And that sounds a whole hell of a lot like su she, su she is the most useful of people and he'd be happy enough with that. Why do you dislike 3zun? ( I'm always interesting about your mdzs thoughts , specifically that one that includes jin Guangyao( and his ships that's why I asking)

i've come back to this ask off and on for months now, so i'm sorry i've been leaving you in limbo about it! to be clear, when i'm talking about disliking an interpretation of the 3zun dynamic that involves a romance between all three participants, i'm talking about the throuple interpretation, but also n!elan and n!eyao. (not that i think that needed much clarification lol. i suspect anyone who has been following my blog for longer than 5 minutes knows i'm ride or die for xiyao.)

i'll put this under a cut because i don't want to make my romantic 3zun enjoyer mutuals sad 🥲 my response really isn't going to be very long, or surprising, but in short:

there's just no canon support for it.

i know this is not what everyone needs for their ships to be enjoyable, but it's necessary for me. "but ray, don't you ship chengyao and suyao? those ships aren't canon." you're right, but a romantic interpretation of those relationships also isn't the prevailing opinion on those character dynamics, either. most of the time when i encounter jgy interacting with jc or sms in fic (again, most of the time), their interactions with each other in the story don't strain credulity. this is unfortunately not the case when it comes to romantic 3zun, where 1) fanon 'nice mingjue' da-ge is the prevailing interpretation of nmj, 2) cold, calculating, murder kitten a-yao is the prevailing interpretation of jgy, and 3) lxc is equally emotionally invested in his relationships with both of them, when this is just demonstrably not the case in either the book or the show.

i do want to be very clear that i'm not saying this to shit on nmj or people who enjoy n!elan, as long as they're not being cunty at me, but the way n!elan is written about in discourse, meta, and fic is a blatant lift-and-shift of the canon xiyao dynamic onto this fanon interpretation of the relationship between lxc and nmj. years of enduring, supportive friendship where both parties are consistently seeking each other out? that's xiyao. i'm not saying that nmj and lxc were not good friends and that their relationship wasn't important, but when lxc is presented with a choice between nmj or jgy, he consistently, each time, chooses jgy: to empathize with him, and to protect him, and to spend time in his company. he isn't going to qinghe for months at a time to be with da-ge. he goes to jinlintai, to be with jgy.

i also don't see the relationship between jgy and nmj as being an emotionally intimate one. i don't think they're friends, let alone lovers, and i don't think that's something either of them are interested in at any point in their history. prior to his legitimization (and after, but especially before), meng yao would never have put himself in a position where even the hint of impropriety could be entertained about his relationship with his superior. and while i do agree with what others have written about nmj's hypocrisy and inability to read the goddamn room, i also don't think he would ever entertain the notion of taking advantage of one of his subordinates that way. i am hardly nmj's biggest fan, but i wouldn't ever characterize him as a man who would knowingly put his own desires ahead of his principles. if he did desire meng yao sexually--and again, i don't think he did--he would never act on it. and then of course after the scorching sun palace and jgy's legitimization, jgy is transparently afraid of being alone with nmj, and nmj's only thoughts about jgy involve wanting to kill him. the only way i can ship n!eyao is if it is written as a one-sided, unreciprocated, psychosexual obsession on nmj's part, but understandably that is not the vibe most people who do enjoy this ship go for.

anyway, those are my thoughts. i very much hope my romantic 3zun friends don't friendship-break up with me now, lol.

SuYao headcanons

Yes I am just as surprised as anyone who has heard me talk about 3zun

Su Minshan considers himself not funny, but when he's truly pissed off he comes up with very intricate insults- that made JGY laugh once and he keeps that moment close to heart

JGY once accidentally snapped at Su She and thought oh no it's over, now he will be plotting against me, but Su She just apologised and tried to fix the issue. Since then JGY is very comfortable ordering su she around.

Su She likes it when JGY casually orders him around, it makes him feel like they are friends. (The ordering around still isn't demeaning btw, it's just coming around more often)

Su she really likes it when JGY gets mad or upset but it doesn't happen nearly enough.

JGY constantly finds himself getting kind of meaner (by his standards) in the way he talks to su she and gets scared at the loss of control before reeling it back in.

JGY also very much feels the need to get meaner and ruder with su she to see how far he can push su she but stops himself because it might hurt su she and he's on his team. He will not turn to that.

LXC dies from a qi deviation, his famous last words being "you're actually choosing THAT GUY over me????"

after that, everyone kinda forgets about the whole XY thing. even NMJ. so JGS is no longer pressing JGY to get rid of him in a timely manner, NMJ passes away on his own like a year later than he did in the canon.

with the lan and nie sect being weakened by the loss of their respective leaders, JGS is sure to take over the cultivation world now, right??? WRONG. SMS offs him as a 5th anniversary gift for his beloved. no prostitutes are involved, this is a very ethical murder this time.

oh, and JGY never married QS in this AU because SMS was very open about his feelings from the start and they've been secretly dating since like. a couple of years after the sunshot campaign ended. JGY doesn't know QS is his half-sister since madam jin never felt the need to disclose that information, but they end up having a wholesome friendship!

LWJ absolutely hates their guts but can't do anything about it because "chief cultivator has a shit taste in men" (which is objectively untrue btw) is NOT a valid reason to overthrow someone.

What made me ship it?

SMS is A Real One. He's the loyal dog trope in its purest form, standing by his cancelled liege to the point of giving his life for him without ever expecing anything in return.

Also, he was probably the person JGY trusted most, he knew of almost all the skeletons in jiggy's closest and his entire sect was at JGY's disposition regardless of how "evil" the plan was.

What are my favorite things about the ship?

The aforementioned trust and devotion. It's no secret that JGY is my specialest baby girl and having someone who is not going to judge him and is going to stand with him and take his secrets to the grave if necessary is tbh one of the very few things he ever asked for.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Dunno if unpopular, but I think it works best as a one-sided affair. I totally believe my boi SMS deserves to be given a treat from time to time, but given the fact that what JGY truly wants most is security and political protection (other than understanding and respect), even if SMS is a sect leader, JGY will always be more powerful than him and that's personally not the kind of dynamic that makes my brain go brrrr in a jiggy ship, and that's the only reason why suyao is not higher on my list ^^;

Ships that make me sad! So many 😭 (also thank you for asking, I love getting game asks!)

So first up my blorbos eternal: Xiyao. The way they end in canon breaks my heart, but at least there's a lot of super fluffy fanfic out there!

Then there's suyao, because I cannot fully read JGY as in love with anyone but LXC, so it's always a one-sided or second choice situation in my head, and that makes me sad.

But the real winner of Ships that Make Me Sad is chengxian. There was one fic, it was a modern AU, where WWX and JC were sleeping together at college, and JC thought it meant something but WWX was like 'this is just bros helping each other out' (but in his head because talking about things is illegal I guess) and when he met LWJ it was immediate heart eyes and JC was like 'what about us?' and WWX was like '...there's an us?'. And then JC went and fucked Wei Changze about it but that's not the point, the point is that that fic completely encapsulates the absolute emptiness and desolation of finding out that something that meant A Lot to you meant nothing to the other person. Which is very much the canon vibes of chengxian because you can't tell me that that's not how Jiang Cheng feels about what WWX said at the temple.

1. Why don’t you ship it?

Eeeer i say i don't but it's not that i don't find it intriguing, or that i don't enjoy the occasional fanart. It's just that i don't care about NMJ or LXC at all lol i love JGY but for me to really ship for real i need to like all parties involved to at least a similar degree, and the two just don't do it for me. I don't hate them, i don't think they are bad characters or anything like that, they just don't captivate me.

   2. What would have made you like it?

Caring about NMJ or LXC lol i think if they grew on me significantly i could come to like the ship (happened to suyao! the second  fic sold me on SMS i started shipping, so i don't think it's impossible for it to happen with NMJ or LXC)

   3. Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

It's objectively tasty. The layers of relationships and trust and mistrust and divorce going on... I kinda wish i DID like the ship because i can tell from an objective standpoint they have a lot of good shit going on and i'm sure the fanfic is fire.

1. What made you ship it?

They killed each other and they're both in love with the same man. What more can i say.

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

Okay first of all it's the hottest combination of SXX hands down. Not even close. It's so hot. It's hot in that way that only characters that killed each other in canon can get

Also HELLO hot power dynamics. Song Lan spent seven years as a corpse-slave xue yang had full control over (so much noncon and dubcon here, so good) but once he regains consciousness the situation is inverse, and it's inverse because xue yang turned the man who hated him the most in world into a fierce corpse that can overpower him at any time. HOT!

ALSO they are romantic rivals but their mutual beloved is DEAD and they both failed him and the closest thing they have of xingchen (besides his soul trapped in a bag) is... each other. No one else can understand their grief but the other.

ALSO 3.0 - Song Lan likes to be in control, but he has a temper, and no one can make him snap faster than xue yang. Again- HOT

And on top of all that there's the fact that it just... makes sense? LISTEN. All you gotta do is create a force proximity situation and i think its bound to happen. Song Lan would be cold and mean sure but he wouldn't mistreat xue yang willingly (in CQL he kills him quickly and mercifully and if anyhing makes his impending death less painful), and would at points even show him kindness, and we KNOW all xue yang needs to fall in love is the attentions of a good and kind man. You know WHO is a good and kind man? So yeah, i think xue yang would go doki doki *inevitably* at some point.

   3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Relative to my last point, i don't like when i see song lan portrayed as someone who would go after revenge on xue yang or who would want to make him suffer. After the baixue massacre he spent three years looking for xingchen, not xue yang, and in CQL he chooses to kill him swiftly and mercifully, and he does so because the final decision is given to him, he doesn't seek it. Their fight in yi city too was not, in my opinion, a search for revenge, but a need to both 1) stall his reunion with xingchen which he's very very anxious about and 2) protect xingchen, remove the imminent danger. So, as tasty as songxue enemies to lovers is, i don't think the usual revenge tropes really fit them at all. He would want to kill xue yang, yes, obviously, but we don't have reason to believe he'd go out of his way for it.

they get to snuggle and scent each other and nest together and it's super cute and lowkey really annoying to the lan bros who um also need snuggles tyvm? why do omegas get to snuggle all the time and it's fine but not alphas huh???

like maybe cloud recesses has some rule about not spending too many nights in bed with your spouse outside of heat periods because it's like... too unrestrained or whatever and like... lan xichen goes ahead and talks about his feelings and his distaste for rigid gender roles and the need for sensuality and physical affection outside of narrowly defined sexuality and diverts his energy into music. And Lan Wangji just burns down every record of such a rule having ever existed and just does what he wants. Lan Qiren doesn't even stop him because he's with an omega and that's the norm for the omegaverse so it's fine.

and maybe jgy and sms are totally platonic like... in-laws I guess? Or maybe it's like some 'it doesn't count if they're both omegas' and omegas doing "technically sexual" things is seen as fine and just something platonic omegas do while the alphas are away like hey gotta get that relief somewhere right? It's absolutely not cheating, fucking your husband's brother's wife is just girly, i mean, omega things. Or maybe it's not. Maybe they really are just very good friends. The point is that they get to snuggle and it's nice and warm and safe and sweet and good and nothing bad ever happens.

i do indeed! i've probably rec'd a few of these before in the past, but i am always glad to rope more people into reading my faves. (i'll also try to rec some other stuff so i'm not just parroting the same recs over and over again lol)

also the vast majority of this is going to be xiyao-flavoured, but there's a peppering of suyao in here, too.

the it's worth it every time series by roquen (aka @fincalinde here on tumblr), which includes my favourite xiyao fix-it fic, the weakness of falling in love. the series revolves around the premise of what would happen if jin guangshan denied jin guangyao permission to marry qin su, meaning that jgy and lxc can now fuck without guilt--and, probably more importantly, what that added emotional intimacy and access to jgy's circumstances reveals to lxc. i love this series because it hews extremely close to canon, which is just the type of fic i personally prefer reading.

abstinence, denial by @ilgaksu, a xiyao vestal virgins AU with a predictably sad ending. still very crunchy.

a painting missing strokes, a song missing notes by occasional_boy_reporter, a post-canon xiyao fix-it following the cql canon. it's unfinished 🥲 but the cliffhanger of the last chapter is still emotionally satisfying imo, and there is SO much good and crunchy su minshan (and decidedly one-sided suyao) content. good good food.

25. What’s your favorite part of the writing process (worldbuilding, brainstorming/outlining, writing, editing, etc)?

Writing itself, because I don't really do any of the others. I also love brainstorming with friends, but there's nothing like the satisfaction of seeing your story take shape (Especially if I daydreamed a lot about it). However, it does make me want to commit arson when it doesn't sound right (see: the source of my cannibalism fic! It was meant to be a nieyao JGY eats NMJ's heart fic, but that wasn't coming out how I wanted, so I scrapped it)

32. Do you take fic requests? Why or why not?

If someone asked me to write about a premise that I found interesting, I probably would! But I'm by no means a popular writing, mainly due to my niche interests (my wx deity au is my popular series and that's my only wx focused au, that I have lost interest in). See: suyao TPE, ruoyao ruling the world, dead dove nieyao, JGY sex issues, etc.

40. What is your favorite world that you’ve created for a fic?

When it comes to fic writing, I really don't deal in worldbuilding. Canonverse is my jam. The TPE au is just modern au focused on suyao, and the abo broodmare au, though very diferent from canon world dynamics, is also canonverse. Again, more character driven.

When it comes to my original projects, however ���� My own original world for my books is nice and complex and I cherish it very much! I do love worldbuilding

Oooh, fics focused on stupidly intense chronic pain. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE a good chronic pain fic, but I look at my chronic pain series and just euugh. My writing style was kinda weird back then, and I wasn't so deep in the JGY hole. I don't think I'll write anything focused on taht alone again

70. Are you subscribed to any writers on AO3?

I actually am not! I don't tend to subscribe to things a lot, so there's that. I am subscribed to a few fics (not a lot, since I tend to avoid reading unfinished fics), but the only one I can remember right now is Jade and Fire.
