Tired of Sims 2 Part-Time Job Hours? TRY THIS
3-6, 3-6, 3-6 WHYYY ... I mean, I know why, it's because part-time jobs were allowed for teens, and they were in school before 1.
But it's still annoying when I just wanted my Sim to have a part-time job when her son is in school.
So here is an edit of the Education career that came with Sims 2 Seasons. It allows Sims a part-time job that is in the mornings! I can release more if people need me to, or other career-related requests. I would love to write a custom career ... I have an idea for "WooHoo Worker" but not gross ... like actually Sim-y and grounded in their world and fun!
The only things I edited in this career was the build-up of Vacation Days - which was strangely the same as a full-time career (I'm going to have to check if this is vanilla coding for other careers) - the hours and the skill needed to progress to level 2, Teacher's Aide, requiring 1 point of Cleaning instead of nothing. And I think I tweaked the weekly schedule as well.
It's the same Teen-Elder Part-Time Career as in vanilla Sims 2. The chance cards were actually written right this time! Imagine that (EA pleaseee I love you so much)
When choosing this custom career using the newspaper, computer, shift clicking the newspaper with boolprop testingcheatsenabled true, or any other way of selecting a career, the career is simply named "Education (Mornings)"
This career has a new GUID and shouldn't overwrite any other careers. The reason I did this is because I still wanted players, and myself, to be able to have teens work at a job afterschool as well!
I can upload another mod with a career that OVERWRITES the Education part-time career if you don't want a lot of careers clogging your selection, if requested.
Requirements: At least Sims 2 Seasons
Conflicts: Careers with the same GUID as mine which is 0xD243BFD1
Job Description:
Playground monitor 10 am - 1 pm
Teacher's Aide - 8 am- 11 am
Substitute Teacher 8 am - 12 pm
Have fun!
Below is a link to a folder on my SimFileShare. It contains my two Uni career edits, Natural Science and Oceanography, as well as my Part-Time Education (Mornings) Career.

QUIRK
Seika’s Quirk is called Cyan Spiral. It’s an Emitter-type Quirk that lets her create fast-moving, flexible spirals of blue-tinted condensed air starting from her shoulders going outward. However, as her Quirk affects the pressure, movement, and quality of the air around her, she has trouble breathing while using it.
PERSONALITY
Seika is a very sweet and academically smart girl. While social situations tend to fluster and confuse her, she's able to discern emotions of the people closest to her very well, often being one of the first to notice if one of the Katsucrew is feeling off. She's also a loving girl, going out of her way to cheer people up and also being one to appreciate the little things in life.
However, Seika is also fiercely protective of the Katsucrew and her little sister, wanting nothing bad to happen to them. She learned martial arts in middle school and how to incorperate her knowledge of plant life into medicinal studies for the sole purpose of protecting and helping others. This is also indicative of how determined she is, as Seika does all she can to further her Rescue Hero studies, so she can be one of the best.
RELATIONSHIPS
Partner(s)
Kate Mito is Seika’s girlfriend. The two are childhood friends and have been together since the second-to-last year of elementary school. They love the other very much and spend as much time together as possible, often spending hours testing out support gear and baking together.
Shioawa Henshuu is Seika’s queerplatonic partner. They met in the first year of junior high and became very close friends. The two now attend the same Hero school, training for hours afterschool to help each other better their techniques and studying together.
Family
Daikikou Itsuyo (大輝煌厳与) is Seika’s mother. She’s a rather strict woman, often criticizing Seika’s grades, relationships, and aspirations. However, she does love her daughter, just not in a traditional way that’s shown outright.
Daikikou Bennosuke (大輝煌勉之助) is Seika’s father. He’s a hardworking man that isn’t often home as a result of being employed at a top Hero Agency in Hokkaido. However, he loves his children greatly, calling Seika and her siblings at least twice a week and setting aside time to visit once a month.
Daikikou Tomo (大輝煌登喪) is Seika’s older brother. She doesn’t know much of him, since he’s worked overseas as a Hero in America since she was young, but she admires him greatly from the stories her parents tell of him.
Daikikou Iru (大輝煌威瑠) is Seika’s little sister. She’s a demanding yet loveable kid that loves to bake and garden with Seika, have playdates with Kanji, and read the fantasy, botanical, and baking books Seika keeps stacked around her room.
Friends
Bakugou Katsuki is one of Seika’s best friends. They knew each other since they were kids, having lived in the same area, but didn’t become friends until the last year of elementary school. They share an intense love for Heroics, and both enjoy hiking, making food together, and training on the weekends.
Agei Ashikari, or Kariage, is one of Seika’s best friends. It took some time for the two to really become close on account of their wildly different personalities, but once they clicked, nothing could keep them from being friends. The two share a love for the least appreciated parts of Heroics, often pairing up together in school along with Henshuu.
Dehisa Yasushi is one of Seika’s friends. While they don’t have all that much in common, they enjoy each other’s unique brand of humor. They have tutoring sessions with the rest of the Katsucrew at least once every week, and Seika often visits the Yasushi family konbini since they, in her words, make the best melonpan.
Obuki Hifue is one of Seika’s friends. As the two of them are the least troublesome of the Katsucrew, they’ve become adept at getting their friends out of trouble and having fun along the way. They bond over their shared social introversion and their love for reading.
Minor Characters
Shou Kazahiko (翔風彦), also known as Buster Hero: Air Jet, the 68th Ranked Pro Hero, is Seika’s Japanese History teacher at Moushou Academy. He’s a rather casual teacher who helps his students as much as he can, making him Seika’s favorite teacher.
Nekoshima Myouou (猫島妙嫗) is Seika’s boss at the cat café she works at. As an older woman, she cares for Seika and the Katsucrew like they’re family, and often offers advice to the struggling teens when they need it. Seika also appreciates the motherly vibe she emanates, as her relationship with her own mother is rather strained.
Ukichirou Takanohashi (鷹嘴烏吉朗) is Seika’s cousin. He attended Aldera Junior High in the same class with Seika. The two share curly hair and rounded eyes but not much else, and neither really wish to have a closer familal relationship to the disappointment of Seika’s mother.
Shinsou Hitoshi is one of Seika’s acquaintances. While they don’t know much about each other, they met when Shinsou wandered into the Black Cat Café on Seika’s shift. The two bonded rather quickly, often teasing each other over their opposing pet preferences and having hours-long conversations over coffee and pastries about Heroics.

We're brainstorming ideas for the children and teen afterschool programming and the person overseeing programming briefly mentioned maybe using a few of the books we have on coding and come up with something related to that
So ofc I spent the majority of my shift looking online for coding based library activities, specifically for middle schoolers since we're literally across the street from the middle school.
We have books for Scratch and one book on Python which kinda sucks bc Scratch is very much kid-oriented and I have zero experience with Python. Ive only used CSS and HTML lmao. At least with Scratch you just kinda let the kids roam the website and figure things out by themselves.
#rice rambles#i dont vibe with programming while the pandemic is still going but like. its happening whether i like it or not#so i might as well put my 2 cents in.#even though i likely wont be working in the childrens library much at all in the future

The Bias List
@avatarfantxsy @quyennie @despairandjo I decided to just list them. I need to make a separate post for bands tho. (that was a lie almost as fat as me) So in this bias list I will only list groups that I listen to. The last bias list I posted there were a lot of groups that I hadn’t listened to yet so this one will just be the groups I know of. I have a few to add, some I have taken off and I will have a section at the end for potential biases. Also some groups have 2-6 biases. For example I literally can’t choose with UP10TION. And sometimes I go back and forth and members in groups so often I’ve somehow tricked my brain into thinking I have more than one. If it’s confusing I promise the first member of each group on the list is definitely a locked bias. And another thing, if the member is specifically on my list of moms or daddies they wont be on here, unless they both

Broad generalizations to follow
Something about middle class white American parenting during the Cold War... a *lot* of those middle class families were first generation middle class.
So you are likely to still have a lot of early 20th century industrial working class values lurking about when Gen X was being raised, coupled with the generational trauma of the Depression and WWII. Add to that the fact that we were subject to early mass media indoctrination in that same generation's "ideal white family" - the continued, repetitive broadcast of Hayes Code era programming during afterschool hours, during a time when little was actually produced for people our age. (We weren't a profitable demographic before we were already adults.)
And add to this Ideal White Family bullshit programming (the subtext of which was a promise that white social conformity and pro-industrialist behavior would have a reward of an Ideal White Family), reaching our teens during the divorce boom of the 80s, and young adulthood during a recession. That's one of many reasons *we* hated *our* grandparent generation. It was like being fed a steady stream of pretty lies and then being told to shut up and eat Grandma's disgusting Good Housekeeping jello tuna salad surprise at every family reunion because "you're lucky enough just to have jello." And then you were made out to be the asshole or called a bad kid if you did see through the lies, it's like nobody was ever supposed to call this bullshit out, ever. If we had (white) activist parents, even *they* would say "don't you dare disrespect your Grandpa/Uncle Bill/etc."
Boomers are Gen Z's broader cultural baggage, but the Silent Generation was ours. That was *our* collective Asshole Grandpa.

What’s Out This Week? 6/8
Sorry for the delay, but here’s all the new hotness out today!
Fortnite/Marvel: Zero War #1 (of 5) - Christos Gage, Sergio Davila & Leinil Yu
The inhabitants on the Island are locked in what seems like a never-ending war, and only one thing has the potential to turn the tide - a crystallized fragment of the Zero Point that was cast into the Marvel Universe. Spider-Man and Wolverine team up with several Fornite fighters and new recruit Shuri to hunt down the elusive Zero Shard. Will these allies be able to find it in time and avert catastrophe? And can the heroes of the Marvel and Fortnite realities hold off the Imagined Order long enough to give them a fighting chance?
Epic Games' Chief Creative Officer, Donald Mustard, teams up with veteran Marvel writer Christos Gage (SPIDER-GEDDON, AVENGERS ACADEMY) and artist Sergio Dávila (CAPTAIN MARVEL) for a five-part crossover event with enormous ramifications for both universes! Each first print issue contains a redeemable code to unlock a bonus digital cosmetic in Fortnite!
LIMIT 1 COVER PER CUSTOMER!
Where Starships Go To Die #1 - Mark Sable, Alberto Locati & Jeremy Haun
Point Nemo - the farthest oceanic point on earth from any landmass. A spacecraft graveyard where rockets and satellites can be safely ditched on the ocean floor. In a near future ravaged by climate change, an African astronaut teams with an Indian shipping magnate to mount a dangerous salvage mission to recover the wreck of humanity's first interstellar starship. But what they find is beyond their worst nightmares.
Skybound Presents Afterschool #1 (of 4) - Justin Benson, Aaron Morehead, Greg Hinkle, Giovanna Niro & Veronica Fish
Morals have eroded. Your kids are out of control. Skybound's new horror anthology is going to teach those teens a lesson. In the debut issue, JUSTIN BENSON & AARON MOREHEAD (Marvel Studios' Moon Knight) and GREG HINKLE present a standalone cautionary tale soaked in blood and tears. Nora's anxiety prevented her from approaching high school with any degree of confidence-that is, until she adopted Janie, an emotional support dog with a winning smile and a killer secret. But just how far will Nora go to keep her new life?
Astronaut Down #1 - James Patrick & Rubine
Douglas Spitzer wants to be one of the "astronauts" selected for the crucial Mission Politzer. And just like astronauts like Buzz Aldrin and Sally Ride, Douglas is brave, adaptable, and self-sacrificing. He's one of the program's best candidates.
But if he qualifies, Douglas won't be traveling through space; he'll be launched into alternate realities on a desperate mission to save Earth from a horrific crisis that has our world on the brink of extinction. Unfortunately, it's a mission where everything will go wrong, where Doug-las's training and very humanity will be put to the test, and where a deep-seeded secret could sabotage everything.
Potions Inc #1 (of 5) - Erik Burnham, Stelladia & Natasha Alterici
The call of adventure always seems to hang up whenever Randelgast Jones tries to answer it, leaving him facing the dull future of working in his family's successful potion shop. But when a powerful artifact is stolen from his parents and puts them under a terrible curse, Ran finally gets the quest he's been after his whole life. He and his siblings set off to find the missing artifact - and its trail leads them from their homeland of Primaterra to the very strange realm of... Earth.
Orcs! The Curse #1 (of 4) - Christine Larsen
The fun and fantastical ORCS! series from creator Christine Larsen (Adventure Time) returns with a new installment featuring our favorite underdog heroes: Bog, Pez, Zep, Utzu, and Gurh! After returning from their travels and celebrating with a dance party, a prank gone wrong inadvertently unleashes something ancient and evil. Even worse, in a tower in the middle of a dark forest, a wizard with grand, sinister plans needs a real army, and his sight turns toward the Orcish tribe...
Namekawa-san Won’t Take A Licking! GN Vol 1 - Rie Ato
A hilarious and adversarial yuri series where a newbie delinquent faces off against the head of the disciplinary committee! After putting up with years of bullying in junior high, Namekawa-san decides to make a preemptive strike when she starts high school. Her plan? Become a delinquent! At first, everything seems to be going great-her classmates are terrified. However, the head of the disciplinary committee is unfazed. She's got her eye on Namekawa-san, and she refuses to look away in this explosive yuri comedy!
The Ward #1 (of 4) - Cavan Scott & Andres Ponce
From the writer of Star Wars: The High Republic comes an intense medical drama brimming with fairies, trolls, and real human pathos. St. Lilith's is a secret hospital for supernatural creatures. The personnel are overworked and the facility is underfunded. It's a place, and a life, Dr. Nat Reeves thought she left behind. Until a wounded woman (with a tail) appears on her doorstep.
Whatcha scooping up this week, Fantomites?

Okay this gives me an idea for an Owl House new parents/modern AU fic where Eda and Raine are married and reminiscent of Stef and Lena from The Fosters (if you’ve never seen that show, it’s a drama about a lesbian couple known for adopting and fostering several kids).
Raine: The disciplinarian/authoritarian. Tries to make sure the kids always eat healthy, balanced meals, puts them in all the programs and extracurriculars (think music classes, afterschool sports, summer reading courses, etc.), and always playing music in the house (the kids are NOT allowed to touch their [Raine’s] instruments without their permission). Raine 100% speaks Spanish (or Quecha or Portuguese, ik they’re coded as Latinx/Hispanic but not sure of origin/descent) in the house. Raine definitely helps the kids with their homework and is always willing to stay up late to make 3 dozen cupcakes for the bake sale. Definitely a PTA parent and keeps everyone on schedule with activities, appointments, birthdays, etc. Eda: 100% the laissez faire, edgy, alt or hippie mom who lets her kids dress themselves, stay up late, and watch PG 13 movies before they’re actually 13. Fiercely protective and sensitive. She’s not above fighting kids that harass hers, or going on long rants to rude parents or faculty about how her family is valid and if they talk about her partner again it’s OVER. The kids and their friends love her cuz she’s a “cool”, non-traditional mom. The other parents think she does witchcraft. She usually buys store bought goods for the school bake sales cuz she’s so busy working and will tell the kids that life is the best teacher. When the kids become teens, she practically offers them their first drinks and openly talks about her wild teen years and Raine has to ask her AGAIN to stop suggesting the children try weed.
I can't wait to see Raine's ass safe in their new (owl) house

locker bughead au
this is being written at 2am by a girl whos high on coffee
-----------------------------------
the start -----------------------------------
-----------------------------------
he stuffed things from his backpack into his locker sighing, the day for jughead had been going by really slowly and he wasn’t enjoying it. he had been called on too many times today during class and he had gotten shoved when he was trying to walk to his locker by those stupid jocks. jughead prayed to whatever was making his day suck to not do anything else to make it worse.
“jughead?”
he quietly groaned and turned to identify who had just spoken to him. realizing who it was he straightened his posture a little bit.
“betty? what do you want?” he asked. jughead was surprised the blonde was even speaking to him. they were basically complete opposites, plus she was way more well known in school than he was. she smiled sweetly and her eyes seemed to sparkle a bit.
“the school said that they were running low on lockers, so they assigned me to share one with you!” she said cheerfully. jughead raised an eyebrow and eyed her, she seemed too excited over this. it felt like a forced intention of being kind, which humored him. he knew she’d rather be sharing lockers with anyone else, especially archie andrews.
he decided to shrug and continue to stuff things into his messy locker, he probably would barely even see the girl. nothing he could do about it anyways.
-----------------------------------
“betty cooper!” he yelled in frustration. jughead’s messy locker was now neat and organized.
“oh, hi juggie! like the locker? my stuff on the bottom and yours on the top, binders are also color coded in order of colors in the raindow!” betty said smiling. jughead was deciding if he should be mad or be mad.
“listen betts, this is cute and all,” he couldnt help but notice betty go a little pink at what he meant to be a sarcastic comment, “but i like my stuff the way it was before.” jughead said sighing.
“but before you took a long time to get stuff out of your locker! now it’s quicker!” she said in defense stomping her foot.
jughead rolled his eyes and muttered a whatever while grabbing his math binder and heading off to class.
-----------------------------------
jughead opened his locker and furrowed his eyebrows at a note that fell out. he picked it up off the floor and unfolded it.
“pop’s diner friday 6pm, u & me ;) -archie”
he laughed dryly and shook his head. jughead wanted to throw away the note and just play it off as if betty never received the note, but he couldn’t bring himself to do that.
“heyo juggie, someone send you a love note?” betty appeared and asked in a flirtatious tone.
“yeah, archie. but not for me though.” he said chuckling forcefully while handing betty the note.
“archie? no thanks.” she said rejecting the note. jughead was surprised.
“aren’t you two like not a thing but sorta are?”
no.” she said with a tone of anger in her voice as she shoved her books into her part of the locker.
for some reason, jughead felt kinda relieved.
-----------------------------------
“veronica, jughead. jughead, veronica.” betty said introducing her two friends.
“like the beanie thing you have going on jug.” veronica said giving him her hand to shake. jughead already liked this girl’s vibe.
“thanks, it’s supposed to make me look more into my character of creepy sarcastic teen boy.” he winked at her.
veronica giggled and smiled to betty, “i like him.”
betty forced a smile and nodded, “knew you would.”
“hey betts how about i share a locker with veronica and you take hers? then everyone’s happy!” jughead joked and laughed. but before betty could respond to him veronica replied,
“oh no jughead, i wouldn’t want to steal betty’s b o y f r i e n d.”
betty and jughead quickly looked at one another and turned red. seconds later they were both speaking at once, telling veronica how much they hated each other.
pov
-----------------------------------
change
“wanna go to pop’s diner afterschool?”
betty looked up feeling her heart race, honestly she’d love to hang out with jughead. she felt as if she had this weird connection with him. but she could barely speak to him in school for the short amount of time they shared at the locker, but imagine the struggle of only talking at the diner?
“sure! i love their milkshakes!” she blurted cheerfully.
jughead seemed to smile quickly and nod. “okay, i’ll meet you at pop’s right after last period.”
“actually,” betty bit her lip, “you want to meet here? at the locker? and walk to pop’s together?”
this time, jughead didn’t quickly smile, it stuck to his face as he quietly said “yeah okay.” and looked down.
later on betty and jughead would share a plate of fries and talk for hours.
-----------------------------------
“homecoming huh?” jughead asked as he walked with betty to their locker.
“always thought i’d go with archie.” she said shrugging and look at andrews himself as they walked past him.
“i did too.” jughead responded dramatically wiping fake tear. betty laughed and gently shoved jughead.
“i’m going to show up with no date, and probably dance with kevin.” betty said upset and putting her bag down as jughead opened their locker.
“you know,”
“what?”
“we could always go together...” jughead said looking into betty’s eyes.
this caused betty to stop breathing for a second. she needed to say yes, but she wasn’t thinking correctly. had jughead finally got the hint? she was bout to tell him yes when he spoke again.
“as friends of course.” he said shrugging and looking down.
her heart broke.
“better than going alone.” she joked and elbowed her f r i e n d.
“so you and i?” he asked half smiling.
“you and i, juggie.”
pov
-----------------------------------
change
jughead waited for the blonde girl at the doors to the dance. maybe she stood him up? no way. that wasn’t like betty. what if she got in traffic? oh god, that would be bad. and then she didn’t make it until after the whole dance? should he even be waiting outside of the doors? is that creepy? suddenly his eyes landed on a goddess walking towards him.
betty had worn a periwinkle dress that ended right above her knees, and had curled her hair so it bounced with every step she took. he also couldn’t help but notice how well the dress fitted her. she looked...
“beautiful.” jughead muttered out loud when betty approached him.
“oh gosh, thank you juggie. you look quite sharp as well.” she giggled and winked at him.
jughead felt himself blush and quickly locked arms with betty. “shall we enter?”
“we shall.”
they went through the gym doors and were greeted by music blasting through the speakers. as if they were with on time a slow song had began playing. neither of them really had to say anything before they had started dancing.
“im glad i came with you jughead.” betty said in his ear.
“oh shush betts, i know you would’ve came with archie instead of me in a second if you could.” he winked jokingly.
“don’t kid yourself, and if i came with archie i wouldn’t be enjoying it as much as i’m about to enjoy it with you.”
“why? what’s bout to happen?” jughead asked smiling.
betty titled her head to the side and slowly leaned in.
jughead sorta freaked out on the inside but was able to kiss betty cooper back calmly. he felt sparks, and he understands that’s something cheesy people say in books and movies but now he understood. he understood what a spark was, what chemistry really meant. and yes, he does remember how much he didn’t really enjoy betty when they first met through sharing lockers. and no, he wasn’t in love with her. but he felt something. and he didn’t want that something to end. but the actual kiss did have to end though.
“wow that was-” jughead started to respond to betty but was cut off.
“you better say amazing because i had to work up so much courage to do that juggie! i have liked you for what, four months? and you’ve never got the hint? knowing you i wouldn’t be surprised if you said to me ‘well that was a wonderful f r i e n d kiss!’” betty said in an annoyed tone while she furrowed her eyebrows. jughead found it quite adorable.
instead of replying to her rant he just put his hand on her cheek and kissed her again, not as a friend of course. as a future c o u p l e he hoped.

A fun guide to programming for kids & teens or adults who want to help kids learn to code.
What you’ll learn
Program 6 different video games and interactive art projects.
Figure out how to experiment with Scratch to continue learning.
Share and show off their projects to others in the Scratch community.
Help others discover and learn programming techniques in Scratch.
Requirements
How to use a mouse (right-clicking, dragging).
Typing proficiency is helpful but not required.
No previous programming experience is needed.
Description
Scratch is the best educational programming software for kids available today. With Scratch, you can create games and interactive art projects all while having lots of fun!
Designed by the MIT Media Lab’s Lifelong Kindergarten Group for 8 to 16 year olds, Scratch is a free programming environment that runs in your web browser. But Scratch users consist of people of all ages, including younger children with their parents. The software makes it easy for anyone to start developing their programming and problem-solving skills.
I’m Al Sweigart, the author of several programming books for kids and beginners. This course follows the content of my latest book Scratch Programming Playground, which you can read for free online under a Creative Commons license. This is my second Udemy course following my highly-rated “Automate the Boring Stuff with Python Programming”.
This course (and supplemental book) covers the creation of several classic games like brick Breaker, Snake, and Fruit Ninja. Instead of memorizing a list of programming concepts, you’re guided through making these games and picking up programming concepts on the way. The lectures follow the 6 game and computer art projects, along with additional content on debugging and experimenting with Scratch.
This course won’t make you a software engineer or app developer, but it can provide kids with fun activities and give parents and K-12 teachers the training they need to help children learn to code. By the end of this course, you’ll have a solid understanding of Scratch and its community of millions of users.
Who this course is for:
Kids ages 8 to 16 who want to make fun programming projects.
Parents who want to help their kids learn to program.
Teachers, including non-technical instructors, who want to guide afterschool coding clubs.
This is not an introduction to becoming a app developer or professional software engineer.

Just wait for confirmation hearings in the age of Facebook
If you thought the calendar defense was bizarre, brace yourself for the next couple of decades.
After an emotionally tense day—for both witnesses, albeit in different ways—many senators and onlookers may feel we’ve collectively come away from the Brett Kavanaugh/Christine Blasey Ford testimony having made little headway in the quest for the truth. Both Kavanaugh and Ford testified to the judiciary committee that they were 100 percent confident in their recollections of the day, each of which necessarily disputes the other’s. But Kavanaugh may have spoken the most profound truth in his opening statement when he characterized the last few weeks as a “calculated and orchestrated political hit” by Democrats to thwart his confirmation. He said:
“This is a circus. The consequences will extend long past my nomination. The consequences will be with us for decades. This grotesque and coordinated character assassination will dissuade confident and good people of all political persuasions from serving our country.”
He’s right, in many ways: The consequences matter. The consequences of his confirmation to the court, or his failure to be confirmed, will matter to a great number of cases yet to be decided by that judiciary body. The consequences of these senators’ behavior and comportment will be remembered by voters in November and for many election cycles to come. These consequences of this particular precedent, whichever way it goes, will be of great significance for decades, just as Ford has grappled with the consequences—or sequelae—of a single night in 1982 for the past 36 years.
The consequences of what he portrays as a “coordinated character assassination,” though, are just the beginning of technology’s expanding influence in modern American politics.
…
When Kavanaugh came forward with a defense from his summer 1982 calendar, many were shocked and suspicious. It is peculiar (but not unheard of) for a high school boy to keep a meticulous, handwritten calendar of his activities at all, let alone to retain that document for the foreseeable future.
But in reality, many present-day 17-year-olds are actively participating in that practice, willingly or otherwise. In the age of Facebook, Instagram (and Finstagram), Twitter, Tumblr, Kik, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, YouNow, and dozens of other social media sites and apps, there actually can be a detailed record of a teenager’s school day, afterschool activities, weekend parties, and breakups and makeups. Many millennials, Gen Xers, and others happily catalog their thoughts and feelings in microblogged diary entries, share photos of their friends and frenemies, and check in to places to mark their precise position for friends. It’s conceivable that you could reconstruct a summer from someone’s social posts from 2007, likely without breaking a sweat.
And as we’ve seen, social posts are increasingly under scrutiny for people in positions of power, celebrities and politicians alike. Daily Show host Trevor Noah was raked over the coals for racist tweets in his archives. Disney fired James Gunn after offensive tweets about rape and pedophilia were brought to light earlier this year. Even President Donald Trump regularly faces criticism for contradicting himself in an old tweet. (If nothing else, our Twitter-happy president has ensured that the significance of tweets will not wane anytime soon.) It is the first place many people look when the name of a mass shooter is released by the media: What did he tweet? Were there warning signs? Should his friends have known this was coming?
Should we expect that a nominee to the Supreme Court in 2024 will need to answer for their 17-year-old self’s tweets and Facebook Likes? (At 51, Neil Gorsuch is the youngest justice currently serving on the Supreme Court, but someone as young as 32 has been confirmed. Joseph Story, who served almost 34 years beginning in 1812, ultimately died having spent more time on the court than off it.) Should a text or a decade-old post on Facebook carry as much weight as that nominee’s statements and actions?
Whether it should is practically irrelevant. We almost certainly will. In criminal trials, we already do.
…
According to American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Life of Teenagers, published in 2016, “ninety-two percent of American children have an online presence before the age of 2.” Facebook boasts 2.25 billion active users on its platform, and it long ago removed the barriers to entry for teens not yet in college. We’re a generation that’s always online, and we have the receipts to prove it.
But what happens when all those status updates, weird Reddit submissions, and moody Myspace photos become part of the public discourse?
It’s natural to want to have some answers about the content of someone’s character before handing them the reins to a government seat. Especially in the wake of the Me Too movement, there’s increased attention being paid to past indiscretions that, a generation or two ago, might never have seen the light of day. And that was before we started documenting our every move on public platforms, from #wokeuplikethis to lights out.
Sometimes, that immediately available level of detail could prove quite valuable. Many senators mentioned during yesterday’s testimony the power of “exculpatory evidence.” Could enough updates and check-ins from social media effectively have proven Kavanaugh wasn’t the man behind Ford’s assault? Or, to tip the scales toward Ford’s recollection, what if there were an Instagram video showing Kavanaugh and Mark Judge laughing about holding her down on that bed? There’s not, of course, and there never will be. But in a future version of this conversation and inquiry, the statements from Kavanaugh’s friends might read quite differently. “We don’t remember that happening” gets harder to stand by in the face of mounting evidence from countless classmates online.
…
There are plenty of problems with bringing this information into court proceedings and job interviews. Beyond the obvious questions about consent and invasions of privacy, there’s also concern about accuracy. There can be plenty of room for misinterpretation: Text lacks the nuance of spoken word, making it difficult to distinguish the connotation of simple updates. Is that tweet a suicide threat, a thoughtless life update, a sarcastic aside, an inside joke, or a pop culture reference? No one knows.
Online personas aren’t perfect, nor are they always accurate representations of the person in question. Some users intentionally misrepresent themselves on social media in order to convey a curated self who is more successful, attractive, intelligent, and so on. Countless articles have been written about the significance of this performative behavior.
So sometimes, social media will inevitably lead us to the wrong conclusions. Not that it stops people from trying to connect dots where they can. As the analysis moves to social platforms and more available social data enters the court of public opinion, it’s democratized in sometimes dangerous ways: Redditors infamously misidentified two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013, leading one man to be bullied at school. An Anonymous Twitter account claimed to have the correct suspect in the Ferguson shooting in 2014, too, but it was also wrong.
…
But the human inclination toward curiosity and our desire for answers will not rest. The entry of social media accounts into governmental proceedings is inevitable. And ultimately, it’s just an extension of our innate curiosity.
Some people livestreaming the Kavanaugh/Ford testimony might have thought some senators pushed too far in their personal queries. When Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) pried with “Did you ever black out from drinking too much alcohol?” Kavanaugh himself snapped back “Did you?” But that intense line of personal questioning is not unique to this hearing.
Consider the following example questions, prepared for prosecutor Kenneth Starr by his deputy during the impeachment proceedings of then-President Clinton:
“If Monica Lewinsky says that you ejaculated into her mouth on two occasions in the Oval Office area, would she be lying?
“If Monica Lewinsky says that you masturbated into a trashcan in your secretary’s office, would she [be] lying?”
These are deeply personal questions, disgusting ones, and detailed ones, and they are questions that the president would have been expected to answer under oath.
They were also written by Brett Kavanaugh.
With more detail available, we’re only going to go deeper down the rabbit hole.
…
In 1991, when Anita Hill testified about sexual harassment before the confirmation of Justice Clarence Thomas, the hearings were decidedly not livestreamed on YouTube. The senators hosting the inquiry did not immediately have their personal information doxed online—not least because the World Wide Web was still a very nascent thing, and the word “doxed” had yet to be coined.
Within our lifetimes, technology has completely unturned modern politics. Politicians are still struggling to keep up with the ramifications of streaming services on copyright law and the city codes restricting Airbnb, let alone contending with net neutrality, with gig economy workers’ rights, and with this newfound deluge of information known as social media.

Maybe we’ll be spared. Maybe the privacy pendulum will swing the other way and all this concern will have been for naught. Indeed, some teens have begun to distance themselves from the neverending news feed, electing to keep their accounts private or limited, if not unplugging outright. The kids of Generation Z are disconnecting for a variety of reasons, including the concern that more time on social media leads to increased anxiety, stress, and depression; more than half of them take a break from their phones from time to time.
So perhaps by the time we’re picking another nominee for the Supreme Court, the laws will have sufficiently caught up, or the personal privacy settings will have been sufficiently clamped down, and the nominee will be spared the painstaking entry of each of their social updates into evidence.
But there’s not much time to get it right: Two of the sitting justices are in their eighties, and it’s likely another seat will open up before lawmakers have figured out how to balance the pursuit of the truth with the modern tendency toward oversharing on public platforms.
In the meantime, the “politics of personal destruction” are about to get a lot more personal. And that’s the truth.
