An App Does Not a Master Naturalist Make
Originally posted on my website at https://rebeccalexa.com/app-not-master-naturalist/ - I had written this as an op-ed and sent it to WaPo, but they had no interest, so you get to read it here instead!
I have mixed feelings about Michael Coren’s April 25 Washington Post article, “These 4 free apps can help you identify every flower, plant and tree around you.” His ebullience at exploring some of the diverse ecological community around him made me grin, because I know exactly what it feels like. There’s nothing like that sense of wonder and belonging when you go outside and are surrounded by neighbors of many species, instead of a monotonous wall of green, and that is a big part of what led me to become a Master Naturalist.
When I moved from the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest in 2006, I felt lost because I didn’t recognize many of the animals or plants in my new home. So I set about systematically learning every species that crossed my path. Later, I began teaching community-level classes on nature identification to help other people learn skills and tools for exploring their local flora, fauna, and fungi.
Tumblr media
Threeleaf foamflower (Tiarella trifoliata)
Let me be clear: I love apps. I use Merlin routinely to identify unknown bird songs, and iNaturalist is my absolute favorite ID app, period. But these tools are not 100% flawless.
For one thing, they’re only as good as the data you provide them. iNaturalist’s algorithms, for example, rely on a combination of photos (visual data), date and time (seasonal data), and GPS coordinates (location data) to make initial identification suggestions. These algorithms sift through the 135-million-plus observations uploaded to date, finding observations that have similar visual, seasonal, and location data to yours.
There have been many times over the years where iNaturalist isn’t so sure. Take this photo of a rather nondescript clump of grass. Without seed heads to provide extra clues, the algorithms offer an unrelated assortment of species, with only one grass. I’ve gotten that “We’re not confident enough to make a recommendation” message countless times over my years of using the app, often suggesting species that are clearly not what I’m looking at in real life.
Tumblr media
Because iNaturalist usually offers up multiple options, you have to decide which one is the best fit. Sometimes it’s the first species listed, but sometimes it’s not. This becomes trickier if all the species that are suggested look alike. Tree-of-Heaven (Ailanthus altissima), smooth sumac (Rhus glabra) and eastern black walnut (Juglans nigra) all have pinnately compound, lanceolate leaves, and young plants of these three species can appear quite similar. If all you know how to do is point and click your phone’s camera, you aren’t going to be able to confidently choose which of the three plants is the right one.
Tumblr media
Coren correctly points out that both iNaturalist and Pl@ntNet do offer more information on suggested species—if people are willing to take the time to look. Too many assume ID apps will give an easy, instant answer. In watching my students use the app in person almost everyone just picks the first species in the list. It’s not until I demonstrate how to access the additional content for each species offered that anyone thinks to question the algorithms’ suggestions.
While iNaturalist is one of the tools I incorporate into my classes, I emphasize that apps in general are not to be used alone, but in conjunction with field guides, websites, and other resources. Nature identification, even on a casual level, requires critical thinking and observation skills if you want to make sure you’re correct. Coren’s assertion that you only need a few apps demonstrates a misunderstanding of a skill that takes time and practice to develop properly—and accurately.
Speaking of oversimplification, apps are not a Master Naturalist in your pocket, and that statement —while meant as a compliment–does a disservice to the thousands of Master Naturalists across the country. While the training curricula vary from state to state, they are generally based in learning how organisms interact within habitats and ecosystems, often drawing on a synthesis of biology, geology, hydrology, climatology, and other natural sciences. A Master Naturalist could tell you not only what species you’re looking at, but how it fits into this ecosystem, how its adaptations are different from a related species in another ecoregion, and so forth.
Tumblr media
Map showing Level III and IV ecoregions of Oregon, the basis of my training as an Oregon Master Naturalist.
In spite of my criticisms, I do think that Coren was absolutely onto something when he described the effects of using the apps. Seeing the landscape around you turn from a green background to a vibrant community of living beings makes going outside a more exciting, personal experience. I and my fellow nature nerds share an intense curiosity about the world around us. And that passion, more than any app or other tool, is fundamental to becoming a citizen naturalist, Master or otherwise.
Did you enjoy this post? Consider taking one of my online foraging and natural history classes or hiring me for a guided nature tour, checking out my other articles, or picking up a paperback or ebook I’ve written! You can even buy me a coffee here!

NASA’s TESS spots record-breaking stellar triplets
Professional and amateur astronomers teamed up with artificial intelligence to find an unmatched stellar trio called TIC 290061484, thanks to cosmic “strobe lights” captured by NASA’s TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite).
The system contains a set of twin stars orbiting each other every 1.8 days, and a third star that circles the pair in just 25 days. The discovery smashes the record for shortest outer orbital period for this type of system, set in 1956, which had a third star orbiting an inner pair in 33 days.
“Thanks to the compact, edge-on configuration of the system, we can measure the orbits, masses, sizes, and temperatures of its stars,” said Veselin Kostov, a research scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California. “And we can study how the system formed and predict how it may evolve.”
A paper, led by Kostov, describing the results was published in The Astrophysical Journal Oct. 2.
Flickers in starlight helped reveal the tight trio, which is located in the constellation Cygnus. The system happens to be almost flat from our perspective. This means the stars each cross right in front of, or eclipse, each other as they orbit. When that happens, the nearer star blocks some of the farther star’s light.
Using machine learning, scientists filtered through enormous sets of starlight data from TESS to identify patterns of dimming that reveal eclipses. Then, a small team of citizen scientists filtered further, relying on years of experience and informal training to find particularly interesting cases.
These amateur astronomers, who are co-authors on the new study, met as participants in an online citizen science project called Planet Hunters, which was active from 2010 to 2013. The volunteers later teamed up with professional astronomers to create a new collaboration called the Visual Survey Group, which has been active for over a decade.
“We’re mainly looking for signatures of compact multi-star systems, unusual pulsating stars in binary systems, and weird objects,” said Saul Rappaport, an emeritus professor of physics at MIT in Cambridge. Rappaport co-authored the paper and has helped lead the Visual Survey Group for more than a decade. “It’s exciting to identify a system like this because they’re rarely found, but they may be more common than current tallies suggest.” Many more likely speckle our galaxy, waiting to be discovered.
Partly because the stars in the newfound system orbit in nearly the same plane, scientists say it’s likely very stable despite their tight configuration (the trio’s orbits fit within a smaller area than Mercury’s orbit around the Sun). Each star’s gravity doesn’t perturb the others too much, like they could if their orbits were tilted in different directions.
But while their orbits will likely remain stable for millions of years, “no one lives here,” Rappaport said. “We think the stars formed together from the same growth process, which would have disrupted planets from forming very closely around any of the stars.” The exception could be a distant planet orbiting the three stars as if they were one.
As the inner stars age, they will expand and ultimately merge, triggering a supernova explosion in around 20 to 40 million years.
In the meantime, astronomers are hunting for triple stars with even shorter orbits. That’s hard to do with current technology, but a new tool is on the way.
Images from NASA’s upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will be much more detailed than TESS’s. The same area of the sky covered by a single TESS pixel will fit more than 36,000 Roman pixels. And while TESS took a wide, shallow look at the entire sky, Roman will pierce deep into the heart of our galaxy where stars crowd together, providing a core sample rather than skimming the whole surface.
“We don’t know much about a lot of the stars in the center of the galaxy except for the brightest ones,” said Brian Powell, a co-author and data scientist at Goddard. “Roman’s high-resolution view will help us measure light from stars that usually blur together, providing the best look yet at the nature of star systems in our galaxy.”
And since Roman will monitor light from hundreds of millions of stars as part of one of its main surveys, it will help astronomers find more triple star systems in which all the stars eclipse each other.
“We’re curious why we haven’t found star systems like these with even shorter outer orbital periods,” said Powell. “Roman should help us find them and bring us closer to figuring out what their limits might be.”
Roman could also find eclipsing stars bound together in even larger groups — half a dozen, or perhaps even more all orbiting each other like bees buzzing around a hive.
“Before scientists discovered triply eclipsing triple star systems, we didn’t expect them to be out there,” said co-author Tamás Borkovits, a senior research fellow at the Baja Observatory of The University of Szeged in Hungary. “But once we found them, we thought, well why not? Roman, too, may reveal never-before-seen categories of systems and objects that will surprise astronomers.”
TESS is a NASA Astrophysics Explorer mission managed by NASA Goddard and operated by MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Additional partners include Northrop Grumman, based in Falls Church, Virginia; NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley; the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian in Cambridge, Massachusetts; MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory; and the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. More than a dozen universities, research institutes, and observatories worldwide are participants in the mission.
IMAGE: This artist’s concept illustrates how tightly the three stars in the system called TIC 290061484 orbit each other. If they were placed at the center of our solar system, all the stars’ orbits would be contained a space smaller than Mercury’s orbit around the Sun. The sizes of the triplet stars and the Sun are also to scale. Credit NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center

Sorry for not posting in a few days. I was working out how to use a new (to me) data visualization tool. I have plans for something a bit more interesting with it, but this is my starting place. It's a bar chart race showing the changes in element users over time. I included the timeline in this one because I've made a line graph depicting this data before, and I was using it as a comparison.
Because I was taking the count weekly from the release of Genshin, I thought that it would always line up with the banner releases, but at some point, it seems that the releases are just slightly off. The 4.7 second-half banner will be starting on June 25, 2024, yet just adding seven days to the prior date starting with September 28, 2020 ended up at June 24, 2024. I double-checked the fandom wiki, and it looks like there was one update that lasted one day extra and one that was two days short.

Must-Have Programmatic SEO Tools for Superior Rankings
Tumblr media
Understanding Programmatic SEO
What is programmatic SEO?
Programmatic SEO uses automated tools and scripts to scale SEO efforts. In contrast to traditional SEO, where huge manual efforts were taken, programmatic SEO extracts data and uses automation for content development, on-page SEO element optimization, and large-scale link building. This is especially effective on large websites with thousands of pages, like e-commerce platforms, travel sites, and news portals.
The Power of SEO Automation
The automation within SEO tends to consume less time, with large content levels needing optimization. Using programmatic tools, therefore, makes it easier to analyze vast volumes of data, identify opportunities, and even make changes within the least period of time available. This thus keeps you ahead in the competitive SEO game and helps drive more organic traffic to your site.
Top Programmatic SEO Tools
Tumblr media
1. Screaming Frog SEO Spider
The Screaming Frog is a multipurpose tool that crawls websites to identify SEO issues. Amongst the things it does are everything, from broken links to duplication of content and missing metadata to other on-page SEO problems within your website. Screaming Frog shortens a procedure from thousands of hours of manual work to hours of automated work.
Example: It helped an e-commerce giant fix over 10,000 broken links and increase their organic traffic by as much as 20%.
2. Ahrefs
Ahrefs is an all-in-one SEO tool that helps you understand your website performance, backlinks, and keyword research. The site audit shows technical SEO issues, whereas its keyword research and content explorer tools help one locate new content opportunities.
Example: A travel blog that used Ahrefs for sniffing out high-potential keywords and updating its existing content for those keywords grew search visibility by 30%.
3. SEMrush
SEMrush is the next well-known, full-featured SEO tool with a lot of features related to keyword research, site audit, backlink analysis, and competitor analysis. Its position tracking and content optimization tools are very helpful in programmatic SEO.
Example: A news portal leveraged SEMrush to analyze competitor strategies, thus improving their content and hoisting themselves to the first page of rankings significantly.
4. Google Data Studio
Google Data Studio allows users to build interactive dashboards from a professional and visualized perspective regarding SEO data. It is possible to integrate data from different sources like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and third-party tools while tracking SEO performance in real-time.
Example: Google Data Studio helped a retailer stay up-to-date on all of their SEO KPIs to drive data-driven decisions that led to a 25% organic traffic improvement.
5. Python
Python, in general, is a very powerful programming language with the ability to program almost all SEO work. You can write a script in Python to scrape data, analyze huge datasets, automate content optimization, and much more.
Example: A marketing agency used Python for thousands of product meta-description automations. This saved the manual time of resources and improved search rank.
The How for Programmatic SEO
Step 1: In-Depth Site Analysis
Before diving into programmatic SEO, one has to conduct a full site audit. Such technical SEO issues, together with on-page optimization gaps and opportunities to earn backlinks, can be found with tools like Screaming Frog, Ahrefs, and SEMrush.
Step 2: Identify High-Impact Opportunities
Use the data collected to figure out the biggest bang-for-buck opportunities. Look at those pages with the potential for quite a high volume of traffic, but which are underperforming regarding the keywords focused on and content gaps that can be filled with new or updated content.
Step 3: Content Automation
This is one of the most vital parts of programmatic SEO. Scripts and tools such as the ones programmed in Python for the generation of content come quite in handy for producing significant, plentiful, and high-quality content in a short amount of time. Ensure no duplication of content, relevance, and optimization for all your target keywords.
Example: An e-commerce website generated unique product descriptions for thousands of its products with a Python script, gaining 15% more organic traffic.
Step 4: Optimize on-page elements
Tools like Screaming Frog and Ahrefs can also be leveraged to find loopholes for optimizing the on-page SEO elements. This includes meta titles, meta descriptions, headings, or even adding alt text for images. Make these changes in as effective a manner as possible.
Step 5: Build High-Quality Backlinks
Link building is one of the most vital components of SEO. Tools to be used in this regard include Ahrefs and SEMrush, which help identify opportunities for backlinks and automate outreach campaigns. Begin to acquire high-quality links from authoritative websites.
Example: A SaaS company automated its link-building outreach using SEMrush, landed some wonderful backlinks from industry-leading blogs, and considerably improved its domain authority. ### Step 6: Monitor and Analyze Performance
Regularly track your SEO performance on Google Data Studio. Analyze your data concerning your programmatic efforts and make data-driven decisions on the refinement of your strategy.

Decoding Time Series Analysis: Navigating Complex Numerical Challenges in Statistics Without the Fuss of Equations
Time Series Analysis stands as a robust and indispensable tool within the realm of statistics, providing us with the means to unveil intricate patterns and trends concealed within temporal data. In the course of this enlightening blog post, we shall embark on a comprehensive exploration of two demanding numerical questions at the graduate level. Our objective is to delve into the intricacies of dissecting time series data, all while steering clear of any daunting equations. So, fasten your analytical seatbelts as we journey through the rich landscape of these real-world problems, armed with the knowledge that will undoubtedly help with statistics assignment using R. Let's collectively hone our statistical acumen and confront these challenges head-on!
Question 1:
Consider a time series dataset representing the monthly sales of a product over the last three years. The sales data is as follows:
Year 1:
Month 1: 120 units
Month 2: 150 units
Month 3: 180 units
...
Month 12: 200 units
Year 2:
Month 13: 220 units
Month 14: 250 units
Month 15: 280 units
...
Month 24: 300 units
Year 3:
Month 25: 320 units
Month 26: 350 units
Month 27: 380 units
...
Month 36: 400 units
a) Calculate the moving average for a window size of 3 months for the entire time series.
b) Identify any seasonality patterns in the data and explain how they may impact sales forecasting.
c) Use a suitable decomposition method to break down the time series into its trend, seasonal, and residual components.
Answer:
a) Moving Average Calculation:
For Month 3, Moving Average = (120 + 150 + 180) / 3 = 150 units
For Month 4, Moving Average = (150 + 180 + 200) / 3 = 176.67 units
Continue this calculation for the entire time series.
b) Seasonality Patterns:
Seasonality can be observed by comparing the average sales for each month across the three years.
For example, if the average sales for January is consistently lower than other months, it indicates a seasonality pattern.
c) Decomposition:
Use a method such as additive or multiplicative decomposition to separate the time series into trend, seasonal, and residual components.
The trend component represents the overall direction of sales.
The seasonal component captures recurring patterns.
The residual component accounts for random fluctuations.
Question 2:
You are provided with a monthly time series dataset representing the stock prices of a company over the last five years. The stock prices are as follows:
Year 1: $50, $55, $60, $52, $48, ..., $58
Year 2: $60, $65, $70, $62, $58, ..., $68
Year 3: $70, $75, $80, $72, $68, ..., $78
Year 4: $80, $85, $90, $82, $78, ..., $88
Year 5: $90, $95, $100, $92, $88, ..., $98
a) Calculate the percentage change in stock prices from one year to the next.
b) Apply a suitable smoothing technique (e.g., exponential smoothing) to forecast the stock prices for the next three months.
c) Assess the stationarity of the time series and suggest any transformations needed for better forecasting.
Answer:
a) Percentage Change Calculation:
For Year 2, Percentage Change = [(Stock Price in Year 2 - Stock Price in Year 1) / Stock Price in Year 1] * 100
Repeat this calculation for the subsequent years.
b) Exponential Smoothing:
Use the exponential smoothing formula to forecast the stock prices for the next three months.
c) Stationarity Assessment:
Use statistical tests or visual inspection to assess stationarity.
If non-stationarity is detected, consider transformations such as differencing to achieve stationarity for better forecasting.
Conclusion:
As we conclude our exploration of these graduate-level time series analysis questions, we've unraveled the complexities of analyzing sales and stock price data. From moving averages to decomposition and from percentage change to exponential smoothing, these exercises showcase the versatility and power of time series analysis in extracting meaningful insights from temporal datasets. Armed with these skills, statisticians and data analysts can make informed predictions and contribute to sound decision-making in various fields. So, next time you encounter a time series conundrum, approach it with confidence and the analytical prowess gained from mastering these challenging questions.

Today, we will delve deep into the essentials, dispel common misconceptions, and provide insights to help you elevate your A/B testing game and drive unparalleled success in the competitive online landscape.
Unpacking A/B Testing: A Strategic Overview
What is A/B Testing?
At its core, A/B testing, also known as split testing, involves the systematic comparison of two versions of a webpage, email, or digital asset to determine which performs better based on user behavior. Far more than a marketing buzzword, A/B testing is a strategic approach to refining your campaigns and gaining a deeper understanding of what resonates with your audience.
How A/B Testing Works
In the realm of marketing, A/B testing involves presenting 50% of visitors with “Version A” (the control) and 50% with “Version B” (the variant). The version with the highest conversion rate emerges victorious, guiding your future strategies. It's a continuous cycle of refinement where the winning variant becomes the new control, prompting the creation of a fresh variant later.
It's important to note that A/B test conversion rates can sometimes be an imperfect measure of success. Strategic tracking, following the value of a conversion through to the final sale, is essential for meaningful insights.
A/B/n Testing: Expanding the Horizon
Taking A/B testing to the next level, A/B/n Testing lets you test multiple variants against the control. This approach enables a more nuanced understanding of user preferences by presenting different versions to distinct segments of your audience.
The Timing Conundrum: How Long Should A/B Tests Run?
For meaningful results, run your A/B test for at least one, preferably two, full business cycles. Don't prematurely conclude the test just because of some statistical significance; meeting the predetermined sample size is key. Run tests in full-week increments to account for variations in traffic sources and day-of-week dynamics.
Understanding the rationale behind the two-business-cycle rule is critical. It allows you to see factors like contemplative buyers, diverse traffic sources, and anomalies.
Unlocking the Power of A/B Testing: Why Should You Bother?
Consider this scenario: you invest $100 in Facebook ads, sending 10 people to your site with an average order value of $25. A/B testing allows you to optimize, turning a potential loss into profit by improving conversion rates. Beyond financial gains, A/B testing reveals invaluable insights that extend beyond individual tests, informing your overall store optimization strategy.
The Maze of Choices: What Should You A/B Test?
While the beauty of A/B testing lies in its adaptability, I cannot tell what you should test. Instead, I encourage a data-informed approach. Base your tests on qualitative and quantitative analyses. Consider factors like technical performance, on-site surveys, customer interviews, analytics, user testing, and session replays.
A/B Testing Tools: Navigating the Landscape
Explore the variety of A/B testing tools to optimize your digital strategies. Here are some popular tools:

Navigating the Sea of Ideas: Prioritizing A/B Test Ideas
With a plethora of A/B test ideas, prioritization is key. Consider frameworks like ICE (Impact, Confidence, Ease), PIE (Potential, Importance, Ease), or PXL (CXL's prioritization framework). These frameworks guide you in evaluating factors such as impact, confidence, ease of implementation, potential reach, and importance.
Conclusion
Mastering A/B testing is not just about following best practices but tailoring them to your business. Embrace a data-centric approach, refine your strategies, and elevate your e-commerce success through the power of A/B testing!
It's not just a tool; it's your path to unlocking the full potential of your online store.

‘Is blogging still relevant in the age of TikToks and Instagram?’;
Hey there, fellow internet wanderer! 🌟 Have you ever wondered about the evolution of online content and how platforms like TikTok and Instagram have taken the digital world by storm? They've undeniably changed how we consume and create content, leaving many questioning the relevance of good old-fashioned blogging. The relevancy of blogging, in contrast to short digestive video media, i.e. tiktoks or reels, is similar to that of newspapers and magazines in an era of digital information at one's fingertips. So, let's dive right in and explore whether blogging still holds its own in this fast-paced age of snappy videos and stunning visuals.
Tumblr media
The Rise of Micro-Content
TikTok, with its short, engaging videos, and Instagram, with its visually captivating images, have undeniably changed the game regarding content consumption. Their content format is tailored to suit our fast-paced lives, providing bite-sized information and entertainment. The attention span of the modern audience is shrinking, partly due to the sheer volume of information available at our fingertips. Micro-content platforms have recognized this shift and optimized their content to cater to this trend. They present information concisely and visually appealingly, making it easier for users to absorb and enjoy.
Tumblr media
Imagine scrolling through your feed and, in a matter of seconds, you've laughed at a 15-second comedy sketch on TikTok or been inspired by a stunning photograph on Instagram. These platforms have mastered grabbing and retaining attention within a few moments. However, does this rise of micro-content signal the end of traditional, long-form blogging? Not quite.
Blogs: The In-Depth Experience
While micro-content provides a quick fix for entertainment or information, blogs offer a more substantial and in-depth experience. They allow for a deeper topic exploration, providing a comprehensive understanding beyond the surface. Blogs often incorporate research, personal experiences, and a variety of perspectives, offering readers a holistic view of the subject matter. The narrative nature of blogs allows for storytelling, which can be a powerful tool to engage and captivate readers. It's akin to having a conversation where the writer shares their thoughts, insights, and knowledge conversationally, fostering a strong connection with the reader. Blogging is as effective a marketing tool as ever. In fact, it's supercharged. A recent study by Data Box, “The Shift in Your Content Marketing Mix: 25 Marketers On What's Changed in 2 Years”, showed that 68% of marketers find blogging more effective than they did 2 years ago. https://nealschaffer.com/are-blogs-still-relevant-in-2019/#:~:text=Now%2C%20none%20of%20that%20has,they%20did%202%20years%20ago.
So, despite the trend towards shorter and more visually appealing content, the unique value of blogs still needs to be addressed.
Niche Expertise
Tumblr media
One of the remarkable aspects of blogs is their ability to cater to specific niches. Whether it's technology, travel, health, or lifestyle, there's a blog out there for nearly every interest imaginable. This specialization enables bloggers to delve deep into their chosen field, offering expertise and insights that might not be available in micro-content.
For instance, a tech blog could provide detailed reviews of the latest gadgets, comparing features, performance, and usability in a way that a 15-second TikTok video simply cannot.
SEO and Discoverability
Blogs have a significant edge in search engine optimization (SEO). Their longer format allows for integrating keywords, backlinks, and other SEO strategies that improve discoverability. If you're searching for detailed information on a topic, a blog post will appear at the top of your search results, providing the precise insights you want.
Tumblr media
Authenticity and Connection
Tumblr media
Blogging offers a more authentic and personal connection between the creator and the audience. Through blogs, writers can share their thoughts, experiences, and emotions genuinely and heartfeltly. Readers, in turn, feel a deeper connection to the creator, which can be challenging to achieve through short-form content. Authenticity and genuine connection are still highly valued in this digital age.
The Power of Integration
Tumblr media
In this ever-evolving digital landscape, integration is critical. Many successful content creators use a combination of platforms to maximize their reach and engagement. A well-rounded strategy might involve creating short, attention-grabbing videos on TikTok or Instagram and linking to a blog post for a more comprehensive experience. It's about finding the right balance and leveraging each platform's strengths.
The Verdict: Blogging Endures
In conclusion, blogging is not only relevant but also vital in the age of TikToks and Instagram. It provides a unique and necessary space for in-depth exploration, niche expertise, SEO-driven discoverability, authenticity, and integration. While micro-content has its allure, blogging offers a distinct and irreplaceable value that continues to attract and engage a dedicated audience.
So, whether you're a content creator or an eager information seeker, blogs remain a treasure trove of knowledge and a canvas for creativity. Embrace the ever-evolving digital world, but never underestimate the timeless power of a well-crafted blog post. Happy reading and happy blogging! 📚✍️

Cutting-Edge Satellite Tracks Lake Water Levels in Ohio River Basin
Data from the U.S.-European Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission gives researchers a detailed look at lakes and reservoirs in a U.S. watershed.
The Ohio River Basin stretches from Pennsylvania to Illinois and contains a system of reservoirs, lakes, and rivers that drains an area almost as large as France. Researchers with the SWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography) mission, a collaboration between NASA and the French space agency CNES (Centre National d’Études Spatiales), now have a new tool for measuring water levels not only in this area, which is home to more than 25 million people, but in other watersheds around the world as well.
Since early 2023, SWOT has been measuring the height of nearly all water on Earth’s surface — including oceans, lakes, reservoirs, and rivers — covering nearly the entire globe at least once every 21 days. The SWOT satellite also measures the horizontal extent of water in freshwater bodies. Earlier this year, the mission started making validated data publicly available.
“Having these two perspectives — water extent and levels — at the same time, along with detailed, frequent coverage over large areas, is unprecedented,” said Jida Wang, a hydrologist at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a member of the SWOT science team. “This is a groundbreaking, exciting aspect of SWOT.”
Researchers can use the mission’s data on water level and extent to calculate how the amount of water stored in a lake or reservoir changes over time. This, in turn, can give hydrologists a more precise picture of river discharge — how much water moves through a particular stretch of river.
The visualization above uses SWOT data from July 2023 to November 2024 to show the average water level above sea level in lakes and reservoirs in the Ohio River Basin, which drains into the Mississippi River. Yellow indicates values greater than 1,600 feet (500 meters), and dark purple represents water levels less than 330 feet (100 meters). Comparing how such levels change can help hydrologists measure water availability over time in a local area or across a watershed.
Complementing a Patchwork of Data
Historically, estimating freshwater availability for communities within a river basin has been challenging. Researchers gather information from gauges installed at certain lakes and reservoirs, from airborne surveys, and from other satellites that look at either water level or extent. But for ground-based and airborne instruments, the coverage can be limited in space and time. Hydrologists can piece together some of what they need from different satellites, but the data may or may not have been taken at the same time, or the researchers might still need to augment the information with measurements from ground-based sensors.
Even then, calculating freshwater availability can be complicated. Much of the work relies on computer models. “Traditional water models often don’t work very well in highly regulated basins like the Ohio because they have trouble representing the unpredictable behavior of dam operations,” said George Allen, a freshwater researcher at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and a member of the SWOT science team.
Many river basins in the United States include dams and reservoirs managed by a patchwork of entities. While the people who manage a reservoir may know how their section of water behaves, planning for water availability down the entire length of a river can be a challenge. Since SWOT looks at both rivers and lakes, its data can help provide a more unified view.
“The data lets water managers really know what other people in these freshwater systems are doing,” said SWOT science team member Colin Gleason, a hydrologist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
While SWOT researchers are excited about the possibilities that the data is opening up, there is still much to be done. The satellite’s high-resolution view of water levels and extent means there is a vast ocean of data that researchers must wade through, and it will take some time to process and analyze the measurements.
More About SWOT
The SWOT satellite was jointly developed by NASA and CNES, with contributions from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the UK Space Agency. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, managed for the agency by Caltech in Pasadena, California, leads the U.S. component of the project. For the flight system payload, NASA provided the Ka-band radar interferometer (KaRIn) instrument, a GPS science receiver, a laser retroreflector, a two-beam microwave radiometer, and NASA instrument operations. The Doppler Orbitography and Radioposition Integrated by Satellite system, the dual frequency Poseidon altimeter (developed by Thales Alenia Space), the KaRIn radio-frequency subsystem (together with Thales Alenia Space and with support from the UK Space Agency), the satellite platform, and ground operations were provided by CNES. The KaRIn high-power transmitter assembly was provided by CSA.
IMAGE: Data from the SWOT satellite was used to calculate average water levels for lakes and reservoirs in the Ohio River Basin from July 2023 to November 2024. Yellow indicates values greater than 1,600 feet (500 meters) above sea level; dark purple represents water levels less than 330 feet (100 meters).

Data Engineering Concepts, Tools, and Projects
All the associations in the world have large amounts of data. If not worked upon and anatomized, this data does not amount to anything. Data masterminds are the ones. who make this data pure for consideration. Data Engineering can nominate the process of developing, operating, and maintaining software systems that collect, dissect, and store the association’s data. In modern data analytics, data masterminds produce data channels, which are the structure armature.
How to become a data engineer:
While there is no specific degree requirement for data engineering, a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a related field can provide a solid foundation. Courses in databases, programming, data structures, algorithms, and statistics are particularly beneficial. Data engineers should have strong programming skills. Focus on languages commonly used in data engineering, such as Python, SQL, and Scala. Learn the basics of data manipulation, scripting, and querying databases.
Familiarize yourself with various database systems like MySQL, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or Apache Cassandra.Knowledge of data warehousing concepts, including schema design, indexing, and optimization techniques.
Data engineering tools recommendations:
Data Engineering makes sure to use a variety of languages and tools to negotiate its objects. These tools allow data masterminds to apply tasks like creating channels and algorithms in a much easier as well as effective manner.
1. Amazon Redshift: A widely used cloud data warehouse built by Amazon, Redshift is the go-to choice for many teams and businesses. It is a comprehensive tool that enables the setup and scaling of data warehouses, making it incredibly easy to use.
One of the most popular tools used for businesses purpose is Amazon Redshift, which provides a powerful platform for managing large amounts of data. It allows users to quickly analyze complex datasets, build models that can be used for predictive analytics, and create visualizations that make it easier to interpret results. With its scalability and flexibility, Amazon Redshift has become one of the go-to solutions when it comes to data engineering tasks.
2. Big Query: Just like Redshift, Big Query is a cloud data warehouse fully managed by Google. It's especially favored by companies that have experience with the Google Cloud Platform. BigQuery not only can scale but also has robust machine learning features that make data analysis much easier. 3. Tableau: A powerful BI tool, Tableau is the second most popular one from our survey. It helps extract and gather data stored in multiple locations and comes with an intuitive drag-and-drop interface. Tableau makes data across departments readily available for data engineers and managers to create useful dashboards. 4. Looker:  An essential BI software, Looker helps visualize data more effectively. Unlike traditional BI tools, Looker has developed a LookML layer, which is a language for explaining data, aggregates, calculations, and relationships in a SQL database. A spectacle is a newly-released tool that assists in deploying the LookML layer, ensuring non-technical personnel have a much simpler time when utilizing company data.
5. Apache Spark: An open-source unified analytics engine, Apache Spark is excellent for processing large data sets. It also offers great distribution and runs easily alongside other distributed computing programs, making it essential for data mining and machine learning. 6. Airflow: With Airflow, programming, and scheduling can be done quickly and accurately, and users can keep an eye on it through the built-in UI. It is the most used workflow solution, as 25% of data teams reported using it. 7. Apache Hive: Another data warehouse project on Apache Hadoop, Hive simplifies data queries and analysis with its SQL-like interface. This language enables MapReduce tasks to be executed on Hadoop and is mainly used for data summarization, analysis, and query. 8. Segment: An efficient and comprehensive tool, Segment assists in collecting and using data from digital properties. It transforms, sends, and archives customer data, and also makes the entire process much more manageable. 9. Snowflake: This cloud data warehouse has become very popular lately due to its capabilities in storing and computing data. Snowflake’s unique shared data architecture allows for a wide range of applications, making it an ideal choice for large-scale data storage, data engineering, and data science. 10. DBT: A command-line tool that uses SQL to transform data, DBT is the perfect choice for data engineers and analysts. DBT streamlines the entire transformation process and is highly praised by many data engineers.
Data Engineering  Projects:
Data engineering is an important process for businesses to understand and utilize to gain insights from their data. It involves designing, constructing, maintaining, and troubleshooting databases to ensure they are running optimally. There are many tools available for data engineers to use in their work such as My SQL, SQL server, oracle RDBMS, Open Refine, TRIFACTA, Data Ladder, Keras, Watson, TensorFlow, etc. Each tool has its strengths and weaknesses so it’s important to research each one thoroughly before making recommendations about which ones should be used for specific tasks or projects.
  Smart IoT Infrastructure:
As the IoT continues to develop, the measure of data consumed with high haste is growing at an intimidating rate. It creates challenges for companies regarding storehouses, analysis, and visualization.
  Data Ingestion:
Data ingestion is moving data from one or further sources to a target point for further preparation and analysis. This target point is generally a data storehouse, a unique database designed for effective reporting.
 Data Quality and Testing:
Understand the importance of data quality and testing in data engineering projects. Learn about techniques and tools to ensure data accuracy and consistency.
 Streaming Data:
Familiarize yourself with real-time data processing and streaming frameworks like Apache Kafka and Apache Flink. Develop your problem-solving skills through practical exercises and challenges.
Conclusion:
Data engineers are using these tools for building data systems. My SQL, SQL server and Oracle RDBMS involve collecting, storing, managing, transforming, and analyzing large amounts of data to gain insights. Data engineers are responsible for designing efficient solutions that can handle high volumes of data while ensuring accuracy and reliability. They use a variety of technologies including databases, programming languages, machine learning algorithms, and more to create powerful applications that help businesses make better decisions based on their collected data.

Independent Archive Survey
What skills do you already have in web design, web development, or site-building?
Competence Exists (>50% of respondents have this skill)
HTML
CSS
Wordpress
Competence Developing (25-49% of respondents have this skill)
Python
Other coding language
MySQL
Graphics design
Area of Need (<25% of respondents have this skill)
Drupal
Other content management system
PHP
Analysis
I debated about how best to visualize these data, which are perhaps the most complex in the survey. Being an educator and therefore used to thinking in terms of proficiency, I decided to represent the data in that way: which technical skills are most needed among potential archivists.
And, to be clear, everything on this survey is not required to run an archive. I am emphatically not a coder but have run a successful archive for many years now using first eFiction and now Drupal. I had two purposes in asking this question. First: if I make tutorial materials, where is my effort best spent? You don't have to know HTML and CSS to use Drupal, but it sure makes things (especially theming!) easier if you have at least some understanding of them. Second: where are efforts to expand options for building independent archives best directed?
On the second question, Wordpress surfaces and not for the first time. There have been various efforts and making a fanfic archive plugin for Wordpress over the years. My SWG co-admin Russandol and I even tinkered with Wordpress last year, trying to build an archive using existing plugins. From what we can find of supported plugins, it doesn't seem possible at this time.
But the data here suggest that it would be ideal if it were possible. Many fans have at least some experience with Wordpress, and some have quite a bit. The ability to provide an archive option that builds on existing competence is ideal.
I do think it's likely that respondents were underestimating their skills. I do not think that only one respondent had an expert knowledge of HTML. Unfortunately, it is difficult to define what is meant by beginner, intermediate, and expert without getting bogged down, and we fandom people are very good at imposter syndrome. ("I can't possibly be an expert in this useful thing!") I'd define "expert" as "able to do what is needed using this tool or knowing how to find information to do what is needed," and I'm guessing more than a few of the "intermediates" can in fact do this for HTML, which makes me think that all of the graphs may see an upward shift in terms of expertise levels.
What is the independent archive survey?
The independent archive survey ran from 23 June through 7 July 2023. Eighty-two respondents took the survey during that time. The survey asked about interest in independent archives and included a section for participants interested in building or volunteering for an independent archive. The survey was open to all creators and readers/viewers of fanworks.
What is an independent archive?
The survey defined an independent archive as "a website where creators can share their fanworks. What makes it 'independent' is that it is run by fans but unaffiliated with any for-profit or nonprofit corporations or organizations. Historically, independent archives have grown out of fan communities that create fanworks."
Follow the tag #independent archives for more survey results and ongoing work to restore independent archives to fandoms that want them.

proposal:
"what makes NPCs in video games do things" - NPC decision mapping (all the programming that goes into how an NPC operates and reacts to things)
"complex scientific models" - data mapping/processor/etc. (data goes in, analysis or visualization or whatever comes out)
"non-generative automation of tedious processes" - task automation (performs tedious work for the user but doesn't suggest generation)
"generative tools" generative AI (subset of AI that is generative, unlike the above examples that can only do what's in their programming; may be subtyped into LLMs and such)
so if you want video game NPCs to not collide with walls or run straight into enemy camps you might say "man I wish they put more effort into the decision mapping this escort mission is such a pain for no good reason"
if you're talking about a program that visualizes scientific models you might say "this data processor can turn years of climate data into a detailed model of changes in weather patterns over the last 25 years"
if you're talking about a bit of software that monitors air quality and sends alerts when changes happen you might say "this automation software does the work of collecting and analyzing air samples so researchers can focus on addressing any issues that appear as quickly as possible"
and if you're talking about chatGPT you might say "this type of generative AI functions off of an LLM that provides the information the software uses to determine what kinds of sentences make sense and what responses are appropriate"
