Yay, it's officially spooky season! I knew I wanted to do a retro Monster High lookbook for Halloween, but I was tossing up between the 1960s and the 1980s. Both periods lend themselves well to the style of the dolls, although ultimately the 80s won out because the wide range of fashion during that decade perfectly translated to each of the main characters.

🎸 OC in something from the 80’s

I couldn’t imagine Helen Coates as anything other than a career femme in the 1980s. There would’ve been more freedom for her to pursue a career in the 80s than the 30s, and more opportunities for her as an unmarried African-American woman. In the 1980s, she could possibly make a living as an environmental activist, as she shares her love of nature with her girlfriend Consuelo, or a school principal.

Plumbmommy here! Welcome to my FIRST EVER public CHALLENGE. 

The Decades Challenge 

Grab your best top hat or whatever you got as we take a journey back to the 1890s in the United States. Let's be real, our lives today are much more comfortable than the ones our ancestors had to endure. shout out to great great great plumbmommy.

I thought I’d give our journey a different start than most decades challenges and start on The Orphan Train Movement, which was a welfare program that shipped children, via railways from crowded Eastern cities to rural towns. As they would stop from town to town children would often have to try to impress their future families, in order to be adopted. Tragically siblings were often split up. 

About 250,000 children were relocated by orphan trains between 1854 and 1929. Two of these children are our legacy founders. A set of sisters: Elsie and Alma.

Elsie is brave, outdoorsy, and a kleptomaniac. 

Alma is angelic and independent

Little Backstory: The girls lived a neglected childhood in a cramped one-bedroom apartment with their sex seggs worker mother, Alice. Sadly, Alice didn’t have many maternal bones in her body, but she did care for her daughters. 

She ultimately decided to place her daughters on The Orphan Train after it was clear that little Alma’s cold was something serious. In order to help Alma who she feared suffered from consumption, Alice made the ultimate sacrifice and sent the girls westbound.

Although, if little Alma has tuberculosis, then she sadly may not make it through the winter.

Vaccines were not in full virus butt-kicking swing yet and many people died of common diseases. One in seven of all people alive at the beginning of the 19th century died from tuberculosis, or "consumption." The victims endured hacking, bloody coughs, debilitating lung pain, and fatigue.

1930s Loookbook

After the roaring 20s, fashion became more conservative in the 1930s, with hair and hemlines getting longer again. The era was defined by the great depression, after the stock market crashed in 1929, and lasted through almost the whole decade. Many families during this time began making dresses from flour sacks, and so companies began printing textiles on the sacks for extra reusability. Despite the decade's widespread poverty, fashion themes of femininity and elegance prevailed, inspired by Hollywood stars like Joan Crawford.

🇺🇲Army of the United States🇺🇲: a military lookbook

PART III(FINAL)

1980s - Early 2000s: Woodland Camouflage BDUs. The Army continued to use the BDU pattern into the 1980s. It featured a distinctive woodland camouflage pattern.

Gulf War & Desert Storm(1990-91): The Desert Storm uniform featured a distinctive desert camouflage pattern that included various shades of tan, brown, and light green. This pattern was designed to blend in with the desert terrain, making it harder for the wearer to be spotted.

Early 2000s - Present: ACUs (Army Combat Uniform). Introduced in the early 2000s, ACUs replaced the BDUs. They featured a digital camouflage pattern and were available in both a temperate and arid version.

2010s - Present: Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP). The OCP, also known as Scorpion W2, is the current standard uniform. It includes a pattern with subdued green, tan, and gray colors and is worn with the rank and name tapes on a Velcro patch.

okay, i got a bit dramatic with this one, but can you blame me? after all, everything was bigger in the eighties. hair was bigger, shoulder pads were bigger, everything was bigger. music was bigger, and music related subcultures gained a super heavy footing. while the punk movement had already existed and the goth subculture had started to build in the late seventies, they both hit their heyday in the 1980s! glam rock was huge in the eighties, and there was actually a fair bit of androgyny in rock styles and subcultural styles. far before the athleisure trend we see today (i still dont understand what athleisure is?), was the athletic fad of the eighties, heralded by olivia newton john's "physical". this athletic fad is where we see the legwarmers and the spandex that you'll see in every modern day 80s-themed halloween costume. much like in the 1930s, fashion drew from film and hollywood, and john hughes' teen films influenced the fashion of the youth, which in turn inspired more teen films.

guys, we're getting super close to modern day, and i have to admit: i have no fucking idea what modern trends are. i have like five outfits and most of them involve band tee shirts.

A Personal Announcement 💕

Hi Friends and Followers 🧚🏼‍♀️

So, I've previously mentioned my plan to retire from simblr by the end of 2022, and I promised that I would let you all know more details of when and why in time. I figured that it was time for me to give you all an explanation of what the heck is up... below the cut, for those interested.

The reason I will be retiring from simblr is because...

✨I'm pregnant!🤰🏼

This might come as a surprise. But in the real world, I'm in my late-20s and have a long-term partner/fiance. This is a very happy thing for us considering where we are at in life.

Ok now here comes the wild part...

You know how my sims all have a habit of having twins all the time??

Well. It turns out life imitates art because...

I'm pregnant with twins 👶🏼👶🏼

Yeah, what the fuck right? That bit came as a total surprise to me too.

So that's my big news! I will be having twins in October/November 2022, and I will be retiring once they are born 🐣

I have been very unwell the last few months and playing through the 1960s has been a wonderful distraction from all the unpleasant symptoms. Man, I love sims.

Right now though, I am extremely tired and drained which has been getting in the way of playing and posting. I'm also becoming more preoccupied with getting organised in my real life for parenthood and trying to savour this time before it all changes.

For this reason, I've cut back on the content I share here. I've stopped creating CC and lookbooks, and only post Decades Challenge content.

But I have also realised that it not going to be possible for me to complete every decade of the Langston Legacy in time before I retire. So I have had to make some hard decisions on my end game for the Langstons. The Langston Legacy will now end at the end of the 1980s, when I reach 10 generations.

None of this is to say that I won't ever finish the Langston Legacy in my own time, or that I will never return to simblr - I know there are plenty of amazing creators here who are also parents. But I don't know what my life is going to look like when I become a parent, or how it will change my priorities.

I know this announcement might be disappointing. It disappoints me too that I won't be able to reach the modern-day with this Legacy I have worked so hard on. But, I am heartened by the fact that there are so many other wonderful Decades Challenge stories and Historical creators on this platform for everyone to enjoy, and there will be more I am sure when I eventally leave 💖
