the song that the lumon employee who went down to the testing floor was humming at the beginning of 2x05 was the wreck of the edmund fitzgerald, which is about a famous shipwreck on lake superior. the song includes the line “the lake, it is said, never gives up her dead” because superior is so deep and cold that bodies sink to the bottom and are almost never recovered. it’s so cold that bodies don’t decompose, but stay perfectly frozen at the time of their death, forever trapped at the lowest level of the lake
