HA. i think i'm pretty good at writing out the way characters think. my manner of typing is practically me transcribing my own internal speech patterns, and that naturally gets projected onto the characters i'm writing. it DOES result in my characters all sounding vaguely californian (i really do say 'like' a LOT), but it works in the case of jatp where the characters are californian B)

i also think i'm good at dialogue, specifically at making them actually sound like people talking. and while i'd never call myself properly funny, i know i'm good at making myself laugh, so i hope that joy is reflected in my writing.

i... don't think so? my friends from high school knew, but i haven't spoken to them in years so i am unsure if they still count as irls.

🤯 - what's a genre you struggle with as a writer (ex. romance, action, etc.)?

ACTION 100%. loving zelda and fire emblem makes this especially tragic. my ass is never going to write a compelling sword fight but you can bet i will at least try.

i'm very invested in julie's conceptual relationship with rage (and it's actually something i touch on in the next chapter of 22c). maybe this sounds crazy, but if i were julie and i was being bullied for roughly a full year because i was depressed that my mom died and the only person who had my back was my best friend and everyone else was complicit through participation or silence, i would be PISSED that people started to think i was cool after a single performance and then act like everything was fine forever.

the AUDACITY of people asking her for selfies after the garage party is so striking to me. julie deserves to be pissed!!! she deserves to be angry!!!!! like if s2 happened i needed her to have a scene yelling at nick (even if it's only possessed!nick) bc he literally just stood there and let carrie say whatever she wanted for a year.

The most self-indulgent thing I can think off??? Oh my... that might just be something for Criminal Minds because my mind is currently slightly obsessed with the show... and i normally wouldnt right something for the show, so I guess it fits the whole self-indulgent bit... I'll definitely give it a try :D

Okay, so at 373 words... set mid-season 6, an Outsider POV:

It took Agent Seaver three weeks and four days to realize why the BAU unsettled her as much as it did. At first she couldn’t put her finger on it, this strange vibe that seeped into every interaction she had with the team, but after two cases and at least three uncomfortable attempts at small talk, she could no longer ignore it.

It was more than just her relative newness – Emily had taken her under her wing, and Rossi seemed to like her just fine. No, there was something else at play here.

They were on the jet home from yet another tiring and gruesome case when Ashley finally figured it out.

“So, any weekend plans?”

Her question was met with secretive smiles and tired shoulder shrugs. In the end it was Reid who answered, “Emily and I are going to watch Dark Planet on Saturday, and on Sunday I’m going to meet up with JJ for brunch.” A beat of silence before he remembered it was polite to ask questions during a conversation to keep it going. “And you?”

“A birthday party on Friday with some college friends, lunch on Saturday with my mom, and rock climbing with some academy buddies on Sunday.”

“That’s a pretty packed weekend, isn’t it?” Morgan’s eyebrow was arching high.

“Seems normal to me.”

“Speaking off, I can’t remember the last birthday we didn’t celebrate together.”

It was as if a dam had broken, everyone sharing birthday stories now that Reid had admitted to celebrating with the BAU. Only Ashley seemed to be the only outlier. Hotch recalled everyone showing up to his son Jack’s celebration last month, and Rossi complained about the team hogging his kitchen. Thinking about it there seemed no part of their lives that didn’t touch and intervene.

They were horribly co-dependent, Seaver suddenly realized.

Morgan had warned her about this, told her that everyone needed something just for them (Morgan’s construction work, Garcia’s grief counselling, Emily’s cat, Reid’s park chess tournaments) but at the end of the day, the BAU was a study of failed boundaries and excessive co-dependency.

She was on the outside because she still had a life outside of the BAU.

It wasn’t really a comforting realization to have.

18. Which writing "rules" do you regularly break?

Mostly grammar rules, but only when I feel it is justified. I do KNOW how to use grammar. But I'm not afraid to start a sentence with a conjunction. Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I WILL put.

24. Do you think a lot about story structures/arc?

I used to not, but I also used to almost exclusively write one-shots. But in working on my current fic, "sounds like u might be a bit butthurst about this" (The title is what it is don't worry about it) I have thought about it a lot. Especially because it employs non-linear storytelling so I have to be mindful about what information is being revealed when and what it reveals about the characters. 25. Do you use foreshadowing?

I don't think so. Well, I guess I do because like I said, my current fic is non-linear. So sometimes a chapter will hint at something that happened in the past, but that the reader hasn't encountered yet

So uh. This sat in my drafts for over a year and it's well past the point where it's weird to respond but I checked my drafts again and I feel as though at this point I must respond. So.

15. Recommend and review a book.

Going to recommend The Langya List by Hai Yan because hoooooooooooooooooooooooly fucking shit this has the best political drama I've ever read. Everyone is playing 4D chess with each other except for the protagonist who's playing 5D chest. It's set in the Southern Liang Kingdom during the Northen and Southern Dynasties period in 6th century China; beyond the incredible political plots that come about, there's a massive ensemble cast that's amazingly fleshed out and it's a story about finding justice for 70,000 dead souls who were wronged. It also was adapted into the TV show Nirvana in Fire which I personally believe is the best TV show to ever exist so maybe I'm a bit biased but this genuinely is one of my favorite of my recent reads.

17. Top 5 children’s books

Gotta be honest I don't remember very many so I will give you a few series instead as well as some novels. I also haven't read these in ages so it's possible I might go back and be like what the hell was I reading but this is what I remember

The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Andrews was a book I ADORED as a kid. It was a bright and colourful tale of a fantastical land, strange creatures, and brave siblings. Even now, many years later, I still remember much of it and might go back and take a read again.

All-of-a-kind family by Sydney Taylor is a story of five young Jewish siblings during the beginning of the 20th century. It's a slice-of-life sort of book and it had me hooked with their tales despite (or perhaps because of) how mundane it was. It was a cute romanticisation of childhood and daily life and I think it's a pretty timeless tale.

I, Coriander by Sally Gardner is a fantastical tale that's dark and grim and incredibly gripping. It's a story of familial tragedy, abuse, greed, jealousy, and magic. It's more a YA novel than a kid's book for sure.

The Buckshaw Chronicles by Ian Bradley was one of my favorites when I was like, 11. Featured a young girl detective, a la Sherlock Holmes, who ran around solving murders.

Percy Jackson was a huge cornerstone for me. It got me into greek mythology (despite its inaccuracies) and then the sequel Heroes of Olympus featured the first ever Chinese Canadian character I've ever seen in ANY mainstream media. Was he an accurate depiction? Not really. But the fact he was there still meant something to me.

18. Do you like historical books? Which time period?

Holy shit yeah. Give me any pre-Qing Dynasty Imperial China and I will be hooked.

20. What are things you look for in a book?

I don't have huge requirements beyond liking books that have messages I can ultimately be neutral/agree with. Like if it's just going to spew discriminatory talking points that's a hard no, but that's a given. Other than that though I'm game so long as the prose is great.

Hell yeah - besides my word programm giving me every single verb ending in "red", I did find an actual mention of the color!

In my current Criminal Minds fic...

The words on the screen in front of him blurred, a migraine building behind his temples like a storm front. Reid could already tell that it was going to be a big one, maybe a hurricane even. The taste of oxidised iron flooded his mouth, his teeth worrying his lips after he had once again failed to ignore this mirage of a person once loved.

(Mammalian blood consists of plasma, red and white cells (erythrocytes and leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes). Common blood disorders include polycythemia, anemia, leukaemia-)

And I even found ONE instance of red in my current DC fic:

A continuation of my Medusa post here.

Since people have been asking for links and sources about Medusa, I'll provide a little bibliography of various sources you can compare and debate about. Note that the bibliography about Medusa is even wider and bigger than the little samples I provide below, but I think they form a good "basic set" or "starting kit". (And I might have forgotten things, since I originally wrote my post unplanned and wasn't ready for it to blow up so much. I am just a tiny little blog that didn't get as much as seven likes on my biggest things you know Xp)

First of all, a resource that is fully available for free on Google Books: here, or here. It is called "Dangerous Beauties: Medusa in Classical Art", a Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, published in the winter of 2017. Very beautiful and informative with lot of nice art. There's also more about the exposition tied to this publication here. There was another publication by the Metropolitan Museum that can be of some interest, Majorie Milne's "Perseus and Medusa on an Attic Vase".

When it comes to English-speaking books analysing and dissecting the Medusa myth, two works keep popping up everywhere. 2003's "The Medusa Reader", and Stephen Wilk's "Medusa: Solving the Mystery of the Gorgon". They do form references when it comes to the overview, analysis and evolution of the Gorgon figure. Other works of note include David Leeming's "Medusa in the Mirror of Time", and Thalia Feldman's "Gorgo and the Origins of Fear" (published within "Arion", I don't know if it had been published elsewhere). The Internet Archive has a free copy, right here, of Frederick Thomas Elworthy's "The Evil Eye: The Classical Account of an Ancient Superstition".

If you can read French, go read Jean-Pierre Vernant's works that tackled the Gorgon: "La mort dans les yeux: Figures de l'Autre en Grèce Ancienne", (Death in the eyes: Figures of the Other in Ancient Greece - explores the legends of the Gorgon and of Artemis) ; and his co-work with Pierre-Vidal Naquet "Mythe et tragédie en Grèce Ancienne" (Vernant did wrote in English a part of The Medusa Reader, the article "In the mirror of Medusa"). Jean Clair also wrote an interesting document: "Méduse. Contribution à une anthropologie des arts du visuel."

And finally, the cherry at the top, the Internet Archive even has a copy of the scholia (well, one of them), in which the old Pherecyde tales are described - the ones that make proof the idea of Medusa having been turned into a monster by Athena due to a crime of vanity and boasting is as old as the 5th century BC. It is right here. If you like to read Latin, go have fun.

'But the image of a dining table still laid for dinner is merging with a table in a kitchen with chips in the wood from when Sarah was first learning how to use a knife merging with the table he’d left behind in Boston covered in a map and crushed pills. Tess’ words echo back to him ‘that isn’t my home’.' (for a last of us fic that i'm not sure i'll finish but 🤷🏻‍♀️)

i do enjoy researching!! there's just something very fun about finding out new information about random little topics i would have no other reason to look up! honestly it's a toss up between the runaway royals au because i did a lot of reading up on time accurate clothing and ff!luke because shockingly, i do not know very much about firefighters lmao

36. What fic are you proudest of?

honestly probably the lucky one and a lot of that is just because i actually managed to finish the damn thing. but also i just think it's some of my best work overall? like i'm so proud of the actual story and plot and how the characters work in that 'verse while still hopefully being true to canon.

74. Do you have a fic you wish got a bit more love?

i mean this is partly because its the first thing i've finished in months but my silly little jatp x ouat fic BUT my reggie 5+1 too because photographer reggie is so close to my heart and i just love how this fic turned out!

It turns out Type-1 Diabetes can be incredibly dangerous, especially when you don’t know you have it in the first place. Now three chapters, and featuring a much needed Percy and Nico heart to heart.

Percy glared at him, pouting. He looked back at his dog as she chased after a bee. She was kinda bigger, he had to admit, but that didn’t mean anything, right? Granted, he didn’t really know where she went to most of the time, what with her shadow-travelling all the time. But when she was around he was very careful on feeding her healthy stuff…or the healthiest part of what was left on his plate anyway. She was not fat.
