any art tips about writing funny scenarios? i feel like i understand drawing but ive been in a total writing rut, especially when it comes to comedy :/

I think the main thing to consider is What Is The Punchline.

Something I see often in beginner joke-writing is having too much after the punchline. You don't need to have character A dunk on character B, and then have characters C, D, & E all reacting to it. UNLESS the reaction is the punchline. Remember how funny vines were? A lot of that came from them being only 6 seconds, and often cut off at the end. The Abruptness can absolutely add to the timing.

The other main thing is that comedy = contrast. Yesterday was April Fool's Day, and something I was seeing a lot of people do (myself included) was make some kind of "announcement", and then say some variation of "haha sike!" The thing is, this only works if your audience could have realistically expected you to make that kind of announcement in the first place. If an artist who has been staunchly and vocally against AI art posts an AI image, then... that's not really a joke? Your followers will be confused, not only because you're acting out-of-character about an issue that's politically charged, but also because you're still using AI art.

My own version of this joke was to redraw an old comic, which is something I love doing! I love revisiting old media I used to like, and I love redrawing art to track my improvement. My followers (hopefully) know this about me. The twist was that the comic I redrew was voltron, specifically klance, because I have the experience to know this would give a lot of people a lot of whiplash. Even after almost 9 years, just simply seeing the characters was enough to send people careening into a weird spiral of nostalgia and fear for my sanity, because of how controversial the show and its fanbase had become. But since most of the controversy was because of extremely-online drama, it was ultimately harmless (and people that are genuinely still into the show got some new art for it teehee!) I'm going to use a recent comic I did as a another example.

^ this is a comic about Ace Attorney, but honestly you don't really need to know anything about Ace Attorney except that "7yg" is a shorthand the fandom used for "7 year gap".

Panel 1: Setting the expectation. it's during the pandemic, so it's normal for people to have hand sanitizer on them. A precedence has been established.

Panel 2: Additional Context. Phoenix rummages through his pockets, which tells the audience he has a lot of stuff in them, and that he's identifying objects more by touch than by sight.

Panel 3: Anticipation

Panel 4: The punchline! Oops, it was lube! Small bottles of lube DO look & feel very similar to bottles of hand sanitizer, but people-- especially during a global pandemic-- do not typically carry small bottles of lube on them. Personally, I think Phoenix Wright could be the kind of person to have lube on him (for any number of sexual or non-sexual reasons), but the audience doesn't necessarily need to know that about him. Part of the joke is the nonchalance in his reaction; all you need to know is that Phoenix himself is not that surprised or embarrassed about having lube with him, or about having just dispensed some of it into his friend's hands.

Comedy is hard to explain!! It's also not very funny to explain. It really takes a lot of practice, and everyone has different tastes in humor/context/expectations anyway, so you're never going to make everyone laugh. Knowing your audience will definitely help.

And now we are finally getting to the most recent stuff I've worked on, starting off with my 2025 Marisa redraw! This time I'll actually have some more stuff to say since I can remember my thought process while drawing this yipeeee- (click image for better quality)

Artist's Notes;

So ever since doing these redraws, I've always kinda mourned the loss of the second redraw's dramatic lighting, so I decided to finally bring it back for this one! This one is kind of the melding of a bunch of my favourite aspects of the precious redraws, plus some of the newer stuff I've learned ever sine making them. I also tried out a new style of rendering hair for this piece and I'm really happy with how it looks! Also if you guys are wondering, yes that it s the same lantern from the previous Marisa drawing I did, I copy and pasted it because I was lazy and I just needed it to look consistent, work smarter not harder folks.

So I've been returning to my old favourite brush, the Clip Studio Paint Default Oil Paint brush for this one, and I did a bunch of the rendering for this piece with minimal blending. For the clothing, I wanted to incorperate a technique I did a few years ago, where I added some subsurface scattering to make the lighting feel more dynamic, and I love the effect it gave the white parts of the clothes. For the hair rendering, I did one base layer of shadows on top of my base colour for the hair, then a sort of mid-tone underneath it to add some variety in colour, and then did my highlights underneath all of that. I focused less on rendering every single strand of hair and moreso focused on getting the general shapes down, since I got inspired by some art I saw on Pinterest with a similar rendering style.

Once I finished with the base rendering, I used a multiply layer to create some more prominent shadows and also to give the lighting more direction. I did this with another piece as well and I think it gives me some pretty good results. It helps make the shadows a lot clearer and also gives me some better lighting while also allowing me to do some rendering to flesh it out even further, it's the best of both worlds and I have a lot of fun doing it. Also, what helped me a lot in the compositional stage was making a shitty little stick figure version of the character in the pose that I wanted and then painting in the base pose like a mannequin. I find that just painting in the figure immediately instead of forcing myself to stick to a rigid sketch has helped me out a lot, and here's an example of how the process went below. Later on in the drawing I did flip my canvas and after fixing it, realized that I liked it better flipped so that's why the orientation is slightly different. It also helps to just to some quick linework distinguishing the body parts to it's easier for me to draw the clothes. I do often keep major features of the silhouette in tact during this phase though so I don't forget to include them.

The background was actually pretty fun since it's just a nice outdoors scene. I didn't want there to be too much detail since I am all for creating the illusion of detail than rendering everything in immaculate detail, though I do think I could do just a little bit better, but hey that's why I've mainly been drawing backgrounds nowadays lol.

Overall, I'm really proud of this piece and I had a lot of fun making it. I want to continue experimenting with backgrounds and how to incorporate characters into them, so after my hibernation period you guys can expect to see some more of that.

You being chaotic is probably what attracted him to you.

And by attracted I mean made him follow you around for months like a puppy.

Like, he’s a little crazy, you’re crazy, match made in heaven.

Will try to impress you by doing really crazy stuff like attempting to rocket jump off a building, but it’ll just end up with you needing to help him to the infirmary.

One time you were crawling around in the vents, saw him, and decided to jump down onto him as a surprise…

You’re now sworn to secrecy about how high hitched his scream is

Pyro

You thought Scout was attached to your hip? Well, meet your new hip.

LOVES how chaotic you are. Often gets into mischief with you, with ends up with both of you being scolded by Engi for how careless you two were being.

In one ear out the other though for both of you :3

Kind of person where if they see you doing something they know you’re not supposed to, they stand look out for you

Loves how much energy you have.

Favourite thing to do with you is set stuff on fire (Of course)

One time you found a shopping cart, built a ramp, and rode down in the shopping cart, only to miss the ramp and go straight through a wall in the base

In this continuing theme of me now avoiding working on this bigger project, I remembered a year old thing I never finished.

“Hey. You, like, need a hug or somethin’?”

You reluctantly shift from your position in bed upon hearing the sound of her voice. You roll over just enough to see the source of it, only noticing the vast shadow cast upon you as you do.

“C’mon, dude. You’ve been laying there forever.”

Towering above you is a plush wolf, and boy is she huge. Half of her face is obscured by her flowing, deep blue hair, but her worried look is as clear as day. Dark, pointed ears pierce through her unkempt mane, flicking on occasion. As wildly voluminous as her hair is, there’s a certain smoothness to it as it flows down to her hips. Her legs are quite stocky, much like her arms, and a network of seams line her joints. You lift your face from your pillow for only a moment, hiding it once more the moment your gaze lands on her face.

Her question comes across as genuine worry under a veil of less than tactful wording… which is Lupa in a nutshell, when you come to think of it. She’s always been this way, a sheep in wolf’s clothing. You remember when you had first bought her from a yard sale. You didn’t know she was a nearly nine-foot-tall wolf at the time, since she had taken the form of a mostly normal looking, six-inch-tall plush. You can still remember the fright you had that first night.

But that’s getting away from the point. With her large plastic teeth, her claws, and that spiked collar she always wore, Lupa liked to look tough. She liked to act tough too. You recall the times she barked at you in an attempt to scare you, laughed at your expense, and the times she called you a ‘dork’. But as you had quickly found out, under that exterior, she was as soft as the material she was made of. Plushies were made for tenderness after all, and Lupa was no exception.

“Ugh. Look, dude. I’m not leaving until you tell me what’s wrong.”

Even if she wasn’t the best at expressing herself.

“Then you can stay there for all I care,” is what comes out, and those words immediately taste bitter in your mouth. You hear some shuffling, then a very quiet reply.

“I’m sorry.”

“Wait!” You dart upright, holding your hand out towards her. You had fully expected her to leave, but she was still there. Her shoulders were sagging now, and she rubs one of her arms with a paw. Her sharp, tall ears had lowered, and her tail was curled partly between her legs. She was avoiding your gaze now, which caused a flash of heat to run across your body. Self-consciousness. Embarrassment. You didn’t really want to talk about it – the thing that was making you upset. But at the same time, you felt like you owed her an explanation now. “Lupa, I…”

You decided to settle for an “I’m sorry,” for now.

“Ha. It’s okay. It’s, uh… It’s whatever.” She waves her paw dismissively.

“No, really, it’s—I’ve just… I haven’t been feeling… great, and—"

“Look. I get it,” she firmly doesn’t let you finish, slowly approaching. Her footfalls are heavy, but dampened by the soft material her feet were made of. Your bed creaks as she sits down with a grunt. “You’re, like… depressed, right?”

You wouldn’t put it that way.

You wouldn’t say you’re depressed, just… not feeling it, is all. Sure, something was bothering you, but couldn’t that be said by anyone? What you were going through, it wasn’t a big deal. You’ll live. Surely.

“Do you wanna talk about it?” you hear her ask. You didn’t realize you were even grabbing your pillow, but the question makes you clutch it even harder. She must have noticed, because her response comes quickly.

“Okay, okay, fine. We could always do something else, y’know,” she says with an air of indignance. You could hear the gentle rustle of soft material as she crosses her arms, “Like… Like—"

“Like what? Snuggle?” You cut in, shooting her a wry, knowing grin. One that causes Lupa to blanch.

“Uh-- Y-You don’t have to just-- just say it!” Despite everything, you can’t help but chuckle. She was so easy to read sometimes.

“Lupa, I know you,” You continue, “You like snuggling. You love it. I keep telling you that you don’t have to pretend around me,” you say as you lay back down. “I’m not going to judge you.” Out of the corner of your eye, you could see her fur begin to bristle.

“…Whatever. I’m supposed to be the one givin’ you advice right now, dude.”

B-Besides. It wasn’t like you wanted to snuggle or anything. You were doing just fine here, lying in bed and doing nothing in particular.

In fact, you only shrug, offering a noncommittal hum in response and letting your gaze drift up towards the ceiling. It’s an off-white, with just the slightest bit of paint peel. Just as you get acquainted with what you swear might be a water stain, you feel your entire bed creak and lean to one side. You hardly feel like doing anything to react. Lupa was a heavy girl. With hips like hers, it wasn’t exactly a surprise. It just came with the territory of being so big. What you don’t expect is a pair of arms that wrap around you, pulling you up towards a fluffy, fuzzy chest.

Lupa’s fur is warm, and so, so soft to the touch. You weren’t sure whether it was due to the same magic that made her like, well, This, but you weren’t sure if you cared either way. You feel you don’t get to appreciate it often enough as is. Beneath her thick grey and off-white fur is a hefty bosom. Pushing your face against it a little, you note that it feels like memory foam beneath all that fluff. It was squishy, but not too soft. Firm, but with just the right amount of give. Her paws gently caress you, each one at least as big as your entire face. A set of velvety pawpads glides against your cheek, giving you a good idea for how big the wolf’s paws really are. Her palm was like a pillow on its own. Without thinking, you decide to grab it.

It takes both of your hands to hold her paw properly, and you can’t help but marvel at its size and texture. Running your thumbs along her palm, watching the imprints that they leave in that shiny dark blue silk. Next, you squeeze one of her fingers. Her digits are thick and clumsy, not to mention fuzzy. They were like the halfway point between a hand and a simple wolf’s paw. As you squeeze, you find that there’s no bone to stop you. Despite the joints she clearly had, it was like you were squeezing any other stuffed animal. You’d almost find it weird if it weren’t forBwmnmffhh--…

Your thoughts completely derail as she pushes that paw right into your face, turning your world dark as you get a face full of pillowy softness. You want to push it away, but… It’s oddly therapeutic… She’s just holding her paw there, and you soon find that you’re the one trying to bring it closer, gently keeping your face pushed against it. The more you held it against you, the more you felt yourself unwind. You felt like you could just, scream all your feelings into it. But, all that comes out is a weak groan. You vent your latent frustration into it, murmuring as you stick your face in that tufted, furry space between her palm and her stubby digits.

“Mmm.~ What was it you said before?” You could hear her voice, muffled as it was. “I love snuggling?” Her teasing leaves you a little red in the face. It doesn’t help that she starts to move her stitched digits. Those pads squish against your skin as she gently squeezes your face. A part of you wanted to prove her wrong, to tell her this was something she wanted to do but oh my god this feels so good. You run your fingers along her arm and wiggle your head, nuzzling into the seemingly endless depths of her paw.

“Daww ~ I know that look,” you hear her say, clarity edging into her voice, “That sound too. I think I get it now. You’ve been stressed, huh? How long’s it been since you’ve relaxed?”

You don’t have an answer for that.

Light returns to you as she gently pulls her paw away. You almost wish she hadn’t done that, but your body relaxes even more as she starts to nuzzle against the top of your head.

“You’ve been staying up all night too, haven’t you? I could see it in your eyes…”

With a surprising amount of casual strength, she adjusts your position in this shared embrace. Rotating you so your face can be nestled up in a warm space beneath her chin, impossibly soft fur tickling your nose. The handle of her zipper quietly clanks as she guides you along.

“You haven’t been panicking about work again, have you?” Since when had her voice gotten so soft? A caring, almost motherly smoothness replaces the gruffer, meaner tone she had before.

Even still, you find that you can’t help but reply, “Maybe a little.”

“Guessin’ things have been pretty busy then, huh?”

Your mind runs through scenario after scenario as you consider your answer. Looming deadlines, filling slots for absent co-workers, a presentation for your boss that you have to complete by Monday. You’re paralyzed. You can’t respond.

“I… I, um…” Oh god, you should get up. How much time have you wasted laying here?

But she doesn’t let go. As soft as Lupa is, her grip is inescapable. It was a little scary how easily she could outright carry you. You forget that sometimes.

Instead, “Shhhh…~” she shushes you. Instead, both of her paws go to your head now. They gently angle you so you’re looking her right in the eye. You get to see the off-white fur that covers her face, her bushy brows furled in a look of genuine care and concern. She has just a hint of a pouty, black lip. So soft, so plump. On the side of her face that’s covered by her thick, blue locks, you see just a tiny bit of beige.

“You’re with me, now,” she says, “It’s okay. You’re okay. You deserve a chance to rest.”

You feel something snake up behind you, causing you to shudder as it slips against your body. The tip of it curls against the back of your head, before snaking around the back of your neck. What is that?

Turning around, you come face to face with the biggest darned tail you’d ever seen. The top half of it is the same dark grey that coats Lupa’s back. The bottom half, the part facing you, is an inviting tint of white – the same white that coats her face, her chest, and her pudgy tummy. The tail’s end flicks your nose, nearly causing you to sneeze.

“I think it wants you to huuug iiit.~” She teases, stifling a giggle. “Go ahead, I don’t think it’s taking no for an answer.”

You glance up at her, and she’s got just the widest grin on her face. Those big, sharp teeth would unnerve you if you didn’t know how much of a big softie she was, figuratively and literally. The wolf’s smile is contagious, and you can’t help but oblige her. With a pwoomff, that tail is easily squeezed between your arms. It is so warm. Long, synthetic fibers squish against you as you hug it tighter and tighter, squeezing out the last memories of your frustrating day. At one point, her head rests on your shoulder, her hair obscuring your vision as she leans against you, resting a tufted cheek against your own.  

“Feeling better?” She asks quietly.

“Mmm,” is all you can say in return. She was so comfy. You were fighting the urge to fall sleep…

“Yes? Nooo? Come ooo~on.~” She goads. The sound of her voice so close to your ear gives you a weird feeling. A feeling that’s immediately overshadowed by the sensation of—her lips against your cheek??

“H,Hey! What are you doing?” You blurt out, rolling over and putting your hands to her chest. You don’t exactly push her away, but… She looks you in the eye, considering her words for a moment.

“…You told me that I didn’t have to pretend,” she simply replies. Seeing your blank stare causes her expression to wilt a little, spurring her to continue, “I, kinda like you. I think you’re… cool. M-Maybe I got ahead of myself but— I like… being with you, helping you feel better. …Holding you.” You notice she gets a lot quieter at the end.

You keep staring.

“Wh,What do you want me to say? That you were right? That I love getting to, y’know… Ugh. Y-You know… ‘Ooh, ahh, cuddling you makes me feel all nice and gooey inside!’ Is that it?”

“Are you… saying you love me?”

“I don’t know! No? Maybe. I just, want to make sure you’re alright, dude. It’s the least I could do, right? After what you’ve done for me? I’m… I feel… protective, of you. Look, I’m sorry about the kiss. I should’a asked you first. I just… like you a lot, okay?”

It takes you a moment to consider her words and to take it all in. She wasn’t usually this sentimental. You watch as she fidgets with her paw, lifting it up to her bangs, to that beige spot. It was a literal eyepatch, with a heart embroidered in the center. The one you made for her the day you bought her.

…You start to get it now.

“Well, I… like you a lot too, Lupa”, is what you eventually offer with an awkward grin. Lupa stares down at you, before breaking into a snicker. Then a laugh.

“Oh my god, I’m bad at this, aren’t I?”

“No, no…” You sigh, resting your head against her chest once more, closing your eyes. “Personally? I’d say you’re pretty good.” You could feel her fur begin to bristle as your plushie’s emotions begin to rise. Just beyond her, at the edge of your bed, you could hear a repeated thump, thump, thump.

“Is that your tail?”

“No!” she blurts out all too quickly. “Well—…" You open an eye, giving her a discerning stare. You could clearly see it swish through the air, thumping against the side of the bed. That thing was as long as she is tall, and with a thickness to match.

“Lupa…” You coo, “Luuuupaaaaa…~”

“Yeah, yeah,” She dismisses you, jamming that paw against your face, probably just to shush you up, “Laugh it up, dork.”

She doesn’t fight you as you push it away, shooting her a look – one she responds to by sticking out her tongue. You try your best to look angry, but… Gosh, this is just silly, isn’t it? You break into a snicker, then a chuckle, one that she shares with you. You grab a handful of her chest fluff, pulling yourself close to her. You’re not sure how long you spend just, laying there, snuggling up to your best friend, but…

It feels nice to relax.

You aren’t worried about your deadlines, your responsibilities anymore. What matters is getting to relax, snuggle up, and maybe even doze off. Your hand wanders down to your wolfy friend’s tummy. It was very soft, much like her chest, and you enjoy the feeling of its gentle rise and fall. It was more than a bit pudgy too, thanks to her healthy (and costly, you might add) diet of couch cushions, blankets, and pillows. A part of you wondered if you could use it as a pillow.

“You know…~” She eventually lilts, “I think I deserve something after you were so rude to me earlier…~”

“Hmm? What do you mean?” You ask, more than a little bleary-eyed after laying against her for so long.

“Oh, you know…”

You feel those big, strong paws push you aside, and… pwomff, she lays on top of you, her head resting atop your chest. It felt like you were laying beneath a particularly thick blanket in terms of weight. Looking up, that tail swishes in the air above you, betraying her mischief.

“…Lupa?”

Now that she has you right where she wants you, she hesitates. Averting her gaze with an uncharacteristic shyness, putting a paw to her mouth as she thinks.

“I’d… understand. If you don’t want to, since I made it kinda… awkward before, but.” You see her drum her thick, mascot suit-like fingers against the sheets, “Is it okay if we kissed?”

You blink, face reddening a bit… You weren’t exactly against what had happened earlier. It was just a bit of a surprise. Even still, you weren’t completely sure. Then again…

You two had been through a lot together. You’d be lying if you said you didn’t have some kind of feelings for her. She was in rough shape when you two first met – a neglected toy with tears and even a missing eye. You couldn’t just leave her like that! You did what anyone would do. You patched her up, washed her, and gave her the love she deserved. And that was before you found out she could transform into a hulking beast of a wolf – one that smothered you with her paws, had a voice with a bit of an indignant edge to it, and had trouble expressing what she really wanted.

A wolf who was so full of compassion and care, even if it was sometimes hard to get her to admit it. If it wasn’t for her, you’d probably be having a panic attack right now. You… You…

“Y’know what?” You begin to sit up, shuffling so that your back rests against the headboard, “Sure.”

“Really?” Her voice jumps an octave before smoothing back out, “Oh! Um! Okay. Cool.” She crawls closer to you, keeping her gaze transfixed on you as she looms, looms, looms. Her broad shoulders seem to shake a little as her muzzle draws closer to you. Everything about her was big. Bigger than you for sure. Seconds felt like minutes as she draws the moment out, until…

“Mmp.”

Her lips press against yours. Her eye is clenched shut as she tenses up. Then, she opens it and leans away.

“Um—”

You open your mouth to say something – but thanks to what happens next, you’ve already forgotten what it was. Lupa doesn’t wait for you to finish, instead jamming her lips against you! She tilts her head, warm breath hitting your face as she tries to lock lips with you. You don’t stop her – you don’t want to stop her, raising your arms to grab behind her neck and pull her closer. She doesn’t stop there, though. Instead, she grabs you, resting a paw on your shoulder and pulling you into a one-armed hug. Her lips squish against your cheek once, then twice, thrice, four times. She’s nuzzling into you so hard you’re worried she’ll somehow go right through you. Her tail is wagging fiercely now, and she can’t suppress her girlish giggling and wolfish growls as she opts to peck your lips another time, yet another tender mwah filling the room.

“Gosh, Lupa!” You tilt your head as she continues her assault. If those dark lips were covered in real gloss, you were sure you’d be covered in stains right now. “What’s gotten into you?”

“Oh, I’m so sorry.~” You’re sure she isn’t. “Once I get a taste, I just have to come back for more~” She sticks her tongue out, and… drags it across your cheek. With its subtle sheen and smoothness, it feels like satin against your skin.

“You’re so tasty too,” she teases, laying against you, nestling her head on your shoulder once more, “I could just eat you up.” You roll your eyes.

“You wouldn’t.”

“Wouldn’t I? Maybe I should now, just to prove you wrong!” she rebuts, and you stifle an embarrassingly shrill squeak as her plastic teeth gently nibble down on your ear.

“Ah, ah, okay, okay! You made your point!” You surrender immediately, earning you a low snicker. You were sure she could actually eat you if she really wanted to…

But… She yawns instead.

“Someone getting sleepy?” You ask. She scoffs, rolling her eyes.

“Ha! No. I don’t get tired like you do, you dweeb,” she gives you a smug look, tilting her head. “Look at you, you’re thiiis close to just falling asleep, aren’t you?” You fight back a yawn as you two stare at each other. Thankfully, she yawns first.

“But… That… did tucker me out,” she quietly admits. “A little.” Her head rests atop your own with a soft fwump, and she nuzzles right into your hair. You look up at her with a newfound smugness of your own, sticking your tongue out at her, to which she makes the cutest groan in response.

“Goooodnight, Lupa…” you say.

“Yeah? Goodnight,” she replies. Her lips squoosh to your cheek for one last kiss. “Dork.” You can’t help but giggle. This… was nice. Your best friend is snuggled up to you, absolutely spooning you, paws resting securely on your chest. You’d want a blanket, but Lupa already has that covered. She has her tail draped across your body, and her warmth washes over you. With one last yawn, you finally let yourself drift off to sleep.

It was the best night’s sleep you’d ever had.

Most of the time, when I wanna draw but cant quite know WHAT i wanna draw, I redraw stuff. Like, screenshots. Or old drawings. Or even memes. Those are especially fun for drawing expressions I might not usually draw. Or I take scenes from fics I like or fics I've written and draw them. It helps that I get to move my pen with only half the brain power needed to picture what I want drawn.

But sometimes when I really cant overcome it, I usually just wait it out. Do my other hobbies like read or write or churn up another meta analysis. You cant force yourself to overcome that block sometimes and that's ok.

Oh but sometimes tho! Something that works unintentionally is when I'm like really really upset. I dont like to show it much, bcuz I understand that I'm getting old and I have a significant amount of followers that I dont wanna be a bad example to... But I can have quite a temper on me and can get really petty. But instead of exploding, I try to draw with those feelings.

Like, a while ago, I got really upset about stuff with an AI art fraud. And im just like, you know what this person can claim they're an "artist" all they want, but they still havent even shown a paper drawing as concrete proof. all just excuses and shit. The next moment I drew this, just to reassure myself that I'm an artist and I know what being a real artist is. That unlike AI frauds, I can show I dont need a computer to draw. All I need is a pencil and paper and I'm good.

(Then I proceeded to draw more than I usually do on paper because of that lmao)

And then when Youtooz came with an announcement that they're gonna release four figurines, half of which was 2 versions of Alastor and NO sign of Vaggie, I drew four Vaggies. Yes. I drew all this angry. Until yunno. I got so happy over how nice this ended up looking instead.

And then the last art I posted with the Harem Hotel AU? That's been in my drafts since november but I only got to finish it recently because I got upset over all the people in my notifs leaving hate comments about Vaggie lmao. Just told myself that they can claim to be objective critics who arent misogynistic, but at the end of the day all they could do is leave mean comments on twitter. Meanwhile, I can create! It's borderline horny gay shit, but hey! At least I'm doin' something productive! I can show female characters like her are are worth so much love to the point of making art!

Just. Idk. Maybe next time you feel negative feelings and shit, use art as the outlet for that negativity. Make something out of it. It doesnt have to be pretty, but hopefully it could make you feel good.

Or you know. Like I said, just wait it out.

More of a warning against self-sabotage, because I see it so much. Sometimes it's tied to perfectionism, sometimes it's the opposite - people surrendering to imperfection when they don't really have to.

I've been in the webcomic sphere for several years now and I've seen so many people introduce their comic with 'I know it's very long and not easy to read, and I won't be going back and changing anything about what I've already made - but please critique it so I can make the rest of the pages better and attract a bigger audience from now on.'

And that's a hard thing to respond to. If a reader can't get through all those existing pages without being confused or bored, then how can they get to the good stuff that lies past them?

So much of gaining an audience is about actively making it easy to 'fall into' a work. Without that easy entry point, it's always going to be an uphill battle to build an audience, no matter how good the later chapters get. There are outliers, but most webcomics won't be those outliers, especially with thousands of them available nowadays. Some people love the grind, but most people will jump to a new tab and try to find something less frustrating.

And webcomic creation is particularly cursed by its very nature. Creators are hesitant to go back and edit pages, even once they've figured out more details about their craft or story structure. It's mostly because of the seeming permanence of it all - the art takes ages and the words feel unchangeable if even one other person has read them. To go back and edit is to publicly admit your failings, right? That's how it feels. What do you MEAN you didn't get it right the first time? You were supposed to do it live, and do it PERFECTLY!

But ideally it shouldn't be any different than prose writing, which is ALL ABOUT finding the story in those edits. And because your story is digital, you can go back and change things whenever you feel like it. A webcomic is fluid.

And if you're thinking 'I should just redraw my whole first chapter' - NO! Hell no, old art can be a part of the appeal! It's far more about finding little tricks to convey your story/characters more clearly. I have read some first chapters with janky art that made me fall completely in love with the story and cast. It's not about the art - as with all things comic-related, it's about conveyance.

Examples I've seen and some I've used myself: A single extra page with a meaningful interaction can solidify the theme of a character's arc. One additional 5-to-10-page scene can help add visual context for an offscreen event where there was none before. Adding a map can tell people where the characters currently are. Changing a character design can help if they get often confused with another character. Redoing your lettering to make it more legible is a huge one too.

In the end, I just don't want people to be afraid of small edits. When I got feedback about the bad clarity of my own work, I knew it would take some time to fix those problems. It wasn't fun to think about or to do, but I'm glad I did it in the end - because it would have limited my audience tremendously. With just a bit of extra effort, I opened a door that wasn't there before, and it now leads more people even more easily to 'the good stuff.'

tl;dr You started your webcomic for a reason, and you're learning more things about its characters, story, and craft every day. Don't be afraid to go back to old pages and inject some of that wisdom through editing. Even a little can go a long way.

***Caveat: If your goal is to just create chaotically, with no goal of gaining an audience, you are a wild and free little thing, and I am in awe of you. This whole rant doesn't apply to you, and you are stronger than me.

so first off i did some traces just to show whats there vs redraws to show my interpretation

ive said this on other asks but again jsyk, tracing isnt bad!! its a tool. theres some stuff with intellectual property and whatnot but using tracing to study shapes and forms is a really valuable practice.

also just taking some time to learn facial structures and anatomy is super useful, reading what bones and muscles are where and how they interact with one another. taking this info and staring in the mirror and moving your face around and thinking about it. just really furthers understanding of how the face works. trying to sound normal about this but i love anatomy and motion and physics and whatever

anyways im going to go through all the numbered points so there's no confusion. 1. forehead lines - self explanatory. more prominent when brows are raised 2. crows feet - at the outer corners of the eyes, more prominent when smiling or squinting 3. nasolabial folds - the folds that go from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth. more prominent when the mouth is wide, like smiling 4. brow furrow - self explanatory, most prominent when brows are furrowed. mccoy tends to have two right next to his eyebrows, kirk has one in the middle. everyones face works different lmao 5. chin crease - caused by how the chin and lower lip interact. 6. nasojugal groove - start from the inner corners of the eye and can extent over the cheeks. everyone has these and idk why people dont like them i think theyre really cool!!!! but Society. i guess. :/ 7. eye bags - caused by the skin sagging beneath the eyes. mccoy isnt even that old in tos i think hes meant to be mid 40s by the end of the 5 year mission, hes just got really prominent eye bags lmao 8. idk what the name is for these, but when the mouth is wide and pushes the skin to the sides, these folds sometimes form outside of the nasolabial folds 9. philtrum - the groove above the upper lip. i dont usually draw this but mccoy's struck me as prominent enough that i usually draw it on him 10. masseter - the muscle that moves the jaw up and down. its a pretty rugged muscle and while i wouldnt say mccoy's is especially prominent, it kind of extends that nasojugal groove from certain angles/positions 11. orbicularis oris - mouth muscle, usually easier to see when lips are pursed or frowns are pulled. mccoy's is pretty prominent from 3/4ths or side, his mouth tends to protrude in profile 12. this isnt a muscle but more of a line defining the planes of the face, but since i drew it i felt i should explain lmao

a few points:

im an animator i tend to exaggerate and emphasize certain things so i usually make him more square.

i like to combine eyebags and crows feet for brevity/flow, same with nasojugal grooves, eyebags, and masseter lines. my approach is always subject to change based on pose, expression, reference image, etc.

i take out details that i deem redundant or cluttering and keep what details i need to make things feel Right

all this info is applicable to any character of any age, its just in how you apply it and facial proportions that willl change how old a character is perceived to be

there's a lot more with drawing a Character rather than an Actor, just because the features are there doesnt necessarily mean things will feel correct? its very much in the mannerisms and poses and expressions

i only went over my approach to his likeness but not really body type or posing or anything idk if u want that i could always try to answer that later haha

Lately I've been slowly making my way through The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles! I play it in bed each night to settle in before I go to sleep. It's like a good book. The fickleness of the jurors always makes me laugh.

Another recent one I liked: Thank Goodness You're Here! It's basically a little interactive animated movie. Matt Berry is in it. I once saw it described as "Untitled Twat Game"

Deadly Premonition is the worst game I've ever played by conventional standards, but I'd still recommend it because it's bad in really fun ways. Bring some friends and a case of beer.

I like games that provoke a strong reaction. I'd rather play something like DP than a "good" big-budget game that's smooth and pleasing but not all that memorable.

Also on the topic of weird games: This is the secret best channel on YouTube. The more you watch, the better it gets. I mean idk, maybe other people don't see it and I'm just deranged. Still though. I've cried laughing at some of these.

I don't often try to go for a specific texture, but when I do it can be tricky. In real life I love soft jersey knit fabric. Despite my best efforts, I haven't been able to nail it in 2D in a way that really scratches that kinky itch.

In general, my drawings rarely come out the way I pictured them in my head. (I think that's how it is for most artists?) If it's looking really off then I might redraw a character or body part from scratch, but for the most part I just go with the flow.

For hottest: I gravitate toward a certain weirder type of piece where I draw myself (or "myself") with super-exaggerated proportions and/or humiliating captions:

It feels exciting to just go totally off the wall. I get turned on not just by drawing these, but also posting them. I guess it's kind of a public humiliation/exhibitionism thing. (Actually, that's exactly what it is.)

I used to put them up on Twitter, but it got a little too weird and embarrassing. Now I keep them behind the safety of the paywall.

Soooo I made thing. I will probably redraw this in the cannon style in the future. As for my own personal style for drawing GF stuff, I'm still fleshing it out. But I have another AU now. My Hand of God AU has Ford committing to Bill and spending years trapped in a very abusive relationship, also the apocalypse so that's fun. This one's the complete opposite direction. Ford and Fidds accidentally come into possession of a pair of twins, these boys end up being the motivation it took for Ford to cut things off with Bill and do whatever it takes to keep him from ever getting out.

(I've yet to flesh out exactly how these two were born but the boys were created through anomalous means.)

On the left is Nik (Nikola) An adrenalin junkie who loves adventure and is an absolute menace to society as is the Pines tradition. On the right is Newt (Newton), a pastel-loving soft boy who will cry if you tell him pink is a girl color and gets overly attached to every weird critter Ford brings home.

Nick is missing a pinkie because Bill cut it off while possessing Ford when he was a baby as a threat. Trying to scare Ford into compliance by threatening to kill the boys. Ford did some very unsafe brain surgery on himself to make it impossible for him to ever sleep again. Cutting off Bill's ability to control him for the most part.

Portal is gone, still living in Gravity Falls though, and keeping an eye out for anyone Bill might try to manipulate. Fidds and his wife are divorced. Emma has primary custody but Tate stays with them in GF during the summers where he often bullies Nik and Newt. But Nik and Newt don't tell their dads about it because they know how much Fidds loves his other son and they don't want to make things complicated for him. Tate is just taking out his frustration over his parents failed marriage on his half-siblings. Fidds takes the twins with him when he visits Tate and the rest of his family in California for Christmas. Ford stays behind because Emma hates him and he doesn't want to deal with her family.

Ford and Fidds aren't married both cause it's not legal yet but also tbh not sure they ever would regardless just cause Ford is pretty disinterested in those sorts of formalities. Whatever it is they have going for them right now works for him.

TBH I made myself sad thinking about autistic people and our relationships. The way we love isn't always obvious to NT people and it can sometimes feel like you're not good enough for anyone because loving people in the way you're expected to is such a struggle.

Sometimes I see people frame Ford^2 as this completely unrequited thing and it reminds me of the experience of loving people very intensely but feeling unable to prove it because it's so difficult to live up to the standards most people have in relationships.

I like Fiddlestan as a ship it's cute and a fun idea and I get the appeal but there's a little nagging thought in the back of my head that it kind of implies Ford's neurotypical brother is better. More capable of real love. That Ford was never good enough. Not to say Fiddleford didn't deserve better but the idea that these two couldn't have worked makes me kind of depressed for kind of personal reasons so I wanted to make up a universe where they do.

Not to say there isn't plenty of material of Ford and Fidds reconnecting as old men and making it work but the fact they lost so much of their lives to bad decisions is still sad.

extremely detailed designs (such as final fantasy 14 characters) are a 50% markup! aka, cut the price in half, and then add that amount back onto the original. i cannot afford to be drawing one million belts and swords on a single person for the same price as id charge for bart simpson

if you want me to draw naked people or horny stuff thats another 20 bucks on top of whatever the price is. which, yes, for a full body piece Does make it a bargain for you to just ask me to draw your mmorpg character naked instead.

i dont want to just open up ship commissions point blank because drawing people interacting is so much harder. but if the ship is something i am into as well i MAY be open to it. itd be double as expensive though
