Uno de los principales problemas de Android es la fragmentación. Como las actualizaciones dependen de los fabricantes, las nuevas versiones no llegan tan rápido como nos gustaría, pero gracias a los esfuerzos de Google y OEM la fragmentación ya no es tan grave como en los primeros años de Android.

Hace dos años Google atacó la fragmentación con Project Treble, diviendo la capa del sistema operativo de la capa de controladores. Así un fabricante podría actualizar la capa del sistema operativo sin depender de que los fabricantes de los componentes actualicen los driver a la nueva versión. Este cambio ha acelerado las actualizaciones.

Adopción de Android 10

Desde el primer año, Project Treble ha sido un éxito. Este esfuerzo aceleró la adopción de Android Pie por 2.5X, y con Android 10 un aumento adicional de 1.5X. Google informa que la adopción de Android 10 ha sido más rápida que cualquier versión anterior. Android 10 se ejecutaba en 100 millones de dispositivos cinco meses después de su lanzamiento, un 28% más rápido que Android Pie.

Actualizaciones en Android 11

Para intentar acelerar todavía más las actualizaciones de Android y minimizar la fragmentación Google anuncia nuevas estrategias en Android 11:

Vistas previas de desarrolladores OEM: Los fabricantes tienen acceso a las vistas previas de Android 11 para ir adelantando la actualización de sus dispositivos antes de su lanzamiento oficial.

Actualización del sistema Google Play: En Android 11, 21 componentes del sistema operativo ahora son actualizables, nueve más que en Android 10 que están enfocados en mejorar la privacidad, la seguridad y la consistencia del desarrollador en todos los dispositivos. Los nuevos componentes actualizables son: Tethering, NNAPI, Cell Broadcast Receiver, adbd, Internet Key Exchange, Media Provider, statsd, WiFi y SDK extension.

Imagen genérica del kernel: En Android 11, Google está aislando aún más el código común en el kernel de Android Linux para crear una imagen de kernel genérico (GKI) que funcione en todos los dispositivos Android. Así permitirán actualizaciones e implementaciones de seguridad más rápidas.

Virtual A/B: En las últimas versiones de Android llegaron las OTA A/B, más conocidas como Seamless Updates o Actualizaciones sin interrupciones. El sistema operativo se reserva el doble de memoria del sistema para tener en una partición el sistema actual y en otra partición otra versión que se actualiza en segundo plano. Luego tras reiniciar el dispositivo la partición actualizada pasa a ser la versión actual. Así se evitan las largas esperas de actualización en el que el móvil puede estar varios minutos sin poder usarse.

Esa duplicidad de la cantidad de almacenamiento reservado para el sistema operativo ha limitando la adopción entre los OEM, con lo que Google lanzará en Android 11 el nuevo mecanismo Virtual A/B que evita esa reserva del doble de espacio para el sistema al crear en el momento de la actualización una partición virtual. Así los móviles podrán tener actualizaciones sin interrupciones sin perder almacenamiento.

Google agradece a todos sus socios OEM por sus esfuerzos para implementar las actualizaciones de las nuevas versiones de Android cada vez más pronto. LG G7 ThinQ Starts Receiving New Update With Wi-Fi Calling Support in India

LG G7 ThinQ is getting a new software update in India that brings Wi-Fi calling support to the phone. Apart from the Wi-Fi calling feature, the update also includes March 2020 Android security patch along with other phone functionality improvements. LG is pushing the update over-the-air (OTA) with the firmware V20n-MAR-10-2020. To recall, the LG G7 ThinQ was launched in 2018 with Android 8 Oreo and has received the Android 9 Pie update but, the latest system update does not upgrade it to Android 10 operating system.

Moreover, the system update is 670.05MB in size and LG G7 ThinQ users will automatically be notified when the OTA update is ready on their phones. The users can also check for the update manually by heading to Settings > System > Update centre.

LG G7 ThinQ users in India are getting Wi-Fi calling support with new update

As mentioned earlier, LG has added Wi-Fi calling functionality for LG G7 ThinQ users in India with the latest system update that carries the build number PKQ1.181105.001. However, the Wi-Fi calling support will only work for users with Airtel or Reliance Jio connections. Recently, another LG model, LG V40 ThinQ also reportedly received a new system update that included Wi-Fi calling support.

To recall, LG G7 ThinQ was launched in 2018 and features a 6.1-inch QHD+ (1,440×3,120 pixels) display. The phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, coupled with 4GB RAM. Additionally, the phone has a single 16-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel camera for selfies and video calling. The phone packs a 3,000mAh battery.

Earlier in January, LG Italy had announced that LG G7 ThinQ will be receiving the Android 10 update in the third quarter of 2020. But since the roadmap came from LG Italy, it was not clear whether the roadmap is valid for other countries. Nonetheless, this still gives an idea when LG might rollout Android 10 updates in India.
