🎃HALLOWEEN 2024🎃
I watched The House That Dripped Blood (1971)
I'm starting this 1970's Halloween marathon with this film because it's just a good old fashioned collection of spooky stories.
Several stories are told about the different residents of an old English house, and their horrifying ends.
"The House That Dripped Blood" is a British horror anthology, which does what the best horror anthologies do, it stays true to the horror comics and stories that preceded it. On top of that, the film has all the posh British attitude and atmosphere that comes with the greatest Hammer Horror films. These two things combined really do make for a fun watch to get in the Halloween spirit. That somewhat stuffy British attitude, when juxtaposed against maniacs and murderers, really does evoke a good time.
The film features british horror veterans like Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, along with Denholm Elliot and the gorgeous Ingrid Pitt
The visuals are pretty, with nice hazy soap-opera lighting, clean cut costumed characters, and a modern Gothic style. (Modern for the 1970's)
As well, the stories move quickly. Which, if you know the anthology genre, you know pacing can make or break a film.
"The House That Dripped Blood" was a fantastic bit of spooky horror, which still had the beating heart of the Hammer Horror films of the 50's and 60's. It didn't usher in the new decade, it reminded us of what came before. Haunted houses, voodoo dolls, ghoulish characters and classic monsters. Everything that comes to mind when I think about what got me into Horror and Halloween in the first place.
