Mini Fanfic #1207: Trained to (Try and) Impress (King of Fighters X Art of Fighting)

3:21 p.m. Southtown's Fitness Gym..........

Yuri: (Sat Herself Down on a Bench While Panting) Okay!......That's......enough sparring.....for one day.....

Marco: (Takes Out a White Towel From his Bag and Wraps ir Around the Back of His Neck Before Using It to Wipe Off the Sweat Falling Down on his Cheeks) You sure you wanna call it quits? You seemed a lot more fired up than ever before, especially in the last few rounds we had.

Yuri: ('Sighs Heavily') Yeah, I'm sure......That was like....what? Best 6 out of 7 so far? (Looks Up at the Ceiling) A girl can handle so much before she throws in the towel........(Takes Her Bottle of Water Right Next to Her and Drinks Out of It Before She Sees Marco Handing Over her Pink Towel) Thanks. (Uses her Towel to Wipe all the Sweat Off her Forehead and Face)

Marco: (Sits Down Next to Yuri) You know, I'm impressed with the amount of progress we've made so far today, more so yours in particular.

Yuri: (Turns to Marco) You think so? I feel like I need more work in my more newer techniques if anything.

Marco: There's always room for improvement to be sure. (Smiles Softly at Yuri) But I think you did pretty good out there so far if you ask me.

Yuri: (Smiles Back at her Friend) Thanks, Marco. (Places her Hands onto Both her Cheeks While Pouting a Bit) It's about time someone recognized my efforts in this dumb Karate Team......

Marco: I take it you had another squabble with that "dumb" brother of yours recently?

Yuri: (Sighs While Rolling her Eyes) Nah. I had more of a one-sided arguement with my dumb dad involving that said dumb brother of mines if anything. After me and Ryo spent all mornong helping him out with getting the restaurant ready for today, he kept going on and on about how proud of him he is of him restoring the Kyoukgen Arts' name to it's original glory and that I should either be more like those two or quit learning how to fight all together.

Marco: (Eyes Widened in Genuine Surprise) Wait, he seriously told you that?

Yuri: Yeah. I mean, it's not the first time he ever told me to call it quits, but it's doesn't make it any less annoying and frustrating considering I had to constantly prove myself just how strong and capable of a fighter I really am to those two on every ring I stepped into. And even all of THAT still doesn't convinced them otherwise!

Marco: Maybe they wanted to keep you safe. You are the youngest the Sakazaki family after all.

Yuri: I am, yeah. But I've also participated in the KOF tournament with Mai and King since day number one! We never won a single entry since then, but neither did their team! And the only reason I started taking up karate in the first place was so I could protect myself from getting kidnapped again.

Macro: (Eyes Widened Again) You were kidnapped once!? By who!?

Yuri: This chrome dome of a crimelord named Mr. Big. Him and Geese used to work together years ago. (Places her Finger onto her Chin) Or did he worked Geese?.....('Sigh') Doesn't matter. The bottom line is that he was slimey creep and I hate him! He even blackmailed our dad into leaving us alone in our home when we were younger to go work for them as Mr Karate until Ryo managed beat the snot out of him years later! Which.....(Brings her Ponytail In Front of Her Before Combong it Down with her Hands While Frowning) that in it of itself is another can of worms I don't really feel like opening up right now.......

Marco: (Nodded in Understanding) And you have every right to not do so if you wish. (Frowns a Bit) I'm sorry you had to go through all of that.

Yuri: (Smiles a Bit) Thanks. I'm not over the whole thing completely, but I'm still getting hmthere at least. (Starts Rubbing The Back of her Head Back and Forth in a More Shyly Manner) Really, if anyone should be sorry here is me for bumming you out with my problems and trauma.....

Marco: (Simply Shrugs) You needed it to get it all out if your chest, there's nothing inherently wrong with that. In fact, I think I can relate to that problem of yours.

Yuri: Really? You have siblings of your own this whole time, Marco?

Marco: Nope. But you see, when I was a lot young, let's say around: 8 or 9, my father, bless his soul, used to be famous martial artist back in my hometown. He has a good amount star students older than me who were practically sons to him. Me, being the naive, bratty kid that I was, got jealous of all the attention he was giving to them overtime, so I signed up for their classes shortly after.

Marco shows Yuri a picture of younger, kid self, standing in the middle of a group photo with the other more older students of his father's dojo, on his phone.

Yuri: ('GASPS') Oh my gosh!~ (Happily Points at Kid Marco on Screen) Is that really you over there?

Macro: (Sighs While Rolling his Eyes) Yeah, yeah, I was a cute kid back then.

Yuri: More than that!~ (Starts Up Sizing the Pucture and Starts Twisting Onto Little Marco's Cheeks on Screen) You were the most adorable, squishly looking little guy ever, yes you were~

Marco: (Groans While Facepalming Himself) I swear to heaven and earth, you're starting to become as bad as my mother right now. Always going around bragging about how cute and handsome I was to every old and new faces she meets.....

Yuri: (Giggles Softly) Well, she's not wrong, you know? You're still quite the looker these days. Which reminds me~

Marco: Oh no.

Yuri: How come you still don't got yourself girl and/or boyfriend yet?

Marco: (Groans Again) Again with this?

Yuri: (Starts Pouting Again) Yes, again with this! You're sweet, handsome like your momma says you are, and very hardworking, to the extreme sometimes. The fact that no one has thrown their arms around you yet is a travesty in it of itself!

Marco: Look, we can PLEASE go back to the Topic at hand? I'm trying to help you out here!

Yuri: ('Sighs in Defeat') Fiiiiiine. But we're setting you up for a date the next time we go out clubbing with Robert one of these nights! (Crosses her Arms) No ifs, ands, or buts about it, mister.

Marco: (Rolls his Eyes Again) I'm filled to the brim with excitement already. (Shows Off Pictures of his Upbringings as a Fighter With Each Swipe From his Finger Tip) And so was kid me when I was first enrolled to the class. It was an challenging experience and my drive to prove my worth towards my father and everyone else would end up getting me in trouble in a few areas.

Marco's phone then shows a picture him in his preteens, smiling at the camera with his late father while carrying a medium size trophy.

Marco: But it was only until I won my very first Junior's Martial Arts Champion League that I stopped worrying about what others think of me and start focusing more on myself, the improvements, and accomplishments I've made so far, that I'll continue to make going forward. Hell, that win even got me more invested in the excitement and rich history of this magnificent sport!- (Quickly Stops Himself From Geeking Out Before Clearing his Throat) But I digress.

Yuri: (Snickers a Bit) Nerd~

Marco: Hush up. ('Sigh') Look, the point I'm trying to make here is that I've seen the way you fought your opponents in the past through present. And now thanks to the sparring matches we had today, I, for one think, you're already doing a great enough job holding your own out there, putting your only unique spin to Kyoukgen Style the best you could. Like that time you created a electrified Haoh Shokou Ken. That was the most ingenious take on the move yet!

Yuri: (Giggles Softly While Blushing a Bit) Awww~ You really think so? I was only able to perform it cause my gloves were generating static from my old gi I was wearing at the time. But I figured it was doing more harm to my body the more I keep charging my ki up like that, so I just ended up no doing it anymore, you know?

Marco: (Simply Nodded) Make sense. The human body is fragile. But my point still stands. (Place his Hand Onto Yuri's Shoulder) You're a great fighter, Yuri, and I know that you have what it takes continue to strive in becoming more stronger than you ever were beforehand, not for the approval from your father, your brother, not even from Robert abd myself, but for yourself.

Yuri: (Stares at Marco For a Brief Second Before Nodding in Agreement Before a Determined Smile Starts Creeping Up on her Face) Yeah.....You're right. So what if my style of fighting isn't as traditional or completely by the books as everyone else in our Dojo? It worked out for me a lot in the past and I'll be damned if I sit here and it lot all go to waste now- (Gets Up From her Seat and Points Fowards) For my name isn't Yuri Sa-FREAKING-Kazaki! (Felt a Btt of Cramp in the Vack of her Knee) Ow.

Marco: (Let's Out a Light Chuckle) Atta girl. Keep doing your thing. I'll root for ya all the way.

Yuri: (Winces a Bit While Sitting Back Down and Smiling Back at her Fellow Kyoukgen Karate Fighter) Thanks, Marco. I'll root for you getting a date one days~

Marco: (Gives Yuri Deadpinned Look Again) You're not gonna get off my back with that, are you?

Yuri: (Places her Arm Around Marco's Shoulder) Not as your now appointed Wingwoman I'm not!~

Marco: Pretty sure that isn't a thing.

Yuri: Oh it is. I've been in the love-matching game for some time and now while my previous attempts with King and Ryo has long been a complete bust, I'm more than certain that my guidance this time around will help you reach to greater heights in the romance game.

Marco: What about Robert's guidance?

Yuri: (Shrugs) Pretty sure his would more in line how good you should look if anything. Either way, we got your back 100%, big guy. Trust us!~

Marco: I will once you stop giving me the puppy dog eyes.

Yuri: Carry me back home and I will~ (Rapidly Blinks her Eyes at Marco with a Cutesy Looking Smile on her Face)

Letting go, both demons left for the palace as I went to my room. Shedding my clothes, I bypassed pyjamas and laid in bed. Tears ran down my face as I thought about Y/N and all the precious memories we had made together. I rolled over and realized they left their Little D No.1 plushie here from their last sleepover. Clutching it, their scent strong on the plushie, I drifted off to sleep, hugging the Little D in my arms wishing it was Y/N instead.

CHAPTER 6 - Celestial Realm (1207 words)

I awoke to the sun shining brightly through the floor to ceiling windows overlooking a garden. The bed felt softer than a cloud. Basking in the softness of the bed, it took a hot second before I realized that this is not my bed and there is a SUN! Bolting upright I looked around a bedroom that was not my own. The entire wall on my right was covered in floor to ceiling windows. At the foot of the bed was a small bookshelf with some plants on top. Just beyond that seemed to be a walk in closet. A small bathroom was located next to the closet. Other than a small study desk near the bed, the room was simple and plainly decorated. The walls were painted off-white with light neutral pastel green trims and accents. A knock at the door had me jumping out of my skin.

“Y/N, are you awake?” Finally, something I recognize!

“Yes, come in Simeon.”

“Good morning Y/N. Did I wake you?” “No, I woke up a short while ago. Where am I, Simeon?” Simeon walked over and sat in a chair by the desk. A soft smile on his face as he answered.

“You’re in the Celestial realm-”

“Yes, I know that, I mean where in the realm am I? And who’s room is this?”

“This is a guest room in the House of Honors where Luke and I live. We found you passed out in the garden with your wings covering you.”

“We?”

“Michael and I. He and the rest of the Archangels live upstairs on the top floor.” Simeon opened his mouth to continue when we heard 3 strong knocks on the door. Michael then came in. He had a fair complexion. Reddish orange hair was braided down his right shoulder. He sported a get up similar to Simeons but he had a full gray half sleeve with a cape instead of Simeon's sleeveless leotard and over the shoulder cape. His shirt bore golden accents and his cape was golden on the inside without any tassels.

“Good morning Simeon, Y/N.”

“Good morning Michael. How did it go?”

“Father isn't exactly pleased to have Y/N up here, sporting a fashion similar to Samael’s no less. He requested an audience with them as soon as they woke and had eaten.”

“Very well, I’ll escort them there after they eat.”

“Father had specifically asked me to escort them to the palace. Simeon, you should attend to your other duties.”

“Of course.” Simeon turned to me, giving me a hug.

“It was nice seeing you again Y/N.”

“Likewise, say hi to Luke for me”

“I will.” With that Simeon let go and walked out of the room.

Michael now looked at me, looking less than pleased to be dealing with me.

“Follow me.” He then walked out and I scrambled out of bed catching up with his long strides. We soon entered what looked like a dining area. There seemed to be some leftovers from breakfast.

“Have a seat and help yourself. Once you finish, we will go see Father, he will decide what to do with you.” Michael didn’t bother waiting for my reply before heading off in the direction of what looked to be a kitchen. Following his direction, I grabbed a plate and put some familiar looking foods that I remembered Luke teaching me about. As I was eating, I mentally prepared myself for the inevitable face off I would have with God. It was not going to be pretty.

In the Devildom. After they lost Y/N

When they first lost Y/N, Satan kept to himself. He locked himself up in his room and submerged himself in his books. When he couldn’t take it anymore, he found himself in his circle taking it out on the humans down there serving their punishment. His wrath consuming him. One day Lucifer found him curled in on himself trying to reel in his wrath after unleashing it on some of the 4th circles' inhabitants. Satan didn’t sense anything approaching until he felt a firm but comforting hand on his shoulder. Looking up he found Lucifer looking down on him with a sad smile and a look of something between pity and sympathy in his eyes. Lucifer looked down at his brother, no, his son. He took one look at the state he found Satan in and did something he didn’t think he’d ever do again, he hugged him. Satan felt his older brother's, no, his father's arms wrap around him. At first, all he felt was shock. He and Lucifer haven’t hugged since he was a child, now though Satan found himself leaning into his father's touch. Ignoring everything around them, Satan let out all his grief and sadness, holding onto his father like if he didn’t he’d disappear as well.

Present

Classes were going slow for Satan. While he would normally be engrossed in the lectures, diligently taking notes, he keeps finding himself drifting between thoughts, not staying on one topic for long and always finding a way back to thinking about Y/N. About halfway through his curses and hexes lecture, he gave up on paying attention and let his mind wander and his hands write whatever they wanted. At the end of the lecture, Satan looked at his notebook taking in what he had written. Mind you, he didn’t pay attention and just let his hand wander. What he found on the page both amazed and saddened him. Today’s lectures had been about the art of seduction with the use of curses instead of a demon's natural charm or beauty. He ended up writing out diligent notes from his lecture, but instead of them being in his usual note taking style, he found them in the form of a story Y/N had once had an idea about writing. He wrote about his time tutoring Y/N for their exams and how they successfully seduced him but instead of acting like a kitten, they took a spell Satan taught them and altered it so that not only would they have seduced Satan, but he still regained his free will, with Y/N pulling the strings, unknowing to him. He read the short story his mind had came up with, his mind revisiting memories of different lessons with Y/N, their progress, their ups, their downs, the one time they cursed Mammon into a frog, the look on their face when they successfully executed a complex spell without Satan’s magical assistance. He found himself longing for those days, an unfamiliar yet comforting emotion filling his heart. As he walked through the halls towards his next class, he made a vow to himself to try and feel that unfamiliar emotion until he could name it, then keep feeling it, because, for Satan, it felt like Y/N was right next to them, with their signature smile on their face, proud of him for focusing on a feeling opposite of his wrath. Should he start to feel his wrath taking over, he would picture Y/N, holding his hand, encouraging him to feel that unfamiliar emotion. One he soon learned was called ‘Philia Love’.

It takes 3 minutes to get Harry to the hospital, 4 hours of surgery to patch him up, and another 5 hours for him to come to. And frankly, feels longer than the 6 years they spent apart.

Every second feels like getting pushed closer and closer to the cliff’s edge, and Bel feels like the living room is closing in on her. She’d put down her phone so she can look up apartments in Butt Fuck, Nowhere in peace like an absolute moron. The next thing she knows, her phone lights up with 41 new messages-- ‘Harry Holland’ and ‘shot’ and ‘Highgate Hospital’ barely pass by in a blur.

For a brief night, her house finally felt like home. She could picture slow nights and dancing in the kitchen and coffees in bed. But now it feels like some random safe house in some random city that she’d been assigned to.

She has to get out.

The hospital canteen is depressing and her scalp is sweating under her hat, but the harsh white interior keeps her grounded and alert. And as her tea goes stale, she hacks into the hospital system and just stares and stares at her screen until she gets an update.

Holland, Harry: surgery completed.

Transferred to Suite 1207.

Conscious.

Bel channels all the nervous energy into careful precision, from the way she gets up from her seat to the way she slips out of her baggy sweats and snapbacks into a sleek well-fitted suit, marching up to the 12th floor with unwavering conviction.

She spells out her name with every rap of her knuckle against the door, and a burly guard answers the door.

“Let her in,” he commands from the inside. He sounds… exhausted, and her heart breaks a little.

The man stares her down, but makes way for her. She barely registers the Ruger peeking out from his hip. Her attention is entirely taken by the man giving the order from the hospital bed. It’s only been a few hours since she saw him leave --bubbly and bounding about in her kitchen, kissing her goodbye like it’s an ordinary day for an ordinary couple.

And now he’s lying limp and pale and drifting in and out of consciousness.

“Give us a moment, will you?” Harry tells the guard and he nods, ducks out wordlessly. “Bel.”

She wastes no time to rush over, taking the seat by his bed and his hand in hers. “I suppose our escape plan will have to wait until your recovery, eh?” she smiles wryly.

“More or less.”

There’s a weight to his words, and Bel wants oh so badly to ignore it. God, she just wants to stroke his hair and comfort him, but her stupid self can’t help but ask, “So is it more or less?”

He locks his fingers between hers, only his thumb moving freely against her skin. "I have to do this one last time. They're not gonna stop until we finish them."

"Who are they, anyway?"

"The Five Families in New York --and no. Don't--" he knows what she’s about to say even before she thinks it, and it terrifies him to death to let her in on his little shit show.

"You know I can help you, right?" she tries to argue, calm and even, although the tightness in her voice betrays her.

"I can't risk it. Nobody knows you're with me, and I want it to stay that way. I can't have that-- I won't."

"Kid, I can look after myself--"

"Bel,” he cuts her off. Final. Resolute. “Please. I’m asking you to trust me. I’m gonna finish this, once and for all, and then I’ll come back to you. I just… I need you to hang tight for me.”

She wonders if it’s this hard on him when she gave him the five-year warning long ago. The uncertainty, the powerlessness, the crippling fear of losing one another.

But she knows that. And she knows there’s nothing else to do but wait. She’s not a hero or a martyr. This isn’t the kind of story where she could swoop in and save the day; the last thing she wants is to put Harry in harm’s way. So she simply says, "Okay. Just... finish it quick, yeah?"

"Wait for me?"

"Any day, kid," she assured him with a kiss to the top of his head.

She does wait. Patiently and painfully, as weeks turn into months and months turn into a year. Before she knows it, a year becomes two.

For Harry, each day he spends without her drags on-- and he spends every single day that way since then. He knows he’s being watched, and he knows better than to put Bel in the picture. This time, he’s the one going in and out of radar fighting the bad guys. How the tables have turned.

He does keep tabs on her, though. She retired from MI6 after his company’s case is closed, on the grounds that “desk jobs give her a permanent migraine.” Her colleagues laughed at that, she told him. And he loves hearing her laugh-- dulcet and warm. Quiet. Comforting over the crackling white noise of his burner phone.

“Are you there?” she breaks the silence.

“I’m here, yeah.” he takes a deep, heavy breath. “Got everything settled?”

He could hear her smile. “Pretty much. You’re gonna love it.”

“Just a few more hours now…” his words hang in the air, and he tries to pick the mood back up. “Until you tell me where the hell we’re going.”

Or until I find out whether or not you make it out alive, she pushes the thought of her head. “Any minute now, kid.”

His tear sneaks up on him as much as that little word does. Her 'any day' is now 'any minute.' The hours are running out, and as much as they're looking forward to it, the final moment terrifies them still.

Because when it comes down to it, he only ever has one minute. A soldier's minute, where everything happens at once. There's no revenge, no secret lover back home before. No sweet escape and happy ending after.

There's only himself, the infamous mob leader John Gotti and a gun in his hand. Even his brothers seem to fade away into the background in his mind. The hustle and bustle of the New York nightlife below them sound so far away.

There's only Harry, his gun, and the man who ordered his execution and kept him from his lover.

"It's over. You think we've been hiding from you all this time?" Harry seethes, charging forward until the barrel of his gun presses on Gotti's clammy forehead. "Think again, you old fuck."

"Well, these little boys just handed your ass over to Frank Cali, which you're at a losing war with. So you either die with Cali or with us. Take your pick." Harry cocks his gun and he can feel Gotti's insides churn.

Gotti, a stocky Italian-American man in his late 60's, is unraveling under the pressure. But of course, he wouldn't show that so easily. There's still that one last show of bravado. "You little boys are nothing but playing pretend," he scoffs condescendingly.

"Fuck you," the old man all but spits at him.

Harry blinks. "Fair enough," and pulls the trigger.

And then his ears go ringing and his face smattered with blood.

Eventually he notices Harrison and Tuwaine's expression of shock, and Tom… disapproving but not surprised. He simply orders the body to be taken away and the Cali clan to be contacted. Clean and clinical.

Harry insists on driving all the way to the airport. He needs something to focus on. The red ghost of blood on his hand is still stark against his pale skin and the comings and goings of the street lights distract him from that. And on the jet to Hamburg, he checks the contract for Frank Cali over and over, until Harrison gives him some Xanax and tells him to call it a day.

At least he's able to get some sleep then.

He calls Bel as soon as he lands, and she picks up even before the first ring ends.

"Kid?" she answers-- her voice small and worried and hopeful at the same time.

"It's done," he simply says. "I'll see you in an hour?"

She lets out a sigh of relief. "Yeah. Okay."

"I'll... be seeing you."

Bel braces herself to say it back without bursting into tears. This will be the last time they utter it in longing. After this, no more.

An hour couldn't come fast enough, and she ends up just driving aimlessly, stopping for coffee and gas, and even then she arrives at the hangar early. She couldn't wait to stop all this waiting, past lives be damned. The TARDIS blue door she left behind in London didn’t even cross her mind; her home was never a house.

Her home is a feeling.

A person.

Bel parks on the edge of the private hangar just as the boys disembark from the jet. Tuwaine and Harrison walk right towards their black SUV. Harry stands on the threshold while Tom gives him a firm hug before making his way down the steps. It's a very brief, very intimate moment and she almost feels like intruding for witnessing that.

But Tom clocks her-- or rather, her car- and knocks on her window with a knowing look.

"So I was right," he says in lieu of a greeting, "It was Harry."

"And I was right," she counters, "You were in love."

He catches Bel's eye on the wedding band adorning his ring finger and smiles, almost to himself.

"You know what? If you weren't a shady criminal mastermind, I think I would've liked you, Tom."

He’s quick to retort, "And if you hadn't fucked my company over and ruined my kid brother there, we would've gotten on."

They share a laugh, light and easy, and they can almost recall how friendly they used to be. Not intimately close, but enough common ground for a budding friendship there.

But the laughter dies down and Tom turns serious. Bel swears he could see the wary in his eyes. "Hey, uh… take care of him, will you?"

She doesn’t need to answer; he knows she will. But it still doesn’t make up for the ache in the pit of his guts. He is losing a brother, after all.

“Hey,” she snaps him out of his reverie. “You can always come down to visit-- just make sure you don’t bring any trouble with you, yeah?”

And as Tom walks away with a smile and drives off into the foggy dawn, Harry walks over-- his suit replaced with jeans and black hoodie, a duffel bag slung on his shoulder. He opens the passenger door and slides in, pulling her into his arms.

She holds him so tight for as long as he holds her. In her smothering, he finds comfort. Her lavender shampoo and her warm clothes and just her familiar scent soothes the copper and smoke in his nose. Her arms around him feel like an extension of his body. A protective armor, of sorts, padding him from the sharp air he’s been submerged in.

Harry feels her soft lips on his cheek, and his mouth seeks the very same touch. Her kiss seems to unlock the ache he’d been putting away: the stinging in his throat, the sobs threatening to rip out… He tears his lips away as the tears come streaming down.

“Are you okay?” Bel runs her fingers through her hair.

“Yeah, I’m just…” he sniffles, wiping his eye with his sleeve. “I’m just glad it’s over.”

“Me, too,” he cups her face.

The invisible red returns and Harry finds his right hand trembling again. He pulls away and tries to cover it with his left, but all he thinks about is staining his palm and smearing the blood on Bel's face. She catches sight of that, and he meets her concerned gaze.

"Thought I'd grown out of it," he muses, like he's disappointed in himself. "Guess not."

Far be it from Bel to judge. She knows that pulling the trigger doesn’t feel as easy as it looks. Instead, she places a comforting hand over his clasped fist. "It never got easier for me either. Every time I needed to do that, I-- I wouldn't sleep for days."

"I'm just so... tired," he leans back against the headrest. "Can we go home now?"

He sounds like a child, and yet he looks like the last two years aged him ten times over. It breaks her into bits. So she sits up and starts the car with a fond smile,

“Of course.”

Bel is thankful for a lot of things in that moment; she’s thankful that Harry made it in one piece, that they made it through the end-- ten agonizing years since they first met. That he landed in Hamburg, so the drive isn’t too long…

She spends nearly the entire journey going on about the places she considered for the two of them. She adores New York, but following Harry’s altercation with the Five Families, that city is not an option anymore. He wanted a little cabin in the middle of nowhere-- and she would love that, if she weren’t so inherently extroverted.

They needed somewhere peaceful enough, but not so quiet that it would drive her stir-crazy. Someplace they could live a normal life-- to work and study and go on dates without anyone batting an eye…

Harry looks back and forth between the winding morning roads and the girl next to her, and he couldn’t quite believe that everything she said wasn’t some distant daydream anymore. Their home, their new life. They’re on their way there and they will arrive soon.

Any minute now.

“Welcome to Holland, Harry Holland,” Bel announces as they enter the city of Gröningen.

The birthmark on the corner of his lips is pulled into a half smile. “It’s Frost, actually.”

“Hm?”

“I’m legally Harry Frost now.” he motions at his brand-new passport in his pocket. “It was my mother’s name.”

“I like it,” she decides. “Harry and Bel Frost. Has a nice ring to it.”

He hums in agreement. It does have a nice ring to it, but pauses a moment when he realizes what that entails. “Are you proposing?”

“I’m… entertaining the idea,” she shrugs all nonchalant, although he doesn’t miss the nervous shift in her posture.

“Bel, we’ve waited ten years to be together. Do you seriously think a marriage proposal would be a dealbreaker?”

“I don’t know. Maybe you don’t wanna be tied down by this nutcase.”

“Please. I would love to be tied up and down by you. Any day.”

“Easy there, tiger. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” she chuckles, although his last words echo in her mind. She just had to make sure. “Any day?”

“Any day,” he reassures her, his hand squeezing hers on the gear stick, and he imagines what they would look like with wedding bands on their ring fingers. He wonders if he should get her an engagement ring, or if it works differently, given the circumstances.

She eventually pulls up to a quiet street lined with red-brick Renaissance canal houses, bicycles and birch trees scattered along the sidewalks. It’s charming and bay-windowed and lush with the median strip that stretches along in front of it. It reminded him of Bel’s apartment in New York, where she took him after she wreaked havoc on his house. Funny how the tables have turned.

“Help me with the boxes?” she asks as she turns off the car engine.

Clothes, Documents, and Trinkets. The very essences of them packed up in just three boxes. Bel takes the first box and takes it to the door marked ‘15’, balancing it on one arm and knee as she unlocks the key. Harry slings his duffel bag across his shoulders and piles up the other boxes, shutting the boot closed.

He doesn't know what to expect from the house itself. There's a white couch with light blue throw pillows and a box of TV set uninstalled on top of the coffee table. The house winds down to a kitchen/dining room area adorned with more moving boxes labeled Dinnerware and Pots & Pans and the likes. The walls along the stairs are bare from pictures and paintings, although Harry can already see what they’re gonna put up.

It doesn’t look like a home-- not yet, but they’re gonna make it so.

“You can put your photos up right here,” she breaks the silence as they climb up the stairs. “I like the ones you took in Nairobi. And Seoul.”

“And the ones I’m gonna take here.” his stomach flips at the thought of taking pictures of her by the canal, lying around in the park, by the Christmas tree in the living room, or in the confines of their bedroom...

Bel’s voice gently coaxes him out of his reverie. “Here we are.”

Harry follows her lead and puts down the boxes on the floor. The bedroom is light and airy; the morning light streaming through sheer curtains upon the warm bed. The lavender throw pillows add a pop color to the white sheets, slightly askew from being slept on. He can imagine her twisted in the bedsheets, and he can’t wait to be entangled with her for the rest of time.

“Do you like it?” she seizes his trim waist, kissing his shoulder from behind. “We can always… redecorate.”

“Don’t be absurd, I love it.” he all but tuts at her as he turns around. He gazes deep into her eyes, soft as he says, “Thank you.”

She knows he means more than that. Thank you, for coming back. For fighting for him, and for sitting out when she needs to. For waiting. For her patience and her stubbornness. Her everything.

And he knows she knows that, too. He doesn’t need her to say anything else. He’s more than happy to see her gaze back and utter her promise once again.

“Any day, kid.”

The simplest phrase, the shortest of nicknames, and yet it sounds lovelier than any love song he’s ever heard.

Bel laughs, and Harry stands corrected. “I can’t even call you ‘kid’ anymore. You’ve got grey hairs now.” her hand flies to the side of his head, right where she stitched him up that one time.

He rolls his eyes at her, although the fond smile doesn’t leave his features. He kisses her, still beaming at this beautiful, impossible girl standing before him. A whole decade after she turned his life upside down, and she somehow managed to piece everything together until it makes sense.

And it all makes sense now. This home, this moment, this… feeling.

She kisses him back in earnest. Returning his kiss with every bit the same kind of elation, smiles clashing together and all.

They fall into bed, soft and unhurried, seemingly happy to just drink in each other’s lips in each other’s embrace indefinitely. Taking all the sweet time that’s been robbed off of them all this time. There’s nowhere else they need to be. Not anymore.

There will be this, and there will always be.

The clothes eventually come off and the kisses grow more heated and spill over to every inch of their skin. But still they don’t rush. You looked in the mirror over the bathroom sink. You’d passed the day with your sister, helping out with last minute wedding details. You hadn’t had much to do with Loki during the day, sequestered away with your sister and her friends. You hadn’t even seen your parents since a hurried bit of toast before your sister had demanded your attention.

The only time you’d caught Loki was when you’d gone into the kitchen to find something to eat at around lunchtime. He’d been watching the kettle boil, not turning at your approach.

“You having fun with the boys?” you’d asked.

He’d snorted but hadn’t deigned to give you any more of an answer. Brad had included him in the bonding with the rest of his groomsmen, even if Loki wasn’t in the wedding party. You’d sent him off with a smile, hoping he wouldn’t be a dickhead towards them.

“Are you at least being civil?”

“Of course I am, love.”

The kettle had began to whistle, loud and shrill in the otherwise silent kitchen. He’d picked it up, pouring the liquid into his mug. You’d watched the way he moved like liquid, all smooth and graceful. You had always wished you could move like that, so effortless. But sadly you were not a demigod, just a normal, unextraordinary human.

He’d left you there, mug of tea cupped by long fingers and unfriendly eyes pointed away from you. You’d sighed but finished making a sandwich, retreating back into the safety of your sister’s bedroom.

Which led to your current predicament.

You were standing in the bathroom, freshly showered, in a pair of leggings and a tight tank top. You brushed your hair behind your ear, trying out your most seductive look. You grimaced, shaking your hair back into place. There was a reason you’d never been used as a honeypot in any mission before. You weren’t known for the art of seduction.

A loud knock sounded on the wooden door. You sighed, pulling it open. On the other side was Brad, towel in hand. You gave him a tight smile.

“You done in here?” he asked.

“Sure, it’s all yours.”

You slipped past him, your own towel slung over your arm. He gave you a friendly pat on the shoulder as you passed. You made your way back down the hall, stopping outside your bedroom door. You took a deep breath.

Loki was sitting in his chair again, book in had, face turned away from you. You hung your towel up on the back of the door then turned to face him. His eyes never strayed from the paper.

“I was thinking about what you said last night,” you said conversationally, “and you were right.”

“About?” His voice was neutral and he still wasn’t looking at you but you took it as a good sign that he was asking.

“Things did appear different this morning,” you said.

“I’m glad to hear it,” he said.

“That doesn’t mean I think I was wrong though,” you replied.

“Of course you don’t.”

“Pretending to be with you doesn’t mean I can’t talk to Jake, even if it is in the middle of the night while we’re alone.”

“Of course it does.”

“Even if I was sleeping with him, it would not matter,” you said, “we’re only pretending so if you were the only one who knew then it wouldn’t be a big deal. Unless you wanted to tell everyone. And I hope you wouldn’t.”

“Are you having an affair with him?”

“I can’t see why it would matter to you.”

“I can’t play this part if I don’t know all the facts.”

“Just lie. Isn’t that what you always do?”

He turned back to his book but you could see the muscle in his jaw tighten. You watched him from a moment, the way he ran his finger over the edge of the paper telling you of his agitation. His eyes weren’t moving over the words in his book. You couldn’t be sure he was breathing.

“Don’t you want to know why things appeared different this morning?” you asked, taking a step towards him.

“I truly could not care care less,” he replied.

“I think you might about this.”

You stopped in front of him, waiting for his eyes to meet yours. He dragged his gaze up your body, sending shivers down your spine.

“And why is that?”

“Because I’m finally ready to hear about those untamed dreams of yours.”

His reaction was instantaneous. He dropped the book, his hands shooting out to grasp your hips in a vice like grip. He jerked you forward until you landed on his lap, a knee either side of him. You looked down at him, still processing the change in position. His eyes were smouldering, his lips thin. You placed your hands on his shoulders.

“You have no idea what you are asking for,” he growled.

“Oh, I think I do.”

You ground down on him. He hissed, his fingers tightening on you. You brought your face closer to his, letting your breath ghost over his face. His mouth opened in invitation.

“Are you going to tell me?” you whispered.

“I’d rather show you.”

You kissed him then, all teeth and tongue, desperation in every iota of your being. His hands slid up your back, crushing your body against his. You moaned into his mouth, your hands sliding into his hair. He nipped at your lower lip, tugging on it. You rolled your hips, enjoying the way he groaned.

“Careful, love, or I may have to show you what happens to mortals who think they’re in control,” he murmured against your lips.

You did it again.

He growled, picking you up. He threw you on the bed, crawling over your body as you bounced on the mattress. You wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him back down to kiss you. You strained up towards him. His hands traveled up your body, stopping just below your breasts. You whined.

His hands slipped down again, tugging your legs up around his waist. He trailed his lips down, finding your pulse point. His teeth nipped at your skin. Your head fell back as you tangled your fingers in his hair.

He kissed you again, this time slower, deeper, taking your breath away from the intensity of it. His arms curled around your body, pulling you up until you were sitting on his lap again in the middle of the bed. He ran his cold fingers up your spine, underneath the thin fabric of your tank top. You gasped into his mouth.

“Keep making those pretty noises for me, love,” he murmured, running his lips along your jaw.

“Loki,” you moaned, tugging on his hair.

Your lips slammed into his again, pushing him back. You hovered over him. He was grinning at you, his eyes sparkling. You rested your hands on his chest as you sat back on his heels, considering him.

“This seems rather tame, Loki,” you said.

“And yet it has resulted in my being in the bed,” he replied.

“I suppose it has,” you murmured, “would you like to stay in it?”

“Only if you are with me.”

You kissed him in answer.
