"there are a few ways to say 'thank you' in japanese," your boyfriend explains.

this is your third japanese lesson. a few days ago, you had asked euijoo to teach you japanese, so he's been giving you a lesson a day. now, you both sit on the couch, him teaching you and you taking notes.

"the difference in each phrase is how polite they are." he adjusts his glasses on his nose, and you look away from him and at your notes to focus on the lesson rather than his face. "for example, you would say 'arigato' to a friend or someone your age. however, to someone you don't know well or an elder, you should say 'arigato gozaimasu.' did you get that in your notes?"

you remain spaced out, staring at his features for a moment before shaking yourself out of it and nodding. "yeah, i got it."

he grins at you. "it feels like you're paying more attention to me than the words I'm saying."

you smile. "you're very distracting."

he chuckles. "just try to pay attention baby."

you think for a moment. "why not give me some motivation?"

he stares at you, puzzled. "what do you mean?"

"hmm... how about for every question i get right, you give me a kiss? like an incentive."

he chuckles. "you sly fox. you just wanna kiss me." you nod, giggling. he ruffles your hair, continuing on with the lesson.

he launches into the other ways to say "thank you," such as past and present. you remain attentive and continue taking notes. when it comes time for him to quiz you on what you've learned, you are able to answer correctly by looking at your notes. that earns you a few kisses, to your enjoyment.

"you're doing so good, baby," he exclaims, proud. "now, let's try without your notes. let's say your grandmother does something kind for you. how would you thank her?"

"uhh- arigato~?"

"not quite," he says, rubbing your hand he's been holding through the lesson. "that's how you would thank someone your age. to be polite to an elder, you would say 'arigato gozaimasu.'"

"arigato gozaimase," you repeat after him.

"good. the 'z' is more of a soft 's' sound," he explains.

you slump in your chair. "japanese is so hard!"

he smiles at you. "it'll get easier the more you practice. do you want to stop for now and pick up more in a bit?"

Konbanwa, fledgling student here. I'm still trying to memorize all the kana so that I can start trying to learn the phonetic pronunciation of Japanese words and phrases before moving toward studying individual kanji and grammar. Is there anything you would recommend, in terms of resources or study habits to aid in memorizing all the hiragana and katakana? Or any resources that you use for your students?

Hello! Since you're still in the very early stages of learning I don't believe I have any special tricks or strategies to learn hiragana / katakana. Really the key to adult learning is just repetition. Vocalize and rewrite them daily. Probably break it up in to sets of 25 kana at a time so you don't feel burned out so early. If you get bored writing letters, pick short common words like Ohayou or inu, write it in hiragana and write it in romaji underneath to help you remember how the letters sound while keeping it less boring to memorize.

First Impression: If the Villainess and Villain Met and Fell in Love

If the Villainess and Villain Met and Fell in Love is about Brigitte Meidell, the daughter of an earl and a member of the Fire Clan. After contracting with a “no-name” spirit as child, she was dubbed as "the failure of the Meidell family". Not only has her reputation followed her all the way to the Otoleanna Academy of Magic, but she has also been unceremoniously dumped by her fiancé, Prince Joseph, in front of all her classmates.

As the so-called “villainess” is picking up the pieces, she meets the school’s “villain”, Yuri Aurealis, the arrogant and extremely blunt heir to the Water Clan. But instead of falling in love with each other, they start a competition of wits to see who is the academy’s best student. Will their rivalry turn into something more?

I quite enjoyed the first volume of If the Villainess and Villain Met and Fell in Love. While the plot is pretty generic, I liked the dynamic between Brigitte and Yuri. Though their relationship is competitive in nature (at least at this point in time), their banter is fun to read and you can already tell that these two “villains” have found someone they can rely on as they take on the real villains. Who said fire and water don’t mix well together?

Speaking of the real villains, Prince Joseph and his side piece will definitely get on your nerves (at least they did on mine). But there are certainly hints that their relationship is not all sunshine and rainbows, even if they try to outwardly portray it that way. I definitely look forward to their comeuppance.

If you enjoy fantasy, comedy, and are a sucker for the enemies-to-lovers trope, you should give If the Villainess and Villain Met and Fell in Love a try!

So, konnichiwa everybody, thank you to be here at the honda thanks day one more year, supporting all honda riders. As you know, this year is super special for me, because our journeys with honda will seperate. But of course we will see in the future if we can cross again our futures. But it's true that during these 11 years we achieved 6 world championships together, we did amazing things, we [intellegible, I'm not sure here I think it's "win it all" or maybe "we grow"] together. And for me, it was a pleasure to be a part of this great family, big family. And you know that repsol honda team will be the team of my career, the team that people will remember me [for]. “Thank you” is “ありがとう(Arigato)” in Japanese. When we have to be polite, we add “ございます(gozai-masu)” and say “ありがとうございます(Arigato gozai-masu)”.

The word “Arigato” comes from “ありがたい(Ari-gatai)”, which means “difficult(=gatai) to exist(=ari)”.

あり・がたい＝有(to exist, to be)・難い(difficult, hard)

For example, let’s say you carried an old woman’s heavy luggage for her, and she said “Arigato gozaimasu”. In this case, what you did is not what everyone could do and it means your help was difficult thing to exist, so you deserve to be said “Arigato”.

By learning about the origin of the word, I like this word very much. Every time I hear “Arigato”, I feel the sound of the word is very beautiful.

If you want to visit Japan but don't know any Japanese I have good news for you, and that news is that as long as you know a handful of words/phrases, have Google translate on your phone, and mostly stick to big cities, you'll generally be able to get by just fine.

The words you'll need the most are:

Sumimasen (soo-mee-mah-sehn): this is gonna be your most used word. It's 'sorry' and 'excuse me' and the word you use to get someone's attention, all rolled into one. Bump into someone on the train? Gotta squeeze past someone in Shinjuku? Need to get a waitstaff's attention? Sumimasen is your best friend.

Arigato (ah-ree-gah-tow): you probably already know this one! It means 'thank you'. Employees will give you 'arigato gozaimasu', but just an 'arigato' in return is generally enough. If you wanna sound more natural, drag the last syllable out a bit (arigatoo).

Kore (koh-reh): means 'this one'. Generally at restaurants you can point to something on the menu and they'll get the gist, but in the case that you can't do that (or you're at a place that doesn't have a menu. Like a normal store or something lol) and you wanna indicate something u want, pointing at it and saying 'kore' will get the point across.

Nihongo sukoshii (Nee-hone-go soo-kouh-shee) 'Only a little Japanese'. 'Nihongo' is 'Japanese' and 'sukoshii' is 'a little' (if you've ever heard 'just a skosh', it's derived from sukoshii!) Best used before showing someone something you plugged into Google translate on your phone in my experience lol

Toire ka? (Tow-ee-reh kawh): basically just, 'bathroom?' 'Ka' is what you tack onto any sentence to indicate that it's a question, 'toire' is the Japanese approximation of the word 'toilet'.

There iiiiis obviously a lot more Japanese that can help BUT like these are the phrases ur gonna use the most at least as far as I've been here. I'm not gonna say 'rely on ur anime knowledge' bc ur gonna look like a dumbass if u say 'dattebayo' to ppl but if you've managed to pick up. Idk. 'Matte' (wait) and 'kudasai' (please) and 'sugoi' (cool [like figuratively, like someone's outfit is cool, not temperature]) that will definitely help. Just like. Make sure beforehand that you're right. Maybe do a few duolingo courses lol
