che sembrano muoversi come fantasmi, immersi in ambienti abbandonati e pervasi da atmosfere misteriose.

Il rapporto tra l’uomo e il paesaggio e il territorio nei paesi extraeuropei

Molti artisti si sono cimentati su questo tema, affrontandolo da punti di vista diversi, ma sempre con lo spirito critico teso a denunciare le pesanti trasformazioni urbane e ambientali dei territori, dell’Africa, dell’Asia e delle Americhe.

Ad esempio, l’opera del congolese Sammy Baloji, Essay on urban planning, denuncia gli interventi urbani e industriali del periodo coloniale in Congo, mediante una contaminazione metaforica di fotografie aeree e pannelli di insetti di provenienza museale.

Analogamente, Lek Kiatsirikajorn con la serie Lost in Paradise volge il suo sguardo critico sulle trasformazioni urbanistiche della Tailandia, causate dallo sviluppo economico deciso dal governo nel corso degli anni ’80.

Diversamente, il cubano Carlos Garaicoa con la serie Frases, riprende una sua precedente opera e contamina la fotografia con la parola, inserendo propri commenti sopra le fotografie dei grandi magazzini della capitale Avana.

Il recupero della storia e dell’identità perduta

Tema particolarmente significativo, che ricerca le identità perdute con lo sguardo rivolto al passato.

Il messicano Yoshua Okòn con il suo video The Indian Project: Rebuilding History, realizzato nel 2015 a Showhegan negli Stati Uniti, va alla riscoperta di questa minoranza che rivendica una amerindian identity.

Mentre con l’opera Crossing the Farther Shore, il vietnamita Dinh Q. Lê vuole far rivivere coloro che la storia ha dimenticato. A questo scopo ha realizzato un’ imponente e suggestiva istallazione, costituita da molti volumi che assomigliano a zanzariere, dove appende un’enorme quantità di foto di piccolo formato appartenenti a famiglie anonime degli anni 1920-1970, che ha raccolto come unica testimonianza e traccia di quello che il governo vietnamita nella sua feroce repressione non ha potuto cancellare.

À toi appartient le regard et (...) la liaison infinie entre les choses: che dire di questa Mostra così vasta e complessa, difficile da descrivere e raccontare, che obbliga lo sguardo del visitatore a piegarsi e riflettere dentro sé stesso, per dare un proprio senso a ciò che vede e percepisce nei racconti e nelle storie che mostrano non tanto una realtà oggettiva, quanto il punto di vista del singolo artista, cioè il suo sguardo sul mondo, sempre in bilico tra poesia e denuncia, tra passato e presente, tra realtà e finzione…

È una Mostra indubbiamente aperta, potremmo azzardare rizomatica – scomodando i filosofi francesi - senza gerarchie interne, per alcuni versi anche disorientante, nonostante lo sforzo di sistematizzarla dentro uno schema interpretativo composto da 5 sezioni…Certamente una Mostra che richiede al visitatore-spettatore un impegno non indifferente di analisi e riflessione…un impegno pari almeno a quello di chi visita l’altrettanto poderosa collezione delle Civiltà di Africa, Asia, Oceania e Americhe, voluta da Jaques Chirac con la realizzazione del museo Quai Branly.
