What if instead of Simon and Wilhelm joining Sara and Felice on their little road trip at the end, it's Stella, Fredrika and Madison?

Canon divergence starts when the girls are showing up with their suitcases, ready to leave and Felice tells them she doesn't want to go and after the first protest they actually really talk for once and then they all decide to not go to NYC either but instead go travel together in Sara's old car. There's a bit of apprehension at first from both sides but a willingness for things to be better again and during the trip they get to reconcile with Sara and learn and grow more and rebuild their friendships or even deepen them and meanwhile Stella and Fredrika also figure out their new sorta relationship on this journey to "anywhere".

An incomplete list of YR fics I want to read without necessarily having to write them myself

Stella and Fredrika after Hillerska, lovers to exes to friends again. They end up at different schools and try to a distance relationship and it’s disastrous. But they also grow a lot while apart from one another and reconnect in new ways.

Fredrika turns out to be aromantic. Like it takes her a while to figure things out, but she realizes a lot of her romantic notions are traditional because That’s How Romance Works, right?

Hillerska reopens and Henry and Walter and Alexander are the third years now. They all have different ideas of what leadership looks like and try to run things. Alexander has some residual emotions to resolve after what happened to him his first year.

Felice goes to school in another country after Hillerska closes. She develops her cooking skills but also tries out new hobbies. Maybe a contact sport?

Felice’s parents won’t fund her restaurant idea so she starts out doing a food truck or a kiosk and having fun with it. Maybe Wilhelm helps as he tries to figure out what he wants in life.

Adult Felice, wanting to get away from the big city after a breakup, returns to Bjärstad to start a tearoom or cafe. Rosh is a divorced mom with a gender non-conforming kid now, and she and Felice fall for one another. Tropey but fun!

But also, more immediate post-canon fic where Felice and Ayub date and Ayub treats her right but you know they also navigate stuff.

Turns out Nils and August had a first year situationship they conveniently memory holed.

Sometime post-canon, Nils and August end up in a situationship of sorts. Possibly combined with the above fic somehow.

Hear me out but… I bet someone could write an interesting Sara/Vincent fic. Especially in a way that explores their experiences of ADHD.

But also I want a fic where August is late-diagnosed with ADHD.

Madison backstory that actually develops some of the jokey bits of her personality (only speaking English, witchiness, etc) in a deeper way.

Fic where Maddie has two moms or two dads. Possibly combined with the previous ideas.

AU where Sara and Simon are in a folk band or do classical music together or something because pop star Simon really isn’t my thing nope not at all.

Dark fic where it turns out Kristina’s “unfortunate romance” was her cousin Carl Johan. August (and maybe Wilhelm) find out. Family discussions are had. Everything is very Greek Tragedy.

Early 1900s historical AU where all the characters are girls and the Hillerska uniforms are sailor dresses.

August takes care of Rousseau and it fixes him somehow.

August repairs his relationship with his mother and sees his father with clearer eyes (allowing him to process his grief and complex trauma.)

Wilhelm gets addicted to pills in university, and Simon and August work together to get him help for his addiction, learning new things about one another in the process. (While Wilmon romance is part of the background to this story, it is not heavily centered, because I have had my fill of Wilmon romance and am not into it really.)

Crossover: University-aged Simon interviews Maribel Campoy from 45RPM about music and resistance to the Franco regime.

Crossover: Sara does something cool like write a book and is interviewed by Helen Norville of the Newsreader.

A five plus one fic exploring Sara’s possible hyperfixations after she leaves horses behind, and the plus one is her coming back to horses in some capacity but not the way she was into them before.

thoughts from a plane with zee! pt.3

hey hey! welcome to part 3 of thoughts from a plane with zee! I think its a little shorter than the other two, but hopefully just as unhinged. Here's part 1 and part 2

anyway! part three:

Henry is a classically trained ballerina. He tells NO ONE. 

I’ve put this in fics before, but I definitely see Fredrika going into some sort of journalism when she’s older. All that gossip pays off somewhere. 

Still on Fredrika: we see her mom in canon so this can’t be true, but I so strongly see her as like a single-father’s daddy’s girl. Does that make sense? Like I feel it in my bones that she was raised by a single father and she ADORES him. 

Stella has horrible luck with travel to the point that she mostly flies private because she cannot handle another delayed flight without having a breakdown. 

I feel like Felice+her future partner and wilmon would go on skiing trips together and would take their kids to skiing lessons and stuff. Maybe Sara goes too?

The only thing August is good for is making kladdkaka and Simon finds it absolutely hilarious because it sounds like the Spanish word for shit. “The only thing he knows how to do well is bake shit!” (Brought to you by me speaking mostly Spanish for the last week and a half) 

Madison only refers to the United Sates as “MURICA 🇺🇸🏈🦅”

Erik vibes as a grey tshirt, plaid pj pants night time wearer 

Walter is an avid Eurovision watcher and voter 

Every once in a while Vincent will start randomly thinking of king fu panda and he’ll tell Nils, and then proceed to defend the movie fiercely when Nils calls it stupid. 

Rosh is a “I’ll crash in the couch” person but Ayub is an “I’ll bring my own air mattress” kind of person

Music teacher Simon this, pop star Simon that. Politician Simon. Why aren’t we considering political activist Simon? 

Wilhelm prefers night flights because he likes to look at the city lights. 

I feel like Felice watches love island but can’t do love is blind 

Simon would absolutely fuck a bitch up for even daring to look in Wilhelm’s direction. Like absolutely. “MY boyfriend? You’re looking at MY boyfriend?”

I fear I would not have been able to do the fish thing if I was in Simon’s position. Like the first fish I ever had I named Margret and that is NOT sexy. it would have killed the mood. We would’ve needed to debrief

Nils “doesn’t believe” in Canada. No one knows what this means. He just says he doesn’t believe in it. 

In continuation: Madison has tried to argue with him about Canada multiple times because “IT NOT LIKE JESUS NILS, YOU CANT JUST NOT BELIEVE IN A LANDMASS!” He does not relent. 

this last one I'm taking out because it was a Song of Achilles reference but I'm actually going to turn it into a little fic for @youngroyals-events YR week coming up! The book prompt obviously lmao

[settling back down, feet kicking in the air] okie tell me about Erik and fanon :>

hi milo :'] i wrote half of this sporadically while at work today. and now it's 1200 words of me ranting about Erik bc i have 0 self control :']

you ask and i DO have Thoughts but it's so funny cus like. there's barely even a canon to compare him to. so it's not like I can really do my normal thing and compare his specific behavior in canon to what can be seen in fanon cus he's only in like 4 scenes and he doesn't even talk in one of them djajfjjajd I've also 100% spoken about this before!!

that said, the Thoughts persist.

and i think where it comes from is how real and flawed and varied the other characters in the show are and like. the fandom loves to make Erik this perfect older brother who is always 100% there for Wille and will keep his secrets and will support him in being with Simon and will stand up to the Royal Court if they ever say anything mean about Wille or propose anything other than exactly what Wille asks them to do. but I genuinely just cannot see that being an accurate portrayal of Erik. it’s such a sanitized character compared to the rest of the characters in the series and it is such a disservice.

a lot of the small things we DO know about Erik show that he is definitely flawed and is certainly not the perfect person that he's often written to be, ex. laughing at August's joke about Felice and pushing the ideals of the court on Wilhelm (re: both when Wille first starts at Hillerska and when they're talking on the phone in Parents Day). and further, he's not even the perfect prince, re: the scandal with the OnlyFans girl! 

the thing with this one though is that I completely understand WHY people write Erik this way. like, i get. i do. we almost only ever see Erik through Wilhelm’s tinted glasses. Wilhelm thought Erik was perfect, so we see all of his perfections and none of his flaws. he was the perfect prince, he never got in trouble, he was amazing at what he did, he didn't need help, he was a natural, etc. 

but we learn slowly, from other people, that this was NOT the case! Erik was in a big scandal of his own (OnlyFans), Erik went to therapy, Erik struggled too. Not everything was easy for him the way Wilhelm seems to believe (and thus the way that we are usually framed to see it as well). we learn about his scandal from Stella and Fredrika and we learn about the therapy from Nils (at the same time Wilhelm does!). we never really have Wilhelm showing these flaws, or at least not in a way that makes them out to be flaws of Erik, but rather simply flaws of being royal (again, in reference to Erik pushing ideals of the court on Wilhelm). 

and this characterization goes even further than just the text: even knowing Erik wasn't perfect isn't enough, because the next issue is that people still want him to be perfect FOR Wilhelm. people are so desperate for Wilhelm to have someone who is part of his family who is on his side no matter what* that they'll ignore any hint that Erik WASN'T the Perfect Brother™ because it means they'd have to examine his relationship to Wilhelm and the comments he's made in favor of the Royal Court and face the idea that maybe Erik WOULDN'T have been on Wilhelm’s side at all, or at least not as strongly as they wish he was. which defeats the purpose that they are using him for. 

*(we're ignoring the Queen Kristina Thoughts for this cus that is a WHOLE OTHER RANT and i want to keep this on topic lmao)

but it makes no sense to me, personally, to see Erik portrayed this way!! because what evidence do we have to support it? yes, i believe Erik was probably a really good brother, but that doesn't mean he was without flaws or that he'd be on Wilhelm's side or support him 100% without question. and these are not actually contradicting statements. 

i have siblings. i've been emotionally and mentally abused by one of my siblings. i’ve been offered a place to hide when things at home were tense, a place to live if i needed it, by one of my siblings. i know what it's like to have siblings who are BAD siblings and GOOD siblings. and i know that humans as a category can't ACTUALLY be divided into good and bad so easily. my sibling who abused me is also the only one who will genuinely let me rant about my fandoms and actually listen and give a shit about what I'm saying. my siblings who would take me in if something happened have said some of the most hurtful things, and have made comments that still upset me to even think about for more than 2 seconds. 

so i believe Erik was a good brother. but i still don't think he would've been fully on Wilhelm's side, especially during the video scandal. and again these are not actually contradicting statements. 

i think it would have been hard for Erik to be torn between the clear pain Wilhelm was in and his duty, but Erik is probably a lot more like the Queen than people want to admit, and i think in the situation, they would have had similar thoughts. (ie. denying that it was him would be the best approach)

so to see almost every fic have him immediately disregard every piece of training he would've gone through, ignore protocol, cover up things and not report potentially HUGE problems to his mother, i don't know. i read them, and Ii still love them, but there will always be that sense of a disconnect from reality that i'll have to have in order to. because what do we really know of Erik?

he was a good brother. he was a good crown prince. he followed along with protocol, got into scandals of his own, covered them up. he was close with August, laughed at his sexist jokes, seemed to get along well with the people at Hillerska in general. he tells Wilhelm to suck it up and put on a fake face, “pretend to be someone else”, and do his duty.

idk. like i said, i have so many thoughts on the portrayal of Erik in fanon, but even then so much of what i say is also just my own personal thoughts and biases because we never really got to understand him as a character the way we have the others. so genuinely take this with a grain of salt, because i can say all i want to say but at the end of the day, it’s just my own opinion on how i think he would be. and i don’t really have much canon material to look at and pull from. so again, this isn’t really like my other “fanon vs. canon” thoughts where i’m just interested in comparing the changes. this is more of a… frustrated rant at what i perceive to be mischaracterizations.

Haha no, I would not. Simply because outside Wilmon, I don't ship any other ship in Young Royals. I'm not a big shipper, as you know, and one ship per fandom is very enough for me (there are some special case).

Especially since Young Royals is a show about the love story of Wilhelm and Simon, they have my full attention. I would be happy if Stella of Fredrika became canon, but I wouldn't write a fic for them. Wouldn't mind including them in a Wilmon fic tho!

4.  the fanfic you would recommend for somebody not in the fandom

The Darkest Little Paradise by @yourdemiurge the characters are all quite different than in the show and you don't need to have prior knowledge of the show but you can still enjoy the murder mystery and find the relationships and characters very compelling without knowing how they are in canon

14. your choice of fanfic for each season

i don't really know how to answer this...am i supposed to name two fics or what type i like in general? i'm so bad at choosing things

20. your « not Wilmon » favorite ship / couple

i don't really think i have a favourite that sounds bad i do like that they introduced the idea of fredrika and stella in s2 and i enjoy henry and walter whether it's platonic or not

angst always does that count as a trope?

actually you could say i didn't expect to like the entire royalty trope of the show as much bc i've never really cared about or read fics with royalty but now i actually prefer yr fics where wille is still the crown prince but non royal AUs can be very nice too

not about me but someone commented on my own fic that they don't usually read and like omegaverse (which i understand, me neither tbh) but mine changed their mind about it and they rlly liked it and that was one of the biggest compliments i ever got

i do, i don't do it enough tho. sometimes i have this really big urge to leave a comment and when i do they're usually novel sized and because they always take me so long to write i don't do it as much as i should

yes, it depends on what type it is but it often inspires me to write my own something

6. Characters you have ace, aro, or queerplatonic headcanons for

Ooh, a fun one! My aro and ace headcanons migrate a bit, depending on the fic. But I’ll list a few that I like:

I sometimes love the idea of aspec Felice (I have written her with multiple different sexual orientations though.)

I enjoy @heliza24’s aroace Ayub and @starvalisedham’s.

I adore @sflow-er’s ace Henry, in all his iterations.

I sometimes headcanon Maddie and/or Fredrika as alloaro. Fredrika in particular would be a fun character to write as aromantic and closeted even to herself, because she puts forward such a “traditional” idea of love at first that make the romantic clichés are her only frame of references? And then she hooks up with her best friend because of course she loves her best friend, right? I’d love to read a fic where Stella and Fredrika navigate their way through that.

On the queerplatonic side of things, @heliza24 and I essentially ended up writing Sara and Wilhelm as a QPR in Heart and Homeland, and we are FOREVER BITTER that the show only allowed them one brief exchange of dialogue.

16. A song that reminds you of a secondary character or pairing

Gotta say, “It’s Alright” by Dar Williams has got some strong August vibes. Shout out to “Rearrange the Art” by Sarah Jarosz and “Anchor to the World Below” by Freezepop as saraugust songs, also.

20. Dream fanfic about a secondary character and/or pairing that you’d love to read but don’t want to write yourself

Echoing @sflow-er’s exact words here: “I'd love to read a long, nuanced fic focused on Sar(au)gust in a canon-compliant or canon-divergent (but not full AU) setting, with a good-faith take on their individual characters and them as a pairing.”

With the add-on of: I’d love to read that kind of fic for them that takes their story in a direction I haven’t thought of! Obviously I have lots of saraugust fics swimming in my head but I’d love something multichapter where I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen next because I didn’t write it. Preferably something not too heavy on the tropey romance—I get that tropes are some of the building blocks of stories, but I’d love to see it fleshed out with good, solid characterization.

Bonus points if there’s Dark Academia vibes. Saraugust and Dark Academia go together so well.

Alternately: an AU where August is doing competitive figure skating and it’s slowly burning him out, and meanwhile Sara takes up skating as a hobby because she’s unable to do horses for some reason and she’s not great at it at first until August can teach her things, and they end up skating together. A friend wrote a snippet of that for me once and I was left with an ABSOLUTE CRAVING.

@simonsapelsin I adore your secret crush AU! Somehow, my mind just went more Post-canon (?) and came up with these images of a Hillerska school trip:

Simon, wearing his slightly too large second-hand snow suit that Linda got him, initially scoffs at his classmates' preppy ski wear. It takes him only one day though to be persuaded by Wille to wear at least one of his boyfriend's sets of high-quality thermal underwear, because as it turns out, those actually do work better at keeping you warm. And frankly, anything that keeps Simon from freezing on this windy, snow-covered mountain takes priority over any personal convictions of his.

Speaking of sportswear, Maddie is the only one in the group who's outright refused to put on skis, and has brought her snowboarding gear instead. She clearly has a blast going down the mountain - unlike Felice, who by day 2 decides to ditch the group and instead organizes private transportation to take her and Sara to the chiquest boutiques in the nearby town. Fredrika doesn't join them, as she prefers to spend the day shamelessly flirting with the male skiing instructor that has been hired for the group. Stella tags along, growing increasingly sulky, until it turns out that the skiing instructor is not only amazingly attractive but also very gay, and it is Fredrika's turn to be the one sulking, and Stella's to try and cheer her up.

By day 3, Simon slowly does get the hang of it, and they have loads of fun - all except for Henry, who falls and has to witness one of his skis taking off without him. Wille and some of the others help him dig through the deep snow next to the slope to try and find it, while Simon, who is watching them from a seated position, alternates between snorting and rolling his eyes at them. They give up eventually and Henry ends up having to hobble down all the way to the next ski lift station, where he spends an exorbitant amount of money on a snowmobile that takes him back to their cabin (even more reason for Simon to scoff at him).

Speaking of ski lifts, Simon hates the snow tow with a passion and refuses to use it again after his jacket got tangled in it once and he was almost dragged along with it (of course, Wille came right to the rescue, but still, "That thing is a death trap, Wille!"). Simon does love the chair lift though, partly because it gives Wille and him some precious moments by themselves and partly because of the breathtaking view of the snowy mountain. It is kind of cold, but Simon has to admit that cuddling into each other, enjoying the warmth of their embrace while watching the snow-covered fir and spruce trees pass by below them is more romantic than he expected. If it leads to some pretty intense making out that almost has them forget they're 30 meters above ground, nobody has to know...

Simon's favorite part by far is the evenings though, when they get to curl up - hot chocolate in hand, blanket around their shoulders - on the sofas in front of the fire place. Granted, Henry is pretty obnoxious as he goes on and on about the celebrities he (supposedly) met on his family's last skiing trip to St Moritz, and Walter's unwarranted wisdom on how to woo girls isn't much better. But it's all worth it if it means Simon gets to spend the evening leaning against Wille's chest, feeling his hands gently massing his back and neck, his arms snaking around his waist... It's the definition of cozy and safe, and with the way Wille gets increasingly touchy and clingy as the night progresses, Simon couldn't be happier.

As for Wille, we know what his favorite parts of this trip are: Simon, as he grabs Wille's arms trying to steady himself. Simon's curls, as they glisten in the sunlight reflected off the snow around them. Simon's voice, as his melodious laughter and "stop it, you idiot!" travel down the mountain... Just. Simon. Having his boy by his side, being careless and free, even if just for a moment. 💜
