on the left: not read yet. Latin American Folktales - John Bierhorst African American Folktales - Roger D. Abrahams Aradia or The Gospel of the Witches - Charles Godfrey Leland Spirits Rebellious - Kahlil Gibran Ivan Doig - The Whistling Season on the right: read it and liked it Sourdough - Robin Sloan (very cute, made me smile) Poet in New York - Federico García Lorca (it’s got the originals and the translations. I’ve read the English versions multiple times but at the moment I’m using the Spanish ones to practice my own translation skills. Here’s a tip: poetry is a goddamn nightmare to translate as an amateur) Good Omens - Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman (this is my millionth reread, but I was waiting for other books to arrive and honestly, I can always reread anything Pratchett) Welcome to Night Vale - Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor (I feel like perhaps it would’ve benefitted from being a shorter story, it felt a bit stretched out in places but I love Night Vale and I love seeing more of the world. I’d probably recommend getting this as an audiobook instead - I’m listening to the second Night Vale novel, It Devours, as an audiobook right now and it feels much more part of the universe when Cecil Baldwin is the one reading it to you. Would also recommend It Devours if you’re already a fan of the podcast and you want to quietly and gleefully gather evidence for autistic headcanons as I do. Have now confirmed that I would die for Carlos the Scientist.) Kitchens of the Great Midwest - J. Ryan Stradal (I think this was a one read and done rather than a rereader, but it was enjoyable to get through.)

Less - Andrew Sean Greer (I loved this, and I say that as someone who doesn’t have much patience for books about writers, but this one absolutely knows why people often don’t like books about writers and deals with it in a funny way. Also just very good as a book about being gay into your middle/old age.)

What If It’s Us - Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera (Fun, sweet gay YA romance. I think that it skewed too young for me since the characters are around 16 - I enjoyed it but it didn’t like, grab my heart the way it would’ve ten years ago, even though a gay ADHD main character who obsesses over Hamilton is absolutely my jam. Would still very much recommend it though.)

Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien (I have read this book so many goddamn times and it never gets old. I forgot that it’s got such a good sense of humour, though - high fantasy can often be so self-serious and I think people assume Tolkien is but I find him hilarious)

The Prophet - Kahlil Gibran (another old favourite, prose-poetry and very quick to get through but has some of the most moving, insightful writing about life Ive ever read.)

IT HAS BEEN about a year now since my involvement with the Dozier School For Boys began taking over my world. Kicking off the whirlwind was my need to get my hands on the school’s student ledgers. I won’t rehash the entire adventure but what I will say is that it took many frustrating nights online, several emails to the Archivist, the potential of an $600+ bill to get digital copies & finally an 8 hour round trip before I’d actually have what I wanted…Well at least a quarter of what I wanted!

HAVING ABSOLUTELY NO clue what I was looking for, I spent the next several weeks trying to organize what I had. Almost immediately number of very distinct patterns began jumping out at me. The same sentencing judges over & over again, the SAME sentence length OR lack there of & a crap load of blank spaces; Specifically under the “WHEN/HOW RELEASED” columns. One would expect that any institution handling children would be required to keep detailed & accurate records of ALL of its charges, especially when it comes to their last known whereabouts BUT that would make too much sense, now wouldn’t it…

THE INFO THAT I had gotten was only from the latest volume of the ledgers & didn’t even make a dent in the number of boys that had been shoved through the doors to be reformed. I knew there were hundreds OR even thousands of names in those books. I maybe had a few hundred at the most. By now, I had gotten used to what I like to call the “Hurry Up & Stop” method of researching. Basically I’d need specific info, finally get said info ONLY to start looking it over & promptly figure out that I needed additional material OR even worse, I’d need something entirely different altogether. In this case, I had just assumed that I’d eventually be making another trip to the Archives; That is until I ended up becoming involved with Bob Straley & taking over his website…And right there on one of the site pages was a link to the detailed, handwritten notes that WHB Mr. Andrew Puel had spent hours putting together.

NOT IT!!

WHEN I SAW that link, I was beyond thrilled! I was finally going to have something reliable to validate what I had come up with! I had spoken with Andrew at Bob Straley’s memorial service & knew that any research he had done would be the best & most accurate info that I could possibly get. When the page loaded, it definitely did NOT show what I had been hoping for; In all actuality, it showed nothing but this:

ODDLY THE INFO was missing! I started clicking on some of the other older links on the website & sure enough, there were quite a few that led to nowhere. I don’t know why it gone OR where it went, only that it’s not there. I tried not to get to aggravated, thinking that there had to be a hard copy among the thousands of documents that I have. I spent the next several weeks going through EVERY page, folder, digital file, etc. & found nothing. Bob kept everything, so to say I was puzzled that he wouldn’t have a copy of something so important was a huge understatement. I did another look through, literally taking out every piece of paper, one by one; Still nothing.

Well Damn….

AN EVENING IN GAINESVILLE

ON A FRIDAY in late February, I made the 3 hour trip to Gaineville. With me was a small black bag filled with what I believed to be the most important material related to the Arthur G Dozier School for Boys. I pulled up to a beautiful home, tucked back in a quiet sub division that was surrounded by forest. Standing outside was a familiar face, Mr. Bryant Middleton. The “Whitehouse Boy” greeted me with a smile & a brief hug before inviting me inside to meet his wife. Both graciously spent several hours telling their personal story of Dozier & how the WHB’s Organization was founded. They were both lovely people & I was grateful that they had been so willing to meet with me & be as open as they were. When we finally moved into the dining room to look over the things that I had brought, I began pulling things out. I yanked a folder out that had been wedged inside of my over full bag & a stack of papers fell out. The stack was stapled together & folded in half. I picked it up to see what it was & as I unfolded it, my jaw hit the floor!

OH…MY…GOD…It was a hard copy of the list of missing boys! The same list that I had just spent weeks trying to find! The stuff inside of that bag was the stuff that I pulled out & reviewed quite frequently & there’s absolutely NO way that I would missed that thick stack of ledger pages! I slid the stack across the table, explaining to Bryant why I was a bit stunned at finding them. He thought it was strange as well. I’m not going to get into the specifics of my time with the Middletons in this post, although I will say that I’m very fortunate to have met with them. They’re great people & they continue to work toward keeping the future from repeating the past.

WHERE COULD THEY BE?

OF COURSE THERE is minimal info on the boys on this list. What is known is that most were listed as escaped but never recovered. A lot lacked permanent homes OR guardians, so there wouldn’t have been any concerned parents wondering about the whereabouts of their lost boy. It should also be noted that the last place they were seen was the Dozier School for Boys in Marianna. That leaves so many unanswered questions; Could ALL 185 boys on that list have actually successfully escaped & moved on to a better life? Even if that did happen, would it be possible that NOT 1 single child ever be heard from again? I suppose it could be possible for some BUT for All 185? I seriously have my doubts & given the history of Dozier, I’d say that’s highly unlikely. Especially considering the significant proof of other burial sites on the school’s 1200+ acres.Whether or not they continued life after Dozier OR their lives were taken at the school, they each deserve to be recognized. I’ll let them speak for themselves….

Cruz rallies support for Air Force colonel targeted for Christian beliefs

This week, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) sent a letter to Heather Wilson, Secretary of the Air Force, urging her to come to the defense of Col. Leland Bohannon, who was heavily sanctioned for exercising his religious beliefs. The letter is also signed by Sens. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), James Inhofe (R-Okla.), John Kennedy (R-La.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Roger F. Wicker (R-Miss.).

“Our country was founded by people who risked everything for freedom,” Sen. Cruz said. “The American military embodies this heritage, and they shouldn’t have to surrender their fundamental religious liberties to do it. Col. Bohannon did exactly what we expect our heroes to do: he found a smart solution, under pressure, that balanced his religious liberties with the honor that was due the service member. He deserves to be lauded for his quick, compassionate thinking—not threatened with a potentially career-ending action.”

Dear Secretary Wilson:

For more than seventy years, the United States Air Force has defended the free skies, capturing both the imagination and the respect of the public. President Trump had it right when he remarked recently at Joint Base Andrews that U.S Airmen, like the members of their sister services, “have no equal in courage, capability, or commitment.” The brave men and women who crew the heavens have pushed the limits of what we thought possible time and time again. In doing so, they have sacrificed much for their country.

We write to you today because while these men and women gladly give so much of themselves in service to this nation, there are some fundamental rights—such as the right to practice and live in accordance with one’s faith—which we cannot take from them.

Colonel Leland B.H. Bohannon is a highly decorated and experienced combat pilot. In May 2017, while stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, a non-commissioned officer under his command was set to retire. As is the custom, several certificates and awards were prepared in advance of the retirement ceremony for Col. Bohannon to sign. Col. Bohannon proceeded to endorse each of them—except for a certificate of spouse appreciation, which he felt would cause him to affirm a definition of marriage contrary to his sincerely held religious beliefs.

Col. Bohannon recognized the moral and legal dilemma this situation presented and, to his credit, sought to carve out a solution that would affirm the contribution made by the retiring officer’s same-sex partner while at the same time allowing the colonel to abide by his religious convictions. Col. Bohannon submitted a formal request for a religious accommodation. While this request was pending, Major General Sami Said—an officer two ranks higher than Col. Bohannon—signed the certificate in his place. The retiring service member nonetheless took offense at Col. Bohannon’s beliefs and the compromise that had been arranged. The service member therefore filed a formal Equal Opportunity (EO) complaint, which an EO investigator then deemed substantiated. As a result, Col. Bohannon now faces a potentially career-ending action.

The EO investigator’s decision to rule against Col. Bohannon runs afoul of this country’s most foundational tenet— for “[i]f there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion, or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein.” West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624, 642 (1943). Indeed, what separates the United States from its forebears is the recognition that truth preexists government, and that it is incumbent on human dignity for each and every one of us to have the inalienable right to discover that truth in our own time and in our own way.

This star, which the U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed repeatedly, shines over all federal policy. It guides every department, controls every official, and stays the hand of every investigation, including in the U.S. military. In fact, the Department of Defense already lays out how this principle should be implemented. Department of Defense Instruction (DODI) 1300.17 explicitly decrees that “Military Departments will accommodate individual expressions of sincerely held religious beliefs of Service members” (emphasis added). The DODI, of course, provides for limited exceptions for when the accommodation could adversely affect “military readiness,” “unit cohesion,” and “good order and discipline,” but the overall thrust of the document reinforces the synergy between one’s duty to God and the duty one owes to one’s country.

During your own confirmation process, you made it a point to acknowledge that “Air Force commanders have a responsibility to ensure that the spiritual needs of all Airmen are met.” You stated clearly that the Air Force “must continue to ensure that all Airmen are able to choose to practice their particular religion or” as the case may be “subscribe to no religious beliefs at all.” We were highly encouraged by your answers and trusted that, when the time came, you would follow through.

That time is now. Col. Bohannon’s actions fall cleanly within the contours of DODI 1300.17, as well as the broader promise articulated by the First Amendment, the U.S. Supreme Court, and your written testimony to Congress. The retiring non-commissioned officer had no legal right to the certificate. The relevant Air Force Instruction, additionally, contains no requirement that the commander personally sign the certificate in the event one is issued. The certificate is an elective recognition, which, despite his strong religious objection, Col. Bohannon nevertheless ensured would be received by the officer’s same-sex partner.

Col. Bohannon, in other words, acted reasonably and with great compassion. He exercised all due diligence to identify the rights, needs, and obligations of all parties involved. He then sought appropriate advice on how to best resolve a very difficult and fraught set of circumstances in the absence of formal Air Force guidance. He should be applauded for finding an equitable solution that honored the retiring officer’s partner while allowing Col. Bohannon to stay true to his religious conviction that marriage is between one man and one woman. The Air Force’s refusal to accept this compromise and its refusal to grant an accommodation—when doing so would cause no discernable harm—raises the question as to which circumstances, if any, would move the U.S. Air Force to defend the free exercise rights of its soldiers.

We therefore ask that you, as Secretary of the Air Force, clarify the branch’s position on religious liberty. We ask that you instruct the Air Force to issue formal guidance and provide adequate training to commanders so that they know how to properly and respectfully address the religious liberty rights of their subordinates. Lastly, we request that you investigate the proceedings surrounding Col. Bohannon’s request for a religious accommodation and take all appropriate steps to have the substantiated EO complaint reversed and any unfavorable note in Col. Bohannon’s service record removed.

Col. Bohannon has suffered severely on account of the EO investigator’s mishandling of his religious liberty rights. The Air Force owes it to him to see that justice is restored, along with his good name. We should not ask him and other airmen to risk their lives only to be denied at home the very rights they championed and bled for abroad.
