I recorded an audiobook version of "The Solutions Are Already Here" by Peter Gelderloos HELLA STRONG RECOMMEND. There's solid takes from folks fighting thru some of the gnarliest catastrophe's on the planet. Good measures of what makes an enemy and an accomplice - what r fake fixes and what r the actual moves people are making to stem the destruction. it's Neat!

With respect, I understand that the freezing potential may have prompted some urgency in fixing a problem that went on long enough to become a goldfish pond. However, if that were all that was going on here, there wouldn't be a problem with drawing a fish in the concrete.

We don't like community-led solutions. You're supposed to wait for someone with the authority to come and fix it "right." Even if the concrete crumbles and the hydrant keeps leaking and freezes and bursts anyway. Even if the fish don't do any better when placed in a bucket in some guy's office. You already know how that works. The community might protest, but no matter what they do, it's less valid than the government's response - which, at the moment, is, "no more fish pond for you, maybe we'll give you some kind of fish-thing later."

At the very least, in order to fill the same needs, any replacement must be community-maintained, community-controlled, open late nights, and accessible - and the hydrant needs to work. I'd be thrilled if they got that, and I don't think there'd be much complaining in Bed-Stuy.

...But I'm not gonna hold my breath and neither are they. The point is, people can't be allowed to do things like this, and that's already been accomplished. For now.

Salute to all flowers that grow in sidewalk cracks, whether they're supposed to or not, with hope for further stubborn resistance in the future. Entropy's a thing, this is just for right now and it's all gonna crumble anyway, so we might as well find the beauty in it when we can.

Petition for Anti- pollution
