5 KDramas to Watch if You Want to See Female Villains in Action
There are three main elements to make a Kdrama worth watching - the main leads, the execution of the storyline and the villains. You can’t deny the fact that villains like Jung Joon Ho and Imoogi have made the courses of the dramas even more exciting and enthralling to watch. Villains have sometimes made us hate them with all of our hearts, sometimes they silently secured a place in it (just like Jung Guen Won from Itaewon Class).
When it comes to Kdrama villains, they are mostly male but that doesn’t mean Korean Industry has not gifted us some of the cruelest and toughest female villains. And if you are yet to enjoy one of these bone-chilling female villains of Kdrama, then you are at the right place because today we have brought 5 deadliest yet underrated female villains for you to enjoy.
1. Park Yeon Jin - The Glory
Tumblr media
There is hardly anyone who has not watched The Glory yet. The drama deals with sensitive themes like high school bullying, abuse of power and money, infidelity and so on. And when a drama is mainly dark themed, the actors playing these dark roles need to be talented enough to pull the roles perfectly without leaving any loopholes. Lim Ji Yeon here plays the role of Park Yeon Jin, who is the leader of the bully group. She is a spoiled teen brat, who abuses her power and money to get away with her wrong doings. She constantly bullies Moon Dong Eun, pushes another student from the rooftop, kills one of her notorious friends, cheats on her husband and what not. She has all the ill-qualities that will make you hate her from the core of your heart. But her character and Lim Ji Yeon’s ability to blend with the role, makes the drama much more enjoyable and thrilling. So, if you have not watched it, you should give it a try but proceed with caution since there are triggering concepts.
2. Choi Myeong Hee - Vincenzo
Tumblr media
Everything I try to write about Choi Myeong Hee will fall short. The way we all wanted to kill her while watching Vicenzo is proof of the ability of Kim Yeo Jin in portraying this evil lawyer, who is also Jung Joon Ho’s ally. She’s nasty, she is evil, she is cruel, even her accent will tick you off very badly. But we have to admit to the fact that the drama would not be as marvelous as it is without her character in it. She constantly commits many wrong deeds only to gain more and more power. However, we must admit that we all have been quite impressed by her zumba dancing skills anyway.
3. Cha Moon Suk - Lawless Lawyer
Tumblr media
The character of Cha Moon Suk is the perfect example of two-faced. This Lawless Lawyer villain appears to be all noble and caring but she is actually corrupt and greedy. Lee Hye Young plays the role of a senior judge, who secretly runs a corrupt charity and spares absolutely no one who comes in her way. She doesn’t even hesitate to kill her dear friend nor does she show mercy for her long-time right hand man Ahn Oh Joo. She’s driven by her greed and can do anything to attain more power and money. In my personal opinion, her character and awesome screenplay is probably the only thing that makes the drama worth watching, as for me, both of the main leads could have portrayed themselves a lot better.
4. Kang So Young - School 2015
Tumblr media
Here comes another bully, Kang So Young from School 2015. Cha Soo Hyang plays this character of this spoiled teenager Kang So Young who finds great pleasure in bullying her orphan classmate, Eun Bi. Her bullying goes so far that Eun Bi is pushed to the verge of death. However, Kang So Young feels no remorse. As the drama goes, she gets even more evil as she does not show any sign of leaving Eun Bi alone. She does not even regret her choices and uses her parent’s power to get away with everything. However, at the end of the drama she reflects upon her choices and apologies to Eun Bi. But that does not mean her character is easily forgiven, am I right?
5. Choi Yoo Jin - The K2
Tumblr media
Here comes our last and my personal favorite pick, Choi Yoo Jin from The K2. Even though Yoo Jin’s character is not the villain but an antagonist, still she is a deserving candidate for this list. Song Yoon Ah plays the role of Choi Yoo Jin, who is a woman of mid 40s, she is also a daughter from a chaebol family but is disinherited. Her father disowned her because she married a politician. And guess what, that same husband, goes behind her back every night and cheats on her on a daily basis. She is also the CEO of JSS Security, which is responsible for her presidential candidate husband’s security. Her character certainly makes some bad choices, such as separating her step-daughter from her husband and using her constantly to blackmail the man, but she is the one to hurt the most as well.
Even though her relationship with her family and husband is dianted and she is mostly used for money, she gives her everything to keep his husband’s image spotless. She grows a fondness, dare I say romantic feelings, for Kim Je Ha (Ji Chang Wook) but that too is quickly shut down as the main female lead comes into the picture. All in all, she may seem to be an evil woman but she actually is a victim of fate and betrayal, which is understandable. Song Yoon Ah’s incredible acting and her on screen chemistry with Ji Chang Wook is one of the primary reasons why you should watch the drama if you have not already.
That was all for today, we will come with another recommendation post, sooner than you think.

do you ever get a comment and just. know in your heart that it was written by a teenager
"Greatly surprised to see a non-binary character well written in a fanfic from 2015, I wasn't expecting much on that regard but it was actually pretty good even though there is no conflict around it"

THE LURE (2015)
Tumblr media
A weird little Polish musical horror film that very loosely follows the original plot of the little mermaid but more gruesome and much more tragic. As horror movies go it wasn’t very scary, but gory and moody (and incredibly artistic). You feel more compassion for the murderous creatures than the human victims (it was just in their nature for the sirens to hunt, but what were the humans doing?).
⭐⭐⭐.5
Tumblr media
THE LURE is a Polish musical horror about two mermaids that get scooped up by some crazy rockers who think they can handle two actual sirens (they cannot). We follow Silver and Golden as they traverse the land and deal with these selfish humans (who can all be controlled by the girls' shimmery voices). There appears to be a general knowledge of mermaids/sirens in this universe because their existence is not kept a secret, in fact, it is a gimmick at the club in their stripping act when they first arrive (it’s only after they establish themselves more that they can keep their legs and clothes on). It should be pointed out too that the girls are sort of like an eel-type of siren, their tails have no big fin at the end, but are still a sight to behold when they are transformed.
Tumblr media
Now, in the first few minutes our girls try to lure the two men in the band to a watery death but are caught by the female singer, so it is already well established from the get go that these two are (would-be) man eaters. Why anyone would think they could control these wildcards from the deep is beyond me, they can literally control you with a song for goodness sake! The humans look at these mystical girls with money in their eyes (or any other excuse to use the poor things) and are ready to take advantage of these seemingly innocent creatures. Except for Golden, Golden has a lot on her mind and it is mostly blood and murder. This is her nature though, we cannot really fault her for being a creature of nature. There is a part where the band finds out one of the girls killed someone so they just dump both of them in the water and leave them for dead… But they are able to get back out and get over that (mostly, 👍 ( wait)).
Tumblr media
Silver has fallen head over tail for the shaggy haired boy who will fuck anything that, well, doesn’t have a tail, and he promptly informs her that he only sees her as a fish. She uses her siren song on him to change his mind for the moment (let’s see how long this lasts) before making the choice to get her tail surgically removed and swapped for regular legs. This is apparently a surgery that the doctors are more than prepared to do (??), keeping both girls alive while sawed completely in half (neat magic trick). Silver loses her voice because of this trade but is excited to show her shaggy headed slut. Surprise! He wants something a little less complicated (like a regular human female and not a mute half-fish lady). This breaks Silver's heart and as we all know, when you break a mermaid's heart they turn to seafoam if they don’t eat you, so Golden encourages Silver to eat him… But Silver is too sweet. She turns to seafoam in his arms…
Tumblr media
And Golden, in her sadness and rage, goes for his throat. The reception is shocked, two people are gone (though most will only ever miss the groom) and Golden returns to the water, alone. Where she will be, alone, for ages and rages because she is a mystical being and her only friend is gone. A tragedy on all sides really. If anyone understood the other person's nature in this film maybe things would have turned out differently, but they all chose to ignore what they wanted to ignore.

CRIMSON PEAK (2015)
Tumblr media
I’ve been watching so many 1960s gothic horror films that I wanted to compare them to something more modern.
This one starts in Gilded Age Buffalo, New York.  Young Edith’s mother dies, and then Edith sees her ghost!  “Beware of Crimson Peak,” the ghost tells her.  Years later, when Edith is a grown woman, she meets Sir Thomas Sharpe.  Edith is played by Mia Wasikowska, who we saw in “Stoker” (2013) and a bunch of other movies.  Thomas is Tom Hiddleston!  He was in “Only Lovers Left Alive” (2013).  Also, Thomas’s sister, Lucille, is there.  She is Jessica Chastain!  We last saw her in “IT Chapter Two” (2019).  Anyway, Thomas is looking for investors for some clay-digging invention, and he approaches Edith’s rich dad.  Unfortunately, rich dad rebuffs him.  For some reason, Thomas and Lucille continue to hang around in Buffalo, and Thomas pursues, and then woos, Edith.  Edith’s dad hires a detective to dig up dirt on the siblings, and he eventually confronts them with some information and demands that they leave town.  Thomas stages a scene where he breaks Edith’s heart, calling her a spoiled child.  The next day Edith’s dad is at the club in the fancy bathroom, and someone kills him by bashing his head against the sink!  Edith gets a final letter from Thomas, and he explains that her father put him up to the scene.  Edith runs to the hotel, and finds that Thomas is still there, because he loves her!  Unfortunately, Edith then learns that her father is dead.  She and Thomas get married.
Tumblr media
They move to “Cumberland, England,” and arrive at “Allerdale Hall,” the seat of the Sharpe family.  It’s a huge manor house, but apparently Thomas is poor, because the ceiling is falling in.  Oh, the house is also sinking into the red-clay earth.  Thomas’s only hope is to strike it rich by finishing his clay-digging machine, so that he can dig up the red clay that permeates everything and sell it.  Also, Lucille is there, and she is predictably passive-aggressive toward Edith, such as by refusing to give her a set of a keys for the house.  Then Edith takes a bath, and there is a weird red ghost!  Then Thomas gives Edith a cup of tea!
Tumblr media
Anyway, this is a long movie, so a bunch of things happen.  Edith is preparing paperwork to liquidate her family fortune, to give to Thomas.  Back in Buffalo, Edith's childhood friend, Alan, who was the guy from “Pacific Rim” (2013), is following Edith’s father’s footsteps in investigating the Sharpes.  Edith encounters more ghosts, basically female figures in red, and these are some decent spooks.  She discovers a big travel trunk and some old wax recording cylinders and discovers that she is not Thomas’s first wife!  The previous wives have all died, poisoned via tea!  Unfortunately, Edith can't just leave. It’s winter, and the red clay turns the snow red, so that people call the manor “Crimson Peak,” which Edith’s very mother warned her about.  Edith ends up in bed, weakened by the poison.  Thomas talks to Lucille about maybe not killing her, but Lucille insists that they complete their plan.
Tumblr media
Edith gets out of bed and a ghost points her to Lucille’s room.  Edith sneaks in and sees her jerking off Thomas!  Edith runs away, but Lucille chases her and grabs her on a landing overlooking the great hall.  “I knew it,” Edith says, “you’re not his sister.”  Lucille says, “That’s delightful.  I am!”  Then she pushes Edith off the landing.  Edith bounces off the next landing below, and then lands with a thud on the snowy floor (because of the big hole in the ceiling).  Just then, Alan, her childhood friend arrives!  He is a doctor, and the Sharpes trick him into thinking that Edith fell by accident.  He sets her leg (which won’t come up again).  He then tries to take Edith away from the house, but Lucille stabs him!  (She also admits to killing their mother.)  Lucille tells Thomas to finish Alan off, but (under Alan’s guidance) Thomas only severely wounds him.  Lucille takes Edith upstairs so she can sign the final paperwork transferring her money to Thomas, and Thomas takes Alan down to the basement (which is full of big vats full of thick red liquid).  Thomas says he will return with Edith.
Tumblr media
Lucille torments Edith by burning her manuscript, saying, “You thought you were a writer.”  Lucille admits that she and Thomas had a baby, and then Edith stabs her in the chest with a pen!  She runs away and bumps into Thomas.  He tells Edith that he loves her!  He goes to Lucille and burns Edith’s paperwork, and then he suggests to Lucille that they leave Allerdale Hall and “they can all be together?”  “All?” Lucille asks, realizing that Thomas really does sort of like Edith.  She stabs Thomas a bunch of times, including in the face, and he dies.
Lucille then chases Edith through the house.  She is the vision of an enraged Jessica Chastain with bloody red hands.  She pulls out the huge cleaver that she used to kill her mother, and the women end up outside in the red-tinged show.  They finally face off, Lucille with the cleaver and Edith with a big shovel.  “I won’t stop,” Lucille says, “till you kill me or I kill you.”  Edith begs the ghost of Thomas for help, and Lucille turns around to see that very ghost!  Edith smacks Lucille across the face with the shovel, and then she bonks her on the head and kills her.  Edith finally leads Alan away from the house.  “Ghosts are real,” she says over the scene.  Ghosts driven by “a drive, loss, revenge, or love, those, they never go away.”  The ghost of Lucille plays the piano.
Tumblr media
I have some notes:
This was good overall, based mostly on the visuals and production value.  It’s a true gothic plot: woman marries a man, and then the ghosts of his former wives reveal the truth of his sinister nature!  It’s interesting, but not especially innovative, until we see that the man is also banging his sister!
This film had a huge budget, which I imagine easily outstripped any horror movie of earlier eras.  Those movies had to reuse sets, or else were limited to small, budget-conscious sets, but Allerdale Hall was a huge, custom-built location.  Also, digital technology allows us to put on screen anything we can imagine, from a street scene in 1880s Buffalo to the most gruesome of red-tinged ghosts.
The acting here was generally superior to that of all but the very best horror movies.  Earlier gothic horror movies suffer from a stiffness and artificiality to their acting, but that’s not a problem here.  Hiddleston might be one of the most charming actors…ever.  Chastain brings intensity and fervor to match any deranged killer.  Even Wasikowska, whom I’ve always thought to be a little bland and dull, does a decent job at the confused, frightened, doomed wife.
So, why isn’t this movie better?  For all its atmosphere and production value, there aren’t that many spooks.  There are so many scenes and extraneous little details that nothing is allowed to linger.  An example of this is the homage to the “green room” scene from “The Shining” (1980) (where a beautiful woman crawls of a bathtub to seduce Jack Nicolson, but she is actually a ghoul!).  That scene is over three minutes long, providing a rising sense of dread as you wonder what the hell is going on.  In “Crimson Peak,” Edith enters the bathroom and, over a few seconds, a red-tinged ghost with an axe in her head stumbles out of the tub and lurches toward Edith.  It’s little more than an extended jump scare.  Much like this entire movie, it’s very pretty, but ultimately unsatisfying.
