a misconception I see a lot- and have even believed myself! -is, "well, women in western history could only wear all those layers because there was no climate change!"
which is. not really the case, as far as I can tell?
obviously this varies from era to era, but I was looking into historical temperatures here in Boston from the earliest consistent records (1893) and I was surprised to see several 90+-degree days most summers throughout the 1890s (fahrenheit)
now, I am not at all a climate-change denier. extreme heat has been getting more likely and more frequent the world over- I'm fully aware that I'm posting this during what some scientists are calling the hottest July on record globally. that being said, the idea that our ancestors NEVER had to deal with the temperatures we're facing now is factually incorrect for many of the areas worldwide where the clothing we're talking about was worn (and most scientists aren't saying that, I know! this is a pop history commentary, not a scientific one)
the fact is that, in most of the western world, yes, our ancestors did wear That Clothing in These Temperatures. less often and for shorter periods of time, most years, but...it happened! and they found ways to deal!

Notre premier modèle est fait en taffetas glacé vert et bleu et en mousseline de soie verte plissée. On le garnit de galon de taffetas bleu et vert que l'on dispose au bord inférieur de la tunique à l'encolure et sur les manches. La jupe de doublure en pongée est recouverte par un haut volant plissé en mousseline verte, monté sous la tunique; celle-ci retombe jusqu'à mi-hauteur; on fronce le haut que l'on monte au bord du corsage. Celui-ci est coupé d'un seul morceau avec les manches demi-longues; on l'échancre en pointe devant et derrière et on le garnit de galon. Les manches kimono se complètent par des bouffants en mousseline retenus dans un poignet en galon.
Our first model is made in green and blue glazed taffeta and pleated green silk chiffon. It is trimmed with blue and green taffeta braid that is placed on the lower edge of the tunic at the neckline and on the sleeves. The pongee lining skirt is covered by a pleated flounce top in green chiffon, fitted under the tunic; it falls halfway up; we gather the top as we go up to the edge of the bodice. This one is cut in one piece with half-length sleeves; it is cut into a point in front and behind and it is trimmed with braid. The kimono sleeves are completed by chiffon bouffants held in a braided cuff.

La seconde gravure représente une toilette en voile de soie imprimé à dessins pompadours; la jupe ayant 1 m. 75 de large est montée sur la doublure de pongée ainsi que la tunique drapée en forme de paniers; le haut est légèrement froncé. Le corsage en voile, coupé d'un seul morceau avec les manches, est croisé devant; on garnit les contours ainsi que ceux des parements de biais de soie de teinte assortie; des macarons en soie sont disposés sur la jupe et le corsage.
The second engraving represents an ensemble in silk voile printed with pompadour designs; the skirt having 1 m. 75 wide is mounted on the pongee lining as well as the tunic draped in the form of baskets; the top is slightly gathered. The voile bodice, cut in one piece with the sleeves, is crossed in front; the contours as well as those of the facings are trimmed with matching silk bias; silk macaroons are arranged on the skirt and the bodice.
