Henry always struggled to have a good night's sleep. Alex made it easier over the years they had been together, but little cries in the middle of the night always woke Henry.

"I say this with all the love in the world," she says. "But sometimes, I swear, you are the most oblivious idiot on the face of the planet."

“You better have a good fucking reason for sending me to voicemail, Hen.” He glares at the phone for one second before he actually sees the screen, and then his face melts into something Henry can only describe as fond. “Oh,” he whispers, dropping his mug of coffee onto the counter so he can lean in closer to the phone. “Look who’s there.”

“Yeah.” Henry keeps his voice so low he isn’t even sure Alex can hear him. He doesn’t seem to mind, eyes taking in the picture in front of him with parted lips, the edge of his finger covering the camera when he undoubtedly reaches to caress his daughter’s head.

Or, Alex misses his daughter when he goes back to work after a long paternity leave.

Which… obviously is fine because Alex is not an asshole, but he’s definitely feeling something about this development that he will examine at a later date. He notices then the umbrella clutched in the little boy’s hand, the innocent wide eyes watching his father, and the picture forms in his head.

Henry's lower lip wobbles, and a fresh tear rolls down his cheek. Alex watches it track down to his chin, and wonders if Henry would mind him wiping it away. “I really was looking forward to seeing them.”

Another tear escapes, and this time Alex can't help but lean forward and brush it away with his thumb. Henry's breath catches, and he looks at Alex, wearing an expression he can't quite parse. “Come home with me,” Alex blurts out.

Henry's plans for Christmas fall through, so Alex invites him home for the holidays. They're best friends, strictly platonic roommates, so why does everyone think they're dating?

The man starts to cock the hammer of gun, and Alex squeezes his eyes shut, his lower lip trembling almost imperceptibly.

“Stop!” Henry shouts, his voice cracking. “I’ll give you whatever you want, I’ll do anything…just please, don’t hurt him.”

Alex’s eyes fly open, shooting Henry the same incredulous look that he gave him in the hallway, and Henry knows he’s shown too much of his hand, revealed a part of himself that he’d sworn he would take to his grave, but he’s too full of fear and desperation to feel self-conscious about it now. He can deal with the consequences when they get out of this.

Alex blinked. After two weeks of hearing nothing but the voices of snooty men and frazzled secretaries calling in, the person on the other line now sounded decidedly neither snooty nor male nor in any way adult.

It was a little girl.

"Mr. Fox-Mountchristen's unfortunately in a meeting right now,” Alex began slowly, “but I could take a message?"

"Oh." The girl paused. "You're not Mr. Hunter."

Alex starts a new job as Henry's new assistant. Henry's daughter keeps calling the office and leaving him messages.

next one, next one! We have Three students. They're away together outside London to 'escape circumstances' in 1895. Yeah. Watson is being worried for Holmes but they're together. And at least in being together they can tease each other

And clearly get a laugh out of it, since Watson isn't writing this with any bitterness. And then, of course, Holmes is Holmes.

Bursting into Watson's ahem, THEIR room, maybe greeting him with a kiss, And asking him to skip breakfast or at least to postpone it for a while! And of course Watson answers with a yes.

ENTER solitary cyclist. They are simply very married, Holmes even APOLOGIZES to Watson.

And they have a danger-case date in the country! Watson likes it.

Of course the evening the case is solved they hug and cuddle once they're back at baker street. Holmes is feeling down because he made a blunder, Watson because he can't run as fast as Holmes. Cuddling MIGHT indeed make them feel better. Kissing each other, showing their love to the other.

Now enter Black Peter! It starts with proud and exasperated husband Watson, of course. Who is totally unruffled by yeah, y'know, Holmes entering the room with an harpoon in his hands.

Well, ALMOST. Totally unruffled. He's surprised. That he is. He's already living there again toh. That much is clear. But then, once accepted the case they go on the palce itself, well

Mr. I hate the countryside goes with his husband to take a walk in the woods. Because WATSON likes it. And because in the woods there are corners secluded enough to allow them a little kissy here and there! Then a nice ambush and we'll see the solution of the case At breakfast!

Holmes is grumpy and Watson notices. Watson MUST have taken Holmes in his lap once back to baker street. Cat-Detective Husband loves it!

Holmes HATED this case. Poor darling.

Oh! And Watson saves him again as they arrest the murderer

And then off to Norway, time for a good vacation!

Time to have some Quality Time between husbands! They so love each other!

This said, the statement in today's letter was quite obvious.

After he reports the teasing at breakfast, i'd say even an UNNECESSARY statement.

We knew, Watson. We had got it PERFECTLY WELL that you and your husband were living together again. And probably fucking each other silly against the most various surfaces of baker street, other then in your beds.

The View from the Diogenes - A Mycroft Holmes-eye view of some of ACD's Sherlock Holmes. My heart was on the floor a couple of times.

'YeeH&W' Series by FruitViking, an 1800s Wild-West AU of Sherlock Holmes. Currently on the fourth one.

Many Roads by PR Zed. Three different Fix-its for the 1942 film 'Random Harvest.' I read it when I need a warm snuggle

Also three Real Life Book Recs to make up for it;

'Pastoral' by Nevile Shute (c.1944). A slice of life and Romance on an Oxfordshire bomber station in the War. I love this book, because it has such a sense of time and character for all the cast. Why wasn't there a film?

'The Library of Lost Words' by Pip Williams. Set around the composition of The Oxford Dictionary, lead character is the Editor's daughter. It weaves in discussion over which words are considered worthy to be enclosed. Beautifully written, really good sense of character, place and time.

'Mosquito' by Rowland White - I've only just started this one, but I'm gripped so far. It's a biography of the 'Wooden Wonder' written quite accessibly and also very interesting

Although I hadn't until this year learnt the proper detailed punctuation around speech (whether there's a comma, full-stop, dash etc. Reeeally steep learning curve there.

Or Sam fast asleep on an injured Andrew, with Christopher Foyle rapidly realising he's Missed Something Going On, from 'There but for...'

PS the next fic in the series has been put in for WIP-Big Bang so I finish it, so I'm hopeful that will get an illustration :)

Bios for Rei's Pokemon team in ACD because I love them:

(Alpha Hisuian) Lilligant: Rei's Physically strongest Pokemon. She's a bit vain and proud but also incredibly kind and enjoys the work she gets to do with Rei. She helps a lot with more physical tasks due to her dexterity and loves the attention and thanks she gets from patients for doing so. She takes pride in what she does and how important it makes her feel. She is a bonded partner to Chatot. Loves dancing and performance.

Sylveon: Sylveon is Rei's strongest Pokemon when it comes to special attacks but he has a gentle nature and dislikes fighting. He's a huge snuggle bug and just wants to be on someone's lap all day. He's not as well suited to a battling team due to his nature but he's really enjoyed his new job being a therapy Pokemon for the Med Corps. He's especially good at stopping mental breakdowns by using the calming aura his feelers can produce to help people get control of their emotions. Volo especially makes use of this to both help cope with the trauma of his attack and the general emotional instability he feels when he gets worked up over something.

Blissey: Big mom friend who wants to make sure everyone stays out of trouble. Decently strong but more of a healer. Rei raised her from a Happiny but she still manages to act like his mom at times. Rei enjoys this a bit because god knows he misses his mom. She enjoys cooking lucky egg based dishes and has a lot of pride invested in how they turn out. She's very happy to be involved with the Med Corps and enjoys spending time helping people get strong and healthy again.

Chatot: Easily Rei's weakest Pokemon but still a very valued member of the team. He loves Rei immensely and spends a lot of time singing and playing music together with him. Rei has taught him how to mimic just about every song he knows at this point. He's definitely the little buddy of the group and while he's never been useful for any serious Med Corps work he's good at keeping spirits high and entertaining people. He loves to sing to Lilligant so she can dance to the music. He's the cutest portable music player Rei has ever had and he's greatful to Chatot for helping him keep track of all the songs from the future he doesn't want to forget.

Pride & Providence

The Pride & Prejudice inspired fic is complete! It ended up a bit longer and a bit angstier than I intended, but still with the iconic Jane Austen quotes! (Although besides that it really has nothing to do with Pride & Prejudice but shhhhh) Read it here. 

Holmes and Watson return to Baker Street after the arrest of Colonel Moran and deal with the aftermath of Holmes' dramatic return from the dead.

“I am still angry, Holmes, but I meant it when I told you this afternoon that I never was happier to see anyone in my life—dear God, I missed you so.” He smiled faintly and placed his hand over mine which still rested upon his knee; we sat in silence for what felt like a very long time. Our hands pressed together felt strange and new but yet inevitable, as if they had always been that way, and my fingers ached to grab hold of his own, to press them to my chest and hold him there forever.

I was half-expecting someone to ask me to sort/rate Watsons or such against each other, and yet I still laughed when this came in. 1. Whitehead: The glances! The shared smirks! The eyeliner! Holmes is constantly bidding for Watson's attention, and when he isn't actively trolling Watson or looking for his approbation, then he's openly admiring Watson's figure/punching/fencing/deductions. These two are constantly acting like they share a secret, them two against the world, and what, oh what, WHAT might that secret ever be?? 2. ACD: High marks for inspiring some top-notch and highly beloved fic and art! That said, Doyle's stories themselves don't read very shippily to me? I don't know what to say, it's a paradox. 3. My Dearly Beloved Detective: Jane needs to take some time and sort some shit out. When she has, I'm 100% here for the two of them -- or the three of them: I'm down with a Shirley/Jane/Robbie vee. 4. Miss Sherlock: On the one hand, the BBC vibes are very strong, Sherlock often didn't treat Wato very well, and Wato was mind-controlled for most of the show. On the other hand, this may be the only adaptation where Sherlock had an ironclad reason to fake her death to Watson, so points for that. Maybe these two kids can make it work post-Return, but let's be real: Wato's got a fuck-ton of therapy in front of her (and every reason to be wary of doing it!), while Sherlock has barely even known Wato when she wasn't Moriarty's mind-controlled puppet. 5. Elementary: god, it KILLS me to put Elementary at the bottom of the list, but you used a '/'. (If you'd used an ampersand, it'd be at the top.) Joan and Sherlock are ride-or-die for each other, are committed partners to each other, are each who the other loves best in the world, and are each helping the other strive for the best versions of themselves -- they're amazing together, and I'll fight anyone who says different. But they're both aro-spec, and not in ways that seem particularly compatible to me. They'll bump along together until they die, but whenver they're looking for bumping (or kisses or snuggles) they both look elsewhere for it.

Rec: This is a gorgeously complex fic with absolutely everything going for it: you’ve got the case, you’ve got the psychology, you’ve got the instant attraction tempered by emotional fragility, you’ve got the steaming physical chemistry coupled with the tender awkwardness of sexual innocence, and finally, you’ve got the shocking twist you never saw coming. I’ll be honest, I expected something fairly OOC given the professional cuddler description, but it works very well and is full of all the angst and personal walls you’d expect from these two.

Watching “The Lying Detective”

I have a season 4 disc with no commentary or bonus features. I watched “The Six Thatchers” last night. I wanted to spend time looking at the Mind Palace theory. There’s so much meta out there. I swing between the theories of “The writers just jumped the shark” and “The writers are deep and wise people and have a meaning and purpose beyond what my measly human mind can conceive.”

Evidence of some alternate reality/mind palace theory: (from “TST”)

1) why is the damn skull picture glowing?

2) Mary jumping in front of the bullet. Hello laws of physics.

Not evidence but other things to consider: John’s reaction to Mary’s death didn’t ring true as well. John when Sherlock jumped tore my heart out. The scream/ grunt he makes over Mary just made me cringe.

We really have no indication that Sherlock woke from his OD on the plane.

Eurus as John’s love interest subplot. Getting on and off the island. Wtf?

John the doctor not trying to save Mary. No 999 or anything. Contrast this with the reaction to Sherlock lying shot in CAM’s office - calls 999.

Now it’s on to the Lying Detective -

It’s painful. I can’t look away. I remember thinking that maybe Mary faked her death when we saw Dead Mary in John’s house.

Oh my heart. John and Mary looking at each other over Eurus’ shoulder. John’s look just makes my heart crack for him.

I can remember thinking “this therapist is slightly obsessed with Sherlock”

Ugh, I hear the car. We are now approaching the part I hate. Magical manic drugged Sherlock who knows everyone’s plans. Oops not yet.

Nevermind, jump to Culvertson Smith.

Shit. Everything about his seems farcical.

This is what I hate hate hate hate about Season 4. The actors are so amazing. The emotional truths are so spot on while the outside world is more and more absurd.

Ugh. The way Smith grabs Faith’s hair is so so creepy.

So all those things Sherlock deduces from Eurus/Faith about her relationship and living situation. Are they true?part of the act?

I didn’t recognize the two Faith Smith’s were different. I’m guilty of seeing her as just a background character as well.

Okay poor drugged Sherlock and his slow reaction. But when he rushed downstairs to save Faith/Eurus, I love him so much. “Your life is not your own. Keep your hands off it.” Straight from ACD.

Oh shit. He actually flashes back to John and the cane. I’d forgotten that. Suicidal, no way to get home, going out into the night with a gun.

So are we to believe Eurus is committing self harm to pose as Faith? Wouldn’t that be noticed in her other roles?

Ooh very clever and sixth sense here. No one interacts with Faith/Eurus.

The Chip shop seems like a hallucination. No one else there. And how has Eurus had this paper for three years? All of the deductions are about Faith or Eurus?

Faith isn’t visible on any of the cameras. 6th sense.

“the last time.” Bullshit. Mycroft is the government. He wouldn’t accidentally let slip about Eurus to John. He didn’t even tell John his wife was an assassin.

Starting over a few days later.... the Culbertson Smith drugging scene is still awful.

Skipped ahead to aquarium/bridge. I love love the Sherlock who would walk all night with a stranger to prevent her suicide.

I realize that he’s trying to prevent himself from jumping here... did I always know that?

I used to hate the hallucination scene so much but I kind of get it now. I still don’t like the walking on the walls bit.

Okay, now we are back to “off his tits” Sherlock interrupting John’s therapy. Btw, “off his tits” is a fun Britishism that I intend to steal.

Sherlock pacing and reciting Shakespeare is awesome.

Okay before this scene got ridiculous, I love it. Sherlock in the trunk. Mrs. Hudson with the gun...

Then the everyone showing up at the therapist is annoying. It didn’t need to be two weeks in advance to be a good scene. Or only John/Mrs. Hudson and the point would have been made.

This scene with the kids is so bizarre.

Apparently this is supposed to parallel Jimmy Saville. How everyone knew something was wrong but weren’t able to articulate it.

Oooh that look between John and Sherlock at the end of the scene. John knows. Sherlock is right. The game is on and John is aligned with Sherlock again. For better or worse...

Oh this scene in the morgue. Oh no.

Sherlock doubting himself. This is awful. This scene is awful. I’m glad we intercut with the Greg interview because it’s too much.

Shit. 3-4 punches. 6? Kicks. Oh. My. God. John.

John.

A punch or two could be forgiven. But the kicking. He’s down. Stop.

John looks like David Mamet here. But when he looks Sherlock in the eye and said “yes you did.” You don’t come back from that. The little snuggle at the end of this episode doesn’t come close to making it okay.

Does John’s hair part like this so we can’t be sure if it’s him or Culverton Smith looking at Sherlock. Creepy. They both wished him harm.

The parallels are almost too much.

John confronting Mycroft is old John again.

I love Hudson here.

Smith preparing to kill Sherlock ... is his voice breaking for Smith’s benefit or is he really scared?

Damn. I used to hate season 4 but as I rewatch and take notes, there is so so much I love.

I love Lestrade at the confession scene. He wants to strangle Smith.

Oh! Oh! Oh! Mary saved his life because she knew that it would devestate John for Sherlock to die again. Wait no ... she also killed Sherlock to keep John so can we assume that she became that selfless? I don’t know. It is possible though.

Shit. What would Sherlock have said if John hadn’t interrupted?

Oh Sherlock’s face when John talks to imaginary Mary...

And the hug (tm). So much fandom ink has been spilt but I love the hug. Maybe the most authentic moment in season4. I kind of want to believe Sherlock kisses John’s hair here.

As much as I love Johnlock, I don’t even care if it happens. The relationship between these two is so important — more important than anything else about the show. As long as, in a mythical season 5, the writers remember that this isn’t James Bond or MCU but a world which is only slightly fantastic and that the heart of the story is these two characters, I’ll be fine.

This episode is about pain. The Culverton Smith scenes and the drug hallucinations and the “I know everyone’s plans 6 weeks in advance” stuff bordered on silly, but the heart of this episode is so gut-wrenching. There’s a tentative redemption at the end, which is why I think I feel so damn cheated by “The Final Problem.”

Okay… Not sure if BBC!Johnlock are up to that Domestic Challenge (ACD & Co certainly are) but you’re magic when it comes to art, therefore I’m confident that can get the boys… to bake a cake in 221B.

I love baking. It’s a great way to cheer one/myself up. And as it’s part of 221B Consolation… Chocolate Cake?! I mean, that’s pretty great.

Sherlock could be “all science”. Baking is sort of chemistry, after all. And it ends in a mess. But you know, they’re still giggling. Maybe John had a bad day or something. Or, not sure if you’re one for parentlock, a birthday cake for Rosie
