"And by the way, Monsieur Marius, I believe that I was a little bit in love with you." (Les Misérables – Victor Hugo, 1862)
next up, the 1860s!! there was a lot going on during this decade, so i once again tried to keep a mix of upper and lower class fashions, as well as throwing in a few more "pioneer" esque dresses. after all, there's only so many petticoats you can wear when your oxen die and you have to walk!
hoop skirts would reach their peak in the middle of this decade, and from there the shape would become elliptical, with most of the "hoop" moving to the back. this would eventually become the "bustle". corsets were still worn, but with the layering and vastness of skirts, the size of the waist would already look smaller in comparison. hairstyles were lower, buns being held at the nape of the neck more often than not. heeled boots were back in style, as you might catch a glimpse of them as fabric moved due to the cage crinoline. near the end of the decade, it became more common to see skirts paired with shirtwaists or blouses instead of matching bodices.

A deeper look: 1865 Ethel Pence
If you haven't read it already, here is the post in which we see this portrait.
I had soo much fun dressing her up, and I can't believe how pretty she is!! Like pheww elmer we see where those good looks come from ... 😳 I was really sad it didn't fit into the texture so I had to mention it in the description, but if you look at the top you can see 'John C.' 's signature and the date it was painted! C. is for Calvert, and I briefly mention him in this post when going in depth into Ethel and Henry's lives, but who knows - maybe he'll appear later on *wink wink*
Ethel was born in 1848 (she's 2 years older than henry!) and so she would've been 17 here. She wasn't a pence yet, and I don't have a maiden name set out for her at this time but the two would've met towards the late 1860's, having had Elmer in 1871.
Blue and green have always been my go to colours for ethel, she just looks so gorgeous in those lighter tones and I adore the bonnet she's wearing here 🥰 she's quite a tragic character actually haha and I realize I never went to in depth into her unborn son - whom leroy was named after - rest assured there may be some future content on that ... whoo knowsss ...

Effie worked up the courage to tell her mother what happened and why she was scared. Her mother had been understanding and told her that she needed to tell Gilbert. Effie knew her mother was right, but she was worried that he'd reject her.
She met Gilbert out by their favorite copse of trees and he noticed her upset.
"What's wrong? Will you please tell me?"
"I... uh... we...," she faltered for the right words. Gilbert gently grasped her chin and gazed into her crystal blue eyes.
"Whatever it is it'll be ok. Just tell me."
"I'm pregnant."

200 Followers Gift: 19th-century Men's Lookbook
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, here it is. A gift to you all for getting my follower count up to a whole 200. I know it's not a huge milestone, but I'm excited about it, and I'm glad so many other people are interested in the things I make. As of right now I have 212 followers, and there were only about 190 students at my elementary school. That's weird. That's a lot of people.
This is a more informal lookbook than my usual ones. I haven't really gone all in on the photo editing. It's more of a timeline of fashion than a true lookbook. Note that it's a mix of casual wear (1810, 1820, 1830, 1850), regular daywear (1800, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890) and evening wear (1840).
1800s: hair / glasses (TSR) / suit / boots (Base Game)
1810s: hair / facial hair (Base Game) / vest / breeches / boots
1820s: hair / facial hair / vest / pants (Discover University) / boots
1830s: hair / facial hair (Base Game) / outfit / boots (Base Game)
1840s: hair / facial hair (Base Game) / suit / shoes
1850s: hair / facial hair / outfit / shoes (Base Game)
1860s: hat / hair / facial hair / suit / gloves (Base Game)
1870s: hat / hair / facial hair (Cottage Living) / jacket / pants (Sack Pants) / gloves (Base Game) / boots
1880s: hat / hair / facial hair (Horse Ranch) / suit / boots
1890s: hat / hair / facial hair (Cats & Dogs) / suit (Professor Plum) / shoes (Get Together)
huge thanks to all the cc creators included in this! you rock!

Civil War Nurse Barbie - BGC
As a belated celebration of Barbara Millicent Roberts' 65th birthday, I present the 1995 Civil War Nurse Barbie. This doll was part of the American Stories Collection, and her story was set during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
Mattel took some liberties with historical accuracy, so it is not totally appropriate for 1863. The doll came with a nurse's cap and cloak that would not have been standard uniform at the time, and I left the cloak off because I couldn't find a good mesh for it.
The dress is a recolor of @dancemachinetrait's maid and VAD uniforms, with the mesh edit from my Ruth dress. Petticoat texture comes from @noriannsimblr. There are 40 swatches from no particular palette. Half are stripes and half are solids. Half have the caduceus symbol on the apron and half don't.
The bag that comes with the doll looks more like a field kit or tool chest, which I couldn't find a good mesh for. Instead I used Agnes Crumplebottom's purse, which looks more like a traditional doctor's bag. Swatches are in @waxesnostalgic's Vintage Neutrals palette. Half have the caduceus symbol and half don't. Functions as a decorative object.

1850: Night at the Opera (A Collaboration with Vintage Simstress)
Hello, hello!
I know it's been a while (between life and being a perfectionist) since I've last posted anything, but this time I hope you enjoy what is on offer!
If you follow my story, you may have noticed the grand affair that was the Gala d'Opera! Scenes which took months of work to put together, of which included dresses and suits not yet seen before! With the help of my lovely friend, @vintagesimstress, she helped to create a few lovely dresses for the event, one especially for Eleanor, and the other for another sneaky little sim as part of a homage to my lovely friend for all her help making that scene a reality!
For those dresses, you can find Vintage's contribution here!

For my own contribution, I decided to try my hand at making some evening suits for my Mid-Victorian men. There are two versions, one with a closed jacket and one slightly opened. Please enjoy! <3

Cécile Rey and Marie-Grace Gardner, 1863
Cécile: hair / bonnet / eyes / blush / lipstick / dress / bracelet / ring
Marie-Grace: hair / bonnet / eyes / blush / lipstick / dress
Cécile Rey is a wealthy free woman of color and aspiring singer in New Orleans, and Marie-Grace Gardner, her best friend, is the daughter of a doctor and an aspiring nurse herself. They have been best friends for ten years and are now 20 years old, and the once-United States are now caught up in the American Civil War. Together, these friends transcend race and class barriers and work to help the orphans in their city.

Since our other two main characters got an official portrait, I thought the head matriarch Adelia Darlington deserved one as well. Here she is at her debutante ball in 1866, just before her engagement to Mr. James Darlington.
Aspiration: Successful Lineage
Traits: Proper, Family Oriented, Snob
Bonus Traits, Talent, and Weakness: Domestic, Mentor, Painting & Photography: Natural Born Visual Artist, Gardening: Not so Green Thumb
(Hats off to @anachrosims for this gorgeous screen. I won't lie, I totally based the whole color scheme of the photo around it).
