#since i've decided to be online™ for a minute i'm gonna drop a controversial post and dip#i'm so so tired of people and their opinions on rainbows at shows#when people started bringing flags to 1d shows it was because they felt safe and the fandom felt like a community to them#they didn't do it for the boys and they didn't do it in the hopes of the boys interacting with the flags#the boys were lovely enough to make the fans feel safe and that's why the fans brought flags and stuff along with them#however as of late people have forgotten that and they bring it in the hopes of louis interacting with them#and then they're disappointed when he doesn't interact with them and unlarrie or unstan or whatever#like i'm so sorry but he never asked you explicitly to bring flags. and also he doesn't owe you an interaction#sure it's fun to do fan projects and to see everyone come together but do it for yourself#don't do it because you think he's a sorry closeted person who needs to see the support#he knows he's supported. he founded the rainbow bears so he definitely knows he's supported#by pressuring him to interact with the flags or whatever you're literally just shoving his closet in his face#just because harry interacts with rainbows does not mean louis should do. they're two completely different people#with completely different situations. so don't invalidate their identities#if you want to bring flags along do it for yourself do it because you want to do it because you feel the community#don't ever for whatever reason do it for louis because you think he needs it or whatever#like in general don't do it for other's sake. do it for you and only you.#i'm genuinely tired of the louis vs rainbow conversation coming up every few days so yeah

With the first quarter of the 21st century coming to an end, Billboard has been looking back on the 25 Greatest Pop Stars of the Past 25 Years. Below, we take a deeper look into the solo career of Louis Tomlinson — one of the members of our No. 22 pop stars, One Direction — and how his songwriting, originally honed in 1D, has helped him develop into one of the group’s strongest breakout artists.
When One Direction officially went on hiatus in 2015, Zayn Malik dropped Mind of Mine in 2016, Harry Styles’ eponymous LP dropped in 2017, Niall Horan followed with Flicker later that year and Liam Payne’s First Time EP arrived in 2018. Louis Tomlinson, however, took his time with releasing a full project – and entered an era of healing and self-discovery that saw him realizing his potential as one of 1D’s most self-actualized artists, even if not necessarily the starriest.
Even before going solo, Tomlinson showed he was meant for breakthrough success while in One Direction. Longtime Directioners know that Tomlinson wrote more songs in One Direction than any other member, penning long standing hits including “Perfect,” “History” and “Fool’s Gold” and proving his fortitude as a songwriter who understands lyrical cleverness and crafting the indescribably catchy refrains necessary to produce arena-ready hits. Beyond his musical abilities, Tomlinson’s sense of humor and friendship with fellow 1D members also ensured fans had a soft spot for him.
However, when he did go solo, the road was slippery at first. He teamed up with Steve Aoki for his first solo release “Just Hold On” in December 2016, and just three days before its release, Tomlinson’s mother died of leukemia. He still took the stage to perform the song on The X Factor, the first public testament to the star’s strength and dedication to his musical craft.
Tomlinson’s resilience amid adversity continued as he navigated the music industry. The star signed with Epic Records in 2017 and released a few singles – including “Miss You” and the Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals-assisted “Back to You.” While the infectious hooks to both tracks could have easily solidified Tomlinson as a pop mainstay, the two singles didn’t perform as well as expected on the charts: “Just Hold On” peaked at No. 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 and “Back to You” hit No. 40, while “Miss You” missed the chart altogether. Ultimately, a full-length album never materialized with Epic Records.
youtube
Tomlinson shortly got back on his feet, as he always does, and signed with Arista Records in 2019 – where he honed his talent as a songwriter, this time feeling comfortable enough to tackle more vulnerable topics in his music. His first release under the label was “Two of Us,” a heart-wrenching tribute to his late mother. “I know you’ll be looking down/ Swear I’m gonna make you proud/ I’ll be living one life for the two of us,” he sings in the chorus, giving a glimpse into what would soon become a musical career full of honesty and vulnerability.
Unfortunately, shortly after its release, another hardship struck Tomlinson’s life when his 18-year-old sister Fizzy died of an accidental overdose. Both the release of “Two of Us” and the tragedy that followed showed just how close Tomlinson’s community of fans is, as they showered him with online love and support in the months that followed.
After taking some much-deserved time to heal, he announced in August of that year that his debut solo album was on its way – and shortly after, he released a follow-up single, the rock-leaning, drumline-driven “Kill My Mind.” Tomlinson admitted that he finally found his stride. “I’m actually really proud and relieved to finally find my place, find my lane musically,” he told Hits Radio Breakfast at the time, indicating a moment of relief amid his turbulent few years.
youtube
Tomlinson’s debut solo album, Walls, arrived in January 2020 and while it hit the Billboard 200‘s top 10, it was met with mixed reviews from critics, who suggested that the heart he wanted to portray wasn’t quite there. His growth outside of commercial success proved otherwise, as he had been spending the past few years building a solid identity not only as an artist, but also as a person. While some of the other One Direction alums are still finding their footing with their solo sounds to this day, Tomlinson grew strongly into an instrumentation-focused pop-rock artist whose lyrics go beyond the cookie cutter sentiments you might expect from a former boy band member.
And soon, all the hard work – both personally and musically – finally paid off. Faith in the Future, his 2022 sophomore solo album, debuted at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart. In the United States, Faith In The Future debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart, and at No. 5 on the all-genre Billboard 200, his highest-charting set yet on both tallies. The album’s success, as well his sold-out live shows on its accompanying tour, not only showed the still-standing Directioner devotion to Tomlinson, but also made it clear that he picked up a slew of new fans along the way.
Tomlinson’s self-awareness was evident on the album’s lead single, “Bigger Than Me.” “When somebody told me I would change/ I was afraid, I don’t know why/ ‘Cause so does the world outside, I’ve realized/ It’s bigger than me,” he sings – indicating that the key for solo success all along was being himself, and letting go of the pressure that fame brings.
While Tomlinson has still yet to score the major chart hits stateside that his 1D bandmates essentially achieved right away – and has been more focused on his 28 clothing line the past couple years – he’s proven that he doesn’t need traditional pop crossover success to have a bright future ahead of him. With another couple albums and tours that continue to establish his identity and expand his artistry, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him making the jump to arenas in the not-distant future. Louis’ solo career may not have gotten off to the perfect start, but it just might end up being perfect for him in the long-term anyway.

A deep dive into Louis Tomlinson's career, both solo and in One Direction, and how he's grown into one of pop music's most thoughtful songwriters.

Back in the 1D days, Louis and Niall did an interview with Greg James where they read fic, but Greg prefaced the whole thing by saying that fan fiction was a private part of fandom and he wasn’t going to violate that, so his staff wrote a fun little two page fic for the boys to read out of respect for the creators in the fandom. If this interviewer wrote a fake fic for Niall, they needed to make it clear. Still wouldn’t be okay, in my opinion, but writing something “embarrassing” and “ridiculous” written by “obsessed teenage girls” and passing it off as real fic would be even worse. Niall and Capital owe the fandom and the specific fan sincere apologies.
It's not just that they read fic. It's that they're reinforcing a narrative about 'crazy fan girls' when that's one - misogynistic and two - grossly simplifying a group of people who led to their success. it was fan girls who voted in the x factor days. it was fan girls who sold out venues and bought merch. it was fan girls calling radio stations and demanding their music. it was fan girls who created charity projects and fandom projects to create a safe space for fans. it was fan girls who, for over a decade now, have kept up their ability to be so globally successful. and this is true for every type of fan. every single one of us has led to their success and their multi-millionaire status. and yet, we get mocked and belittled and treated poorly for a joke. For a fucking jab in a poorly constructed interview.

I know Clone High fans only care about the white characters that’s why JFK and Topher are the most popular characters right now (Although JFK has a funny voice too) but I fucking love how the show writes Harriet, Confucius, Frida and Cleo.
I already wrote a bunch but Harriet’s obsession with fame because she doesn’t want to fall to the shadow of her clone mother, how she wants to make silly and fun art despite the legacy she has to live up to are so compelling.
I love Cleo’s fall from grace as the former popular girl, and how only now she has a change to be emotionally open to anyone ever. How Frida uses a chill mask that completely falls off when a hot girl has a crush on her, Confucius’s rich parent troubles and social media addict-ness are SOOOOOOOO fun to see being played with by the show.
Joan also gets some good moments, I like how she is not a 1d “not like other girls” type and is allowed to be on the wrong.
I just wish this fandom would stop freaking out ever every sad white boy that shows up. Gogh was already a fandom favorite and he is a recurring background character, people kept projecting depth on Topher when he is literally just a shitty white ally who tries to do good on the most self-centered way possible, but white male characters will always be seen with more depth than any other character on the show because white fans are more willing to project into them than to ever engage with characters from other backgrounds, that has always been how fandoms work and I know this won’t change, so I’m glad the characters of color on this show are allowed to be complex, even if the fandom won’t care.

marauders in 2024 taste in music except it’s MY taste in music
James: he’s big on Tyler, the creator, fucks w harry styles and some of taylor swift (he started listening to them cus he heard lily likes them, turns out it’s his thing too). proud ed sheeran enjoyer, also listens bands like the kooks and the strokes, wallows and just general vibey music. casual listener of everything, not really into stan culture
Remus: idc what u say bro is into presplit panic! at the disco, like worshipped ryan ross when he was 13 kind of guy. the front bottoms, fucks w idkhow, had a painfully pretentious ‘born in the wrong generation’ phase where he was obvs really big on bowie, the stones, the smiths, the cure etc.
Sirius: Got into the 2015 emo trinity because of remus’s ryan ross obsession. LOVED pierce the veil as an angsty teen, massively into fob (especially pre-hiatus) and had a crush on Pete Wentz growing up. Definitely had a Gerard Way fan account when he was 15. (i’m projecting). never truly left his emo phase, just stopped being pretentious about it and also began listening to pop music.
Peter: actually enjoys p!atd up to pray for the wicked (again, thanks to remus forcing them on everyone back in secundary school). probably a casual listener of a bunch of stuff, though he’s a big weezer fan and really enjoys niall horan. WILL crank up brainrot music (like the hamsterdance or fnaf songs or minecraft parodies and he knows every single word)
Marlene: everyone’s favourite cool girl, loves riot grrrl music!!! CHAPPEL ROAN!!!!!! OBVIOUSLY a paramore stannie. shakes ass to Gaga and Troye Sivan, probably went to see Weezer live with Peter and started a moshpit during Buddy Holly.
Mary: she’s beyhive for sure, as in, has extensive knowledge on everything beyoncé. Got into Taylor Swift because of Lily. Those two def had a 1D phase together. Likes Pink Pantheress and some Halsey, got into chappel roan bcs of Marlene. She likes most of the main pop girls (ariana, dula peep, olivia…) she’s an overall fun person, so her music taste reflects that.
Lily: HEAVY on Taylor swift and harry styles. as before mentioned, she had a 1D phase along with Mary (she was a Niall girl). Had the inevitable not like other girls phase when she got into Lorde, the 1975, arctic monkeys and halsey (it’s a canon event we can’t intervene). Got over her internalised misogyny and became a swiftie, amen🙏🏻
(gonna do the slytherins in a separate post 😋)

NSFW Art: No
Preferences: I prefer creating Louis, Harry and Larry fan art as that's what I'm used to, however I am working on my style more to include the other boys. But for now, Harry, Louis and Larry. I prefer not to create nsfw fan art at this moment in time, but can create suggestive manips and moodboards. Also, I prefer to create for more fluffy topics and stay away from dark and dddne themes. My style at the moment is mainly cartoon-like but I am working on my more realistic art.
Will NOT create: NSFW fan art, dark and DDDNE themes. Art for pairings outside of the 1D boys (exceptions to Lewis Capaldi).

Will NOT create: ships that are not between some combination of the five boys- no external pairings plz
Timeline: depends on what you want! if you want something quick and small, a week will generally be fine. if you want something involved and complex, i’ll need more time.

I also generally don’t do chibi art. I reserve the right to say no to anything, but if you’re unsure about something, don’t hesitate to ask !

Art Styles: Moodboards, Gifsets. i can attempt gif manips (you can find some in my creations) but it might take a bit of time to make those.
NSFW Art: No
Preferences: any topic that isn’t too specific is fine with me as it’s sometimes hard to look for clear footage of certain things. as for ships, i’d prefer any within the 1d boys, and only louis rare pairs. as for girl direction, i can attempt to make something with gifs but it wouldn’t include faces.
Will NOT create: no full faces of kids, no underage (<18), no age regression, no daddy kink, no rape (even if it’s not between the main pairing), no incest/selfcest. i can’t think of anything else at the moment but i’m willing to talk to the author before deciding if i can help with their visuals or not.
Timeline: if they only want moodboards with pics, it can be two days prior. if they want a simple gifset (not specific footage), five days prior. if it’s a very specific topic and it must be included in their visuals or if it’s a gif manip, one to two weeks prior. they can contact me way before their deadline, it’s better to give them more options.

Art Styles: Fanart, Moodboards, Manips, Video Trailers
NSFW Art: Yes
Preferences: larry, louis, and harry mostly, but i am willing to try out other ships just nothing outside of ot5. i feel comfortable drawing anything nsfw or sfw. i also love to create moodboards/covers and have slowly been making manips. i have a job in videography, so if there is a video trailer needed i would need a lot of time in advance since i do a lot of other video projects and art/moodboards/manips are quicker and easier!
Will NOT Create: i really don't draw anything too dark (anything that might fall under dddne, extreme gore, certain kinks, ect) but im willing to discuss and work with you depending on the topic/contents.
Timeline: preferably 2 weeks for a drawing or manip, one week for a moodboard and 1-3 months for a video, depending on length/content.

Maybe you can help me understand. The LATAM promo content has been great in my opinion in quantity and quality. Louis looks relaxed and his answers show thought, humility and maturity, and with his usual sass and humor. This is the most he has shared of himself since his solo career started.
So it's become a real surprise when I've read a few anons write to blogs saying they don't like the person Louis has become, and they like 1D Louis. Another said that they think his persona has gotten "progressively worse and worse". And I'm like, did you not see the years and years of being pushed aside, of being told he had a bad voice, of no support from radio, of stunts, etc fighting for his career. And did they not watch or read his interviews?? So many interviewers during this past week have complimented Louis.
Louis can never win.
I agree, it can really feel like people are just not actually seeing the same content as we are and it's hard not to feel like some of this is that they AREN'T seeing it, like people go way too much off blogs' (often very wild) interpretations of what Louis says and how he says it rather than just listening to him talk or watching him interact with fans. Or maybe it's that they have been believing in these made up versions of him when he hasn't been around for a minute and now that actual Louis reappears it doesn't match up with those ideas and they feel shocked and upset. But if people are saying he isn't the same as he was in 1D well, it's hard not feel like they were NEVER paying attention and are just talking about the made up image of him that was sold by 1DHQ (or saying they don't like him unless he's twinky and flamboyant.) Louis said he "were a lot sweeter back then" and maybe so but in all the core ways, I think he's just the same as he has always been. If people don't like how that looks now that's their right, but he's not gonna be 19 again and he's fought hard to get to decide for himself what image he wants to project and has said over and over that he won't be going back to the 1D version of that, so maybe go find someone else to follow, IDK. Me, I'll just be over here sitting back and admiring what he's like now. I think he's the same as every time he does promo (charming, chill, funny, introspective and smart and willing to share little glimpses of emotional honesty)! It's been a while since he's done so much promo and with so much content to enjoy just now I hope more people will tune into that rather than interpretations of it and discover that for themselves. I am gonna disagree with you about one thing though: Louis CAN and IS winning, 100%, right now in front of our very fucking eyes!!! So who cares about the haters :)

WHAT EVEN IS THIS OUTFIT?!?! HOLY SHIT
DAMN NIALL JAMES HORAN?!?!
(you won you won you won! so happy for you cc! 💕🫶🏻💕🫶🏻💕🫶🏻💕)
Shay this is the first pic I see with the flag omg omg omg 😭❤️🇲🇽 I was manifesting so hard for this to happened and somehow it did. This is my favorite pic of Niall ever.
I saw the fan trying to throw the flag mutliple times and before Slow Hands he accept it and it was so gorgeous and magical.
He sang all the songs I wanted except Stockholm Syndrome (I call it the Night Changes curse I know you love the song but I prefer others 1d songs) but I forgive him because he sang Science and Cross Your Mind and Must be Love but especially the first two I've been praying and manifesting that he sing those and having 1% hope. When he sing Science I was shaking, I was so surprise of how lucky I was that he choose that day to perform it, it was so beautiful to hear it. And Elias show me the setlist, Cross your mind was a last minute change it wasn't on the setlist, it was meant to be for me to heart it ❤️😭.
Niall said this last 2 shows in Mexico City we were the loudest crowd of the tour so far. That this is what he dreams to be in front of crowds like this, we were so loud for every song and he was so happy.
The fan projects didn't work fully, only The Show a little bit but we did make the kill my mind lights spontaneously for Save My Life and he like it.
Everyone was having the best time and he took his shirt off before singing Heartbreak Weather and I lose my mind 🫠 he look so good and is the smallest tank top on Earth, like wow.
Anyway, that is a lot of ideas of what I could remember. I love Niall more than I already have. His love from México was beautiful to hear and he is an amazing performer, artist and songwriter. What a dream come true really, after all this months following his tour and doing updates of his tour living his tour in real live was such a magical experience, I feel so lucky to have whitness that show.
Thank you Shay for sharing this photo with me I will keep it in my heart and mind.
I hope you have a great day/afternoon/night.

A deep dive into Louis Tomlinson's career, both solo and in One Direction, and how he's grown into one of pop music's most thoughtful songwriters.
Sep 3rd 2024 by Rania Aniftos

Seeing rainbow lights on the venue, and stage, and crowd for Louis in 2023 after everything he has experienced and been through kind of knocks me out every time I see it. Last night was beautiful. So glad the rainbow projects are here and that he gets to feel that love.
I don’t think that any of us in the 1D days would’ve thought this was possible. I’m so glad it is. I also don’t think the crowd and new fans fully understand just how huge this is for Louis and his fans who have been here for a long time. Louis being associated with ANYTHING rainbow almost felt like a dream years ago, now it’s the norm. It’s so beautiful.
Thank you @rainbowmegamix for keeping it going!

Just a Little Bit of Your Heart (JALBOYH)
Harry wrote JALBOYH for Ariana Grande, he first performed on his first solo tour. It is about loving someone who is not fully committed to the singer. Harry has performed 89 of its total 99 live performances, starting with this one in September 2017:
youtube
Ariana told J-14 she almost didn't record it because Harry's demo was so good and his was her favourite version:
“I was more intimidated because he recorded a demo for me so I could learn the song. I was like, "I don't know if I wanna touch this song.'
Tumblr media
When was it written
To MTV Ariana said:
He was just visiting the studio and (producers) Savan (Kotecha) and Johan (Carlsson) were like 'Hey do you wanna write a song for Ariana?' and he was like 'Oh sure!'" "He went into the other room and they were writing for a while and I remember when I heard it I was like 'Wow that's a really strong verse, that's really beautiful’
Savan Kotecha and Max Martin produced Ariana’s album, 'My Everything', which was recorded at Conway Studios September 2013 to March 2014. Savan wrote WMYB and was close with Harry.
In another interview Ariana said it was written in Los Angeles when Harry had dates town. (6:50). 1D didn't have L.A. tour dates then. However he was in L.A. 20 February - 18 March 2014. Ariana was at Conway Studios the first week of that:

If Max Martin at Conway Studios 15-22 February 2014 sounds familiar, it should. That’s the who, where and when Style, I Know Places and Shake it Off were recorded (with another Johan). Ari and Taylor were at the same studio at the same time. Max Martin worked on both projects and Scott Borchetta managed them both. Taylor also would have played Style for Harry as a courtesy before leaving the studio with Max. Other artists also shared Conway during 1989.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the 2014 timeline, within a fortnight: Harry was spotted backstage at Red, he broke up with Kendall, left Brits after party early to fly straight to LA the next morning, 20 February. Visited Conway Studios where Taylor was recording Shake it Off! Wrote this song. Then on on 25 February 2014 he got the anatomical heart tattoo and incorporated HSA Publishing. As this was his first commercial work outside 1D it was presumably to give Ariana this song. No wonder he has said it is special and his favourite song he gave away.
Tumblr media
(Harry was also in LA 20 January, Ari and Taylor were also in Conway then, it could have been 20 January and I Know Places, I think Feb because of HSA's incorporation)
Harry was there when Ariana recorded it:
Ariana describes Harry’s energy in the studio: “Great! Very funny, very silly, very sweet, very professional, and never too serious. Like I would be singing in the booth and I would cut a vocal, and he would be like, ‘Oh that was terrible, you should try it again,’ but he was like joking. He was very nice, very very sweet guy.”
Taylor saw Ariana perform it at the Grammys. The screens showed Harry’s name. Ariana hugged Taylor after she performed OOTW.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On 25 September 2015 (Interesting date) Ariana performed it with Coldplay, Chris Martin said "This is a song written by the most handsome man in the world, Harry Styles, he couldn't be here so asked we perform it for you". Ariana Tweeted and Coldplay replied "beautiful song", which Harry liked. As publisher he approved that.
When meeting fans in 2017 Ariana also told fans it was about a relationship that wasn’t known and winked when asked if it was about Taylor. Tumblr post from a person there and one with screenshot of it. Thank you @womanexile
Lyrics
I don't ever ask you where you've been And I don't feel the need to Know who you're with I can't even think straight but I can tell That you were just with her
This verse establishes that Harry is writing about someone in an open relationship. The song is about another partner.
This verse is similar to the Taylor's line in:
Style “I say, "I heard, oh / That you've been out and about with some other girl, some other girl" / He says, "What you heard is true, but I / Can't stop thinkin' 'bout you and I" / I said, "I've been there too a few times" and
Tis the Damn Season "If I wanted to know who you were hanging with While I was gone I would have asked you"
And I'll still be a fool, I'm a fool for you
This line is very reminiscent of One Direction's Fool's Gold, which Harry wrote 6 months later. "I've let you use me from the day that we first met / But I'm not done yet / Falling for your fool's gold"
In both JALBOYH and Fool's Gold Harry sees his love is not reciprocated but he is a fool who loves them anyway. Harry was also a fool for love in Sunflower and Boyfriends. More on fool.
ChorusJust a little bit of your heart x2 Just a little bit of your heart is all I want Just a little bit of your heart x2 Just a little bit is all I'm asking for
This chorus is heartbreaking, here he settles for the smallest affection from someone in an open or not committed relationship.
A very similar idea is in Music For a Sushi Restaurant's "If the stars were edible / And our hearts were never full / Could we live with just a taste?"
Songs can be about more than they seem, (an open relationship), I think JALBOYH, Fools Gold and MFASR could all be about someone with different priorities who doesn't want to settle down and commit.
I don't ever tell you how I really feel 'Cause I can't find the words to say what I mean And nothing's ever easy That's what they say I know I'm not your only
Not communicating with his muse is a theme in Harry's work, and something he has said in interviews is that it's easier to say something in song:
MMITH "We don't talk about it / It's something we don't do".
Sign of the Times "We don't talk enough / We should open up / Before it's all too much"
Talk "Don't ask me to talk about / I don't wanna talk at all (hey)"
If I could fly is a nice juxtaposition, also written with Johan Carlson a year later, when he opened up.
Things are not easy, or complicated in Lay Down "Even though it's complicated / We were never meant to make it this time" and Complicated Freak.
But I'll still be a fool 'Cause I'm a fool for you I know I'm not your only But at least I'm one I heard a little love is better than none
In the last verse Harry resigns himself to not being his loves only, or priority but can't let it go.

Q: Among those decisions is to be the last 1D member to make your solo career, and today we are here with "Faith In The Future" that sounds 100% yours. Looking back, how do you see your path has unwinded?
Louis: I feel very comfortable. The mentality I have now feels very different from the one I had when I started this journey as a solo artist. I feel very blessed to be able to continue making music. But it's also a very nice feeling and it's something very new for me to feel so comfortable on stage and so comfortable when I'm making the music I want to make. In general, yes, I am very happy.
Q: Louis, I imagine there must be some time in your career when you said, wow, I did it!
Louis: You know, I used to resist that idea, ‘cuz for whatever reason, I don't know, I never wanted to give myself that, I suppose… my brain, but… I have, I have started trying to have those moments more for myself. It often happens on the live show. It can be something that fans did together, like some kind of fan project. But also, even when I played the festival just now, in Mexico, that was one of those moments. I was kind of nervous going out there, and the audience was so vast, but people seemed to be having a good time. So yeah, it was great.
