People want to complain about how Nico Parker, a girl who is 75% white, doesn't look white or Scandinavian enough to play Astrid Hofferson, yet they're suspiciously quiet on the fact that all of the adults have Scottish accents, the kids have American accents and Hiccup himself is voiced by a Canadian. "she's supposed to be Danish/from Scandinavia/Norway!" - okay, why do none of them have those accents then?

"But she's blonde with blue eyes!" - 1) wigs, hair dye and contact lenses exist. 2) Astrid being blonde really doesn't matter to the story, it's not like the story of Hiccup training dragons revolves around Astrid being blonde for God's sake. 3) Not all of the vikings were blonde? Even just in the film alone, you had brunettes living on Berk, Snotlout had dark hair, Stoick had red hair, Hiccup's was an auburn colour...

This isn't about people saying we don't need a remake - I agree we don't. I'm vehemently against the remake in every single way. This is about the people singling out Nico specifically, because they are literally doing it just based on her skin colour, which is ridiculous because as I said she's 75% white and can literally pass as white - but because most pictures show her with her natural hair (eg. in Dumbo, with her hair straight, I'm pretty sure 90% of the audience didn't realise she wasn't completely white) they've latched onto this idea that Hollywood is "blackwashing" and "discriminating" against white blonde people, which is ridiculous (and I say that as a naturally blonde pale white person with blue eyes).

(Side note, this is not me ragging on her hair at all, the fact she and her mother have said that she's learnt to embrace her natural hair is fucking amazing, love that for them, 10/10, if they let Nico have her natural hair in the film I honestly wouldn't be that mad)

Anyway, I'm willing to bet that America Ferrera (Astrid's original voice actress who, by the way, is Latina) is somewhere secretly rooting for Nico and happy to share this character with her.

I hate how people will look at popular indie artists who had one or two songs go viral on TikTok and start making fun of anybody who listens to them. I never used to leave comments but since I got into the habit of commenting on everything i enjoy it's been incredible. Especially when the author gets back to me about it and we get to have a discussion of what other ideas they had. One writer replied to my comment with a 5 paragraph essay detailing the Floorplan of the building the characters lived in and it was incredible

Anyways this is all to say that if you find a fic that just makes you want to scream from the rooftops, leave a comment saying that to the author and maybe they will join you and you can scream incoherently together
