I saw a post about "wow I can't believe you need ChatGPT to make a grocery list for you" and uh... confession: I am a grown ass adult who needs someone or *sigh* something to tell me what to eat. Maybe it's stupid how overwhelmed my brain gets with all I want to do vs all I need to do. Without direction, I eat "whatever's there" and my cholesterol winds up, well, where it is now, which is a huge problem I have been fighting for like 3 years...
But not ChatGPT. Frick ChatGPT. Frick AI. Besides the obvious environmental destruction, enabling the collapse of the workforce, hallucinations, etc another thing I hate on top of all of that is lack of control of the output. There are healthy foods I know I like, meals I actually have the patience to cook, but AI vomit doesn't know that nor do I care to educate it.
Way easier solution: use a list and a random number generator. Slick. Efficient. Customizable. I like Picker Wheel. I put like 50 meals I like on that list, edit the good choices to be bigger on the wheel, and just spin it 3-7 days in advance. Easy list. All things I like. AI can eat its own ass.
I know this still sounds lazy, but I guess the moral of the story is even lazy people don't need AI.
#ramble#ai is shit#i also wanna make my own app for full customizability but that's prolly a me thing#anti ai

I sat down and read Rampant AI Cheating Is Ruining Education Alarmingly Fast, & want to collect some thoughts on it:
Despite the headline, the article is pretty open about framing the widespread adoption of ChatGPT &co as a continuation of already available tools to help students cheat through university. And its not hard to see all of that as the product of massive institutional failures in making students feel like there is value in participating in their own education. Anyone who went through US public school can probably understand that there's a systematic apathy at work- schooling is presented as a way to meet minimum requirements to get students into the workforce. Unless you were lucky enough to have a teacher who was particularly motivated to keep you engaged, (shoutout to my AP world history teacher back in high school), its really easy to see tests & assignments as these burdens that you're fine to skip if you can. So students aren't primed to give a shit.
And I'm not going to say that higher education is inherently better in that regard, I have had some classes that definitely felt like I was just checking off boxes, but in theory a competent degree program will assume that you want to be there and will structure the work it hands you in such a way that it aids in your learning. Coming from a Humanities major, at least, the point of the term paper and the reading assignment is to get you to think critically about the subject(s), and to exercise your ability to evaluate and synthesize information and reach new conclusions.
So there's something uniquely horrifying to me about reading a case like this, where students who have been trained to see school as a chore are skipping over the work that enables them to learn. And this isn't an abstract, low-stakes scenario like cheating your way through a high school 5 paragraph essay about Hamlet- when the point of higher education existing at all is to imbue people with the specialized knowledge they need to get jobs in certain fields, cases like this mean that the people receiving these degrees and entering the workforce are going to struggle to do the actual work. What does the world look like, when the genocide scholars of tomorrow were kids who never bothered to read any of the texts they were given in school.
And beyond the workforce, what does it look like when voting-age individuals are being trained to outsource their ability to think critically? If you accept the idea that US fascism as it currently exists is defined by powerful people catering to a reactionary desire to view the world in extremely simplified terms- to find minority scapegoats for complex issues and demagogues to promise solutions to them- then how can we see this desire for simplicity, for being told what to do, as anything but an expression of that same fascist desire?
So while it's easy to want to pass this off as more of the same kind of cheating that has already existed in higher education, the fact of it being this widespread and the potential consequences of it do point to a need to take it more seriously, at a structural level, than the student who sneaks notes into a final. So far, the general response of universities to throw their hands up and leave this to individual professors to sort out seems absurd. But its hard to imagine what really can be done when this is ultimately the product of national-level schooling policy, and the big club-wielding ogre standing over this whole discussion is a much larger reality in which current admin education policy seems to see schools as a vehicle to pump out Hitlerjugend.
Idk what to do with all of this. The article comes off really bleak, and in general the increasing adoption of AI for personal use feels like we are on the cusp of a cultural shift that I really do not want to be a part of. Tell me that this vision of the world- one where you outsource your ability to connect with other human beings, where you move through the world with a sole view to optimize personal outcomes by building your own Cyrano de Bergerac- is one you want to live in!

Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) used artificial intelligence from Meta’s Llama model to comb through and analyze emails from federal workers.
Materials viewed by WIRED show that DOGE affiliates within the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) tested and used Meta’s Llama 2 model to review and classify responses from federal workers to the infamous “Fork in the Road” email that was sent across the government in late January.
The email offered deferred resignation to anyone opposed to changes the Trump administration was making to its federal workforce, including an enforced return-to-office policy, downsizing, and a requirement to be “loyal.” To leave their position, recipients merely needed to reply with the word “resign.” This email closely mirrored one that Musk sent to Twitter employees shortly after he took over the company in 2022.
Records show that Llama was deployed to sort through email responses from federal workers to determine how many accepted the offer. The model appears to have run locally, according to materials viewed by WIRED, meaning it’s unlikely to have sent data over the internet.
Meta and OPM did not respond to requests for comment from WIRED.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared alongside other Silicon Valley tech leaders like Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos at Trump’s inauguration in January, but little has been publicly known about his company’s tech being used in government. Because of Llama’s open-source nature, the tool can easily be used by the government to support Musk’s goals without the company’s explicit consent.
Soon after Trump took office in January, DOGE operatives burrowed into OPM, an independent agency that essentially serves as the human resources department for the federal government. The new administration’s first big goal for the agency was to create a government-wide email service, according to current and former OPM employees. Riccardo Biasini, a former Tesla engineer, was involved in building the infrastructure for the service that would send out the original “Fork in the Road” email, according to material viewed by WIRED and reviewed by two government tech workers.
In late February, weeks after the Fork email, OPM sent out another request to all government workers and asked them to submit five bullet points outlining what they accomplished each week. These emails threw a number of agencies into chaos, with workers unsure how to manage email responses that had to be mindful of security clearances and sensitive information. (Adding to the confusion, it has been reported that some workers who turned on read receipts say they found that the responses weren’t actually being opened.) In February, NBC News reported that these emails were expected to go into an AI system for analysis. While the materials seen by WIRED do not explicitly show DOGE affiliates analyzing these weekly “five points” emails with Meta’s Llama models, the way they did with the Fork emails, it wouldn’t be difficult for them to do so, two federal workers tell WIRED.
“We don’t know for sure,” says one federal worker on whether DOGE used Meta’s Llama to review the “five points” emails. “Though if they were smart they’d reuse their code.”
DOGE did not appear to use Musk’s own AI model, Grok, when it set out to build the government-wide email system in the first few weeks of the Trump administration. At the time, Grok was a proprietary model belonging to xAI, and access to its API was limited. But earlier this week, Microsoft announced that it would begin hosting xAi’s Grok 3 models as options in its Azure AI Foundry, making the xAI models more accessible in Microsoft environments like the one used at OPM. This potentially, should they want it, would enable Grok as an option as an AI system going forward. In February, Palantir struck a deal to include Grok as an AI option in the company’s software, which is frequently used in government.
Over the past few months, DOGE has rolled out and used a variety of AI-based tools at government agencies. In March, WIRED reported that the US Army was using a tool called CamoGPT to remove DEI-related language from training materials. The General Services Administration rolled out “GSAi” earlier this year, a chatbot aimed at boosting overall agency productivity. OPM has also accessed software called AutoRIF that could assist in the mass firing of federal workers.

Predicting Employee Attrition: Leveraging AI for Workforce Stability
Employee turnover has become a pressing concern for organizations worldwide. The cost of losing valuable talent extends beyond recruitment expenses—it affects team morale, disrupts workflows, and can tarnish a company's reputation. In this dynamic landscape, Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerges as a transformative tool, offering predictive insights that enable proactive retention strategies. By harnessing AI, businesses can anticipate attrition risks and implement measures to foster a stable and engaged workforce.
Understanding Employee Attrition
Employee attrition refers to the gradual loss of employees over time, whether through resignations, retirements, or other forms of departure. While some level of turnover is natural, high attrition rates can signal underlying issues within an organization. Common causes include lack of career advancement opportunities, inadequate compensation, poor management, and cultural misalignment. The repercussions are significant—ranging from increased recruitment costs to diminished employee morale and productivity.
The Role of AI in Predicting Attrition
AI revolutionizes the way organizations approach employee retention. Traditional methods often rely on reactive measures, addressing turnover after it occurs. In contrast, AI enables a proactive stance by analyzing vast datasets to identify patterns and predict potential departures. Machine learning algorithms can assess factors such as job satisfaction, performance metrics, and engagement levels to forecast attrition risks. This predictive capability empowers HR professionals to intervene early, tailoring strategies to retain at-risk employees.
Data Collection and Integration
The efficacy of AI in predicting attrition hinges on the quality and comprehensiveness of data. Key data sources include:
Employee Demographics: Age, tenure, education, and role.
Performance Metrics: Appraisals, productivity levels, and goal attainment.
Engagement Surveys: Feedback on job satisfaction and organizational culture.
Compensation Details: Salary, bonuses, and benefits.
Exit Interviews: Insights into reasons for departure.
Integrating data from disparate systems poses challenges, necessitating robust data management practices. Ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and privacy is paramount to building reliable predictive models.
Machine Learning Models for Attrition Prediction
Several machine learning algorithms have proven effective in forecasting employee turnover:
Random Forest: This ensemble learning method constructs multiple decision trees to improve predictive accuracy and control overfitting.
Neural Networks: Mimicking the human brain's structure, neural networks can model complex relationships between variables, capturing subtle patterns in employee behavior.
Logistic Regression: A statistical model that estimates the probability of a binary outcome, such as staying or leaving.
For instance, IBM's Predictive Attrition Program utilizes AI to analyze employee data, achieving a reported accuracy of 95% in identifying individuals at risk of leaving. This enables targeted interventions, such as personalized career development plans, to enhance retention.
Sentiment Analysis and Employee Feedback
Understanding employee sentiment is crucial for retention. AI-powered sentiment analysis leverages Natural Language Processing (NLP) to interpret unstructured data from sources like emails, surveys, and social media. By detecting emotions and opinions, organizations can gauge employee morale and identify areas of concern. Real-time sentiment monitoring allows for swift responses to emerging issues, fostering a responsive and supportive work environment.
Personalized Retention Strategies
AI facilitates the development of tailored retention strategies by analyzing individual employee data. For example, if an employee exhibits signs of disengagement, AI can recommend specific interventions—such as mentorship programs, skill development opportunities, or workload adjustments. Personalization ensures that retention efforts resonate with employees' unique needs and aspirations, enhancing their effectiveness.
Enhancing Employee Engagement Through AI
Beyond predicting attrition, AI contributes to employee engagement by:
Recognition Systems: Automating the acknowledgment of achievements to boost morale.

Excerpt from this story from RMI:
Today’sUS electrical grid looks less like an organized grid and more like an unfinished puzzle. Fortunately, as we plan for growing power demand, RMI emerges as a leader in the pursuit of solutions. With near-term stopgaps to optimize existing grid infrastructure and long-term solutions to grow the grid, build workforce capacity, and promote policy that encourages transmission planning among utilities, RMI is putting the pieces together.
The US grid faces incredible challenges. Industry forecasts predict that electricity demand will grow significantly, driven by AI data centers, industrial expansion, and the rise of electric vehicles and heat pumps. Fortunately, on the generation side, vast numbers of clean energy projects have asked to connect to the grid to help meet any rise in demand. Unfortunately, sluggish interconnection processes are delaying the urgently needed generation, with more than 2.6 terawatts (TW) of clean energy projects languishing in the interconnection traffic jam.
That far exceeds the 1.25 TW of electricity generation currently on the US grid. Why the long wait? New projects looking to connect to the grid must undergo a series of complex impact studies before they can connect. This can take up to five years. There is also a lack of electric transmission to carry the power from clean energy projects to where that energy will be used. Simply put, the model is inefficient and not designed for the energy transition. But RMI is helping change that.
Maximizing Grid Efficiency: RMI is working with partners to leverage cutting-edge grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) to streamline interconnection capacity now. GETs are innovative technologies that act as energy efficiency solutions for the grid. They can adjust the carrying capacity of transmission lines to reflect real-time conditions, re-route power around congested areas, and optimize power flows. We’re working with utilities and businesses in PJM, the largest grid operator in the country, to modernize and expedite interconnection procedures, a vital step in the journey toward a sustainable energy future. We have published or contributed to multiple reports on interconnection and GETs, providing evidence for the value of GETs in enhancing interconnection and transmission planning at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the White House, and in PJM stakeholder meetings to make real changes.
Connecting Clean Energy to the Grid Faster and Cheaper: The lengthy interconnection process slows the expansion of our energy systems during a crucial time for growth. But utilities can bypass the process by siting new clean generation at the same point of interconnection as existing or retiring generators. Using the existing fossil assets’ interconnection rights can cut the time down to less than one year. This clean repowering, or “the express lane of energy reinvestment,” offers the potential for 250 GW of new renewable energy projects without transmission upgrades and translates to an average savings of US$12.7 billion a year for the next ten years. New RMI research and analysis show the interconnection processes and Inflation Reduction Act incentives that enable this opportunity and the geographies with the most potential.
Planning Power Transmission: On May 13, 2024, FERC released Order 1920, a landmark rulemaking requiring each of the transmission planning regions in the United States to undergo long-term transmission planning. Order 1920 tackles regulatory hurdles that are slowing the deployment of transmission lines needed to deliver affordable, reliable electricity and prevent power outages as energy demand increases. RMI’s articles, submitted comments, and presentations helped influence this transformational policy.
