lysa and lyanna are, in a sense, two sides of the same coin—both victims of their father’s ambitions (and their society) who share some very important parallels: they dared to get pregnant out of wedlock. they dared to want their bastard child. they dared to (try to) pick the man they’d share their lives and bodies with.

they committed the grave and oh so terrible offense of being active agents in their own lives. and for that, they were punished. women are commodities in westeros—their value resting in their marriageability, and their marketability for marriage depends on a few important factors: their virginity, their beauty, their status, and their fertility.

so a highborn woman having a bastard in this world is a massive f u. it disrupts an entire system dependent on women’s submission and forced participation where men benefit from their oppression and the idea that women exist to secure alliances through their bodies. it shakes a patriarchy that relies on control—control of bloodlines, inheritance, and legacy.

the tragedy of lysa and lyanna is that they were always doomed by the narrative—they were part of the generation that couldn’t overcome their rotting and oppressive society. theirs was the generation of the false spring, not the true one—their fates are ones the next generation is meant to overcome.

but what truly interests me is the way lysa and lyanna contrast.

both characters belong to the bael/stark maiden archetype. lyanna and rhaegar fit this mold almost perfectly. but lysa and petyr are a failed, mismatched version. petyr wanted catelyn (who became lady stark), but ended up with her sister instead. lysa wanted petyr, a bael-ISH figure, but he never loved her.

their failed reiteration of the archetypal relationship was solidified by these facts: petyr thought he’d taken catelyn’s maidenhead, not lysa’s. their first time wasn’t even consensual. and their child was killed in the womb. it was no romance—it was never real the way lysa wished for it to be.

and yet, the most significant contrast between lyanna and lysa lies in their relationship with their fathers.

lysa trusted her father. she told him about her pregnancy, hoping it would mean she could marry petyr. i doubt she ever imagined he would harm her, but that’s exactly what hoster tully did—he gave her moon tea to abort the child, to preserve her value, promising her trueborn children. then he married her off to jon arryn—a man even older than hoster himself—who married lysa for duty, for the swords of house tully to win the rebellion for his boys (ned and robert), and because he needed a fertile wife to get children on. lysa had made a grave mistake by trusting her father, her patriarch.

lyanna, on the other hand, clearly understood that her father would never prioritize her happiness over what he could gain by marrying her off. her clear lack of trust in the men of her family is paramount to understanding why she escaped.

but lysa stayed, and went from her father’s hands into jon arryn’s. lysa married for politics and suffered for it, losing child after child. so when jon arryn tried to take her last child from her, she did what was once done to her: she poisoned him. lysa reenacted the violence of her past to protect her son.

lyanna ran, and later died giving birth to her son. it was a gendered death, but it was also her choice. love didn’t save her, but duty wouldn’t have either. and at least she died in the tower of joy, surrounded by winter roses, making ned finally see, forcing him to not ignore her wishes, forcing him to promise her... in the end, she still had to rely on another man—on the new stark patriarch—but this time, she was heard. basically, she got lucky here.

the themes explored through the bael/stark maiden archetypal relationship are about agency, loss, and how the westerosi patriarchy twists the relationship between fathers and daughters—a mesh of love and objectification as this is a system that demeans women to a life of commodity.

lysa and lyanna’s stories are having a conversation about the violence of the patriarchy and the risks it poses to women if they trust or defy it. these two female characters are reminders of what happens to women who dare to want, and their ends are ones the current female protagonists are meant to avoid and overcome—to prevail where lyanna and lysa lost.

if lyanna’s defiant choice to run helped spark robert’s rebellion, then lysa’s trauma fueled actions helped spark the war of the five kings (to be clear: i don’t think either of them actually caused these wars). i’d say the critical focus of the narrative is on the world that made lyanna and lysa’s choices fatal and catastrophic in the first place. and the fates of these two female characters were direct consequences of the commodifying of women.

+ The PGG taught him how to live skillfully and act, play a role to integrate with everyone but still keep his own nature. Darius's passion for acting and drama was inspired by The PGG himself. Darius also helped The PGG open up about his doubts, frustrations and tiredness about himself. Both helped each other to improve themselves.

+ The PGG had a deep passion for wild magic and he often shared his knowledge with Darius or asked Darius to think of bold plans to use magic.

+ The PGG realized that Alador actually had very dangerous relationships with the dark society and the underworld. Because he was afraid that Alador would lead Darius to participate in these paths, The PGG tried even harder to convince Darius to join the council. At the same time, The pgg cooperated with Hermonculus to create false evidence to accuse Alador of being involved in causing Eda to be cursed because Alador was related to the black market and wild witches. Alador voluntarily left Darius because he did not want Dariu to be implicated and used the excuse of insulting the artistic value of Darisu's project to make Darius leave him. Darisu was disappointed with Alador's attitude, so he chose to fight back against Alador. Misunderstanding after misunderstanding, Alador and Darius ended their friendship and confronted each other.

Ah, nice, a bomb.

Picking up where last episode left off, the swing now as Moon has left:

Definitely a fan of the show repeatedly putting people or objects in between people. In this case, the swing representing Moon between Lin Ling and "his job"

"You've made your choice" "Otherwise, all your choices will have been for naught." Total fallacy, of course, but again ties back to the whole thing in episode one about "working hard and making do" rather than striving for the impossible.

The aim is to reach top ten. Everything and anyone else is purely a stepping stone. Something about how Lin Ling is still thinking in terms of people whilst his backers want that top ten at all costs.

Back to 2d for the backstory. Interestingly, this is 34 years after commission so 7(?) years prior.

So, Firm Man was created as a viral sensation after he protected a girl from falling debris. Reads as less engineered than Moon's influencer background, for now.

Oof, Lin Ling adjusting the mug so the logo was perfectly centred. He's definitely feeling the effects of being Nice.

Liking the grainy video-esque effects over this particular flashback. Gives it a certain vibe.

The story we're being told thus far very much frames Firm Man as a well-meaning guy, who succeeded as hero without actively seeking fame.

We're now two years later, 36 after commission, so he reached top ten pretty quickly, presumably.

Not sure what to make of how he pauses when the girl offers him the scarf and doesn't say anything as the spokesperson drapes it over him.

"There are many heroes, but only one can aim for the title of X." <- aha, is that main plot I see? Or at least some more explicit worldbuilding.

His Trust value forces him to stand tall?? Is that why he paused when offered the scarf? Yikes.

Imagination is more powerful than violence. Hm. Oh wait-- tulpas? Utilising the Trust system against those held up by it? Clever. I like how the magazines being distributed are so reminiscent of comics right down to the font use.

"We finally meet again, Firm Man" <- given it's been explicitly said they haven't fought face-to-face before, there are only so many people this wolf girl can be. The aim is to pull down what the statue represents, iseeisee (does not see). Oh, nice, it gets explained. The deification of heroes over the protection of living people. Cool motive, still morally dubious the way it's being advocated. I keep wondering if Firm Man can even physically put down the statue.

The flickering between selves, 2d/3d, really fun to watch. Also, thanks for the exposition, Lin Ling.

Can't decide if I think this is "fair" recontextualisation to have Firm Man spell it out like this. Yeah, it was weird on first watch, but you can still get across that she's seeing him struggle from her POV without inserting a line there was no sign of originally.

So, Lin Ling went in with (presumably) the intent to help, but this is also an "opportunity" to break into top ten. As marketing lady quickly realises.

The happiest elevator in the world :pensive:. Firm Man seems content though, at least.

"No doubt you're moving to this floor because you've thought it over and made a decision" Ah, Firm Man, you're funny.

Firm Man walking away, widening the distance between them, with the central tower also dividing them. Lin Ling's attempts to reach out aren't going well and he just comes off more isolated, even as he tries to relate and explain himself.

I feel like a similar line was said previously to Lin Ling, maybe by Moon? That time, it was more of a positive slant, this time... less so

Wait, is this the first time this episode we've seen Lin Ling as himself? Didn't realise until now.

And here's the plot (Moon hostage). I am expecting the crimesiest of crimes against women. But that's next episode!

(Will admit, with the challenge as it is, it's hard to see how Lin Ling's arc can be closed off properly in the one remaining episode? I guess so far, it's been that he was at rock bottom and 'Nice' gave him an opportunity to "become a hero". Now he's realised it's not all it's cracked up to be and is having his status threatened. But like, he was already at the suicide stage in episode one. So either he recovers from this somehow and is trapped as Nice (possible but it's how he could recover from it I can't figure out) or he loses his status and the role of Nice and then he's left with, what, exactly? If Moon dies for real as well (which I'm expecting at like 75%?), then he's lost the only person he could relate to, his job, and he's legally *dead*. It's hard to see how Lin Ling losing Nice could be the same relief it was for Firm Man.)

But, I guess I'll just have to see how it plays out.

Lin Ling is falling more victim to the perfectionism. So far it's only been influencing minor things like placement of mugs or keeping objects clean. Wonder if/when it'll affect something more major.

“Environmental restoration may be the art form of the twenty-first century” — from Helping Nature Heal (Ten Speed Press, 1991)

Environmental restoration is the other side of the coin to much of the activity that Earth First! has so far been engaged in — that is, grappling with the toxic forces of ‘law’ and ‘order’ in a very overt way. Such activity is the defensive work, a holding operation, crucial in many ways and important for bringing people together as a group, cementing the bonds between them in shared, often harrowing experience. However it is important not to get hung up on the adrenaline and peculiar glamour of such frontline situations.

Environmental restoration is proactive — whereby we set our own agenda — as opposed to campaigns, which usually involve little more than reacting to the latest state or business atrocity. Restoration therefore helps to signal our ultimate indifference to politicians and the fleeting games that they play. Restoration is less dramatic and more humble than the preservation battles, but it does establish a vital new paradigm: humanity as creator and healer — one who adds value or — makes reparations to nature — rather than one who is unable to do anything but destroy and despoil.

There is no immediate gratification, no overnight old growth forest or pristine wilderness — rather a slow, cumulative process of getting to grips with what surrounds you, and establishing an intimacy and a rapport with a given area of land. There are strong personal and spiritual repercussions: the realisation that you have set in motion a process that will extend far beyond your lifetime leads you into a deeper comprehension of nature, and the scale on which she works. Some of you goes with the tree branches as they steadily rear up towards the sky.

Earth repair work is becoming increasingly widespread in the US, India and elsewhere, but is still relatively uncommon in Britain. We featured Alan Watson’s visionary Trees for Life project in Do or Die #2 (Write to the editorial address for a copy of that article), and a similar project, albeit on a much more modest scale, is that run by the group Tree Spirit on their newly acquired 24 acre plot at Maes y Mynach, near Shrewsbury.

Tree Spirit exist to promote an appreciation of trees and the spiritual, social and ecological roles that they fulfil. To this end, they publish a newsletter, hold regular ‘tree moot’ gatherings, and campaign for the preservation of woodland areas. On a more practical level they also operate their own tree nursery, with stock largely drawn from commercial nursery surplus. (A word of advice to EF!ers interested in tree rearing with a view to clandestine or authorised planting: due to the exigencies of the deranged market system that we live under, many nurseries are forced to destroy thousands of perfectly good trees every year — generally from March through to June. This is for no other reason than to make way for the new stock (and to protect prices, of course). It is therefore worth approaching your local nursery at this time of year — you can take the trees off their hands, leave them with a clear conscience, and acquire the raw materials for reforestation at little or no cost.)

Another lesson to be learnt from Tree Spirit’s purchase of Maes y Mynach concerns funding. The purchase was partly financed by the Forestry Commission’s Woodland Grant Scheme, which is well worth looking into for anyone contemplating such a project. Although the buying and selling of land is obviously a complete absurdity, it is true to say that if you buy land where it is cheapest — i.e. Wales or Scotland (Particularly Scotland where there is currently a glut on the market as the big estates are further dismembered) — and then reforest it under the Woodland Grant Scheme, you actually stand to make a profit (Over, say, about 10 years), which can then be reinvested in additional acquisitions — this is Tree Spirit’s intention. And before you know it, your mighty empire of reforestation has expanded, and the wildwood has returned... NOT! (Ecological capitalism, any one?) Copies of the Woodland Grant Scheme are available from ‘The Wilderness’, South Downs EF!, or you local Forestry Commission office. Bear in mind the fact that, as the WGS is an attempt by the Forestry Commission to restore an image tarnished by decades of desecrating the landscape with conifers, the grants for broadleaved tree planting are very generous. Even more incredibly the grants for ‘natural regeneration’ are the most generous of all. For non-interventionist EF! types, this has to be worthy of serious attention. (A word of warning however. The Forestry Commission has reportedly begun to revert back to type — plans are afoot to increase funding for large scale conifer plantations, and to reduce it for broadleaved planting, particularly if it is small scale. If true, I guess it just goes to show that you can’t keep a bad institution down.)

Maes y Mynach is itself a former Forestry Commission plantation, and part of Tree Spirit’s vision for the land involves rectifying the environmental damage that such a plantation entails. Their aim is twofold: firstly, to create a mixed woodland for ecological reasons — to which end, a very wide range of trees are being planted: oak, ash, birch, rowan, willow, lime, chestnut, hazel, hawthorn, wild cherry, bird cherry, aspen, field maple, sycamore, yew and larch. Ultimately they intend to encircle the entire plot with a good mixed hedge, which will in itself be extremely valuable to wildlife.

Secondly there is the human element — acknowledging that we do have a place in nature, and that we are not intrinsically hostile to the natural world, as some strands in deep ecology seem to suggest. Tree Spirit hope that Maes y Mynach will be “a place where people can come to do practical conservation work, enjoy nature, relax and generally find a little bit of peace and quiet... it will be a place where people can stay for a few days without being told to move on or “get orf my land”. However they emphasize that “it will not become a permanent encampment for all and sundry. For those who have something constructive to offer or who need a little time away from the madness of modern society, Maes y Mynach will be accessible.”

To achieve these aims a tremendous amount of work is in order. Most of the tree planting has been done, but some still remains — particularly the hedgerows. Planting season is October through to April. Many paths need clearing as there is still a great deal of felled wood strewn about from the forestry operations. Tree Spirit want to create a pond, which will serve as both a wildlife feature and as drainage for the main track. Maes y Mynach also has a spring, which is currently being made into a source of clean water. The most ambitious plan is to construct a roundhouse, for which planning permission has already been obtained. It will be 32 feet in diameter, 13 feet high at the central point and crowned with a turf roof. It is envisaged that the roundhouse will act as a workshop, storage space, communal gathering/celebratory venue, and as a sleeping area. (Perhaps a future EF! gathering could be held there.)
