Frisk vs Chara vs The Player
Okay so bear with me- I'm really not that much into Undertale anymore, but my brain just had a realization (which is also rather speculative)... Approximately 7 years after the game's release.
So in DELTARUNE, The Player (you) and Kris (the protagonist) are two separate entities, seemingly battling for control over the latter's life. And the same phenomenon is occurring in UNDERTALE. But what may be even more interesting, is how in DELTARUNE characters are slowly coming to recognize that something is wrong with Kris and (to some extent) the involvement of an unknown entity - while in UNDERTALE, the characters are unable to perceive The Player's presence and will come to false conclusions, in turn confusing The Player as to who is in control.
Tumblr media
The reason why The Player's possession of Kris is much more noticeable than with Frisk (for both the characters and the players themselves) is because of three main reasons: 1. The "connection" with Kris' SOUL during the character creation screen and "disconnect" during the epilogue/nighttime scenes, clarifying the existence of a puppeteer 2. Kris' shared backstory with other characters, making them suspicious of Kris' change in demeanor and fleshing out Kris as an individual person, separate from the puppeteer 3. The lack of alternatives to The Player as Kris' puppeteer, leaving us with mostly just one reasonable conclusion.
And I find the last reason particularly interesting. While in Undertale, the fandom is very much aware that Frisk is getting possessed in some shape or form, due to in-game accusations, players would rather consider Chara the puppeteer, rather than themselves (The Player).
Tumblr media
Flowey is the most obviously confused and accuses Chara of being the controlling puppeteer, the owner of the SAVE file. This is because 1. The SAVE file is named after Chara. Frisk could not have possibly known Chara's name and even if they did, why would Frisk have named the file after somebody else? 2. Flowey has had a SAVE file before. He could create it himself and did not require the input of another entity. He has no reason to consider the possibility of a third entity besides Frisk and Chara managing the SAVE file. So the only reasonable conclusion Flowey can make is that if there is a puppeteer, it is definitely Chara. When asking The Player not to RESET for Frisk's sake after a pacifist run, he believes he is talking to Chara. Which, in turn, causes The Player to believe that they are Chara.
Tumblr media
This notion is both supported and contradicted by the genocide ending. In support stands Chara's line "Since when were you the one in control?", which outright states that The Player never had any control over the story, to begin with. But on the contrary, Chara will still condemn The Player's actions. Furthermore, it was The Player's actions, The Player's control that triggered the genocide ending in the first place. To make sense of Chara's evaluation of the situation, one might argue that Chara is aware of the existence of a third entity. They are condemning The Player's actions. But when The Player makes a choice that does not fall in line with their character (not erasing the world), Chara assumes that it must be Frisk who rejected Chara's suggestion. Why or who else could it be, after all? And Chara would be right to ask "Since when were you (Frisk) the one in control?" even though they were wrong to assume that they were talking to Frisk just now.
Tumblr media
But this does not necessarily align with the post-genocide pacifist run. Because it is not The Player who gets to pay but Frisk. The Player could care less about their punishment in the post-credit scene because it will never affect the actual gameplay. Perhaps completing the pacifist run gave Chara the impression that the player does care about Frisk and the other characters, punishing them in The Player's stead. Or maybe Chara does not realize that The Player's control over Frisk has faded away after leaving the Underground. Which makes Chara appear even more confused as to who is in control. Further evidence that Chara is frequently confusing Frisk and The Player is found in their narrations. Both Frisk and The Player are addressed as "You" by Chara. When Frisk deems the toys at Toriel's home uninteresting, it is "You" but it is also "You" when Chara is commenting on actions that were completely outside of Frisk's control ("You are superfast at being wrong").
Tumblr media
A further possibility I would like to entertain is that Chara is unaware of The Player's influence. Which makes sense, considering they have only ever seen Frisk interacting with the Underground - not some unknown third entity. From Chara's perspective, Frisk may seem to be in control, but at the end of the day, the SAVE file still bears Chara's name. By that logic, Chara must be the one who is ultimately in control, the god or demon of this world, possibly chosen by fate itself. And they do not even consider the possibility that somebody else created the SAVE file for them, or that the SAVE file belongs to somebody else entirely, who just so happens to share Chara's name, or that somebody not only named the SAVE file but also Chara themselves. And honestly, why should they? The only other two people they know of, who could possibly, ever have the power to manipulate a SAVE file in that manner, are Frisk and Flowey. Frisk, who could not possibly know Chara's name, and Flowey, who would rather claim the SAVE file for himself.
[That's it. This was my essay.]

Alrighty, now here’s a question that has been stirring in my mind for a while now...
Do Darkners have SOULs?
A while ago I might’ve been like “Well, yeah, obviously. As we’ve seen with the story of Flowey in Undertale, SOULs are the source of love, compassion and kindness in the Toby Fox Video Game Multiverse. Darkners are obviously capable of feeling these emotions, so they have some sort of SOUL.”
(Also just for the sake of clarity, I know the worlds of Deltarune and Undertale are not the same. However, since there does seem to be some connection, I’m making this post under the assumption that the two worlds do at least share the same basic underlying laws of phsyics and metaphysics.)
Anyways, yeah, if we were to go by the rules established by the story of Asriel “Flowey” Dreemurr back in Undertale, obviously the Darkners should all have SOULs, right?
But... maybe not? I’ve gone over it in a different post, but despite what Flowey says, there does seem to be instances of him displaying kindness and compassion even in his SOUL-less state (pleading with the Player/Chara to not ruin Frisk’s happy ending, the whole story about giving Toriel a glass of water in the Alarm Clock Thingie). Plus with both games reiterating that everything we know about SOULs is in-universe speculation:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think it’s not impossible that Flowey was misidentifying his problem (which is mostly that he was a traumatized emotionally-numb child stuck with god-like timebending powers and the belief he’s incapable of feeling love) and that SOULs actually have a totally different function.
Now, we hop into Deltarune and think about the encounter with Spamton:
Tumblr media
Spamton seems to be interested in their SOUL pretty much as soon as he saw that they are a Lightner (although he might have become more interested when he saw it’s a Human SOUL spesifically?). The wording seems to connect the ‘Light’ of the Lightners with their [[HeartShapedObject]], AKA their SOULs. And we know that Spamton believes that Kris’ SOUL is what would allow him to become [[BIG]] or in other words, ‘free’.
And ‘Light’ is equated with ‘Hope’ in Deltarune, which can be just another word for...
Tumblr media
And Queen defines it as a trait of Lightners. Humans might be more Determined than Monsters, but it seems like both of them have much more Determination than any Darkner. And that, of course, connect to the idea that Lightners seem to have a lot more Free Will right now. Of course, no one can truly choose who they are in this world, but Lightners seem to have a bit more agency in general - while Darkners are tied in with their ‘purpose’ of making Lightners happy, and the way they represent concepts and physical objects in the real world.
(As in, how much of Queen’s personality is a result of her own life choices and how much is because she’s obviously a stand-in for Noelle’s mother? Did Spamton ever had a chance to truly improve his salesmanship, considering he is a representation of Spam E-Mail?)
In Undertale, Alphys calls “Determination” two things, it’s the “the will to keep living”, which obviously connects to how Determination powers SAVEs. And also “the resolve to change fate”, which connect with the power of RESETs, but also I think with the ability to change who and what you are. This is what Spamton wanted when he wanted after Kris’ SOUL, right? To change his fate from being forever doomed to trash beings and spam folders and become a true [[Big Shot]]? He wanted Determination, from a Lightner’s SOUL.
And there’s two things Deltarune keeps repeating when it comes to SOULs, the first is the connection to Compassion which has been carried over from Undertale, and the second is a big empahsis on the subject of ‘Will’ (which again, Queen literally says is just another name for Determination):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, while the book is worded in a not-definitive way (”even now, the true function of it is unknown”), I do think it’s curious to pay attention to the difference between “font” and “source”. Both words can mean ‘where something came from’, but “font” can also be a container rather than an origin point:
Tumblr media
So maybe we can take this to mean that the SOUL does contain kindess and love but you can still have kindness and love without a SOUL just in a Different Way? But that it IS where Will/Determination comes from? Your free will/Determination is the thing you would normally lack without a SOUL? But it’s just that we couldn’t notice it before cause our only example of a SOUL-less being in the Toby Fox Video Game Multiverse has become an artifical source of Determination all on his own so he’s obviously an exception?
Is the SOUL just the thing that gives Lightners more Narrative Agency than Darkners?
This would obviously put Kris in a very precarious position. The part of their mind that’s supposed to allow them some amount of Free Will is being controlled right now and robbing them of that Free Will. But they can’t just rip it out and live without it because it doesn’t just contain their Life-Force, but also their personal will and agency. They can only truly have Free Will for short period of times while SOUL-less but still retaining some Determination in their body, and it’s otherwise a real no-win scenario.
That also kinda puts Flowey’s whole being in a new light, or should I say Light. Cause Flowey really is, more than most “Lightners” in the Toby Fox Video Game Multiverse, really a Light-Equivelent to Darkners. He’s an object given consciousness and life by consentrated Light rather than by the Dark.
(of course, this is all just very vauge speculation right now, all of my evidence is very circumstantial. All I can really say for sure is that I would want to REALLY pay attention about what is said about SOULs in the upcoming chapters of Deltarune, and espacially in relation to Darkners. Cause right now we can’t be sure if they even have those at all)

Deltarune: The importance of Love
Alright, so I have been thinking about Deltarune for quite a while now. It got me to start thinking about Ralsei’s strange behavior during Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, because something isn’t right about him. Especially when he said about him not knowing what being Ralsei-like is during the swan ride.
Then it immediately hit me as to what he just said, because we don’t know what it is like to be Kris. We are pretending to be someone else just as much as he is pretending to not be his true self. Ralsei is trying to trick us into doing the pacifist run by manipulating our love for the nostalgia of the Undertale world against us! If we do a pacifist run, we might end up destroying the world instead of saving it, because we weren’t aware of what Ralsei is doing to us.
You may be wondering why I am mentioning this to begin with. Well, after we defeated King in Chapter 1. Ralsei was foolish enough to heal them, and this almost got Susie and Kris killed because of his nativity. This behavior of his only gets worse during Chapter 2 when we saw how he treated Kris and Berdly. Ralsei wanted us to ignore Kris’s well-being after we defeated Spamton, and then he didn’t bother to heal Berdly when there was a possibility of him being seriously injured. ( His arm will be injured if the player doesn't save him from the wires. ) This FUCKING goat didn’t care about their well-being at all, and you expect me to love him when he treated Berdly and Kris like that! HELL NO! What he did was the cruelest thing I have ever seen in my life.
And he is supposed to be the one who represents the “kindness” soul. Don’t make me laugh, because Ralsei didn't know what true kindness looks like until he saw Susie showing her kindness towards Kris by saving them from King.
It is also extremely suspicious as to why the weird route wasn’t a choice for us until Noelle appeared, because Ralsei keeps trying to push us towards the pacifist route. He doesn’t use his fire magic in a battle despite him knowing how to use it. DO NOT TRUST RALSEI! I REPEAT DO NOT TRUST HIM!
If you want to save Kris and the others from their horrible fate. You need to make the ultimate sacrifice, because everything is in reverse now. You need to show them what true love is by risking it all. This means that you have to make them hate you in order to save everybody from the Angel’s Heaven. The player is definitely the true villain of this story, since you are being forced to control Kris’s body against their will. You are trying to pretend to be Kris. You took everybody they care about away from them. You took their save point, and their castle town just by existing in their world. You took everything away from them, and you expect them to be your friend. No! Absolutely not! This is not your story, because this adventure is meant to be for Kris. They need to learn how to be independent from you, as they aren’t a little kid like Frisk.
Deltarune is going to be a story about taking risks, since all of the kids in hometown including the vessel are teenagers. Teenagers usually try to do risky things, because they want to be independent from their parents. It’s time for us players to do something extremely risky, since we shouldn’t listen to Ralsei nor their so-called “legend”. That goat is hiding important information from us, and it can't be ignored.

A reward better than power
"So I just stopped at the ask-flowey dimension player."
"Why are you bleeding."
"To quote Susie, 'everyone bleeds right?'"
"You just disturbed him didn't you."
"Shut up f**ker."
"You know the more you say that the less it means anything. In fact I kind of take it as a compliment now."
God damn it they've figured it out. Anyway why am I still bleeding, was the box made out of concrete or was Flowey just The Rock.
"So where are we going to first Kris."
"Kara!!!"
"Kara."
"Well we're going to see if there are any other universes to save, huh what would be a good one?"
"Kara I think we should see a new idea, I mean did you just think you could walk into a player say sarcastic things to them and the world would be saved?"
"Umm could you teach me?"
"Ugh, first off you need to make yourself seem secretive. Like your meant to be in there. Since your 'Kris' ,I know your name is Kara, but you should look fine."
"What was your life before you came here, I mean it must've suck for you to stay here forever."
"I really am just doing this because I can't allow living intelligent creatures to be killed. Also to be honest, I want my reward."
"For what?"
"Most people go through a pacifist route at some point. They don't get rewarded for all there hard work. I didn't want Frisk to have the perfect ending. There just some weird random kid. Actually besides from there name I know nothing about them."
"You do this to feel validated I can understand that, I used to want to before I kind of destroyed that. You went through a lot to get that true. You remind me of my friend, you both want something okay but then it spirals into something terrible."
"I just want to be recognized. I've made thousands maybe millions of copies and I feel like I'm not even close to done."
"That's why I think, one grain of sand picked up will take to long. We need to cover the entire beach with ocean."
"And how do you plan to do that?"
"Snowdrake."

Toby Fox managed to make me feel more guilty with Deltarune than with Undertale
Because sure in Undertale you feel guilty for Sans whenever you reset, for not being able to save Asriel and for everyone if you do the Genocide Run. But I never resetted (IT'S STUPID I KNOW BUUUT...) nor did the Genocide Run, and as sad as it is for Asriel it is in-scenario, it's nothing you could or could not do, plus there is a tad bit of hope about him
In Deltarune however ? Unlike in Undertale where you ARE Frisk and whenever you do something good the scenario has it be Frisk's decision unlike Chara's bad decisions (the mirror scene near the end, Pacifist Route "Despite everything it's still you", Genocide run "It's me", "me" being Chara who was the "narrator" all along and successfully possessed you if you killed everyone), in Deltarune you POSSESS Kris. Whether you do the Pacifist Route, Neutral Route or Snowgrave Route, you still possess that kid. Whatever they do, it is almost never their decision but yours. And they suffer from it, it is a major plot point of the chapters so far. It is implied they don't act like people knew them to, which is normal since you are puppetering them. Frisk is meant to be an insert, Kris is a normal character FORCED to be an insert
YOU have them walk. YOU have them talk. YOU have them Act. YOU have them Fight. YOU have them manipulate Noelle (and if so she will be frightened that their voice is no longer the same). YOU have them establish relationships. YOU have them collect items, sell, buy etc.
They don't necessarily want that big adventure. They may not even like Ralsei, Noelle or Lancer but you have them be friends anyway, you have not eaten the big pie bevause YOU find it too big. You choose their life as if their pre-possession life (since it is implied it is all because he did occult with Catti) was not bad enough for them, with "adoptive child who is too different" syndrome parents divorcing and golden child brother away they both miss and are jealous of. And now that's the cherry on top of their problem. They "accept" it because they know thay without you, they would DIE since after all a video game character has purpose only if played. They don't want to be a video game character but they also know that now that they are on they also need you to survive even if they hate you for having them do things they do not want because you want to. Whenever they rip off their soul to gain a big of freedom, like eating that pie they wanted YOU did not want, you see they suffer, shuffling painfully and breathing hoarsely, looking zombie-like. And the end of the Spamton NEO fight is a good parralel since when finally he is free from his strings it is just what "kills" him, making him inanimate since a doll can't move without strings. And Kris knows that since whatever you have them reply to Susie's and Ralsei's questions right after they are worried and note that Kris is yelling in fear. Kris knows that if they want to be free from you they will also doe and can't be free too long
I even was tempted during my gameplay to ship them with Ralsei, I found it absolutely adorable how Ralsei seemed to crush on them so the big shipper I am had Kris reply his questions with shippy stuff like "I feel the same", "hug him" and "Ralsei" when Susie asks you who you would want a ferri wheel tour with, like any of you would do during classical RPGs where you decide the outcome. Except even THERE the game had me guilty since apparently, Kris does NOT want that since when you reply Ralsei or Noelle they hesitate as if they didn't want to say it but you forced them to, wheras if you select Susie they reply with assurance (Susie is a harem anime protagonist lmao). So even for that cute, innocent moment you are actually forcing them into a relationship they don't want vut they are forced to obey you and that's awfullt guilt-tripping when you realize afterward
The only way for them to be free is when they rip off their soul which is painful or when you coincidently have them do something they do (they are so happy to find the moss because they weirdly love moss as much as pie), or when Susie, who is the only character bossing them around whether you agree or not instead of asking them things you reply to instead (probably why they really like her) have you do something (when you both eat the moss together). They also have a tad say in your decision after all since the motto of Deltarune is the contrary of Undertale : "Your choices don't matter". Even if you have Kris try the Massacre Route and "kill" Darkners, unlike Undertale they DON'T die because Kris doesn't want to and resists the best they can. However in the 2nd chapter, when you realize that Noelle's choices do matter and have her manipulated until she becomes a killing machine instead of Kris, it is visibly you talking through Kris' mouth with your own voice whispering her to proceed. According to her Kris' real voice at this moment will utter "help". You found a way to have them even more miserable because you WANT your gameplay the way you want, all because to Kris' POV you got petty "ah so you resist me ? My choices don't matter ? Alright then what about her ?~" and they can't do anything and now Noelle fears you and Berdly is dead and they all think it's because of Kris
With Deltarune, Toby Fox has you torment a middle schooler and guilt trips you whatever you do because whatever you do you are using them like an unwilling puppet, and the only way for you to leave them alone would be not playing the game, yet of course we do because this is what games are for so because "games are for that" they will forever be tormented
And that's sicko genius

INFODUMP ABOUT UNDERTALE TO ME RIGHT NOW :O /POS
(about Anything At All idc if its rambly bullet points or anything pls im begging u this is lichrally my special interest cmon pleaseee /lh)
OKOK I WILL!!! /pos
cant put this under the cut on mobile so here’s your warning that this will b a very long post!!
random chara hearcanons + ramblings bc CHARA MY BELOVED!!!
i might be projecting but i hc that chara has depression and ptsd! we know they hated people bc of what asriel says during the epilogue, “I know why Chara climbed the mountain. It wasn't for a very happy reason. Frisk. I'll be honest with you. Chara hated humanity.” and i think they hate humanity so much bc of some trauma other people caused. chara is angry and upset, and probably starts to hate humanity more once they learn about all of the pain humans have caused monsters. they aren’t evil or mean, they’re traumatized and hate people because they’ve been hurt so many times
i like to think that chara is so close with asriel in part bc he was one of the first people they felt like they could fully trust. asriel was with them through everything, saved them, gave them a home, etc. i think chara loved him so much in part bc asriel was there for them when everyone else had hurt them
i think chara erases the world at the end of the genocide run because of frisk’s actions in that run and not bc they themselves are cruel. chara is smart, they know that a frisk who would kill all monsters would likely be interested in destroying things alongside chara. the way i see it, chara is angry. they had to watch frisk kill their friends and family, the monsters who took them in and protected them after they had been hurt so bad by humans. chara watched them hurt asriel after he cried and begged for them not to hurt him. they watched frisk reset over and over at every save point, trying to hard to kill everyone and everything and not stopping even when they themselves are struck down. and they don’t have a body anymore so they couldn’t do anything to stop it. genocide run frisk shows what chara hates in humanity: mercilessness and cruelity for the sake of cruelity. they want to get revenge on frisk and stop them from hurting alphys and the monsters who hid and escaped. they want to stop frisk from hurting people beyond the barrier. chara constantly says “just finish the job” throughout the run because they’re exhausted and can’t stand watching frisk hurt these monsters anymore, they just want everything to end. the reason they only come out at the end is fear, in part, and the fact that watching asriel be killed despite his cries and begs was the last thing they could take. when they say “it’s me, chara!” in the mirror in toriel’s home rather than “it’s you” i like to think it’s for a similar reason that sans says “pretend to be a human” to frisk, and for the same reason that some theorize he would make fake blood at the end of the battle with him. chara wants frisk to see another person, hoping maybe they’ll find some goodness and humanity. just like some theorize that sans would use ketchup as fake blood to make frisk see that they’re hurting people like themselves as well, chara wants frisk to see that frisk is human to remind them of any good humanity they might have. they aren’t evil and they aren’t seeing themselves in frisk’s actions, they’re trying to stop frisk from hurting everyone and trying to get revenge on frisk for the pain they’ve caused. the reason why you get a photo with chara and everyone’s faces crossed out or a chara nightmare when you finish a pacifist run after a genocide run is chara reminding frisk of the pain they caused and showing them that the atrocities they committed aren’t something they can just erase and move on from. chara just wants monsters to be happy and to be ok and they hate that once again a human has taken that happiness away from monsters, but they know a reset won’t stop frisk because they will just start over, so if they erase the world and take frisk’s soul for frisk to get it back they can hope that without that soul and determination frisk can’t reset anymore and thus no more genocide run, even though that ultimately isn’t the case. chara just wants to help monsters and they’re angry at her another human for hurting them
asriel says in the epilogue that chara wanted to hurt the humans in the village when they attacked asriel and them, but once again it’s not bc chara is evil or violent, it’s bc they were traumatized by humans and and this is like a fight response to those triggers, and also bc they wanted to protect asriel!!!
chara’s plan to collect 7 human souls as talked about in the tape was for the good of monsters, not so they could hurt humans. they wanted monsters to go free and to live a normal life with their monster family. when they say “our plan had failed, hadn’t it?” in the genocide run they’re referring to their goal of freeing and saving monsters, not like, killing the people that asriel wouldn’t fight. chara wanted to save monsters and to break the barrier, they didn’t want their soul to fuse with asriel because they knew that meant their soul couldn’t be one of the 7 to free monsters. when frisk killed the monsters in the genocide route it meant that monsters weren’t free or safe, their plan with asriel to free monsters from the underground and save them from the prison humans put them in had failed because once again a human had taken everything from them
on a lighter note, pacifist run chara narrates and translates for frisk! chara and frisk likely come from the same village seeing as they’re both able to just go up the mountain and see what’s there, so they probably know the same form of sign language. frisk is mute and signs things to chara, who translates over the phone for them. they also describe everything around frisk since they’ve lived there before and know what everything is while frisk doesn’t know. when they don’t know what to say, they describe stuff! they probably aren’t sure what to make of the mettaton fight since they’ve never seen mettaton ex before, so they say “smells like mettaton”. they don’t know about the amalgamates so they say “smells like sweet lemons” during your fight with lemon bread
the mummy wrappings in the red soul coffin were for chara. asriel removed them from their coffin and carried them off to the village before those supplies could’ve been used. when he brought chara back in after they were attacked, toriel took them out to the flower bed in the ruins where they initially landed to give them a propel burial, and then chose to live in the ruins specifically to take care of chara. chara is buried under the flowers right at the start of the ruins which is why asriel refuses to leave in the epilogue and says “someone has to take care of these flowers.” it’s also in part why toriel is so sad and lonely, being in the ruins and visiting her child daily makes her remember the pain she felt losing chara and asriel and it makes her extra worried about losing frisk and the other humans. through visiting chara like this, both asriel and toriel can see them and talk to them even though they’re mostly gone
asriel and chara were the ones who left those echo flower messages about wishes. chara was the one who laughed and said “it’s just funny, that’s my wish too”
just like kris, chara also had little red horns. chara didn’t like that they were human since they hated humans, but loved monsters and wished they were one. asriel made them little paper horns to be more monster-like, and eventually toriel sewed them an pair and put it on a headband so they could stay on their head
not really a headcanon or theory, just a note. there’s lots of similarities between kris and chara: red eyes, knives, portrayed as “strange”, likes to scare other people (kris hiding under noelle’s bed and putting ketchup on their arms to scare her, and chara doing their creepy face to asriel in the tape—they likely did it before cause asriel had to have known what it was so there’s nothing saying they only do it when asked by asriel), a bit secluded and like to be alone (toriel is no longer upset with kris when she finds out they didn’t answer her calls bc they were with a friend, chara is only ever shown or talked about in relation to asriel or their parents), both kind of get rid of their soul in some way (kris removes their soul and chara like died to give their soul to the monsters), both have similar outfits (although kris looks more like frisk in their face and hair), very close to their asriel, both like monsters, both have mostly obscured eyes until the ending of the game, etc.
chara can only verbally talk to frisk, but they can talk through the phone, similar to how asriel spoke to frisk on the phone at the end of the true lab even though he didn’t have his soul back then and was still a flower, and similar to how you can understand the memory head amalgamate when you use your phone. frisk is one of the few people who can hear their voice irl
chara can verbally talk with mettaton, mew mew, and nabstablook since they were all once ghosts/are ghosts. mettaton sometimes helps chara to speak and to appear to crowds bc they can use his microphones to speak since that’s technology and chara can use his advice to show their own incorporeal form more clearly. chara and nabstablook get along very well as shy ghosts who are best friends with their family
chara and frisk become best friends in pacifist runs :3 frisk returns the the underground sometimes to talk to asriel and lets chara speak to him while they visit through their phone, and eventually chara convinces asriel to come back with them and to live with them again (yes i know this isn’t possible in canon shhhhhhh)
chara is autistic and has adhd. they also have chronic pain and use a cane as a result of their chronic pain and bc of a long lasting injury they sustained from falling into the underground, or they float as a ghost

Deltarune Chapter 2 Had Out Awesome Undertale
on September 21, 2021 I beat Chapter 2 of Deltarune.
(also possible spoilers in this, so please only read this if you have beaten Chapter 2 of Deltarune.)
it took me maybe a few days, but I finally got around to beating it. I hope no one take this the wrong way, but I think that Deltarune Chapter 2 has out-awesomed Undertale,
I still love Undertale but Deltarune's Chapter 2 is very....epic. (well I think is, and it's okay that not everyone agrees that it is more epic than Undertale.)
sure I had a little trouble here and there, but it turned out to be really fun and I do plan to play Chapter 2 again.
but starting with Chapter 1 first then working up to Chapter 2.
I'm glad I was able to play it, it seems you have to beat Deltarune-Chapter 1 first before you can play the Deltarune Chapter 1&2.
yes at first because I wasn't able to play the Chapter 2 at first, I decided to watch a walkthrough of it.....which I was only able to watch the next day.
but playing it myself was more fun and it really was awesome, it might take a few years (maybe either two or three.) until Chapter 3 comes out,
but it will be worth the wait.
don't know who Mike is though, unless it's Mike from FNAF lol......
can't be the Mike in the Undertale's Credits....must be a different Mike.
maybe we will learn more about Mike from Deltarune in the future.
also I can't help but think that Kris might be the Knight, and they have this dark side to them and the one that Susie is truly making friends with
is the Player, who is the new "Kris" and keeping the Old-Kris's dark side in check so they don't do anything too dangerous....maybe?
I believe I know why I am not able to play Undertale Fan Game, Kissy Cutie.
it might have to do with it being how I couldn't play Deltarune Chapter 1&2, until I beat Deltarune Chapter 1 in the original.
it was a new save in the original, so it was good that beat that and then tried to open up the Deltarune Chapter 1&2 again.
and to my surprise the game started to play without that blue pop-up message.
I'm not sure if it is right, that the Kissy Cutie game will start to play normal after you beat the Undertale and get the happy ending.
but I guess I could try to see if that works.
I need to say this about Noelle from Deltarune..........
the whole Yandere-Noelle might be canon.....
just like how the Pie that Kris eats is canon, so must be the Yandere-Noelle.
also I think Catti either loves Noelle as just a friend or she might have a crush on her and sees Susie as a rival.
my headcanon is that Catti has a crush on Noelle and she sees Susie as her rival.
I don't know how many players have scooted Lancer to the table after he got turned to stone....
I do not know if Lancer ate the spaghetti or not, but I know when I did go back to that room (before facing Queen)......
the spaghetti was gone, and the stone Lancer was still at the table too.
there is a reason why I think Yandere-Noelle is canon......but maybe not as deadly.....unless we end up going down a Geno-Route.
I really hope to go down the Weird Route, Weird Route For Life.
Weirdness Is Magic!
I plan to play the Deltarune Chapter 1 & 2 version from the very beginning,
and work my way back to Chapter 2.
also while playing Undertale, I got this theory that pop into my head
that the two figures that Frisk and Alphys see when they are about ready to go face Mettaton.
my theory is that the two shadow figures they first see, aren’t the monsters that Frisk faces....
but it turning out to be Kris and Susie, who’s adventure might be in the Undertale Chapter of Deltarune......I guess that theory might be a bit crazy
and it is not likely to happen.
but I think there could be a possibility of Undertale appearing in Deltarune,
as a future Chapter, and there being a side story within the Undertale Chapter within Deltarune, and in the Undertale Chapter we do not have control of Frisk.
but we still hold some control over Kris, and it could turn out that in the Undertale Chapter, Frisk is on their Geno-Run and this time it isn’t the Player that is making them do it.....because in that Chapter we aren’t in control of Frisk and Chara isn’t either.
I do have a theory that the Red Soul in Frisk, is NOT Chara or even Frisk.
the Red Soul powering the underground that you can find in the True Lab when you are turning on the power on that generator thing.
if you look closely you will see there is a red type heart in the middle,
which might be Chara’s Soul, and if we do a Geno-Run in might be possible that Chara’s Soul will find a way to talk to us by some form of Soul Telepathic Link.
Chara ending up appearing in Frisk’s mind and speaking to us through the dark mind space in Frisk’s mind.
and the Red Soul that is seen in the Undertale game, the one that can be seen in the fights.......was never Frisk’s Soul.
the Red Soul is the Player, this means that the Red Soul in Deltarune
is also the Red Soul from Undertale and they are both the Players.
if this is true that would mean without the players,
Frisk in the canon of Undertale, is Soulless.
if we think about it, Frisk would have their own Soul in the Fanon AU.
it might be possible that Kris, when not having the Red Soul/Player’s Soul in them.
they are not as they appear to be, yes they could come off as a bit mischievous.
like with the whole eating all the pie
but what if there is a more darker side to Kris, and what if it turned out there was another Soul controlling Kris and they are the ones that rip out our Soul out from Kris?
remember what Asriel said before in Undertale,
when both he and Chara shared a body, the control over the body was split between them.
it’s possible that Kris has more than one soul in them,
one being their own, the second being the one who acts as a villain,
and the third being us the players.
and if we decide to kill any one in the Deltarune Chapters
(or at least try to....)
then that might give the second soul controlling Kris even more control.
or not.....it could be that Kris only has two souls in them,
their soul and the Player’s soul.
I do have a theory that Kris might be the Knight,
well either them or Papyrus or Gaster or Asriel.
anyone of those four could be the Knight.
but the top suspect of being the Knight now, is Kris.
and this is thanks to what I have seen in Chapter 2,
both watching the walkthrough and even playing it myself.
it might be possible when we do take over Kris’s body,
we end up freeing Kris from another soul that might be the Knight.
it be interesting if when the choices pop up,
they come in two different colors to show which ones is what the Player would pick or Kris would pick.
the Player could end up choosing to pick what Kris wants,
or the Player could end up picking the the choice that isn’t the color that shows to be what Kris would want.
the color of the choices would be a Turquoise (Kris)
and Red (Player)
depending on the Player, we could choose to go with just the red color choices
or the turquoise color choices, if we choose the turquoise color choices
it can mean we value Kris’s opinion and want to show that their choices matter.
it be interesting if they add that in a future chapter.
I'm thinking of changing my tumblr name again, even if it hasn't been that long since I had changed my first tumblr username...
but I still want to put down my original tumblr name on any new drawings I post on tumblr, just to be safe and so there will be no misunderstandings.
I still want my Tumblr to be about a Deltarune-Flowey The Flower,
so even if I do change my tumblr username to something that isn't "Flowey"
I still want to be Flowey The Flower type.....as well as a Crossover.
and if I do decided to change my tumblr username for the second time.
going from floweytheflower-of-deltarune to [redacted]
I will have to edit the last drawing post I had put up that had floweytheflower-of-deltarune on it.
I will keep thinking about it.
but anyway the Chapter 2 of Deltarune was really REALLY awesome.
and it does seem to be a bit more epic than Undertale.
which once again I still love Undertale, but Chapter 2 has out did it.
for some reason Queen reminds me of White Diamond.
I do have a theory about Susie,
that either one she is a orphan or two she comes from a abusive home
and one or both of her parents might treat her badly.
and she let’s out her anger by bullying others
and the reason why she eats chalk and the other stuff she shouldn’t.
is because she isn’t getting enough to eat at home and might be malnourished.
Susie might also not be only child, she might be a older sister or younger sister.
and her bond with Lancer, taking up the Big Sister Role to him.
might show she has a Protective Big Sister side to her.
it might be possible that she gives half of her food to her younger sibling
and Susie doesn’t eat much at home because of how her parents treat both her and her little sibling.
if it is true that Susie has a younger sibling, it might be possible that Susie’s younger sibling is in Toriel’s class.
and given some info in the Chapter 2,
we might know the bio-gender of Susie’s sibling.
which if you read what I wrote on top about not reading this unless you beaten Chapter 2....
I can say now, that it is possible that Susie might have a little sister.
and the little sister might be in Toriel’s class.
I did do a drawing of what I think Susie’s little sister might look like.
as well as what Susie’s Mom might look like too.
but I don’t want to post them just yet.
it be cute if Susie’s little sister appeared in a future chapter
and once meeting Noelle, Berdly and Kris.
the little sister tells them “you can’t have my big sis! big sis is mine!”
of course Noelle might find this really precious, maybe it will remind her how much she loved her older sister when she was Susie’s little sister’s age.
speaking of Noelle’s sister, I did draw up a ship drawing between her and Deltarune’s Asriel.
if both the Holiday and Dreemurr families are both Boss Monsters
then I hope they reveal that in a future chapter.
it might be possible that both the Dreemurr and Holiday families
come from a Royal heritage,
if this is true that would make Noelle technically a Princess.
I’m calling Fan Headcanon on that theory.
also it is pretty obvious that Yandere Noelle is canon.
because of what we see in Chapter 2.
it might be possible that Kris has three souls in them,
one being theirs, the other being the Player and the other being possibly the Knight.
Kris’s true soul might be Turquoise blue type color.
what trait a Turquoise Soul is, well maybe it will be hinted in the game.
I really love Chapter 2 of Deltarune, and I know that Chapter 3 will be worth the wait.
and if Sans was hinting in Chapter 2 about Chapter 3, we might see it in a few years....then again I could be wrong about Sans hinting.
sadly we didn’t get to meet Papyrus in Chapter 2,
but we just have to be patient.
I think that besides the Players choices mattering in the game,
I think Kris’s choices should matter too.
so when the choices do pop up, they should come in Red for the Player
and Turquoise for Kris.
if we choose the turquoise color choices, it is still gonna be Kris’s choice
as it shows we are picking what Kris wants.
it be interesting if that happens.
also I would still like to know who Mike is that is mention in Chapter 2.
it might not be the one that is in the credits, so it has to be a different Mike all together, but who they are is unknown.
I hope some of you agree that the choices of the Player and Kris,
should be in Red and Turquoise.
we might be the Red Soul in both Undertale and Deltarune,
but we should try to look at it being in a symbiotic relationship.
where we make sure to keep Kris and their friends safe,
and try to fight off the other soul that had control of them before we came into their lives in Chapter 1.
also it might be possible that while both Undertale and Deltarune are two different timelines and AUs of each other.
it could be possible that before the start of those two games,
one could travel between if he machine that allowed it was turned on.
the Sans from Deltarune, might of came from a non-stop Geno Route Timeline
and had no other choice but to take both himself, his brother and other survivors to the Deltarune Timeline where they would be safe from Frisk.
I and a lot of other fans might believe this to be canon, and it would make sense given the evidence of the former Grilby’s turned into convenience store.
like what if in a future Chapter that is called “Undertale: Geno-Route”
it shows the world that Sans and his brother came from
and Sans ends up telling Kris, Susie and the others that he had to leave because it was becoming too dangerous and he didn’t want to watch his brother die again by the hands of the human named Frisk.
the Frisk that we the Players make to be more innocent and being full of love.
might be different from the Frisk that is in the canon of the game
and who knows how Frisk was before we the Player’s taken control of them.
but we do know that the Red Soul in Deltarune, could be the same one in Undertale, which would mean that we the Players are the Red Soul.
and while Kris could of had their own Turquoise Soul before we came into the picture.
and Chara could have the same color Red Soul as the Player,
which is being used to power the underground.
it could turn out that Frisk in the canon of Undertale,
is Soulless and is only given a Soul that belongs to the Player....
so Flowey might be right about Frisk’s Soul not being theirs.
I am glad I finally figured out why I couldn’t seem to play Deltarune Chapter 1&2 at first, it had to do with not beating the new save I had that had to do with the first Deltarune Chapter 1 before the version that had Chapters 1 and 2 came out.
if you beat the first version, then when you click on the new Deltarune Chapters 1&2, the blue popup message wont show up and the game will run normally.
so it’s best to keep the original Deltarune download.

What are your views on UT!Chara? Are they good, neutral, evil (in your opinion) (No need to answer this ask if you do not want to)
hoo boy let me just. you’ve activated a Secret Essay(tm) of mine anon fbdshabl sorry i’ll try to keep it short LMAO
(under a read more just for a) length b) ut spoilers.. even tho im p sure most of you have beaten the game but who knows lol c) uhh Chara’s story is pretty dark so this has mentions of abuse and whatnot so please be aware of that ^^;;)
Morality alignment wise is like. Idk. I’m bad with assigning that half the time because it’s all subjective in a way right oh no my true neutralness surfaces like for example I wouldn’t do something I think is bad right? But someone else might think it’s bad. (Like my 16 yr old self might consider me today a terrible person just bc I like Undertale lol 16 yr old me is rude don’t listen to them) If I were to put them on a kind of DnD like alignment scale though, I think I would probably put them in a lawful neutral kind of alignment, maybe leaning a bit towards lawful evil.
But here’s the thing. Without Chara having any sort of backstory as to why they hate humans? It’s very hard for me to gauge where their motivation lies for the things that they did. Based off of what Asriel tells you when you talk to him in the Ruins, the genocide route, and the bits of narration we have, we can pretty much assume:
- Chara was pretty abusive, this is undeniably a fact even from just watching the videos in the True Lab; and while Asriel recognizes this, he didn’t want to lose them because they were the only one he felt close to. Which is likely part of the abuse they dealt by making him feel alone without them. - Chara hated humanity for reasons they would not disclose to Asriel, but it’s pretty implied that they attempted to commit suicide by jumping into Mt. Ebott. This could mean that they were abused in their past, which could in turn provide reason for their abusive nature (because, with Chara being a child, it’s very likely that they took in the personalities of those around them to make their own person up. Even though they were hurting, they didn’t exactly know why, and even still, many people with an abusive history that end up abusive themselves might not even recognize that they’re being abusive, which might be the case for Chara as well.) - Chara probably cared for Asriel. There’s a lot of things to indicate that they may have faked it or maybe it seems like they didn’t by their abusive nature towards Asriel, but it’s unlikely that Chara would fake caring about someone. If they jumped off the side of a mountain because they hated the people they were around so much, there’s very little reason for them to pretend they liked someone at the potential expense of their own happiness. More likely than not, Chara desperately wanted to keep Asriel close, but ended up being really controlling in an attempt to keep him close. Additionally, when you hug Asriel at the end of the True Pacifist route, the line “Hah... I don’t want to let go...” is said by the narrator, indicating it may have been Chara who said it. But considering how Sans also has lines that are spoken silently and in the default font, this may not be entirely accurate.  - Imma go off for a second about genocide because i have a pet peeve about when people suddenly decide that Chara is the one that caused it. This doesn’t make any sense -- but at the same time, with little to no games considering the Player and Player-Insert character to be two seperate characters, it’s no surprise to me that people i guess “projected” onto Chara. However, if you seperate the player from Frisk (in the same manner that Kris and the Player are seperate in Deltarune), it becomes easier to understand. Chara had nothing against the monsters. They liked monsterkind. It’s extremely unlikely that they would have the motivation to kill all of the monsters on their own. This wasn’t created until far into the genocide route, where the player has done most of the work for them. Chara is now living on pure Determination, which as we know is void of care and purely puts a person on a path of achieving their last desire, and once they wake up like this, with most of monsterkind already dead... well, what else is there to live for? They already attempted to kill humanity, failed, and now the only people they treasured have fallen like flies. Nothing matters in this world. Might as well delete the whole thing to finish the job. (also Frisk doesn’t have any motivations of their own either... unlike Kris they are shown to have no specific motivations (that i’m aware of?) one way or another and don’t reject the player ever so the idea that a canon frisk would reject the genocide route doesn’t make sense to me either. obvs au’s are exempt because they’re free real estate lmao anyway this is unrelated) - Chara’s a very calculated and observent person as well -- just look at how they died? They weren’t even afraid of death. They poisoned themselves with full faith that Asriel would take their Soul and bring them back to life (which also goes back to my point about how much Chara cared for Asriel, since, if they didn’t trust him, they would not have left him with that huge responsibility) by absorbing their Soul into his own body so they could exist as one. Chara saw their death as a stepping stone in their plan. All this from just seeing Asgore accidentally eat buttercups once and getting sick. A whole plan to get revenge on the people who hurt them from that. They even made a statement about wanting to be placed back on the Surface just to cover Asriel’s ass when he eventually took Chara on his own to the Surface. - okay this is probably just more of a me thing, but I’ve never gotten the whole “Chara hates Sans” concept. But considering I also don’t really think of Chara as the one who attempted the genocide route, I guess it makes sense. Chara probably doesn’t care about Sans one way or another, really, and Sans probably has very little idea who Chara is. I’ve always seen Sans’s statements during his battle said directly towards the Player, more or less using Frisk as the messenger -- like, for example (yes I have this on hand don’t judge me):
“sounds strange, but before this i was secretly hoping we could be friends. i always thought the anomaly was doing this because they were unhappy. and when they got what they wanted, they would stop all this. and maybe all they needed was. i dunno. some good foods, some bad laughs, some nice friends. but that’s ridiculous, right? yeah. you’re the type of person who won’t EVER be happy.”
- (cont) At this point it sort of taps into something I was gonna write for that Sans essay but here we go. I bolded “the anomaly” because this is the point where he directly refers to the player as their own individual in the game. What’s the only thing that’s different between Undertale and any moments of his life previous? The player. Hence, anomaly. Even Chara would have existed before the player showed up, right? Chara fell sometime within the 2010′s according to the opening of the game, and in between that time and when Frisk showed up, 6 other humans fell into the Underground. Clearly none of them had the same powers Frisk did, because otherwise, they would have not died and left their Soul behind for Asgore to use. That leaves one thing different -- player interference. Chara even directly states that the player is the one who woke them up with Determination, meaning they were asleep (or dead) for every year previous to their arrival. Sans probably only knows them as “the first human” like every other monster in the Underground (aside from the Dreemurs, of course).
i could probably go on for a while. but i will save you the time you probably didn’t want to spend reading this already by shutting up fdbshafb

♦ Golly, it’s been a hot second! This may as well be a bit of a tradition; posting an update whenever a certain game does, huh?
Anyhow;
♦ TL:DR; Underfade/Colorless and its subsequent AUs, as well as the rest of the Undertale blogs under my wings, are in an indefinite hiatus. Should the faded!Frisk AU ever revive, then this blog (fadedtale) will serve as the main hub for it. The original blog will no longer be running at all.
♦ I’m doing great by the way!... but if this little message somehow reaches out to others from this tiny corner of the wide internet, here’s a full report on the status of things;
--
       – UNDERFADE/FADEDTALE RELATED –
❥ Why is fadedtale becoming the main blog for your AUs when you still have the original blog?
♦ Ha ha, it’s quite simple really!
Tumblr media
I no longer have access to the original blog.
The email I used for it? I can’t remember it. Any record I have saved for what that email could be is also unfindable?? Please believe me when I say that I have tried near everything I could to try and recover the blog. A solid portion of the time away from this AU is the utter despair I felt not finding any trace of what made that blog in the first place.
Watch me say that and then find the email I need to claw my way back into it. Until then;
Goodbye, Underfade/Colorless It will forever exist as a relic of its time; a personally cringeworthy yet humble seedling for the monstrosity of a brainworm it is even to this day.
❥ Underfade/Colorless, cringeworthy?
♦ Immensely!
Not because it’s an Undertale AU, and not because Undertale is. Undertale is genuinely, unironically, epic and joy inducing -- thus, the work I’ve done for Undertale through these AUs is also joy inducing.
However, as the years have passed, I’ve become increasingly unhappy with how I managed things. I can’t look at that blog without feeling like I’m drinking raw lime juice, ha ha.
On the plus side; I’m happy with how much I’ve grown and changed since the blog’s establishment! That’ll be my overall takeaway... even if my past, not-nearly-as-cool self may forever exist within its own bubble of the internet.
❥ What about your other blogs?
♦ I have no idea what the fresh hell is happening with my other blogs, as basically the only blog I do have access to still is fadedtale. So... my other UT blogs share the same fate as the original faded!Frisk blog: stasis.
❥ So... what’s the plan?
♦ Well-!
As much as I want to come back and finish what I started, it has been difficult to find the motivation to.
Between real life, finding myself with real (!) paying (!!) art jobs, getting the therapy and rest I need to in between contract work, surviving 2020 and building myself up to higher heights, there hasn’t been much room at all for these AUs. I cannot guarantee, at all, that I will have the time or energy to return and work/roleplay for this as I once did.
I did think of just writing out at least the Underfade/Colorless AU and putting it someplace like Ao3, either as a series of notes or as a flimsily written fic, with either or being accompanied by the artwork I have accumulated on and off throughout my years’ long hiatus. I’m perpetually on the fence on this front!
Maybe by the time deltarune Ch. 7 is out, we’ll come back to all of this.
--
       – UNDERTALE RELATED –
❥ CIN, CIN, CIN, DELTARUNE CHAPTER 2
♦ YO
WHY DO YOU THINK I’M WRITING THIS STATUS UPDATE. COINCIDENCE??? NO
In all seriousness; deltarune chapter 2 was a delightful and inspirational experience!! The series really is a nostalgic-feeling one. It’s why I keep coming back to it I think, ha ha. I hope everyone’s had a fun time with the new chapter, too!
--
      – GENERAL NEWS –
❥ How’ve things been?
♦ I graduated college! I work as a full-time 2D animator! If you see my name in places, you can go “whoa! That’s a bird!”
I’ve been to weddings, I’ve been to graduations, I’ve been across the country, and I’ve been at home with my loved ones for over a year...
All in all, I’ve been just fine!
❥ What have you been up to lately?
♦ 2D animation contract work, mostly! Being loosely active in my typical haunts, too. I want to say my most active one nowadays is Discord, ha ha.
One of these days, it would be nice to pick up my britches and make my own game or webcomic. My current work in the 2D animation scene is saving up for that sort of dream.
Maybe I’ll see you there! Maybe not. I’ll let you know when deltarune chapter 7 lands.
❥ I want to talk to you! How do I do that?
♦ Echoing my last status update; I’m on Discord! If we don’t share a Discord server or if we haven’t RP’d when I was active, then... whoops.
The next best option is skybluescarf, which is my permanently queue-ing fandom blog. It may take a month or year to see messages from there.
❥ Anything else you want to mention?
♦ Kris, Chara and Frisk all canonically use they/them pronouns 🎉 This is an indisputable canonical fact and I’ve gotten enough therapy to take pride in my assertiveness, which I am exercising right now in order to aggressively stand for this notion.
Anyone who ships these characters with adults are free to take a vacation to hell!
Anyone who ships Cha//risk or any of the human children with Asriel, romantically, can also give me a wide berth. I see them all as friends/siblings and am firmly asserting this as well.
Otherwise, that should be all for now. Thank you all for your time and patience.
I’ll see you all later!

The True Nature of Deltarune
Tumblr media
Deltarune Chapter 1 has been out for over a year now, and being the big UT/DR fan that I am, I’ve been slowly mulling over both games, reading many fan theories and putting together my own interpretation of what I believe the nature and goal of Deltarune will be. This will be a long one so grab some popcorn, put on your matpat hats and click to keep reading!
So what is Deltarune? Is it a sequel to Undertale? Is it a prequel? Is it an alternate universe? Is it the coming of age story of a bunch of teens? Is it a complex meta-narrative on the nature of video games?
The answer is yes to all of the above. And to begin delving into this we must first understand the creator of this game: Toby Fox.
Tumblr media
I won’t toot Toby’s Fox’s horn too much, we all know how talented and hardworking he is, but he’s also very emotionally perceptive and empathic. His general disposition is reminiscent of avant-garde artists that push the boundaries of artistic creation in a medium.
Toby loves mysteries, and in the early version of Undertale there was an included file that disparaged hackers and went on to say that it’s difficult to add mysteries in games these days due to data miners and such.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, this did not stop Toby from lovingly adding quite a few big mysteries to Undertale that have yet to be resolved. Knowing Toby and his strong desire to share his story, a story that according to him, kept him awake at night:
“For the past 3 years I've been waking up in the middle of the night unable to go back to sleep because I've been thinking about the scenes that happen in the game. Even though so many details are still hazy, I really want to show you the things I've been thinking about. That's really my only reason for making this game. If I don't show you what I'm thinking, I'll lose my mind.“
I don’t believe Toby will let these mysteries go unanswered, and it is here that we can begin to understand what Deltarune is about.
The Mystery of W.D. Gaster
Tumblr media
Truly, the biggest mystery of Undertale is that of W.D. Gaster: former royal scientist, creator of the CORE and the Determination Extraction machine.
A player can go through the entirety of Undertale multiple times and never even hear word of Gaster’s existence. This is because all the events that pertain to him are hidden behind a value in the game’s files known as the “FUN value”. Outside of actually manipulating this file manually yourself, it is, to the average player, random. The FUN value can trigger multiple different events throughout the game, some of which include running into “Followers of Gaster” or even Gaster himself.
Tumblr media
While the latter has nothing to say before he “boings” out of existence, the former Followers all tell an eerie tale of a scientist who fell into his own creation and was scattered across time and space.
But hold on. Time and space? Why does that sound familiar?
Ah yes, during the Sans battle he speaks about an “massive anomaly in the timespace continuum”.
Tumblr media
And during this battle Sans says a lot of other cryptic things without context, for example, he laments not being able to “go back” somewhere. But where or when is he referring to?
Tumblr media
He mentions how he and others were monitoring time-lines and their readings showed them stopping and starting, jumping left and right, and eventually ending. Who was he monitoring these readings with? This all seems incredibly scientific and sci-fi, I thought Sans was just a silly skeleton, is he some kind of time cop? (he does have a “badge” in his workshop) He also uses skeletal weapons known as “Gaster Blasters”.
Tumblr media
What…? Gaster Blaster?
Okay, now we KNOW Sans DEFINITELY has some connection to this mysterious scientist W.D. Gaster, but what? Well, for starters W.D. Gaster is short for Wing Dings Gaster, a type of font that he also speaks in.
Tumblr media
Who else is named after and speaks in specific font types? Sans and Papyrus of course!
Tumblr media
Furthermore, in the concept sketches for Papyrus, Toby wrote and redacted parts of a message that says: “has a brother named comic sans and a [BLANK] named [BLANK]”.
Tumblr media
Who is this mysterious redacted person and what is their relationship to Sans and Papyrus? The easy money is on a family member, and for sake of argument lets use the prediction most of the fandom has already concluded and accepted: that Sans and Papyrus have a father named Gaster.
So Sans and Papyrus have a long lost father that was a scientist. This explanation would begin to explain why Sans has a weapon named after him, and why he wanted to go back” to some place or time, perhaps in an effort to save him from his fate.
There’s a hidden event in Undertale where if you reset after listening to Sans speak about LOVE and EXP in a pacifist route, and initiate the conversion a couple of times in a row, he’ll catch on by the expression your face that you’ve heard it before and will surmise that you’re a time traveller and give you secret code words to tell his past self.

This will lead to him giving you the key to his room which ends up just being a prank at first.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then you find a key to the secret workshop/basement hidden behind his house.
Tumblr media
Once you enter the workshop, you’ll find some blueprints written in symbols you can’t read (wing dings?) and a curtain covering a machine that doesn’t seem to be working, among other things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toby Fox tweeted a message regarding this machine a few days after Undertale’s release around the time people were figuring out FUN values and the secrets surrounding Sans and Gaster.
Tumblr media
“You’ve all seen the happiest outcome. Neither of them could fix the machine, no matter how hard they tried. No one can.”
This tweet seems to imply that if the machine could be fixed that Undertale could have a happier outcome.
And this my friends, is the gateway to the nature of Deltarune.
Tumblr media
Deltarune, according to Toby Fox, is a game for players that have completed Undertale. But what does it mean to complete Undertale, and I mean, TRULY complete it? Toby often expressed that he wasn’t happy with how people told others how to play the game, that it is best played completely blind. Having played Undertale blind myself, and having watched others do the same, the natural way the game is meant to progress is that first players will experience the Neutral Ending, followed by the Pacifist Ending, and Finally the Genocide ending. This is because the game cruelly plays against your expectations of how an RPG should work and this almost guarantees that you will kill at least one monster your first play through. As if the fact that the fight button is always the default position in battle isn’t enough, in the early parts of the game you are told that you may need to weaken a monster before you can spare them. This naturally brings to mind the systems of Pokémon, where you have the best chance to catch a Pokémon if it’s at low health. Well, if you try this during the Toriel fight, as most do, you’ll find that as soon as you get close to critical health, you’ll instantly kill her.
Tumblr media
Poor goat mama..
Difficulty-wise, the neutral route is the most easy, because you can level up a little and gain more HP. The Pacifist route is a bit harder because your HP is lower, but with the experience you gain from the previous route, it should prove no problem. Finally the Genocide route is the most difficult because it takes a concerted effort that implies knowledge of the previous routes to kill every single monster.
So an ideal Deltarune player has knowledge of all three main routes of Undertale, and may have experienced or heard of Gaster.
Is this player you? If so, ask yourself, what would a “happier outcome” look like to you? And be honest. Many fans in the Undertale community have already answered this question in the form of fanworks. Some of the most common elements among them are as follows:

1) Frisk and all the monsters are free from the Underground and living on the surface with humans.
2) Asriel is revived.
3) Gaster is revived.
4 )Chara is revived.
The revival of Asriel, Chara, and Gaster are the undisputed holy grails in terms of happiest endings that the UT community dreams of and creates endless fan works to explore the possibilities. Toby knows this well.
Using a speech pattern attributed to Gaster, Toby teased the release of Deltarune Chapter 1
Tumblr media
“I LOOK FORWARD TO CREATING A NEW FUTURE WITH YOU.” stands out quite a bit to me as the prospect of a “happier outcome” is already tied to Gaster and Sans, now a “new future” is connected.
And when Deltarune released, and fans had a chance to play it, they found:
1) All the monsters are free and living on the surface.
Tumblr media
2) Asriel is alive and well and living his best life.
Tumblr media
3) A voice with the same speech pattern as Gaster (based on Japanese text) brought you to this world and attempted to give your own vessel before…
Tumblr media
4)…a voice with the same speech pattern as Chara (also based on Japanese text) discarded it.
Tumblr media
Right off the bat Toby seems to have given fans what they wanted, a perfect future ending. But as you continue to play, you begin to realize that this may not be the world you dreamed of.
First, while all the monsters are living on the surface, they aren’t the same people from Undertale, for example: Undyne has never met Alphys, and the amalgamates that went to live with their families at the end of Undertale are deceased in this world. And while Asriel is alive, it’s not THE Asriel we were so determined to save in Undertale.
Gaster’s presence permeates Deltarune so thoroughly it would take awhile to point out every example, but it seems clear that he’s present in some form.
And Chara? You only need to see the ending cutscene of chapter 1 to know that they are around in a similar fashion as when they possess Frisk in the True Pacifist after a Genocide ending.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But their presence is also present in subtle ways. For example, if you attempt to play the piano in the hospital in Hometown and then speak to the receptionist, she comments that Kris’ playing isn’t the same as usual (Likely due to our control), but it seems that Chara may be good at piano. Interestingly, on the cover artwork for the official Undertale Piano Collection 2 book, Frisk can be seen holding a knife playing a key on a piano in the judgement hall filled with bones.
Tumblr media
So for better or worse, what appears to be the original Chara and Gaster from Undertale are present in Deltarune, in some meta form or another. And maybe that’s the key: “Meta-characters”. After all, you yourself as a player are a “Meta-character”. You can ask the inhabitants of this new world questions that only someone with knowledge of a True Pacifist route would have, such as being able to ask Undyne about Alphys. Asking her this only makes sense if you yourself completed a True Pacifist route before playing Deltarune.
Ralsei, the lonely prince.
Tumblr media
Toby being the trickster dog he is, he didn’t just give us 1 Asriel and call it a day, no he gave us 2.
Ralsei is quite clearly meant to be a version of Asriel because not only do they have similar or identical dialogues, but he was also was meant to look more like him before Toby decided to give him his Black Mage look.
Tumblr media
There are even strong parallels obviously meant to create an emotional response and connect Ralsei to the feelings people had for Asriel in Undertale by giving the players the option to hug him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ralsei is quite the mystery on his own. And while he’s most certainly sweet and lovable, there’s undeniably some disconcerting things about him such as:
-Why does he know Kris and Susie’s names?
-Who did he learn the prophecy from? “Foretold by time and space” isn’t a good answer (or is it?).
-What did he say to Kris when the player SOUL wasn’t present in the prison?
-When he’s KO’d in battle, what does he become? Apparently he can still eat to regain HP when in this shrunken form.
Tumblr media
Ralsei seemed to be under the impression that violence wasn’t needed in this world, but upon nearly being defeated by the King after mistakenly healing him, Ralsei says “This isn’t a world where kindness always wins, is it?”
Tumblr media
The way he says this seems to imply he knows of other worlds and that they have different rules. Perhaps he comes from a world where someone being kind to everyone they met had great results?
There are definitely things that Ralsei is not telling us, whether this means he’s up to no good will remain to be seen, however, I would like to take this opportunity to make a prediction based on the previous understanding that the original Chara and Gaster are present in this new world in meta forms, and assert that Undertale Asriel, the final piece of the perfect ending puzzle is present in Deltarune in his own meta-character form of Ralsei. Perhaps the form he shrinks into when KO’d is one we know well...
Tumblr media
There is that unused Flowey face...
Tumblr media
Add glasses and a hat and...
Tumblr media
but that’s just a game theory!
And I can't help but wonder about the dark heart on Ralsei's chest and this merchandise in the Deltarune section of fangamer that specifically features a quote from Undertale about the prophecy of Delta Rune (that turns out to be about Asriel in the TP ending, and Chara in the Genocide ending) "There is a prophecy. The Angel... The One Who Has Seen The Surface... They will return. And the underground will go empty."
Tumblr media
It's also the Deltarune game logo
Tumblr media
Because the merchandise is called Darkheart, it made me immediately think of the dark heart on Ralsei's chest, and having an Undertale quote about Asriel/Chara makes it all the more mysterious...
Regardless, in just the first chapter of Deltarune, the elements of the “happier outcome” connected to Sans’ machine are present. But how do they all connect? Well, let’s look at the other characters in Deltarune, starting with:
Lancer
Tumblr media
Oh Baby Santa Claus, how we love you so. It’s hard to overlook how similar Lancer is to Sans. They’re both hilarious in their own way, both ride bikes, have similar color-schemes, both have a love for tomato-based products, and both have some scientific/engineering affinity (Sans and his workshop, Lancer and his “Lancer Industries”).
But that’s not all, the door to Sans’ room is identical to the warp doors found in the Dark World that Lancer hails from, and Sans’ warp ability also makes the same sound effect as these doors as well.
Tumblr media
Lancer is a member of the FUN gang (remember the FUN value?), that, as far as we know currently, has 3 other members besides himself: Kris, Ralsei, and Susie (with the possibility of Noelle and others in the future).
Speaking of Susie, her name (or a version of it) popped up in Undertale prior to Deltarune’s release when the game was released on the Switch. By speaking to the Gaster Follower “Clamgirl”, you can learn of a girl named “Suzy”, that you will meet her soon, and that “in life’s grand scheme, she might be why you came here in the first place...”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Upon receiving this dialogue, checking the drawers in Sans workshop will reveal a card with a drawing of 3 people smiling and the words “don’t forget”.
Tumblr media
“Don’t Forget” is the vocal theme of Deltarune sung by Laura Shigihara, and the melody from the ending verse,“Don’t forget, I’m with you in the dark.”, is leitmotifed throughout the entire Deltarune chapter 1 OST. The connections between Sans, the FUN gang, Gaster, and by extension Undertale and Deltarune are quite apparent. Perhaps the actions of the FUN gang in the Deltarune world will have an affect on the FUN value in Undertale.
Based on all the evidence we have now, I am going to make a bold prediction:
Lancer is literally a younger Sans.
That’s right, Toby Fox made Baby Sans before Disney and Sega made Baby Yoda and Baby Sonic.
Deltarune’s Dark World is the past from the perspective of Sans and Gaster (or a recreation of it). How Lancer becomes Sans will likely be a very large part of Deltarune’s narrative, and once he becomes Sans, he will exist as a separate meta entity that can traverse different worlds, even if versions of himself already exist in some form there (similar to Ralsei and Asriel).
We’ve seen that if characters are exposed to elements that make it clear they live in a video game world, whether this be Determination for humans and Flowey, a time-space accident for Gaster, or a strange man whispering to Jevil, these characters become something wholly different, more powerful, and begin to become more similar to players with the ability to SAVE, RESET, or use abilities that seem beyond the scope of the game (e.g. Photoshop Flowey, Jevil’s ability to speak, etc). Undertale and Deltarune are video games about video games.
So if it is to be believed that Gaster is Sans’ father, and that Lancer is a younger Sans, then it stands to logical reason that whoever Lancer’s father is, that they must be Gaster.
Tumblr media
No, not the King, there is another. A “Lesser-dad”.
Tumblr media
Yes, Rouxls Kaard.
“GOD DAMNIT”
Rouxls Kaard, or “Rules Card”, or if you rearrange his name “A Dark Soul Rx”, wait, Rx as in prescription? As in a doctor? Dark Soul as in Mr. Darkness Gaster himself? Too much of a stretch? Maybe. Although you can’t deny they have similar appearances.
If Rouxls Kaard is Gaster, and therefore the father of Sans and Papyrus, then he’s undeniably similar to one of his sons. Rouxls Kaard seems to be quite passionate about puzzles, (despite not having a natural predilection to them). I could see Papyrus gaining an affinity for puzzles by being raised by such an individual, they both have quite flamboyant personalities. And let’s not forget that there are also hints that Rouxls Kaard may be inclined to creating scientific devices such as the “Control Crowne” he uses to control K.Round.
Tumblr media
Hmm, controlling other people… sounds familiar to what we the player are doing to Kris… and who was it that was initially going to give us control of a vessel before we lost said control to Chara’s intervention? Control seems to play a big part in Deltarune doesn’t it?
Also, isn’t his manner of speech is reminiscent of a silly ye olde knight. Wait, wasn’t there a Knight causing trouble in the Dark World? Hm.
So something is going to turn Lancer and Rouxls Kaard into Sans and Gaster, respectively.
Now remember the CORE that Gaster built? This one?
Tumblr media
It turns geothermal energy into magical electricity via an unknown means with one of the byproducts being ozone, which is corrosive and could potentially make someone very melty. This is what it looks like on the inside.
Tumblr media
Lots of blues of varying hues with white accents. Kinda reminds me of Rouxls Kaard and the other “card” people’s color schemes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a coincidence! Oh and apparently the layout of the CORE can be re-arranged or something:
"I work at the CORE. The inside is a maze made of swappable parts... That means we can shuffle the layout at will." - Hotland NPC
Almost sounds like a sliding puzzle…
Tumblr media
Finally, Gaster is referred to as “The man who speaks in hands”, likely due to his Wing Dings font that contains a lot of hand symbols, however, it isn’t a stretch to also apply that epithet to Rouxls Kaard, after all, the Rules Card speaks in hands as well. Hands of cards.
Susie
Tumblr media
Can’t forget Susie. Unfortunately, there’s not much we can say about how her role in all this will play yet. If we are to believe that the “Suzy” that Clamgirl references is Susie, then it’s clear that she’ll be key, perhaps as a catalyst for all the big changes some characters will need to undergo...
I will say that I think it’s interesting that toby specifically has a character in Hometown comment that humans are made of blood (and implying the monsters are not),
Tumblr media
and Susie says:
Tumblr media
“Everybody bleeds, right?”
From our understanding of monsters in Undertale, monsters don’t bleed, they turn to dust. But, maybe Darkners can bleed. If we believe Sans is a Darkner, it may explain this:
Tumblr media
It could be ketchup. It could be a Darkner thing. Lancer does mention blood casually. But if only humans and Darkners bleed, then why would a monster like Susie say “everybody bleeds”?
Tumblr media
So what is Deltarune you ask? I think it’s:
1) A story about Sans, Papyrus, and Gaster’s past and future. We get to experience their past in the Dark World, and speak with their future selves in the Light World. But these future versions of Sans and Papyrus may not be as far into the future as the Sans and Papyrus we meet in Undertale. Remember, Sans had an Ice-E’s crossword in Undertale? Ice-E’s-P’E’zza is a restaurant in Hometown. Papyrus may also be younger than he was in Undertale because Sans, an adult who runs a grocery store, thinks a teen like Kris should hang with his little brother, and it would be “weird” if he were there with them.
2) A story about post-Undertale Asriel, Chara, and Gaster. Asriel/Flowey maintains his new form as Ralsei thanks to the power of the Dark Fountain. He now lives in what is/was Sans’ childhood home. Whether he knows this or remembers the events of Undertale is unknown, but it is my belief that he holds a deep connection to the Asriel we all wished to save. Chara resides within Kris in a similar manner as they did at the ending of a UT True Pacifist Ending after surrendering the red SOUL to them in a Genocide ending. Does this mean that Kris’s body or “vessel” is Frisk? This seems to be heavily implied by Kris’ outfit taking on the same color scheme as Frisk’s UT shirt while in the Dark World.
3) A coming of age story for a bunch of teens. Kris, Susie, Ralsei, Noelle, Lancer, and all the friends that may join on their adventures are still people regardless of what grand meta narrative is at play involving the nature of their reality. They still need to go to school, fall in love, and worry about growing up and going to university. Noelle will undoubtedly play a large role with Toby’s tease of her as “Lost Girl”, and considering how attached most of the community has already gotten to these characters, it hurts my heart to think about what may befall them as they try their best to live their lives. Does this mean Deltarune’s world is doomed? I hope not... but those save file screens sure are creepypasta...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“IT WAS AS IF IT WAS NEVER THERE AT ALL.”
4) A story about video games and the control (or lack thereof) we have over them. It’s quite clear that we, the player controlling the red soul, is able to influence this new world based on knowledge from Undertale that should have no barring. For example, we can name “Onionsan” who has forgot their own name. One of the options is “Onion”, but why? Is it because we know their name is Onionsan in Undertale? How do we even know if that is actually what this version of them is really named?
Deltarune is so close to the perfect Undertale ending we wanted, but it’s just a little bit wrong. Would it hurt to force Undyne and Alphys to meet and fall in love? To get Toriel and Asgore back together? To make Bratty and Catty friends? If you were given the option in game to do it, would you do it? What if it made their lives worse…? I believe that the fact we are able to influence inhabitants of Deltarune with our Undertale knowledge may have some unforeseen consequences, and perhaps, be what begins this whole situation in the first place. (Paradoxes are the best time travel stories!)
Toby Fox said that Deltarune was the game he originally wanted to make, but whether it was too ambitious or time consuming, his idea evolved into Undertale. Now that he’s creating the game he always wanted to, I believe that he will connect everything we know about them together and resolve the mysteries, after all, Gaster has been waiting for this chance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And maybe, with a little luck and determination, we can create a new future with a happier outcome. If I’ve learned anything from Undertale, it’s that you must hold on to your hopes and dreams, because dreams are the goal of “Determination.”

Undertale/Deltarune Theory: The Two Angels of The Prophecy
Since I’ve been playing Deltarune as of late, I thought I would share some very compelling details I’ve noticed in game that have been rolling around in my mind lately...
This is a theory pertaining both Undertale AND Deltarune, because I found connections between both of them interestingly enough. To start my theory off: I will begin with the very prominent theme in Deltarune of religion. There appears to be a strange emphasis on how religious the home town of Deltarune is, with everyone worshipping some deity called “The Angel.”
Tumblr media
It seems to be done in such a manner, that it is building up that the town is worshipping some false God of sorts. The town itself feels very…off. A very ominous vibe to it, especially with the very creepy bunker to the south of town as well.
The question is.. who is this Angel..? To answer this question, we will have to dig deeper. Another notable theme in Deltarune, is that many items found in the Light World—represent places and people in the Dark World. It mirrors it, essentially.
Tumblr media
In the light world school closet, the cards on the floor represent the card suite inhabitants/card castle. The plush doll represents Seam, etc. Additionally, the red horns in Kris’s house could symbolically represent Ralsei’s presence, with his little red horns.
However... even more interesting enough, is that in the town hospital can be found two angel dolls. One— that was made by Kris and Asriel, where they “wasted the whole time making big wings for it.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the other, which was made by Noelle and her friend—looked like a typical angel doll, only “it’s lack of facial features was unsettling.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This appears to be clear symbolism for two different characters/angels... but whom? The first one, I believe matches the description of Asriel’s final form in Undertale perfectly: it has a rather disproportionate body, with huge over-sized, magnificent wings.
Tumblr media
Additionally, Asriel’s final form matches up with the Deltarune of Gerson’s prophecy, with each part of his angel body aligning with the runes. Gerson also mentions an Angel in his prophecy, saying that it will free everyone from the underground—which Asriel does at the end of Undertale, with the power of the seven souls.
Tumblr media
Then... who is the second angel, who is symbolically represented in the hospital? An angel we haven’t seen yet, but likely will at the end of Deltarune. Based off the evidence/implications given, I believe it is Gaster.
To begin, the second angel doll is described with a lack of features that makes it unsettling—which is very reminiscent of Gaster.
Tumblr media
To build upon this, the angel of Undertale—Asriel— plays a focal point in Undertale’s story. He is not shown until the very end of the game, with the true ending, and is very mysterious at first. On top of this, many.. many songs in Undertale have the leitmotifs of Asriel’s theme: HIS theme.
Meanwhile, Deltarunes soundtrack is heavily focused around Lietmotifs of Gasters theme, with the intro song being called ANOTHER HIM... Another angel, if you will. This implies that he is going to play a heavy role in the story, which is very much seen on the surface level of Deltarune—with the involvement of the “strange knight” as well as the subtext with Jevils backstory, having met a man that made his vision of the world grow “Darker, yet darker” and made him go insane, as told by the tale Seam the shopkeeper tells the protagonist.
Tumblr media
Additionally, the very first castle we see in the game--(not card castle, mind you) has wings on it... much akin to an angel’s, and is spewing a dark fountain forth from it.
Tumblr media
At the end of the chapter of Deltarune, Susie shows clear concern that they did not get rid of the right fountain. One fountain—the original, brought the dark world its life. The other, an unnatural source of darkness to upset the balance. And Ralsei, strangely enough, eagerly directed Kris to get rid of the Card Castle fountain—not the one coming from the Angel’s castle. The Angel’s Castle is also an empty kingdom, with no subjects.. except Ralsei.
Tumblr media
But who is the king? Nobody knows… And a very foreboding music plays in the castle town, adding to the mystery of it. Ralsei, who is quite suspicious enough as it is, (might go into this further in another theory later) will not let Kris inside the castle, stating that Kris must save the world/complete the prophecy first... and then they can come back. Ralsei acts very nervous and distraught when Kris keeps trying to enter the castle, and blocks him from going in. He then shuts Kris out of the kingdom gates, barring him off from going back inside--sinisterly enough.
Additionally, the plot of Deltarune is based off the prophecy, to “banish the Angels heaven”. This makes the Angel seem like a very malicious figure...but why? What are the Angels motives, and what is the “Angels heaven..?” Well, if you talk to Gerson in Undertale, he says an interesting bit of dialogue that could be interpreted a bit differently with my context/point of view. One could argue that he is talking about “the angel of hyper death”, Asriel, when he says the Angel of death, but I believe it not to be the case.
Gerson states the following:
“Lately, the people have been taking a bleaker outlook…callin that winged circle the “Angel of Death”.
A harbringer of destruction, and waitin to “free” us from this mortal realm…”
This seems like a much more sinister view of the Angel, and not like Asriel. Even though Asriel is very threatening, he is still pure of heart, and ends up saving all of Monsterkind in the end. The second angel however? Wants to “free” every one, and brings destruction in his wake. In Deltarune, we see much destruction and chaos being brought about by a strange “knight”, who appeared one day to take over the card kingdom and beyond, using the Chaos King to help him assert control.
Tumblr media
Seam also mentions that he hasn’t seen this much chaos, since the incident that occurred with Jevil—which implies that the stranger and the strange mysterious knight are one and the same. So, what then is the meaning of “free us from this mortal realm…?”, from Gerson’s prophecy of the second angel? Well, interestingly enough: in Deltarune Jevil mentions this line of dialogue in his boss fight, which lines up perfectly with Gerson’s dark prophecy:
“I AM INNOCENT, INNOCENT. I JUST WANTED TO PLAY A GAME, GAME. BUT THE BORING KINGS FOUND SUCH FUN TO BE A TROUBLE. AS PUNISHMENT, THEY CRAVED TO IMPRISION MY BODY. THEY LOST THE CHASE, AND LOCKED UP THEIR ENTIRE RACE, BUILDING A PRISON AROUND THE WHOLE WORLD. NOW I’M THE ONLY FREE ONE”.
This is extremely significant, because Jevil was made aware by the Knight that the world is only a game, and that he can become “free” by ignoring the rules of the game, if you will—to become sentient of the game itself. This matches up perfectly with Gaster: who after being shattered across time and space by falling into his creation, became aware that the world was all just a game.
So why usurp the Dark World? Presumably, to make everyone aware that it is all just a game: to save them, from being stuck forever without choice. To make them free…done in a very twisted way of course, taking over the kingdom, locking up the rulers and all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So why do this? After all he was a former scientist of Asgore’s in Undertale. This is where the symbolism comes in, that I noticed. Gaster seems to be a “fallen angel” of sorts. He was driven into madness after “falling” into his creation— after messing with the balance of things. What that is exactly, is unknown at this time. But it is implied that he discovered the presence of timelines, and tried to figure out how to manipulate them.
Tumblr media
This in a sense, was an act against nature/trying to defy god by trying to figure out the interworking’s of the world’s universe.
Additionally, in Deltarune there is a repeated theme of a “shining light” that guides you—where you save your Soul at. In the bible, the fallen angel Lucifer, who defied God, is likewise represented with a “shining light”. In the files, Gaster is also associated with the number 666—which aligns with the prophecy of him being a dark, fallen angel.
Tumblr media
One could even argue his font/name Wingdings is symbolic, from the wing in the name. It isn’t a stretch to say that Toby got some inspiration from the Bible--he has gotten many inspirations from Undertale from various sources, including Asriel’s symbolism from a Hebrew god/demon named Azrael.
To add unto this theory that links both Asriel and Gaster together as being both angels, is that both were striken by tragedy. Asriel was killed at a very young age, and is forever stuck in an endless purgatory in the body of a flower. Meanwhile, Gaster was forgotten by everyone, including the ones he held closest, and was shattered across time and space. Both characters are implied to have been driven to madness because of this, but with Asriel having a bit more heart/sympathy to him in the very end, (due to having the power of the human Souls to feel compassion again) and freeing all of monsterkind out of a deep care for Frisk.
Tumblr media
Gaster on the other hand…? Seems to be a lot more unforgiving, and much more threatening, seen by his heavily implied actions in Deltarune, taking over kingdoms without mercy, and establishing his power in the Dark World.
Another notable feature between the two characters, is that they both have black markings on their faces, stretching down from their eyes—(Asriel’s markings are seen during his final boss fight.) What are these? Well…one datamined detail (sourced from the Deltarune reddit) from Deltarune might be the answer to this question.
Tumblr media
Both Asriel and Gaster have gone through incredible suffering, so this “pain” could have essentially manifested into the black markings, similar to tears. In the beginning of Deltarune, with the player’s encounter with the narrator/ Gaster, (or at the very least heavily implied...he speaks in the exact same manner) he asks the player what their favorite food is. Two answers, that immediately stand out as strange and bizarre—are pain, and cold—which at first glance is just an off the wall comment/dialogue option, but upon second glance gives us a window into what he has gone through—painful suffering, much like Asriel did, on a plane of existence where they could do nothing. Both characters also have committed horrible actions, due to their fall into madness, (Asriel as Flowey, being stuck in a soulless vessel for ages,) and Gaster, due to existential madness from realizing the entire world is just a game, presumably overthrew an entire kingdom to “free” everyone.
(Almost forgot--) Additionally, another piece of dialogue which links together the Knight and the Angel being one and the same—is a dialogue seen from the Chaos King/Spade King himself. During the battle with him—he mentions multiple times how he obeys the word of the Knight, and with him he shall make a “new world out of Holy Shadows”, which backs up my theory even more, that the folks of the Light world are worshiping a false idol, a dark angel to destroy them all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sound familiar...?
Tumblr media
I believe this is made all the more likely with Undertale being a mirror to Deltarune and vice versa—it would make all the more sense that each game would have an Angel character, considering each deals with a prophecy containing the Deltarune. One Angel of Light, and one of Dark.
Tumblr media
EDIT: Here are some additional findings that make this come all together even more.
*In Undertale, every zone’s monsters reflect the boss monster of the area. (The monsters in Alphys zone are all anime related. The ones in Undyne’s zone are all muscular/into piano like her, etc...) the only area in the game that doesn’t make sense is Mettaton’s zone in the Core. The mobs don’t suit him at all: except when you realize that he wasn’t meant to be the true boss of the Core in the first place, since Alphys made him. If Gaster hadn’t died/become shattered across time and space, he would have been the likely boss monster of that area. What is notable, is that all of the enemies of the Core are primarily knights, mad, some of them use crosses as attacks, have wings, one of them uses a “Morningstar” as a weapon, (possible reference to Lucifer Morningstar) and you have to defeat some of the monsters by “praying”. Not symbolizing Mettaton at all—but rather Gaster, showing that the foreshadowing seen in Deltarune is indeed likely correct.
*The egg in Deltarune is a possible reference to the tale of Adam and Eve, as it aligns very well. A mysterious figure tempts someone behind a tree with a “fruit of knowledge”. Kris is offered the egg by “him”, presumably Gaster. Taking the egg to the Light-World doesn’t change it like all the other items in the game—it still exists in the Light-World—showing the forbidden knowledge that the world is all just a game. Even though it is a secret/not accessed by usual means, the egg is additionally a key item—that might prove more important by the end of the game.

Kris isnt evil.
And yes, kris has his soul throughout the game.
Did everyone forget the pacifist ending post a genocide run?
Frisks eyes shine red, being possessed by chara, where you are unable to control frisk.
And the soul disposal? Chara already owns your soul post genocide in undertale, so they dont need to get rid of it.
But not in deltarune.
You know why chara had to take control at the end?
Because you cant control kris when they're unconscious, or unable to move by themselves. You see this during the end of the chaos king fight, and start of the dark world, where kris has to wake up and get up on his own. And chara didnt take control in the dark world because it was a bad time.
Controlling kris seems to be a consenting agreement, because kris can control himself at any time, without you being able to do anything. Like when they're afraid of susie, and backing up into the locker. Theres also the shielding scene in the chaos king fight. Not to mention the beginning where kris walks into the car, or when he chooses to hold toriels hand in the school They also get mad when mk insults susie after the dark world.
Kris seems to have control over himself whenever they want. So it doesnt seem like you're some sort of puppet master.
Why is this? Well, I have two ideas.
1) is that kris isnt even aware you're controlling him, because your "connection" isnt a master puppeteer and puppet one.
Or two, one that makes more sense and can help explain the rest of deltarune,
2) kris may have had that vessel dream in the beginning. And the text that appears is gaster talking in your place. The reason you made a vessel was because gaster knew about the threat of chara removing kris's soul, to take over and had you create a "backup" so kris would still have a body, and would have a chance to stop chara. Meaning that you'll likely play as your vessel in chapter two.
Why is chara doing this? I feel like this could be chara from the genocide run in undertale, with so much lv that they're unable to be reasoned with, and who's goal is to destroy worlds, and destroyed the undertale one. Let's call them lv-chara
But gaster didnt exist in that world, and he was unaffected by the genocide. But we do know he is observing this world helpless to intervene.
So I believe that after the universe was destroyed in undertale, he decided to craft an entirely new one, since the old world is unable to be saved, as lv-chara has gained absolute control over that universe.
But they wouldnt have that control over a new universe.
So they took every possible measure they could so that the genocide run could never happen again.
This is why "your choices dont matter" because gaster knows about the "anomaly." Which is the player, and all the possible timelines. So gaster got rid of any other timeline. And hell, even in the agreement of the game, he forced you to accept the terms of "you will accept everything that happens from now on."
Why? Well, does the quote "But you refused" ring a bell?
This is why they created the vessel. Because if chara somehow managed to bypass all that, he would be helpless.
This could even explain why the save points look different. Kris doesnt have as much less determination as they did in undertale, giving them enough power for a few resets but not enough to erase the world. (I'll get to kris in undertale shortly)
A few times you dont even reset when you're defeated. You just pop up at the last save point, after you've been defeated. You see this happens when susie defeats you and ralsei. (If you didnt know, when you lose and come back, you get more dialogue where susie rematches you because you arent pleading to not join.) You only reset a few times, like at the jevil fight. This is probably because you dont actually die the other times. Meaning jevil literally kills you.
This even explains why you have three save files.
Because even if chara manages to destroy the world, you'll have two more chances.
This is why gaster forces you into a pacifist run.
Because he hopes, and prays to any unknown being that could be greater than him, that you wont repeat your mistakes.
And if you will, gaster prays that you can't repeat your mistakes.
He doesnt even know if the anomaly will come back, be the same anomaly, or if there will even be an anomoly.
He also created a universe where chara never even existed. Taking their place in this universe is: frisk!
But why would frisk be so okay with this?
They had even less control in undertale. This is an improvement.
But that's not the main reason. You know how gaster is taking every possible precaution? I would say this includes talking to frisk about his plan, and begging them to help.
Frisk, of course never even had a say in the genocide run. Of course they would want to live in a world with control over their soul, (which was sold against their will) no possible threat of genocide, and the ability to live a happy life with all their friends in the underground, with no human vs monster war, where asriel never even became flowey, and where there was no resetting.
"But frisk and kris are different names?" Is frisk even a name? According to how many of me, theres only around a thousand and a half people named frisk. That's an extremely low amount. And this is 2019, so how many of them are kids named after undertale? And when I went on a few sites like baby names, frisk didnt even have any results.
So it's likely that they just asked gaster if they could change it to a name they liked more before the new universe was made. And even if frisk didnt want to change it, theres still reason to. Gaster wants to take every possible precaution, no matter how small or "insignifigant" remember? And that could include changing their name to frisk to make it harder for chara to find them, if they even could.
"But what if I never did a genocide run in undertale?"
That doesnt matter. Because this isnt about your undertale run. Any of ours actually.
Toby fox even tells us that this is a world separate from undertale, and our undertale world will remain exactly how we left it.
This even fits the message of undertale where you "cant undo your actions" you may not be able to undo your actions, but you can move past them, make better decisions, and learn from your mistakes.
And depending on your actions in undertale, you could be the same anomaly or a different one. If you did a genocide run, you're the same anomoly. But if you never did, or hell, never played undertale in the first place, you're a different anomoly.
But when do anomolys take control?
I feel like here, anomolys take control right before a major event. This is why you can see kris is several years older than frisk was. The major event here isnt chara, but the dark world. This is why you create the vessel as soon as you get there.
Gaster doesnt seem to have absolute control over this universe, despite making it.
This is why he makes a "connection" with you. He NEEDS an anomoly. Think about the difference between playing a game and doing it in reality?
Let's say you beat asgore in undertale. You were able to beat him there, but in reality? Be honest. Not only would you not survive one fireball, but you would not have the physical movement, reflexes, or ability to beat him.
In the undertale universe, anomalies are able to do the impossible easily. Gaster needs that ability to beat chara.
And you know the narrator chara theory? If it's true, How could it fit into here if kris still has dialogue boxes, and chara doesnt follow them around?
Like I said kris still has a lot of control. The narrator is likely just kris, if the narrator even is someone.
What do you guys think? Personally, I feel like I made a pretty damn good theory for what's going on in deltarune.

Oh no, undertale on main sideblog
Is anyone talking about the fact that two completely different points in the timeline have been collapsed together? Like, the weirdest thing about this universe isn't that Asriel's alive, it's that he's existing as a teenager/twentysomething at the same time as all the characters from Frisk's era
Susie is one of the best parts of this game and I love her but why is her name spelled differently than Clam Girl's Suzy. Whats going on with that
I also love Lancer A Whole Lot. He's the main reason I hope the Dark World is actually real, even though it probably makes more sense if it's not
I know everyone loves ""Ralsei,"" so I'm sorry, but...I don't trust that fellow. Something's off about that kid. What's Asriel up to
One of the characters called Kris and party "guys or girls" at one point and it made my heart go :(
(I mean "guys or girls" is an awkward enough wording that it might be some kind of intentional...thing, but until it's explicitly canonically stated, I'm ever nervous about the possibility that Toby just stumbled into nb rep by accident)
Who is Kris. Appearance-wise and personality-wise (they're a little creepy, Toriel has to hide the chocolate from them, etc) most signs point to Chara. But then there's the fact that they seem to have been adopted by the Dreemurrs young enough that they didn't realize they were a human at first, while Chara's life was defined by their awareness of their humanity and what it meant for the Underground. Guess they could still be a version of Chara from a radically different universe though.
I've also heard a theory that they're Frisk and Kris was their deadname, so that'd be sad :( Don't really want to believe that the Dreemurrs would insist on deadnaming them though, even in the Bad Timeline.
And this is clearly the Bad Timeline. In this hellish world, Alphys thinks Mew Mew Kissy Cutie 2 is better than Mew Mew Kissy Cutie 1.
(Which is actually really interesting, and not just in a Your Faves Are Not As You Know Them way. Alphys originally hated Mew Mew 2 because it dropped the hope and kindness and optimism of the original in favor of being 2 Edgy 4 You, but Bad Timeline Alphys loves it because she thinks it's a ~dark adult masterpiece~. So it's potentially commentary on Deltarune as a sequel and its sense of Wrongness and maybe even commentary on the original Halloween Hack)
I was initially really weirded out by the whole Toriel Has Become Catholic thing, but now I think it's another way of cuing us to the Off-ness of this world. In Undertale the monsters had never heard of human religions and holidays, but here the Dreemurrs have been practicing Christians for years (meanwhile Kris just wants the Sick Fruit Juice. Whoever they are I love them)
Speaking of Deltarune as a topsy-turvy opposite-world version of Undertale, it's really interesting that Undertale had multiple endings, but it only gave you one save file, adding to the whole theme of how a meaningful experience can become meaningless if you treat it like it's repeatable and disposable. But Deltarune lets you have 3 save files, and even copy your save file, even though there's only one ending and Your Choices Don't Matter TM
Not only does pacifism being the only option make it less meaningful, but by focusing exclusively on the Fighting Bad angle, the game sidesteps any other ethical issues. It's genuinely fucked up that the Lightners abandoned and imprisoned the Darkners and yet the Darkners can only find fulfillment by helping them, but the heroes don't make any effort to free the Darkners, and the final conflict gets reduced to "the king just needs to stop being mean to the poor Lightners"
That's also one of the reasons I'm lowkey suspicious of ""Ralsei."" He's the one pushing us along on the One Set Path, and then when the Spade King's like "We shouldn't have to worship and obey the Lightners! We should be allowed to find our own purpose!" Ralsei's just like "No!!" and. that's that.
Anyone else concerned that Susie’s like “so sealing this fountain isn’t going to destroy your kingdom or anything, right?” and Lancer’s like “I have no idea! :P” and then we never find out what happened
(Guess it's less of an issue if the Darkners are really just toys in a dark empty storage room, mad that the "Lightners" outside stopped playing with them)
Odd that Susie never goes "huh, this is weirdly similar to the situation in the Underground that we monsters just escaped." Given that, the Toriel Is Now Catholic thing, and Kris being adopted at a young age...is this a universe where the monsters were never sealed underground?
If the Dark World really is real, did the Darkners take the monsters' place?
A lot of the Opposite World differences seem to be directly rooted in the fact that Alphys never became the Royal Scientist (possibly hinting at the ooooo Gaster~ thing)
I love the part where Kris licks the book, but is Toby jossing flavor text theory? Is he winking conspiratorially at it? What does it meannn
"Simple shapes...circle...square...dodecahedron" Chara? Is that you???
I don't actually think this is building to the Most Boring Chara Interpretation (aka: They're an evil serial killer. They've been evil since the tender age of Birth. They were trying to forcibly possess Frisk's body and make them go through with the no mercy run from the very beginning player what player. This suicidal 10-year-old is the one irredeemable Undertale character and the sole exception to Undertale's "everyone has hidden sympathetic depths" rule.) But that ending was stil,,,Bad. Unless it was supposed to feel like cheap dumb creepypasta shock value, in which case it did its job excellently.
"You just have to trust the dog" I'm trying

How real is Kris?
Delta Rune theory 4.0
(Edit: I have ALMOST given up on keeping track of these things, but I decided it would be easier to reference/keep track of these things if I numbered them. So here we are!)
ANYWAY.
So Kris. Who exactly are they? We’re lead to believe that they are Toriel and Asgores kid, and have lived there all their life. But there are some things that don’t add up. Kris ‘instinctively reached out’ to ‘the light only they can see.’ It’s odd that its instinctive to them now, and it’s also odd they comment on only them being able to see it, when there’s no one else around. Beyond that Rasiel will compliment your fighting skills at the start of the game, asking if you’ve ‘done this before.’ In addition. Kris knows to ask Undyne about Alphys, even though in the Delta Rune universe they’ve never interacted, and Kris greets Sans despite the fact they’ve never met. All of this definitely points to Kris knowing what went down in Undertale. But then...who are they? Are they Frisk, coming from a genocide run? I don’t think so, since I’m pretty sure Delta Rune is a spiritual prequal of some sort. Besides, not everyone did genocide, and Toby has stated that UT will stay the same as you left it. So then, is it the players influence? This is a game you’re suppose to play after Undertale. But how much of the player is Kris, if that makes sense. Does Kris have their own feelings and past and emotions, or are they just a vessel for the player?
Well, we are creating a vessel in the beginning of the game. And although it’s destroyed and we’re thrown in Kris’ body by someone (Chara), maybe Kris is still just that: a vessel for the player. Not a real character with a backstory and connections, just a vessel. I have a theory about this that basically says Gaster created this world, but it wasn’t complete without the player. He wrote out the characters and their backstories, but time didn’t start turning until Kris showed up. However, I have another theory that I think makes more sense: Kris did not exist until the player showed up. Kris was created as a vessel for the player and was written into the game after the player entered the game.
For one thing, Kris’ whole existence doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Where are the other humans? Was there a war? Why was Kris spared? If there are no humans, where did Kris come from? For another, Kris not exiting before the player showed up would explain the utter nothingness in their room- they weren’t alive before the player. It would also explain why they seem to have no friends. Finally, if you read the card in Mr. Holidays hospital room, he says something along the lines of “you know you signed that card, right Kris? Why are you looking at it like you’ve never seen it before?”
To me, all of this combined with all the above evidence says this: before the player there was no Kris. There were just monsters. After the player showed up they were given Kris as a vessel, given the name “Kris”, and Kris was then written into the world as a character. All the prior knowlage of Undertale comes from the players influence, not Kris’.
Now, it’s safe to say that Kris does have some concise apart from the player, based on the few times Kris moves. Most of the time Kris goes limp when the player isn’t in control and barley expresses emotions. However from time to time they act in their own, like when they defend Suzy at the end of the game. So it’s safe to save that Kris does have some concise thought, and are aware of what’s going on. They experience everything along with us, they learn along with us, and when the time comes, they break out of our control and move on their own. So while Kris and the player are somewhat seperete, Kris is largely not in control of their body, and Kris never knew anything other than being controlled by the player. This is all they know.
So what does this mean for the end scene? Does Kris get sick of us being in control and decide to get rid of us? We haven’t given them a reason to, they end up friends with former-bully Suzy, they make a ton of new friends, they do not have the choice to kill anyone, so by that logic they should be...alright? So maybe it is Chara at the end? But it definitely could be Kris rebelling against our control.
Dunno, these are just my thoughts. Let me know what you think! And sorry if this didn’t make much sense, I’m tired. I’ll try to edit it in the morning.
