Katrin - an early 1870s evening dress
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And yet another 1870s dress. No, this isn't the 200 followers gift. That one is much smaller and yet I'm procrastinating it. This is just your regular old fanciful late Victorian ballgown, featuring lots of pastels and eye strain-level aniline dyes. To give it one of my patented year ranges: it could work between the years 1868 and 1874.

"I will dip my pen in my own blood if I choose!" (Vendetta; or, the Story of One Forgotten – Marie Corelli, 1886)
i'm not going to lie to you all. this is my least favorite decade of the 1800s... lets get this over with.
also, yes, i know that i used @vintagesimstress's 1799 winter wear, but it reminded me a lot of this tea dress dated from the 1880s, and i wanted to use it! also also, yeah this is the second post today. i haven't burned out on this project yet but lord knows.
so, the 1880s. you see bustles a lot in this decade, as well as a lot of hats over updos. hair was typically pulled into an updo due to the prevalence of high necklines. not fun fact: many bird species became endangered in the 1880s and 1890s due to the demand for feathers for hats. sleeves stayed close to the arms, but would begin to puff as the decade went on. the bustle hit it's peak in the middle of the decade, much like hoops did in the 1860s. as the bustle shrunk, the hemline of the skirt began to widen into the bell shape that is most associated with the late victorian years.

Favorite Movie Costumes (pt. 1)
Recently got the line-up-your-toys urge to list and discuss my favorite tv and movie costumes-- my favorites are many and tumblr's image limit is low, so I'm not sure how many posts this'll eventually spread to, but here's the first crop.
The Queen's red gown - The Brother's Grimm
I don't think anyone on earth wanted to love this movie more than I did when it came out-- sadly, the film itself was generally a letdown. However, its costumes absolutely delivered, which should come as no surprise since they were designed by Gabriella Pescucci. The costumes for Monica Belluci's queen are my favorites of all, but this piece, the one she wears for most of the movie, may be my favorite costume of all time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The costume has several iterations; it's paired most prominently with her enormous horned headdress (my fave), but she also wears it with a more delicate tiara.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marianne de Morangias' red riding habit - Brotherhood of the Wolf
Although Brotherhood of the Wolf is far from a good movie, I have a terrible soft spot for it, which is mostly due to its wonderful costumes, including a crowd of hunting costumes throughout, none more gorgeous than the one Marianne's debuts during the film's first hunt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I probably owe my love of riding habits to American Girl's Felicity and her swoon-worthy green velvet habit-- they are sadly underused in movies (meanwhile Marianne not only wears this red habit, but also shows off an equally beautiful green one later.)
Tumblr media
Christine Daae's masquerade dress - The Phantom of the Opera
Fun fact, I watched this movie as a teenager (after falling in with the inescapable junior high theater nerd crowd, who tried unsuccessfully to use this as a gateway drug to getting me hooked on musicals), then forgot about the vast majority of the costumes, and stumbled upon it again years later without realizing it was from a movie and completely fell in love with it.
Tumblr media
I'm very fond of the early 1870s silhouette in general, long trains in particular, and the back of this one is what really sold me. The frothy layers of chiffon?? the flowers?? the graceful tiered bustle?? Obsessed. (Another fun fact, this is one of the references I always bring up when discussing potential wedding dresses.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Imogen Spurnrose's red ensemble - Carnival Row
Tumblr media
I know, another red velvet number ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Imogen's wardrobe is full of lovely quasi-Victorian pieces, but this one had me GASPING when it came on screen. These pictures do not do the color or vibrancy of that jacket justice!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Geilis Duncan's white ballgown - Outlander
I'm usually not a fan of stripped down historical styles, especially ones this anachronistic, but something about the minimalist design of this dress just charmed me.
Tumblr media
It reminds of in some way of artistic undress in 17th century portraits, and the lightness of the colors and material has this clean, airy, almost White Lady quality to it, and the simplicity and limited accessorizing really brings out the period silhouette. (Also I adore lover's eyes).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vanessa Ives' lace blouse - Penny Dreadful
Vanessa has a gorgeous wardrobe (Gabriella Pescucci hitting it out of the park again) containing a number of delicate black and white blouses, but this one is my favorite.
Tumblr media
The design is not that complex, but the wealth of tiny details, especially the petal shaped blackworked collar and cuffs, give it a huge visual punch; paired with the decorative belt and beautiful black skirt it's a very unique look that shows off some of the most beautiful elements of the period (last photo courtesy @periodcostumefantasylover)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lorna's church dress - Lorna Doone
YES another red number. And what a red!! This miniseries is so obscure I had to do my own (butt ugly) screencaps off Youtube, but despite being a fairly modest production, they do some nice 17th century looks in it.
Tumblr media
This dress is glimpsed for a moment as Lorna catches sight of her separated lover through the crowd-- very dramatic, but unfortunately it means getting a good look at the beautiful dress is hard, but I did my best: here's the actual scene, if you want a better look (and I'd recommend the series, too!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Virginia Wilson's Worth dress - 1899
Big shock, the replica House of Worth dress made it in *Oprah shrug* I've adored the original dress for years, so I went nuts seeing it on the show! On top of just top tier everything, the costuming on 1899 was great, and the fact that they decided to throw this dress in was just the cherry on top.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are some minimal differences between this dress and its inspiration, most notably the change in pattern-- Virginia's dress not only incorporates the alchemical logo like all the rest of the characters, but the rounded edges in the original are all made jagged to match it, as you can really see in the last photo.

---- on to part 2!

I'm laughing because three of our DRESSMAKING PATTERNS were listed as 'sexually explicit' by tumblr. That's being fixed now. So please welcome back one 1870s ballgown pattern, one 1920s corset pattern, and I think another late teens sports dress? I've forgotten as I was in too much shock lol...
edit: it was a knitting apron they blocked xD

Almost forgot to put this one up here!
More Love Nikki nation swaps, couples this time.
Details/art musings/cultural influences under the cut:
Nikkimi are Pigeon, stylized late 1860s/early 1870s; Nikki’s wearing a ballgown and Kimi’s in a riding habit, but hey, it’s Miraland.
Louie/Lunar, being from different nations, swap with each other.  Louie has elements of the Ming Dynasty Jinyiwei, but it’s extremely stylized, while Lunar is just wearing a fancy long coat (and maybe, in this AU, body armor!)
Shade/Orlando are Wasteland, but while Orlando’s in a color-swapped 16th century Janissary uniform, Shade (deliberately) draws more influence from Morrigan in Dragon Age than any real-world culture.
YueZhu are North; not much to say here other than that they might have my favorite pose of the lot.
Jinjin/Lizi in Apple school uniforms was one of the first ideas I came up with; again, not much to say.
MingZhu follow my trend of “take the dark tragedy, make it Lilith;” Ming Shuiyuan’s dress translated over very easily, and I quite like Zhu Yuxian’s Evil Disney Prince vibe.
Royce/Neva are Ruin; Neva as one of Ruin’s classic tragic robot girls was another of the first ideas to hit me.  Royce’s pose used to be even worse; at least I fixed the tiny yaoi head he had initially, but I may have gone too far in the other direction.  At least Neva looks nice.
Finally, Nidhogg/Yvette are Cloud, early Tang dynasty style (again, heavily stylized).  I went more for colors and Vibes on this one.

Costume friends, I need advice - what would have been more correct to wear to the opera in the late 1870s, a dinner dress or a ballgown? I’m not sure what bodice to make

Note
If you could choose only one fashion trend from any era in history to make popular again, what style would you choose and why?
It can’t be a coincidence that society began to decline when puffy skirts and ballgowns so big they could not fit in a Ford Kia began to disappear. That’s what I want back. I’m thinking like late 18th century or maybe like 1850′s-1870′s? I want tight bodices that strangle boobs and skirts so big they are impractical for day-to-day life, so the only alternative is to just lounge around looking like a decadent vision of silks and taffeta and lace and velvet. Also like, those off shoulder sleeves Victorian dresses had, whose only purpose was to attract vampires. We should have those too.

I'm making an 1870s steampunk peacock ballgown. I have the chemise and drawers finished. My next step will be the corset. Which I have a pattern for. I just need to adjust it to fit me (it was taken from an antique corset from that era and it's too small for me).

Years of Dresses: 1872
Credit and Image Descriptions below the Cut.
All images are from the MET
The first image is a French cotton daydress which shows a  “clear revival of eighteenth–century aesthetic sensibilites.”
Next is a ballgown from the French House of Worth, and has recreated Middle Eastern enamels. According the the MET description, “This gown was worn by Mrs. William De Forest Manice, the donor's grandmother, at both the French and English courts during the reigns of Napoleon III and Queen Victoria. When worn on such occasions, the dress had a detachable brocade train, since destroyed.”
The purple gown is another associated with the House of Worth.
The final dress is an American half-mourning gown. An inscription on the bodice describes it as being designed by “Cunningham."

SHADOW AND BONE REVIEW: EP 5
On this episode: Svengoolie's troupe of performers, 1870s ballgowns except not, terrible plans that aren't sneaky at all, Mr. Darcy Darkling, and I need to take a minute over this one particular moment or I may never recover.
- Why does the leader of this performance group remind me of Svengoolie??? He’s got the hair the hat and the mustache. Do you guys know him? Maybe this is just a Chicago thing.
Tumblr media
- More disguises for Kaz, he must be enjoying all this so much
- A WILD DAVID APPEARS! Um he is lovely, he can stay.
- Wahhhhhh Kaz is in pain bc of his leg, this hurts me emotionally and physically. Let him rest. One day. One day in 10 years maybe he will allow himself a rest.
- Full disclosure, I don’t remember a whole lot from the S&B books (only read them 1.5 times) but I remember butter week! Butter week is a wonderful thing.
- Aww this little carnival looks fun, I want to go. Reminds me of the Renaissance Faire.
- So... you’re just gonna grab Alina and walk away with her? What are you on about Kaz, that's the dumbest plan I've ever heard. There’s got to be something more sneaky to this.
- Arken. Who tf are you even. What are you doing here. What is going on here. I don’t get this plan at all.
- AlinaAAaAa! I thought her and the Darkling's whole deal would be more uncomfortable to watch but it isn't too bad. Good. I’m glad. Ok she kissed HIM and I think that made the difference. Did it happen that way in the book? I don't even remember. It’s still kind of weird but not AS weird.
- Ahahaha Jesper you’re such a flirt ahahahaha omg. I feel like... they might be playing him TOO MUCH for comic relief *dodges bullets*
- "She’s SULI." YES THE TRUE ZOYA COMES OUT
- I’m trying to historically place these fete costumes but I just cannot right now, I will need to have a think on this later. They look kind of 1870s to me but the necklines are weird and the fabric is wrong, but hey this is fantasy so it can really be whatever it wants. The thing I DO like about the costumes is all the embroidery tho, especially on all the keftas. I was kinda meh on these hair ornaments but I really like Alina’s
- Ah yes, Mr Darcy Darkling enters the ballroom and sneers at all the peasants.
- Alina you look so pretty! The black fur in her collar is *CHEF KISS*
- No wait, Inej in her oprichniki uniform is superior. Sorry, only Inej supremacy here. And actually sorry to you too Darkling, but Kaz has surpassed you as the most moody, miserable one in the room. Kaz and the Darkling even being IN the same room is just... blowing my mind, I’m gonna need a second here.
- Alina’s light-bending was beautiful. But what got me, what really got me was, of course, Inej saying Sankta Alina. Obvi this didn’t happen in the books, BUT Inej seeing her saint made me almost tear up. Alina has always been a very important person to her and Amita played this beautifully, where are my tissues
- get outa here Dima hahahahahaa
- How do you know it’s the right stag? Well it’s like a 50 point stag for one, and it hasn’t been mounted on anyone’s wall yet so that in itself is pretty magical
- Sorry Mal, Alina is Darkling's gf now, don't you remember?
- Oh Kazzzzzz what have you done, you just handed Arken a death sentence. Sneaky! I knew that first “plan” was never going to work.
- Did he just say plan F ahahahahahabaha I’m dead. See, that was a funny, witty Kaz moment. I want more funny witty Kaz but like... there hasn’t really been downtime for it so it’s ok
- Whaaat Inej told him "don’t take chances." That was cute, I wasn’t prepared for that cuteness. How dare you
- Heyyyy who do you think you are, throwing knives like Inej?!
- Dude, I fucking love these brutal fights, they are amazing. Thank you for blessing us with an adult rating for all this delicious violence
- Darkling thinking he’s about to get laid right now ahahaha smh
- Man that poor guy, Kaz framed him. You are a bad man sometimes, Kaz. :( Well, it’s ok we knew what we were getting into with him. And that's just an unfortunate consequence of working with Kaz Brekker. Sometimes you get murdered.
- Madame Hooch is here to save you, Alina! Take the broomstick and fly away!
- Seriously though, Baghra needs to sell me on this part right here bc I found it very flat in the book and it didn’t sell me at all.
- “He chose a nobleman's name.” Yeah, you mean Count Kirigan? The one with the wine cellars and where Nikolai tests all his machines? I was wondering how they were going to explain that one. Kirigan already exists and he isn't the Darkling so uhhh?
- Alina don’t make him the master of the Amplifier Deathly Hallows!
- Ugh. Man idk, it still feels so sudden. When you just get a character to tell instead of show it’s not as impactful. It’s like well lemme give you a 3 minute lore dump of why everything you've seen over the last 4 episodes is a like, and suddenly you’re on the other side now. It still feels kind of that way. It's like Gandalf in Frodo's kitchen telling him he has the One Ring. But there were flashbacks in that one and it worked really well (bc LotR does everything well, let's be real.) This still doesn't work for me and I wanted more out of this scene, boohoo.
- Kaz in a church is so hilarious to me. He should have burst into flames like a vampire ahahaha
- Are you making fun of his limp, motherfucker?! Ohoho he’s gonna kill you good and proper now
- KAZ, you let him live you son of a bitch, why have you done this?! (for people complaining about Show Kaz being too soft, I'll let you have this one. Book Kaz would have killed him 100%)
- Oh my god.
- OH MY GOD.
- OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
- I’m sorry, I’m am short-circuiting.
- She killed him for YOU, Kaz. She who does not kill!
- "Look at me. Look at me!"
- I’m never going to recover from this.
- I'm really gonna need a second here.
- ...and it was in a CHURCH too of all places. A holy place!!! Especially for Inej! Her Saints were watching!
- Yeesh. Ok. Continuing.
- That was the sound of Darkling’s spurs jangling. YEEHAH. You can take spurs off, you know. They’re not built into your shoes. You fucking cowboy. (No I’m not one of you Free Reign people so don’t even think about it)
- ...how tall is Ben Barnes? He uses the intimidating height factor a lot. Wikipedia tells me 6’1. Ok ok I see you.
- LOL Jesper I feel the same way. All that plotting and Alina just waltzes out and hides in the trunk herself. Un fucking real. I love it. That was hilarious.
