I agree, it's already happening! When I see an image that someone painstakingly drew with their own hands, I relish the little mistakes we artists make, the little shortcuts and "nah, good enough" bits. It means we may not draw perfectly, but we still made the effort despite the shortcomings. My favourite reverse pleasure of this is finding the mistakes the AI makes, which are universally silly mistakes no real artist would ever make.
in an age of ai images and ai videos everything online starts to feel less real and less trustworthy so we have to resort to things we know to be true like real-life communities where grass is touched and also being unmarketable weirdos on tumblr
#fuck ai#ai image generation#its not art#it does numb me a little#but I still think it's SO obvious when it's AI#like seriously I have not successfully been deceived yet afaik ofc lol

The Republican Party hates art but love AI Image Generation. Not many understand the real reason why.
Art requires the ability to critically think and be creative.
AI Image Generation does not and it allows for the Republican Party to pump out as much propaganda as they want and not have a waiting period.
I still remember all the Republican Propaganda of cats with MAGAt hats and assault rifles after Trump’s “eating cats and dogs”. It allowed them to spread that lie as far as possible with no critical thinking or analysis.
Republicans reject art, they embrace propaganda just as much as they reject the worker but embrace the CEO.

...Online leftists will say "Instead of spreading a moral panic about AI art, these online artists should organize a labor movement" and then never lift a fucking finger to help with or, god forbid, actually initiate said labor organizing.

I went into the watercolor tag because I like to scroll through and reblog the gorgeous art posted there and holy fucking shit was it botted to hell and back with fucking AI image generator spam accounts. I reported dozens of them but they all had basically the same name and then a number at the end and there were hundreds of them and I guarantee that they are flooding other art tags and it is just so frustrating because I go on Tumblr and into art tags to engage with artists, not with people who can't even be arsed to pick up a pen or pencil

This is an AI-generated image

This is not a photo. It's not Midjourney output either. Some basement nerd kept cooking and cooking data models for Stable Diffusion until he got to this point. This looks like a hobbyist photographer messing with an entry-level DSLR camera, with mostly correct anatomy and lighting. And what's important, a five year old gaming computer will need just a minute to generate a shot like this.

I could literally take photos like this. Fuck, I did take photos like this. A bit of grit, a bit of fuzz, loose strands of hair sticking out, those pictures are better than perfect - they're believable. Any schmuck can ask for razor-sharp shots of overly photoshopped supermodels with a fuckton of filters on top on Midjourney. Good luck catfishing anyone with those. But this data model, it's so good at being average it's a fucking achievement. You wouldn't look at it twice if I didn't tell you. Those weirdly tall dandelions would go right over your head. You wouldn't even think twice about the nailpolish missing from the thumb but perfect on the index finger. Or that one weird fold on the skirt. AI characters don't have blemished skin after all. Or normal hands.
As a photographer, I'm impressed. As someone who deals with Stable Diffusion, I'm impressed too. And that does mean something.

"The heart is the center of our emotions and thoughts, and it is the primary means of expressing our true selves. It also serves as a bridge connecting our conscious and unconscious minds."

"The heart is the place where we feel and think, acting like a command center of sorts.
It is because of our hearts that our emotions and thoughts are born, leading to our actions.
In other words, the heart is an essential tool for expressing ourselves.
Furthermore, the heart also serves as a bridge between the conscious and the unconscious.
The conscious refers to thoughts and emotions we are clearly aware of, while the unconscious refers to deep-seated thoughts and feelings that, although we are not usually aware of them, influence our actions and emotions.
By connecting these two, the heart allows us to understand ourselves on a deeper level.
Therefore, nurturing the heart is synonymous with nurturing oneself.
By listening to the voice of the heart and understanding our emotions and thoughts, we can confront ourselves and cultivate the strength to live authentically."

I keep making a joke that Ai artists are just the kids that traced in year 7 and told everyone they drew it but now that I think about it some (not all) Ai artists really do have a childish tracers mentality
I mean the ones who won't share their prompts and gloat at artists how their ""art""" is so much better and artists are gonna get replaced. Like the guy who generated a run of the mill one piece image (with some very obvious Ai fuckery in there) when someone pointed it out he told them they could never draw a pic like that
that someone was an animator for one piece.
For a kid who never moves past tracing or Ai artist with that attitude they found the "shortcut" to the end result, they don't care about creation...that's hard they just care about the little buzz they get when they show someone else their pretty picture and say "I made this"
#tracing isn't the worst thing btw and all kids do it at some point#not even trying to shit on ai artists in general it's just a particular type#ai#ai art#tracer#tracing#ai image generation#anti ai#ai discourse#ai art discourse#ai artist#ai artists

ID: A two panel comic.
First Panel: a businessman (suit, tie, executive haircut) holding up a pixelated image (a orange and yellow sphere on a background gradient of green to red to blue) saying: "With AI image generation, we don't have to pay artists to advertise our product"
Second Panel: a man in a red t-shirt and ball cap looking at a poster (the same image as the first panel, but with a starburst caption in the corner reading "New"). The man remarks "Hmm, AI... must be a cheap scammy product if they couldn't afford an artist."

I decided to test the new version of Stable Diffusion, called Flux. The prompt is at least similar to what I tested SDXL 1.0 with, a hippie girl wearing a t-shirt with the words "Everything Will Be Alright".
Well, shit. The thing is an absolute fucking behemoth, with a 11 GB data model and 5 GB dictionary, so it put my 8 GB video card and brand new 32 GB of DDR5 system RAM through a wringer. Rendering just one picture took about forty minutes when, for comparison, both SD 1.5 and SDXL need about a minute and a half. But it does replicate text fairly well, with minor typos if any and solid legibility. I also tried a web-based setup on the developers' site that's incomparably faster but still making typos (for example, I got a period-accurate white t-shirt with the phrase set in Cooper Black typeface, but it said "everything will be arright").
Also, from what I'm seeing, Flux not only messed up the number of fingers only once in a lot of pictures generated by multiple people, but can also, finally, draw guns correctly, something that annoyed me in Stable Diffusion for a long time. However, it's not that good at replicating art, being aggressively photorealistic no matter the prompt - I tried to ask the web-based setup for a replica of Rembrandt's style, something that the previous models did fairly well, got jack shit.
Also, a curious thing: I tried the Glurb prompt, a streak of random nonsense that returned goblins in every previous version of Stable Diffusion no matter the specific model, and the web-based setup returned something much closer to people's attempts in Midjourney instead - meaning that the entire thing was rewritten from scratch and not based on any previous version.

More AI Stuff — It's All About Energy, Part 2: Images.
Generated with Midjourney In Part 1, I used three different Large Language Models (LLMs) to explore the cost differential between traditional searches (i.e., a Google search) and AI-assisted searches. And by ‘cost,’ I mean both monetary and energy costs, although they are interconnected. The models were Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Claude. In this post, I address the energy cost associated with…

I feel like this Molly Crabapple quote is useful and great but needs the qualifier of “under capitalism." Which is the reality we currently exist with sadly. But... I also believe that in a world without capitalism the ethics of using an AI image generator would be completely different.
How much of the unethical nature of those image generators is tied up in their usage for the sole purpose of reducing employment of artists by massive corporations?
How much of the unethical nature of those image generators is tied up in their usage removing food from mouths and roofs from over heads so that the wealthy can become even more wealthy?
And if capitalism were a thing of memory, relegated to the dustbin of history, and everyone's basic needs were met in full, would it still be unethical or at least unethical to the same extreme degree?
If an artist could give birth to what their heart sings of without fear of increasing the precarity they and their families experience... if they could just exist and create without their creative output being intrinsically tied to their ability to continue living, I don't think that would be the case.
We DO currently live under a capitalistic system so many reading this may wonder what the point of the ethical distinction I'm making is. The distinction is that simply saying, "AI image generators are unethecal" lets our capitalistic system off the hook for being the reason for it being unethical.
Qualifying that original statement with the words, "under capitalism" makes clear that it's the fault of capitalism for AI art generators developing at the pace they have and with the CLEAR current use-case of "deskilling, disempowering, and replacing real human artists".
If there weren't a benefit to capital in creating these AI image generators in the way they have been created, they would've never been created like this at all. I believe that in the currently fictional anticapitalist world it would've been artists THEMSELVES who contributed their artwork to build AI models to be used in similar ways as a tool to quickly get visual references for specific poses at specific angles, and quick representations of design differences that could be considered while designing a character that the artist would then draw themselves.
All I'm saying is, capitalism, as usual, is at the center of this problem and we should make sure to point that out and center that idea when talking about it so that those less informed understand that, even if AI were to be regulated to effectively outlaw its current unethical usage, the fight would be nowhere close to finished.
If an artist can't spend their lives making important but unmarketable art due to the economic structure mandating poverty, homelessness, and starvation if they did... the fight must still continue.

#inky bytes#AI image generation#capitalism#believe in a world where artists can create important unmarketable art and that doing so is the natural way of things.
