tried not to put only vice versa related songs in this. still ended up finding a way to sneak them in because im biased ;;;;;;
follow by ロス [utsukushii kare/my beautiful man OST]. ABSOLUTE BOP OF ALL TIME i've never skipped this song ONCE since the first time i listened to it. also embarrassed to admit i always (badly) sing the ousama ka? kamisama ka?/suuhai suuhai/bakamitai da part out loud ;;;; bitter always by ロスfrom utsukushii kare: eternal is also really good.
我怎能留下你 (how can i leave you behind) by ezu [history 3: trapped OST]. THIS IS YOUR DAILY REMINDER TO WATCH HISTORY 3: TRAPPED IF YOU HAVEN'T YET (and then come talk to me about it PLEASE). this was the very first QL related song i ever put on repeat for days and it's still one of my most played songs because it's just THAT good (exactly like the show IM JUST SAYING).
ใครคลั่งรักกว่ากัน (madly in love) by jimmy jitaraphol and sea tawinan [our skyy vice versa OST]. LOVE HOW THERE ISN'T A SINGLE VICE VERSA ENJOYER WHO'S NORMAL ABOUT THIS SONG AND I MAKE NO EXCEPTION. i picked this one because i think it's the kind of song that the more you listen to it the more you find yourself humming it absentmindedly throughout the day, but honestly i could have put the entire vice versa OST here. it's another thing about this show that's absolutely incredible and it actually introduced me to a lot of songs i now listen to on the daily (ผ่านตา (everyday) and ข้างกัน (city) by three man down???? เรื่องมหัศจรรย์ (miracle) by sofa???? love by paradox???? INCREDIBLE SHOW STOPPING SPECTACULAR).
ร้อยล้านวิว (million views) by stamp [last twilight pilot trailer]. SHIVERS ALL OVER MY BODY EVERY TIME I LISTEN TO IT. and like im the first person to admit im biased as hell but this is genuinely such a beautiful song!!!! there are no words to express the amount of feelings it evokes in me, and then you read the lyrics and it's like.. emotional devastation to the highest degree but you're somehow glad for it.
หยุดหัวใจ (stop the heart) by three man down [my ride the series OST]. much like the show itself, this song feels like a warm soft blanket on a rainy day. i can't explain why, but every time im sad and listen to this song i instantly feel comforted. it's cheerful and light and it's like it's telling me that things are gonna be okay. the show is now on youtube btw and i highly recommend it!!!!

ok gamers I rewatched tristamp one more time in order to write a post about the soundtrack, and some of the stuff I found blew my socks off (even though I've seen every episode like 6 times) so buckle up because oh my god. oh my god
this will cover most of both volumes of the OST (which you can find on spotify), with a focus on wolfwood, and a little bit of vash, meryl, and the eye of michael
...and a very thorough breakdown of "drain arm" :)
Tumblr media
notes before I get into it: -I won't be analyzing the plant song because I. already wrote an entire separate thing about that haha (a link to that doc will be in the replies section of the notes if you're interested)
-you won't need to know anything about music theory, because I'm just pointing out where certain themes come up (with the exception of "duet", but I'll explain terminology there). timestamps will be included so you can listen for them as you read
-if you're obsessed with the OST like I am, most of this probably won't be anything new x) but I hope it's enjoyable regardless
-my credentials: I was a pianist for 10 years and an oboist for 7.5 years and I only had 1 semester of intermediate music theory but I got to analyze the 1st mvt of tchaik 5 and I think that permanently altered my brain chemistry
-the tracks I recommend being familiar with to have a better grasp on this post are: -> "whistling/blues harp in the wasteland" (vash's leitmotif) -> "reality" -> "childhood memories" -> "duet" -> "human subject" (eye of michael, or EoM, leitmotif) -> "drain arm" (technically optional)
-please don't take any of my interpretations/speculation as fact! you are absolutely free to come to your own conclusions I just have a lot of thoughts about the soundtrack lol 👍
here we go :]
EP1: -you can hear a variation of the plant song in "immigrant space explorer" (0:36-1:00)
-vash's leitmotif is first heard in "no man's land" (0:41-0:48)
-only about half of "mystery man" plays, and his leitmotif (0:38-0:51) is actually cut from the scene so it's not heard at all
EP2: -"escape" has vash's leitmotif from 0:18-0:31. they also took out the lyrics in the episode's version of the track x)
-it's possible that we'll hear "might is right" or a new arrangement of it if we get to see the rest of the nebraska family in future episodes, since there were posters of marilyn. I think people largely associate the song with EG the Mine but due to the track title and the fact that it first played in this episode, I feel like it's more about the nebraskas
-I'll talk about "childhood memories" in ep12 because it's related to rem's themes
EP3: -the plant song can be heard in "compatriots" (1:01-1:11)
-"reality" is first heard here, right before the episode in which wolfwood is introduced. keep this in mind for later :')
EP4: -"undertaker" has a dissonant sax part (0:48-0:54) that's similar to the one found in "irritation" (1:05-1:11), but it's an ascending passage rather than descending. it doesn't show up anywhere else so it might become a motif we'll hear in the future, but there's no way to know until the next part is released
-"planet zaji", from 0:55-1:04, has that one part from "time left" (1:02-1:09). it's heard while wolfwood's spinning the punisher around but I think it's just something that sounds cool, and you can't really hear it anyway because of the sound effects/dialogue. if zazie gets any additional themes in the future I might have more to say on this
-vash's leitmotif kicks in in "hungry !" (0:21-0:43) when wolfwood introduces himself at the end of the episode. I really like this track I hope we'll get to hear it again x)
EP5: -I don't think there's any meaning behind "shadow" borrowing from "worms network". I'm pretty sure it was just for mood (and to be fair it is a cool track)
-you can hear vash's leitmotif at the beginning of "boy and vash". this is the part where vash is escorting rollo back to the village
-"cyborg" introduces a new 4-note pattern (0:07-0:14) that I'm calling the eye of michael leitmotif. if hearing this reminds you of episode 6 then you already understand what I mean
-"dud" has vash's leitmotif as well (2:20-2:59), which starts playing when vash is begging rollo to wake up after wolfwood kills him
-only a small part of "human subject" (0:25-0:35) is used for the final scene, right when the windmills start turning. using the EoM leitmotif as a sendoff to the empty village is. really haunting
EP6 (this is a long one I'm sorry): -the EoM leitmotif can be heard in "reborn" (0:09-0:14, but it's easier to hear in 0:26-0:30). this is the opening scene where wolfwood guns down the deserter
-they do reuse "worms network" when livio first opens fire on vash but that's more for mood in my opinion. you could say it hints at zazie monitoring the sand steamer though
-we're probably going to hear "the desert rogue" again when the bad lads gang shows up in a future episode, possibly with a new arrangement for brilliant dynamites neon (this is one of my personal favorite tracks actually. it's a shame they didn't get to use the whole thing because 0:45 to the end is really cool)
-"boyhood" contains the EoM leitmotif and it's very in-your-face in this song (1:15-2:19). in the episode itself the track gets cut at around 2:10, but in the OST the piano motif from "orphanage" can be heard one more time right at the end of the song at 2:18-2:20. which is an evil thing to do. anyway
-"nicholas the punisher" is an arrangement of "reality". let that sit for a second, maybe go listen to those two tracks or something.
okay so we can look at this in a few different ways:
-> the end of episode 3 is of course a reality check, supported by the corresponding track being titled "reality" (even though it's fabricated by nai: to suggest and then prove to the people of no man's land that vash is indeed deserving of the $$6mil bounty; and to tell vash that his presence will pose a threat to humans). you know who else is supposed to be* grounded in reality? the pragmatic nicholas d wolfwood, who's introduced at the start of episode 4 *tristamp wolfwood hasn't quite found his resolve yet, as shown by his hesitation when livio appears
-> in the scene where "nicholas the punisher" is heard, vash is insistent on rescuing livio while wolfwood pushes back and says it's too late for him. he's clearly wishing he wouldn't have to eliminate livio though, and with "reality" as the foundation of this song, it presents wolfwood's inner turmoil in a new way for the audience: vash, who is physically right there trying to persuade him that there's still hope for his brother, vs his role as "nicholas the punisher" in sound, in his mind, and the "reality" that developed along with it (death is/can be a mercy, and sometimes it's necessary to sacrifice one life to save many)
(I also want to add that while legato's dialogue shows he intended for the orphanage to be eliminated through livio's death, it seems wolfwood didn't even realize that killing livio would mean more kids would be taken by the EoM for experimentation. he thought he had to choose between livio or the children, but it was a "test" of loyalty; and legato was attempting to obtain said loyalty by force)
-> outside of the episode, if you were to just listen to this track within the OST it's very representative of his character. contrary to "undertaker", which is fairly laid-back and....honestly kind of playful (and equally reflective of wolfwood's personality, when he's relaxed), "nicholas the punisher" is a more somber and contemplative piece. the fact that it's built on "reality" already suggests that he's someone whose beliefs conflict with vash's; and even without knowing that, both of wolfwood's themes contrast with the energy of "vash the stampede" quite clearly (even if I personally don't consider that track to be vash's official theme, it's still associated with him). I think it's really interesting that vash, the quieter one, has more raucous songs while wolfwood, the one with a sharp tongue, has calmer tracks :)
you might be wondering if "orphanage" is in "nicholas the punisher" and the answer is......yes, but actually, no. but kinda if you're delusional like me. this little pattern from 0:29-0:42 in "orphanage" is found in the low brass from 0:57-1:11 in "nicholas the punisher" (although it's in a different key and has a slight variation in the 2nd half). it's not quite the same, but both phrases start by going down a half step, then down a P5 interval (D->C#->F# for "orphanage", F->E->A for "nicholas the punisher"). lastly the sand steamer's leitmotif (I guess) is also present but that's. obviously because this is happening on the sand steamer lol
-"whom to kill, whom to let live" is just a faster/more tense arrangement of "orphanage" with saxophone over it. starting at 1:07 you can hear the worms leitmotif (1:31-1:34 in "worms network")
I can't say whether or not legato is already represented in the OST because he's currently not associated with any unique tracks, but they might tie the dissonant saxophone passage from "irritation" to him. it's first heard when legato stops wolfwood from escaping the facility, and as far as I can remember it's not played anywhere else. if he plays a bigger role in the next season, which I'm sure he will, I'll be keeping an ear out for this x) (I only mention the sax thing because I don't think he's represented by the sax solo that plays in "whom to kill, whom to let live")
EP7: -a little more of "the desert rogue" is heard when the bad lads make their way onto the sand steamer but it's very hard to make out over the gang yelling in the background lmao
-we're treated to the entirety of "human subject", for the scene where livio briefly returns to himself. if you somehow weren't convinced that those repeated 4 notes had anything to do with the eye of michael, this is the last instance where it's heard: the moment livio's overcome by whatever brainwashing was used on him by the EoM
-I think most people associate "time left" with ep12 but it's first played in this episode and I believe that it was primarily composed with the ion cannon sequence in mind (though a majority of the tracks in the OST only play once for specific scenes, with some songs being cut short and getting different parts played across 2+ episodes. "irritation" and "human subject" are examples of this)
EP8: -this one's a little hard to hear because the 1st note is implied in the C drone but vash's leitmotif starts at around 0:09 in "complicity" and runs all the way to 1:06
-it's also in "home" (1:38-1:57), playing at the moment luida hands vash the red coat :)
EP9: -I've talked about this before but I really like that there's 4(?) measures of polyrhythm (2 or more differing rhythmic lines that are played within the same time signature) when vash joins in, before the brothers come together on the same even rhythm. you can see how vash's quarter-note pattern doesn't line up with nai's quarter-note triplets, and in fact, neither of them ever land or start together:
Tumblr media
(for the sake of comprehension I wrote it out with a faster tempo to stretch the polyrhythm part over 8 bars instead of the slow tempo/4 bars. I'm not sure what the official tempo is. I think a sane person would write it at a faster tempo so that the part doesn't look stupidly cluttered but a good musician would be able to play it regardless. anyway-)
it sounds even more stilted because vash is playing on the offbeat. polyrhythm's such a great way to represent the brothers' relationship because it seems so chaotic but both lines are still in time together, following the same beats. they're so different but in the end they're still brothers who (are trying to) understand each other. and I love that vash is playing secondo, a more harmonic/supportive part, while knives has primo, where the melody/ornaments are. it says a lot about their personalities :')
since I don't know what the original sheet music looks like I can't say if this is true but you can hear that the plant song at 1:03 is played in octaves (2 notes that're the same pitch with one higher than the other). because of the nature of a duet, and the fact that this was played by the twins when they were little, the octaves were probably split between the parts. so vash was playing the lower octave of the plant song with his right hand, and nai played the upper octave with his left hand (we don't get to see this because it cuts to nai playing the song alone at that point). also: vash favors his right hand while nai favors his left
-now for something far less interesting: "last run" is a medley combining "ethics and morality", "compatriots", and "millions knives"
EP10: -"a cruel sight" seems to be unused. it was probably intended to lead into "bio-power reactor" in the scene where meryl and roberto meet elendira in the tank (given that it ends the same way "bio-power reactor" starts), but they cut it and just played a version of "bio-power reactor" without the melody
-elendira's themes ("elendira the crimsonnail" and "which is the monster?") seem to have some lyrics that're most audible in the beginning of the tracks but they're almost impossible to make out without some kind of editing software, which I don't have lol. they're already very quiet in the background and they echo, on top of sounding like they were put through autotune
also this is entering speculation territory but it makes me wonder if elendira's theme is going to evolve with her. we've seen some concept art with her having a more teenage appearance, so I think it'd be really cool if the vocals also changed accordingly
additionally she doesn't have the EoM leitmotif anywhere but she DOES have a proper 4-note chromatic pattern that descends from D in "which is the monster?" (1:32-1:35), which is the same note that the EoM leitmotif starts on. if we consider EoM's broken chromatic passage to represent the failed experiments, then elendira, with an actual chromatic passage in her theme, is a success
-"meryl's regrets" is ALSO an arrangement of "reality" :') this is the track that plays during roberto's final moment, which was. you know. the consequence of meryl running off in pursuit of the truth. the "reality" roberto had warned her about several times prior to episode 10. interestingly, while "nicholas the punisher" expands on the original track, "meryl's regrets" is a reduction--it's mostly just the baseline with some notes here and there. she doesn't have a theme yet, but 1:23-1:33 might be something we hear again if/when she gets a track associated with her
EP11: -"nicholas and meryl" is an arrangement of "boy and vash", with erhu echoing vash's leitmotif. I think it's a neat way to show through music that both of them are here because of vash :]
-the tracklist goes slightly out of order at this point for some reason. after "memory retrieval", "memory of geranium" is what plays in the final memory, when nai decapitates rem
EP12: -"memory of rem" is a combination of "childhood memories" and "memory of geranium". "childhood memories" is also found in "knives's piano", which is based on "duet". one fun way of interpreting this is that the "childhood memories" part of the duet is actually from rem, if she was the one who taught the twins how to play piano, which would make "duet" a musical representation of vash and nai's roots (pun intended. sorry). this also suggests nai misses rem, with how often he plays the piano, even if he thinks he hates her.
but "childhood memories" can also simply be seen as a theme that's associated with rem, nai, and vash's brief time together x)
-okay this is the part where I get to rant about "drain arm" because THIS SONG was literally the reason I decided I needed to rewatch stampede. I was listening to "drain arm" a couple weeks after the finale aired and I heard vash's leitmotif near the end and I was like "NO WAY!!!! HOW DID I MISS THAT"
as it turns out, it was cut from episode 12.
:)
not to worry though, I still have plenty to say about it. even if I'm a little disappointed. just. a little.
-> from 1:13-1:25, you can hear vash's leitmotif in the cello. this DID make it into the scene, and it plays when vash rises through the clouds
-> 2:44-3:10 is where some of the lyrics from vocal version of "millions knives" play: "remember how / we used to be / no turning back / sky's (skies??) falling down". although you can't actually hear the "remember how" in "drain arm" (at least not without blasting the song into your ears, which I don't recommend), it starts right when the image of vash and nai sitting in the geodome appears
-> we finally get the plant song at 3:36, when the condensed energy starts to leak out/charge. and then after it fires, but before nai dives into the beam, we hear "I still care for you" (3:44-3:52). and while it's originally from the vocal version of "millions knives", in the context of the scene I think it's a sentiment from both brothers: vash, who pleads for nai to let go and releases the energy away from him; and then knives, desperately reaching for the cube because he believes the success of his plan will ensure his family's (and especially his brother's) safety, the only ones he's ever cared about
in other words: plant song in cello = vash -> "I still care for you" -> continuation of plant song in low brass = knives. they're connected by this single sentence
-> knives's leitmotif (I didn't talk about it because it's only found in songs that signal his appearance, so it's really obvious, but yes he's got one of those) plays at 4:03 for the "nai is dead. you killed him" exchange
-> it goes back to a variation of the plant song at 4:29 (I LOVE the piano at 4:40-4:49 btw. it's so good. I could cry about it. probably)
if you've read my plant song analysis you might be wondering how to tell when it's being associated with the name millions knives instead of the plant race. since we know that a good chunk of the songs in the OST were written like a film score, the visual context (and/or the song titles themselves) can clue you in. "drain arm"'s use of the plant song is meant to highlight that vash and nai aren't human, so it's the latter
-> now here's the part that was removed, probably due to the runtime: vash's leitmotif in the cello again, from 5:03-5:09. if you revisit the part right before nai lets go of the cube, you'll hear that it skips these 6 seconds and goes straight to knives's theme ("but that's the plant song!" yes. we'll get to that in a sec). this missing bit right here?? fucks me up EVERY time. it's the most mournful his leitmotif has ever sounded, appropriately so, and it's absolutely criminal that it wasn't included. especially because knives's theme, the plant song melody, follows it up on violin as the cello continues to play a line in harmony.
and it's knives's theme because in this moment it's about him dying, not the plants. they spent a whole season tricking us into thinking that the plant song was knives's theme, and then they used it to send him off.
-> and then july city explodes o7
as much as I'd love to hear "drain arm" again for another chance to let the weight of vash's motif come through, I think it's too intertwined with this scene to be recycled. like. maaaaaaaybe they could use it for fifth moon if that's supposed to be the climax of the next part but they kinda?? already did the "fire a really big laser at the sky" thing? anyway yeah I'm totally normal about "drain arm". so normal
Extras: -the punisher and the double fangs have these cool sound effects when they transform and it kinda makes me think that their guns are built from lost tech, if the punisher's laser cannon wasn't evidence enough of this
-there's no equivalent of "sound life" in stampede, and I don't think there's going to be one. however, I do think that it would make a lot of sense if rem taught the boys how to play piano, because we could get something like:
-> rem asks vash about the plant song (the memory in ep12) -> she gives the boys piano lessons -> she helps them compose "duet"
-they didn't use "stampede out" for this season but I really hope we'll hear it in the next part. I know it's just a longer version of "escape" but it's a fun song :]
-this is. obvious but you can hear "gate" in "millions knives". no idea if they'll put "gate" into more songs, especially for vash now that he seems to have some control over it
-there's also something kinda fun with key signatures too: -> "millions knives" is in b minor -> vash's leitmotif is in d dorian (of course this changes depending on the key signature of whatever track it's used in) -> "undertaker" is also in d dorian -> I think songs associated with no man's land/humanity are usually in some dorian scale or specifically the key of a minor but this is solely based on jeneora rock since july city had its own unique theme so I'm not totally sure yet. "duet" is in a minor by the way -> "nicholas the punisher" is in d minor. if "undertaker" is tied to humanity (which is tied to vash) then "nicholas the punisher" is linked to the other side: knives, through the EoM. it adds another interesting layer to the contrast between wolfwood's two themes, but I don't consider this to hold any meaning lol -> I WILL say that b minor is the relative minor of D Major, so having knives and vash's songs be written in those keys was likely deliberate. and what makes it really interesting is that to get d dorian, you take a D Major scale and lower the 3rd and 7th notes by a half step
-I'm not 100% sure but I think plucked piano strings were used to create the low, scratchy string sound effect in some of the songs (one example is literally at the beginning of "irritation"). I think it's really cool that piano is everywhere in the soundtrack, but not necessarily by hitting the keys
-I am unbelievably excited for livio's/razlo's themes because they have the opportunity to do some REALLY COOL things with the music for them. we might not get them in part 2 (though I think we will) but whenever it happens I'll be so ready for it >:)
and that's all!! o(-< thank you for reading! if you actually took the time to go through all of this with the soundtrack pulled up, I'm. impressed. i think. anyway I'm a big fan of OSTs with strong storytelling and tristamp's OST is no exception :]
if you've got questions, feel free to ask ^^ I definitely didn't cover everything I just picked out whatever I thought was worth mentioning. which was uhhhh quite a bit x)
(also again if you're interested in reading the plant song analysis I did it's in the replies section of the notes 👍 I recommend reading it on a computer though)

12 Albums of 2023
The nature of my current job means that I have pretty long periods where I'm doing hands-on but mindless work. Since I'm working with samples that can't be contaminated, being able to mess with my phone to adjust my music is out of the question, and so I entered the world of Youtube playlists and full albums, giving me hours of uninterrupted jams. Because of that, I've widened my music taste quite a bit and found a ton of new albums, so I thought it would be fun to highlight some of my favorites from this year!
TECHDOG1-7: Patricia Taxxon
Tumblr media
There isn't anything I can say about this album that encapsulates the experience of listening, except to assure you that about a third of the way in I could feel new neuronal connections happening in my brain. This album puts all of her talents on display, reaching an almost divine level of vibes. Drawing on all her experiences and previous work, this feels like a beautiful medley of all the things that made her previous albums so beloved. The lush quality of Taxxon's music is all-encompassing, stimulating the senses so thoroughly that I can't recommend anything but sitting back, closing your eyes, and letting the album itself guide you.
Note: Including TECHDOG1-7 is a bit of a cop out on my part, as this is a compilation of 7 albums released in succession by Taxxon. They're all great though, so you can't do wrong picking any one of them :)
2. Music for Animal Cafes: Nobonoko
Tumblr media
Though I find Animal Cafes to be one of many absolute bangers in nobonoko's discography, there's something to be said about this album in particular. It has all the brightness and joy present in their other works, and vibes spectacularly throughout its hour runtime. The established mood is jazzy and comfortable, and serves as a great entry point into the rest of their music.
3. SEPPUKU: chocomilk-chan
Tumblr media
At almost two hours in length, SEPPUKU is easily the longest album in this list (not including the TECHDOG compilation). It uses that time effectively, effortlessly changing timbres and textures throughout its run without ever losing its core. The harsh, almost crackly drum synths provide an effective foundation for whatever new components chocomilk adds on top, from lush chords to piercing chimes. This is an album that experiments with sound while focusing on maintaining momentum, smooth enough to chug along in the background and complex enough to intrigue anyone who wants to listen more deeply.
4. arc,regn: greenhouse (Halley Labs)
Tumblr media
I don't think Halley Labs has ever produced anything but great albums, and this is no exception. Right from the beginning, you're met with lush chords and masterful use of panning, which continues throughout the entire album like a lifeline. Not only is the music rich with complexities, catchy lines, and musical talent, but there is an obvious mastery of the medium itself on display. The album creates a world all its own as it weaves through new sounds and arcs. I wouldn't bother putting this on as BG music, as the layers of sound here are more likely to draw you in like it did me!
5. Pawprint Panic!: Napcast
Tumblr media
This album absolutely jams. Calling to mind indie DS-era titles, the bouncy and bright synths are kept moving by a groovy bassline and funky drums. Jazzy melodies soar overhead on toybox-esque synths and piano, maintaining a grounded but playful quality. Expertly unified, it truly feels like an OST dredged from the 00s golden age, imbued with an infectious rhythm and bangers that make you wonder how this isn't on every VGM playlist. Listen in an open room, because this album WILL make you want to dance.
6. anemoia: kurokocchi
Tumblr media
This album is all about contrast. The piano melodies wouldn't feel out of place in a lofi jam or a music box, but thrashing beneath is a drumbreat that lends an almost manic energy to the songs. With simple, looping lines that encircle and chase the frenetic percussion, anemoia captures the essence of gleeful, uncontrolled anxiety. The bursts of sound and wild motion makes the album pass by in an instant, leaving you breathless with its memory when the final beat hits. Don't listen after a cup of coffee-- your heart might stop.
7. Mage's Cauldron for Sweet Dreams: Tottomori
Tumblr media
And now for something completely different! A reprieve from the endless list of high energy beats and breakcore that I just recommended, Mages Cauldron instead creates an overwhelming sense of calm, relishing in the stillness and silence. With sparse melodies and long stretches of quiet, Mages Cauldron soothes and placates, seeming to slow down time itself as it constructs its ambiance. Building as the album continues, you can see the forest take shape in your mind's eye through the melodies. This is an album to sit by the fire with-- let yourself be invited to the world it creates and relax.
8. Lucky Tiger: Telenights
Tumblr media
Ever listen to an album that just *vibes*? If you like that kind of music, Lucky Tiger might be your jam. With steady grooves, carefully placed pads, and a subtle yet confident mastery over sound design, Lucky Tiger creates an atmosphere like no other. The albums slides effortlessly back and forth between more ambient qualities and forward grooves, encouraging you to move along with it. Disparate elements from classical guitar to jazz sax to hiphop percussion hold hands, nothing overpowering the other as the album fuses these styles to create something all its own. Take a sip: it goes down smooth.
9. Sun Colored Eyes: Mabisyo
Tumblr media
In the same (vapor)wave as Telenights, Mabisyo delivers expertly with snazzy beats and a concrete atmosphere throughout the mixtape. This album serves as a highlight to the refinement of their production process, expertly blending samples and making great use of their sonic toolkit to elevate the experience. Each song builds on the last, adding more layers and using samples in entirely new ways that form a melodious, cohesive whole of all the disparate parts. TLDR? This thing bangs.
10. music for bugs - camiidae
Tumblr media
Light, airy, and with the cutest accompanying visuals I have ever seen, music for bugs wins my vote for most delightful album of the year. Laying the bells and piano with nature sounds gives the album a friendly and soothing ambiance, which carries the soft melodies and sparse chords. A great album for a nice walk
11. Meadow Theatre - Gumboot
Tumblr media
In the same vein as music for bugs, Meadow Theatre creates a naturalistic, quiet ambiance accented by soft, hiphop beats. Drawing from a myriad of samples and mixing them with elegance, the album creates the ideal environment for quiet contemplation, settling into looping sections at the end of each track that know just when to change things up before they overstay their welcome. It's a nice album to settle down with
12. Seasons - Kate Short
Tumblr media
Rounding out the list is the only non-instrumental album, which maintains a sweet and soft acoustic quality throughout. With poignant lyrics and a masterful understanding of space and silence, Short creates an album that glides along with poise. With lush instrumentals and a clear voice, this album becomes nothing short of transcendental

6, 11 and 26 for the ask game
omg yay, i love these! thanks <3
6. three songs you wish you could erase from history (because they’re terrible)
Cheerleader - OMI (If this song has million haters i am one of them . if this song has ten haters i am one of them. if this song has only one hater, that is me . if this song has no haters, that means i am no more on the earth . if the world is for this song, i am against the world.)
Shape of You - Ed Sheeran (one way ticket to the hague i'm not joking)
You Need to Calm Down - Taylor Swift (the definition of a hate crime. death penalty)
11. three favourite songs from movie or TV series soundtrack
this is SO difficult to narrow down because probably 35% of my music taste is based on movie/TV soundtracks lmao
Movin' on Up - Primal Scream (granted i think i had heard this one before but hearing it again in the end credits of one of the eps of season 1 of The Great possibly triggered a manic episode that kept me high on dopamine for the entire last summer)
Temptation - New Order (i owe any coolness points i have to listening to the trainspotting OST at 16 [oprah voice] she is the mother I never had, she is the sister everybody would want she is the friend that everybody deserves. i don’t know a better person)
Bashir with the Good Beard - Lady Parts (i would be remiss if i didn't include the brilliant original songs from We Are Lady Parts & this punk rendition is catchy & hilarious. check out their cover of 9 to 5 too)
26. three favourite non-English songs
also incredibly difficult to choose omg
Godinama - Dino Merlin & Ivana Banfić (i have been ride or die for this song since i was three)
Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Tango) - Shakira (me at age five: [trinity the tuck voice] i don't know what the fuck she's saying but girl i am living!)
Svirete ja Zajdi, Zajdi - Olgica Hristoska (the most beautiful macedonian song in my opinion. do urself a favor and listen to it even if u don't understand the language, the vocals are smth else)

Favorite Final Fantasy Music (FFXIV - Endwalker)
This was a hard list. This might be the hardest list out of all of them, actually. This is the (currently) most recent expansion of FFXIV, meaning it's the last part of my XIV favorite song lists. I love the Endwalker OST. I think overall, it has the highest number of tracks I absolutely love. The base game, the raids, the side content, it's all so strong, and I firmly believe there is not a single bad track in the entire list, only songs that I don't personally vibe with, and even then it's like, not even that much lmao.
The hardest part of this list was thinking what I didn't feel right including; a part of me as I'm writing this is thinking "fuck it dude top 20 let's do it", but I'm gonna hold strong and say: I love Pandaemonium. I love the remixes, I love the medleys and covers. I want to make this list a little varied! So I'm trying not to go too ham. (also there's no official youtube uploads of these yet so let's hope square doesn't kill these links!)
5. Finality This right here? This spot was the reason this list was so hard. The next 4 songs were locks, but I was like "what song hit me enough that it lands right above honorable mentions?" And after several listenings of every song you see on this page, this was the guy that did it. This is the final dungeon boss theme for this expansion, and that intro? Sold me. I know whenever I hear this song, I am getting ready for a fight for the literal end of the world. This song SOUNDS like the apocalypse. I love the heavy hits, especially the use of bass drum (like the opening bass drum roll??? fuck dude). I love how sorrowful the orchestra sounds, yet still loud to give you that sense of intensity. Not to mention, the choir version of Footfalls? My god man, this is a banger, but less in the sense that you're dancing along to it, and more to the sense that it gets you pumped the fuck up every time you hear it.
4. With Hearts Aligned I couldn't not put something from the final trial. It's an amazing fight. But I felt bad choosing The Final Day, cause, while glorious, it is ultimately a medley of songs from past expansions (which to be fair, is why it fucks).
This, is Endwalker specific. And not only is this Endwalker specific, this is generally considered to not be The Endsinger's final boss theme, but your final boss theme. Your friends all praying for you, the guitar shredding like the intro cutscene, the strings rising the song further, and to top it all off in the intro? The Maker's Ruin. The Theme From Phase 1 Of The Ultima Weapon. You're hyped at this point. You're powerful, you're undefeatable, your friends are giving the coolest fucking power of friendship speech you've ever fucking heard, and then the vocals come in. Everyone's favorite part of Footfalls finally shows its head of "yeah, this is the main song this is from." Singing about our song of hope, which, as far as I'm concerned? Is you. On wings of hope, you rise up through the night, higher (oh higher!), carrying our song, cradled fast within your arms, that it's chorus might ring for all (side note: this is also all the achievement names for the msq). This song is hype incarnate. This song is you conquering over despair, and bringing light to the entire universe. This. Is. Your. Song.
3. Flow Together Before any of the patch content came out, this was my favorite song. If this didn't exist, The Ewer Brimmeth would be right here, but this is my absolute favorite version of this melody. This is the fight against Venat (Hydaelyn), but also the final credits song. It's honestly beautiful. The vocals give it that elegance perfect for the person who's Basically your mom, but the band gives it a roughness befitting a sparring match between two Azems. My absolute favorite part starts after the song gets a little heavier, beginning at "Deep dark, far away~". The lyrics here are so meaningful, the guitar is beautiful, and the melody itself brings me to tears; it goes into this wonderful electric/acoustic type solo, and then doubles down. It takes all the same strengths as the part before it, and increases it (I know there's an official music term for this but I can't think of it and I'm too busy tearing up to google it!!!). Listening to the lyrics itself, which applies to normal Flow (same song with no band), it means so much for the meeting between you and Hydaelyn, or Venat in this case. She's talking to you. She's asking you what your journey's been like. She's telling you she's watched and listened to you all this time, and saying how you can rest. And I'm sure this meaning can be turned into anything, but that's what I get out of it, and it's what hits me the hardest (I am literally choking up writing this; the chokehold this goddamned song has on me I swear to god).
2. White Stone Black We're exiting the emotional Styrm-won't-stop-crying corner, and entering the realm of hell and demons, the castle of bangers. Pandaemonium has my favorite soundtrack out of any one section in the entire game. Literally every song in this raid fucks (even Scream and I don't even really care for that song!), and if I didn't have self restraint this whole list would have been Top 5 Pandaemonium Songs.
Anyways, to this one specifically: not enough people get to experience this wonder, because it is locked behind savage content, being Phase 2 of the final boss in the second set of fights. The phase begins with a horrific transformation, and the song itself is this intense droning synth on top of these heavy guitars, adding onto the creepiness and intensity, the main Shadows Withal melody previously used in Embers and generally associated with Lahabrea (cause it was his facility) turning into this terrifying chanting chorus (Silence.... holding us to violence. Violence... swearing us to silence.); Then the bop starts. The percussion ramps up, there's this really cool trancy noise in the background (that low key reminds me of super monkey ball), and the song gets heavier and more chaotic with all of the instruments and layers happening at once. The main meat of the lyrics also start at this point, with that heavily filtered screaming creating another layer of intensity and terror. This whole song represents this fight perfectly with the horror vibe and chaotic instrumentation (did you know a synonym for chaos is pandaemonium (did you know this bit also works for FFI and II)). There's also the peak of the song, when the less demonic voices take up the lyrics, and this is really where the dance floor energy creates itself (if you look up the Fortnite dance Infectious, I am always doing that in my mind to this song). it's an earworm, it's a head banger, it's creepy and terrifying, it's an absolutely beautiful mess of a song and I am so glad it's getting a Primals cover.
1. Hic Svnt Leones What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets! But enough talk, have at you!
I'll start this by talking about the main Pandaemonium motif. I was originally disappointed it wasn't the classic tune used in II and IX, but it has really grown on me, especially because this raid series is its own entity. XIV doesn't always have to be a theme park (although I do love when it is don't get me wrong). It's normally creepy, ghostly, and very befitting of the horror gothic death castle that is this raid. Love the arrangement, and the notes hit JUST right. You enter the raid, you do the first 3 fights, and you're expecting this really heavy classical (is it baroque? is that the genre?) vibe for the entire raid series cause that's the vibe it gives off!
Then you get to surf rock Dracula. And you remember "Oh yeah I'm playing Final Fantasy XIV!". Hic Svnt Leones is my absolute favorite version of the Pandaemonium motif (but believe me, Ancient Shackles and Athena are CLOSE FUCKING SECONDS), and my favorite song in Endwalker period. Taking that amazing melody, with the amazing combination of guitar and organ creating this classical/modern fusion that exemplifies what makes XIV's soundtrack so unique and awesome. The lyrics with the filter and again, the melody, are addicting, and extremely fun to sing alongside to. And then you realize what you're singing along to? It's talking about death, violence, murder, demonic creatures and rats and rot and blood and all sorts of horrific topics, about how you're gonna lose your mind and break your soul and your bones are gonna burn AND IT ALL SETS THE ATMOSPHERE FUCKING PERFECTLY! YOU'RE FIGHTING ANCIENT TERRORS DRACULA IN THE DEMON CREATION CASTLE OF COURSE IT'S GONNA BE SINGING DEATH AT YOU! The lyrics go so raw: "Here in the valley your death casts no shadow"? God Fucking Damn. The "ooooo ooo" in the chorus is super strange, but I also love it? Continuing that really weird surf rock vibe this song has for some reason?? But then also going right into the haunts of the damned with the really deep choir, and then the raspy, rotten, creepy voice whispering about how it's gonna open you up and reveal the black inside and it's just. Fuck man. This song fucks. The melody is amazing, the atmosphere is perfectly horrifying, the lyrics go hard, and I could honestly listen to this song, not to mention this entire raid, for hours.
Honorable mentions go to the entire soundtrack, but more specifically: Footfalls, The Ewer Brimmeth, The Labyrinth, Divine Words, Vibrant Voices, On Blade's Edge, Home Beyond the Horizon, Garlemald Express, As The Sky Burns, Sky Unsundered, Miracle Works, Your Answer, Close in the Distance, The Final Day, Carrots of Happiness, Where Daemons Abide, Ancient Shackles, One Among Wonders, Radiance, In The Balance, Hippo Ridin', Embers, Rhythm of the Realm, Dedicated to Moonlight, Dreamwalker, One Amongst The Weary, Fleeting Moment; Athena, The Tireless One; Myths of the Realm, and finally, all of the remixes and covers: The Day Will Come, Tower of Zot, Welcome to Our Town!, Troian Beauty, Battle 2, Battle With The Four Fiends, Forged in Crimson, Voidcast Savior, Ultima's Perfection, Crimson Rise, The Final Battle (FFIV), and The Red Wings.
i really did try to keep that list reasonable but jesus fuck the music team was on some shit this expansion

MAPLE.
Tumblr media
35. A character who should’ve got more character development?
like. sooooo many of them lol. can i say the entire cast of v3? because honest to god that's my answer -- even my faves in v3 leave Something to be desired
beyond that, i actually think that thh and gbd do a really good job of stretching characters to their maximum narrative utility before killing them off, and i do feel like in both games the most narratively flexible ones are the ones who live. i think if i had to say anyone from those games it'd probably be leon or sayaka just because the way the free time events work in trigger happy havoc work mean they get like three events and then they die and you never get to know more lmfaoo (but even then i still don't think their characters are Lacking in the way that the v3 cast is for me. sorry for being a v3 hater lol)
39. Smartest murder plan?
komaeda's, obviously LMFAO. god every time i replay sdr2 chapter 5 im struck by it all over again. like they literally had to guess!! even with nanami revealing herself! even then! they still had to be like well. hope his luck actually worked out! king popped off and the entire trial is SO good for advancing the plot and tying off hinata's dynamics with BOTH komaeda and nanami! the moment of sickening clarity when hinata realizes that he DOES understand how komaeda's brain works, and knows what his intentions really were? nanami and hinata's final goodbye? uuuugh sdr2 chapter 5 i love youuuuu.
rest under the cut bc Long.
47. A headcanon you have about a character?
*pushes two million unfinished drafts of Togami Headcanons to the side* i am going to talk about komaru. i think she's a butch lesbian and every time she's depicted as feminine in fanart my soul dies a little even though butch komaru exists solely in my head. i also think she's really sporty, but i've talked about that elsewhere hehe.
ok i'll talk about togami a little bit. it's 100% projection but i think he's agender. not in a way where he like. actively thinks about it -- even at Full Self-Actualization i'm not sure if i ever see him actually realizing it and actively thinking about himself in that way -- but i just dont think he as any particular connection to being a *man* outside of how it plays into his attraction to other men/his family's expectations of producing heirs. like he just kind of is how he is and doesn't feel compelled to make any particular effort to present as masculine. i could make a joke here about his gender just being Togami, but genuinely i do think that rings true. he's not a boy or a girl but a secret third thing (byakuya togami™️) does this make sense. like. to anyone (<- projecting and insane) whatever. i think he would look nice in a floor length skirt.
48. Favourite OST?
i... usually play the games on silent :X legit i know like 3 songs including mr monokumas lesson. just tried to remember what beautiful days sounded like and the wii sports theme is what my brain supplied (<- embarrassed)
i WILL say that i think drv3 has the best opening track of any of the games. its so jazzy and fun hehe
51. Character you thought you were gonna dislike but loved in the end?
mmm. hard to say, honestly? it's been so many years since i formed first impressions of the thh and gbd casts that i kind of dont even remember what i first thought of them? i have a lot of v3 characters who i thought i would like and wound up feeling kind of ehh about, but that's not the question lol
i think, Big Terrible Writing Choice aside, i was really surprised by how much i wound up actually *liking* korekiyo? like okay OBVIOUSLY they took his character in a terrible direction but before that when he's just like, a weird little freak? that ruled lol
in terms of characters that i've had full turnarounds in opinion over the course of 2012-2022? i remember not particularly liking/caring about kirigiri, sayaka, fukawa, souda, or gundam when i first read the playthroughs of their games, and now they're some of my favorites hehe. but that's less about me going *into* the games thinking i wouldnt like them -- because in both cases i went in completely blind -- and more about them growing on me like a fungus over successive playthroughs lol
56. Best free time events?
ok. take this with a grain of salt because i'm stalled out in my sdr2 replay rn so i haven't redone the free time events for that game in awhile/haven't done any v3 ftes besides maki's and ouma's because im a hater.
i think kirigiri has really good fte's. i love that she gets a little sillay in them and how subtle her progression from "why are you talking to me" to "i care deeply about you" is. i also really appreciate how the game cutting her off as an option for free time at certain points serves to make that progression feel really natural with the game's actual plot. love you miss kirigiri.
mondo's are really great as well, he's such a fun guy to interact with and him talking about wanting to be a carpenter and loving his stupid tiny dog and being too nervous to ask girls out all add such levity to his character and make it SO sad when he dies. like damn that biker gang leader trapped in a murder game really is just like. some guy in high school :-( i also loved that they brought him wanting to be a carpenter back in dr:s! made my heart soar uuuuugh i love you mondo, sorry i never ever talk about you
komaeda gets an honorable mention for his botched love confession. buddy you did So Bad.
83. Least favourite chapter?
[staring myself down in the mirror] i will not hate on v3 this time i will not hate on v3 this time i will not hate on--
chapter 4 of v3 was soooo boring guys. i hated the virtual world and idk if it was just me but the controls for it were just. nightmarish. whatever lets talk about the games i do like.
i also agree with @ovidiomedes about thh's c3 kind of dragging. it's one of my favorite trials, but the actual chapter is. really slow lol. i think part of that is due to the anticipation of chapters 4-6 which are some of my all time favorites across all three games, but i think it has larger narrative problems that contribute to that dragging feeling ://

Kurosawa (Cherry Magic) - he saw Adachi
Eun Soo (Faith)- Kudos to Eun Soo for navigating her Goreyo era time travel experience with greed and history knowledge to survive. And also cause she bagged one of the most decorated general in that era.
Bai Qian (Ten Miles of Peach Blossom) - while I do take issue with Susu, Bai Qian kicked everyone and their mother's ass. So she definitely deserves this

For the SMT ask game, #14.
14. Best soundtrack
how could you Fucking do this to me. this is the most impossible task because almost every smt ost bangs and fucks and rips and i go to bat for 99% of them
but uhhh. i can divvy this up by era i think. and none of this is going to be coherent in any way but i think you should take my word as gospel because i'm right
The Early Years (1988-2000):
Majin Tensei II: SPIRAL NEMESIS
this shit SLAPS. the music in majten2 is, uh, quite frankly incredible on the SNES, and the composers (hidehito aoki, misaki okabe, yoshiyuki ito) were on some next-level shit when they scripted out bangers such as A.D. 1995 Story and Smash Up and remakes of two of the previous game's songs (which already were AWESOME) Flame Up Fragment and Bicarbonate of Face and and and,
idk play majin tensei. i'm about to become a majin tensei blogger and stan. did you know that almost all of the majin tensei manga is translated, and all that's left is the rest of vol 4 and all of vol 5? (grabbing your face) DID YOU KNOW!@!!!!
Shin Megami Tensei II
i mean. okay. you knew i was gonna bring this up. who do you fucking think i am. the whole game is wonderfully done and atmospheric, and even with the odd dumbass-theme playing in the BG i just, i dunno, i think it still gives me chills. loading up the game and watching the text scroll to the Title Demo is a lot, listening to that banging Battle theme is intense in a way that no other smt game has reached since IMO, and the Makai map theme is just... really sorrowful! these are the PSX songs because i prefer them over the muddied instruments they used for the original SNES game, but the original isn't bad either!
Megami Tensei II
i think everyone should bare minimum play Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei (2) at least once in their lives, but replace the ost with the original NES version because ohhh my gooooood holy shit there is SUCH a world of difference between the synths used vs the really muddied KMT instrumentation. that aside, the music is just... Good. the battle theme, Death Match, is incredibly intense, TOKIO Adventurer is a fun song to walk to on the overworld map (even being interrupted by demons every 2 steps), OMEGA is a REALLY good final boss theme... it's a bummer they don't get referenced more often! the last time they were was in Majin Tensei, and then again as a total throwaway in SMT5...
The 2000s (2000-2009):
Digital Devil Saga 2
both games go on this list imo, but i uh, i personally really like 2's ost more than 1's. i have no reason for this i just think it's nice. the battle theme Battle for Survival especially, but i just like the whole thing in general? sorry i have nothing else to say here
uhhh. i don't. have. anything else to put here. the other games in this category are good but their osts don't stand out to me... except for Strange Journey, which i. never finished. oougrhghhgfdnjdfjgdgh explodes IT'S SO GOOD THOUGH SO I?? HEARTILY RECOMMEND IT ANYWAY
The Recent Age (2010-Now):
Shin Megami Tensei V
don't talk to me about 5, but if you DO talk to me about 5, talk to me about its ost. of anything in that game, the music and sound direction REALLY stuck with me, it's probably the best the series has ever had to offer
i REALLY like Strength, and yes that is entirely because it feels like OMEGA of megami tensei 2 fame; but the regular battle theme Da'at is great too, and i spent an uncomfortably long time listening to fan recreations of it from the trailers because it was that fucking good to me. honestly the fact that there's so many different battle themes and they all slap is great, they're all fun to listen to. especially Destruction, like fuck dude did they really have to go that hard? (yes)
Soul Hackers 2
gnawing and chewing on 2's ost. i don't care how many people didn't like it, i did, and i think it's really well-done. very very atmospheric! Karakucho is wonderful, COMP SMITH is the GOAT (and i'm glad so many people agree with me!), and even the idiot theme, Cats and ladle, is... very cute! i never thought it out-of-place whenever the team started goofing off, since the idiot theme was never too jarring
... also, Battle of Devil Summoner is bumpin, i'm glad we got to hear this song so many times over the normal battle theme, because. hot damn
i'm not picking a favorite out of any of these are you kidding. except maybe majin tensei 2 that one is undoubtedly a beast. but like. i think everyone should play all of these games and experience their music and have your taste in music irrevocably changed against your will

Do you have a favourite case from the series in terms of best music?
Thank you for posting all the dgs soundtracks, I'm enjoying listening to them for the first time in a while :)
Hello! 🎸
Been thinking this one over ever since I got the ask. That's a tough question!!
I've really been divided between TGAA2-5 or oddly enough AA5-5? (TGAA SPOILERS) TGAA's wins overall because of the remixes they have done to previously existing songs (thinking more specifically the lobby/courtroom ones funnily enough). I love when games do the whole "It's for all the marbles, now". It has enough changes to the core music that doesn't over power it or change it into an entirely different track, but it still gives the songs an "oomph" factor they absolutely needed.
Yujin's reminiscence song was gorgeous (those violins paired with the xylophone are BEAUTIFUL, was always happy whenever they used that track for background reminiscing, glad they brought it back for the last case) + Words of Parting and Our Separate Paths making me feel like I'm in a Ghibli movie, The Game is Afoot is a great theme, perhaps one of the best songs of the whole TGAA (And I mean, come on, who can beat tap dancing) + Drums. Drums. Graah. Don't even remember if this one plays during case 5 or not. Just drums. Great Objection, great Prosecutor theme, Van Zieks involved in the case which means bangers, just a really, REALLY solid line up of songs in one package.
As for my runner up pick... The Dual Destinies mention is weird, I know. Putting what I feel about the story itself aside, since that's not what the question is about, I think that its OST has some of the weakest and strongest tracks of the whole main AA line. The highs are very high, but boy are the lows very low. However! I feel like we get to hear a lot of heavy hitters in their final case, or at least their positioning in the case is good, it elevates the scene that they're playing on.
All of the songs that I really really like end up being the ones that build up their final 30 seconds in a grandiose manner- Within the time frame where The Dark Age of Law is played, it's great at setting the mood, where in, example, case 3, it ends up feeling short sighted, overblown. PHANTOM is GREAT for what it's setting up to do, genuinely such a good example of telling a character's story through a track (I so wish they kept that electric guitar going for longer, it was so nice to hear a rare instrument in between the ost). It's not even that incredible of a song by itself, I would NOT listen to it on it's own for fun often- It's just that it does what it's there to do VERY well.
Case also has an Amazing pursuit variation, a treat to hear all of the objection themes of the characters (Genuinely think Athena has one of the best themes in the entire series, pronto) I think the mood matrix is awesome, and shout out Core 2013 even though you aren't part of 5-5. I'm a fan.
Shout out to 4-3, 5-2, AAI2-4 as well

101 Pinball World (Teyon, 2012)
who greenlit this and can i go back in time to get them to un-greenlight it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the game 101 Pinball World is a dsiware title that attempts to be 4 themed pinball cabinets from the comfort of your nintendo dsi. it fails at this. the word "game" is doing some serious heavy lifting also
it boasts 4 worlds with a total of 101 tables when combined, but every "world" is really just the same set of board with different coats of paint. your ball can get stuck in places it cant get out of without tilting (which entirely disables your flippers until the ball is offscreen) and its happened to me multiple times a game before. it has 3 save files if you want to subject your friends to it and promptly lose said friends over it. someone made a trailer for it and noted how you can get a slow ball, tilt the board, or even have Ball Immunity, the number one funniest thing about this title
the sound design is both lacking and overwhelming at the same time. but the worst part is the... music? do i call it music? does it count as music? does any of this matter? does it ever end? do we get some sort of retribution for the horrendous auditory crimes of 101 Pinball World? i can answer none of these questions. as if you can even hear the music over the atrociously-mixed sounds of flippers and bumpers and points screaming from the ds speakers
here is the "soundtrack"/torment, uploaded in a video by a definitely unremarkable person who definitely didnt make a game everyone was talking about in like 2018. no siree. never happened
youtube
mystmans commentary on the game is pretty on-point, speaking as someone who decided this game was a good thing to spend my precious dsi shop money on a decade ago. i still get the title theme stuck in my head from time to time, though, since thats like the 2nd best song in the game. theres only 5 songs in this entire 5-dollar game, by the way. and also it was 5 entire dollars
which means theres no reason to rank them individually /ref
5. wizard theme - hilariously garbage. "ah shit, someone killed the keyboard player." worst thing i think ive ever heard from the ds. its even worse in person believe me. this is not music
4. space theme - kinda bland? idk. its like one synth loop forever. could be worse though, wizard theme proves that real well. has a weird buzzing in the back that really makes my brain hurt. i like the little ascending-descending sounds! very fun i forgot about those
3. pirate theme - good song, but ABSOLUTELY not pirate music. this sounds more like a beta track from club penguin: elite penguin force. i bet if you changed the soundfont itd fit the penguin bill just fine
2. title theme - catchy but empty. its like how modern deco*27 songs feel to me: good melody and beat, hollow instrumental. used to be 7-year-old-mes jam though. BEAUTIFUL bassline. goddamn. just gimme this for the whole ost honestly. itd only get a little grating.
1. spooky theme - regularly gets stuck in my head, albeit a better version i thought of so im not tormenting myself forever. this is what a song should sound like. it feels like this was made first and then the devs started running out of time to get the game out. keyboard drones in the back kinda give me a headache. but tbf that happens with all of the music and this is just the one that does it the least
overall, this game isnt even worth it for the bit. do not play this. i have found few games that are worse. maybe ill talk about them eventually. one day 101 Minigolf World will have its day. not yet though. 101 Pinball World was a soulless shovelware cash grab and it wasnt even fun. what a waste of 5 bucks. shame on you tiny tadpole past gio
overall rating: 2.7 - Real Bad. has 2 good music tracks and the menu ui looks nice. boring, broken, and somewhat painful under the surface -- like broken glass hidden under a shitty old paper-thin rug. cost too much money on the dsi shop channel for what it is. Do Not Play.

4, 5,32, and 55 for the writers ask game? You can pick one if that's too many hahaha
4. What is the plot bunny you’ve been carrying for the longest? Optional bonus question: Do you ever wonder why you haven’t written it yet and experience deep existential dread?
Oh my GOD it’s the first timkon mermaid au!! The one where just Tim is a mermaid. I have more that are older but that’s the only one that’s been on my mind a lot LOL. I have been carrying this idea for like four months now I think, which is crazy to think about. I luckily haven’t had the Existential Dread over this one; I know why I haven’t written it, it’s because I keep coming up with other ideas that I also want to write!
5. Have you ever made a playlist about something you were writing as an elaborate means to procrastinate when you could have been actually writing and if yes drop a link, son
Surprisingly, I haven’t! I’ve wanted to for a while, though. I don’t know too many songs and I don’t use Spotify so I don’t discover new ones that easily. I think I’d overthink whether or not songs fit too much to actually make a proper playlist. I think I might try to make one to nail down the vibes of some of my more tricky wips, at some point!
I do listen to the Stardew Valley OST while I’m writing sometimes, for the vibes, so a link to the hour long versions I use is here.
32. Do characters influence your writing style?
Yes!! It’s one of my favorite parts of writing!!! I mold my writing style around how I think my POV character would think, feel, or react to/about different things! Word choices in speech and thought, interpretations of other characters speech and actions, and whether or not certain things are noticed/pointed out in a scene all depend heavily on the character I’m writing as. One character might focus on the appearance of a room, another might focus on the sounds from across the hall. One character might pay attention to someone’s body language, while another might care more about the semantics of their word choice! And etc.!! My characters influencing my writing style is one of my favorite things about my writing, period.
55. Do you have any abandoned WIPs? What made you abandon them?
Technically, I don’t count any of my WIPs as abandoned. I consider them just on a back burner somewhere, waiting. Some of them are probably pretty close to abandoned, though. I’d have to rework them almost entirely to be happy with them. Most of these “abandoned” WIPs are because of characterization. I have a lot of ideas that I came up with before I fully understood a lot of the characters involved, and I just wouldn’t be happy with how they’d come out without some major changes. I want to do my best to make my characterization as good as possible! I want people to read my stories and go “He would say that!”
These were really fun to answer!! I love talking about my writing stuff <33
If anyone wants to ask anything, plspls do!!

My last nerve...
The chatter about no one supporting Jimin’s OST is false. The song is breaking records left and right, SOMEONE is supporting it.
I saw a ton of promotion and positivity happening on Twitter by Army. If you saw a lot of negativity, then you are following the wrong accounts. Can’t help you there. That’s on you.
Tumblr media
The song was not a BigHit product therefore not their responsibility to promote. The entertainment company that produces the television show promoted it. Maybe not like all you suddenly expert public relations and marketing people on social media think it should have been, but they promoted it. The song is not the property of Jimin or Sungwoon. YamYam Entertainment were the executive producers. That means they hired PDogg, Jimin and Sungwoon for the song. Their main interest is promoting their television series. The song was part of that.
Tumblr media
Be mad at Spotify but also be realistic. That app is not very organized. Never has been, so no surprise they were not timely in updating Jimin’s profile, not to mention the confusion to begin with because there are multiple artist accounts called “Jimin”. Was it done on purpose in order to diminish the song’s success? I highly doubt that, this is a billion dollar organization, why would they spend energy on trying to sabatoge one artist’s song? For what reason? Regardless, I don’t care for Spotify, it certainly isn’t the be-all, end-all of streaming services, but I suppose I only feel that way because I use Apple Music.
I understand the importance of song ranking and artist following numbers. The song is doing well, Jimin is doing well. But I understand fans want him to be #1 and his song to smash all records that can’t ever be broken again. I get it!
Tumblr media
However, the story that came to light regarding the unpaid insurance incident definitely was timed to mar the songs release. I tend to ignore sources that are non-official when it comes to serious news.
But K-media sure is something else…this is how it’s gonna be huh? This is just me talking but if this group of 7 humans is generating over $5 BILLION USD to Korea’s gross domestic product I would think y’all would report better about them but that’s just me.
Unfortunately, Twitter played right into it and engaged wholeheartedly. They will never learn that in order to diffuse those sorts of things, you should ignore. They just added fuel to the fire they wanted to put out. And this is why this story is appearing on entertainment news outlets like Billboard News. Y’all made it a big deal. It’s a shame.
And anons here saying words that are not fully informed are just helping a topic stay alive even though it appears to have been resolved as well as perpetuating false information:
1. It’s been resolved (months ago). I already said that.
2. BigHit is aware of the situation, have taken responsibility and I am 100% certain people got fired and others got hired, security protocols have been re-evaluated, so there’s really nothing more to add to the discourse. Talking about just keeps it at the top of everyone’s mind.
3. If it’s a security or legal issue it sure as hell is none of our business. Stay out of it.
4. Whoever was the “whistleblower” did so in order to mar Jimin’s OST release. It all played out exactly as they planned because people thrive on drama and negativity.
And ya know another thing about that? Drama Llamas sometimes don’t even realize they are being a drama llama. They think the entire world is just like them. Because the box they live in is very tiny with high high walls that they can’t see over.
Tumblr media
Learn to keep your mouth shut. I know it’s a challenge for some of you but really you should try harder to be a good human. People chattering about matters that SHOULD BE PRIVATE with all the gatekeeping and screaming about respecting their privacy...STOP TALKING OUT BOTH SIDES OF YOUR FUCKIN MOUTH.
Don’t get me wrong. I understand the outrage. We all love Jimin and want to protect him. We worry about him when we hear this kind of bullshit going on. But to trash his company, his friends, the other BTS members and even Jimin and Sungwoon because you don’t think they’ve done enough to promote the song or protect Jimin in general is wrong. Evil people will succeed in being evil as long as they can figure out a way. THAT’S WHY IT’S IMPORTANT FOR US TO BE GOOD HUMANS!
Tumblr media
Just me posting this is whole rant is wrong but you guys plucked my last nerve on it.
Keep being mad and outraged if you want to but you aren’t helping Jimin or anyone else by doing that. You are just making yourself wallow in negativity and bringing down everyone else.
We have a lot of good fun things to look forward to.  Let’s just move on already.

Hey have you ever watched We Best Love?
have i watched we best love???? me????? oh anon you have well and truly opened a can of worms.
we best love was the second BL i ever watched and the first one i fell HARD for. and when i say fell hard, i mean i used to rewatch the entire show, both seasons, weekly for a solid month. i was obsessed. and still to this day it has to be in my top 5 BLs ever.
and the thing is… i kinda feel like it’s a perfect precursor to bad buddy in so many ways???? especially the first season. bc yes they’re both enemies to lovers (even tho pat and pran technically were never enemies), but what i mostly mean is that, like bad buddy, we best love to me is a simple plot done excellently and that’s what i love. don’t get me wrong, i love my fair share or wackiness and drama and we defo get drama in s2, but s1 is just this simple love story, of 2 boys getting to know each other, of one trying to peruse a long held crush despite years of holding back, despite years of telling himself it won’t happen, despite years of saying friendship would suffice, and of the other having this revelation, that maybe what he’s wanted has always been there right in front of him and he just didn’t see it before. thinking about it, it really is very bad buddy-ish in that way too.
and then s2 hits you like a 10 ton truck. bc the separation????? omg it really broke me. and it’s so over the top it could’ve come off cheesy or way too dramatic but somehow it didn’t???? somehow i believe all of it, i believe that, even after getting together, shide still had this insecurity that it was too good to be true, that he wasn’t good enough, and when given the opportunity to be apart, he took it thinking shuyi would move on and find someone better. and shuyi, god shuyi, he opens up his heart once and it truly gets trampled on, broken apart. he comes from this empty home where things are handed to him and decisions are made for him and he has all these expectations on his shoulders, and for once he does something for himself and it falls apart. so i so so see why shuyi would break, and i just remember so vividly what he said to shide after he argued with his father and told him to leave, how he talked about how all he wanted was for shide to stick by his side, to not take on his father by himself but do it together, to listen to him and let him decide what to do, what’s important. in that moment, shuyi feels like shide doesn’t trust him to fight or to choose him over his father, when he would’ve done that in a heartbeat and god ughhhhh the conflict is perfect in my opinion.
just thinking about this show already has me teary. there’s so many lines and scenes that stab at my heart and get to me like nothing else. both leads are phenomenal actors and have incredible chemistry. and the ost is full of emo bops, I think at least 2 of the songs are in my top 5 most listened to songs of the year. so yeah… there you have it anon. i don’t know if you expected such an innocent question to spark all this ranting and believe me i could go on way way way more but I won’t for your sake. just know this show is v v special to me and I adore it.

well, since it’s 5 in the morning I think now’s the perfect time to ramble about my thoughts re: OMORI vs Yume Nikki game design, Black Space, and how trying to copy something successful kind of sets you up for missing the mark
these are thoughts I’ve been stewing in since january, I don’t want people to forget that I have a lot of opinions about OMORI as a game
(firstly, I’m sorry if this is all over the place or not worded well. it is 5AM)
I’ll preface this by saying that these are merely my opinions. I’m specifically going to be focusing on one aspect of game design here, so if you’re curious about any of my other OMORI game design opinions they’re scattered around my blog and are not hard to find tbh
okay so my thoughts about this are mostly Black Space exclusive, and considering that’s one of the climaxes of the game this might be a bit of a spicy subject to talk about KJFGHKFJG but I am passionate about good game design okay. especially in psychological horror RPG games. (also throwing out there jic that I don’t think OMORI is a bad psychological horror. pls reference this post)
(also want to say that I genuinely like Black Space. okay? okay)
so this was something that I was talking about with a couple of friends back when I first finished OMORI around the beginning of january. actually, at this point I hadn’t even played Yume Nikki yet, but when I did finally play it recently my thoughts on this were 100% solidified
essentially, our thoughts on this can be boiled down to how Black Space was trying too hard to be Yume Nikki, but didn’t grasp exactly what made Yume Nikki so impactful in the first place
obviously taking inspiration from something you like and wanting to rework it into your own creation is normal, good, and even encouraged! however, the most crucial thing with that is the “reworking” part.  when being inspired by something, the goal is to take what you loved, and didn’t love, and mold it into something entirely new. it shouldn’t be “well I like this thing, and this thing did it like this so I’ll try to do it like that too” because it’s just not going to work. (this is actually an all around issue I have with OMORI, not just Black Space, but more on that later)
so to me, a good 50% of Black Space came of feeling kind of... eh...? it was like... you have 50% that feels so well thought out and meaningful, and then 50% that’s there just to. be there. and be like Yume Nikki, I guess. even before I played Yume Nikki, I couldn’t even remember some of the rooms in Black Space existed until I replayed it again, which is a shame because Black Space is the type of area where everything should leave an impact
now I want to talk about the game design itself-
Yume Nikki is a game about experiences, and atmosphere. there’s limitless area to explore, so much so that it feels endless. there are so few things to interact with that sometimes it feels like you’re doing nothing at all. all you have is aimlessly wandering these huge areas, taking in the sights, and listening to vague sounds and music in the background that are often just a few seconds of audio played on loop. (this is one of my favorite OST in the game. having this be all you hear for 30 minutes as you walk around in a looping forest really does things to your head)
it uses all of these elements to make you feel lost, confused, and very alone. you’re just trapped in a dream, where even with all the space in the world to explore, the lack of anything to do makes it feel suffocating. even the small area you have in the waking world is designed in such a way that feels cramped and destitute-
Tumblr media
Yume Nikki is a perfect example of “less is more” and “show, don’t tell.”
then take OMORI, which doesn’t really know how to balance those things with it’s tendency to try and shove too much in. for instance, think about the over abundance if NPCs with irrelevant fluff dialogue. it was all too much and so dull it got to a point I stopped reading most of them altogether
(and something important to note I think, is that the general feeling of Yume Nikki is the same throughout the entire game. the tone never really changes, and neither do the expectations. OMORI, however, tends to just drop things on you out of nowhere. and that’s not necessarily a bad thing! it works for a lot of different sections of the game, I’ll say.
however, Black Space was different. it’s kind of like, it just drops you in there and expects you to understand the way it works, despite the fact that all of the other horror segments lead you to have a completely different set of expectations for what you should be doing/feeling. it’s like shifting you into another game entirely, and it’s almost immersion breaking. up until this point, OMORI was not the same type of “show don’t tell” type of game, so suddenly jumping to attempt to do that can make it lose some of it’s impact)
like I mentioned before, Black Space is designed in a way that’s meant to mimic Yume Nikki. and I think we need to ask ourselves “just because we can do this, does it mean that we should?” again, taking inspiration isn’t a bad thing, but it’s the execution that matters
and here’s where my biggest issue actually lies, I suppose. it’s the fact that OMORI has multiple instances of trying to take inspiration from other things, and failing because it’s trying too hard to copy, not rework. it’s just most obvious because of Black Space, I think. because, like I said before, a good half of Black Space is just trying to be Yume Nikki without giving it any OMORI original flavor, and the fact that it’s trying to be something else is immersive breaking as hell to me
for example, take the red mazes. I don’t think the idea to incorporate it into OMORI was bad, but. you can plainly see when you compare the two maps that nothing was really reworked, made more interesting, or even given a OMORI flavored twist-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Yume Nikki-1 ; OMORI-2)
another instance is less about the game design itself, but surprising/not-surprisingly, it actually has to do with OST
this is something my friend was telling me, because I myself have not read Umineko, but there are OST in OMORI blatantly trying to mimic songs from that VN, even down to their names
the biggest offender imo is GOLDENVENGEANCE which is a decent song, I won’t say it isn’t, but compare it to it’s Umineko inspiration, Golden Slaughterer
it’s just another unfortunate instance of “this thing I like is good, so I’ll try to copy it!” with no clear grasp on why it’s successful and it’s disappointing. that’s really the only word I have for it at this point, disappointing
and the reason it’s most disappointing is because of things in OMORI that are obvious inspiration, but were reworked so well
let’s take this other Umineko OST, Worldend Dominator. this is a brilliant song, and it’s really fun to listen to. and, it very clearly inspired beloved World's End Valentine
World’s End Valentine slaps. it’s great. it takes aspects of Worldend Dominator and shifts them around to be a unique and fun piece of music that also fits into OMORI perfectly.
something important to note about this, is that World’s End Valentine and GOLDENVENGEANCE were written by two different composers. what this makes clear to me is that there were people on the OMORI dev team that were better at reworking ideas than others. because, despite a lot of the criticisms I was talking about, there are things in OMORI that are obvious references that I love and think are great!
like this one, the most pointed out nod to Yume Nikki-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think it’s great. it’s taking a very memorable bit of imagery from Yume Nikki, and giving it a reference while also giving it it’s own deeper meaning beyond just the aesthetics of it. it’s just good, I love it
and yeah, not all of Black Space feels like one giant copy of Yume Nikki. there are plenty of doors that I think take the same aimless, empty, and unsettling feelings and use them in a new way that feels more grounded in OMORI. my personal favorite door is the “Sunny... I love you.” room.
actually, funnily enough, the area in OMORI that felt the most like Yume Nikki to me wasn’t in Black Space at all. it was actually the snowy area right before Snowglobe Mountain. something about the vast empty space, simple yet atmospheric OST, and little things to find scattered around just gave me a nice Yume Nikki vibe, but mixed with the OMORI style (hell, the OST there and the one for the snowy area in Yume Nikki even have a pleasantly similar vibe, and not in the “oh this is a copy” way [X] [X])
gosh, I feel like if I keep talking I might end up going in circles more than I already have
hopefully my words made sense!! I’d love if anything I said resonated with anyone aha. I just hope that I’m not coming across as hating on something because I’m biased towards something else or something... almost all of the critiques I have about OMORI come from a place of genuine interest
thank you if you read all of this!

My Ranking of Purple Kiss's memeM Album
I don't talk about Purple Kiss a lot on this blog but I love them a lot and they're one of my fave ggs and I was looking forward to this comeback a lot!
Tumblr media
6. Oh my Gosh
It's cute and the vocals are nice, but I'm not particularly attached to the song.
5. memeM
I'm conflicted about this song cause there's a lot of parts of it I really enjoy and parts I don't. I LOVE the entire pre-chorus and the raps parts are so cool, especially Yuki, she has such a special style, and the "I'm in your head" parts are very enjoyable to listen to. I'm not a fan of the intro or the actual mememem chorus part. I just don't really get it. And while Swan's Billie Eilish moment is cool, it didn't really fit the song to me. The song is fine, if not, just a little disjointed.
4. Hate me, Hurt me, Love me
This felt like a song on an early 2010s coming of age romcom and I mean that in the best way possible. The instrumental aspect of the song has all the best aspects of a soft pop song and the vocals go hard and the chorus is catchy. What more can I ask for?
3. Pretty Psycho
The one and only thing that's preventing me from ranking this song higher is that I have no idea what a freaky purky or purky freaky is and it just throws me off. Aside from that, it's such a cool song with such strong badass vibes. I wish this was the title track! I feel like it perfectly captured Purple Kiss's sound – which is something I know they're still experimenting with, but if I had to explain it to someone, I'd show them this song. If Zombie and Ponzona had a child, it would be Pretty Psycho. Yeah the more I talk about it the more upset I get. More praise for Pretty Psycho please.
2. JOAH
This song just feels so calming. Coffee shop vibes, you feel? It's super reminiscent of a certain OPM song and it's frustrating me that I can't think of it, but I just adore how sweet and soulful the vocals are on this track.
1. Cursor
I'm so in love with this song – It sounds like a whole Kdrama OST! Even before listening with lyrics, I could feel the emotion in the production and their voices. I heard some of them wrote it too, which I love. The song feels like a eulogy to youth; I have a soft spot for songs that deal with feelings of sadness/being lost in youth. And again, the fact that they wrote this makes it even more authentic. I'll be listening to this song a lot, for sure. Not only is it my favorite song on the album, but it might be my favorite, or at least one of my favorite b-sides of theirs in general.
Overall, I enjoyed this album, but most of the love goes to my top 3 rated songs. I do really like though that they're trying to be experimental while remaining loyal to their original concept. Once they've established a strong sense of self as a group, I have no doubt that they'll take the world by storm! Super pleased overall.

I don't know how often it happens that an anime change studios. (I think AOT did change animation studios) but sort of wishing that MHA will get a new studio once the story gets closer to saving the villians. I mean I know the anime will follow the manga but I dont trust studio bones anymore especially if the ending song written for Shigaraki and Deku, but they gave it to H & E. We always have the manga though. I hope I didn't bother you writing this since I don't want to upset you.
Well it’s always possible but I doubt it’ll happen
I used to really like Bones Studio because they made FMAB. Top tier anime. So idk why they’re screwing this one up so much other than marketing.
Again—I’m sticking to my guns and saying that they’re doing it for this ridiculous movie coming out. Idk that they’re all related but it’s just funny how the manga sucks rn because it’s focusing so much on E and Hawks, the anime sucks because it’s rearranging its arcs and jipping MVA in order to make sense for a MOVIE that’s heavily E and Hawks focused. It’s so stupid how everything all at once is just SUCKING because of these two characters. AND THEN THE ENDING?? Like WHY make this ending about E and Hawks? Like this would have made much more sense for it to be during season 7/8 when the villain hunt arc is getting animated. NOT NOW??? Ugh. Like it’s not even going to make any sense because that ending sequence isn’t going to fit in season 5 content at all and I just?? I’m failing to understand their reasoning here.
That’s what makes me feel so bitter toward Hawks. He himself would be fine if the entire franchise and story wasn’t bending over backwards for his character. It’s fucking ridiculous dude.
I do think the manga will get better so I’m not worried and I do think MVA will be great. Again—that OST slapped. It’ll be fine. I think it’s all gonna turn out great and I’m very excited for it all. But right now it’s just cringey and ridiculous.
