Note
Random question, but do you find the general skewing towards overwhelmingly No on this blog compared to the fantasy blog disheartening? interesting? expected or unexpected? I know there's still majority No results over on the fantasy blog but they seem to just be more Overwhelmingly no over here and I wonder if you had any thoughts about that. I was also wondering if your own votes tend follow the trends or have you read a lot more than what this blogs results seem to be?
hello! good question.
to start off, here are the relevant stats (as of yesterday morning; I haven’t updated with the last few results):
fantasy mean: 16.0% yes // sci-fi mean: 12.2% yes
fantasy median: 8.1% yes // sci-fi median: 6.3% yes
HOWEVER. these are being skewed by the children’s and teen/YA book results. if we look just the stats for adult books, we find that the yes rates are nearly identical:
adult fantasy mean: 11.52% yes // adult sci-fi mean: 11.47% yes
adult fantasy median: 5.3% yes // adult sci-fi median: 5.6% yes
so one answer is: the disparity is pretty much entirely due to children’s and teen/YA books. this doesn’t surprise me at all — as I noted in a previous stats post, children are way less likely to be buying their own books, so the books they read / are exposed to are much more likely to be determined by what books the adults around them have heard of, which inevitably will be mainly classics and bestsellers. as a result, children’s books people have read are more likely to have been read by lots of people — thus the higher yes results (even if the overall is still no; even for sci-fi the children’s book averages are mean 18.5% yes / median 9.2% yes, significantly higher than for adult books). and — accounting for the higher averages for fantasy — there simply is more children’s fantasy than children’s sci-fi: we’ve only had 21 children’s sci-fi polls (5% of the total), vs. 169 children’s fantasy polls (28% of the total).
I will say, it definitely feels worse that there keep being 0% yes results here, but this is first and foremost a function of the follower disparity: the fantasy blog has 1376 followers and the sci-fi blog only has 455. fewer followers = fewer votes, fewer eyes on the polls, and so fewer reblogs (and so even fewer eyes on the polls). an average poll here currently gets roughly 130-150 votes, so just under a third of followers, and that means a much higher chance of a 0% result. I have some entirely speculative theories about the follower disparity (mainly that, bluntly, most people just don’t read science fiction anymore — I think it’s telling that the most commanding yes results that released in the last 10 years have been for The Locked Tomb, which is also fantasy), but I’ve made my peace with it.
re your last question:
I actually just started compiling stats for this last week. (note that there are some minor disparities in the age demographic numbers because I moved some things around when doing the stats just for me; it doesn’t make a huge difference, though.)
for the sci-fi polls:
overall percentage of yes polls: 17/448 (3.8%) - adult: 13/389 (3.3%) - teen/YA: 2/38 (5.3%) - children’s: 2/21 (9.5%)
percentage of polls that I have read: 105/448 (23.4%) - adult: 90/384 (23.4%) - teen/YA: 5/43 (11.6%) - children’s: 10/21 (47.6%)
for the fantasy polls:
overall percentage of yes polls: 42/596 (7.0%) - adult: 10/318 (3.1%) - teen/YA: 4/107 (3.7%) - children’s: 28/169 (16.6%)
percentage of polls that I have read: 198/596 (33.2%) - adult: 118/321 (36.8%) - teen/YA: 11/113 (9.7%) - children’s: 69/161 (42.9%)
as I realized while doing a second set of stats this weekend, I wasn’t really a habitual reader of science fiction until about 2014, and as a result I’ve read very little of the classic straight white guy sci-fi that’s been posted here, which is I think mainly the kind of thing that people read as children / teens because their parents have it lying around (not that people don’t also sometimes pick it up on their own as adults! but my sense is that that’s less common). but my father isn’t a sci-fi reader and my mother mainly read stuff by women, so I’ve read all of Anne McCafffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern but, for example, no Clarke at all, only Foundation by Asimov (and it was in like 2006 and I don’t remember it at all), and only Space Cadet by Heinlein lmao. only in the past 2-3 years have I been consciously making an effort to read more pre-2000 stuff, but with the exception of a few authors (Butler, Delany, and Le Guin) it’s still been very scattered.

my spreadsheet (public version)
so i have this spreadsheet that i use for prompts for this fandom, comprised of several prompt lists and the exact order of which is not easily publicly available. if you want to send me a prompt, send me a ship and a number between 1-725 (subject to change) and receive a sort of mystery box surprise of a fic. through the use of this list, you can see what prompts have already been done. if it’s for another ship, you can certainly send me the same prompt that was already used in another fic. if a prompt has been used three times, that prompt will be closed. thank you for your cooperation <3 listing under the cut!
possible progress statuses: prompted, in progress, editing, posted. if a prompt does not have one of these statuses, it has not been sent in thus far.

The lights are too bright, the noises are too loud, the pounding in your head is too strong. The beating of your heart gets quicker by the second and while you try your best to keep your expression neutral, you're not really succeeding at it as your features slowly transform into distressed ones. Din, who is walking at your side and carrying a sleeping Grogu in his arms, turns to look at you.
"What's wrong?" he asks tilting his head slightly. The words get stuck in your mouth, you don’t know how to tell him that after your last encounter with the Empire you don’t do so well in noisy towns, surrounded by strangers who could turn into enemies way too quickly. So far, you had avoided the topic, staying on the ship made you believe that if you let enough time pass then the feelings would subdue. You curse at yourself for thinking that you’d be able to handle this. You don’t want to worry Din, you can take care of yourself after all this had been your mistake.
"Nothing, I’m fine, let's go, we're almost there," you reply with a smile that doesn’t reach your eyes. You’re only about five minutes away from the Razor Crest, once you get on the ship and away from all the ruckus, you’ll be able to calm down. You put your shaking hands in your pockets and fidget with the newly acquired credits you got from the bounty you delivered a few minutes ago.
You keep walking and only when Din stands in front of you blocking the path, you notice how fast and irregular your breathing is, as well as the light layer of sweat covering your skin. Din places a hand on your cheek and carefully moves your head so you’re staring at him.
"What's wrong?" he asks again, his tone concerned but gentle.
"It’s too much," you finally tell him while gesturing at the busy street, not sure he’d get what the problem is, but he looks around for a couple of seconds until he spots something. Taking your hand he guides you to a nearby alley, where there aren’t any people making it a quieter place.
“Sit,” he says gesturing to a box on the floor. Once you do he crouches down and places a hand on your knee. You can feel the panic attack simmering on your chest and you know it's only a matter of seconds before it hits you with full force. Due to your breathing speeding up, there’s not enough oxygen entering your body and you start to feel lightheaded, the only thing grounding you being Din's touch. But not even that can distract you enough from the external stimuli and the internal mess.
The man seems to realize this. He places the still sleeping child next to you and takes his hands to his helmet. With a swift motion, he takes it off, revealing a concerned expression on his face. Somewhere in the back of your mind, you notice this is the first time he’s without his helmet in a place that isn’t the razor crest.
“It’s okay, breathe with me,” he tells you while taking a deep breath. You try mirroring him but the noise keeps getting louder and louder and you have to take your hands to your ears to try to keep it at bay. You feel tears forming in your eyes, and you close them in an attempt to stop them from falling. He caresses your cheek until you open your eyes again, confusion washing over your expression when you see him handing you his helmet.
"This will help muffle the noise," his voice gets to you through the racket. "May I?" he asks moving the helmet up a bit, when you nod and lower your hands he carefully places it on your head. Immediately the noise and the brightness are toned down and you feel like you can finally breathe.
"Is that better?” he asks, his gaze never leaving your eyes. You nod as he gives you a small smile and places a hand on your arm, drawing circles with his thumb onto your skin. You focus on him, on the disheveled hair and the stubble on his cheeks, on his kind brown eyes and the way they look at you as if you were his entire universe, on the feeling of his hand on your arm, his touch confident but gentle. Little by little your breathing evens out until it’s completely normal.
Once you’re sure you have recovered enough to be able to walk, you take the helmet off and hand it back to him.
“Thank you,” you tell him.
"Let's go home," Din says. Taking back his helmet from you he places a kiss on your forehead before putting it on. He picks up Grogu who stirs in his sleep but doesn’t wake up. He places his free hand on yours and you intertwine your fingers. As you step out of the alley and into the street, there’s still panic inside you but there’s also a feeling of safety, you know that as long as you’re with Din he won’t let anything bad happen.

As the night sky slowly turns into day the last people in the bar, most of them regulars, go home, their words slurring when they say goodbye and promise to be back soon. You wave at them from behind the counter like every night, a tired but friendly smile on your face. Once the last customer leaves you collapse on the nearest chair and check your communicator for any messages. You’re supposed to be meeting your best friend in a couple of hours for your belated birthday celebration. You notice a message has arrived, but your illusion and happiness are quickly replaced by disappointment as you read the words.
Work is busy today. Really sorry. Raincheck?
Sighing and without bothering to answer you put the communicator away. You wouldn’t mind him canceling your plans had this not been the third time in a row in no less than two weeks. Was his work really taking that much time or did he just not want to make an effort to see you? Locking away your thoughts and the pain nagging at your heart you decide this is a problem for future you, one who doesn’t have to wash a dozen of glasses in order to finish her shift.
You round the glasses into the counter and proceed to arrange the alcohol bottles when out of the corner of your eye you see movement. With your breath speeding up you hold the bottle as if it was a weapon and walk over there. As you approach the spot you see it’s no other than the Mandalorian, his untouched drink on the table. In the commotion of the night, you thought you saw him leaving a long time ago but guess you had been wrong.
“Just because you’re a semi-regular client doesn’t mean you can sleep here, sorry,” you tell him, plopping down on the opposite seat. A couple of seconds pass and he doesn’t move, making you wonder if he has already dozed off. What are you going to do if he has? It’s not like you can leave him here, your boss, who wasn’t particularly fond of the man, wouldn’t appreciate that decision.
“I’ll be on my way,” he replies startling you out of your thoughts. After your initial surprise has worn off, you reflect on the sadness that tints his otherwise neutral voice. He reaches into his pocket and places some credits on the table, more than enough to pay for the untouched drink. He is about to stand when you stop him by resting your hand on top of his. He looks at you in surprise, but you pretend not to notice, picking the glass with your other hand and turning it around, letting the liquid flow from one side to the other.
“I don’t know what you’re dealing with, but whatever it is this could help.” He nods and takes the glass from you. “Just you and me here and I’m going to the back for a bit so feel free to you know, take that off,” you motion to his helmet. Tapping his hand one last time you stand up.
“Thank you.”
“Of course,” you grin. “Anything for my favorite Mandalorian.” You blow him a kiss and could swear he softly chuckles in response.
There’s really nothing for you to do in the back, inventory is not due until next week. You decide to count until one hundred, that ought to be enough time for him to drink his beverage in peace. You’re only one-third of the way there when your thoughts shift from numbers to the man in the other room, the memories of his hands on your body making your heart race, you’ve always had a good time whenever he was in town. Perhaps your best friend canceling on you was a gift in disguise, guess you’ll find out if he’s in the mood for a more friendly interaction. When you deem enough time has gone by you announce you’re coming back.
“Better?” you ask taking the empty glass from the table.
“Yes. Thank you.” You stay in silence for a solid minute, neither of you making a move until he finally speaks. “May I walk you home?”
“Of course.” You eye the still dirty glasses on the counter and the one you hold in your hand, resigning yourself to come early next shift to finish the cleaning. You go out closing the place behind. The two of you walk side by side in comfortable silence as you watch the sky change colors into different shades of pinks and oranges. You are home in no time, which depending on what happens next could be terrible or extraordinary news. “Thank you,” you tell him with a smile on your face.
“It was my pleasure.” You stay there looking at each other for half a minute more until he speaks again. “Do you have any plans for today?” You can’t help but grin at his attempt of being smooth, he may have numerous strengths but that one isn’t one of them.
“Just relaxing in my cozy warm bed all by myself—” You let a couple of seconds pass, the tension between you rising, before continuing “—unless you want to join me.”
“Don’t tempt me,” he growls. You place a hand on his chest, the metal of the armor cold against your skin, and slowly lick your lips.
“Then what are you waiting for?” you lean forward until your face is an inch away from the helmet. “Are you afraid?”
“Never.” He pushes you until your back is against the door. “Are you opening the door or are we doing it here?” he whispers and your heart pounds at the question. He places his finger against your left breast and trails a path down your body until your pants, fishing a key from the pocket. “Your choice.”
You snatch the key from him and open the door. Once inside you waste no time getting to the bedroom. “C’mon off with the beskar.” You sit on the bed ready to enjoy the show. He takes his time taking the armor off piece by piece and carefully placing them on the floor, only leaving his helmet on. You appreciate the outline of his muscles against his clothes. Your gaze never leaves his body as he gets rid of each piece of clothing except for his underwear, which clearly showcases a growing bulge.
You stand up and walk to him. You trace the scars on his chest with your fingers, your lips placing a kiss on each of them. Once your hands reach his boxers, you slip your fingers between them and his skin. Going down to your knees you pull the underwear to his feet, your face ending right in front of his cock. You stay there for a moment with a smile while he keeps perfectly still wondering what your next move is. Placing a kiss on his lower belly and casually brushing your hand against him you stand up, causing a whimper to escape his lips. The way this usually stoic man responds to your touch intoxicates you.

It's your first anniversary and Din wonders if he should take his helmet off

It was still early when Din slipped out of bed and sat down to drive the Razor Crest. Of course, there was no real need for him to do that, you were in one of the safest parts of the galaxy and autopilot was more than enough. Still, he needed something to distract himself with. For the past few days, there had been something bothering him, and no matter what he did it would not go away.
Today marked the anniversary of your first year together, it hadn’t been the easiest of rides, but you had made it work. Din looked at the necklace in his hand, a couple of weeks ago he thought it would be the perfect gift, but right now it didn’t look like enough. You deserved so much more.
This past year had been the best of his life, but there was something that kept haunting him, you had never seen his smile. The one that appeared on his face every time you looked at him. You didn’t get to see how happy you made him. So, here he was, considering the one thing he had never thought about before, not when it was bothersome, not when it would have made life easier, and not even when he was in pain. He wanted to take his helmet off for you.
It was not because you ever asked him to do it, in fact, you had made it clear that you’d never want to put him in a position where he had to choose between his beliefs or you. And he appreciated that more than words could convey. The first time he had expressed his concern about the topic to you, your response was that you loved him for the person he was, not for how he might look under the beskar. And even though your tone had been loving and cheerful he couldn’t help but think there was a sad undertone to it.
It wasn’t fair for you to love a faceless man.
He kept thinking about how his heart would break if he wasn’t able to see your smile or those beautiful eyes anymore. Who was he to deprive you of that experience? He wouldn’t do it, not anymore, he loved you too much.
The Mandalorians were his family, his religion.
But you.
Oh, you.
You were his entire world, his goddess.
So he made his decision.
The moment you saw him coming down the ladder, that smile he loved so much appeared on your face. You stopped what you were doing and approached him, placing your forehead against the helmet.
“Happy anniversary my love,” you said looking up. He knew you couldn’t see his face, you were only looking at your own reflection, yet you smiled as if you were able to see him, which only reinforced his decision.
He loved you more than anything or anyone in the galaxy. You had taught him to love and to laugh, had given him the happiness he had lost long ago. Now he wanted to give you in return the most important thing he had: himself.
He reached for his helmet and at the sound of clicking you immediately took a step back, confusion written all over your face.
“What are you doing?” you asked, worry seeping into your voice. He stepped forward, closing the space between you while whispering your name. “Din?” you asked again, closing your eyes when he started taking off his helmet. “Din you don’t have to do this. I don’t want you to choose.”
“It has never been a choice; it’s always been you. It will always be you,” he replied.
“Why now?” he thought he knew the answer to this question, he wanted this to be a present for you, but he realized there was something else, he was also doing this for him.
“I want you to see me, to really see me,” he answered in a whisper that sounded like a plea. His breathing was fast, he wasn't sure he'd be able to take it if you said no.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes,” he took off his helmet and put it on the floor. Din placed his hand on your cheek, making small circles with his thumb just like he knew you liked. As you leaned into the touch, a grin appeared on his face. “Open your eyes,” he said softly, but you still seemed hesitant.
“How do we know you won’t regret this?” you asked, your eyes still close.
“Because loving you could never be a mistake,” he placed his lips on your forehead and gave you a kiss before taking a step back.

Okay! Thank you to all 826 of you who have participated in my survey I now present to you the Hermitblr Official Traumatized Teen Caregiver chart:
Tumblr media
Real Data under the cut
Tumblr media
I thought this looked dumb so i. made everyone bigger so they reached the edge of the graph and adjusted people that overlapped to get their positions to still come across but not like. overlap so bad.. So the grid on the top one is meaningless it just makes it look cool. The line is at 5.5 here, though. And the edges of the image are 1 and 10 respectively.
Here's the averages to 3 decimal places because that's what i considered when placing them all. manually. on the grid. Dead center of the face was a little dot i used to place them and then hid.
