I watchrd the murder bot show. I heard some book fans think it’s nonbinary and some argue it likes it pronouns. Why? Isn’t it dehumanizing? And is the guy who forced it to Murderbot to make eye contact, via orders ableist? I can see why book readers think it is autistic coded. I feel weird calling a nonbinary-coded, autistic-coded lifeform it. Does it really prefer those pronouns? I read on tumblr thay apparently it does. I personally don’t prefer it/it’s pronouns, but not all enbies are the same.
Hiya!
I suppose it's not surprising that an ask like this would show up, if not in my inbox, than somebody's! Murderbot's pronouns are something I've consistently seen lots of questions about over the years, and with an influx of new folks being introduced due to the show, there's going to be more than ever.
First of all: thanks for asking these questions. I think when first being introduced to a new idea, such as a set of pronouns you're unfamiliar with, asking open and honest questions shows great intellectual curiosity and interest in understanding others.
There's a few different questions in this ask, so I'm going to try and break this down into sections, and to tackle them one by one. (And for the record, most of my answers here will be in reference to the books, not the TV show, because a) I haven't seen the show [yet] and b) there's only 2 episodes of it out right now anyway. I have no idea how closely the two texts are going to align, but I certainly hope it doesn't take away the book series' queer themes and representation.)
1. What's Murderbot's gender, and what pronouns does it use?
Murderbot is agender/non-gendered, and uses it/its pronouns.
For the record, I don't think this is just a reading or an interpretation. Rather, this is canonical, and on the same level as saying, "Bruce Wayne is a man who uses he/him pronouns."
Admittedly, there's never a place where the character says "My name is Murderbot, I'm non-binary, and I use it/its pronouns." In my opinion, one of the the strengths of the books is that it has much more subtle worldbuilding than that, both in general and in regards to casual queerness. However, throughout its first-person narration, Murderbot consistently uses "it" to refer to itself, and shows a general alienation and distaste for gender stuff in general. Its friends/allies, even after long acquaintance, continue using it/its.
Textual examples include:
Book 1: Yes, talk to Murderbot about its feelings. The idea was so painful I dropped to 97 percent efficiency. Book 2: To initiate the meeting, I’d had to make an entry on the social feed, too. The system was extremely vulnerable to hacking, so I had backdated my entry to look like I had come in on an earlier passenger transport, listed my job as “security consultant,” and my gender as indeterminate. Book 5: "No, it says it's fine," I heard her relaying to others on the comm. "Well, yes, it's furious." Book 6: I posted a feed ID with the name SecUnit, gender = not applicable, and no other information. Book 7: I was as indifferent to human gender as it was possible to be without being unconscious.
And while I think it's unnecessary, given the textual evidence, we can bring in Word of God too, courtesy of the book's author Martha Wells:

So, okay, Murderbot uses it/its pronouns! Which leads into the next question...
Why does Murderbot use 'It/Its' pronouns? Isn't that dehumanizing?
Yes, and that's just the way Murderbot likes it!
I think the reason this is often a stumbling block for folks is that a main focus of the early series-- especially book 1, or as the case may be, first episodes of the new adaptation-- is establishing that Murderbot Is A Person. From there, it's an easy leap to go: Therefore, Murderbot Is Human. After all, it has a human face.
But the second part of the central theme is: Murderbot is a person, but not a human person.
It is half-bot, half-human, all SecUnit. It has things in common with both of those halves, and emergent properties unique to itself. More than that, Murderbot is deeply alienated from the human experience. It spent the majority of its life being treated like an object, and appliance, and a weapon.
Murderbot chooses to embrace those aspects of its identity by continuing to use it/its pronouns. And yeah, it's clear that this often makes other folks feel uncomfortable. But that's a big part of it too. Murderbot's arc is about learning how to exist, as itself, unapologetically. It doesn't need to sand off those uncomfortable parts of its existence that make the humans around it uncomfortable. They just have to deal.
Okay, but that's Murderbot, a fictional character. What about actual real people?
That's a great point! And indeed, I don't care so much about Murderbot's pronouns for its own sake. It's a fictional character, it can't and doesn't care what real world people call it. But I think respecting its pronouns is an extension of respecting real living folks who DO use it/its pronouns, so let's talk about it!
(And for the record, I am not nonbinary. I'm also not not nonbinary? But I'm a sapphic butch with an often masc gender presentation, so it's like, an Overlap. My point being I'll do my best to speak to this perspective, but really, you're best seeking out the perspectives of actual it/its users and nonbinary folks.)
Various non-binary, agender, and other gender queer folks use it/its pronouns. The reasons vary hugely. Explanations I've seen are:
Generally feeling alienated from the human experience
Feeling a greater connection to non-human identities, like animals or robots
Connection to the many beautiful things exist in the world which (in English) have it/its pronouns applied to them-- think the ocean, or food, or celestial bodies.
A gender neutral pronoun that doesn't introduce the plural ambiguity of 'they/them' and isn't a neopronoun set folks need to learn.
Reclamation of insults they've received
and idk, they just sort of like it? Sometimes things aren't that deep.
And probably a whole bunch more reasons!
And really, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what I think of it. While we can get deep into the theory of pronouns, at the end of the day, using the pronouns people prefer is just common courtesy. You can personally find it weird and uncomfortable, and you can work through it in your own time... But if someone asks, just use the pronouns they want!
Was the guy who forced it to Murderbot to make eye contact via orders ableist?
Okay, again, I haven't seen the show yet, so I don't have full context. But was the guy Gurathin? I bet it was Gurathin. While he didn't do that specifically in the book, he did pull some similar stunts.
In short, yeah, probably. It's a dick move regardless.
In long, I don't think he was being deliberately ableist. The guy is viewing the situation through a very different framework, namely, 'this SecUnit is a threat and a danger, and I am trying to control the situation'. Very likely, if he met a human colleague or acquaintance who asked not to make eye-contact, or just very clearly didn't like it, he probably would be chill and accommodating.
But the thing is, plenty of folks are ableist in day-to-day life without meaning to be ableist! You'll see folks be like "this person is so annoying because they do 'X thing', and it's not like they have an autism diagnosis or anything", as if the formal diagnosis is a magic wand to make certain behaviours okay. In general, things would be better if we just got better at accommodating benign behaviours that exist outside the norm without explanation.
[And frankly, my bigger concern here is less "ableism", and more "using his social power to force somebody who is a slave to follow his orders", but that's neither here nor there.]
Is it ableist to call a non-binary coded, autistic coded lifeform it/its?
Well, I mean, context matters?
A lot of shitty people will use it/its in a cruel way to various neurodivergent and queer people. They are deliberately intending to demean and dehumanize. That's shitty. Whether that's ableist or queerphobic would depend on the context, but it would be deliberately shitty.
And indeed, if you were to take another similar character... say Data from Star Trek, or Peridot from Steven Universe, and call either of them 'it', then again, depending on the context, I might call that shitty too! Their canonical pronouns are he/him and she/her respectively, and refusing to use those pronouns because "they're not really people" or "it's not a man/woman" would be a deliberately provoking move.
But if someone-- be it a fictional character, and even more so, a real person-- asks to be called "it"? That's their choice. The context has changed. It's not ableist, it's not queerphobic. That's just respecting them.
#murderbot diaries#murderbot tv show#tmbd#it/its pronouns#gender stuff#long post#huge thank you for folks in the Murderbot Discord who helped me source quotes from the books!#and again#i'm cis#just doing my best here#fully encourage any nonbinary folks to weigh in

PAMPERS PUBLIC SCHOOL REFORM: EDUCATION REIMAGINED OR REGRESSION GONE TOO FAR?
By Emily Dawson, Investigative Reporter
For years, education reform has been a topic of heated debate. Traditional schooling often leaves students overwhelmed by stress, struggling with expectations, and ill-prepared for real life. In response, school districts across the country have begun partnering with Pampers Corporation to introduce a radically new approach to learning—one that eliminates unnecessary pressure, fosters emotional well-being, and removes the burdens of growing up too quickly.
The Pampers Public School Reform Program has now fully replaced traditional education in multiple districts, converting high schools into structured learning environments tailored to a simpler, more guided lifestyle. Students are relieved of responsibilities that once weighed them down, such as complex coursework, college preparation, and even basic hygiene routines. In their place? A nurturing, preschool-style environment where comfort and security come first.
While many officials praise the program’s success, not everyone is celebrating.
"I’m Not a Toddler—Why Are They Treating Me Like One?"
Emma Reynolds, 18, had spent years working toward an honors diploma, with hopes of attending a prestigious university. But when her high school was converted to a Pampers Academy, she found herself pulled into a system she never agreed to.
"It’s not school—it’s a daycare," Emma hisses, gripping the edge of her desk, which is barely big enough to accommodate her.
Around her, the other students seem perfectly content in their new reality. The majority have already transitioned to full-time Pampers, no longer expected to even attempt bathroom breaks. Many sit in their seats with thickly padded bottoms, others waddle freely around the classroom, their sagging diapers peeking out from beneath colorful onesies. Some suckle on pacifiers while listening to their teacher read a picture book aloud, their attention spans seemingly far removed from any concern about essays, exams, or college applications.
Emma isn’t like them. She remembers what school used to be.
"They call me ‘sweetie’ and ‘princess’ and pat my head when I get answers right. They make me sit crisscross-applesauce on the rug during storytime. They don’t teach math, they teach shapes. We have scheduled nap times. And worst of all?" She shifts uncomfortably, her thick pull-ups rustling beneath her skirt. "They won’t even let us use the bathroom like normal people."
Under the Pampers system, students are placed in protective undergarments based on their "developmental needs." For most, that means ultra-absorbent Pampers diapers, ensuring accidents never disrupt classroom learning. Only a handful, like Emma, are still permitted pull-ups, though even that comes with restrictions.
"I told them I don’t need them. I told them I can hold it during class. But guess what?" She clenches her fists. "I couldn’t."
She shakes her head, looking away. "And when you have an accident, they make a big deal about it. They take you to the ‘quiet corner,’ change you, tell you it’s okay, and give you a sticker for ‘trying your best.’ It’s humiliating. But the worst part?" She swallows hard. "The more accidents you have, the more they ‘adjust’ your routine."
At first, Emma was only required to wear pull-ups during class. Now, she’s in them full-time. She doesn’t know what the next "adjustment" will be.
"What happens if they decide I don’t need pull-ups anymore?" she whispers. "What happens if they decide I need…more?"
A Mother’s Concern: “I Don’t Know How Much Longer She’ll Last”
Emma’s mother, Debbie Hall, initially believed the program was an opportunity for her daughter to learn patience and adapt to new challenges. Now, she isn’t so sure.
"She’s been fighting this since day one," Debbie admits, rubbing her temples. "But every time she resists, the school just… doubles down."
At first, Emma refused to use her Pampers-issued pull-ups, insisting she would simply wait until she got home. It didn’t last.
"She told me she’d hold it," Debbie sighs, shaking her head. "She didn’t."
When the school called, Debbie was asked to bring a fresh pull-up and a change of clothes—a moment she describes as one of the most surreal experiences of her life.
"I stood outside the classroom, holding a pack of training pants meant for toddlers, about to hand them to my eighteen-year-old daughter." She exhales sharply. "I don’t know how much longer she’ll last before she stops fighting it."
And that, she fears, is exactly what Pampers wants.
Success Stories: “Happier, Healthier Students”
Despite cases like Emma’s, school officials and many parents insist the program is working. According to Superintendent Laura Whitmore, dropout rates have plummeted, student anxiety is at an all-time low, and behavioral issues are almost nonexistent.
"When we take away the pressures of growing up too fast, we allow students to flourish in a safe, nurturing space," Whitmore explains. "Pampers helps us create a structured learning environment where students can focus on emotional well-being and positive reinforcement.
Studies show that students in the program are better rested, less anxious, and more cooperative. Many enthusiastically embrace their new routine, growing attached to naptime, play-based learning, and the security of their Pampers uniforms.
"Some students come in fighting," Whitmore admits. "But as they settle into the routine, they come to appreciate the comfort and care we provide. And the best part? They never have to worry about making ‘big kid’ mistakes again."
The Future of Education?
With more schools adopting the Pampers model, traditional high school education may soon become a thing of the past. For students like Emma, who still long for independence, the future remains uncertain. But for many others, a world without adult pressures, expectations, or even bathroom breaks is a dream come true.
And as the Pampers program continues to expand, one thing is clear:
For the next generation, growing up may no longer be necessary.
(Sponsored in part by Pampers Corporation. Because learning should be comfortable.)

You do a lot of really cool stuff and you do it As You. How do you overcome the fear of being Perceived and Known? Especially when the stuff you're raising awareness about is controversial or big? I have anxiety and while the "fuck it we ball" mindset has gotten me fairly far, I still find myself regretting putting myself out there or regressing back into a shut in.
i feel like what helped me kinda deal with getting pretty well known is probably not really applicable to many other people, because most of it really was that ive just been slowly more and more exposed to a bigger and bigger level of fame since i was like 16 or so. long before i was at the point i am now i was a really well known person in the android modding community and then the broader and broader tech community, i definitely didn't deal super well with some of my first minutes of fame and there's lots of stuff i regret (i def let it get to my head for a while and because i was also slowly burning out at the time i was quite an asshole to a lot of people). i don't think that was necessarily the best for me at the time, but i learned some lessons especially about community building and i did a lot of media work already at the time so ive been honing my communications skills for almost 10 years at this point.
i first started blowing up with hacktivism related stuff around 2019, and then everytime i did again it was bigger and bigger, making massive international headlines for the first time in 2021 (with the verkada story). i still fucked up a lot and got very stressed at that time, especially with my mental health being extremely abysmal and paranoia growing as state repression became inevitable.
after the indictment in 2021 i did more and more press work again (there are lots of portraits of me from that era) but still wasn't like A Celebrity except for those brief moments, which (as i took a break from hacktivism) gave me some more time to grow and learn. by the time the no fly list hack happened in 2023 i had been spending a few months already doing various smaller cyber security related work and working with many of my journalist friends in the industry. in a lot of ways the no fly list leak and the media reaction to it was just routine work for me already at that point, which i think allowed me to take in all the social fame way better as well. it still all felt quite surreal, but i was already mostly media trained, had quite a bit of experience with working with an audience already so it was just kind of a matter of adapting to my new environment.
this isn't to say i was like specifically working towards fame (especially this level) but ive always cared about community/audience building and media communication. i don't think im like "fake" or whatever, but you do have to consider that despite my laid back style im still someone with an autistic special interest in personal branding and media communications. i just don't wanna do that for corporations or for profit and instead use it for my activist and journalist self advocacy to give things a platform.
#(there is also a lot of privilege that goes into a lot of this ofc#but i wanted to focus more specifically on how i deal with fame so nonchalantly)#long post

The North Node in Taurus urges them to shift towards a more grounded, material existence, learning the importance of self-sufficiency and cultivating inner and outer security.
Their journey involves releasing tendencies to cling to transient, fleeting experiences and instead build a solid foundation for themselves and their loved ones. By embracing life’s simple pleasures and learning to appreciate the physical world, Taurus North Node individuals will find greater contentment and fulfillment.
---
South Node In Taurus
The South Node represents the habits, tendencies, and patterns we bring from past lives or early in this life. In Taurus, the South Node indicates that individuals may have a tendency to over-focus on material wealth, comfort, or indulgence, sometimes to the point of complacency. While these individuals may have a natural talent for creating financial security or appreciating the pleasures of life, they are urged to release any over-attachment to these things to fulfill their soul’s purpose.
The South Node in Taurus may indicate a tendency to resist change, leading to stagnation or an excessive need for routine. These individuals may also struggle with a fear of loss or insecurity, which could lead to clinging to what they have. Overcoming this attachment to the past is key to their growth.
The challenge for South Node Taurus individuals is to learn to release their attachment to comfort and material gain, moving towards the lessons of the North Node (in Scorpio)—which involves transformation, emotional depth, and the exploration of the unseen aspects of life.
---

They may also have a strong connection to the earth, nature, and physical pleasures. There is a natural charm to this placement, and Taurus Ascendant people often come across as approachable, trustworthy, and steady.
However, Taurus Rising individuals can sometimes be seen as stubborn or resistant to change. They prefer to stay in their comfort zones, and change often requires considerable effort. The key challenge is learning to balance their need for stability with the flexibility required for personal growth.
---

They may be drawn to careers that allow them to build something lasting, such as real estate, finance, or the arts. Their ambition tends to be steady and persistent, and they take pride in creating something that will endure.

These individuals may come from families where material security or the comfort of the physical world was highly valued. They are likely to carry this attachment to comfort and stability into their adult lives, often seeking to create a home that is calm, beautiful, and full of sensory delights.
Taurus IC individuals may struggle with letting go of the past or fear of losing the security they’ve built. Their challenge lies in learning to cultivate emotional security that doesn’t depend entirely on external circumstances. They may also seek partners who share their desire for financial security and emotional stability. However, they may struggle with being overly possessive or dependent on their partners for their sense of security.
Their challenge is learning to balance their need for stability with the ability to allow their relationships to grow and change. A healthy relationship for Taurus Descendant individuals is one that combines loyalty and sensuality with room for personal growth and mutual respect.
---

Is Vgen safe to use? I'd never heard of it before you mentioned it but it looks cool
this answer's going to be a bit roundabout because I don't feel comfortable directly vouching for anyone who handles money besides myself. and I don't even vouch for myself
so, vgen is basically a non-japanese* (*: primarily western, but that's more of a demographic thing than a platform restriction) version of skima mixed with skeb, both of which are existing sites that japanese artists use to take sketchbook style requests
pixiv also does this now, along with a few other japanese sites, but it's generally been kind of limited to being an otaku thing, even outside of japan, and it's very often been limited to japanese artists actually taking these requests (even if anyone can send them) because of legal issues around international payment
for context, skeb's request-based style of commissioning gained a lot of popularity because it's, frankly, antisocial in a comfortable way for both clients and artists
[you can skip this section if you know what skeb is]
you can think of it as paying an artist to draw something with the understanding that you are paying for the literal act of them drawing it, rather than for a refined and specific finished product
in this format, the requester puts money on the table alongside a brief outline of what they want and any applicable references. there is usually an outline of how much you should pay at minimum, some examples of that artist's work, and (traditionally) a hard rule that neither party in this arrangement communicates with each other about it outside of the request-accept-send-tip procedure itself
traditionally, when the artist accepts the request, the platform takes the money and holds it in escrow. then, when the artist sends the finished work, the exchange is concluded with the requester receiving the work (possibly along with a written note by the artist) and the artist receiving their payment from the site. if the artist doesn't finish the work before an agreed-upon deadline, the money is refunded
in the original skeb format, if the requester especially enjoys the art, it's customary to tip the artist, which applies a golden border around the art and allows the requester to include a thank-you note, displayed alongside the artist's commentary and their original request
this is important to lay out because, as you might notice, there are no windows for revisions and no active direct lines of communication allowed. I've seen people get angry about this before, so that's one way in which the skeb style of commission can be considered "unsafe"
there's a lot of misconceptions around the differences in legal rights here, but the bottom line is that, when it comes to commissioned artwork, most people on the english-speaking internet are profoundly misinformed about the laws around things and operate largely on handshake agreements that wouldn't really hold up in any court, if push came to shove
[end skip]
so! let's get to vgen
vgen, being an adaptation of this format, actually mixes in a lot of different features that I would consider to be more traditional for western art commissions. it carries over the skima/skeb style storefronts, but adapts them more towards serving vtubers (a common use case for skeb and skima) with a slight tilt towards the client having additional protection
for example, to open an artist storefront on vgen, you have to either be invited in by someone or pass some variety of notability verification test (either an engagement baiting post including your art or winning a contest of some fashion)
to make requests, you just kind of make an account and send the money
skeb style commissions do exist on vgen, but the site is designed to allow additional stages of artist communication on certain requests. this means that you may get some extra securities as a client, or you may not, depending on the terms of the request
one notable rule of vgen which makes it distinct from similar sites is that you can't draw porn on there. this may come as a shock, because people aren't great about following that rule, but it is actually a pretty firm rule on account of the site being more beholden to major western-centred payment processors
so, as far as the site itself goes, if you keep yourself familiar with the rules and actually read the terms of your deals, you're safe there in the same way that you're safe when making a conscious decision to climb a tree
as far as financial matters and the site's management go, I don't know, and I can't know because I don't know the staff personally
I have made a personal decision to trust that they're acting in good faith. I've made a request through the site before to test it out, it went as expected, so my decision to use it is informed by my own sense of risk management
TL;DR: is vgen safe to use? I don't personally think it's uniquely risky as far as storefronts go, but it's an online storefront where people sell each other things, so treat it as one and walk about as carefully as you always do

The AirTag Collar: A Smart Solution for Tracking Your Pet

In a world where technology continues to simplify our lives, Apple’s AirTag has emerged as a game-changer for keeping tabs on everyday items. From keys to backpacks, this tiny Bluetooth tracker has found a new and popular application: the AirTag collar. Designed primarily for pets, this innovative accessory combines style, functionality, and peace of mind for pet owners everywhere.
What is an AirTag Collar?
An AirTag collar is a pet collar equipped with a slot or attachment to hold an Apple AirTag, a coin-sized device that uses Bluetooth and Apple’s Find My network to track its location. Unlike traditional GPS trackers, the AirTag leverages a vast network of Apple devices worldwide to anonymously ping its location, making it a lightweight and cost-effective alternative for pet tracking.
While Apple doesn’t officially market AirTags for pets, creative pet owners and accessory makers have embraced the idea, leading to a surge in AirTag-compatible collars available in various materials, from durable nylon to sleek leather.
How Does It Work?
The AirTag collar operates seamlessly with the Find My app on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Once the AirTag is paired with your Apple account and secured to the collar, you can track your pet’s location in real time if they’re within Bluetooth range (about 30 feet). If your furry friend wanders farther, the Find My network kicks in, using nearby Apple devices to relay the AirTag’s location back to you—no subscription fees required.
For precision tracking, the AirTag also features Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology (on compatible iPhones), guiding you with directional arrows to your pet’s exact spot. Plus, if your pet is close but hidden—say, under the couch—you can trigger the AirTag’s built-in speaker to play a sound, making retrieval a breeze.
Benefits of an AirTag Collar
Affordable Tracking: At around $29 per AirTag, it’s a one-time purchase compared to GPS collars that often require monthly fees.
Long Battery Life: The AirTag’s replaceable CR2032 battery lasts up to a year, minimizing maintenance.
Discreet Design: Small and lightweight, it won’t weigh down your pet or feel bulky on their collar.
Global Reach: With millions of Apple devices worldwide, the Find My network offers impressive coverage, especially in urban areas.
Limitations to Consider
While the AirTag collar is a brilliant concept, it’s not without drawbacks. It relies on proximity to Apple devices, so tracking may falter in remote areas with few users. It’s also not a real-time GPS solution—updates depend on when the AirTag pings a nearby device. Additionally, Apple warns that AirTags weren’t designed for pets, so ensuring a secure fit is crucial to prevent loss or discomfort.
Popular AirTag Collar Options
The market has responded enthusiastically, with brands offering stylish and practical collars tailored for AirTags:
Belkin Secure Holder with Collar Attachment: A simple, affordable clip-on solution.
TagVault Pet Collar Mount: A rugged, waterproof holder for active pets.
Handmade Leather Collars: Etsy sellers provide custom designs blending fashion and function.
Is It Right for You?
The AirTag collar is ideal for pet owners who want a low-cost, low-maintenance way to monitor their cat or dog, especially in busy neighborhoods. It’s less suited for rural adventurers or those needing constant, precise tracking—traditional GPS trackers might be a better fit there.
Final Thoughts
The AirTag collar exemplifies how everyday tech can adapt to solve real-world problems. For the price of a coffee run, you can outfit your pet with a smart tracking system that offers reassurance without complexity. Whether your cat’s a backyard explorer or your dog’s a master escape artist, the AirTag collar might just be the perfect blend of innovation and practicality.

a tentative peace
"You can't run from Death forever, Agatha."
"You know, when other people say that, they're generally just revealing themselves to be weak cowards, willing to accept being the toy of higher powers. And then there's you, my obsessed stalker."
"It's still true. When they say it, when I say it. Death comes for everyone in the end."
"The end?! Try every other day! I'd love to see Death the way other mortals do, exactly one time. Instead, I have to deal with you popping up every time I turn my head."
"You love seeing me. You love me. You adore me."
"Ha! I want to never, ever see your face again. But you know what, Rio? I'd settle for this. When I die, you can come and get me. Until then, I'd like to stop running from Death. I'd like to be able to do other things, without my psychopathic ex-girlfriend showing up every few days to try and ruin my life."
"Hey, you admitted I'm your girlfriend."
"Ex!"
"That's still something, for you. You know I'm not going anywhere, Agatha. I'll be with you forever."
"Then I can and I will run forever, if I have to."
"You were going to anyway. You were always afraid of what I am. That was part of the thrill, wasn't it?"
"Yes, Rio, I was always going to run from Death. The difference now is that I want to run from you."
"…Ags…"
"What? We can still fix this? I still love you? Or is this one of those days when you get fed up and try to kill me? We both know you can't! It isn't my time, it would be a defiance of the natural order, that concept you love more than you ever loved me—"
"I gave you more than I have ever given—"
"You gave me nothing!"
"…Maybe today is one of those days when I try to kill you."
"Good. Suits me."
"…"
"Well? Come on then. You can at least get a few good hits in and maybe so can I. I've been working on a new spell—"
"Tell me about it?"
"About the spell I'm going to use to try and cause you paroxysms of anguish?"
"Yes. Did you invent it?"
"Yes—well, technically no, it's modified from a tome by one of the older Sorcerer Supremes, but the way she wrote was so incomprehensible that it's like the way people used to write recipes, no measurements, more of a guide than anything, so I had to adapt quite heavily and then it's meant to work on spirits, not whatever you are, but I think I've got a version that should be generally applicable to all supernatural—hey. Aren't we supposed to be fighting to the near-death?"
"I like listening to you talk about it, though."
"…Ugh. Gross."
"I mean, do we have to?"
"Have to what?"
"Fight today. Can't you just finish telling me about your spell of unbelievable agony and then get distracted by realizing there's a way to do it better or differently, like you always do?"
"…I do not always do that."
"No. Only most of the time."
"…Fine. Just this once, though. I don't want this to become a habit. And only because it is a really interesting spell."
"…You're going to try it on me when you think I'm not paying attention, aren't you?"
"Probably. I mean, what's the point of having invented it if I don't get to try it out?"
"All right. I'll even let you. But you have to sit down and finish telling me about it first."
"It's not really fun if you let me."
"I'll pretend to act shocked by your sudden, completely unexpected betrayal?"
"Are you any good at acting?"
"I'm great at it. I act human all the time."
"Yes, but you're terrible at that."
"What?!"
"When was the last time you took a breath?"
"…Oh. I forgot again. I can't believe you all have to do that constantly."
"You see what I mean?"
"Well, if you time it right, I really will be surprised to suddenly go from pleasant conversation to—not yet!"
"No? But you were just getting lulled into a false sense of security."
"Too early. Your timings all wrong."
"It isn't and you know it. You just don't want this to end."
"…I don't. A little more? Please?"
"Sure. Where was I? The Sorcerer Supreme's instructions. So I took the general guidelines of what she'd written, which was a really interesting treatise on torturing spirits, she was not one of the nicer people to hold that position and—spiritus coruscent!"
"Oh look, betrayal."
"…That isn't hurting you, huh?"
"Doesn't seem to be. Very pretty effect, though. All these little sparkles."
"Where did I go wrong…"
"Hey, Agatha."
"Mm?"
"You know what does hurt?"
"What? Oh, yes, I see, you have a knife. Very original."
"It gets the point across. …Get it?"
"…I'm sorry every day that I ever taught you what a pun was."
"You're about to be sorry for more than that."
"Wait, wait, wait!"
"Why?"
"…Help me diagnose what went wrong with the spell first?"
"The agony-inducing spell?"
"That's the one."
"So you can make sure it induces agony on me next time?"
"Yes—hey, there's no need for that! I have organs there!"
"You'll heal. I promise. It isn't your time, remember?"
"But consider—if you help me fix the spell, you get to sit around and watch me tinker with magic instead of us trying to kill each other. Wouldn't that be better?"
"…Okay."
"Good. Great. That's settled then. And no one even had to get stabbed."
"You know you're such a coward when you're losing?"
"What makes you think I'm losing?"
"…what?"
"Nothing. Now, going back to first principles—"
Go read the Ritual of the Rose, now up to Chapter 3, for more Agatha/Rio ex-girlfriend shenanigans or The Present for something angstier

It's always "funny" to remember that software development as field often operates on the implicit and completely unsupported assumption that security bugs are fixed faster than they are introduced, adjusting for security bug severity.
This assumption is baked into security policies that are enforced at the organizational level regardless of whether they are locally good ideas or not. So you have all sorts of software updating basically automatically and this is supposedly proof that you deserve that SOC2 certification.
Different companies have different incentives. There are two main incentives:
Limiting legal liability
Improving security outcomes for users
Most companies have an overwhelming proportion of the first incentive.
This would be closer to OK if people were more honest about it, but even within a company they often start developing The Emperor's New Clothes types of behaviour.
---
I also suspect that security has generally been a convenient scapegoat to justify annoying, intrusive and outright abusive auto-updating practices in consumer software. "Nevermind when we introduced that critical security bug and just update every day for us, alright??"
Product managers almost always want every user to be on the latest version, for many reasons of varying coherence. For example, it enables A/B testing (provided your software doesn't just silently hotpatch it without your consent anyway).
---
I bring this up because (1) I felt like it, (2) there are a lot of not-so-well-supported assumptions in this field, which are mainly propagated for unrelated reasons. Companies will try to select assumptions that suit them.
Yes, if someone does software development right, the software should converge towards being more secure as it gets more updates. But the reality is that libraries and applications are heavily heterogenous -- they have different risk profiles, different development practices, different development velocities, and different tooling. The correct policy is more complicated and contextual.
Corporate incentives taint the field epistemologically. There's a general desire to confuse what is good for the corporation with what is good for users with what is good for the field.
The way this happens isn't by proposing obviously insane practices, but by taking things that sound maybe-reasonable and artificially amplifying confidence levels. There are aspects of the distortion that are obvious and aspects of the distortion that are most subtle. If you're on the inside and never talked to weird FOSS people, it's easy to find it normal.
One of the eternal joys and frustrations of being a software developer is trying to have effective knowledge about software development. And generally a pre-requisite to that is not believing false things.
For all the bullshit that goes on in the field, I feel _good_ about being able to form my own opinions. The situation, roughly speaking, is not rosy, but learning to derive some enjoyment from countering harmful and incorrect beliefs is a good adaptation. If everyone with a clue becomes miserable and frustrated then computing is doomed. So my first duty is to myself -- to talk about such things without being miserable. I tend to do a pretty okay job at that.
#i know to some of you i'm just stating the sky is blue#software#computing#security#anpost#this was an anramble at first but i just kept writing i guess#still kind of a ramble

ULTIMATE DANNY PHANTOM
VALERIE GRAY
Damon and Aisha Gray were high school sweethearts. They stuck it out through thick and thin. Aisha found her calling in teaching special needs children. Damon toiled away in tech at a time when the industry was less than welcoming to black men. That would change for him in the early 1980s when Damon developed a state-of-the-art adaptive encryption system for cybersecurity applications. This caught the eye of Axion Labs who swiftly plucked him from obscurity and elevated him to Executive Director of Security for their Chicago, Illinois, branch. His persistence and intelligence were noticed by his new bosses and he swiftly rose through the ranks, eventually landing in the role of Chief of Security for the entire corporation.
This rapid career acceleration brought the Grays the stability they needed to start a family, and Valerie was born in 1990. But the pressures of Damon’s new position required long hours and extensive, international travel. Valerie and her mother alternated between traveling with her father – taking advantage of Axion Labs’ generous daycare and private tutoring benefits – and staying at home, attending traditional school while Damon spent months at a time away from home. Despite the strength of Damon and Aisha’s bond, the new lifestyle was wearing them down. They fought often. Valerie quietly feared her parents would split and, given her father’s frequent travel, worried she wouldn’t see him anymore.
Just as the Gray’s marriage reached its tipping point in the early 2000s, Damon was given an unusual new assignment. He would still be Chief of Security, but his job responsibilities would be divided between multiple regional Deputy Chiefs of Security. They would answer to him, but this delegation would free his day-to-day to focus on a new project at Axion’s Amity Park location, of the utmost importance to Axion’s operations. It seemed more like a demotion than a promotion, but it came with a significant boost to Damon’s already generous compensation package. With the Gray family relocated to Amity Park, another benefit made itself apparent. Damon’s new schedule had him home to his wife and daughter before dinner. Their troubles were firmly behind them, and a new healthy and prosperous chapter of their lives was just beginning.
Valerie was enrolled in Casper High. Being the new kid is always a little awkward, but she found herself drawn to an odd assortment of peers. They helped file down her prickly edges that had grown as a defense mechanism against losing friends. Her mother’s expectations for academic success were borne of love and good intentions, but they had made Valerie a bit of an anxious basket case. The laid back demeanor of her new friends taught her how to unwind and have fun. She skulked and lurked amidst the moody atmosphere of goth poetry jams with Sam and Kwan. She rubbed elbows with socialites at charity events with Star and Paulina. Dash and Tucker always had an extra ticket for her during Bears and Blackhawks games. The final member of the group, like her, could be found at any of these events, enjoying himself even if he was clearly out of his element. Valerie found she had the most in common with Danny Fenton, and the two developed a close bond.
Skills and Abilities
Jack-of-All-Trades: Valerie seems to have just the right amount of aptitude and talent to be good at anything she tries. Academics and come easily to her in every subject, and she can pick up a new sport or physical activity with little practice. She’s a quick study on other activities like chess, video games, cooking, and music. While Valerie’s parents are convinced she could master any one of her interests if she hunkered down and applied herself, Valerie is content to coast in the slightly-to-moderately above average skill level.
Stubborn: When inspiration or motivation strikes, it's all but impossible to deter Valerie from a goal. This has obvious advantages – she is persistent and works very hard to overcome challenges. But her stubbornness has drawbacks as well. Sometimes Valerie doesn’t know when to quit. She has a tendency to push herself too hard, and she struggles to ask for help.
---
Valerie Gray made it through school with good enough grades to get into college. It was there when she learned the value of truly applying her talents. She received scholarships for her academic and scholastic excellence. Taking cues from her mom and dad, she developed new technologies to help special needs children as they entered adulthood. Her innovations revolutionized mental healthcare, and her name would be remembered for decades, if not centuries, hence.
But that was a future for a different Valerie. That was another life.
The future of this Valerie Gray veered into darker waters the night Danny Phantom killed her mom...

Given what happened in Bloody Mist artificial wombs might be a tool of diplomacy. Also: workplace injuries that might make carrying to term a risky proposition.
Yes! There's lots of reasons that aren't specifically Shikako related for why an external womb via seal/tech would be desired.
You bring up a great point, damnsmartblueboxes, I didn't even consider them selling to foreign countries! Or offering it as a Konoha-controlled service, a la Grass' Blood Prison -- although I imagine the amount of multinational security/oversight would have to be SO EXTREME considering bloodline theft is such a huge problem in this world. Or maybe it's a specialized mission where a Konoha team of medics and fuinjutsu users are specifically deployed, with a second Konoha team of bodyguards/escorts, to the foreign country where the artificial womb is requested where they are hosted by the village/clan that hired them for the duration of the gestation and there is an extremely thorough sanitation process in which the Konoha team makes sure none of their seals/technology has been copied and the foreign country makes sure none of the genetic material is stolen, etc etc.
Also yes! Like if the artificial womb is... flexible? adaptable?... enough so that it doesn't require the full gestation to be done in it from the start, that's also a great use of it!
Honestly, there are a surprising amount of applications for it that it would be more surprising for Shikako NOT to have made(/been involved in the process to make) it even BEFORE her theoretical future pregnancy with Sakako. Although, like, that does then make that ficlet a little suspect given that... well... wouldn't she have transferred embryo!Sakako into the artificial womb before it got to that point? Unless it's another case of Shikako not having realized how bad it was getting if it was so gradual/she was already so sleep deprived and compromised that it took Yoshino bringing her to the hospital, to the team of medics/fuinjutsu users, in order to transfer embryo!Sakako so that Shikako can finally get some sleep.

Foil Analysis: Ruby Rose vs. Arthur Watts
Ruby Rose and Arthur Watts serve as compelling foils in RWBY, embodying opposing approaches to intelligence, combat, and morality. Ruby, the idealistic protagonist, relies on her heart and technical ingenuity to inspire hope, while Watts, a cunning antagonist, leverages his intellect and pragmatism to further Salem’s destructive agenda. Their contrasting traits—naive heroism versus calculated villainy, emotional resilience versus cold defiance—highlight the series’ themes of hope versus manipulation and growth versus stagnation.
Combat and Abilities
Ruby’s reliance on her unique powers contrasts with Watts’ practical, skill-based combat. While Ruby’s abilities are flashy but situational, Watts’ calculated approach maximizes efficiency despite impracticalities.
Ruby’s Awesome, but Impractical Skills: Ruby’s Semblance (Not Quite Flight) and silver eyes are powerful, but without her scythe or powers, her inexperience leaves her extremely weak, as seen in her struggles in unarmed combat.
Watts’ Practical Combat: Watts’ revolver, tricked out with Dust rounds, has a large ammo capacity but requires careful shot-counting due to impractical reloading, yet his Badass Bookworm prowess allows him to hold his own against Ironwood.
Combat Dependency: Ruby’s dependence on Crescent Rose and her Semblance contrasts with Watts’ ability to fight effectively with minimal reliance on supernatural abilities, showcasing his adaptability.
Intelligence and Expertise
Both Ruby and Watts are technical geniuses, but their applications differ. Ruby’s creativity is tied to her passion for weapons, while Watts’ expertise serves manipulation and control.
Ruby’s Tech Genius: Ruby’s enthusiasm for weapons and technology, evident in her design of Crescent Rose, marks her as a Weirdly Bookish tech genius, though she lacks interest in academic books.
Watts’ Evil Genius: As a disgraced Atlesian scientist and doctor, Watts’ programming expertise (e.g., planting a virus in Vale’s CCT, hacking Mantle’s security) and involvement in Penny’s creation highlight his manipulative intellect.
Application of Skills: Ruby’s technical skills support her team’s heroism (e.g., upgrading weapons), while Watts uses his to orchestrate chaos, such as framing Penny for murders to ensure Jacques Schnee’s election.
Strategic Roles
Both act as the “brains” in their respective partnerships, but their goals diverge. Ruby’s leadership fosters unity, while Watts’ schemes sow discord.
Ruby as Brains to Yang’s Brawn: Ruby’s growing strategic mind, seen in coordinating team attacks, complements Yang’s physical strength, though her naivety limits her compared to Watts’ experience.
Watts as Brains to Tyrian’s Brawn: Watts’ hacking and planning support Tyrian’s chaotic fieldwork in Atlas, showcasing his calculated approach against Ruby’s more instinctive strategies.
Impact on Plans: Ruby’s plans aim to protect and unite, while Watts’ manipulations (e.g., covering Tyrian’s murders) destabilize Atlas, highlighting their opposing narrative roles.
Resilience and Defiance
Ruby and Watts both face moments of defiance, but their responses reflect their differing moral cores. Ruby’s emotional struggles lead to growth, while Watts’ defiance is rooted in pride and spite.
Ruby’s Subverted Defiance: Ruby tries to be Defiant to the End, as seen in her resolve against Salem, but her Heroic BSoD in Volume 9 subverts this, showing her vulnerability and eventual self-acceptance.
Watts’ Defiant to the End: Watts laughs in the face of death, delivering a savage “The Reason You Suck” speech to Cinder that spares his life temporarily, and he furiously attempts to escape until his demise.
Emotional Core: Ruby’s defiance stems from hope and care for others, while Watts’ is driven by intellectual superiority and disdain, as seen when he dissects Cinder’s flaws while dangling off a building.
Personality and Demeanor
Both Ruby and Watts display playful, immature traits, but their expressions differ. Ruby’s goofiness is endearing, while Watts’ playfulness is laced with arrogance.
Ruby’s Playful Immaturity: Ruby’s Large Ham, Plucky Girl nature and goofy antics (e.g., her excitement over weapons) reflect her youthful exuberance, endearing her to allies.
Watts’ Not So Above It All: Despite his stiff formality, Watts shows an immature side, poking at Seer Grimm, mocking Cinder, and waving his arms like a conductor while hacking, revealing a playful arrogance.
Contrast in Tone: Ruby’s immaturity is sincere and lighthearted, while Watts’ is condescending, as seen in his sarcastic jabs and theatrical hacking gestures.
Relationships and Alliances
Ruby’s genuine friendships contrast with Watts’ transactional alliances. Her bonds are built on trust, while Watts’ connections are pragmatic and selective.
Ruby’s Villainous Friendships: Ruby’s close bonds with Weiss and Blake, whose reserved and serious personalities contrast with her optimism (per the document), reflect mutual respect and growth.
Watts’ Villainous Friendship: Watts gets along with Tyrian, respecting his chaos and joining in mocking Cinder, but their bond is professional, lacking the emotional depth of Ruby’s friendships.
Care for Others: Ruby’s compassion extends beyond her inner circle, while Watts’ respect is limited to Tyrian and rooted in mutual utility, highlighting their moral divide.
Moral Outlook and Goals
Ruby’s idealism drives her to protect humanity, while Watts’ cynicism fuels his loyalty to Salem’s destructive cause. Their opposing worldviews shape their actions and conflicts.
Ruby’s Optimistic Heroism: Ruby’s Silly Rabbit, Cynicism Is for Losers! attitude and belief in unity (per the document) push her to inspire hope, even under pressure.
Their views are Penny is completely opposite Watts hates Penny and everything she stands for. Ruby so Penny is a friend despite being a robot.
Watts’ Cynical Villainy: Watts’ pride in his intellect and alignment with Salem’s chaos reflect his belief in power through manipulation, contrasting with Ruby’s selflessness.
Narrative Impact: Ruby’s actions aim to save Remnant, while Watts’ schemes (e.g., destabilizing Atlas) advance Salem’s goal of division, positioning them as ideological opposites.
Conclusion
Ruby Rose and Arthur Watts’ foil relationship enriches RWBY’s narrative, contrasting naive heroism with calculated villainy, emotional resilience with intellectual defiance, and compassionate unity with manipulative chaos. Ruby’s growth as a tech-savvy leader challenges Watts’ role as Salem’s cunning planner, while their shared traits—playful immaturity, technical genius, and strategic minds—underscore their narrative connection. Their dynamic highlights the stakes of hope versus destruction, with Ruby’s optimism standing as a beacon against Watts’ destructive schemes.
