Shot-by-shot commentary of one scene from Transformers: The Last Knight
A few months ago, I remembered this movie was a thing, and looked up a clip to see if I'd be able to sit though it just for Optimus.
The short answer is no.
The long answer is that this single scene has driven me insane.
Tumblr media
Bear in mind, i have very little context for this scene, so i will primarily be riffing on it from a cinematography angle. Buckle up!
Let's start with this...beautiful? aerial shot of gray metal guys running on a gray metal slope, their considerable scale reduced to that of ants on a plate by the speedy camera.
Tumblr media
These two climb out of the structure. Their spatial relation to the rest of the scene is never established.
Tumblr media
Aaand now the metal guys are running down from the other side of the screen. Did the camera keep spinning between shots?? Anyways, they start pummeling Optimus.
Tumblr media
Cut to Optimus being pummeled from the front. With a bit of planning, this could have been continuous with the previous shot, but...oh boy. Oh boy. Let's not start with that just yet.
Tumblr media
Don't forget, girl is here! (This is the last time she shows up in this scene.)
Tumblr media
Oh right, Cade was in the corner of the last shot. He gets up, starts running in the opposite screen direction of where Optimus was in relation to him earlier,
Tumblr media
...and immediately slips and falls in the next shot. You get to enjoy the moment in lovely slow-motion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Optimus then explains what is currently happening in the scene for the benefit of anyone staring slack-jawed at the screen by this point.
Tumblr media
Then the knights go back to beating Optimus up. One guy takes an axe to his back edged side down, and it doesn't do jack except knock him flat.
Tumblr media
Also, Cade is here.
Tumblr media
This guy finally comes to deal the killing blow.
Tumblr media
What follows is a series of barely connected slo-mo jump cuts of the device on Cade's arm unfolding,
Tumblr media
followed by a fast series of time-breaking cuts to show a single sword strike,
Tumblr media
oh my god they keep cutting
Tumblr media
wait WHO IS THIS, WHERE WAS HE ...oh my god, i scrubbed backwards, he's supposed to have been near Cade the whole time, what
Tumblr media
Then there's a dramatic spinning shot, which would have been a cool moment to show the walking props knights holding their swords up in abrupt reverence, but instead we mostly just watch Cade look around in confusion while Optimus grovels.
Tumblr media
We interrupt the spinning to inform you that this scene was filmed during golden hour.
Tumblr media
Back to spinning. I guess you don't have to worry about the 180 degree rule if your scene spans the full 360, huh?
Tumblr media
Cade looks over at Optimus, and Optimus looks back. ...Followed IMMEDIATELY by a fast pan of planes flying behind some knights; my eyes
Tumblr media
Optimus keeps talking. His speech is about as continuous as the shots.
Tumblr media
We finally get a quiet moment to hold on that last shot for a while, and listen to Cade give a pep talk to a war general who's seen countless human lifetimes' worth of pain and loss.
Tumblr media
And that's all that Optimus needed to pick himself up.
Tumblr media
We get a triumphant shot of Optimus straightening up, rallying his brothers in arms to rise up against Quintessa...
Tumblr media
And for one moment, perhaps your brain can feel a glimmer of joy within the soup of semi-consciousness it's now sinking into.
...
If I watch the whole movie, I will die.
That's all, folks!

MOONLIGHT CHICKEN – A MOMENT WITH HEART AND LI MING
I don't normally write about cinematography – it's not my thing and I don't know enough about the subject to say much about anything I see. But as with all art well done, when you have a visceral reaction you know that there's something going on...
Tumblr media
(above) Ep.3 [1I4] 8.01
When Heart and Li Ming have another of their heartfelt exchanges by the banisters of Heart's home, the hard verticals call to mind the bars of a prison (or a cage), a stark visual reminder of how both boys are trapped in their respective worlds, longing to break free. It also calls out to the shot of Li Ming trapped behind the metal bars of his school, echoing the same message.
Tumblr media
(above) Ep.3 [3I4] 5.32
Oh but then this shot later in the same scene! With the aerial view we see that the railing curves away from the boys, and its sense of enclosure is behind, not around them. When the high-angle camera pulls away it also swivels, re-tracing the arc of the balustrading.
Visually, even as we see Heart and Li Ming drawing closer, the forest of bars that we saw around them earlier is peeling away – even as they sit by the symbols of their own imprisonment, they are each other's freedom and release. 💖
Tumblr media
(above) Ep.3 [1I4] 9.45
And suffused through the scene is the cool-toned lighting – it can't be real moonlight, but it's been designed to look like it.
Heart and Li Ming are awash in the glow of an unseen moon – beaming ever bright and out of reach beyond the bars around them, it's a metaphor for the beacons beyond their own restricted worlds that signal a promise of better lives outside their own.
But even as it illuminates their private moment here, that same moon shining through their prison bars is also casting long, ominous lines onto their very selves, heightening the sense of foreboding and hinting perhaps at more shadows to come...

Cryptic Commissions: The Wicker Man
I can be commissioned to do a mini review of any horror film of your choosing for $3/£2.36 on Ko-fi!
Tumblr media
Remake of: The Wicker Man (1973) Year: 2006 Genre: Occult Rating: PG-13 Country: United States Language: English Runtime: 1 hour 42 minutes
Tumblr media
Director: Neil LaBute Cinematographer: Paul Sarossy Editor: Joel Plotch Composer: Angelo Badalamenti Writer: Neil LaBute Cast: Nicolas Cage, Molly Parker, Kate Beahan, Ellen Burstyn, Leelee Sobieski
Tumblr media
Summary: A detective searches for a missing girl on a pagan cult’s private island.
Review: A prime example of a remake that fundamentally does not understand what made its source material work, this is a dull, incoherent mess punctuated by occasional hilarity.
Overall Rating: 1/5
Tumblr media
Story: 1/5 - Void of tension or scares, it exchanges the original’s commentary on the dangers of blindly following religion—be it Catholicism or paganism—for a weirdly sexist, plot hole-riddled mystery where Nicolas Cage punches a woman in the face while wearing a bear suit.
Performances: 2/5 - Most of the actresses give the same performance, as if the only way for a woman to be ominous is if she’s stiff, cold, and bitchy. Cage, meanwhile, comes off like an incompetent, hammy nutjob.
Tumblr media
Cinematography: 3.5/5 - The movie generally looks quite good, with a strong framing and aerial shots, but it also feels just a little too polished and commercial.
Editing: 2/5 - Bizarre and unintentionally disorienting.
Music: 2/5 - Cliche.
Sets: 3.5/5
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 2/5 - Some of it is serviceable but many of the islanders' outfits, meant to appear homemade and rustic, look like they came from a cheap party store.

Trigger Warnings:
Moderate but brief violence
Child endangerment and implied death
Misogynistic undertones
Animal cruelty and death
Insects

I wrote an 1100-word review/essay about Dunkirk (2017) on a whim. Please enjoy.
-
-All we did is survive.
-That’s enough.
I don’t know if I can truly articulate just how much I adore this film, but I’ll try.
I’ll start with the tone. The tension is palpable from the first frame to the last. Even in the seemingly calm moments, the unease remains. Something seems off, or you sense the possibility that at any moment things can go horribly wrong. One can only sustain a suspenseful tone for so long, and Dunkirk is the perfect length for it.
The score and sound design do a lot to maintain that tone. The first two or three times I saw this film, I quite literally jumped at the first round of gunfire. The scream of the Stukas is terrifying, and the screams of soldiers under attack are jarring. Even when things are quiet, sound is a dead giveaway for things to come, whether it’s the barely perceptible rustle of an oncoming torpedo or trickles of water escalating to a flooded ship. The score is more about mood than melody. The use of tritones and the Shepard tone illusion add to the unease and tension, and the momentary triumph in the score as the little ships arrive feels so incredibly earned. This even continues through the end credits, with the score beginning with the more triumphant music and ending with Shivering Soldier’s leitmotif.
The cinematography is immaculate, from the aerial shots to the close-ups to the lighting to the blue and yellow color palette. I like the different timelines and the way they all come together for the climax and resolution. Everyone in the cast delivers a top-notch performance. And the minimal dialogue is so realistic. I love that there are no eloquent speeches or monologues. I love that we hear Churchill’s speech not through Churchill’s mouth but through a monotone reading from an exhausted Tommy. Collins and Farrier only communicate in compliance with RAF protocol. The communication among Tommy, Gibson, and Alex is largely nonverbal, mostly through glances and nods. The most verbal characters (Mr. Dawson, Peter, and George) are the ones who have known each other the longest. The first time I watched Dunkirk, I don’t think I noticed that Gibson hadn’t said anything until Alex pointed it out, but I guess that goes to show the effectiveness of the minimal dialogue.
A common criticism of the film, at least in 2017, is that the characters are poorly defined. I have never shared that issue. Despite the lack of extensive backstory – and, in some cases, the lack of names – for everyone except the Dawsons and George, I found myself deeply invested in every character the first time I saw this film back in July 2017, and I have found myself becoming even more invested over time. One video essay I saw says the characters in the film are defined by their actions, and I think that’s a very accurate assessment. We see that Gibson is resourceful. Collins is not as experienced as Farrier. Farrier’s stoic veneer occasionally cracks. Shivering Soldier appears to have been confident and practical prior to his traumatic event. Commander Bolton is calm and authoritative. Colonel Winnant keeps his composure despite his growing stress and despair. Tommy is aware of his surroundings. Alex is prone to paranoia and low self-esteem. Plus every character is driven by the inherently human need to survive and/or to help others. All of this is more than enough to get me invested.
Speaking of help, this film is filled with small but impactful moments of kindness. Tommy helps Gibson bury a body, and Gibson offers him water once the deed is done. Civilians offer food, tea, blankets, life jackets, and words of encouragement to weary soldiers. Soldiers treat dead bodies floating in the water with deference. Collins greets Peter with “Afternoon” after Peter rescues him. Mr. Dawson’s first action after rescuing Shivering Soldier is to ask him his name. Peter later lies to that same soldier to protect his feelings. No one can do anything to make this horrible situation go away, but everyone does what little they can to make the situation a little more bearable.
And I would be remiss if I didn’t talk at some length about Shivering Soldier, my favorite character from this film and one of my favorite characters period. He had my heart from the moment I saw him crouched atop the hull of the sunken ship, and my love for him has only grown over time. He doesn’t get a name, but he does get his own track in the score. We have only a vague idea of the trauma he’s experienced, but the flashback scene tells us it must have been something truly horrific. I’ve heard a couple of people say they didn’t even realize it was the same character at first. It is horrifying to think about his journey from escape to near death to rescue only to be forced to return to the hell from which he so desperately needs to escape. And as someone who survived multiple traumatic events in a span of about 13 months, I find myself relating almost uncomfortably to him.
I can’t speak highly enough about Cillian Murphy’s performance. He may not have terribly many lines, but he tells you everything with his eyes and his body language and the way he retreats into himself and recoils at the slightest provocation. I love that his panic builds up gradually rather than all at once. You know that it’s only a matter of time before he reaches his breaking point, and there’s nothing you can do but watch. And despite his inadvertent killing of George, I adore how sympathetic the film is to him. Mr. Dawson is so kind to him and tells George (and the audience by extension) that the soldier is traumatized, not cowardly. When Peter lies to the soldier and says George will be okay, Mr. Dawson nods approvingly. And when Mr. Dawson notices him trembling after the last-ditch Stuka attack, he helps him up and gives him a comforting pat on the shoulder. I don’t know, it’s just refreshing and comforting to see a traumatized character portrayed with such humanity and treated with such compassion.
This film is about a catastrophic defeat and people trapped in this hell when attempt after attempt to escape ends in disaster, but there is kindness to be found even in these horrible circumstances. And I just find that moving. And that’s why, despite the endless anxiety this film gives me, I consider it a comfort movie. I will never tire of it.

Response 1: West Side Story
Tumblr media
In Robert Wise's West Side Story (1961), Lauren Davine's analysis in "Could We Not Dye It Red at Least? Color and Race in West Side Story" sheds light on the interplay of race and color within the film. One particularly striking scene that resonates with Davine's insights is the dance at the gym. Amidst the vibrant colors and energetic movements, the racial tension between the Jets and Sharks becomes palpable through formal cinematic elements.
Tumblr media
The mise-en-scène, with its contrasting costumes and settings, visually reinforces the racial divide. The Sharks, clad in bold, colorful attire, stand out against the Jets' more subdued clothing. Cinematography also plays a crucial role, framing the dancers in ways that emphasize their racial affiliations.
Davine's examination of color symbolism enriches the analysis of this sequence. The choice of colors in the costumes and set design transcends mere aesthetics, serving as a visual manifestation of the racial tensions embedded in the narrative. The dance at the gym thus becomes a microcosm of the broader societal conflicts portrayed in West Side Story.
Moreover, the film doesn't rush into storytelling but begins with a continuous aerial shot, presenting the towering skyscrapers of New York City as if they were primal jungles made of steel and concrete, seemingly accusing the audience. Contemporary humans seem to abide by the law of the jungle, akin to beasts in their adherence to survival of the fittest, implying the city's ruthlessness. This resonates with the subsequent turf wars and conflicts between the two major gangs, hinting at the unforgiving nature of the city. Furthermore, under the influence of mass industrial production, humanity is neglected, with the absence of previous humanistic concerns, rendering individuals as tiny and invisible as mere debris amid the overwhelming products of industrialization.

Just finished this movie. I'm not a movie-buff and this is only like, the second non-English language European movie I'm watching and honestly? It's intriguing but meh. There's a girl-pigeon here called Helga who escaped a seller's cage and meets Mališa and we're treated to the bird version of a very generic she-was-a-girl he-was-a-boy story. Idk if it even passes the Bechdel test because it's very difficult to tell the sex of all the pigeons pecking around. Towards the climax Helga becomes a pivotal character but apart from that she's basically just there to further the male pigeon's experience. Granted, it portrays a major historical event in a novel way that manages to contribute to our understanding of it but they could have easily done it without the formulaic Hollywood portrayal of gender involving BIRDS 🙄. Ehhh might be worth watching for the aerial cinematography at least.

📂 ⒼⓔⓣⒾⓣⒽⓔⓡⓔ    ▶▶ https://tinyurl.com/waves2109
Plot Summary:
The film centers around the Williams family, particularly the teenage siblings Tyler (played by Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and Emily (played by Taylor Russell), and their tumultuous journey through life's highs and lows. Tyler, a popular high school wrestler, grapples with the pressure to excel both on and off the mat under the watchful eye of his demanding father, Ronald (played by Sterling K. Brown). Emily, on the other hand, navigates her own challenges while trying to find her identity and purpose amidst the chaos of her family dynamics.
The narrative takes a dramatic turn when an unforeseen tragedy strikes, shattering the family's fragile facade and sending them spiraling into a whirlwind of emotions. As they struggle to come to terms with their grief and guilt, each member of the family embarks on a personal journey of self-discovery and redemption, ultimately finding solace and reconciliation in the power of love and forgiveness.
Visuals and Soundtrack:
One of the most striking aspects of "Waves" is its visually stunning cinematography, which expertly captures the raw intensity of the characters' emotions and the lush beauty of the Florida landscape. From sweeping aerial shots of sun-drenched beaches to intimate close-ups that capture every subtle nuance of the actors' performances, each frame is meticulously crafted to evoke a visceral response from the audience.
Complementing the film's visuals is a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack that weaves seamlessly throughout the narrative, enhancing the emotional resonance of each scene. The eclectic mix of genres, ranging from ambient electronic beats to soul-stirring orchestral arrangements, serves to underscore the film's themes of love, loss, and redemption, leaving a lasting impression long after the credits roll.
Performances:
The ensemble cast of "Waves" delivers powerhouse performances that breathe life into their complex characters and elevate the film to new heights. Kelvin Harrison Jr. delivers a tour-de-force performance as Tyler, perfectly capturing the character's inner turmoil and vulnerability as he grapples with the weight of his own expectations and the expectations of others. Taylor Russell shines as Emily, imbuing her character with a quiet strength and resilience that belies her outward fragility.
Sterling K. Brown delivers a nuanced portrayal of Ronald, the patriarch of the Williams family, whose stoic facade hides a deep well of pain and regret. Renée Elise Goldsberry delivers a standout performance as Catherine, Ronald's wife and the matriarch of the family, whose unwavering love and support provide a beacon of hope in the darkest of times.
Themes and Impact:
At its core, "Waves" is a deeply human story that explores the universal themes of love, loss, and redemption with a rare authenticity and depth. Through its multi-layered narrative and richly drawn characters, the film challenges its audience to confront their own preconceptions and biases, while also offering a message of hope and healing in the face of adversity.
The film's exploration of family dynamics, particularly the relationships between parents and children, is both poignant and thought-provoking, inviting viewers to reflect on their own experiences and relationships. By juxtaposing the outwardly perfect facade of the Williams family with the internal struggles and conflicts that lie beneath the surface, "Waves" underscores the importance of empathy, understanding, and forgiveness in navigating the complexities of human relationships.
Final Verdict:
In conclusion, "Waves" is a cinematic tour de force that deserves to be celebrated for its bold storytelling, breathtaking visuals, and powerhouse performances. Trey Edward Shults has crafted a film that transcends genre conventions to deliver a deeply human story that resonates on a profound emotional level. Whether you're a fan of drama, romance, or simply great filmmaking, "Waves" is a must-see experience that will leave you breathless and profoundly moved.

I watched the first episode of Deep Night last night. It was okay (I usually don’t expect much from a first episode).
The visuals, though. And the aerial routines! 👌🏼
This might turn into one of those shows I watch for the visuals only (cinematography, sets, lighting, etc.). I need more episodes to see if the plot is interesting. But the visuals are definitely doing things to me.

Harry Houdini in The Grim Game (Irvin Willat, 1919)
Cast: Harry Houdini, Thomas Jefferson, Ann Forrest, Augustus Phillips, Tully Marshall, Arthur Hoyt, Mae Busch, Edward Martin, Jane Wolfe. Screenplay: Arthur B. Reeve, John Grey, Walter Woods, Irvin Willat. Cinematography: Frank M. Blount, J.O. Taylor. Art direction: Harry Oliver.
In The Grim Game, perhaps the best of his ventures into the movies, Harry Houdini escapes from all sorts of things: handcuffs, shackles, a straitjacket, a bear trap, and even a plane crash. But the one thing he can't escape from is the movie's incredibly snarled plot. Houdini plays Harvey Hanford (apt alliteration's artful aid), a reporter for a newspaper that's on the verge of going out of business unless its owner (Augustus Phillips) can get the money he needs from a skinflint backer (Thomas Jefferson). So Hanford cooks up a plot to have the old miser, who just happens to have a lovely ward (Ann Forrest) with whom Hanford is smitten, taken off to a retreat by a showgirl (Mae Busch) posing as a nurse. Then Hanford will plant traces suggesting that the old man has been murdered for his money -- traces that incriminate Hanford. The reason for all this is a little screwy: Hanford has been working on a story about people unjustly convicted on the basis of circumstantial evidence, though what that has to do with getting the backer to pony up isn't clear. What Hanford doesn't reckon with is the fact that the newspaper owner and his cronies, a lawyer (Tully Marshall) and a doctor (Arthur Hoyt), have their own reasons for wanting the old man dead, so when he's found murdered, Hanford becomes the prime suspect. Got that? The whole thing is an excuse to show off Houdini's stunts, but he was not a very interesting film actor. Whatever charisma he had on stage was lost in close-ups, revealing him as a balding middle-aged man with an overbite that reminds me of a Simpsons character. The film was long thought to be lost, but it had been carefully preserved by a collector, and the restored version, in remarkably good shape, was shown publicly for the first time after 96 years in 2015. The movie's highlight, other than seeing the actual Houdini at work, is some remarkable aerial photography and stunt work that resulted in an accidental mid-air plane collision being caught on film. The planes managed to land safely: The crash shown in the movie is staged.
