I’m currently thinking about how John and Co. refused to call Alecto by her name. They named her fury and vengeance but could not acknowledge what made her thus. They call her Annie Laurie, reducing her to her looks, those so inhuman and frightening yet beautiful all the same. John gave her the name Annabel Lee, naming her existence as a tragedy in that she was his love lost. In both instances the literary references reduce the woman mentioned to nothing but set dressing for the man of the story and it truly betrays John’s thoughts on Alecto for as much as he claimed to love her, he sees her only as the stepping stone for his own story. “For John so loved her that he had made her she. For John had loved the world.” And that is the crux of the matter, John had loved the world but she is not the world, she is its fury. John wanted her to be calm beaches and lapping waves, he wanted a wife, sister, mother, and daughter all in one, but instead, he got 7 million silenced voices crying out in agony, furious at the injustice done to them. I think subconsciously he understood that when he named her Alecto, fury of wrath from Greek Mythology. But even if he had called her Gaia she would still be furious, for was it not Gaia who gave her children the scythe to kill her husband? Was it not Gaia who roared and shrieked to the depths of Tartarus when her children were torn from her arms? The first bearer of prophecy was forged from the grief and rage of an anguished mother; the earth has always been furious. John’s fatal flaw was that he could not comprehend that the rage was for him. He who promised love and safety but cut and stripped her soul stole her children and butchered her corpse. John could never truly comprehend that what he deemed his perfect creation could resent him the way she did. He took her away and reforged her into something she could never be. John denies the resentment Alecto feels for him and we can see this reflected in how he refers to her. John is the sort of man who thinks that if he sees a woman as nothing but her looks, he can make her lesser. To him, she is Annie Laurie of beautiful bust and a personality nonexistent; To him, she is Annabel Lee, a woman so pure and lovely that the angels stole her away from him. Subconsciously, the lyctors have adopted this as well, calling her these names out of fear and not realizing the implications of what they are doing. Even in writing, she is A.L. to them because somewhere deep down they know that to name her wrath is to invite it and invoke it. John believed that if he could compress the Earth into a beautiful shell then he could control it. The Earth has been around for far longer than he could ever truly comprehend, and she is furious.

Dance of Wolf and Raven: Prologue
Hi guys, this is the new Romance serial novel I've started featuring our mother, Adelina!
There'll be new chapters every Friday on Patreon, that are already scheduled and primed to release using Patreon's scheduler thingy every Mountain Standard Time 4pm.
There's currently 11k words written to give me a head start, of which 2 chapters are released.
A lot of it came about due to the worldbuilding spree I went on last year, and since I didn't want any of it to go to waste nor include it in the main game cause of bloat or fatigue, thought this was a good idea to do it!
So without further ado, here's the prologue!
Dance of Wolf and Raven: Prologue
It is the winter of 599 A.L.
Almost 600 hundred years have passed since the Belthean people landed upon these shores.
600 years After Landfall.
600 years of blood and conquest.
Today, just weeks before the turning of a new century, the continent of Nareth is unified by way of the spear.
And her father is to blame.
"Princess?" A familiar voice whispers worriedly.
Adelina, youngest princess of the Belthean Empire turns to her lady-in-waiting, Lady Valerie. She waits for her to continue.
Lady Valerie fidgets, her eyes looking everywhere within the carriage except the princess, who offers the nervous girl a hand on her knee. "Speak Valerie, there's no one else in here but us two."
The words and gesture seems to calm her down, though she still gulps before asking, "Was the empress able to…?"
Princess Adelina rolls her eyes as she crumbles back into her seat, a heavy and long sigh escaping her lips. She slumps further and further into her seat before Lady Valerie giggles and helps her sit straight again. But the worried look remains on her face.
Hesitantly, she places her hand upon that of the princess's. Gripping softly, she whispers, "Wrinkling the dress would only serve to anger your father, my lady," she says this sadly, her expression that of defeat.
And defeat it may have well been.
Her mother had tried protesting her daughter's marriage to the Butcher's son, both in public and in private. But her father wanted this alliance badly enough that her mother was ignored and overruled.
Thus, she was betrothed to the prince of a kingdom who had betrayed their allies and sided with her father in his invasion of the western territories.
If that wasn't bad enough, the father of the prince she was to marry had become infamous for massacring entire noble families in a single bloody night. He was known as a cold and emotionless man, ruthless in his decision making. And she was to marry that man's son.
Princess Adelina grips her dress in anger, causing Lady Valerie who notices to bring her close for an embrace.
Again, the princess stifles a sob, refusing to let tears come out. She made a promise to herself that she wouldn't cry.
She had been alone for too long. Abandoned by even her dear brothers who'd always protected her in the imperial palace.
Her eldest brother, Gareth, had fought alongside her betrothed in the war against Lymark, and she had waited for any letter of his to reassure her. Or perhaps express his support in canceling this arranged marriage.
Anything.
But none had arrived.
She didn't know what to make of it, even Daerin her second eldest brother hadn't been able to communicate with her. No one had.
Alone in the capital she had waited.
Her brothers off to wage the war started by her father, later followed by her mother once rumors of a marriage were being whispered at court.
Those shrews for sisters had already married before the invasion to stabilize the empire.
It wasn't long after that she was ordered to ready herself for marriage, but not with a high lord from the empire, or someone she at least liked or knew how to handle.
But with a foreign prince from a kingdom that had betrayed its ally.
She was to be an offering of peace sent by her father, like something that could be given.
Like an object.
The iron inside her heats again.
She straightens herself, gently pushing Lady Valerie off her. She nods thanks to her lady-in-waiting.
'That's right…' she thinks to herself. 'That man pretends I don't exist until he needs a daughter to marry off.'
Her eyes narrow as she focuses on controlling the growing storm within her.
Her mind is set.
The emperor of the greatest nation ever forged, calling for the forgotten and unwanted princess to arrange her marriage without an honor guard. Without scores of retainers. With only one lady-in-waiting, who volunteered.
Only a temporary escort was given.
A single carriage, with a single cart loaded with whatever she could fit inside it.
Lady Valerie had tried defending her father when the journey started.
"Who would dare?" She said.
The princess knew deep within that it made sense. That the lands were now pacified, now moreso than in any other time period.
Who would dare face against the emperor of all Nareth? The king of kings, the Goddess' representative on the mortal plane, and most important of all… the wielder of one of two most powerful weapons in all creation, A'luthean Armor. Handed down throughout the generations by her family, it has impacted the world in numerous ways.
Depending on who is asked, it is either a curse or blessing that only a single member of the imperial bloodline could possess that artifact at a time, as it bonds with that person for life. No other, even with the Ravenea bloodline running through their veins, can use the holy relic crafted by the Goddess Herself for Her Champions during the A'lethic Era.
Her ancestor, Garland the Conqueror, founded the Belthean Empire with it.
Her great-great-grandfather, Emperor Saldwin, used it to bring a nation to its knees, and forced another to become "Imperial Friend and Ally".
These and other such acts forced the Archpriestess to ban the use of such relics in wars, or to proclaim excommunication upon those who broke the decree.
'But how could the Archpriestess force an imperial dynasty to not use its most powerful weapon?' was a question she had asked her tutors when learning of this proclamation.
Excommunication meant losing the accounts, support, legitimacy, and administration provided by the church, but was it enough to stop her family from imposing its will?
She knew it wasn't.
Princess Adelina feels her mind racing once more as she pictures executing her plan, and a small smile sneaks its way across her face.
"Valerie," she rests her left elbow the side of the carriage as she gets her lady-in-waiting's attention, "what can you tell me about the kingdom, or more specifically, my husband-to-be?"
Lady Valerie smiles at the informal use of her name, though she quickly regains her professional demeanor, "Why, you should kno-"
The princess cuts her off, "I'm only refreshing what I know, don't worry," she responds quickly waving a hand dismissively, "Please, think of it as an exercise or an escape from the daily boredom."
Her counterpart rubs her thighs as she knew all too well how uncomfortable it was to travel via carriage for so long a distance.
"Okay…" she replies, a bit absentmindedly as she begins to recount all that she'd learned over the journey to aid the princess.
With smile still in place, the princess innocently presses on, "What's so special about my betrothed?"
Lady Valerie, either ignoring or not catching the tone, answers immediately, "Why, that'd be either his eyes and hair, his status as the future king of Argent, or the fact he belongs to the only other A'luthean bloodline in Nareth."
Princess Adelina excitedly claps her hands, only to lean forward towards her friend, "And what exactly does that mean?"
A knot of worry forms on Lady Valerie's eyebrows as she carefully answers, "… it means he will be given his family's complete set of Blessed Armor, given to their line by the Goddess Herself, the A'luthean Armor of Argent?"
The princess laughs at her friend's textbook answer, "Oh Val! How long did you practice memorizing all that?"
Lady Valerie however saw the change in the princess' face when she gave her answer. "Lina… what exactly are you planning?"
Princess Adelina slowly sits back into her seat, making herself comfortable. "Nothing… just happy to hear my match is of such a Blessed bloodline!"
The smile on her face however, doesn't reach her eyes.
'The Archpriestess could only stop the imperial family from using their A'luthean Armor with the threat of another,' she thinks to herself as she leans back on her seat, her head on the puffed headrest. 'The other belonging to a royal family on the other side of the continent, in the Kingdom of Argent.'
She was to be the wife and queen of the one who would inherit such power, power enough to equal her father.
Princess Adelina was to become Queen Adelina. Here in this foreign kingdom she would be treated with respect. She would ensure it. Never again will she have to be under her father's control, never again will she be discarded and used in the negotiations of men.
And all she had to do was seduce her soon-to-be husband.

The plan going forward is this. For the sfw thread, at the end of the month ill be posting the Patreon version of the revised demo.
The NSFW KaE Thread will receive the Silverhill Martial Route four weeks after the Patreons receive it.

ROUND ONE: SURPRISE PHANTOM MATERIALS FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE INTERNET
The Earl Behind the Mask by Abby Ayles is a 2020 (January, I missed it) historical romance novel in which Rose, an earl’s daughter, doesn’t want to get married to her arranged fiance, a man who goes by “The Specter” and wears a mask in order to perform incognito at the theater without ruining his reputation (he’s also an earl). But is that really why he wears a mask? (They’ll tell you at the literally called out “point of no return.”)
The Shattered Chandelier by Lillian Blackwood is a 2017 contemporary paranormal, with a main character named Natasha whose roommate is a werepanther and whose coworkers are dating vampires. But, having stolen a giant magic mirror recently, Natasha is starting to worry about some weird shit that is happening. As the tagline tells us, “A serial killer is stalking the night, and there really might be a phantom at the opera!”
Protecting the Babysitter by Nikki Bloom is a 2020 (ALSO January which I was apparently asleep at the wheel for) contemporary romance novel in which Crystal, but a lowly babysitter, has sex with her dashing yet mysterious billionaire boss Erik, but then SECRETS APPEAR. Crystal’s sister’s name is “Christine.” Even funnier, Erik’s last name is “Crawford.”
Twenty-One by D. Victoria BonAnno is a 2017 horror novel in which Chloe Leroux is kidnapped and sold as a sex slave to a “darkly erotic” weirdo dude named Demetrius. The major theme appears to be “yeah, this is a totally fucked up relationship, let’s lean into that.”
Tears and Crimson Velvet: A Legacy of the Mask Tale by A.L. Butcher is a 2017 sequel to the original novella Legacy of the Mask, which I did manage to catch but then flubbed the follow-up. This is a period retelling of Leroux’s story billed as a “what might have been” tale, suggesting that things end differently than they did in the original.
Lágrimas Ocultas by Angela del Oso Reguero is a Spanish-only sequel to the original novel which specifically lists Leroux, Lloyd Webber, and Kay as its major influences. It refuses to tell you what it’s about, though so, you’re going ot have to investigate these hidden tears on your own.
Molto Grande by Dick Franklin is a 2019 historical set at the turn of the eighteenth century in Italy, where two brothers who seem to be a split Phantom in the mold of various movie versions are either learning to be a castrato opera sensation, or run away to live with a local Roma community where he falls in love but is afraid romance can never be due to severe scarring on half of his face. It’s a lot to unpack.
Passion’s Dance by Joanna Glenn is the 2015 slightly reimatined tale of a ballet dancer at the Paris Opera who must marry a local Viscount and patron of the opera in order to escape crushing poverty but oops, she has accidentally fallen in love with a severely wounded and disfigured soldier who is actually the PRINCE OF CRIMEA IN DISGUISE. It looks like it’s set in about the same era as the original, but with more shenaniganry.
Erik’s Tale by Devin Harnois is a 2013 retelling of the story from Erik’s perspective instead of Christine’s, hitting largely the same beats but emphasizing Erik’s emotional journey from obsession to actual love and some sort of ultimate sacrifice where he’ll literally die if he gives Christine up so it’s even MORE tragic, if you’re into that.

Photo
Tumblr media
This post doesn’t have a reference to the Iowa State Daily, but with the next Campustown building demolition taking place during the next few days, this quick history is timely.
These three buildings, 2512 Lincoln Way (left), 2516 Lincoln Way, and 2518 Lincoln Way, will soon be a memory. But this entry is about 2512 Lincoln Way. It is highly notable because in one of the earliest photos of Campustown, the building is present.
Tumblr media
This photo, circa 1912, looks up Welch Avenue from the campus. On the left (east) side, you can see A.L. Champlin’s College Store, torn down in 2014. On the right (west) side is John Zimmerman’s giant boardinghouse, which burned down in 1910, and to its west is another building. That is 2512 Lincoln Way, built by barber Fred I. Banks in 1909 and last occupied by Taste Place in 2017.
The building wasn’t mentioned in the Daily’s archive. It’s opening was overshadowed by the opening of Champlin’s brick building. But The Ames Times still noted the new building in its edition from 28 January 1909:
NEW 4TH WARD STORES OPEN Business Interest at the West End of Boone Street Booming.—Two Stores and a Barber Shop Open up.
The residence district near the campus on the south and west is becoming a suburb in fact. Up to this time all the trading which the numerous boarding houses and residences out lying the campus had to do was either done is down town or at two small general stores, one south and one west of the campus.
Last week A. L. Champlin opened up his very excellent brick store building south of the campus. The building is 50x98 and is of pressed brick me with Bedford stone trimmings. On the ground floor are two commodious store rooms. A butcher shop opened up in one of these rooms and a grocery will occupy the other as soon as shelving can be put in.
Later in the week F.I. Banks opened up a barber shop in a substantial frame building which he had erected for the purpose.
These two concerns should do much to alleviate the dissatisfaction of the college people as they are right in the heart of the residence and boarding house district.
Before building his Lincoln Way location, Banks ran the College Barber Shop on campus. He sold it in late October 1908 to Frank Curtiss, of the OK Barber Shop in downtown Ames and who quickly ran the College Barber Shop into the ground amidst a scandal. According to land records, Banks bought the land a week after selling the college shop, and the building was built and ready for business by late January.
Banks’ barber shop is only listed at the address for a couple years, but a barber shop is frequently listed in the basement in later years. (Barber shops weren’t often noted in city directories in the early 1900s.)
Later Businesses
Businessman Lewis F. Romans moved his restaurant to the building around 1911, followed by Lincoln Candy Kitchen, and J.W. Linder’s and Trueblood’s shoe shops in the 1920s. In the 1930s, Campus Cafe began its 40-year run in the building. Barber shops in the basement included Sweeny’s, Lincoln Way, and Louie’s. After Campus Cafe came Grubstake Barbeque and for a bit, a sporting goods store in the basement (Cyclone Ice Shop, Sports Cellar). In the 1980s, salons returned to the basement with Penny Lane Hair Stylist and in the late ‘80s, the first location of Leedz Salon, which is still in business down the street. Grubstake Barbeque turned to Cafe Lovish, which closed around 2007. In the past decade, occupants have been Bombay Grill, Rice House, The Singer Station, and finally Taste Place.

Friday 13 February 1835: SH:7/ML/E/17/0162
7 10
11 5
No kiss. rainy morning and F42° at 8 5 tho’ it had been fine before - Breakfast at 8 ¼ - then read from page 73 to 97 Philip on Indigestion - then moved my papers from the bureau drawers in the little dining room to the drawers (Marian let me have in exchange) in the Low kitchen chamber - then some while talking to Marian - then with A- and a minute or 2 with my aunt till 12 ¼ - then rain prevented my going out immediately after breakfast - Joseph Gill (whom Pickells went after yesterday) called to speak to me about 10 am but declined seeing him - had Throp’s son for a minute or 2 about whether the sycamores were right set out at the top of the bank - out at 12 25 - or rather Marian called me to consult me about her journey to Market Weghton. About Mrs Inman who it seems is now quite insane again and Sarah was miserable the last holidays at home but Mr Inman cannot live long and then all may be right told Marian she had best console Sarah as well as she could and let things quietly take their course. In talking and in one way or other all the morning frittered away - out at 1 ½ - the gardeners (Throp junior and 1 man) had planted the 5 more sycamores at the top of the bank - met Pickells the magistrates could not grant him a summons for the people on horseback who passed thro’ Whiskum bar on Wednesday without paying their penny a piece - it was a case at Common law - met Holt going to the drift - will come after dinner on Wednesday - sure I can stop the Spiggs colliery without hurting Walker pit - out with A- at 2 - down the old bank to Halifax - we went to Leylands to inquire about completing A-‘s set of Lodges’s portraits - then left A- at Whitely while I went to Mr Parker’s office - saw him on the subject of the hunters - desired him to consult with Mr Adams and do what was best against the people who passed thro’ the bar without paying - to write to each whom Pickells’ wife could swear to viz. Mr. Jeremiah Dyson, John Clark the huntsman, ---- Dawson of Halley Hill, John Peel the butcher and Mr. John Carr, Innkeeper, to say an action would be commenced against them if they did not pay the bar and the expense of Mr. Parker’s letter - then read sentence from Mrs. Sutherland’s last letter to A- respecting Pattersons’ s bond - he not prepared to pay it off - mentioned A-‘s intention to have a division of the property and pushing it forward and hope of completing it in 6 months - and meaning to employ some law man at a distance for fear of being thought to be favoured by Mr Parker - SW now busy about the valuation - Mr P- strongly for A-‘s getting the business done at home or there would be great expense and trouble in sending the deeds to a stranger - it might be done (the law part) for £150 - thought Pattersons’ bond had better stand over and be taken by whomsoever got the Baily hall estate - would divide the Halifax property - but not Golear - liked the plan of dividing partly according to contiguity to the entailed estates and partly by lot - thought the division would be for the welfare of both sides - 40 minutes with Mr P- then rejoined A- at Whitely’s - went to Miss Hebden’s about mechlin lace to know if some  A-lately bought there was really mechlin - yes! bought by Miss Hebden in Paris for such - returned up the new bank home at 4 20 left A- in the house and from 4 ½ to 5 55 out with John Booth and Pickells setting out 4 more sycamores in John Oates’s field and 8 at the top of George R-‘s daisy bank - changed my dress - dinner at 6 20 - coffee - came upstairs at 8 5 and wrote all but the 1st 7 lines of today - Note from Mr Bradley to say he will be here at 10 am tomorrow - Marian’s young friend here so wished my father good night on our coming in from Halifax - got the first 18 fasciculi of Quain’s anatomy from Booths’ this morning - read the 1st fasciculus this evening then  ½ hour with my aunt till 10 10 at which hour F46 ½° damp day - highish wind towards night and wind more or less all the day -
 SH:7/ML/E/17/0163
then in 25 minutes wrote 2 pages to M- dated Saturday morning anxious about herself and poor Percy - taken with her - account of Easton and King’s Weston - her excursionizing admirable - A- much pleased with her (M-‘s) perspective will return the book with many thanks in 2 or 3 weeks - thanks to good Mrs Duff for the excellent short bread she put into my carriage on leaving Lawton - hope Martha has gone on well - ‘I write with considerable pain from a tight bandage and compress on my right wrist which I badly sprained about 10 days ago and was told I must not expect anything like a cure under a month - How are you yourself? I shall be very anxious for good tidings - Ever very affectionately and especially yours A.L.’ - had just written so far at 9 40 pm - 20 minutes with my aunt till 10 at which hour F45° - driving rain in the morning and haze and small rain from about 4 ½ for the rest of the afternoon and evening - pretty fair while A- and I were out.
