Fireman's Coat
Late 19th Century to Early 20th Century
Japan
Japanese firemen's coats are reversible. When fighting fires, the coat was worn as shown, together with close-fitting trousers, a hood, and gloves. Saturated with water, these garments gave protection against flames. A bold, legible pattern on the back identified the fireman’s brigade. For festive occasions, the pictorial side faced outward. This coat shows the Toad Spirit offering to teach the robber Jiraya magic, provided he used it only to benefit humanity.

Newlyn Fisher Clothing Set
I come to you today with this little historical seaside fashion interlude (before going back to work on more 1880′s sets). This set includes cable knit sweaters in high and low waisted, and variations on traditional fishermen smocks. More pics and download below
This set is partly inspired by the works of the school of Newlyn, a group of painters known to have depicted the surrounding of Newlyn, a Cornish coastal town, and its many fishermen in the 1880′s to 1900′s. And here is the painting that I referenced in the promo picture.
—————————  Cableknit Sweater  ————————
Tumblr media
———————————————————————————
This is the sweater from the Werewolf pack without the little laced up strings on the shoulders (why do you always add these unnecessary details EA ? 😅). I’ve made a short version (S) for my high waisted needs and a long (L) version, for both masc and fem frames, as well as both adult and children.
Cableknit sweaters originated from Ireland, in the Aran Islands, though other types of knitted jumpers called gansey already existed in the British, Irish and Channel isles. They were created between the 1890′s and 1900′s. They were initially knitted with unwashed and undied wool. Both the natural lanolin from the virgin wool and the knitted patterns made for water resistant sweaters and as such : good alternatives to the previously used ganseys made of oiled wool died with indigo.
These Aran sweaters slowly became some fashionable sportswear item during the 20′s and 30′s, and later reached its peak popularity in the 50s’ and 60′s worn by the likes of Grace Kelly and Steve McQueen.

——————————— Vareuse V1 ——————————
Tumblr media
———————————————————————————
Vareuses are a style of fishermen smocks with a V neck. This style was typical of Brittany fishermen though I have seen depiction of Norwegian fishermen for example sporting this style of smocks on 1880s paintings too. While I couldn’t find substancial informations on their origins and date of appereance, vareuses seem to have been used at least as far as mid 19th century and were still worn as work wear up til the mid 20th.
It is said that traditionally fishers wore different colors depending on their fishing style : yellow ones for those shellfish picking, rust colored ones for those using fish traps, red ones for oyster farmers and blue ones for those fishing in the open seas.
Fishermen smocks were oiled to be water repellant and worn on top of clothes and knitted garments to protect them from water and keep them relatively clean.
On this 1st version of the vareuse I’ve not put any clothing “underneath” to allow for warm weather and for combinations with accessory shirts or turtlenecks.

This 2nd version of a vareuse include a cableknit jumper sticking out of the V neck collar. The set also includes an overlay to pick the color of said cableknit jumper.

—————————  Cornish Crewneck  ————————
Tumblr media
———————————————————————————
Similarly to the vareuse, the crewneck is a style of fishermen smocks. This style is traditionally associated with Cornwall, in the north west of England. Cornish crewneck smocks were used similarly to vareuses.

Doyle Legacy 1890s - 1900s LOOKBOOK
Tumblr media
Helena Doyle Harrington 1890s - 1900s
Babies first Lookbook!😀
Helena's upbringing was marked by poverty, stemming from the loss of her mother. This hardship led her to turn to prostitution for survival. However, her future husband Eddy, rescued her from a dangerous encounter with a violent client, allowing her to leave that life behind.
Together, they transformed an abandoned hunting shed into a functioning farm for their family.
Known affectionately as "Dove," Which is a pet name given to her since she worked as a painted lady. The color red became symbol for Helena since she adopted it as her signature, using the color to accentuate her vibrant hair and attract clientele during her time in the sex work industry.
Even after transitioning from a sex worker to a devoted wife I kept that color in mind each time she got an updated wardrobe.
The Harringtons lived poorly which is also why some of Helena's outfits seem out of date for time, she utilized her knowledge of previous decades sewing patterns to make clothes for herself.
I used up every outfit slot in CAS and I'd rather not overwhelm myself so instead I chose my favorites to share!

I know they're serious but sometimes the antisemitic press attacks on Stefania were very funny. One called her "Stefania" Zahorska. Like they put her first name in scare quotes, as though that were the one she changed. Stefania is literally her middle name Assigned At Birth, which she'd been going by from a very young age. Meanwhile the Kraków Zionist press is always calling her "Pani Zahorska--to jest, Leser," which is MORE antisemitic

Health Alert:
This is a health warning for Time Agents visiting soda fountains and apothecaries between 1868-1930! Be extremely cautious!
While citric acid is a safe food additive in some eras, from the Reconstruction era through the Great Depression it contains dangerous quantities of LEAD.
In this era, citric acid is made in containers sealed with lead soldering, which would probably be fine if the acid itself wasn’t made from concentrated lemon juice.
Now I know…the urge to hop to 1890’s and enjoy a tart lemon soda at a Victorian era chemist’s counter is overwhelming. But!! There are safer, sanity-saving alternatives.
Instead of taking chances with citric acid, consider a sparkling phosphate soda! Delicious, tangy and completely free of toxic metals. You’ll be saying, “Yum!” instead of dying prematurely of kidney damage and nervous system derangement.
Phosphate sodas are this era’s safe sipping choice! Now, don’t be afraid of the chemically sounding name, this is nearly the same harmless phosphoric acid found in modern Coca Cola, balsamic vinegar and pickles! It will not erode your bones!
Try a tasty hot or cold phosphate soda in all the popular flavors of the era:
- Lemon
- Cherry
- Chocolate
- Angostura
- Egg
Thank you, and be safe!
V/r,
Agent Kay

🔸 Matilda Alice Powles (13 May 1864 – 16 September 1952) was an English music hall performer. She adopted the stage name Vesta Tilley and became one of the best-known male impersonators of her era. Her career lasted from 1869 until 1920. Starting in provincial theatres with her father as manager, she performed her first season in London in 1874. She typically performed as a dandy or fop, also playing other roles. She found additional success as a principal boy in pantomime. By the 1890s, Tilley was England's highest earning woman. She was also a star in the vaudeville circuit in the United States, touring a total of six times. She married Walter de Frece, a theatre impresario who became her new manager and songwriter. At a Royal Command Performance in 1912, she scandalised Queen Mary because she was wearing trousers. During the First World War she was known as "England’s greatest recruiting sergeant" since she sang patriotic songs dressed in khaki fatigues like a soldier and promoted enlistment drives. Becoming Lady de Frece in 1919, she decided to retire and made a year-long farewell tour from which all profits went to children's hospitals. Her last performance was in 1920 at the Coliseum Theatre, London. She then supported her husband when he became a Member of Parliament and later retired with him to Monte Carlo. She died in 1952 on a visit to London and is buried at Putney Vale Cemetery. Her life story was commemorated in the 1957 film After the Ball in which she was portrayed by Pat Kirkwood. #victorianchaps #victorian #edwardian #vestatilley #vaudeville #theatre #goodolddays #dandy #oldphoto #retro #vintage nostalgia #1870s #1880s #1890s #1900s #1910s #pastlives https://www.instagram.com/p/CjclkwOAwcp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
