Character Playlist: Gwen (Shújūn) Liu
Number four in our character playlist series, this time for episode 4, which is focused on our beloved Gwen / Shújūn. Like the other playlists for Dai, Morgan and Perry, I'll be going through track by track and talking a bit more about Gwen's character and why I included these specific songs. Enjoy!
1.Mirror Mirror by Juniper Vale
Followed me into a dream
And twirled me out of time
Down a trail of twisted tales
That mythemized my mind
All my memories they ring a bell
But taper with each toll
Mirror, mirror who am I now?
I don't know
Like everyone, Gwen is struggling with identity in this apocalypse. Especially as a woman who grew up in Hong Kong and is now stranded in the UK, with no way to know what's happened to her friends and family, being judged and shaped by a British story, she's being pulled in a lot of different directions at once. For her, it feels like a very strange waking dream. She's probably the most Alice in Wonderland character in the series.
2. Paper Mache by Iris Lune
I almost lost everything I got to this
Scratch at my soul, I clench my fist
Counting the lights on my way out
There is no time to lose, must replay the scene
Fundamentally Gwen is a survivor. She was alone in a monster-infested wilderness for far too long, and as to what happened to the other survivors she was with? It wasn't pretty. Gwen is the definition of that quote about hope being covered in blood and mud and getting up again anyway.
3. Eastward of Eden by Amelia Day
Our children, they spread to outnumber the stars
Oh, Eastward of Eden, where day turns to dark
Dark
Leave it all, leave it all, leave it all behind
The world ended. And again, Gwen in particular feels lost in an alien and foreign landscape, completely disconnected from the world she knew. She has family in the UK - aunts and cousins, but she only moved to Leicester for university. Now she's 6,000 miles from Hong Kong and trapped, forced to forge a new path for herself with no one there to help her. And on top of all of that, she's inherited this strange, massive power that influences her interactions with everything and everyone she meets.
4. All Things Devour by aeseaes
worms and spiders
spin inside her
like the story
make me holy
this thing all things devours
Gwen, like the others in the gang with Names, has a very conflicted relationship with Guinevere. She sees the name as a tool, a weapon in her arsenal that's helped her survive. But she's also painfully aware that she's dancing with fire, and she's seen the ways that her Name puts her and the people she loves in danger, too. She worries that one day she'll put the costume on and not be able to take it off.
5. Sad Forever by Lauv
'Cause lately, I've been in the backseat to my own life
Trying to take control, but I don't know how to
I don't wanna be sad forever
I don't wanna be sad no more
I don't wanna wake up and wonder
What the hell am I doing this for?
Gwen is a woman whose actions speak louder than words. She has to be careful around Perry, Morgan and Dai because she's a stranger and she needs the shelter they offer. But privately, she's determined not to give into fear or despair, despite all the grief and horror she's suffered. She's so frustrated by the way she's being pulled around this apocalypse like a puppet, and she's determined to take the reins.
6. Only Lonely by The Ballroom Thieves
She knows I have a tendency
I make mountains out of stones
And with that timber, burn a hundred fires
The first time they meet, Morgan brings Gwen back to reality. Morgan's stubbornness, her directness and her anger help snap Gwen out of the daydream of the story and back into reality. Gwen finds Morgan fascinating, and funny, and grounding like nothing and no one else she's ever met. Whenever Gwen is scared of getting lost in the clouds and being unable to come back, Morgan anchors her.
7. On Board by Alana Henderson
I'll be the figurehead
On your ship's bow
I'll be the last glimpse of a topsail
As we go down
I'll be waiting on the seabed
Repeating the words
Don't forget (you said), ships were not built to be safe
Gwen is maybe more conscious than Morgan of how explosive and dangerous to both of them their closeness can be - the way that others might see it as a threat, the way their own stories might react in ways they can't predict. And despite this, despite knowing that Morgan is an objectively dangerous woman to her, Gwen can't help but be drawn to her.
8. Throw Me in the Water by WILD
Pushin' away
Only gets me closer
Fallin' fast
Can we move it slower?
Morgan is not good at creating relationships. Gwen is amazing at making new friends, and Gwen can see all the ways that Morgan prickles and pushes her away. Gwen chooses to ignore the spiky armour Morgan wears. If anything, she finds it an interesting challenge. Morgan is the wild untamed stallion and Gwen is the horse girl in this movie. Gwen desperately wants to untangle the knot that Morgan is and see what lies underneath, again, despite all the danger that presents.
9. We Will All Be Changed by Seryn
We look for home, but we'll never know
Distance will grow, but I'll always know
What happened to Hong Kong and her dad, Kai, is a huge unanswered question that lingers over Gwen's head every day, this unresolved grief that she has to get up every day and live with. But she keeps going, in the hope that one day she'll answer it.

(G) (Word Count: 1,800) Future Fic, Fluff, Kid-Fic
--
"Again! Again!"
"I don't know you two…"
"Just one more time, and then we'll stop asking, we promise."
Alex sighs and looks down at Andrew and Alice's sweet, cherubic faces, cheeks flushed from the cold and hair wild from the wind.
Tiny tyrants. Master negotiators. They have Alex wrapped around their little, royal fingers, and they know it.
"Please, Uncle Alex," Alice asks as she steps forward. She's the older of the two, the mouthpiece, and Alex can't look directly at her, or else he knows he'll fold.
"Your Uncle Alex is tired, okay? He's old."
"Uncle Henry is older and plays with us longer."
A dirty trick, tapping into Alex's love of competition. She's brutal, destined to rule the UK with an iron fist, but for now, she's only a six-year-old girl who cannot boss Alex around.
"Maybe when your Uncle Henry comes back from talking with your dad, he can take over, but until then—."
"Please, please, please, please!" Alice chants as she throws her arms around Alex's leg.
Andrew toddles his way over and wraps his arms around Alex's other leg, looking up at Alex with a pronounced pout.
"Jesus Christ," Alex mumbles under his breath.

Less = More With Keyword
When you've got a 500 phrase article, attempt placing a keyword in every paragraph. Because the Japanese word for cute, kawaii has connotations of shyness, embarrassment, vulnerability, darlingness and lovability. Visits to Japanese cities reverberating with squeals of “Kawaaaiiiiiii! Other massive cities will have related websites. Only a small proportion of individuals are inclined to click on a keyword advert or search result listing, however your ad or listing is going to be apparent time and time once more to individuals trying to find terms you may have bid on or sold, increasing your site advertising. Wanting at the adult landscape, with its pressures of debt, competition and accountability, it is not any marvel that folks want to escape into the infinite time, house and promise of childhood. Press the house key then arrow keys to select. ” might make this fad straightforward to dismiss as just another exoticism of the East. It’s crucial to try to collect as many keyword potentialities as you can, as you may discover out that your smaller pool of terms are extremely aggressive and tougher to rank for, which will require you to return to this step again later on. But the presence of costumed adults lining up for London’s own Comedian-Con, a Swarovski-encrusted Howdy Kitty price hundreds of pounds, and the profiling of Lolita trend in magazine articles and V&A exhibits, show that cute tradition is not just spreading past Asia, however it’s right here to stay.
Cute and playful, the tradition continues to evolve and the latest in kawaii can always be found in Japantown. Small Internet sites and residence servers can get crippled when four hundred visitors a day instantly turns into 5,000 in two hours. Assume infants and small fluffy creatures. However whereas kawaii could seem like a closing of 1 door, held in its small furled fist is a key that opens another. Chances are you'll not have observed, however look carefully and Howdy Kitty has no mouth. RESULTSPrice and other particulars could fluctuate primarily based on product size and shade. Pastel Coloration Block Tee, A-Line Skirt, Sailor Gown, Two Piece Costume. The babydoll informal dress, smocked casual dresses with Peter Pan collars, off the shoulder informal dresses, shirred casual dresses, smocked casual dresses, and finally informal dresses with pockets! Because the financial system progressed by the 1970s and 1980s, so did client subcultures - and cute as a mode began to be expressed by means of childish handwriting, speech, costume, products, retailers, cafes and food. In the 1980s, magazines and comics adopted this fashion of writing for packaging and advertising. However in case your writing about wildlife you can see fewer websites that specialize in that topic. Sometimes with sites like SheIn the quality isn’t the perfect however, these prices are incredibly low.
For us, Kawaii Amai is a neighborhood crammed with treasure troves of top quality hand-picked cute & kawaii merchandise, specifically coated for you our most dear buyer. More Info : Do not often should pay customer charges. Hi there Kitty & Pals have arrived at the ARTBOX Cafe in Brighton, UK with super cute food, adorable decor and a shop stuffed with Sanrio treats! The Tremendous Cute E book of Kawaii is our first e-book! If Alice in Wonderland is your favourite guide you may love these kawaii picks with bunny plush, e book bag, crochet sample, stickers and more. A brand new methodology to extend their rankings grew to become increasingly crucial. The rationale for this is commonly times the advertising director lacks the knowledge to promote the group in a approach that is conducive to attracting online web surfers each globally to extend general franchise places but in addition regional advertising and marketing that coincides with the most recent developments similar to Myspace, Linkedin, Fb, on-line video, social bookmarking, distinctive article submission and targeted press launch submission. It’s not only a means of escape and denial, but additionally a technique to combat back against the curtailment of risk. Whereas keyword research can make it easier to uncover the keywords it's best to use when creating what you are promoting content, it’s also vital to have an understanding of how your industry competitors are using these similar key phrases and the successes they’re attaining with their very own strategy.
It’s also important that the various search engines see that your content material reflects your keyword meta tags, so use your most important keywords in the primary part of your site, such as the homepage Empire Components. Utilizing native key phrases to rank higher within the search outcomes. That you must take a holistic view of the worth your web site offers to users, then optimize your content material so that it will get the results you need. Selecting a selection ends in a full web page refresh. There are several filtering options accessible together with keyword textual content, exclude keywords, exclude adult concepts, common monthly searches, competitors, Ad impression share and top of page bid. To get the Mac App Store, click the Apple icon at the highest left of the screen, then select "software replace." After a dialog field seems, click on the "set up" button. As long as your mail recipients also have e-mail software program that is MIME-compliant (and most e-mail software is), you can swap recordsdata containing attachments automatically. You'll be able to tweak your title to spice up CTR and additional improve your keyword rankings. Considered one of an important components of competitive keyword analysis is to know your audience and what they’re concerned about.

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR My Body Is Not an Apology by Megha Sood
My Body is Not An Apology is a testimony of female rebellion and a journey of self-discovery in a most wanted and unwanted way. The poems roar to voice the pain of silent torture, cruelty, and agony of a woman’s heart to reclaim her dignity not only as a female but also as an individual. This book is a fierce approach to life in poetry, and the poet dissects the ironies of women’s existence with razor-sharp language, intellect, and courage like Simone de Beauvoir. In the poet’s own words, it is a triumphant proclamation and an unfettered declaration.
–Kalpna Singh-Chitnis (Poet, Writer, and Filmmaker)
Sometimes with acerbic irony, sometimes with wise comeuppance, but never with hopeless resignation no matter how bleak the refracted rays of reality, Megha’s stanzas find their way through the blind alleys of patriarchy and misogyny looking it unblinking in the eye. The vulnerability of her perception is also her strength, as each stanza duals with difficult truths using the female body and the form of poetry as weapons of grit and gumption. This little book is a fist of fury and unveiling.
–Rochelle Potkar, Author of Paper Asylum & Bombay Hangovers
These poems recognize the body as the ‘eye of the storm’ in the turbulent churning of our age. The guttural cry of the feminine forges these poems with a primal rawness cast in images as varied as radishes, pickles, broken book spines, and armchairs. Megha Sood joins her unapologetic voice with urgency to erase any error of ambiguity, ‘You don’t own shit’. These poems will ‘sit like a welt’ on the tongue of the world.
–Usha Akella, Poet & Founder, Matwaala, South Asian Diaspora Poetry Festival
A unique feminist exploration through the written word, investigating the body and the world society overlays atop women, Megha Sood does justice uncovering, discovering, and discarding herself to find an inexorably beautiful woman within. Sood’s My Body Is Not an Apology chisels away at the construct our society imposes on women, revealing an exemplar poet of the highest caliber.
–Joshua Corwin, author of Becoming Vulnerable
Megha Sood’s “My Body is Not an Apology” is a powerful debut with poetry that contains multitudes. These poems are fierce and unapologetic as they explore the toxic culture around gender-based discrimination and reproductive rights. Sood crafts with cutting precision as we read about personal experience and the influence of these issues in the wider world. Far from a desperate cry of the disenfranchised, these poems raise a fist and demand to be heard from a position of strength. Woven in and around every poem is the question that asks: what would life be like if we could change this? This book is a clarion call to eradicating gender-based injustice. It is also a book full of hope and empowerment.
–Juliette van der Molen, Poet, Writer,Feminist
My Body is Not an Apology by Megha Sood is a woman’s journey through gender-based discrimination. It is a cry and a plea as Sood questions, “How can you live a life like a broken spine of a book?” In her poems, we see a parallel to Sylvia Plath, and her words bring alive the voices of the Bronte Sisters, Emily Dickinson, and Phyllis Wheatley. At the same time, we see similarities to Sarojini Naidu’s rage and certitude when Sood says, “But I never give up …as I learned from the footsteps of warriors.” Sood’s My Body is Not An Apology is a whimper, a roar, an awakening in the feminist world.
–Meenakshi Mohan, Ed.D., Professor, writer, painter, critic
Megha Sood’s poems show a vulnerability that is welded to resilience in remarkably ingenious ways because poetry occupies the interstice between the felt and the unspoken.
Don’t let the aroma leave the pickle jar
Keep the lid tight
my granny used to say–
Some things are better left unspoken. (Even My Grief Should Be Productive)
Here’s the wisdom of an entire civilization. Sometimes it comes pickled in a jar. Call it Indian or South Asian, or what you will. It teaches you how to hold one’s own, anywhere.
–Lakshmi Kannan, Poet, Novelist, Short story writer, and Translator.
Megha Sood’s chapbook, My Body Is Not An Apology is exactly what the title says. The human body is not an apology for anyone. It’s not meant to make us feel ashamed simply for being born as we are, for existing, for belonging to any race, religion, gender, age, or any diversity markers that exist in our world. Our body is also not space where anyone can reside with abuse, disdain, or evil. Our body is a temple where our soul lives protected and safe. Megha through her deeply sensitive and poignant poems urges readers to ponder, deliberate, and act upon ensuring that our body is not an apology. Megha’s poems are fierce and tender at the same time. They are like raging storms or quiet whispers; both compel us to listen, look and consider. Megha delves into a plethora of issues that plague the human mind and in consequence the body. She questions and pulls the reader back again and again to her poems leaving behind a memory of heightened awareness. Very few writers can do as such. This collection of twenty-five poems will surely leave a mark upon your heart. Among the contemporary diaspora writers, Megha Sood is one to definitely read!

“I would venture to guess that Anon, who wrote so many poems without signing them, was often a woman.”—Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own
The gripping, riveting poems of Megha Sood’s chapbook ‘My Body Is Not An Apology’ carries the inherent legacy of the truths that our exemplary literary predecessors Virginia Woolf, Maya Angelou, Sylvia Plath, Nikki Giovani, Alice Walker, Kamala Das, and others, embodying unabashed feminism, upheld in their poetic creations.
When the poet utters her angst and her rhetoric reflects a discourse, built around the quintessential strength of a woman, these lines are born from her pen: “My body is not an apology/ it’s a roar: a declaration/ an unapologetic/ unabashed/ straight truth in your face/ a war cry:/ a deafening scream from the silence.” These lines hit the nail at just the right place, confronting the age-old power dynamics of a patriarchal social structure. As a strong woman of color, as a sensitive poet, her verses in the collection are like smoking cinders of the thinking feminine voice, empowering and liberating the feminine psyche. In the growth of her poetic voice, she has successfully absorbed the little nuances of her Indian roots and her grandmother’s legacy of truth (reflected in the poem ‘Even My Grief Should Be Productive), at the same time, having the deep insight of a woman acknowledging that her ‘body goes from a shade darker than yesterday’, as she gives birth to her ‘own revolution’. In the collection, the body and being of the poet as a woman reaches its zenith of celebration as she categorically unfolds the themes of the feminine identity, body politics, repression of womanhood, and also, the rampant rhetorics of violence ingrained in our postmodern society. Her voice is both subtle and empowering, essential and redeeming, hence the chapbook will indeed be an asset in the ever-evolving arena of feminist writing and art.

Midnight Sun - 2.5* review
I would first like the thank the academy for getting me through this nightmare of a book. I'd also like to thank my stubborn nature for not DNFing it before it got good around the 550 mark. Overall, this book was a drag. The pacing was way off and the narration was irritating. Edward is whiny and angsty and can drag a scene out for 10 more pages than it was from Bella's perspective. The way his super vampire thought processes are described is extremely pretentious and obviously an attempt to seem cool, and to be frank, I hated every second of it. The only time these dramatics let up was during the action sequences, which are all crowded in during the last 200 pages of the book and are the only parts I actually cared about seeing from his perspective. I've been waiting for this book for 10 years so I was very much disappointed that I only enjoyed the last bit.
I will be going into depth about some things I noticed, good, bad, and ugly, so beware of spoilers beyond this point if for some reason you don't already know what happened.
The Interesting Bits
-Edward and Alice have whole conversations without the others knowing by her thinking at him and him changing his expressions or moving slightly. I thought this was pretty smart. Edward is the lookout for his family. He's in charge of knowing public opinion and if someone suspects them to be vampires, but he's also the one to keep an eye on Jasper to make sure he's not struggling.
-Edward hates Bella to begin with, especially during their first meeting. He also likes "violent music" and uses it while doing his usual angst routine. Once he gets over that, he observes Bella doing kind, selfless things that bring her out of her comfort zone, just to help others. He also wanted things with Bella he hadn't ever wanted before, and its implied in the context of the scene that this includes a physical relationship. He honestly gives me demisexual vibes and has done since I read Twilight.
-Alice is the only one who is acting with empathy and consistently thinking of humans as people. "Her name is Whitney. She has a baby sister she adores." "She's Charlie Swan's only family. It would kill him, too."
-Tanya is Russian. Just throwing that in there.
-Jasper's brother Peter was turned in the 1940s, so Jasper was with Maria for approximately 90 years, owing to Peter being in the army at least a year and however long it took Peter to make his way back to him after leaving. Also owing to the time between Jasper leaving and finding Alice, he could only have been with the Cullens for 50 years at the most.
-Humans have to put in effort to move vampires as they are very heavy. Edward moves his hand along with Bella when she wants to pick it up. Also when he jumps back he has to check to make sure he didn't rip her hands off.
-Vampires feel thirst differently. Some feel fire and some feel dryness or acid.
-Turning into a vampire is usually described in the books and the fandom spaces as burning, but here it's described as pain, and it packs more of a punch, makes it more real. Edward flinches when thinking about the pain and refuses to subject Bella to it.
-Charlie's thoughts are very difficult to hear, and are mostly vague impressions. Renee's are extremely loud and influence those around her without anyone knowing.
-My favourite part is where Jasper shines through, because he is my fave for character complexity reasons. Basically, there's a huge car chase to get to Bella at the ballet studio, Edward and Alice are doing some very cool things with their powers, but Alice sees Bella in the studio and Edward freaks out until he doesn't anymore. Jasper has been influencing them into a battle state, which is how the coolness of the scene has been going so smoothly and he can get them both back on track after each vision. He has a very tight grip on Edward's emotions, "like a fist clenched tight around [his] throat". For reference: pages 648-654 UK hardback. It's the coolest scene in the book and I forgot Carlisle and Emmett were also there.
The bad/questionable
-Alice sees how Bella reacts to Edward leaving her, and how messed up she gets, but he still chooses to leave her in New Moon.
-Edward has this whole pages long inner monologue during the meadow scene about how many things he can think about in detail and how smart he is and how perfect his memory is. It's highly pretentious and annoying.
-On page 508-509 Edward licks Bella's teardrop and dramatically monologues to himself about how he, as a vampire, can't digest or absorb water, so when Bella inevitably leaves him to become a puddle of sadness he will still have a part of her with him in the form of that tear. I'll admit I laughed, then went to go tell someone about it and laughed some more, because it's so ridiculous and I couldn't make it up if I tried. This entire section was 4 paragraphs long.
-The plot hole of why the nomads can't tell Bella is human before the wind comes gets solved, and then immediately creates another plot hole. Edward disguises her heartbeat with foot tapping, and they magically can't smell her, and then Edward realises Jasper has made most of them seem very boring with his empathy powers but in a way Edward has never seen before despite being a mind reader in his head when he remembers the past. Somehow his convenient powers have never been so much as thought of in 50 years.
The huge red flags:
-Edward refers to Bella's classmates as "children" twice and yet he is still willing to date her, despite them being the same age as her.*
-Bella asks Edward if he has multiple personality disorder because he is avoiding her and then talking to her seemingly at random.*
-Bella says she is "So clumsy that [she's] almost disabled."*
-Edward calls Jacob a "child" and when Bella points out he's almost the same age as her, he says he knows. This is super creepy.*
-Alice stole Bella's crutch to stop her escaping when tricking her into going to prom.
*These are also in Twilight, and as such have already been talked about.
In conclusion, this book sucks except the last 200 or so pages. This has been the longest 2 1/2 months of my life.

Ten Years - Part One
summary: ten years after 2007 Warped Tour, Shawn and Val come face to face in London
warnings: Language, that good yearning
WC: 3.3k
A/N: this is a post-epilogue miniseries of I Could Write It Better Than You Ever Felt It. I recommend you read that first or this will make you go 🤔
------------
Shawn has never felt further from his 19-year-old self than right now, squished into what has to be the world’s tiniest lift with Val and Alice and Alice’s very large, fancy pram.
The rickety lift slowly drags them up to the third floor of the old building. In the mirrored doors, Shawn watches them, saved from Val’s returning gaze as she focuses on making faces at her sleepy baby. Her back is pressed up against his chest. He can smell the achingly familiar citrus scent of her hair. But he can barely recognize the boy that ran away from this girl.
The lift stops with an alarming little jolt but Val looks unbothered. She hands the pram off to Shawn to steer while she fishes keys out of her purse. Shawn walks slowly, gazing down at Alice’s round and curious face. Who are you to be taking up my mommy’s attention? She seems to say. Shawn’s lower lip twitches. Who, indeed.
Val lets them into the dark flat. It’s roomier than Shawn expected, having seen the modest building from the outside. As Val flips on lights, Shawn’s hungry eyes suck in as much as they can, committing it to memory for further study.
The walls are a rich shade of deep, deep red. The furniture is modern but comfortable. There are bookshelves in every corner, packed full of fantasy, art texts and music biographies. He stumbles over a stuffed colorful caterpillar toy. It makes Val chuckle.
He looks up at her and watches as she drops her jacket onto a hanger and kicks her boots into a corner next to a teeny tiny pair of cleats that make him smile.
“Already got her on a club team?” he rasps, finding his voice has failed him slightly. Val graciously ignores it and glances over at the cleats.
“Aren’t those hilarious? Raf sent those for her a few weeks ago. They were his daughter’s when she was Alice’s size.”
Shawn smiles and tucks his hands into his jacket pockets, rocking back and forth. He’s gazing around, memorizing as casually as possible, when he feels her warmth again. He looks down to see her smirking up at him. He ducks his head and chuckles. There never was any hiding from Val.
“Wanna stay for dinner? I was going to order takeaway.”
He grins at her British -ism and bites into his lower lip, nodding at her fridge. “I can cook if you want.”
Val’s eyebrows lift. Shawn’s laugh is low and gravelly. His voice is still not working quite right. He thinks it’s prolonged exposure to her coming out of nowhere. He doesn’t really mind. She could always understand exactly what he was saying even when he was babbling helplessly, even when he wasn’t speaking at all.
“You can… cook?”
Shawn rolls his eyes and shucks off his jacket, placing it on the back of a barstool at her modest kitchen island.
“I did grow up a little in the last ten years,” he sighs, wandering into her kitchen curiously.
“I noticed.”
Shawn freezes almost comically. His hand is halfway to the fridge handle. He blinks and turns his head slightly to look at her. She’s wearing the smile that’s haunted him for ten years, the one that’s so signature Val -- it’s a dare and a promise all in one. He swallows so hard his throat visibly bobs.
She’s fucking flirting with him. And she doesn’t look like she did it accidentally.
His motor function comes back enough to open the refrigerator and look around, and also hope the cool air will reduce the pink burning in his cheeks. Val busies herself with freeing fussy Alice from the pram, holding her against her hip after shedding all her tiny little layers down to a pair of leggings and a long sleeved tee with the Arsenal FC logo on it.
Shawn studies the contents of the fridge. It doesn’t take long. He looks up at her, frowning disapprovingly.
“You don’t cook,” he says plainly.
Val snorts, which makes Alice wriggle against her chest.
“I don’t cook. Never have, never will. It horrifies my mother, who sends five pounds of frozen homemade empanadas every month packed with dry ice.”
Shawn groans and lets his head loll back. “Fuck, I love your mom’s empanadas.”
A moment later, his head snaps up. His eyes widen. He claps a hand over his mouth.
“I’m so sorry!” The sound is garbled against the skin of his hand. He removes it to Val’s amusement.
“Don’t worry,” Val hums, pressing her nose and lips up against Alice’s patch of dark hair above her little ear, “I swear around her all the fucking time. Don’t I, nina?”
Shawn grins and turns back to the fridge. With a sigh, he unloads a carton of old Waitrose eggs, some wilted spinach and a bag of shiitake mushrooms. He snuggles the ingredients into his arms and nudges the door shut with his foot, glancing at her reproachfully.
“Don’t judge me on this, it won’t be my best work. But I have limited resources.”
Val takes a deep, calming breath, watching him start to sort out a cutting board and a pathetically dull knife at her kitchen counter. Because Shawn Mendes is cooking her dinner.
It’s been a weird six hours.
Val props herself up on a stool, planting Alice in front of her, holding her by the waist so her floppy, energetic baby doesn’t squirm onto the floor. Alice also serves as an excellent shield between herself and the man in her kitchen she can’t stop staring at.
She listens to him chop and crack eggs and melt butter like making dinner for her is some kind of Food Network challenge. She tries to tamp down a goofy smile at the thought. Alice smacks her tiny palm against Val’s lips for her attention. She holds her daughter’s hand and mimes nibbling at her fingers, making Alice squeal with laughter. Val peeks over Alice’s shoulder to see Shawn grinning at a frying pan, expertly flipping an omelette. Val’s stomach flips with it.
“So,” Val coughs, “How’ve you found London so far?”
Shawn slides the omelette sizzling onto a plate and cracks pepper over the top. He slides it over to her with a fork, slinging a dish towel over his shoulder while he gets to work on the second. Val mouths thank you, sealing it with a wink as she lifts the baby into a high chair and pops open a can of mashed carrot and swede from the countertop.
“I love it,” Shawn murmurs, nodding, “I’ve always really liked it here. My mum has family here. I’m over here a lot for work.”
He slides his tongue over his lower lip, making the black enameled ring quiver as he thinks about the comment he left out -- he’s long been considering getting a place here. Many of his favorite producers are based out of London. He and the guys love working out here. Forefront has remained more popular in the UK after the scene faded in the US. It makes sense.
“And… how long are you staying?”
Val hopes the eagerness doesn’t cut too deeply into her voice. If Shawn notices, he’s mercifully cool about it.
“I’m leaving Thursday to go home for the holidays.”
Val’s jaw tightens. She straightens up and stares at Alice, watching as she takes a fist of Val’s hair and shoves it into her mouth instead of the spoon of food Val is offering.
“I’ll be back after New Years to write the new album. Gonna spend a few months here.”
Val’s stomach swoops. She jams the spoon into Alice’s cheek by accident, reaching for her bib to wipe the food away before Alice can protest.
“That’s nice,” Val replies airily.
Shawn plops into the stool next to her with his plate and eyes her as she takes one bite of her food and feeds her daughter with her other hand.
“Ever accidentally mixed up the spoons and eaten baby food by mistake?”
Val barks a laugh. “Happens like, once a week.”
Shawn, Val and Alice eat in comfortable silence. Shawn chews a little slower than usual because he knows he’s probably getting kicked out after dinner and he’s not really ready to let go of this just yet.
This.
What is this?
Shawn shakes the thought before it can sprout in his brain. He’s not going to freak out over this. This is fine. It’s dinner with an old friend and her baby. Nothing weird can happen with a baby around, right?
Val stands and scoops a squirming Alice out of her high chair, walking toward the nursery with a glance over her shoulder.
“I’m gonna get her changed and put her down for the night. Want to open that bottle of wine there?” She nods at a bottle of cabernet and Shawn’s eyes get a little brighter.
“Yeah,” he responds enthusiastically, nodding, “Good night, Alice!”
Val beams and flaps Alice’s little hand at him. “Night night, Shawn!”
When Val emerges twenty minutes later with the baby monitor, Shawn has the dishes cleaned and the wine breathing with two glasses out on the counter while he flips absently through his phone.
“I’m gonna get changed, too,” Val says softly, gesturing down at her leather pants and chewing on the inside of her lip, trying not to read too much into all the different cozy-cute outfit ideas in her head.
Before she can overthink it, she swaps out her urban mom chic look for clingy charcoal leggings and a black camisole with her favorite cable knit cardigan over top. She gives her hair a flip in the mirror and pinches some color into her cheeks.
You know, just because.
When she walks back into the living room, Shawn has the wine poured. She tips her glass against his and murmurs “cheers,” willfully ignoring the way Shawn is trying not to check her out.
They sit at the bar. Shawn watches Val cross her long, slender legs, her bare, black-lacquered toes glinting up at him. He hums a chuckle and sips his wine.
“What?” she giggles.
He nods at her. “You. Your black nail polish. Some things never change, I guess.”
The words feel heavy as soon as they leave him. It swirls around them, all that has changed, all that hasn’t.
It would be easy to look over at Val now and see a stranger. It’s been a full decade. The amount of life experience packed into the ten years between 22 and 32 could have made her an entirely different person. But Shawn’s been watching her, listening to her all day. She’s still Val.
It’s a comfort and a curse, he thinks. It’s not like he hasn’t wondered about her, about how much the years have changed all the things that drew him in. It hurt to think she was changing and he didn’t even know it, couldn’t see it. And now he knows just how… Val she still is.
This night won’t last forever, even if they did just open a nice bottle of wine. He’ll go back to the hotel, he’ll leave London. He’ll be stuck with knowing the woman he loved is still every bit as incredible as he remembers her. Hell, she got better. He can’t believe it, but Val Moreno got better with time.
He shakes his head and pushes a hand through his hair. “Wow,” he mutters.
Val takes a gulp from her glass and nods. “I’m kind of feeling that, too.”
“It’s just…” Shawn hisses, finally cracking with the help of the fine cabernet, “It’s been… ten fucking years.”
Val looks over at him. She’s silent for a few long, slow seconds.
“So tell me about them.”
Shawn looks at her as she stands and reaches for the bottle and her glass, heading for the couch.
“Didn’t we do that all afternoon?” he laughs, standing and ambling after her.
Hey moron, he thinks to himself, Do you really want to give her a reason to make you leave sooner than you have to?
To his relief, Val persists, swinging her legs up to fold beside her and patting the cushions. He settles in and continues sipping from his glass for courage.
“Well,” she starts, looking a bit uncertain as she gazes into her glass, “If your ten years has been anything like mine, you have a list of things you’ve been wanting to tell me, saving up for if we’d ever see each other again.”
Shawn’s fucking fingers tingle. She’s been making a list. For him.
He nods. “Y-yeah. I mean… yeah.”
Val smiles. It’s soft and encouraging. “Ok. I’ll start.”
Shawn’s heart softens its battering ram motion in his chest. He bobs his head.
“I was… so scared when I got pregnant with Alice. God, it was the most frightened I’ve ever been of anything. More scared than when I told Raf I was leaving Streets, even more scared than when I was pregnant with Rafael. Because I felt so ready this time. If she was taken from me… god, I swear to god, I held my breath the entire nine months with her. Even after she was born, I just stared at her. Like if I blinked, that would be it. She’d be gone. I think it’s only in the last six months that I’ve started to fucking relax.”
Shawn’s body surges with affection and protective instincts he barely recognizes. He nods eagerly.
“I think it’s amazing you decided to do it on your own. I mean, I bet you hear that all the time. But…”
“But you know better than most how much of a risk I felt I was taking,” she says softly, leveling him with her gaze.
Shawn is quiet remembering the night she finally released it into him, a flood of words he was too young to hear, to feel, to accept. It was the night they said ‘I love you.’ It was the night he ran.
“Your turn,” Val whispers, refilling their glasses. Shawn drinks eagerly.
“Uhm… I… fuck. The closest I ever came to calling you was six years ago, after Making Midnight. I felt like shit. I think I knew all along it wasn’t right -- none of it. It wasn’t me, it wasn’t us. It was a bad album. I had no business being as pissed as I was that it sucked and everyone hated it. But I was so angry with myself. I just felt powerless. It took me so long to be ok with speaking up and saying when I thought something was wrong. It took me so long to find a way to be a leader. I think that’s the way I’ve changed the most in the last ten years.”
Val watches him thoughtfully. She takes a short sip and shakes her head.
“Maybe that’s one of the ways. I’m not sure it’s the biggest. I think 19-year-old you wouldn’t have lasted through a walk in the park with me and my kid. 29-year-old you held her for over an hour. I think you fell a little bit in love with her.”
She chuckles but she’s not joking. Shawn goes crimson.
“She’s… god, Val, she’s amazing. You’re so lucky. You… you both are.”
Val’s eyes drift shut. She drains her second glass. When she opens her eyes again, Shawn’s warm honeyed eyes are watching her. He doesn’t look scared. He doesn’t look anxious. He looks a little lonely.
Val fills their glasses again. She’s warm enough now to slip out of her cardigan and leave it beside her on the sofa. She watches Shawn watch her toss her hair over her shoulders. He chews on his lip until it’s red and swollen.
“Say it.”
He looks up from his already half empty third glass. He blinks quickly. “What?”
“Say it, whatever it is.”
Her voice is calm and smooth. He swallows.
“I was just… wondering if you’ve been in love in the last ten years.”
Val’s head tilts. “Honestly? I didn’t really try. I didn’t want to be. I just wanted Alice. Even before I was ready for her, though, I wasn’t all that interested in looking around. I guess I figured it would fall into my lap when it was right.”
“Why didn’t you look?” Shawn asks, a little too quickly.
Val notices. She takes a slow, deep breath. Shawn watches it inflate and deflate her chest as his tightens. With a resigned smile, Val reaches out and cups his cheek. Her whole body is warm, humming with alcohol in her veins. Her fingers have him choking down a gasp.
“Do you know what I think is really the most incredible part?” she breathes. He blinks at her again, dumbstruck.
“We were together less than three months. It was Warped Tour. We were… fuck, we were kids. I never expected that I’d be hung up on it after all this time. That years later, I’d be on dates and thinking of you. That I’d be sleeping with other people and still thinking of you. I thought this is something that would fade. When I saw you in the garden today, it felt exactly the same as waking up next to you in my bunk on that stupid tour bus, like it was 2007 all over again.”
Shawn’s eyes have fallen shut. He’s overwhelmed, breathing heavily. He turns his face to nudge his lips against her thumb, leaving a gentle kiss.
“God, I still write songs about you. Like, all the time. I thought I was crazy. Maybe I am. I don’t know. Maybe we both are.”
Val waits a beat, then drags his lips to hers. Her kiss is firm but sweet. Her face softens as soon as his mouth touches hers. His fingers curls into the ends of her hair as he edges closer, carefully, dropping himself headfirst into the kiss because who knows if he’ll get another.
They break apart, panting for air. Val plants her hands on his shoulders and wastes no time hauling herself into his lap.
Shawn whimpers, gasping into her mouth. She feels… perfect. Fuck, he’s on fire. It’s been so long. Her tongue slips against his, she groans into his mouth. Her arms are slung around his neck so all he can see and hear and feel is her. How did he go without this for so long? How did he let her go? How could he leave?
But he knows why he left. He left because he was a kid. It took every ounce of strength and maturity he had to walk away when he let himself realize it. He left for him.
Shawn inhales deeply and scoops his hands around her cheeks, easing her back gently. Val’s eyes are heavy. She’s panting.
“Wait… wait,” he grunts, shaking his head as he breathes heavily, in synch with her, “It can’t be like this this time.”
Val feels his words snapping into place in her head. She looks down at the baby monitor she dropped next to her sweater. She lets her head fall forward as she laughs breathlessly.
“Ok. Add that to the list of things you wouldn’t have done ten years ago.”
Shawn grins and tugs her forward until her head rests against his shoulder and his arms drape around her back.
“You deserve so much better than what I gave you last time,” he says softly. It’s not pained or self-deprecating, it’s simple and honest. “I want it to be real.”
She turns her lips against his neck and sighs. The same scurry of goosebumps she remembers she always left on him marches across his skin.
“Then let’s talk about it in the morning,” Val murmurs. Carefully, she unfolds her body from his, takes his hand, and leads the way to her bedroom.

Black Sun Tale | A Mother
honestly i feel like i don’t appreciate this chapter enough, but this is where the storm dies down a lil
remember that this is a first draft with only minor edits and enjoy! comments and reception are heavily appreciated
-
Leaves being damp didn’t help when Oliver tried breaking those in his path.
The scent of those around him weakened as he paced his way back home. The day started to dim with the sunset. The rays hitting against the tall buildings once the rain clouds began to disappear.
Oliver bit his healed lip, gnawing at it with his own frustration.
Ayu’s final reaction would happen sooner or later. And the ideas of what could come made Oliver’s head spin. His attempts to draw attention elsewhere were futile.
“It’s not like they’ll kill me, right?” He questioned himself under his breath. Yeah, yeah, no kid would do that to a human-like thing.
The future was unsettled for Oliver then. It twisted up more than he expected in the matter of a single two hours.
He groaned. I’m gonna have to get close with him now, don’t I? He face-palmed himself. “I didn’t even realize that he’s actually almost in the exact same boat as me… Fuck… Fuck.”
He eyed down to his bloody hands. The scent wasn’t all as strong as before, started drying out and got messed up by dirt already. However, it was still enough for him to take a small lick.
His memories of when he became unconscious grew on him as he cleaned off some of his mess –he figured whatever magic there was would keep him covered-. Though, after reading through the foggy visions, he only took a breath.
“I’m gonna have more things to deal with.”
***
“… Just what was that?”
Oliver threw a ball up and down from one hand as a replacement of destroying his apartment furniture. On his other hand was a squeezed-up stress ball.
He dabbled around Ayu’s initial reaction, studying what he could from memory. Overall, the black-haired boy was reasonable. Though Oliver admitted to himself that if it weren’t for Ayu chasing after him, he would’ve cut ties immediately after running.
However, one image stuck with him. Despite it being so recent, the memory was disappearing as he tried deciphering. Perhaps it was because he was in such a shock, but Oliver doubted that idea. If fear could make his recollection worse, he wouldn’t have remembered anything from his first ever meal.
The vision itself wasn’t so terrible, simply questionable in Oliver’s eyes. Ayu’s appearance has always been strange to him, from his nimble structure to his dry skin and alien eyes. However, it was a first to see both of his eyes glow a vibrant vermillion.
Oliver clenched on the ball he threw. “He’s never mentioned that before to me, hasn’t he?” Then again, there isn’t much I know about him either.
“How’re you doing after all that?”
Oliver cocked his head to the corner of the living room, finding Vittorino standing right then and there. “You saw all of it, didn’t you?”
Vittorino nodded with a grin. “You panic way too much.”
Oliver’s eyes narrowed, dumbfounded from his comment. “…Really?”
“It was entertaining to watch at least,” he shrugged.
Oliver took a moment to process just how ignorant Vittorino really was. He only scoffed at the end, “You’re more of an ass than I expected.”
After Vittorino’s short chuckling, Oliver remembered he needed something of confirmation. “This is probably obvious,” he started, “but before that, you already knew, right?”
“Of course, I did,” Vittorino rose a hand. “Almost every- I already knew for a while.”
Every- body? The slip-up was there but Oliver pushed it aside. “Did Faustus know too, then?”
“What makes you think that?” Oliver noted Vittorino’s eyes drifted off at the question.
“He left right before my seventh birthday, it’s been leaving me suspicious for four years. Anybody would.”
Vittorino didn’t reply immediately. Oliver waited but only for a satisfying answer.
“Well, I’m not exactly allowed to say.”
What the hell. “But why? Why would he leave before all of it?” He squeezed up the stress ball with all he had. “Why is this even happening in the first place? Why- … Who’s Alice?”
“Oh,” Vittorino leaned towards the wall behind him, “So you’ve met her already.”
“Who is she?”
“First off, what did she tell you?”
“She-.” He won’t answer until I do first. He sighed, “She was crying, hugged me out of nowhere and just kept saying she was sorry, for ‘all of this’. I asked and she just told me she was my mom… It didn’t make any sense so I kept asking. But I woke up before she could answer.”
“Ah, well she tried as much as she could for the time being.” Vittorino moved over to a seat.
Oliver’s brows furrowed. “Of course, you know her…”
Vittorino shrugged, “She’s high up in reputation, and second in charge. I always saw her as depressing though, boring for the most part.” He leaned over his chair, keeping his elbows on his knees.
“But what does she mean that she’s my mom?”
“Simple enough,” he answered, “she’s your mother.”
Oliver took a gulp, doubt ridden in his head.
Vittorino added, “I hadn’t heard much about what went down. That was like, what, three centuries ago?”
“Three centuries ago?”
“Oh yeah- we never mentioned that,” he blinked. “I’m older than you’d expect, Oliver.”
“Just how old?” Oliver asked in disbelief.
Vittorino hummed, “About three centuries, yeah. Alice’s about four-hundred more or less but that doesn’t really matter right now.”
“But… how-”
“Alice is your mother, that’s a fact.” He crossed his arms, resting his back upon the chair cushions. “From what I can tell, you’ll have to figure the rest out by yourself.”
Oliver groaned. He threw both of the balls he held across the room, making loud thuds. “That’s helpful, isn’t it?”
He dragged his steps back to his room. His exhaustion didn’t come from his lack of a meal for once. Instead, pure stress and vex loomed over him as he prayed for a day where he could just clear his mind.
He passed through the narrow hallway between each room. Above his head laid arrays of framed photos staggering from throughout his life. He dawned upon them, each carried photos of him and his mother together. They all held bright smiles from both of them. His face went blank once the newer pictures came around. His eyes were dull and tired in each one, while his mother stayed the same as ever.
She was the only mother he knew, even if they weren’t related by blood. Oliver himself had no recollection of an original family or parent, no real father to teach him how to be a man, or whatever they showed on television. Though, someone like Alice wouldn’t be his guess on who his birth mother would be.
Her peachy skin and neat, blonde hair was nothing near his light brown and burgundy. Nothing of her was similar aside from her speckles of freckles. She was just an average white woman. If she were his mother than everything should have come from his father, but then the question would be about where he was.
Oliver gave up thinking about it all, taking a sigh and leaving the photos to shine like always. He entered back to his own room, walking and leaning over to the corner of his nightstand’s legs. Grabbing and setting up his ukulele, he plucked tabs and rhythms in silence.
Vittorino appeared again in short time. He sat on the ground along with Oliver beside the bookshelf. However, he didn’t say a word, only watched from afar. Oliver took no mind of it, focusing solely on the music he played.
His breathing calmed down as the chill melodies rung throughout the room. He mumbled the lyrics of the song he played, they didn’t matter much to him at the moment, he only wanted the rhythm.
Music was the only thing that could clear his mind almost completely, yet something he detached from through the years. It was something his mother raised him with, playing songs for him when he wasn’t thinking so much. He grew up only a year after she gave him his own uke to play with.
He continued to play with whatever he came up with, only for Vittorino to interrupt by asking, “Do you know any hymns?”
“Hymns?” Oliver stopped playing. He raised a brow by the question. “I don’t know any. Caeli Desuper is bound to be easy… but why hymns?”
Vittorino rolled his eyes over. “I remember learning lots of ‘em as a kid. Forgot most of them though. Barely remembered Caeli existing…” He shrugged it off quickly, “So, how’re you feeling now?”
Oliver eyed him at the suddenness of the topic, though didn’t ask. “Eh, still wondering about stuff. ‘Least things are going somewhere for once.”
“That’s good then.” Vittorino sat up from his slouched state. He grabbed a book from behind him, opening it up and staring at a middle section of a fairy-tale book. He only muttered after seconds of not moving, “I forgot I can’t read in this language.”
They both sat, Oliver playing on his ukulele again and Vittorino sitting around. The quiet relaxed Oliver’s body for once. He was replenished with barely any pain, no headache with the music, and no Vittorino annoying him at every waking second. However, there was one more thing he had to question before any resolve for the day. “Hey Vittorino,”
“Yeah?” He looked up from looking at a picture book.
“Do you know why Faustus gave me a switchblade in the first place?”
Vittorino’s face softened, to Oliver’s surprise. “He knew you would want it for the future, I believe.”
Oliver bit his lip. He then crawled over to his ukulele case, opening the small pocket inside and grabbed the blade. He stared at it in his hands. The handle was carved with a beautiful silver, showing patterns of roses and other items he couldn’t tell as easily.
He fisted the switchblade handle in his hand. “I want to see him again, just so I could know what the hell he was doing.”
With no words, he put the switchblade back in place. “… Ayu’s gonna ask about my mark again, isn’t he?”
“Maybe, maybe not,” Vittorino suggested. “Depends on how he thinks the privacy is.”
Oliver listened to Vittorino in the back of his head, spacing out with ideas swirling. He pulled down his left sleeve barely. What encased was a sliver of a black sun mark like beforehand. He refused to pull the sleeve down more, shameful of what was underneath.
The idea of blood was already craving his mind.
“… It was a mistake for Faustus to give me that thing.”

Time Never Stops
Chapter One: Always Interrupting
Word Count: 1763
Prologue
Warnings: Language, fluff
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Present Day]
I enter my newly furnished recording studio with a water bottle in one hand and a plate with a sandwich on it in the other. I set the plate down and reach under my desk to start my computer for today's events. While I wait, I spin around in my swivel chair and look at the room. The black and green padding on the walls were set in a diagonal pattern, and a white board with this weeks schedule placed in between some of the padding. Two bookshelves sit nestled against the back wall on either side of the door; the shelves are covered in merch, fan gifts, and several pictures of friends and me. Most of the pictures had been of Tom and I throughout the years, my favorite of the bunch sitting beside my monitor on my desk. His arm is around my waist while he stands behind me, donning a pair of black swim trunks, smiling into the side of my face as I laugh in a black and white checkered bikini. We are standing in the ocean, vacationing in Hilton Head, South Carolina, when we were seventeen.
Tom Holland, my best friend for as long as I can remember, and long time crush. Gotta love that the one person that knows you the best, happens to be the one that you fall for so easily. I didn't know if it was his sunshine smile, the infectious laugh, or the fact that he knows me better than I know myself; but, he is the one person I wish nothing more to have at my side for the rest of my life. However, it isn't that simple. With him being busy with his acting career and me being busy with YouTube, we hadn't had much time to spend together, not that it would have changed anything. Tom is my best friend, and that was that. I just have to be happy that he is still in my life after all these years, and hadn't lost contact while we went from immature teens to slightly more mature adults.
I smiled when my computer finally loads. I log on and set up my software before I clap my hands together, testing the frequency of the mic. I set up the game, placing my headphones over my beanie covered hair, and check to make sure that everything is running smoothly before I click record on the second monitor. I smile at the camera and begin my intro, "What's up, guys? You're on with Timelock! And today, as you can already tell, we are playing Detroit: Become Human. I have been beyond excited to play this game for the past three weeks, but of course since I was away in the UK visiting with Dan and Phil doing some fun videos and joining Sean, aka Jacksepticeye, and Mark, aka Markiplier, for a charity livestream kept me from starting the game. Which reminds me, I cannot believe how well we did on the livestream and I wanted to thank everyone who watched and participated with us across all platforms. You guys are amazing. Now going back to the game, Sean said that it is worth the wait, so without anymore interruptions, I hope, let's get started!"
~
"Holy shit, so that's what happened to Kara." I breathe as I move the character from Alice's room down to the first floor. I glance up at the next activity for the character, "See Todd for further instructions." I let out a gasp as I watch the scene unfold in front of me, watching as Todd yells at his daughter and frighten her. "Shit, I thought that was going to end badly, I mean, it could have. This game is already super interesting, now I know why everyone has been talking this game up! But, guys, the clock is ticking! Thank you so much for watching, and if you enjoyed the video, don't forget to give that like button a little bit of love. And I will see you, in the next one! Time-" I jump as my phone begins to blare the old Spider-Man theme song from inside my desk. I glance at the drawer and pull it out to see a picture of Tom sticking his middle finger up his nose, his name place directly over his face. I roll my eyes and look back at the camera. "I said there would be no interruptions, I stand corrected." I answer the phone, "Hold up thirty seconds, I'm saying my outro."
Tom's laugh echoes through the receiver, "Okay, okay."
"Let's try this again. Time resume." I point at the screen for a few seconds before I end the recording and place my phone back against my ear. "You really have impeccable timing. What is this, the sixth time in the past two weeks?"
"Sorry, love, figured you would be done by now." He chuckled, "And I miss you."
"I miss you too, Thomas." I smile, grabbing my camera so I can begin uploading the recording to my editing software. "How's filming?"
"Good, good," he pauses, shifting in the background. "We actually finished yesterday and are going to be heading out to start promoting the movie, then I am off to start filming for the newest Avengers movie."
"Ooh," I enthuse, plugging in my camera and shifting to save and close out of the game, "That sounds amazing, Tom." I sigh, happy to hear that he was doing well after long months of filming, advertising, repeating. "But it also sounds exhausting."
"Honestly, it is," he sighs. "How was London and Brighton? My mum said you visited and Harrison was sending me snapchats of you at the flat."
"It was really nice. Actually, Harrison decided, even though I discussed it with him a month previous, that he did not want to let me stay. However, Tessa pushed past him into the hallway when she heard me." I pause my rant as I hear Tom laugh at the statement, "It was an entertaining two weeks in London, and I spend two days with your mum, dad, and brothers. It was nice spending time with them and not having to worry about working." I say, watching the video finally load up into the editing software. "And Brighton was amazing. When you're home, and I can find time to fly out, we have to go and spend a week out there. Its beautiful."
"Sounds like a plan, bug." He sighs.
"I do have to edit, do you wanna Skype so we can continue the conversation?"
"Yeah, I'd love that," he whispered. I quickly pulled up my Skype, after a few minutes, his face popped up into my screen.
"Hey! Its my favorite boy!" I yell, throwing my hands over my head. I watched as Tom's smile fades as he looks behind me with knitted eyebrows. "Hey, what's wrong?"
"That's not your normal studio, is it?" He asked, sounding concerned.
"Oh, I thought I told you the good news?" I said rolling backwards so that I was in the middle of my recording studio, "I got the apartment!" I looked at him in excitement, but I noticed he wasn't smiling. "What's wrong? I thought you would be happy."
"I- I am, I just," he runs his hand through his hair, "God, I've missed so much by being gone all the time."
"Tom..." I murmur, "Hey, it's okay. What you're doing is just as important-"
"But, it's your first flat," he whispers, "I was going to come and help you unpack, make sure that your first night wasn't spent alone," he pouts at me, but I can see the small smile on his lips at the promise he made me years ago.
"I didn't spend it alone! I made a girls night out of it! I had Izzy, Haley, and Mia spend the night with me and it was a lot of fun. I know you wanted it to be you, but when you get done with everything I can show you the place." Tom sighs and places his head on his fist. "I know what'll make you feel better, how about I promise next time you are here we marathon all the Marvel movies."
"All the movies?" he teases, his frown disappearing. I nod and he smiles back, "That sounds awesome." He laughs.
I roll back up to my desk to start editing while Tom tells me about some of the more entertaining things that have happened the last few weeks. Another Skype message pops up from JacKyleGameplays, interrupting his rambling. Hey, TL. We and the girls are going to play some prop hunt, wanna join? ~Jac
"What was that?" Tom asks, tilting his head to the side.
"GameSquad wants to play prophunt," I state, getting ready to tell them that I had some things to finish and wouldn't be able to get on today.
"I'll let you go then-"
"No, it's okay, I can stay on." I tell him, looking back at the camera, "We always get interrupted, I can play prophunt any other time. I almost never see you anymore."
"You sure? I don't mind, I can just call later." Even though he says it's fine, I can see in his eyes he really doesn't want me to hang up.
"Nope, I want to talk to you, I can always talk to the GameSquad." I finish sending the message and mute the rest of my chats, "There, no interruptions this time."
"Is it because I am Mr. Always Interrupting?"
"Damn straight," I say giggling, "Now, who out of all the people you have played as is your favorite character? And you can't pick Spider-Man."
"But, I am Spider-Man!"
"No, you are Thomas Stanley Holland!" I shout playfully, making him laugh, "My best friend since two years old, my tiny-toddling husband, knight in shining armor, and the one person that knows me better than I know myself."
He immediately begins to laugh harder, "My Mum sent me that video of us "getting married" last week."
"I asked if she would since we found it. I was hoping it would make you smile."
"It did, my little lovely wife." He sighs, "and my favorite character? Definitely your best friend, because that's the one I get to play for the rest of my life."
A blush creeps up my neck as I look away from the screen, "That's cheesy, and you're only saying it because I said it first!"
"But being your best friend is my favorite thing, you know me more than I know myself."
"I should, I've known you my whole life" I whisper.
"And I wouldn't have it any other way," he says with a dopey smile. "Now, what were you recording before I so rudely interrupted?"
Note: If you enjoyed Class of 1984 you may also be interested in the thematic sequel Class of 1999 by the same prime movers, which is much more overtly comedic, and Unman, Wittering and Zigo (1971) a very British spin on the same themes starring David Hemmings.
Also: I took the images from the Internet like the anarchist hell child that I am. No rules! no future! Rip the system!
I remember reading about Class of 1984 when it came out and thinking the review in Starburst made it sound like an incredibly exploitative and deeply unpleasant movie. Being 12 I immediately made a mental note to see it as soon as possible. Unfortunately the movie wasn’t passed uncut in the UK until 2005, by which time I was no longer 12 and thus somewhat preoccupied by the labyrinth of idiocy which is adult life. But that mental note still niggled, and so in 2019 that 12 year old’s simple ambition was belatedly fulfilled thanks to the UK blu-ray release of the movie. Turns out that not only is Class of 1984 incredibly exploitative and deeply unpleasant, but also (spoiler) my taste hasn’t evolved much since I was 12, because, me? I thought it was a hoot. A hoot and a half in fact.
Class of 1984 asks the old, old question Hollywood loves to ask - how far do you have to push a liberal milquetoast until he starts biting folk’s throats out? Because, as any decent hard working common sense fella with dirt under his fingernails will tell ya, it’s okay to have high-falutin’ ideas about equality and decency and edjumacation but, let’s face facts, when their wife’s blood soaks their corduroy jacket these liberal schmucks won’t hesitate to dip their fists in the basin of other people’s faces. It’s a small-minded, nasty genre that takes unseemly delight in demonstrating that the self-appointed avatars of civilisation have feet of clay. But it isn’t a stupid genre; it also recognises the fact that being a pigeon chested liberal weakling takes some doing against very stiff resistance. Basically, the genre exploits the fact that small-mindedness and mean-spiritedness are universal levellers. To err may very well be human, but to wish for violent revenge is, well, very human. Class of 1984 is one of the smartest of this, uh, cathartic genre; it is simultaneously a Push The Liberal Until He Snaps Movie and an Impotent White Male Liberal Revenge Fantasy movie. Everyone wins. Except women; it was made in 1982 so women get short shrift; being (mainly) either whores or wives to be sacrificed on the altar of manliness. If you are a regular reader of comics I should probably point out that this is not representative of women’s roles in the real world.
But then Class of 1984 is not set in the real world. For a start it was made in 1982 so it is set in the (then) near-future. “We are the future!” is the regular mocking refrain of the violent urchins, and also of the typically ridiculous Alice Cooper title song, which exists only to remind you just how seriously you should take any of this. (Not very.) This is the near future of every frothing right wingers most secretive wet dreams. The inner city schools are crumbling concrete nests of perversion and lawlessness. Kids carry knives and deal drugs while the feeble faculty fall apart, turn to drink, or turn a blind eye. Feral monsters in torn clothes roam the halls; rulers of the fallen kingdom of academia. This is where weak-kneed liberalism, left-wing learning and the kind word in place of the hard fist get you: a violent hellish maelstrom only the force of a quiet white man pushed too damn far can tame. Yes, Class of 1984 is the kind of movie that makes rightwingers spaff so hard and so often that by the time the credits roll only dust is puffing out. But by the time the put upon teacher is putting the buzzsaw to bloody good use in the woodwork room, effete liberal cheesecakes will also be readjusting their tortoiseshell glasses and getting sweaty under their white collars. Something for everyone, like I said.
There’s little point unfolding the plot of Class of 1984 since it’s familiar stuff, but it is very well done stuff. It certainly delivers the expected multiple frissons as Andrew Norris (Perry King) finds every humane alternative barred to him as he is remorselessly forced down the rat run built from liberal society’s failure to face his inner beast. And there is a lovely build to the finale; in which the hopes and dreams of the normal students, in the form of a concert, is contrasted with the ultra-violent theatre of vengeance unfolding in the corridors beyond. For a movie aimed squarely at the amygdala Class of 1984 is surprisingly wittily and smartly written. it is also surprisingly wittily and smartly acted. Perry King is ridiculously chiselled of chin, but elicits much sympathy as his flailing increases, and you feel a sense of both triumph and loss as he finally grasps the nettle of his inner ferocity. Merrie Lynn Ross has little do as the sacrificial wife, Diane, but she effectively provides the foil of the sheltered person who doesn’t understand how bad things are in the real world. Unfortunately, in a very, very, (very) tough to watch scene, the bad things finally become impossible for her to ignore. The actual class are pretty great too. Really horrible, each and every one of the scrofulous, disrespectful little shits. Special mention, though, for Timothy Van Patten as the sociopathic ringleader, Peter Stegman. A truly nasty piece of work who plays the system and his single mother with even more finesse than the piano he unexpectedly excels at.
(The kids’ convincingly unhinged viciousness is vital since you are supposed to cheer as they fall before the force they have unleashed, a force more dangerous than nuclear fire; the angry white man pushed too far. And you will holler as they drop, because the young cast have done their awful work well. Mind you, you are only able to applaud their painful demises since they all look to be in their mid-20s. Had they actually looked like the teenagers they represent the whole thing would have been too unpleasant for anybody, well, anybody not in the NRA. Movies like this can’t get too near the knuckle; it’s part of the unspoken arrangement with the audience.)
But, unpopular news as it may be, not all the kids are shits. Future star Michael J. Fox plays the thankless role of Arthur, The Good Student, complete with puppy fat. Together with Erin Flannery’s Deneen he represents the kids who get left behind but just might make it. Bit of optimism there, snuck in amongst the eruptions of violence. But… Roddy McDowall! Dear, sweet, Roddy McDowall is a revelation. His slightly theatrical aspect is just spot on for Terry Corrigan, the teacher ground down to a desperate, alcoholic wreck, who cracks in a different way to Norris. His heart-breaking descent, together with Fox and Flannery’s kids are the secret heart of the movie. Class of 1984 flirts hot and heavy with nihilism, but is brave enough to finally put out for humanity. All the sturm und drang pandering to the basest emotions is camouflage for a small sliver of optimism. Which isn’t half bad for what’s basically Straw Dogs (1971) set in a 1980s American inner city high school. But, Christ, that Roddy McDowall. Respect is due, sir. As if kids today even know what respect is. The little shits.
I wanted to tell you that I am loving We Make Our Own Fate! Any idea when you might have an update? I don't mean to put any pressure on you. I just really need to know what happens next!
Thank you, Nonny!
No worries. I don’t find your needs pressuring at all, lol! I’m thrilled you are enjoying the story.
I wish I could give you a specific time frame, but the truth is I only just started on the next chapter. I took some time off while visiting the UK and attending Enchanted and have had other projects elbowing their way to the front of the writing queue, but I’m back in the wmoof zone so hopefully it won’t be too much longer.
Would you like a very small (unbeta’d) snippet to hold you over??
Alice nodded at them both before turning and heading off towards the dining hall, pausing briefly to say something to Margot as she passed. Killian knelt there in awe of seeing his daughter scamper about in the sunlight. Her usually weak limbs were steady and strong, the pallor of her skin had been exchanged for a healthy vibrancy that shown from her face and twinkled in her Jones blue eyes. Killian pressed his fist against his lips and his head fell forward. The pressure in his chest increased to a welcomed ache as hot tears of rejoicing streamed down his face.
Emma’s hand rested on his shoulder and he felt her crouch down next to him. “Come on,” she breathed in his ear while tucking an arm around him. “Let’s get you up and back inside.”
