Given what’s happened in his career in recent years,
Daniel Landlord’s statement that the 14th Inspector is ‘retired’ is probably for the best.

It doesn’t take a world class detective to figure out why Trump’s DOJ would denote the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, or why Trump would remove 17 Inspectors General, who saved Americans $91 billion last year, why they would dismantle the Kleptocracy Unit at the DOJ, why they would kneecap the Public Integrity Unit, or why they would end programs looking to stop foreign interference into American politics.
There’s a simple reason for this. Trump has, and will continue to use foreign interference and corruption to manipulate our elections, to deceive and misinform people, to politicize and divide Americans, to wear down those who care about honesty and integrity.
He has done this for the better part of a decade. Using this bully pulpit as a megaphone, projecting lies, disinformation and misinformation, while the mainstream media is too feckless and weak to point out the blatant falsities, their corporate overlords not understanding the vital role a free press plays in a free country, only focused on profit.
This plays directly into the hands of our adversaries. With a nation divided, with the inability to decipher what’s true and what isn’t, with the constant burden of fact checking and debating objective reality with those who refuse to see it, our society, our country is vulnerable. Weakened by the onslaught of corrupt practices, further straining the capacity for concern on those who would.
This is what keeps me up at night. Trump has also removed high ranking military officers. He removed the heads of the intelligence agencies, purged and stacked the DOJ, removed top law enforcement officials. Pretty much anyone who would or could hold him accountable, gone.
There are two exceptions, one being this pathetic, shameless, spineless Republican majority in the house and senate, the smallest majority since the Great Depression, all too cowardly to uphold the Constitution and adhere to their oath in fear of being primaried by the capitol of the worlds richest man, Elon Musk.
The other being that which has emboldened him to, ever so brazenly, engage in a crime spree starting 3 days before his inauguration and progressing exponentially since. The United States Supreme Court. Although my Conlaw has improved over the last few years, I am no constitutional scholar, but I do possess reading comprehension skills and the ability to think critically.
When I read: No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.
This clearly states that no one who has engaged in INSURRECTION or REBELLION and taken the an oath to uphold the Constitution can hold office, and is disqualified thereafter in doing so.
The slate of fake electors is an affront on the Constitution. Riling up his supporters with knowingly false claims of a rigged election is a slide against the Constitution and engaging in rebellion. Then telling his base to “fight like hell or you won’t have a country anymore” and sending them off to storm the capital, beat cops, and desecrate our nations most sacred place. Thats an insurrection, at minimum it’s rebellion.
Then to CONTINUOUSLY lie and whine about the 2020 election for 5 years now… It’s f*ckin exhausting…. 😑
Not only did the Supreme Court allow an insurrectionist to run and hold office in direct contrast to what the 14th amendment section 3 says, they topped it off by granting absolute immunity for actions taken in office.
This country was founded on the premise that no one is a king, no one has the power to dictate policy themselves, and that no one is above the law. It doesn’t take a constitutional scholar to understand that!
Now, just over 100 days in, we have, by insurmountable numbers, the most corrupt, criminal, lawless and unconstitutional administration to EVER occupy the executive branch.
Never. And I mean NEVER!!! Do I want to hear about Hunter Biden and his laptop, or Joe Biden and his pardons, or Obama and his tan suit, or Clinton and blowjobs, ever, EVER AGAIN from any maga or Republican for as long as this country is still a free nation or I still take breath.
At 100 days the criminality is so rampant it makes organized crime look legitimate! It’s staggering!…
The thing is. This is just setting up for what’s to come. The preparation for the real criminal acts. Just getting warmed up, testing the waters of Congress and SCOTUS, seeing exactly how for they can go before someone of consequence checks them.
There is one last line of defense. The final guardrail of our democracy still secured and bolted down.
Us
It’s not to say that it isn’t out of control already, but when it does TRULY cross that rubicon, endangering the very foundation of our country, it’s up to us to defend that which has so graciously given us the freedom and privileges we’ve enjoyed our entire existence here, and gather en mass, standing up for our nation and the Constitution. So many have given so much for us, it would be blasphemy to relinquish our rights to a second rate reality tv personality.
I believe in us. I believe in the American people. I believe in you.
🎶This land is your land, this land is my land, from California to the New York Islands, from the redwood forests, to the Gulf Stream waters, this land was made for you and me 🎶

Just compare 1st season Troy who LITERALLY told Abed "friends helps ME, I don't help them" vs 4rd season Troy who yells histerically in the middle of a convention because some random is "trying to steal his boyfriend". 😭😭😭
From an empathic point, I get why general criticism hated so much the Inspector Spacetime episode. Besides that JeffAnnie subplot and Pierce and Shirley's middest moment... Jeff was right when he said Troy has become unrecognizable because of his relationship with another man...
But, me? I'm too simple. Give me two dorks in love with each other whose don't know it yet and act ridiculous because they don't understand their feelings and I will be drawing them 14th times in a week.

Aoko x Kaito headcannons...platonic ones are very much appreciated too.
I don't usually think much about the romantic Aoko x Kaito, although I like it, I prefer them platonic, but here are both, feel free to think of the platonic ones as romantic if you want! Romantic: 1. They wear matching clothes, Kaito always complains that Aoko copies him, Aoko always defends herself saying that is not the case… Kaito is the one who copies her color to match her!
2. Kaito has painted portraits of Aoko, people are impressed when they see them, because Kaito draws Aoko in the most beautiful way he can, he wants everyone to see her. Platonic: 1. Aoko is the one who teaches Kaito how to cook. Kaito has never liked it, but Aoko tells him "You need to cook to survive, I won't be with you forever to keep you alive." And reluctantly, but agreeing with her, he learns to cook.
Aoko shares the Nakamori family recipes with him! 2. I really like the idea of them both going out to flirt with cute girls or boys, mostly helping each other get a love interest or going on double dates.
Kaito forced Aoko to learn the rose trick, and they have a whole performance together to get dates. 3. They have lightsaber fights, and act out dramatic scenes saying things like:
"I expected this from everyone, but not from you, you my sister…!"
"This is the end bro, I always hated you."
Then the inspector shows up, and says:
"Children, dinner is ready, come eat."
Then they run and push each other, yes, they are 17 years old.
4. I really like the idea of these two going on road trips, I feel like while Kaito drives, he and Aoko sing and "dance" to 80s songs.
5. Kaito played with Aoko with dolls, he was embarrassed, but he had a lot of fun. 6. Since Aoko is quite insecure about herself, I like to think that Kaito dresses like her and fixes himself up so that she can see herself the way he sees her. 7. They braid each other's hair. Kaito wears a wig! 8. Aoko has named some of Kaito's pigeons. 9. Aoko once shot an arrow at Kaito on Valentine's Day. (I have the headcanon that she practices archery, I don't know, it just came out of nowhere.)
Aoko was crying desperately screaming, "You're going to lose your arm, you're going to lose your arm!"
And all Kaito said to try to calm her down was, "That was close, any closer and you'd have my heart!"
Aoko cried more. Kaito started to panic. It was a Valentine's Day joke, it didn't come out well.
And yes, I really like the idea that Kaito has a bad time on February 14th. 10. After meeting Akako, they get a little (a lot) carried away on Halloween, creating some pretty convincing scary costumes full of wounds, both seeking Akako's approving opinion.
11. I have this idea about Aoko as a trans man in my head, I hope to turn it into a story someday, but I'll tell you about it.
When Aoko comes out to Kaito, he starts discreetly leaving men's fashion magazines in Aoko's room.
He also offers his house if things don't work out when he comes out to he parents and makes it clear that they are friends no matter what.
I also like to think that Kaito and Hakuba end up in the school principal's office because they got into a fight over defending Aoko (Aoi), then they get scolded by him, but they all hug each other because he appreciates how much they care.

Angeli et Daemones
Summary:
You are part of the Corps of Gendarmerie, working alongside your father, Inspector Ernesto Olivetti. You also have a secret relationship with your childhood friend, the Camerlengo Patrick McKenna.
However, when the Vatican is under attack by shadows of the past, you are paired with Professor Robert Langdon to save the kidnapped Preferiti and, subsequently, the Vatican City itself.
Will you manage to save the city and the Catholic Church? Or will you betray everything you knew for the man who had captured your heart for so long?
Pairing: Patrick McKenna x Fem!Reader Chapter Warning: None
Previous - Chapter 1 Next - Chapter 3
Chapter 2
The days passed, and the news of the Pope's death reached every corner of the world. People posted stories on social media and wrote letters, and the news channels were relentless.
The Cardinals started arriving by the 12th day after the Pope’s death, and that meant more job for you and your father, considering all the foreign security that had followed the Holy Father's.
If that was not all, the people that flooded the city for the event... a security disaster.
And if that was not all you had to deal with, not adding a grieving Patrick that seemed to withhold something from you, something new was added to the equation, not long after.
By the 13th day, a single day before the Conclave would start, Richter received a call from CERN from Italian Professor and Scientist Vittoria Vetra, who was part of a secret, highly secure project involving antimatter.
A project that became successful and was now... missing.
And if that was not enough, the four Preferiti who would be the best Pope candidates were kidnapped on the same day from different locations.
Leaving the Swiss Guard and the Gendarmerie in utter chaos.
By the 14th day, you were in a meeting with your father, Richter, and the highest-class officers from the two security forces.
The room was loud, everyone arguing and pointing fingers at who was at fault for the kidnappings.
As the sole woman in the room, you had learnt not to participate in their aggressive rantings but to merely observe their equally aggressive hand gestures as they spoke.
Your father, sitting by your side, was rubbing his temples as he felt a migraine forming from all the shouting.
Italian could be such a beautiful language and yet so damn tiring when it was used in an argument.
You glanced towards the door, seeing Richter's right hand, Lieutenant Chartrand. You knew him quite well, being the only one who wished to work with you when you first started.
He did not mind that you were a woman, though sometimes he did not hide his thoughts from being visible on his face.
His biggest flaw was that he was a vivid smoker, which you disliked. After spending time with him, you often complained when your clothes smelled like cigarettes. Patrick did not like it either, or him in general, though he expressed his thoughts and opinions in secret when it was just the two of you.
Ironically, you never questioned those quick flashes of jealousy that would sprout like hot water geysers, disappearing equally fast. You find it rather amusing, always glad to draw a more vivid and loud reaction from him. And if anyone ever dared to question... well, you were childhood friends who said he could not defend you under the innocence of 'friendship.'
A poetic Shakespearean irony when love and personal deep feelings were the root of it all.
Your gaze met Chartrand's, and neither of you had to say anything to know that you were getting rather tired of this ridiculous argument and merely wished to do your job. Of course, it would not be the first time, but that did not mean it ever became more tolerable.
Plus, you could always spend your time doing different things rather than listening to older people compete to see who could shout the loudest, thus proving that the loudest man was right.
Suddenly, the door to the room was pushed open, and someone rushed inside. The agent had a folded paper in one hand and a tape in the other.
"Commander," he said in Italian, your native language. "We got news of the Prefereti," he continued, and you noticed the faint shake of his hands and the beads of sweat that had formed by the base of his hairline.
Something was fishy, your guts warned you. The man's reaction was suspicious, and your eyes locked on the folded paper. Under the room's bright lights, you saw the shade of what you assumed to be black letters, speculating that something was written on it.
The agent approached his boss and whispered something in his ear before passing the paper. Richter unfolded it, and he frowned before folding it again.
"Everyone dismissed," he said in his usual tone, giving nothing away about what he saw on that paper.
You exchanged a look with your father as you both stood up. Sharing similar thoughts, you stayed back and chose to be the last ones to leave, hoping to perhaps fish something out of him. As if expecting such a bold move from the two of you, Richter stopped you before you could do or say anything.
"You two come with me," Richter said and led you towards his private office.
It was common for your father to stay behind or talk privately with him. The Swiss Guard were responsible for the overall safety of the Pope, the Cardinals and so on.
The Gendarmerie, on the other hand, was more focused on Vatican City and the Pope's safety abroad, and your father acted as his personal bodyguard in foreign events. Of course, being his daughter and having nowhere to leave you, you joined him, thus having this little special privilege.
Thus, when you were pulled into the room along with Chartrand, you realised something was wrong, and it had to do with the dead Pope or the perfereti.
"Take a look at this," Richter said, passing your father the folded paper.
Your father unfolded it, and you had to tiptoe and peek over his hand. You blinked thrice to ensure you were not imagining things.
The word Illuminati was in the middle of the page in an old and delicate medieval English font. The ink had soaked through the page, forever marking it, just as the group had marked the history of the Catholic Church.
Your father handed you the paper, and you took a step to the side, tilting it so Chartrand could see it.
His expression was no different from that of the commander. "A prank," he commented.
"It was faxed to us just now. Someone is playing a joke," Richter said, clearly not believing it.
But you were not so sure. "How can you be so sure, Commander?" You questioned, earning a glare from him.
"The Illuminati do not exist. This is a faux, by some... young gangster who thinks he is funny."
"Then what's in the tape?" You questioned, glancing at the tape still in the Commander’s hands.
He failed miserably, whether he had forgotten it or tried not to show it to you.
Richter clenched his jaw and pressed a button. His private little TV emerged from a secret compartment on his desk. He put the tape in the special machine while you all moved around him.
A video started to play, a recording of a dimly lit room. The video lacked colour and had a blue hue.
There were four old men, some in their sixties, the others in their seventies, filmed in dim light behind bars in a dank, dungeon-like space. A quick, fleeting glance at them, you can see familiar faces, quickly realising who these men are.
A lightly accented voice spoke in English from behind the camera.
"We will destroy your four pillars... brand your preferiti and sacrifice them on the altars of science... and then bring your church down upon you. Vatican City will be consumed by light. A shining star at the end of the Path of Illumination."
Your father was the first to do his cross as the video ended, a quick glimpse of a vial with a light in the centre. It wouldn't be a far shot if this was the stolen antimatter Dr. Vetra talked about, you thought, and looked at the men around you.
"This doesn't sound like a prank to me," you voiced your thoughts.
"Commander," Lieutenant Chartrand turned to the man in charge. "What do we do?"
Richter thought for a few seconds. "We start the searches. We need to find the prefereti and soon."
Your father, the voice of reason, joined. "They could be everywhere in the Vatican, and our forces are already spread thin with the incoming Conclave."
"We don't have to search the whole city just to find the clues," you pointed out, earning their attention.
"What clues?" Richter questioned, arching an eyebrow.
"In the video. There are clearly clues, just like the Illuminati used to live for their followers," as you talked, you shook your hands motioning to the frozen video. "They did not just send it to intimidate us. They try to taunt and mess with us, using the same tactic they used against the church back then."
Your words put them into thought.
You had studied human psychology and profiling as a hobby, since most of your time and focus were on the police force. But you were good at it, effectively using it to hunt down criminals and bigger threats.
Plus, you do have an obsession with Catholic history, and thanks to Patrick and the Pope, you had full access to the Vatican Archives. Unfortunately, you did not have the time to study them all properly.
Thus, your knowledge of them was incomplete. But the Illuminati part was one of the first you read with interest, memorising as much as possible about it. The others could play it ignorant, like the church was used to being, but you refused to follow that path.
Thankfully, Patrick agreed with you on such matters and became your study companion on the matter. With him present, no one could stop you from snooping on all kinds of private and restricted material, seeing the Church and its bloody history for what they truly were.
Yet, such revelations never pushed you away from the faith—away from Jesus Christ. Instead, they brought you even closer as you had a deeper understanding of how everything works in the world. If only the others could see it that way, but unfortunately for you, you were surrounded by rather closed-minded people.
"This is ridiculous," Richter commented, as per usual, not a big believer. "Say this was true...How do we find those... clues? You will find them?"
You did not answer, for you knew you couldn't. You had no training on that, no true specialisation; only a simple interest.
And Rochter knew it. He knew it just like he knew more about you than you thought he did. And he always enjoyed reminding you of your weakness, never liking the idea of a woman in the police force.
"Thought as much," he smirked.
Something clicked in your mind, and you were determined to prove him wrong and wipe that sexist smirk off his rather punchable face. "Not me, but him!" You exclaimed and moved to grab your small backpack.
When you were called into this meeting with your father, you were on your way to the police station to change and help your colleagues. Your little backpack, which contained snacks, your phone, a little bit of makeup, and, of course, your favourite book, was with you.
You grabbed the book and showed it to the men, the familiar cover making the Commander roll his eyes.
You pointed out, proudly holding his book on the Illuminati. "Professor Langdon can. He studied them better than any of us and can easily decipher symbols and secrets."
Commander Richter pulled a face, the name not a happy one. The persistent professor had contacted him many times, requesting access to the archives to finish his second book on the Illuminati.
Each attempt was turned down, not because they did not want to give him access, but because Professor Langdon did not have the best relations with the Catholic Church.
Not after his latest adventures in Paris with the Priory of Sion, which put him on the Church's blacklist. And yes, the proud Chatholic Church did have a blacklist; a rather long one.
"Professor Langdon has no interest in this. He is opposing the tutoring of Christ and this church. Evident by his attempts to gain access to the archives." The commander said, putting his foot down.
Unfortunately for him, you had inherited your mother's stubbornness and had learnt not to let men intimidate you. "The lives of the perfereti are at stake, Commander," you reminded him as you marched forward until you stood before him. "And right now, you are the only one who can save them. Or you can keep this refusal and have their blood stain your hands."
Chartrand and your father held their breaths, waiting to see if Richter would snap. The commander was known for his lack of patience and rather volatile temper.
No one, almost, dared to speak to him that way, and if that were any other case, perhaps you wouldn't either.
But right now, lives were at stake—holy lives that mattered more than yours or anyone else's. The perfect men you would vote for, the perfect candidates to lead the Church of Christ.
They were men who had devoted their lives to the Church and Christ's tutoring. They deserved to be saved, or at least to be attempted to be saved.
Not let them die because of personal petty feelings.
As a commander of such a powerful force, Richter should never let his emotions affect his judgment. And he knew that very well.
Rochter hated your guts, that was evident, but at that moment, he had to admit that you were right. Of course, he would not just openly admit it to you.
No, he was too petty to do that.
But he could still agree with you, partially. "Fine. Bring in this Symbologist. But he is your responsibility," he said and nodded at your father.
Without another word, the Commander left the room, and Chartrand, like the obedient dog he was, followed suit.
Only once, when he was gone and there was only your father and you in your room, did you exhale and pass a hand through your hair.
"Never thought I would see the day someone stood up to him," your father commented, his prideful smile contagious.
"Let alone a woman," you added, always feeling nice seeing the pride in your father's dark eyes.
He had always been proud of you since the day you were a child. And his pride only grew as you stood by his side in the graveyard while the coffin of your mother was lowered.
That day, you did not shed a tear, unlike him, and made sure to look after him in the first few days of your mother's passing. You were merely eight but knew you had to be strong for him and yourself.
And when your father recovered, he saw the true strength and resilience you had within you. He recognised it truly and had been supporting you ever since.
He knew you would make a difference one day, and he could not wait to be present when this happened.
"Question is, who do we send to fetch him and when?" You looked at your father, putting him into thought.
The idea of bringing Langdon was good, but you all failed to think of the steps to execute that idea. Thankfully, your father was quick to adapt in such situations.
"Claudio Vincenzo," he suggested after a momentary thought.
You frowned. "Isn't he on vacation in New York?"
"Not anymore," he grabbed his phone, getting the station on the line. Someone had to voice him and arrange a private jet for him.

In a shocking development that has upended the investigation into last month's deadly Valentine's Day bombing at the Grand Royale Casino, police have received a disturbing video confession from the alleged perpetrator before he took his own life.
Douglas Mercer, 32, a former employee of the Grand Royale, claimed sole responsibility for the February 14th explosion that killed Min-ho "The Ghost" Kang and injured twelve others, including Thomas Kang, who remains in critical condition at Angel's Rest Medical Center. "I want to be clear that I acted entirely alone," Mercer stated in the video obtained by authorities yesterday. "The Onyx Circuit had nothing to do with this attack or the January incident. I stole their calling cards and planted them at the scene to make my actions seem part of something bigger." The video, which ends with Mercer fatally shooting himself, was delivered anonymously to the Devil's Junction Police Department headquarters. Chief Inspector Raymond Wells confirmed the authenticity of the footage at an emergency press conference late last night. "We have verified Mr. Mercer's identity and timeline through casino employment records and security footage," Wells stated. "Forensic analysis of the video indicates it was recorded approximately 48 hours before its delivery to our department." According to police sources, Mercer's apartment contained bomb-making materials matching those used in the Grand Royale attack, along with detailed plans of the casino's layout and security systems. Employment records show Mercer worked as a waiter at the high-roller section of the casino for five months before the explosion. In the video, Mercer claimed he targeted Min-ho Kang specifically because of the Kang family's control over underground fighting rings, which he blamed for his brother's death three years ago. "I wanted them to feel the pain I felt," Mercer said in the recording. "I used the Onyx Circuit's reputation to amplify my message."

There’s little reason to believe Mona Virtue’s claim that the 14th Inspector took on the 10th Inspector’s appearance simply for him to find his way home.
There are many other reasons he might have revisited his 10th incarnation, such as unfinished business (even though he said he was ‘ready to go’), the trauma he’d undergone in his 13th incarnation, or even simply wanting to revisit old mates.

Police Constable Norwell Roberts aka Norwell Gumbs, on point duty near Charing Cross station, 8th August 1968. Having joined the Met in 1967 Norwell went on to serve as a Detective Sergeant and retired in 1997 with 30 years service.
During his career, he was considered to be the first black police officer in London, although it was later discovered that he had been preceded by Robert Brandford who had ultimately been promoted to Superintendent in Victorian times.
Little is known about Brandford, and no photographs of him exist. It is known that he was accepted as a Constable in London on 24th September 1838, and was posted to Stone's End Police Station, near Borough High Street. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1846, and then inspector in 1851. By 1856 he was recorded as Superintendent of M Division, covering what is now Southwark. He passed away on 14th August 1869 aged 51 years.

On May 28th 1887, tragedy struck when 73 miners were killed in a firedamp explosion at Udston Colliery, Lanarkshire.
Keir Hardie, then Secretary of the Scottish Miners’ Federation, denounced the deaths as murder a few days later.
The Scottish Mining Website shows the astonishing fact that from 1799 to 1982, there was not a single year that did not see a fatality connected with coal mining.
The reports of the disasters are all available to read online once you root around a little, this is the original report by Ralph Moore, HM Inspector of Mines:
“On Saturday morning, the 28th May, about five minutes past nine, a disastrous explosion took place at this colliery, causing the death of 73 persons. One hundred and eighty-four men had descended the pit that morning, and when the explosion occurred they were all there except two who had ascended. Measures were at once taken for the relief of those underground and before 3 o’clock pm all the men in the Ell and Main Coals were got out, and it was found that the workings in these seams were not damaged, but that the explosion had occurred in the Splint Coal.
“Five of the men in the Main Coal were killed by choke-damp which came up from the Splint Coal, and it was feared that the 71 persons who were in that seam were all dead.
“Preparations were at once made for ventilating and exploring the Splint Coal workings, and in about 45 hours after the explosion they had all been explored and all the bodies removed, with the exception of seven which were under falls of roof. The last of these was recovered on the 14th of June.
“Two men were found alive within 30 yards of the bottom of No 2 pit and are now recovering. All of the others were dead. Dr Robertson, Hamilton, who examined the bodies, certifies that 53 were burned, and 20 were suffocated.”
The disaster devastated families for miles around. Richard Cook, 50, and his two sons, James 17, and Thomas, 20, were all killed, as were several sets of brothers such as Thomas and William Dennistoun, Thomas and Walter Penman, John and George Harkness, and David and James Crichton. The youngest to die was 13-year-old David Shanks whose father, also David, was also killed the eldest 55, this was our second worst mining disaster.
The pics are memorials at Priestknowe Roundabout, East Kilbride and South Lanarkshire Council Offices, Brandon Gate, Brandon Street, Hamilton.

‘Life-threatening cold’ hits parts of US following deadly weekend flooding (AP) Harsh cold descended on the nation’s midsection Monday as a polar vortex gripped the Rockies and Northern Plains on the heels of weekend storms that pummeled the Eastern U.S. with floods, killing at least 14 people. The National Weather Service warned of “life-threatening cold” as wind chills dropped to minus 60 Fahrenheit (minus 51 Celsius) in parts of North Dakota on Monday and minus 50 F (minus 46 C) in parts of Montana. Extreme cold warnings were issued for an 11-state swath of the U.S. stretching from the Canadian border to Oklahoma and central Texas, where the Arctic front was expected to bring near-record cold temperatures and wind chills in the single digits by midweek.
Top Social Security Official Leaves After Musk Team Seeks Data Access (NYT) The top official at the Social Security Administration stepped down this weekend after members of Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency sought access to sensitive personal data about millions of Americans held by the agency, according to people familiar with the matter. The resignation of Michelle King, the acting commissioner, is the latest abrupt departure of a senior federal official who refused to provide Mr. Musk’s lieutenants with access to closely held data. Mr. Musk’s team has been embedding with agencies across the federal government and seeking access to private data as part of what it has said is an effort to root out fraud and waste. Social Security payments account for about $1.5 trillion, or a fifth, of annual federal spending in the United States. President Trump has pledged not to enact cuts to the program’s retirement benefits, but he has indicated that he is willing to look for ways to cut wasteful or improper spending from the retirement program that pays benefits to millions of Americans. An audit produced by the Social Security Administration’s inspector general last year found that from 2015 to 2022, the agency paid almost $8.6 trillion in benefits and made approximately $71.8 billion, or less than 1 percent, in improper payments that usually involved recipients getting too much money.
So far, mass deportation has been more rhetoric than reality (Economist) Three days after Donald Trump became president, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raided the Ocean Seafood Gourmet Market and Depot in Newark’s Ironbound district. ICE interrogated workers, including an American citizen, before making three arrests. Can Mr Trump keep his promise to reduce America’s unauthorised population, which is estimated to be as high as 13m? Storming markets to arrest three people at a time (two of whom, in this case, were released on bond) is not a promising path. Following Mr Trump’s inauguration, ICE reported daily arrests ranging from 286 to 1,179. But sustaining a rate of a thousand arrests per day will be difficult. He vowed to target migrants with criminal convictions or criminal charges. But it is clear that, as in Newark, migrants without criminal histories are being rounded up. According to data released on February 14th, this group makes up 14% of all those detained. The majority of arrests happen at the border. Such detentions are easier and cheaper but there are now fewer unauthorised immigrants to catch there. The administration will need to do a lot more if it is to meet its campaign rhetoric of deporting over 10m people.
Rio de Janeiro’s hottest day in at least a decade sends residents to the beach (AP) Rio de Janeiro recorded its hottest day in at least a decade when temperatures reached 44 degrees Celsius (111 F) on Monday as residents flocked to the ocean to try to cool off. It was the highest temperature since the southeastern Brazilian city started a climate alert system just over 10 years ago. The second-highest was 43.8°C in November 2023. City officials issued an alert for extreme heat for the coming days, set up hydration stations and prepared the public health system to handle an increase in heat-related cases.
Argentine judge investigates fraud case against President Milei over crypto promotion (AP) A judge in Argentina was selected Monday to investigate allegations of fraud against President Javier Milei for his brief promotion of a cryptocurrency whose value collapsed within hours of its launch last week. Milei distanced himself from the scandal and said he acted in good faith. Milei and his office denied involvement with creators of the $LIBRA cryptocurrency, saying he initially drew attention to it Friday as an entrepreneurial project that might benefit Argentina but learned more about it later and then withdrew his support. It enjoyed a brief spike in value above $4 billion in market capitalization, although its value began to decline amid comments of critics that it could be a scam. Milei deleted the post a few hours later as the value of the cryptocurrency was collapsing in a downturn that caused millions of dollars in losses to many of its new investors.
A Meeting in Riyadh (Foreign Policy) Top U.S. and Russian officials convened in the Saudi capital of Riyadh on Tuesday to discuss improving bilateral relations and negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine. The four-and-a-half-hour meeting marked the most extensive contact between the two adversaries since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, and it signified a stark departure from a U.S. foreign policy that has, until now, sought to isolate the Kremlin on the world stage. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told The Associated Press on Tuesday after the meeting that both sides had agreed to pursue three key goals: restore staffing at their embassies in Moscow and Washington, explore opportunities for economic cooperation, and create teams for peace talks. Notably, no Ukrainian representatives were present in Riyadh. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that Kyiv would not accept any outcome from this week’s talks since Ukraine was not invited to attend. Kyiv’s allies have expressed concern that they, too, are being sidelined. “There will be no peace in Ukraine without Ukraine or Europe,” Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said.
Chinese navy helicopter flies within 10 feet of Philippine patrol plane over disputed shoal (AP) Chinese navy helicopter flew within 10 feet (3 meters) of a Philippine patrol plane on Tuesday in a disputed area of the South China Sea, prompting the Filipino pilot to warn by radio: “You are flying too close, you are very dangerous.” The Chinese helicopter was attempting to force a Cessna Caravan turboprop plane belonging to the Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources out of what China claims is its airspace over the hotly disputed Scarborough Shoal off the northwestern Philippines. An Associated Press journalist and other invited foreign media on the plane witnessed the tense 30-minute standoff as the Philippine plane pressed on with its low-altitude patrol around Scarborough. Chinese officials did not immediately comment on the incident, but in past encounters they have steadfastly asserted China’s sovereign rights over the Scarborough and surrounding waters and warned that its forces would protect the country’s territorial interests at all costs.
Trump wants Greenland and Gaza. That might embolden China on Taiwan. (Washington Post) President Donald Trump has spent his first few weeks in the White House talking about land deals like the real estate developer he once was. He has threatened to annex Greenland—refusing to rule out military force to do so—and has suggested using “economic force” to make Canada the 51st American state. He has repeatedly talked about taking over the Gaza Strip—referring to the area as the “Riviera of the Middle East”—and his envoys are trying to broker a deal with Russia that could cost Ukraine some of its land. This transactional approach is unnerving many in Taiwan, who fear it will embolden Chinese leader Xi Jinping to press ahead with his plans for “reunification” with Taiwan, an island democracy of 23 million people that has never been ruled by the Chinese Communist Party. Some fear Trump and Xi might even use Taiwan as a bargaining chip in a trade deal. Over the past three years, Beijing has dramatically stepped up military intimidation of Taiwan, sending rising numbers of warplanes and navy ships to probe the island’s defenses. This effort has only intensified since Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing considers a “dangerous separatist,” became president in May. This is fueling fears in Taiwan that Xi might try to launch a military invasion of the island—using the same justification that Trump uses when talking about Greenland, for example—and making it more difficult for Washington to credibly object.
Villagers in southern Lebanon prepare to return home as Israeli army withdraws under ceasefire deal (AP) Israeli forces withdrew from border villages in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, under a deadline spelled out in a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement that ended the latest Israel-Hezbollah war. The Israeli troops, however, have remained in five strategic overlook points inside Lebanon—a sore point with Lebanese officials and Hezbollah. Lebanese soldiers moved into the areas from where the Israeli troops pulled out and began clearing roadblocks set up by Israeli forces and checking for unexploded ordnance. They blocked the main road leading to the villages, preventing anyone from entering while the military was looking for any explosives left behind. Most of the villages waited by the roadside for permission to go and check on their homes but some pushed aside the roadblocks to march in. Elsewhere, the army allowed the residents to enter. Many of their houses were demolished during the more than year-long conflict or in the two months after November’s ceasefire agreement, when Israeli forces were still occupying the area.
Rwanda-backed M23 rebels tighten their grip on second major city in eastern Congo (AP) Rwanda-backed rebels tightened their grip on Bukavu on Monday, a day after seizing the second major city in eastern Congo whose residents appeared resigned to their fate under the new rulers. On Sunday, M23 rebels captured the city of 1.3 million people after it was abandoned by Congolese forces. Bukavu lies 63 miles (101 kilometers) south of Goma, which was captured by the rebels in late January. As the rebels made their way into Bukavu, its streets were flooded by residents attempting to leave and looters filling flour sacks with what they could find. On Monday morning, people gradually started coming out again while the rebels patrolled major intersections in the city. “Now we thank God that the situation is OK, even if we don’t know what’s coming. Whatever happens, we will live with it,” David Munyaga, a resident of Bukavu, said.
Vatican says Pope Francis has pneumonia in both lungs (NCR) Pope Francis has been diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs and his latest laboratory tests and chest X-rays continue to reveal a "complex" medical picture, according to a Feb. 18 Vatican statement. The statement noted that the 88-year-old pontiff is in a good mood. The pope also expressed his gratitude for the prayers of support, as well as for some drawings and cards he received from children in the hospital's pediatric oncology unit.
New Zealand's 'Everyone Must Go' tourism campaign mocked by locals (NBC News) New Zealand kicked off its “Everyone Must Go” tourism campaign on Sunday in the hopes of restoring visitor numbers to pre-COVID-19 levels. “What this Tourism New Zealand campaign says to our Aussie mates is that we’re open for business, there are some great deals on, and we’d love to see you soon,” Tourism Minister Louise Upston said. But some have likened the slogan to a clearance sale, bodily functions, and even emigration rates at a time when Kiwis are leaving the country in record numbers.
