COD nights were always fun because it meant those were the times where the boys could get together, crash random lobbies, fish for the low skilled ones and then heavily level up their accounts.

Although tonight it looks like not a lot of people were free to troll or be trolled. Platform wise and party wise — tonight, it was just Eren, Connie and Jean on mic.

It’d gotten to that point of the game where no one really wanted to play anymore and so they were all idly waiting in their own party lobby.

Boredly scrolling through random Instagram filters and taking pictures with them, Eren sighed as he aimlessly sent them to the groupchat.

He hadn’t thought anything of it, usually the guys would open them and just heart emote it — or if they were feeling silly, use a poop or thumbs down emoji. But since he was on the mic already, Connie voiced his opinion aloud.

“Those filters make you look like yo’ mama!”

Not thinking much of it, Eren didn’t concentrate on the remark, but it’s when he heard Jean snickering in the back that he leaned forwards in his chair.

“Wait, Con. You talking ‘bout me?”

“Yeah, you! That shit you sent into the chat with all them filters on.”

Jean started laughing again but this time in joint with Connie. The two of them were cackling greasy laughs as their volume levels wobbled in and out.

“Awoogaaaa! Hellooo Mrs. Jaeger!” He wolfed into Eren’s ears.

The brunette’s face scrunched in annoyance.

Oh, so they were on piss tonight?

With a kiss of his teeth, Eren fixed his mic closer to his mouth so that his next words would come out crunchy on the other end.

“Ayo, at least I look like her. You don’t look like any of your folks. You sure you not adopted?”

Suddenly, the laughter ceased. With a grin on his face, Eren nodded as he sat back in his seat.

Yeah, that’ll teach em, he thinks.

However, Connie’s next words had dampened the mood even more.

“Bro, that shit ain’t cool. I don’t look like them because I am adopted.”

Eren’s face dropped.

There was an acute silence on the party channel.

A low “Fuuuuuck…” was heard in the background on Jean’s end. His channel went flat after the click of a mute button.

Slightly gobsmacked, Eren quickly laid a hand over his mouth before uncovering it and talking a lot more softly into his microphone piece.

“Ah. Shit, dawg. I’m sorry, I didn’t know—”

“Ha! Gotcha! I’m not adopted, bitch!”

Connie was once again bellowing within the chat. His laughter would have been infectious had he not tricked Eren into feeling sympathy for him with priorly insulting him and his mother.

Rolling his eyes, Eren retorted back.

“That’s not something to joke about though.”

“But that’s equally as reason why you can’t go round saying people look loaned.” He said back.

Eren made a confused face towards his television screen but to no one in particular.

“Loaned?! That’s an even worse way to put it!”

A click sounded within the party call which indicated the unmuting of Jean’s channel.

“Adopted people aren’t ‘loaned’, Connie. They’re legally under that guardian’s care as much as a biological child would be.”

Quickly accommodating to Jean’s admission of serious tone, Eren dropped the humorous attitude before bartering on his friend’s side.

“Yeah, you’re probably thinking of fostering. That’s the one where it’s just temporary stay.” Eren finished.

Thankfully understanding the change in tone, Connie’s voice sounded much lower as he hummed in understanding the concept.

“Ah, I get it.”

There was a comfortable silence for a few seconds. As party leader, Eren took the initiative to plunge the group into a lobby search without clarifying seeing as nothing else was being said.

Just as the game was loading in, Connie quietly said into the mic:

“You still look like your mama though.”

While Riccetto and Alduccio are at Amerigo's funeral, Lenzetta waits for them bored under a low wall, in the place where Elina works. Elina is on the roof looking after her youngest son, while Lenzetta does not even pay attention to her on purpose; he watches some children playing in the small park nearby, and, to stop his boredom, he insults the older boys playing football, and gets involved in a game between toddlers, protecting one and insulting and frightening the others. Lenzetta first thinks back to his friends who are keeping him waiting, and then to what he has done that made him run away from home; he is afraid of his older brother, and of course of the extent of the thing he has done. Something morally abject and extremely stupid that Lenzetta regrets and is ashamed of, but on second thought, since both he and his brother are criminals, what do they care about morality? He describes it more as a matter of honour for a small trifle.

Not even Lenzetta can understand how he could have done such thing: he gives himself the excuse that he was confused by the beatings and violence he received in prison, at the Regina Coeli adult penitentiary, since he is already 18 years old. An adult inmate inside the prison in fact tries to molest him, but Lenzetta is saved by the fame of his older brother, ‘Lenzetta number 1’, the most famous thief in the prison, and so, although young and attractive, the boy manages to gain respect accordingly. After a few weeks he was released from prison on parole and returned home, where his mother immediately got angry at him; Lenzetta did not listen to her, and went to the ‘Green Carpet Bar’, also called the ‘Stabbing Bar’ to brag about being in adult prison with his peers and boys younger than him; then he returned home, completely drunk. Lenzetta slept in a small windowless room with his older brother. Around midnight, unable to sleep and h0rny, he approached his older brother's bed and began to sing. The older brother woke up and, realising what was happening, pushed the Lenzetta away violently.

(In the uncensored version of the novel: Around midnight, unable to sleep and h0rny, he approaches his elder brother's bed and makes heavy sexual remarks about his brother who is sleeping half-naked and open-mouthed. They arrive in Amba Aradam Street around sunset, at a workshop with a yard full of iron pipes and other materials, which Lenzetta intends to rob; but it is still daylight, and they need a way to transport all that material. Alduccio suggests renting a cart from Remo the ragman at Maranella, which is a long way from there, but he immediately becomes furious because Lenzetta refuses this option. Lenzetta goes against him because he thinks the place he suggests is too far to walk and the tram ticket costs too much for their poor finances, and Alduccio turns completely red in the face from anger; meanwhile Riccetto watches them argue, having fun. Alduccio finally proposes to earn money in a particular way, which Lenzetta does not immediately understand at first, but which Riccetto grasps instead. Aldo leads them to the square Porta San Giovanni, which is almost deserted at the moment, and they position themselves next to a low wall. Lenzetta lies down disinterestedly on it, Riccetto sits on the edge, and the only one interested and attentive remains Alduccio, leaning against the low wall seductively as he looks around for ‘someone’. Lenzetta and Riccetto ‘suddenly’ get very thirsty and leave, taking as long as possible at the fountain; it is implied that a man has approached, and Alduccio has joined him, and out of embarrassment or respect the other two have left. On their return, Alduccio has already finished with the customer, who has given him three piotte (300 lires), but Alduccio, although he displays a rare cheerfulness, seems reluctant to admit what has really happened. First he says that one gave him this money for nothing, then he retracts saying that the man just touched him quickly. The other two want nothing to do with it, and don't ask.

The three boys finally, happy and noisy, go by tram to the Maranella, to Remo the ragman to borrow the cart. The shrewd and clever Lenzetta talks happily with Remo, an elderly man with a rags shop, to borrow his tricycle with cart; the latter accepts, on the condition that, as payment for this help, he will be sold everything the boys would carry on the chart. The three boys take it in turns on the tricycle to pedal back to the workshop they had been eyeing, and they get there by nightfall. Alduccio stays outside on the tricycle to act as a lookout, while Lenzetta, who feels he is the leader of that expedition, and Riccetto, terrified by that feat, sneak inside the fence and into the workshop courtyard. Riccetto is wary, frightened, and the Lenzetta has to spur him on to be followed, but then, seeing the large quantity of iron and lead, they both gain confidence, and carry the load to the cart, where Alduccio also helps them. As they are loading, however, Lenzetta spots a figure at the end of the street: it is a rich young man from a good family, whom Lenzetta confronts aggressively to chase away. But the guy turns away only to shout cowardly that there are thieves. The three boys run away and take turns on the tricycle for a while, and reach the Appia Nuova road where, exhausted, they lie down in the middle of the road and playfully quarrel with the few passers-by. Then, calmer and stronger, Alduccio starts cycling again but gets the wheel of the tricycle stuck in the tram rail and breaks it. They need another cart.

Aldo stays to guard the scraps, angry, while Riccetto and Lenzetta again run back to the owner of the cart, but find his shop closed given the time, by now midnight. As they return to where they left Alduccio with a cart they took anyway , they find no one but an old man trying to hide an iron piece he's st3aling from their cart: Lenzetta turns red with rage, but with his usual hypocritical kindness asks the old man where he found that piece of metal. The old man replies that he is ‘helping’ their colleague (Aldo) by hiding the scraps, and the two boys together with the old man look for Alduccio, who has hidden in an alley, afraid that the police might see him.

Lenzetta and Riccetto, helped by the old man load the metal scraps onto the new cart, decide to give all the work to Aldo. Riccetto convinces Aldo to go ahead with the cart so as not to be noticed; Aldo unwillingly and protesting obeys anyway, and cautiously and contritely does as he is told. The two boys and the old man follow him from far behind, making fun of him and laughing at him, without poor Alduccio noticing. Meanwhile they strike up a conversation with the old man, who says he is going to steal some cabbages in a vegetable garden to feed his five daughters; at the mention of the daughters, Lenzetta and Riccetto take an exaggerated interest. Lenzetta proposes to dump Aldo, and sends Riccetto to perform this thankless task, also ordering him to return with the money. Riccetto joins his cousin, and after a brief discussion Alduccio leaves with the cart, alone.

Lenzetta, Riccetto and the old man go to a tavern, and Lenzetta insists on paying the old man for the wine (with Alduccio's money) and helping him with the cabbage harvest, all to be friends with him so he can have access to his five daughters. The man understood everything, but let the two boys do it anyway. After a short while and a few glasses of wine, the two young boys are already drunk, and they start talking about religion after discovering that the old man is religious. The two boys, however, do not seem to know even the basics of the Catholic religion. While Lenzetta is making one of his usual big loud scenes, something falls out of his trouser pocket onto the floor: it is the gun of one of the thugs at the Villa Borghese. Riccetto realises that it was Lenzetta who robbed him in his sleep, just as he robbed Caciotta and all the others. Lenzetta takes the gun back and hides it again, but both Riccetto and, above all, the elderly man, are shocked by this discovery. Lenzetta insists on seeing the photos of the man's daughters, who turns out, from his identity card, to be Antonio Bifoni. He finally finds the photos of the eldest daughters, and Riccetto and Lenzetta, speaking softly but not very cleverly, share between each other the two most beautiful daughters as any other object to steal and possess.

The three of them leave the tavern and go to the vegetable garden. The two boys, led by Mr Antonio, slip through a hole in the fence, amidst thick vegetation that hides the entrance, and notice how many fruits and vegetables are grown there. However, Mr Antonio only wants cabbages. He throws himself on the huge cabbages and chops them up, then shoves them into the sack he always carries around with a strange eagerness, which amuses the two young boys very much, who want to imitate him but badly, and then they start playing with the food. The man, unfortunately, is forced to put up with the games and the anguish of the two little boys, and he also accepts Lenzetta's whims and his thrusting words towards his daughters, asking whether they are engaged or not. The boys offer, only for personal gain, to carry the heavy sack full of cabbages, and Mr Antonio, too old to carry it himself, is forced to accept. When they arrive at the Borgata degli Angeli, where Mr Antonio lives with his family in a dirty, old building, he invites them up and the two willingly accept, since they are there just for that. Opening the door is a beautiful girl in her early twenties, clearly barely awake: as soon as she sees guests, however, she runs off to dress and comb her hair to make herself presentable. The girl's name is Nadia, and she is Antonio's eldest daughter. She is very shy and serious, and the two boys are immediately attracted to her. The Riccetto introduces himself as Claudio Mastracca, and the Lenzetta as Alfredo De Marzi. The house is a mess, and the youngest girls sleep in the kitchen, which is dirty and half-destroyed; Mr Antonio apologises for the disaster, and Lenzetta tries to make conversation, but both he and Riccetto are not used to talking in a decent way with adults, and only say inappropriate things. Mr Antonio proudly shows the stolen cabbages to his daughter Nadia, who reacts badly, however: she is embarrassed that her father has to steal to eat, and desperate that he is forced into this life. She runs away in tears. When she returns, pushed by her mother, she is still on the verge of tears, and Riccetto and Lenzetta, with their savage ways, instead of consoling her, make her feel worse. Then the other two daughters also show up, the second-born Luciana, more cunning and well-dressed, and the third-born, a red-haired, silent and shy girl of about sixteen. Lenzetta is pepper-red and so h8rny that he is unable to think anymore while Riccetto is kinder and more willing to help, telling Mr Antonio and his family not to worry too much about them, even when the family wants to offer them coffee but they say they ‘forgot the sugar’; in reality they are too poor to afford it. The two thugs leave, shaking hands with all the daughters, and especially the third daughter, who is completely silent and expressionless and does not even say goodbye. Riccetto aggressively threatens Lenzetta to give him the money stolen from Alduccio. Riccetto, pitying Mr Antonio's family situation, gives him a piotta and a half (150 lires) before leaving.

Some time has passed and now Riccetto frequents the Stabbing Pub, the one frequented by Lenzetta. Now Riccetto is playing a game to pretend to be a serious guy: with Lenzetta he has found an abandoned barn to sleep in, in a large building next to a flat with a locked door, and he has found a little job as a helper at the fish market, and he is even engaged to Mr Antonio's daughter, the quiet girl he calls ugly and treats poorly. Riccetto does not love her, and she does not love him; they do not interact except to keep up appearances, and each tries to spend as little time as possible with the other. Riccetto is so bored by this life that he invents arguments with his fiancée just to shout at her and beat her up, and then pretends he has no problem at the pub. The engagement for him is just an excuse to brag, to show how he is superior, better, more serious, now a grown-up, settled man who no longer has anything bad or childish on his mind; but it is all lies. Riccetto is still a petty thief, taking part in fights and quarrels, and now and then together with his friends he even robs the owner of the Bar della Pugnalata. Lenzetta and the other boys who have already been to Porta Portese (juvenile prison) already know the new ‘modern’ methods of education for bad boys like them; so they blame the bar owners for being too good to them, instead of blame themselves. Riccetto does not consider what he does amoral: in fact, the pay at his job is too low, and he considers theft the only way to survive, and now he also has to buy his fiancée a ring to make the engagement official.

So Riccetto, with Lenzetta, Alduccio and Lenzetta's friend called Lello, get organised to steal car parts and old irons to have enough money that month to have fun and buy whatever they want; this time they already have the cart. That night it rains and it is stormy, but the four boys, soaking wet and cold, continue their mission, in the same area where they had stolen metal a short time before; Riccetto remains outside with the cart to stand guard, Lello, cold and shivering, enters first with the sack and Lenzetta and Alduccio enter a nearby shed. Lello is surprised by a night watchman, who stops him. Alduccio and Lenzetta return with a sack full of cheese wheels, but seeing the night watchman have stopped Lello, the two boys also jump in to save their companion. The night watchman starts shouting and attracts the attention of some bakers in the area, who rush in; they catch Lenzetta, but Alduccio manages to escape.

He discards all pursuers and makes to climb over a lower gate, but in his haste his shoe slips on the rain-wet iron and a sharp gate bar pierces his thigh from side to side. He nevertheless manages to jump over to the other side, and the Riccetto, who was waiting for him, helps him to escape; the pursuers, seeing that the boy is badly wounded, so as not to take the blame, let him go, pretending that nothing happened. Alduccio is bleeding profusely and the Riccetto ties his leg with his tank-top to stop the bleeding, but the wound is so serious that the Riccetto is forced to take him to the hospital, and leaves him at the door. The Riccetto runs away, terrified and demoralised, wandering all night in the storm at the thought that his collegues, one in hospital and two in prison, might snitch on him.

At dawn, Riccetto is still walking around the city. He is pale, weak and hungry, semi-conscious and almost on the verge of fainting. Instinctively he goes to the market, but it is too early; the little boy is cold, shivering and barely able to walk, but he encounters a garbage truck on which two men are working who seem to need help. Riccetto is so desperate that he offers to help them load and unload the rubbish cans, while the two mock him for his weakness and obvious hunger. The truck unloads in the countryside, an open dump, and the Riccetto and another boy stand there rummaging through the rubbish, desperate for a bit of garbage food that was thrown away. The other boy is more experienced and more at ease, while Riccetto can no longer keep doing this: under the scorching sun, the stinking rubbish and hunger, Riccetto's eyes grow misty and dim, and he almost faints. Drooling and almost unable to control his body any longer, by now with reduced vision and red and green spots in his field of vision, the young boy leaves, barely able to walk. He goes back to the market street, which has finally opened its doors, and desperately steals a few apples and a peach, which he eats by hiding in a small alley like a mouse. But it is not enough, and so he goes back to the market, where he smells cheese: he cannot stop himself from stealing a slice of gruyère cheese, but the owner of the cheese cart notices him. The violent huge man grabs the little boy by the collar of his shirt and hits him twice in the face. Riccetto reacts by throwing a few weak punches at him, but the violent, dangerous and evil man beats him so violently that the other salesmen have to stop him from punching and kicking the little boy to death. Riccetto, bleeding and bruised, his face gaunt and his mind lacking in clarity, is forced to hand back the cheese. Staggering back to the building where he sleeps, he finally reaches the barn after 400 steps. He is so tired that he is no longer lucid, and he pays no attention to the open door beside the barn, which is usually closed. He faints on the floor.

Shortly afterwards he is woken up by strong kicks to the stomach: it's two policemen, called by the doorman of the building when he saw the poor boy enter and go up the stairs. During the night the flat next door was burgled, and the cops blame him. They take him away, weak and bleeding and staggering, and throw him in the Porta Portese juvenile prison for three years; he will be released in the spring of 1950.

CHARACTERS:

Alfredo De Marzi, known as ‘Lenzetta’: a no-good from the Acqua Bullicante, who ran away from home after molesting his older brother. He is 18 years old, but looks much younger, like a boy of Riccetto's age, if not younger. He is described as attractive, cunning and hypocritical. He loves being the centre of attention, being the leader of the group and bossing others around. He is a liar and a profiteer, potentially capable of dangerous and exaggerated acts.

Claudio Mastracca known as ‘Riccetto’: He is a 15-year-old street thief. Although he has grown up for several years on the streets and has become more cunning and shrewd, he still reveals a generous and emotional soul, and a keen empathy that other thieves do not have. He is still a show-off who loves to brag, and even goes so far as to get engaged to a random girl just to look better than the others.

Alduccio: Riccetto's cousin. He has dark hair and dark, shiny eyes, full lips and a vague shadow of teenage stubble on his face. He often sells himself by the streets, and because of his great beauty he is much sought after by many clients, all men older than him. He is almost always angry and in a bad mood; only rarely is he seen cheerful. Although he has such a hot temper, he always do what he's told to do and is much more serious and cautious than his peers.

Mr Antonio: An old man, with five daughters and a beautiful wife, is unemployed and does not have enough money to feed everyone, so he is forced to steal cabbages in someone else's garden. He is clever and knows how to use the situation to his advantage, but he does not demand too much, and he knows his limits. He loves his family. He has five daughters: Nadia the shy and serious first-born, Luciana the more expansive second-born, the expressionless red-haired third-born who becomes Riccetto's girlfriend, and two younger children.
