2023 BL/GL/QL Round-Up Post

I thought for posterity I'd post a reflection on everything I watched that completed in 2023. For me, that means anything that started in 2022 but the last episode was in 2023 is on this list, but anything that will still be airing after 31 December 2023 11:59 my time (EST) is not on this list, even if the bulk of the show did air in 2023.

A few stats:

Sadly, of the GLs that aired this year, I wouldn't recommend any of them. The best one was Show Me Love, which was not actually good but had very gorgeous women and a LOT of flirting.

The other huge thing that happened this year was that I stopped lurking! Thanks specifically to @lurkingshan and @bengiyo demanding everyone start talking about La Pluie, because they got me to post my first meta post. And because I started actually talking to people, I started making actual friends, and participated in organizing things like the Be My Favorite clown checkpoint for ep 11. I also disappeared a month because of life, and am still catching up on everything I intended to write this year. But it's been really rewarding finding this corner of tumblr with likeminded people who like good shows, like to think about these shows, and who are interested in talking about them in a way that's insightful and respectful.

It's been a long time since I felt comfortable enough participating actively in a fandom, and I just want to say to everyone I've interacted with this year: Thank you!

2023 Writing Wrap-Up

Thank you for the tag @wolfpants! This is a short one as I wrote way less in 2023 than I had planned. I did write quite a bit more than I published but those unfinished WIPs that I wanted to get up in December will have to slip into 2024. I have just three fics to share in this round up, coming in at a total of roughly 65,000 words.

The Unplottable Time Conundrum (Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy), 45k, E

When the past starts bleeding into the present at Grimmauld Place, an old academic article pulls Draco Malfoy out of his life of luxury. Haunted by the memory of a fleeting post-war kiss and thrust into the ghostly spaces inhabited by Unspeakable Harry Potter, Draco’s easy life is about to get a whole lot more complicated.

Can't Start a Fire Without a Spark (Harry Potter/Ron Weasley), 8k, E

It’s getting harder to hear about Harry’s casual one-night stands, but Ron can’t work out why. He meets plenty of women, he wants his friend to be happy and it can’t be jealousy, because Ron is straight. Isn’t he?

Running this tournament has been really fun, a good distraction from post-grad limbo, and (as it was last year), a good opportunity to promote a positive Jewish experience online, which we can always use more of. It's not just where we see our stories, it's where we see them done with quality, care, and kindness. That's what being a Nice Jewish Character means -- not necessarily nice as in kind, nice as in substantial. Nice as in "oh, I see myself in this narrative, that's pretty nice." These characters thrive off of the Jewish people behind the scenes who fought to make them authentic, and the fans who have pieced together the narrative threads, the people who have made media Jewish just by their consumption of it.

something so flawed and free — Chapters 3 & 4 by hopeless_nostalgia (England/Japan) After a year of convoluted diplomacy, all fell apart and war was declared between Japan and Russia. "It might be a long while before we are able to meet again," Kiku writes to his ally. It feels as though the distance between them has become wider, and in the midst of this gale, the only way for them to communicate is through slow letters and short telegrams. A continuation of hide and seek. But I *think* you can understand this just fine without reading it.

Call To Alms — Chapter 8: Crash and Burn by DoomSpiral (Lithuania/Prussia, Lithuania/Russia) Gilbert Beilschmidt scrapes the gallows by the skin of his teeth--and promptly makes this everyone else's problem, as per usual. Tolys Laurinaitas returns to Moscow after the war only to find he has less of a grasp on his role at the estate, and his self control, than he thought. They make it through (hand in unlovable hand). Alternatively: After the second world war comes to a close, Tolys and Gilbert are forced to work through a graveyard of old memories, and reluctantly come to new terms with each other.

An Unexpected Reunion by DubiouslyKind (America/England) Alfred is a busy college student convinced by his best friend to attend a concert. When he arrives to see an infamous band play with Arthur at the head, he gets more than he bargained for - and the cost may be more than either of them were willing to pay.

Expect the Unexpected by DubiouslyKind (America/England, America & England) Arthur sees the garage lights on in the middle of the night. What he discovered was certainly not what he was expecting.

2:30 by Delgumo (Canada/Russia) It’s two in the morning and Matthew Williams has an important choice to make: To go home and watch TV or see his off-and-on (currently off) boyfriend. He finds the choice fairly obvious, however irresponsible it may be.

I Have A Better Deal by Skoati (Ketzexi) (Germany/nyo!Russia) Ludwig is a demon who keeps getting summoned by one human for the wrong reason.

A Gift For Italy by Skoati (Ketzexi) (Germany/nyo!North Italy) Germany got a present for Italy, but her reaction isn't as expected.

Muses by FangsofLightening (South Italy/Spain) Romano was searching for a muse. He found one in Antonio, and so much more.

Some Things Are Best Left Unforgotten — Chapter 1: An Object in Motion by DubiouslyKind (America/England) The son of a demon and a witch meets a fairy when he was a child. As an adult, they continue to meet throughout different lifetimes. Arthur cannot escape him or their complicated past, but he is unsure if he really wants to either.

She's so different than the type of Hawke I usually play, being Red-Purple and leaning into the politicking aspect of her role in Kirkwall. I've loved exploring a Hawke who doesn't run away from Kirkwall, who stays and works within the system to make things better. And of course writing her different dynamics with Loghain and Sebastian have been both interesting and challenging for me creatively.

total # of completed works: SO. there's about five different answers here, i'm afraid 🤣😭 in terms of AO3 fic, it's 14 fics. but it's 10 if you only count fics written solely by me (i.e. not collaboration works) and 9 if you count only works posted to my public AO3. if you include tumblr fics to the count, though, it's... 6 more than that. (don't worry, i'm confused too. let's just say it's 13 because lucky thirteen, no?)

total word count: according to AO3, it's 209,660 (pause for me to whisper, jesus christ). that's not quite accurate, though, because it doesn't include the tumblr fic word counts - so the most true reflection is probably that it's somewhere around 216000 words. which... yeah. oh my god, i am insane. what’s your own favorite creation of the year: OOOH, this is a difficult one!! (don't ask me to choose between my children, etc etc.) but if i really have to pick just one... probably my dragon riders AU? i was rereading it again the other day, and just... you know what? do you have any fandom goals for the new year: oh my god, do i EVER. i've actually had a little "fandom new year's resolutions: 2024 version" post sitting in my drafts for a good long while now, so i'm going to link that here to hold myself even more accountable. let's do this, baby.

most popular creation of the year: not very surprisingly, it's my 2023 kisses fic, AKA your lips my lips (apocalypse). this is... my longest WIP to date, yup. 10 chapters down, 23 to go. personally, there was something VERY satisfying about processing each race by writing a smutty/kissy chapter about it 🤭 and apparently, the f1 rpf readership agreed with me about that! much obliged. also, god, i love you all so much. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE SUPPORT 😭❤️❤️

under-appreciated creation of the year: ough! this is also a hard one, because i don't want to seem ungrateful for what has frankly been an AMAZING year full of an incredible amount of support. truly, my followers, my friends: you all are so, so unbelievably wonderful, and i appreciate each and every one of you ENDLESSLY. but... that's not the question. to actually give an answer: one fic that i do selfishly wish would've blown up more/reached more people is my boyband au, i want to write you a song. because of the sheer amount of time i poured into that, and also because of the extreme sentimental value it has for me in that it combines my two favourite-ever rpf fandoms... yeah. i do so wish it would've gained a little more traction than it ended up getting. BUT like i said: this is very much a selfish wish, and i am fully aware that this is quite a niche fic, in its way. still, though - if there was one fic response i could change from last year, it would be this one.

most fun thing to make: another "don't make me choose between my children" type question!! 🙈 but honestly... i think that prize would probably go to "... And My Heart Is With You," because working with Tia is always fucking INCREDIBLE, and also because this idea was just such a delight to create and write 😍❤️

most unintentionally telling thing: oh dear. probably, um... my first a/b/o fic. the thing is, i never even used to LIKE a/b/o. but my besties told me that the possessiveness-soulmatism of it all would actually work really well for me, and... they were right. let's just say, they were 1016% right.

equally though, my 2023 kisses fic? especially that chapter 8/9... yeah. uh. YEAH.

biggest surprise: the fact that i managed to add up over two HUNDRED thousand words for this fandom??? even despite two rather significant writer's block stretches, a job move and a move of house? that's... i'm incredibly proud of that, honestly. and i never could've done it without all of you, my most beloved friends-in-my-phone. thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for doing 2023 with me. here's to an even crazier, better 2024 <3333
