BREAKING - AND NOW THERE ARE THE EMAILS TO PROVE IT.
Trump has been on a vendetta against the State of Maine, in a personal revenge campaign against Governor Janet Mills.
Trump clashed with Mills at a White House event for the National Governors Association back on February 20th.
As he boasted he was ending the participation of transitioned students in women's sports, he singled her out and demanded that Maine comply with his order. There is only one such student athlete in the entire state.
Mills replied that Maine's schools were complying with all State and Federal Laws.
GASP. A WOMAN. Speaking back to TRUMP. He was furious.
“Well, we are the federal law,” Trump bawled. “You’d better do it. You’d better do it, because you’re not going to get any federal funding at all if you don’t.”
The Governor was not impressed. She is a former state attorney general and district attorney.
“We’re going to follow the law sir. We’ll see you in court,” she said sternly.
Something like this was like nothing Trump had ever seen before in the history of the world. It was catastophic. It was disgusting. It was NASTY.
“Enjoy your life after governor, because I don’t think you’ll be an elected official afterwards,” Trump snarled.
He could not let go of it. He seethed for the next two days, and even golf at Mar-a-Lala could not distract him. In a late Saturday night rant on X he demanded "a full throated apology" from Mills.
She ignored him.
"This will not end well for the Governor and the people of Maine," said a statement from the White House.
It has not.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Trump’s Department of Education head, wrestling queen Linda McMahon, launched an "inquiry" against Maine's Department of Education last week.
This week, The New York Times reported that Trump’s Department of Agriculture said that it had “frozen federal funding for education programs in Maine, the latest in a barrage of actions targeting the state.”
MSNBC reports that "in case that weren't quite enough National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration sent a letter to Maine cancelling funding for Maine Sea Grant."
Maine Public Radio says that in recent days, both the U.S., Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Education have declared that Maine is violating Title IX. The agencies have given the state 10 days to come into compliance with the Trump administration's interpretation of the law and make other changes or risk referral to the U.S. Department of Justice for additional potential sanctions.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
But besides all of this - from the safety of his chair behind his desk - Trump ordered acting Social Security Administration Commissioner Leland Dudek to don the armor of Truth, Justice and the American Way and had sent HIM for a holy joust against the fearsome Dragon of Maine.
Dudek decided to take out Trump's revenge on new parents and grieving families in Maine.
Leland asked his staff about what contracts Maine had with the Social Security Administration, and he cancelled them.
He ordered the cancellation of the online electronic program that allowed babies to be given Social Security numbers right from the hospital, and the program allowing the hospitals to register deaths by electronic verification.
Huffpost reports: According to their emails, the Social Security staff informed Dudek that canceling the contracts “would result in improper payments and potential for identity theft.”
Dudek told his staff to go for it anyway.
“Please cancel the contracts. While our improper payments will go up, and fraudsters may compromise identities, no money will go from the public trust to a petulant child,” Dudek wrote, referring to Governor Janet Mills.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Canceling the vital records contracts would not only make it more difficult for families to register births and deaths IN PERSON at Social Security offices, it also would make it more difficult for the federal government to track births and deaths in Maine accross ALL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, all of which use Social Security records to prevent improper payments.
And all the agencies let Dudek know it.
Dudek reinstated the contracts in less than 24 hours amid an outcry the agencies, AND from pediatricians, hospitals, funeral directors and Maine’s congressional delegation. He said he hadn’t "intended" to create an “undue burden on the people of Maine,” though his internal emails expressed exactly that.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Wednesday, those emails were obtained by Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.
Rep. Connolly has called on Dudek to resign immediately.
“The acting commissioner of the Social Security Administration should serve the American people, not create waste, fraud, and abuse on the taxpayer’s dime,” Connolly wrote in a letter to Dudek laying out the email traffic.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Dudek is only a Trump appointee, and has not received any official Senate confirmation for the important post he holds.
He had been only a mid-level IT staffer at Social Security when he helped Elon Musk’s DOGE team access sensitive databases inside the agency, which he bragged about on LinkedIn. He was put on administrative leave.
But when the Social Security head resigned in protest, and more senior officials refused to cooperate with Musk’s team, Trump tapped him to lead the agency as acting head.
Last month, Dudek threatened to shut the agency down altogether after a federal judge ordered DOGE affiliates to withdraw from Social Security databases containing sensitive personal information about Americans.
Dudek knows NOTHING about the contracts the federal governments has with the states. He knows NOTHING about what they mean, and he cares NOTHING about the consequences. And he cares NOTHING about making OUR information safe.
He also obviously cares NOTHING about Trump's and Musk's purported crusade to prevent fraud and waste in government.
So far, the Social Security Administration has not responded to calls by the news media for comment.
Neither has the White House...

"Happy Birthday"
Tumblr media
[Beside Mister S's Mystery Shop]
Azul: Now then, however should I go about garnering interest in tomorrow's sale? Oh, who is that I spy over there…?
Azul: Epel-san, hello! This may be a little out of left field, but have you any interest in the Mostro Lounge's latest campaign sale?
Epel: Aaahh!? Oh… Hello, Azul-san. What campaign…?
Azul: You see, tomorrow is my birthday. And I was looking for some way to show how grateful I am towards everyone.
Azul: That's why, for tomorrow only, we've decided to slash our food and drink prices to discount rates at the Mostro Lounge!!
Epel: A discounted rate!? So, how much of a deal would you say we'd be getting?
Azul: Behold! One drink off the drink menu can be ordered for free.
Azul: In addition, all food items are 10% off. Parties of 3 or more will receive 20% off!
Epel: 20% off for groups of 3 or more…!? Awesome! That's good to know. I will definitely come tomorrow!
Azul: Wonderful! I do hope you come with your friends… and of course, your ESTEEMED POMEFIORIAN UPPERCLASSMEN. We await your patronage!
Tumblr media
[Octavinelle Dorm – Azul's Room]
Azul: Both my academic activities and the Lounge's closing duties have finished successfully. I appreciate it when everything ends smoothly like today.
Azul: Now then, what documents do I still have left to look over…? Oh, is this from the Headmage? What could it possibly be?
Azul: A warning regarding the care of the apple trees? Who cares… is what I'd like to say, but if I leave this for later, it could become a bigger problem. I'll send a notification to the others in the dorm.
[message sent beep]
Azul: It looks like there was some trouble between some dormmates… There was a single incident today, between freshmen. It seems those four-person rooms are more prone to these little fights.
Azul: In regards to their individual arguments… Nothing really stands out as dire. I'll just write out a few suggestions on how to handle it going forward and send it on.
Azul: Next, let's look at the Lounge's report… Fufu, today's sales were in top form.
Azul: Our plan for tomorrow should bring us an abundance of customers. We may be selling at a discounted price, but that should be enough to draw in new folk.
Azul: That is, especially if Epel-san is true to his word and brings his dormmates… Specifically Vil-san!
Azul: If we were to slap on a label to every dish he orders as "Vil Schoenheit's recommendation!"…
Azul: There's no way there wouldn't be a massive increase in foot traffic. THIS IS A HUGE CHANCE FOR AN INFLUX OF NEW CUSTOMERS!
Azul: The Lounge's operations for the day will need to change depending on whether he shows up or not. I'll have to double-check all of tomorrow's preparations once again.
Azul: I'll run a few simulations in my mind while showering. All time is precious and should be used efficiently, after all.
Tumblr media
Azul: Heheheh… I've come up with a fantastic plan. With this, tomorrow will be perfectly executed.
Azul: Now I feel I can spend tonight at ease.
Tumblr media
[Octavinelle Dorm – Azul's Room]
Azul: What is the radio playing at this time of night…? Ah, an economics news program. How perfect to play in the background while I finish my assignments.
Azul: Today's Enigmics assignment is rather tough. It'll be good to have something to listen to in between answering questions…
Azul: …Oh, a watchmaker from the Queendom of Roses has a product up for pre-release, I see. I had heard that it was in development…
Azul: As it is the first new product in two years, I'm sure the stock prices will be affected. I should keep it on a watch list as I learn more about stocks.
Azul: …An apparel maker from the Shaftlands is experiencing difficulties? It seems the abnormal climate is the source of the issue… Hm.
Azul: That most likely means that other products may end up affected as well. For example, agricultural products…
Azul: Perhaps I should re-look at the Headmage's missive from earlier. There may be something useful there.
Azul: Oh? This formula looks like… Ah, yes, I should apply what I learned from that other problem. It's much easier to understand when I look at the bigger picture.
Azul: That reminds me, that business proprietor I met at a seminar the other day had mentioned a movie revolving around the person who came up with this very well-known formula.
Azul: It could be a good topic of conversation for the next time we meet, and I may even learn something new.
Azul: I'm sure it would help with this assignment as well, and it would be a good change of pace. I'll play the movie and lower the radio volume…
Azul: Perfect. I'll continue working on reviewing my Enigmics lessons and preparing for next class until the radio program ends at 22:00.
Tumblr media
Azul: …That concludes the radio broadcast. I suppose I should work on "this" while I finish watching the movie.
「Survey on Quality of Life Improvements for the Student Body」
Azul: I've improved any and all issues I've had myself. I can't say I have any real dissatisfaction during my time here, but if I were to pick one thing…
Azul: I suppose it would have to be the troublesome formalities I have to go through to leave Sage's Island.
Azul: Every single time I'd like to attend a business seminar, or a social gathering, I am required to report to and gain approval from the Headmage.
Azul: Not only do I have to jot down the destination and purpose of the visit every single time, but the approval process is much too slow. And the most irritating thing about needing to write these applications in far in advance over and over again…
Azul: Is that even if a highly competitive and sought-after seminar announces that they've increased attendee capacity the day before the event, I couldn't possibly gain approval in time!
Azul: In the first place, why should we go through this whole process just to leave campus? If only they'd trust us students a little more.
Azul: The academy should provide students with more independence. I'll also add a few comments on the benefits of doing so.
[fervent writing]
Azul: That's it for the survey. What else do I have left to deal with for today…?
Azul: Aah, here's a birthday card. It seems there are some thoughtful people out there.
Azul: I would rather avoid any debts I may incur by receiving gifts, but I do appreciate cards that could help build connections. Let me see, who sent these cards…?
Azul: This one is from a Mostro Lounge business partner, this one is from someone I met at a seminar… Oh, and here's some from clients I've worked with in the past, as well.
Azul: Heh… With every bit of effort, my web of business contacts keeps growing. However, this isn't enough. It isn't nearly enough.
Azul: I've decided. I will absolutely make it my goal to have this school loosen its rigorous rules on leaving campus so that I can make plans on my free days at a spur of the moment.
Azul: Even if I can just make my way to one new social gathering, it will expand my connections even more. If I do that…
Azul: One day, it wouldn't be farfetched to think I'd be swimming in an ocean of birthday cards! Heheh… Hahahah…!
Azul: AAAHAHAHAHAH!!
Tumblr media
[Octavinelle Dorm – Azul's Room]
[bubble, bubble… clink]
[clank]
Azul: Mm…
Azul: What's that sound…? Ah, the newspaper's here…
Tumblr media
[puts on robe with a flourish]
Azul: Delivered, as always, perfectly on time. It's all thanks to this newspaper that I am able to wake up today as my usual time.
Azul: I've changed it up many times, but it seems this is the perfect amount of sleep for me in the end… I feel completely refreshed.
Azul: Now then, let me see what fascinating news I can glean from the newspaper today.
Azul: I think I'll drink something warm as I look through it.
Tumblr media
Azul: Nnnn… I've finished reading all the articles that caught my eye, so I suppose I should start getting ready for the day.
[Azul magicks his hair up]
Azul: I'll adjust the water temperature to be lukewarm… Ah, still too hot. …Good, this is just right.
[splash, splash…!]
Azul: My skincare routine is as usual… Next, it's time for the makeup. Each little detail counts.
Azul: After all, visual appearance makes up 55% of the impression other people get from you.
Azul: People's eyes are drawn especially to the neck up. I need to use my makeup to give a strong aura so as to not be looked down by anyone.
Azul: I'll draw the eyeliner in a sharp line, and the eyeshadow and eyebrows should be drawn so as to give my eyes an almond-looking shape.
Azul: A bit of an intimidating look should suffice. That way, when I take a bit more of a sincere stance, it would be easier for the impression to change in my favor.
Azul: Now, for my lips… I should use this "Ocean-Proof Lip Balm" designed around the Sea Witch that I bought recently.
Azul: While it has a wonderful moisturizing effect, it doesn't rub off easily whatsoever. Since there's no need for me to reapply it every so often, it's perfect for someone with a busy schedule like myself.
Azul: Finally… The most important part is the shading and contour. Based on this application, the face can take on a completely different appearance.
Azul: If it's done too lightly, there won't be any effect; and sometimes it can have the opposite look of what was intended.
Azul: However, if the shading is applied too dark while trying to give the face a more angular look, it could end up looking strange.
Azul: Start the contour from the cheeks and apply a tone that is only a tad darker than my skin color to help create that natural shade...
Azul: Try to make it look as natural as possible, as if nothing had been applied at all… The trials and errors I've suffered getting to this current application method is numerous.
Azul: It's apparent that there's worth even in studying proper cosmetics.
Tumblr media
Azul: …My hair is good to go now, as well. All that's left is to determine the perfume I'll use today…
Azul: Because of the campaign we're having today, I will most likely be on the Lounge floor as well. I should select a more reserved scent, then.
Azul: Right. I think I'll select this cologne with a herbal note that I've taken a liking to recently.
Azul: It's not too sweet, nor is the scent too strong… The herbal aroma also firmly plants the feeling that I truly am on land.
[spray, spray…]
Azul: Good. There is not a single thing out of place. I look perfect, as usual.
Tumblr media
[Main Street]
[Heartslabyul Student chats with Azul]
Azul: Yes, thank you very much. We should talk again should we have the opportunity…
Epel: Ah… There he is. Azul-san, good morning!
Azul: Oh my, Epel-san. Good morning. Is there something you need of me…? Ah, does it have something to do with the Lounge?
Epel: Ah, not really. I mean, I did think I should give you a heads up because there's gonna be a lot more of us than I thought, but actually…
Epel: I realized I wasn't able to wish you a happy birthday yesterday. So, I just wanted to say, Happy Birthday!
Azul: Oh, my… Heh, thank you so kindly. Well then, I shall definitely have a table reservation awaiting you at the Lounge.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
April 29, 2025
Heather Cox Richardson
Apr 30, 2025
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt popularized the idea that the first 100 days of a presidency established an administration’s direction. As soon as he took office on March 4, 1933, he called Congress into special session to meet on March 9 to address the emergency of the Great Depression. Congress responded to the crisis by quickly passing 15 major bills and 77 other measures first to stabilize the economy and then to rebuild it. On July 24, 1933, FDR looked back at “the crowding events of the hundred days which had been devoted to the starting of the wheels of the New Deal.”
In a Fireside Chat broadcast over the radio, FDR explained that his administration had stabilized the nation’s banks and raised taxes to pay for millions in borrowing. That federal money was feeding starving people, as well as employing 300,000 young men to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps planting trees to prevent soil erosion, building levees and dams for flood control, and maintaining forest roads and trails. It was also funding a public works program for highways and inland navigation, as well as state-based municipal improvements. The government had also raised farm income and wages by regulating agriculture and abolishing child labor.
FDR was speaking on July 24 to urge Americans to get behind a program of shorter hours and higher wages to create purchasing power that would restart the economy. “It goes back to the basic idea of society and of the Nation itself that people acting in a group can accomplish things which no individual acting alone could even hope to bring about,” he said. “If I am asked whether the American people will pull themselves out of this depression, I answer, ‘They will if they want to.’”
Today is the 100th day of President Donald Trump’s second term in office. He marked it by delivering what amounted to a rally outside Detroit, Michigan, in which he claimed his had been “the most successful first 100 days of any administration in the history of our country, and that’s according to many, many people…. This is the best, they say, 100-day start of any president in history, and everyone is saying it. We’ve just gotten started. You haven’t even seen anything yet.”
In fact, Trump has signed just five measures into law: the Laken Riley Act, which Congress passed before he took office; a stopgap funding measure; and three resolutions overturning rules set by the Biden administration.
But Trump’s administration does parallel FDR’s in an odd way. Trump set out in his first hundred days to undo the government FDR established in his first hundred days. Trump has turned the nation away from 92 years of a government that sought to serve ordinary Americans by regulating business, providing a basic social safety net, promoting infrastructure, protecting civil rights, and stabilizing global security and trade. Instead, he is trying to recreate the nation of more than 100 years ago, in which the role of government was to protect the wealthy and enable them to make money from the country’s resources and its people.
Trump set out to destroy the modern American state, gutting the civil service and illegally shuttering federal agencies, as well as slashing through government programs. His team has withdrawn the U.S. from its global leadership and rejected democratic allies in favor of autocrats like Russia’s Vladimir Putin. At home he has imitated those autocrats, ignoring the rule of law and rendering migrants to prison in El Salvador without due process, and using the power of the state to threaten those he perceives as his enemies.
As is typical with autocratic governments, corruption appears to be running deep in this White House. The president and his family are openly profiting from his office. And it would be hard to find a better example of a government letting cronies profit off public resources than Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s relinquishing of control over the department to a DOGE operative, or of a government permitting businesses to profit from ordinary Americans than billionaire Elon Musk’s apparent creation of a master database of Americans’ information.
Trump’s dismantling of the modern American state has been a disaster. Trump spoke tonight in Michigan to tout his hope that his new tariffs will center auto manufacturing back in the U.S., but the economic chaos his tariff policies have unleashed has turned what was a booming economy 100 days ago sharply downward. That economic slump, along with Trump’s illegal renditions of men to El Salvador and the gutting of services Americans depend on, has given Trump the lowest job approval rating after 100 days of any president in 80 years.
And that suggests another way to look at the first 100 days of a presidential term. For all that the 100-days trope focuses on presidents, the first 100 days of Trump’s second term have shown Americans, sometimes encouraged by their allies abroad, pushing back against Trump to restore American democracy.
Democratic attorneys general began to plan for a possible Trump second term in February 2024, preparing for cases they might have to file if Trump followed through with his campaign promises or implemented Project 2025. California, with 5,600 staffers in its department of justice, and New York, with 2,400, carried much of the weight. They were able to file their first challenges to Trump’s January 20 executive orders on January 21. Their lawsuits, and those of others, have been so successful that they have sparked both Trump and MAGA Republicans to attack judges and even the judiciary.
Early observers of the movement to stop Trump’s destruction of the modern state argued that the opposition was too burned out to mount any meaningful pushback against a newly emboldened Trump. But, in fact, people were not in the streets because they were organizing over computer apps and at the local level, a reality that burst into the open at Republican town halls in late February as angry voters protested government cuts at the hands of Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.”
On March 4, Representative Richard Hudson (R-NC), the head of the House Republicans’ campaign arm, told Republicans to stop holding town halls to stop the protests from gaining attention. So Democrats began holding their own packed town halls in the absent Republicans’ districts.
On March 20, 2025, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) launched their “Fighting Oligarchy” tour in Las Vegas. Unexpectedly huge crowds flocked to their rallies across the West, revealing a deep well of unhappiness at the current government even in areas that had voted for Trump.
At 7:00 on the evening of March 31, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) launched a marathon speech attacking the Trump administration and imploring Republicans to defend democracy because, he said, he had “been hearing from people from all over my state and indeed all over the nation calling upon folks in Congress to do more, to do things that recognize the urgency—the crisis—of the moment. And so we all have a responsibility, I believe to do something different to cause, as John Lewis said, good trouble, and that includes me.” Before he finished twenty-five hours later on April 1, his speech—the longest in congressional history—had been liked on TikTok 400 million times.
The quiet organizing of the early months of the administration showed when the first call for a public “Hands Off!” protest on April 5 produced more than 1,400 rallies in all 50 states and turned out millions of people. Organizers called for “an end to the billionaire takeover and rampant corruption of the Trump administration; an end to slashing federal funds for Medicaid, Social Security, and other programs working people rely on; and an end to the attacks on immigrants, trans people, and other communities.”
On April 11, Harvard University rejected the administration’s demand to regulate the “intellectual and civil rights conditions” at Harvard, including its governance, admissions, programs, and extracurricular activities, in exchange for the continuation of $2.2 billion in multiyear grants and a $60 million contract.
Harvard’s lawyers wrote: “The university will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights. Neither Harvard nor any other private university can allow itself to be taken over by the federal government. Accordingly, Harvard will not accept the government’s terms as an agreement in principle…. Harvard is not prepared to agree to demands that go beyond the lawful authority of this or any administration.”
Last Sunday, April 27, Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker gave a barn-burning speech to Democrats in New Hampshire, telling them to “fight—EVERYWHERE AND ALL AT ONCE.” “Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption. But I am now,” he said.
“These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace. They have to understand that we will fight their cruelty with every megaphone and microphone that we have. We must castigate them on the soap box, and then punish them at the ballot box. They must feel in their bones that when we survive this shameful episode of American history with our democracy intact— because we have no alternative but to do just that—that we will relegate their portraits to the museum halls reserved for tyrants and traitors.”’
And so, even as Trump tries to erase the government FDR pioneered, Americans are demonstrating their support for a government that defends ordinary people, and proving the truth of FDR’s words from 1933, that when people act together they “can accomplish things which no individual acting alone could even hope to bring about.”

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth. That compares to the ABC’s overall radio listenership of just 5.6 per cent. The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

TRS-80 Microcomputer News April 1981
Along with a feature article on the application of telecommunications to agriculture, this issue had Jon Shirley in "View From the 7th Floor" mention Radio Shack wouldn't service Model III computers with third-party disk drive kits inside them, adding the warning those kits probably wouldn't meet FCC regulations. The Color Computer Product Line Manager included a program showing off the drawing capabilities of Extended Color BASIC; an unextended Color BASIC program ported the "Castle Shot" program that had provided a demo for the first Level I TRS-80.

SEATTLE (AP) — The world's largest hornet, an invasive breed dubbed the “murder hornet” for its dangerous sting and ability to slaughter a honey bee hive in a matter of hours, has been declared eradicated in the U.S., five years after being spotted for the first time in Washington state near the Canadian border.
The Washington and U.S. Departments of Agriculture announced the eradication Wednesday, saying there had been no detections of the northern giant hornet in Washington since 2021.
The news represented an enormous success that included residents agreeing to place traps on their properties and reporting sightings, as well as researchers capturing a live hornet, attaching a tiny radio tracking tag to it with dental floss, and following it through a forest to a nest in an alder tree. Scientists destroyed the nest just as a number of queens were just beginning to emerge, officials said.
“I’ve gotta tell you, as an entomologist — I’ve been doing this for over 25 years now, and it is a rare day when the humans actually get to win one against the insects," Sven Spichiger, pest program manager of the Washington State Department of Agriculture, told a virtual news conference.
The hornets, which can be 2 inches (5 cm) long and were formerly called Asian giant hornets, gained attention in 2013, when they killed 42 people in China and seriously injured 1,675. In the U.S., around 72 people a year die from bee and hornet stings each year, according to data from the National Institutes of Health.
The hornets were first detected in North America in British Columbia, Canada, in August 2019 and confirmed in Washington state in December 2019, when a Whatcom County resident reported a specimen. A beekeeper also reported hives being attacked and turned over specimens in the summer of 2020. The hornets could have traveled to North America in plant pots or shipping containers, experts said.
DNA evidence suggested the populations found in British Columbia and Washington were not related and appeared to originate from different countries. There also have been no confirmed reports in British Columbia since 2021, and the nonprofit Invasive Species Centre in Canada has said the hornet is also considered eradicated there.
Northern giant hornets pose significant threats to pollinators and native insects. They can wipe out a honey bee hive in as little as 90 minutes, decapitating the bees and then defending the hive as their own, taking the brood to feed their own young.
The hornet can sting through most beekeeper suits, deliver nearly seven times the amount of venom as a honey bee, and sting multiple times. At one point the Washington agriculture department ordered special reinforced suits from China.
Washington is the only state that has had confirmed reports of northern giant hornets. Trappers found four nests in 2020 and 2021.
Spichiger said Washington will remain on the lookout, despite reporting the eradication. He noted that entomologists will continue to monitor traps in Kitsap County, where a resident reported an unconfirmed sighting in October but where trapping efforts and public outreach have come up empty.
He noted that other invasive hornets can also pose problems: Officials in Georgia and South Carolina are fighting yellow-legged hornets, and southern giant hornets were recently detected in Spain.
“We will continue to be vigilant,” Spichiger said.

Jester Hairston
Tumblr media
By Life Magazine via Google Images-Photographer Loomis Dean., Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=28896923
Jester Joseph Hairston (July 9, 1901 – January 18, 2000) was an American composer, songwriter, arranger, choral conductor and actor. He was regarded as a leading expert on black spirituals and choral music. His notable compositions include "Amen," a gospel-tinged theme from the film Lilies of the Field and a 1964 hit for the Impressions, and the Christmas song "Mary's Boy Child."
Hairston was born in Belews Creek, a rural community on the border of Stokes, Forsyth, Rockingham and Guilford counties in North Carolina. His grandparents had been slaves. At an early age, he and his family moved to Homestead, Pennsylvania, just outside Pittsburgh, where he graduated from high school in 1921. Hairston was very young when his father was killed in a job-related accident. Hairston was raised by his grandmother while his mother worked. Hairston heard his grandmother and her friends talking and singing about plantation life and became determined to preserve this history through music.
Hairston initially majored in landscape architecture at Massachusetts Agricultural College in the 1920s. He became involved in various church choirs and choral groups, and accompanist Anna Laura Kidder saw his potential and became his benefactor. Kidder offered Hairston financial assistance to study music at Tufts University. from which he graduated in 1929. He was one of the first black students admitted to Tufts. Later he studied music at the Juilliard School.
Hairston pledged the Chi chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity in 1925. He worked as a choir conductor in the early stages of his career. His work with choirs on Broadway eventually led to singing and acting parts in plays, films, radio programs and television shows.
Hairston sang with the Hall Johnson Choir in Harlem for a time but was nearly fired from the all-black choir because he had difficulty with the rural dialects that were used in some of the songs. He had to shed his Boston accent and relearn the country speech of his parents and grandparents. Johnson had told him: "We're singing ain't and cain't and you're singing shahn't and cahn't and they don't mix in a spiritual." The choir performed in many Broadway shows, including The Green Pastures. In 1936, the choir was asked to visit Hollywood to sing for the film The Green Pastures. Russian composer Dimitri Tiomkin heard Hairston and invited him to what would become a 30-year collaboration in which Hairston arranged and collected music for films. In 1939, Hairston married Margaret Swanigan. He wrote and arranged spirituals for Hollywood films as well as for high school and college choirs around the country.
Hairston wrote the song "Mary's Boy Child" in 1956. He also arranged the song "Amen", which he dubbed for the Sidney Poitier film Lilies of the Field, and arranged traditional Negro spirituals.[16] Most of Hairston's film work was in the field of composing, arranging and choral conducting. He also acted in more than 20 films, mostly in small roles, some uncredited. Hairston starred in John Wayne's The Alamo (1960), in which he portrayed "Jethro," a slave owned by Jim Bowie. In 1962’s To Kill a Mockingbird Hairston portrayed the uncredited role of the father of accused rapist Tom Robinson. In 1967’s In the Heat of the Night, Hairston portrayed the butler of a wealthy racist being investigated for murder. In both films, Hairston shot scenes along side men who won an Academy Award for Best Actor in those respective films for portraying white Southerners navigating their jobs through a racially divided culture.
In 1961, the U.S. State Department appointed Hairston as Goodwill Ambassador. He traveled all over the world teaching and performing the folk music of the slaves. In the 1960s, he held choral festivals with public high-school choirs, introducing them to Negro spiritual music, and sometimes led several hundred students in community performances. His banter about the history of the songs along with his engaging personality and sense of humor endeared him to many students.
During his nationwide travels, Hairston checked local phone books for other Hairstons and reunited many people on his family tree, both black and white. He composed more than 300 spirituals. He was the recipient of many honorary doctorates, including a doctorate from the University of Massachusetts in 1972 and a doctorate in music from Tufts in 1977.
In his later years, Hairston served as a cultural ambassador for American music, traveling to numerous countries with choral groups that he had assembled. In 1985, he took the Jester Hairston Chorale, a multiracial group, to sing in China at a time when foreign visitors would rarely appear there.
Hairston died in Los Angeles of natural causes in 2000 at age 98. For his contribution to the television industry, Hairston has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame located at 6201 Hollywood Boulevard. He is interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, California.

#VoxPop The long-running radio interview program Vox Pop highlighted the lives of men and women of all backgrounds. However, Parks Johnson did not limit his interactions to human subjects. Vox Pop also featured live animals during the broadcasts, often as gifts to the participants.
On September 1, 1941, Vox Pop broadcast from the Indiana State Fair and interviewed several 4-H Club members. Here, co-host Wally Butterworth (far right) presents 14-year-old James J. Hallar of Lafayette, Indiana, with a registered guernsey calf, while Parks Johnson interviews Hallar at the microphone.
Hallar had presented a champion steer at the fair and would go on to receive more livestock awards. After World War II, Hallar attended Purdue University and continued his life as a farmer. After his wife Phyllis passed away in 2017, Hallar created the Phyllis Marie Hallar & James J. Hallar Opportunity Scholarship in Agriculture at Purdue.

Hey Azzy! Happy STS! Can you tell us about something you're actively working on right now? Something you've just started or something that's half-finished ... I'm interested in what you're crafting, whether that's getting words on a page or doing illustrations or just brainstorming ideas :)
hi Jas, happy STSMonday! i'm not writing much at the moment, exam season is absolutely devastating, but i have been doing some miscellaneous worldbuilding
a lot of it has been focused on the next Realm introduction post, which is for Ferive (pron: Fae-ree-vay, inspired by the Feywild). Ferive is largely unknown and unexplored, because it's really fucking dangerous. it got insanely destabilized by the First Fallen's falling and the War of Arcana, and its edge is still all torn up. the nature is extremely aware and conscious, there are void beasts and corruption spots hiding in every shadow and sometimes even the fae themselves aren't chill with each other (see: redcaps)
now the fae are not one single species, but most fae species have adapted themselves to survival in these conditions. this is mostly done via camouflage. and who is better at camouflage and hiding than insects, spiders and scorpions? absolutely no one. that's why i largely designed the fae to look like them. the only exceptions are nymphs (who camouflage with the environment itself), elves (who (who mimic larger fauna) and some smaller types of fae such as brownies (who mimic fungi and algae)
while the fae aren't necessarily fond of each other, they do often find themselves collaborating and dividing "duties" to survive and keep at bay the dangers of their Realm. so for example, the bigger and more "secure" settlements are mixed settlements that develop around either a tear or an accumulation spot. someone works an inner defense against the tear / spot (usually fairies or alfey), then a middle ring gets populated and transformed into residential or agricultural land (usually by pixies, nymphs, goblins, gnomes, sprites and such) and groups of sturdier fae (such as elves, ratiffs, arachineas and skeptes) handle the outer defense against the wilderness plus, sometimes, exploration
another thing i've been working on, which i think might interest you a lot more, is Harbinger history. because yes, at the moment the Harbingers are a more-or-less global organization (or at least they're trying to be) but they haven't existed that long. the first recorded collaboration between groups of magic-receptives (aka people who study and interact with the Fabeir and magic) from different areas of the world was in the late 1800s. the immigration and emigration waves did a lot to put different traditions in contact actually
Harbinger history develops a lot alongside telecommunication history, which is to say that the actuall full organization of the Harbingers only really formed in the late '90s and early 2000s. a lot of the base infrastructure was already there, such as the national poles where artifacts, materials (like the modified denim) and copies of research and resources would be physically brought by a courier
so it's safe to say that the advent of modern communication systems simplified things a bunch. today's Harbingers use encripted radio communications on the short distance and encrypted phone calls or internet signals on the long distance. research and resources are collected into a database with a bunch of (small) servers all over the world, which other Harbingers can access on the fly through a dedicated (encrypted) computer program or, much more recently, through a lighter version of it that runs on smartphones and tablets
however, couriers are still very much a thing! Harbingers do not trust the fucking postal service, not national and let alone international. usually it's sentinels that end up running courier jobs, rather than having dedicated couriers, though there are still a bunch of them (very few. as in, two to four per continent). sentinels that run courier jobs however have to meet a number of requirements in terms of rank and language skills, plus have to keep a communication channel open at all times. it was Not Rare™ for couriers to be attacked by exorcist cells
also i have to specify something. not all magic-receptives are Harbingers. Harbinger refers specifically just to the people in the organization. and an additional term is magic-sensitive, which is for people who can see and interact with magic (they are also called rerajaimako in Onan). so for example, Ike's little sisters are magic-sensitive, but they're not magic-receptive and they're not Harbingers. Gaia, Ike's best friend, isn't magic-sensitive (she can't see or do any actual magic) but she is magic-receptive, although not a Harbinger. and then there's one specific cousin of Ike's on his dad's side who isn't magic-sensitive, isn't magic-receptive, but is still a Harbinger in the administration department

Sol Fertilis: Victory Week and Day
Victory Week and Day
Victory Day, also known as officially the Day of Victory in the Ardens Oriens War, meaning “Blazing East”, celebrates the defeat of Nazi-Ostania and Zandia and the end of the Ardens Oriens War on March 27th. This is a major part of Abbadon’s Inferno War. In the week leading up to Victory Day, Sol Fertilis observes Victory Week, a period of remembrance and celebration dedicated to honoring the nation's triumph in the Ardens Oriens War and the defeat of their enemies. It occurred from the 21st to the 26th of March.
The Departments of Art Promotion and National Holidays from the Ministry of Celebrations & Festivals would provide each household with Victory Day decorations, along with small Nazi-Ostanian and Zandia flags that look like they’re on fire, PNP Banners, Victory Wreaths, and memorial candles. Streets, Centers, malls, Children’s Palaces, workplaces, government buildings, and many other places would be decorated with Victory Day decorations, along with anti-Nazi Ostanian, anti-Zandian, and pro-Sol Fertilian propaganda.
On the first day of Victory Week, town squares across Sol Fertilis present documentaries that vividly depict the atrocities committed by Nazi-Ostania and Zandia during the Ardens Oriens War. The documentaries did not spare any graphic details of war crimes and crimes against humanity. There are images of Nazi-Ostanian soldiers killing Sol Fertilian citizens, bombing major cities during air raids, enslavement of citizens, mass murders of the Jews, Roma, Arab, and African Sol Fertilians, Zandian soldiers destroying religious monuments, etc. The purpose of this is to increase rage against Nazi-Ostania, which was already defeated, and Zandia, which has a conditional surrender and is suspected to house escaped Nazi criminals.
On the second day, citizens are presented with historical footage and audio from their teleautomata, which is a television with automatic activation capabilities, and an automataradio, which is a radio device equipped with automatic activation features. The historical footage consists of Sol Fertilian military leaders, soldiers, supporters, and citizens preparing for war to protect its sovereignty. The purpose of this is to remind the nation’s resilience and defense.
On the third and fourth days, this is where the Sol Fertilian children would prepare items for the Victory Day Parade. All of the Iuventutis Foederatios, meaning youth leagues, would prepare their decorations. Examples include the Ceres Gaia Junior Harvesters, a Beta Neutral Iuventutis Foederatios focus on agriculture, which would build a cornucopia of ration food that soldiers and citizens eat. Another is the Bona Flora's Bloomers, an Omega Iuventutis Foederatio focusing on floriculture, which would make garlands and bouquets that represent the Supervictus, a term for the survivors of the Nazi-Ostanian and Zandian atrocities. Another example is the Keres Scouts, an all-female Alpha Iuventutis Foederatio, who would build paper-mache figures of Sol Fertilis’ enemies so they would be burned down at the end of the week.
On the fifth day, there are films about major heroes from the Ardens Oriens War. Starting from the Sol Resistance Army to the “Witch of Berlint” Sigal Fleischer, to the Juvenile Soldiers who fought the Hässlich Youth, to the Berlint Theatre Massacre along with the eventual Beheading of Hässlich. These are the most iconic films and would be shown on primetime, depending on which channel. Also, the AlphaVigil, which is a short program for young Alpha children in the Centers and Children’s Palaces to instill a sense of rage towards Sol Fertilis’ enemies, would show recreations of war heroes’ fights to celebrate the triumph over enemies.
On the sixth day, there would be televised public executions of those who are convicted of High Treason, officially known as Altum Proditio. This type of High Treason mainly connects to Nazi-Ostania and Zandia as these traitors are convicted of being collaborators, terrorists, spies, assassins, seditious criminals, and secessionists. Once they are convicted, they are held in prison until it is the day before Victory Day. They are taken to the April 3rd Square where they are executed by either firing squad, hanging, burning at the stake, and, for the most severe offense, damnatio ad bestias via wolves. In Olympia, most of its citizens would be in person to watch and praise the executions as high-ranking government officials, such as Senators, Justices, and Patriarchs/Matriarchs, would watch them from the balconies. Citizens living outside Olympia are mandated to watch it on the screens in public squares, taverns, workplaces, Centers, post-Center institutions, malls, etc. Omegas, pregnant women, the elderly, and young children are the only ones to be excluded from watching the brutal executions.
On Victory Day itself, there is a massive festival around the nation with a military parade in Olympia. There were presentations on military strength and citizen resilience. There are floats from the Iuventutis Foederatios to show that the nation survived to be fertile. Citizens would eat “Victory Snacks” as they watch the parade. Sol Fertilian leaders and war heroes would watch from balconies and praise the military and Iuventutis Foederatios. Citizens would visit Ardens Oriens war memorials and museums to commemorate the soldiers, heroes, and Supervictus, which is a term for survivors of the Nazi-Ostania invasion of Northeast Sol Ferilis and the enslavement. There is a televised orchestra concert at the Minvera Theater with songs based on battles that Sol Fertilis won. At primetime, citizens would watch a documentary film that shows the entirety of Sol Fertilis’ involvement in the Ardens Oriens War, starting from Nazi Ostantia’s invasion of the north to the death of Hasslich, marking the end.

Livestock and Pet Management Through Advanced RFID Microchips For Animal Identification
Tumblr media
Modern animal management faces unprecedented challenges in tracking, identifying, and monitoring livestock and pets across various environments. Whether you're a livestock farmer managing hundreds of cattle or a pet owner ensuring your companion's safety, the solution lies in cutting-edge RFID technology. RFID Microchips For Animal tracking have emerged as the definitive answer to these challenges, transforming traditional animal management practices into sophisticated, data-driven systems.
RFID Technology in Animal Applications
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) represents a breakthrough in animal identification systems. These sophisticated microchips utilize radio wave technology to store and transmit unique identification codes that can be instantly accessed through specialized scanning equipment. Unlike traditional identification methods, RFID Chip Animals systems provide permanent, tamper-proof identification that remains functional throughout an animal's entire lifetime.
The microchips themselves are remarkably small—typically the size of a grain of rice—and can be safely implanted subcutaneously or integrated into ear tags. Each chip contains a unique alphanumeric code that links directly to comprehensive databases containing vital animal information, from birth records to medical histories.
Mechanics of Modern Animal RFID Systems
Contemporary RFID animal tracking operates through interconnected components that create seamless data management ecosystems. When an RFID reader scans an animal's microchip, it instantly accesses stored information including breeding records, vaccination schedules, health monitoring data, and ownership details.
For livestock operations, this technology enables comprehensive lifecycle tracking from birth to market. Farmers can monitor breeding programs, track vaccination compliance, manage quarantine protocols, and maintain detailed health records. Pet applications focus on owner identification, medical histories, and rapid recovery services for lost animals.
The system's database integration allows real-time updates and remote access, enabling veterinarians, farmers, and pet owners to access critical information instantly, regardless of location.
Transformative Benefits of RFID Animal Identification
Enhanced Identification Capabilities: Modern RFID readers support multiple tag formats and coding systems, providing flexibility for diverse operational needs. This adaptability proves invaluable for large-scale operations managing various animal species or breeds.
Integrated Network Solutions: Each animal receives a unique digital identity that connects to internet-based platforms and e-commerce systems. This connectivity enables real-time monitoring, data sharing, and remote management capabilities that traditional identification methods cannot match.
Industry Standardization: Unified technical specifications ensure compatibility across different systems, regions, and industries. This standardization facilitates easier adoption, reduces implementation costs, and enables seamless data sharing between stakeholders.
Cross-Industry Integration: RFID technology integrates with other technological sectors, creating opportunities for expanded applications in agriculture, veterinary medicine, and animal welfare organizations.
Improved Traceability: Complete animal lifecycle documentation enhances food safety protocols, supports regulatory compliance, and provides consumers with transparency regarding animal welfare and product origins.
Applications Across Animal Management Sectors
Livestock Management: Commercial farmers utilize RFID Microchips For Animal tracking to optimize breeding programs, monitor health status, track feed consumption, and ensure regulatory compliance. The technology streamlines operations while providing detailed analytics for improved decision-making.
Pet Safety: Companion animal applications focus on permanent identification that cannot be lost or removed. This technology significantly increases recovery rates for lost pets and provides emergency access to critical medical information.
